This was a very faithful translation of the book. It shed only the unnecessary parts and kept the theme. The soundtrack and effects were well chosen.

This movie certainly won't appease the fanboys (but what actualy does?). The most drastic change in the plot between novel and movie was probably necessary to keep the movie under 3 hours long. The pacing of the various stories does well in keeping the overall movie moving. The use of The Times They Are A-Changin to tell the tale of the Minutemen is an ingenious way to give a background to the history of masked vigilanties. Having read the novel before seeing the movie, I have to say that people who expected every page to be present in the movie are dreaming. The screenplay holds onto Moore's ideas of a lost society and anyone who is angry Moore didn't take part in this adaptation have to realize he wouldn't have taken part in any retelling of his novel. The actors do an excellent job of portraying these beloved masked crusaders and I personally think every actor was perfect for their role. If this film was released later in the year we could easily be seeing James Earl Haley nominated for a Best Supporting Actor nomination. People have to go see this movie for what it is, an adaptation to what Time magazine called one of the 100 best novels of the past 80 years. Expand

Minus the explicit scenes it is a complete opposite of Zack Snyder's work on "300". It forces a moral question unto the audience and leaves you thinking. I still believe that this movie was too lengthy though. It could have ended during several diffrent scenes. For those of you that took your children to see it, do some research next time, read the novel, find out what you are taking While the movie was not perfect, it definitely included a lot of the novel and I was pleased with how it turned out. For those of you that took your children to see it, do some research next time, read the novel, find out what you are taking your 'impressionable' minds to watch. Little girls getting eaten by dogs, people getting ripped up, yeah, its all in there. Rape, mayhem, hell, they omitted a ton of violence. Just wait for the DVD of the comic 'black freighter' to come out. Riding on a boat made of the corpses of your fallen comrades?? The book discusses the depth of destruction, corruption and violence that society has fallen to. Nations at each others throats with the only chance of unity in the world riding on the shoulders of some worldwide disaster (i.e. 'Squid Thing' in the novel, nuclear bombs in movie) propelling people to take a look at what they value, what is worth fighting for. Should we fight each other or are there things out there worth making peace with our neighbor for that we might be stronger to battle evils that we alone cannot defeat. Remember, the novel was written back in the 80s, when the world was waiting for WWIII to destroy humanity. Those of you who went thinking 'omg superhero movie' need to actually read some variety of 'comic' books, because that is what it is, its a 'comic' not a superhero movie, and comics cover an extremely wide variety of genres. If you said worst movie ever, I'm sorry, off the top of my head, Cronicles of Riddick, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (another Alan Moore adaptation) are movies that come to mind just off the top of my head. But, as I stated earlier with the parents taking their kids to see this, if you are going to review something that is an adaptation, you need to actually 1.) read the novel the movie is going to be based on 2.) research information about the novel, because guaranteed, one read through does not get you all the subtle, in depth nuances and, lets face it, many of you out there are too stupid to get them anyway since you took your children to see this movie. and 3.) understand that novels turned into film are never going to be able to include everything (i.e. why you need to read the novel) and to include everything that would satisfy your inability to comprehend what is going on during the film would take 4+ hours and lets face it, I don't want to sit for 4 hours just because you are an idiot, I will wait for the unrated/extended version to come out on DVD, understanding that a lot of the novel cannot be included in the film and thus what they will include for viewers is what attracts the largest audience: sex and violence. Remember, Hollywood is about making money, their output is what sells the most, those of us that actually enjoy the novels that films are based on must at least wait for the DVD in order to actually see what the director wanted to include in the film to make an unbiased judgement on the film. Finally, I did knock the film 2 points because I agree that the soundtrack sucked and my 2 friends and one of their wives was with me and we all laughed at the soundtrack, but all of us thoroughly enjoyed the film. BTW: props to Snyder for actually showing Manhattan's penis, it was in the novel but I didn't think they would have the balls to put it into the film, so hats off for all the risks he took with this film. An Depressing and heavy handed, the story likes to pretend it has some deep philosophical statement about human kind, but mostly it just keeps slapping you in the face with mallet that has "Humans suck!" written on it in fingerpaint. An undeniably beautiful film, its just depressing and dark. None of the characters are likeable or have any sort of redeeming quality, and the few actually fun parts are far too short. I haven't read the graphic novel, but I have no doubt this would be better shown in narrative form because this movie just drains the life out of itself. I give it a 3 for excellent visual appeal, but I could not recommend this to anyone. Expand

