Charmed by the younger couple's free-spirited approach to life, the 40-somethings develop a fast friendship and forsake the trappings of their mature mindset. Just when this film's age premise starts to wear thin, the relationships develop deeper implications. Stiller ably handles the humor in his character's dilemmas, but it's Driver quirky personality that charms the screen. Writer/director Noah Baumbach has created a sharply-observed satire on the generation gap that provides more chuckles than laffs. Still, this perceptive parody is fun. NOTE: Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary plays the subject of the film's documentary. Expand

While another take on hipsters from Baumbach himself, While We're Young plays with familiar themes that are sparked by a high energy couple (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfriend) and a peculiar look at documentary cinema.

This effort clearly needs reworking to give it some much-needed focus more like that found in director Noah Baumbach's other more effective offerings. It's unfortunate, too, given the pool of talent recruited for this production; they're never really given the opportunity to shine as they otherwise might have. Expand

Mother always said that if you couldn’t say something nice about someone or something don’t say anything, but I didn’t always take mother’s advice.

“While We’re Young” took 93 minutes of my life that I will never get back! It immediately goes to the top of my list of worst films of 2015, possibly of the last decade!

In case you didn’t know it all guys in their twenties are scam artists, dishonest and unethical while all men in their forties are new fathers and/or are losers while all old men are intellectuals, celebrated, authoritative, honest and believes in the truth.

The movie is categorized as a comedy and, yet, there is not one laugh in the movie. Do you find 15 minutes of people vomiting funny? How about people on a bad ‘trip’?

I will spare the actors except I will say that after seeing her in 5-6 movies I will avoid seeing Amanda Seyfried in future ones and after the last 3 movies I saw Adam Driver he, too, will be avoided.

Charles Grodin tells Ben Stiller at one point that the latter’s film is, “a six and a half hour film that is seven hours too long” and that applies to “While We’re Young” which is 93 minutes and seems 7 hours too long!

Ridiculously pretentious and unfunny film with no likable characters It starts out trying (and failing) be a goofy comedy and halfway through decides it is going to be a serious probe into, yes, the ethics of documentary filmmaking.

I was hoping that this one would finally be actually funny and mildly satirical of aging would-be hipsters in Brooklyn as well as younger would-be hipsters there. But I found the film boring, tedious, unwitty, and too earnest in the end. I'm going to have to give up on Baumbach. The contrast with the brilliance of Woody Allen at his best could not be stronger. Baumbach takes himself far too seriously as an artiste, and his "art" suffers. And Baumbach's simply not as sharp as Allen, much less as funny. Expand

Cutesy montages show they are losing touch with their contemporaries and out of touch with today’s youth. Yet, prove bodies age - irregardless of spirit. Stiller - fifty playing forty - confuses the issue. Watts - light on the screen dims - too many roles too close together. Driver is cool and calculating. Then a shift - Baumbach tackles the manipulation of truth in documentaries to heighten drama in a world full of selfies and Desperate Housewives. He even casts a reality T.V. star as a hedge fund manager. Wink. Wink. And we end with the notion - parenthood propels humans into adulthood. Now that’s a premise worthy of debate. But he doesn’t. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To see the critics rating of this movie tells me that Ben Stiller is flavor of the month and they will do anything to kiss his rear end. The last good movie he was in was "Dodgeball." This piece of cinematic drivel is any bad Stiller movie to add to the list. Watts sleepwalks through her role and the two younger main actors can't. When throwing up is one of your main plot points, its time to rethink your script. Expand

Ben Stiller (Josh) and Naomi Watts (Cornelia) play a 40 ish childless couple who become enamored with the energy and eclectic lifestye of the much younger couple Jaime (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). The "friendship" initially seems like great fun...riding bikes, learning hip-hop dancing and providing one of the fewl funny scenes; attending a street beach party. Soon it is revealed the motivation of Jaime to meet this couple was to use them for promoting his career. The truth propels the foursome to facing some issues that result in individual growth. Josh and Cornelia achieve greater intamacy and a reinvigoration of their creativity. If only the movie had stopped there instead of opting for the hollywood ending, it could have been an intelligent look at a lifestyle choice that didn't involve children. Expand

