I read up on the the story and was quite hyped for the movie. Well, my expectations were blown away. This movie is epic and is one of my favorite superhero movies ever. The story apparently translates really well to a movie and I feel that I could understand all the plot elements that many like me that hadn't read the novel could not understand. If you have not read the book, I suggest that you at least read up a little about the characters to understand the deep stories behind them. The characters are what tmakes the movie shine. Most of the characters are well acted, most of all by Jackie Earle Haley as Rorshach. He was incredible and played one of the most impressive roles I've seen in years. The violence is quite over-the-top and is pretty awesome if you like that kind of stuff. This movie is definitely not for children; along with the obscene amounts of violence there is also a lot of nudity and some language as well. The script is well written and Zack Snyder does a great job of directing everything. Everything fits in well. The movie is pretty long at 2 hours and 43 minutes, but it is well worth the ticket price and I highly suggest. If you consider yourself a nerd or a fan of superhero movies at all, this is a must-see. Expand

At around 3 in the morning, I walked out of the theater and thought, "It was.. OK." This is to all the people who say that "if you read the comic, you'll love the movie." I say that it's almost the complete opposite. Fans of Alan Moore's masterpiece will be disappointed by the changes and by some of the casting. Speaking for myself, I really came into the theater with high hopes. I had read the comic only twice (a small number compared to the many other Watchmen fanatics), and had been psyched ever since the trailer first came out. Needless to say, I left the movie criticizing the film, even though I would never call it "bad." It just seems like the people who haven't read the comic are going to see it to gain respect points from people, or are going expecting another movie like Batman. This is not Batman; this is Watchmen, where superheroes don't exist. Real people exist, a concept that was left out of the movie adaption. Everyone's running around and doing all these superhuman things, the point gets lost that these are just ordinary people that don masks to fight crime for their own reasons. Another thing to the people that praise the soundtrack: What movie were you watching?? The soundtrack, by itself, is probably fine for any hipster's iPod. But the music in the film just felt disjointed and unnecessary (excluding Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin' "). I mean, "99 Luftballons"? That was laughable. And playing "Hallelujah" during one of the most awkward parts of the movie pulled a giggle out of the whole audience. I know that these were the songs quoted in the novel.. but numerous times, people have brought up what works in a comic doesn't always work in a movie. The soundtrack was one of those things. Please stop calling Snyder "visionary." He's made three movies, calm down. Looks like he traded story for heavy-handed punches and ludicrous fighting scenes, via slow-mo. This could've been a really good movie; the only thing that I count as a plus is that, hopefully, the film will get people to read the original comic. I won't say it's a bad movie, but it sure wasn't good. Expand

For the record, I did not read the graphic novel, and I think I understood enough from the film in one viewing not to need to read it. Had I read it, I would've been too busy nitpicking about what was changed or missing to actually enjoy the film (I also saw the first Harry Potter film before reading the books, and enjoyed the film a lot more as a result.) So in this case, ignorance is bliss. This was a long movie, but I didn't leave my seat, because every moment was exciting. I also found it was more entertaining and less plodding than "The Dark Knight," a film many are comparing it too. In some regards, "Knight" even feels blander in my memory, although I loved it. But perhaps that's why Dark Knight was so much less polarizing. It wasn't as risky. Expand