The action scenes were beautifully executed and added a nice flare to what I expected to be a dead adaptation of the original masterpiece. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but my opinion alone cannot be trusted because of my familiarity with the story and Snyder's distinct style. Without knowing the plot, I can understand someone getting lost and without recognizing key scenes, I can also see how transitions could be abrupt. The story-telling was beautiful, the effects were well choreographed, and the acting was great. I can say that the changes were great, and overall it really faithfully captured the comic book. On the other hand, their were many un-needed moments. The violence was made a bit too graphic for the material. Made with all the finesse of a good horror movie, the action is portrayed more graphic than it even needs to be to be realistic. While many movies such as Sin City were able to go into graphic detail and violence, it was handled tastefully. In Watchment, it was the pure opposite. It's definitely not a perfect film, a couple aspects/scenes are pretty bad. Despite the almost three-hour length, the ending still felt rushed, and in the process, I feel that it lost some of the emotional impact that the book had. I had heard a lot about how bad Silk Spectre and Ozymandias were, so I went in with pretty low expectations for their characters. Their performances weren't as bad as I expected, but they definitely didn't have the emotional depth of the original characters. That being said, the film also has several brilliant moments and some great acting. The Comedian is great. I wish he were in it longer. He really is able to capture Blake's personality. Ditto for Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan, who are both perfect. The latter is a cgi character, but is given so much depth by Crudup's performance. My favourite part of the film is Manhattan's brilliant scene on Mars, when he is recounting his life. Had the entire film stayed on the same level as this scene, it would have been a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it doesn't. However, I'm willing to look past Watchmen's flaws and enjoy it's brilliant moments. Expand

To the dubious fanboys who actually rate this movie above 3, I suggest that you truly re-read Moore's masterpiece before presuming that its detractors have failed to intellectually digest the intricate themes of the original. I understand the difficulties inherent in adapting Watchmen to the screen and, to be fair, Snyder was incredibly faithful in maintaining the look, dialogue and basic plot elements of the original. A Watchmen film that runs at two hours and I understand the difficulties inherent in adapting Watchmen to the screen and, to be fair, Snyder was incredibly faithful in maintaining the look, dialogue and basic plot elements of the original. A Watchmen film that runs at two hours and forty minutes requires the economy of a poet. Defenders of the film have argued that Snyder has created the best adaptation of Watchmen possible given these constraints, but there was plenty of fat that could have been skimmed off the surface of this bloated, superficial adaptation. For example, why did the Comedian's death need to be an extended action sequence in an adaptation that leaves no room for superfluity? Not because it served the source material or even the film, but because Snyder couldn't help himself. Why does a goofy sex scene drag on interminably while a devastating international attack is practically glossed over? A simple matter of priority, I suppose. What Snyder lost in his supposedly dutiful translation of Moore's text is the emotional richness and relentless dramatic tension that makes the novel work in the first place. I didn't care about any of these characters, despite the generally phenomenal performances (with the exception of Akerman, Gugino and Goode). The film completely lacks any organic arc to carry the reader through its world, which is what sucks the life out of these performances. The sense of dread that slowly boils until it bubbles over in the graphic novel has been replaced with, "...and then...and then...and then," amounting to little more than a cheap game of 'connect the dots' for fans of the comic. By the time Ozymandius unveils his masterstroke, the impact is totally nullified. Indeed, why should we care about a nuclear holocaust in a film with nothing identifiably human about it? Why should we feel betrayed by Adrian Veidt when there's no humanity in the film worth saving? Ultimately, I loathed Watchmen not for it's excision of my favorite subplots or its atrocious soundtrack, but for its plasticity. I love the graphic novel for it's intellectual depth and subtlety of characterization, sure, but also for the way it makes me feel. The graphic novel moved me, while the film left me scratching my head. And in a film adaptation that leaves no room for excess, I would argue that Snyder worried far too much about superficial replication and sensationalism and too little about the human pulse of Watchmen. Shave off thirty seconds of a sex scene and give me thirty seconds of a newsvender making smalltalk with a smart alec kid, so that when a nuclear blast disintegrates them as they share a desperate hug in their final moments on a tragic planet, it actually means something. This film has no reason to exist other than as an exercise in nostalgia for Watchmen fans who haven't read the novel recently enough to remember what makes it work. Snyder understands how everything fits except people. Expand

The overall message from the graphic novel was there, middle aged vigilantism, and at times kept the same brooding nature. Some scenes were altered for continuity and to make the story line look like it happened in a a matter of days.
Changing the ending, though it may appear as heresy to the fans of the graphic novel, made the Watchmen acessable to a new audience while allowing for the Film to be shorter,
The music adds to the moment and some of the montages are fantastic.
The Film ignored many of the sub-plots and tiny relationships built up in Moore's work however if you look the relationships are there; they are just not as explicitly pointed out.
All in all a very good translation only stopped from being truly fantastic by the insistence of fight sequences and gore that adds nothing to the plot and seem to be there just so those who wish to see violence do not get bored.