Those of us living with ADHD or something very close to it can readily testify to this fact. Furthermore, today’s ADHD culture exasperates the problem for just about everyone….hardly anyone is immune…....enter Noah Baumbach and his latest film “While We’re Young” - a gloriously high-energy film that can’t decide what its about and very nearly lands in the ditch as a result !…..
To be more precise Noah-Baumbach-the-Director becomes perilously entangled with wrong-headed choices that Noah-Baumbach-The-Overly-Ambitious-Scriptwriter comes up with …and it is this that very nearly land “While We’re Young” in the ditch. The good news, however, is that the film survives the perverse, near fatal “foot-shooting” antics of its script and ultimately succeeds in winning our affection and even our gratitude.
However, it was definitely a close call and the audience at the screening I attended seemed at times to be almost holding it’s breath wondering if Baumbach would pull it off.
He did and here’s how.…..For one thing there is Baumbach-the-Director’s truly joyous, at times almost ecstatic embracing of the possibilities that the cinema offers. The very strong first half of “While We’re Young” is nothing short of jubilant in its high-spiritedness and enthusiastic accounts of what movies, and indeed Life itself, has to offer. The wacky, wonderful, almost Franciscan young couple that Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts hook up with as the film begins offers Baumbach ideal material to showcase his great love of cinema and the first hour of the film goes swimmingly…….so swimmingly in fact, that it is this brilliant first half of the film that ultimately saves it from the far less successful second half. At about the mid-point of the story- quite weirdly- an entirely different movie arrives on the scene and Baumbach’s overly-ambitious, ADD scriptwriter takes control of the film !
What promised to be a “Harold and Maude-ish” escapade or a new edition of Milos Forman’s delightful “Taking Off” turns into a murky and unsatisfying. wannabe film noir; a puzzling and heady concoction of “Match Point”, “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and Roman Polanski‘s “The Tenant” (with just a daub of “Double Indemnity” and “Blow Up” thrown in for good measure !)..…..anyway none of this “washes” and this second half of the film is badly in need of a far more nuanced re-write. Even worse this new plot development threatens to “sour” all that went before and the entire film threatens to IMPLODE in a key scene in which Adam Driver (who plays the husband in the free-wheeling young couple) suggests that he is not above blackmailing Naomi Watts about the brief sexual indiscretion they had together while they were both “high” on drugs.……This, along with a few other seriously “off” narrative moments, would have sunk a less interesting film by a less interesting director but “While We’re Young” recovers even from these missteps and - almost miraculously -regains its balance.
In effect Baumbach-The-Gifted-Director managing to recoup the losses incurred by Baumbach-The-Scriptwriter and the latter’s overly ambitious indeed, ultimately untenable Scriptwriters-Don‘t-Try-This-At-Home script. That the film manages to survive its “near-death” experience is also due to the wonderful cast Baumbach has assembled. Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts are perfect as the middle-aged couple whose life has mysteriously “stalled”. Each of them nails the “quiet desperation” that has engulfed them as they attempt to recall when was the last time they went on a trip to Europe. Adam Driver is equally powerful and convincing as their suitably quixotic and unfathomable Sammy Glickish new friend……
(footnote- it should be noted that Baumbach CAN write great scripts- as his exquisite “Greenberg” (his masterpiece to date) proves only too well; and likewise his “Francis Ha”- a sort of updated “Perils of Pauline” set in the New York art scene and featuring an unsinkable performance by Greta Gerwig)
…All-in-all Baumbach needs to learn to stop fretting about his material and realize that in film especially More-is-Less….. and needs to trust in his innate smarts and avoid the “fussing” that very nearly destroys the delightful “souffle” that is “While We’re Young”…… Happily the “souffle” HAS survived. This is due in no small part, to the cinematic smarts that are in evidence -for example- in the scenes in which Naomi Watts’ connects with the benefits of hip hop aerobics and appears to awaken from some bewitching, decades-long coma! In the dream-like, at time indecipherable language of the cinema, these moments guide “While We’re Young” away from its stormy and potentially ruinous narrative seas and into safe harbor.