Even if I were blind to everything that is offensive about it, its pure aesthetic and entertainment merits alone are enough to make me want to nauseated. That it is earning millions of dollars in the box office and earning high ratings on every movie site suggests to me numerous choice reflections on American society. A brief, albeit comprehensive overview: So...the world is about to go into the last stages of annihilation and the only one that can save it is a blue full-frontal stand-in for god. The most eloquent ambassador that is sent on behalf of humankind is a leather booted large-breasted bimbo who stomps when she doesn't get her way? This is because our day-glo god left his loyal physicist wife for the tramp and apparently she is the most precious thing mankind has left to offer, even though she sluts it around with everyone else. Unfortunately for mankind, she seems more traumatized by the discovery of her illegitimate birth than the hundreds of millions of people that are about to die. But luckily for her, the people do get bombed to a grotesque withering mass death but we discover that her mother loves her so it's OK. It's offensive on every level imaginable. Pregnant women get shot. Women get raped, but return for more. Little girls are mutilated and fed to dogs, but this violence is justified by more violence (sound familiar?). Namely, in this case, the masked avenger hacking the kidnapper with an ax until there is nothing left but some bloody pulpy mass. But worse it doesn't just try to be gratuitous violence married with the most vulgar and cliché adolescent pornography--I'd let 300 slide--the sickening part is that it comports itself as a profound redemptive reflection on mankind. As if all that was done was justified by some shoddy mythological and not even arcane historical references and piss poor attempt at a discussion on Deism. The most ironic part of the film is its attempt to critique the violence and repulsive aspects of human nature but then perpetuates it by tainting the minds of anyone who watched with its filth. In my comfortable liberal existence, I never once considered censorship as an issue to be discussed, but I would happily censor this one. and, Anyone who enjoyed the movie should reconsider their consumptive and putrid existence. The Watchmen tells the story of a group of not so heroic heroes, and as the film states one of them is killed and now the rest have to find out why. This was such a visually complex film, but for me personally, nothing more than that. It was also unnecessarily violent. The tongue-in-cheek nature and what felt like 3+ hours of discourse on human society wore thin very quickly. Good adaptations usually are updated to match the times, this one was simply silly. As some have already stated, if you've read the graphic novel and really enjoyed it, then you will probably love this movie. It is almost a perfect adaptation of the graphic novel, which I found to be pretty good, though I purposefully did not read to the end so the movie would surprise me. To be frank, the first 3/4 of the movie are quite awesome, and the last 1/4 of the movie is a complete disappointment. Not to mention, Dr. Manhattan (the blue guy) is completely naked the whole movie and is exposed, which blinded me through parts of the movie (if he was having sex, it woulda been intriguing, but no, he was just hanging out. That's really enjoyable). There were many slow scenes unless Rorschach was involved, and my girlfriend even fell asleep twice during the movie. I did enjoy the story (not including the ending), the opening is amazing, Rorschach is a beast, and then... Matthew Goode's acting was terrible. Just plain awful. There are many more things to be said, but the movie was, on the whole, a let down (and i saw it at IMAX), Enjoyable, somewhat worth seeing, but if you're expecting THE next movie, wait for G.I. And it has tons of convolutions and characters. To parse it down to its length now is amazing. People who complain about length are the same who have no appreciation for the original text. To me, the critics who are complaining about this movie should also complain about "Macbeth" because they "talk funny" in it. This movie was great, and I applaud Synder's application of it onto film. Many classic movies are not received well on release, but rise in critics' appreciation with the test of time - Watchman may be one of these films. I took a group of teenagers to the screening and figured I'd be bored to sleep. Instead I found a morally, intellectually, and (surprisingly) emotionally challenging SciFi flick, with great plot, action, humor, character development and cinematography. Even the sex and ultraviolence were (mostly) not overdone and appropriate within the context of the story and graphic novel form. It was with relief when I saw highly respected critics such as Roger Ebert also got it - and my kids rated it a 10! Caution: not recommended for teens unable to handle R rated material. Expand