I have a friend that was a guy who didn't read it that loved it, and a girl that did the same as well. I think it's ridiculous to point out minor faults in movie adaptations. If the watchmen was based directly on the novel without change, it would be a boring movie. Props to the writers for making it interesting. And Alan Moore was quoted saying it was "the best screenplay that they could've done". Sounds good to me. Violence wasn't over the top, and there wasn't much sex. It's rated R for a reason. Parents read the ratings. There is a point behind them. I'll agree the girl playing Silk Spectre was terrible, but the acting wasn't too awfully bad. And the slow-mo cams are mixed nicely with fast-mo cams for very interesting action sequences. I find it interesting that many of the negative reviews seem to be inconsistent with each other; one review may say CGI sucks while the other says its awesome, or one says music sucks and the other says its awesome. Normally, when a movie really sucks, the people generally agree on the suckiness. That being said, I thought it was a great movie that wove an interesting tale of "super-heroes" and their backgrounds into an over-arching characterization of life, the universe, and everything. There are many things going on and it may be difficult for some to follow but I thought the sequences and timing of most of the scenes worked really well into weaving all the stories into one. I think that the alternate reality 1980s was depicted well with some iconic 80s imagery as easter-eggs. I think the majority of the music was very capturing and well suited for the emotion and texture that was being conveyed. I think the representation of "super-heroes" from the 1940s was done very well. I don't think that slo-mo was over used because I can only recall two scenes that used it (although there are probably more). Obviously, if one is looking for a something specific they will see it predominantly whereas if you look at the bigger picture, you will ostensibly get the bigger picture. This movie is violent....and it should be. The scenes with extreme violence carry a message meant to be attached to a character or group of characters; these messages include: helplessness, superiority, survival, humanity, justice, evil, reality, and confusion. This movie is not for everyone but it stands very well on its own. I think this movie is nowhere near similar to Sin City or 300. This is a different class that deserves a view from a wide range of audiences that are looking for a different view of our past, present, and future (in science fiction terms.). Expand

Overall, an enjoyable enough adaption and probably as close as a movie is going to get to the source material. Some scenes work a lot better than others: Dr Manhattan's origin sequence is fantastic as are Rorshach's jail sequences. I actually enjoyed the ending which deviates somewhat from the source material as personally I don't think the graphic novel's ending would have worked on screen. Other moments didn't work at all and drag the movie down quite a bit, specifically Snyder's over the top gore and poorly inserted fight scenes as well as the most awkwardly staged sex scene ever filmed. Both of these elements jar with the rest of the movie which has enough moments of greatness to make it worthwhile. The soundtrack has the same problem in that when it works, it works well, and when it doesn't, it fails spectacularly. I understand it was in keeping with elements of the graphic novel but I don't think it was a good choice (oh, and to the reviewer who commented on the 'weird' cover of Hallelujah... thats actually the original version..). The cast vary pretty wildly with a standout being Jackie Earle Hayley who turns in a great, great performance, while others barely register at all beyond looking like their characters. Some of the dialogue lifted directly from the graphic novel just doesn't work when read aloud so I wouldn't say the fault is with the script. Despite its disjointed nature, its a movie well worth seeing provided you're not expecting a typical superhero movie. Just don't expect it to be brilliant. Expand