A more serious subtext – about the role of filmmaker point of view and the shaping of “truth” and message in documentaries – is not as successful. Or so it seemed to me, and I see my share of docus. Stirring these ingredients into what is basically a domestic comedy-drama about marriage and mid-life crisis benefits the subtext: a lengthy showdown between Josh and Jamie is at least surrounded by a modestly entertaining movie and thus seems only about half as wearisome as it might have otherwise. As for the marriage/mid-life stuff—a week or so later I only remember the final shots, which I did not find pleasing. Expand

I'm a white guy and even I saw this as so white bread! How this film was greenlit for the big screen is beyond me, it's the perfect fodder for Lifetime or WE. The pace, dialogue, scenery is all so banal and boring. Even the lead character Josh says this self-aware line when conversing with hedge fund Dave (played by Ryan Serhant from "MDLNY", the primary reason I even attempted this) "As with many boring things, the longer you watch it, it takes on a different dimension." Except the longer you watch this the only different dimension you'll encounter is your own dream life (because, um, you'll fall asleep.)

"The Family Guy" did a similar treatment of older couple trying to keep up with a younger couple to far greater effect and interest at a fraction of the cost. I guess films of this low caliber are made simply as a paycheck mechanism for career actors. Every film, every tv show, every song can't be a hit but they keep the ball moving forward, everyone employed.

The early lead-up scenes as Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts get to know this compelling younger couple are the most entertaining--they manage to make fun of the younger generation in a really clever way, that pokes fun and exaggerates without becoming a complete parody. I especially enjoyed the conversations between Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried, as they discussed their perspectives on motherhood and how their friends change when they have children.

Towards the end, however, the movie became much more about the working relationship between the two men, Ben Stiller and Adam Driver, who are both filmmakers--the older man has been on a downward career trajectory because of an unfinished documentary, while Adam Driver's character is a young up-and-comer. While I understand that the plot turn to focus on their film makes for a dramatic conclusion to the movie, I found it much less interesting and I was fairly disappointed that the movie turned to focus on the male characters, leaving the women on the sidelines. Their characters were interesting and well-developed early on, and I thought it was a waste that they weren't filled out any more in the last half of the movie. I was much more interested in their characters, and in the marital dynamics of the individual couples, than I was interested in the clash of egos that the ending focused on. Also, while I don't want to spoil the ending, I thought that the final few minutes of the film did not at all make sense with the rest of it, which also detracted from my enjoyment of the movie. Despite the problems I have with the ending, I still enjoyed the movie, and it's a reasonably fun and clever comedy.

The movie isn't groundbreaking, it's the type that you watch when there is nothing else to watch or if you're 45yo and identify with it's characters. I think it somehow personifies the bridge between 2 generations, and it is suitable for both. Most 20-somethings might find it boring, but if you keep watching it, it will make sense and it will also show you how your parents feel, the baby culture, the new-comers etc. It's a good movie, but not for everyone. This movie has a very modern and fresh plot that will not bore anyone. The way Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts & Adam Driver carried this film, results as a funny and great little movie to watch. Overall, a great film to watch with your partner & friends.

While We're Young

As Ben and Naomi struggles keeping up with the people of their age, there is an unsatisfied tone from the first sequence of the movie which stays with the audience the whole way and surprisingly this helps connecting it. While We're Young is one of the finest fresh baked idea coming from Noah and he uses it well depicting generations through a common media and its amusing perspectives that offers us these little chuckles in this smart drama. The resemblance towards Ben's character speaks itself of his work along with such a great cast; Naomi and Adam are brilliant too. A light drama which does not work on a larger margin to make your heart pump faster but it sure is intriguing enough to keep you invested in it for 97 minutes.

It's...okay? I expected more from this one considering the talent involved. All I ended up getting, though, was a passable film that barely held my attention for the entire runtime.

While not Noah Baumbach's finest work, it has his tell tale fingerprints all over it and that can only be a positive thing.
The performances of all the actors involved makes this movie worth seeing for that reason alone.

A good cerebral comedy. If with "Mr Jealousy" Baumbach gave me more Woody Allen vibes, here his style is more evident. More raw and less Hollywoodian. I liked Mr Jealousy as well as I liked this.

This is the perfect example of why dramatic comedy is one of my favorites genres. Noah Baumbach does an excellent job showing us the good and the bad side of this kind of friendship.
The performances are great and the script quiet interesting

The performances are great and the script quiet interesting and contemporary, I don't understand why this film was indifferent to the audience, for me was great.