Forget the fact that the make up was poor and the action was sadistic and cruel. Clockwork Orange was cruel but made an important statement about society. People will forgive flaws in a movie if the story touches them. Alan Moore wrote the graphic novel as a satire of fascism, but conversely this movie is a testament to it. Perhaps this is why Moore sued to not have the movie made. The basic point of this movie is that the ends justify the means, and genocide is OK because people of superior intellect know better than we do, and should make decisions such as genocide to protect us from ourselves. What garbage!!! People who love power for the sake of power will love this film. People who fantasize about rape and torture will love this film. Adolf Hitler would have been the biggest fan. The movie proves all of his points about people and society and what should be done. As a film maker, I rarely wish to see a movie fail. I feel that with the time the studio gave the director he did a great job. Ideally it could have been a mini-series with the same or a bigger budget, but what company, especially in this economy, would risk that on a mini-series. I agree that some of the music choices were questionable. I also think that Ozymandias should have been portrayed as less of a mean character, at the end of the book he still questions if he did the right thing, giving him a more human and less robotic quality. people just dont want to like this movie, ask one person and theyll say its not enough like the graphic novel, ask someone else and theyll say it was too much of a direct interpretation. some people say its too long, others say it wasnt long enough. People are just really bitchy and half no attention span, thats why a lot of people didnt like this movie, i mean the acting was freakin great, people bitched that some of the characters were emotionless, BECAUSE THATS HOW THEY WERE IN THE NOVEL YOU IDIOTS. Snyder just tried too hard to please everyone, but honestly, this has to be the best interpretation of a graphic novel or comic book ever made, and before any of you even think the words The Dark Knight, yeah it was great but it really had almost nothing to do with the comics except for the character names. So if you are thinking of going to see watchmen, just be prepared for a long movie and if theres not a fight scene every 5 minutes, dont bitch about it just because you have A-D-fuckin-D

Even the ending change (I read the Wikipedia entry for it) is acceptable. Butler does an amazing job of adapting comics because he is faithful to the original works, adding his artistry in the amazing camera work, editing and sleekness of his movies. Personally, I would like him to be the designated comic book adapter in Hollywood, because he's so good at it. Fat chance, but a girl can dream. I did think the sex scene was a bit much, because I think the same ideas could have been portrayed without showing it so graphically. Yes it is a natural human behavior, but it's a private one! I like it that way. You can suggest it by showing faces, and limbs just as well. IMHO. Dr. Manhattan. Folks, get a grip. It's a penis, OMG run for the hills. Why is a penis so abhorrent to us when the female form is used so often and so blatantly to no such outcry? But I digress. His nudity was very in keeping with what he has become. Again, right on the money with the comic. The gore was a bit much, could have been artfully implied without actual entrails hanging from the ceiling, but again, faithful to the comic. As for the plot line of the film, I love it too. It's not the normal comic hero movie. It's an idea of what real people in hero costumes would be like. They would not be mythical, nearly perfect people who are in near perfect harmony with each other on issues of good and evil. I think Moore has a very real understanding of human nature, and it's not pretty. But it is real. I love Rorschach. Holy crap, was he perfect. I did not for one second question that he WAS Rorschach. Just brilliant. You don't like it fine. But don't bash it just because it wasn't the action flick you thought it was. Try looking into the movies you want to see, to see what they are really about, don't just take the previews word for it. The preview is not the movie, and one should not be judged on the merits of the other. Expand

never read the comic, but felt like it was too long, and Dr. Manhattan was boring... he was more of a robot than anything... i understand he's thinking on 8 planes of existence, but would have preferred something a bit more ominous to never read the comic, but felt like it was too long, and Dr. Manhattan was boring... he was more of a robot than anything... i understand he's thinking on 8 planes of existence, but would have preferred something a bit more ominous to make the character interesting. I can't believe people have given this a 10. You fanboys need to understand that even if it's a good adaptation of the comic, it doesn't make this a good movie. Most of the acting sucked, the action scenes were weak and the I can't believe people have given this a 10. Seemed too long and yet still crammed with a lot of uninteresting moments... Like everyone is just going through the motions and not taking time to focus at key moments that would motivate the audience to care about any of the characters. The visuals are the saving grace, obviously. Expand

wah wah wah about it being a)too gory (then go see high school musical3) b)too much sex scene (then go see coraline) c) they left so much out (true, but you try to fit the epicness that is watchmen into 2 hrs and 45 min and see what you have to leave beind. the original was 3hrs 45 min i would have sat for that and would have been thoroughly pleased. there is a lot cut out but that it what you get with movie adaptations.) d) they changed the ending (yeah i know, i like the monster better HOWEVER, not too bad switch either, in fact i thought people who havent read the book would like it a bit more.) /rant

anyway
a really good movie
saw it in Imax
would pay to see it again and buy merch
oh and by far the most idiotic reviewer on this website "Daren M."

Faithful to the comic, movie was interesting and moved smoothly between the different characters.