Alan Moore's graphic novel set a precedent in how it stirred the comic Who watches the watchmen? Not I...beyond terrible, just because you capture the visuals of the graphic novel doesn't mean you've got the spirit behind it. Alan Moore's graphic novel set a precedent in how it stirred the comic book world with the idea of super heroes of human origin and subtlety. It wasn't about rampant slow motion sequences, low budget acting due to matching the face of drawings (in order to appease a childish fanboy basis), nor having men punch men through columns. The subtlety lay in its creating a dark world with parallels and commentary on society of the time, granted, it was so prolific it still manages to be viable in today's society. The fantastical idea of Jon, Dr. M, gives us the conflict of a human enduring with the struggle of losing grip with emotion...of indulging so far on mathematical and absolute perception that humanity is no longer indivisible to him. The heroes are just run-of-the-mill burnouts, with only the two unstables remaining in play. Watchmen is such a human film...it was like the 1984 of comics. Zack Snyder doesn't know how to direct original films, lets see him try his hand at something that isn't a remake nor has been pitched to him by some big studio lackey looking for the next remake or adaptation to save Hollywood from its drought of unoriginality. What next? An American REMAKE of the Korean perfection that is Oldboy? Oh wait...that's already happening. On a final note...when you slow motion spit coming out of a man's mouth from a punch in order to capture the essence and "grit" of the comic book film, don't. When you make a movie like 300 that is 99.9% bullet time? Don't pretend that by making a 2hour 41minute fagfest with 66.6% bullet time that you're any more artsy and have variety up your sleeve. The CG looks like sci-fi channel cheap bullshit too...oh, and on a last note? Bullet time action sequences ruin a literary masterpiece, as Alan Moore said in so many words, some things just don't adapt well. Expand

Anyone who hasen't read the comic, however, might be a little confused about the opening sequence, which shows all the events prior to the present setting, which are all explained in the comic series. That aside, the plot of the movie was fine [Dark and gritty in a Sin City-esque way].... nothing mind blowing and actually mostly took a back seat to the individual characters themselves... but at least the story remained unpredictable to the end so that's good. Really for me the star of this movie isn't the plot, but rather two characters (even if at times they are overdone): Dr. Manhattan (his presence alone on camera commands God-like "oohs" and "ahhs") and the psycho that was Warshack, both of whom who could have warranted a movie of their own. The other masked "heroes" unfortunately were just bleh and really didn't carry the same character complexities to warrant much deep thought or attention. Definitely recommend at least one viewing... two on the other hand? That's debatable. Expand

Scriptwriting at its finest. Casting was brilliant, sets and effects were precisely what was needed, and the director clearly had exactly what he wanted in his mind as the film was being made. This movie is a must see for anyone who likes movies that are deeper and more meaningful than your run of the mill comic book movie. What people who gripe about this movie need to understand is that it is not a hero movie. Not about superheroes. it is the story of Ant-heroes. the characters ALL have deeply ingrained, deep-seated psychological issues. Also, they have yet to see the full picture, with the 'Tales of the Black Freighter' and 'Under the Hood' DVDs being released, and (Hopefully!) a directors cut will all reveal even more of the story, the characters and the plot. The biggest complaint many seem to have is related to the amount of violence, specifically concerning the portrayal of a rate and murder of a pregnant woman however, it should be noted that this violence is included as a character history, portraying that these events deeply scarred and deeply damaged the involved characters. Much of the negativity people throw around is centered on their own need to blame something for their ignorance or lack of understanding of the greater depths of this masterpiece. Expand

I never read the graphic novel. I saw the first trailer during The Dark Knight and thought wow, awesome trailer, I like that Smashing Pumpkins song and the way they made it work with the trailer, and the movie will never be this good. But my office was buying tickets to anyone interested and a couple friends of friends said it was good, so I decided to check it out. I'm not going to comment on the story, since I'm assuming it is based on the book. It was intriguing enough, besides one random heroic scene toward the end of the middle of the movie where I was like uh, that was pointless. As far as cinematography and such, there were too many popular songs in the film, but all but one worked (I forgot which one, somethin in the middle). The sex scene toward the end was also super cheesy and I wasn't sure if the director was trying to make it atrociously bad intentionally to show awkwardness or he just failed. Overall though, I liked the movie and would watch it again with a friend so I can talk about it with them instead of not wanting to spoil it haha. Expand

I thought this movie was great very true to the book which is pretty hard to say for most books turned into movies.

There is not much action for nearly three quarters of this 3 hour film. The plot of this film is very heavy handed, and thought provoking, but not for everyone. The writing of this movie is some of the best I've seen in recent years, and the acting for the most part compliments the acting excellently. I've never read the novel, but my friend who I saw it with says that they lifted most of the dialog directly from the book which was a great idea. No need to reinvent the subject matter that was portrayed so perfectly in the book. Overall, this is an excellent movie. I took away one point because the plot is a little dialog heavy and may bore certain people (but not me, I was refreshed actually to the usual superhero popcorn drivel) and there are a few cliche plot twists although they were slightly appropriate. My friend also explained to me the "Giand Squid Ending" (look it up), and to be honest I thought that would have been better but the ending was alright as is. Here's looking forward to the director's cut DVD with the proper ending. Expand

One of the finest pieces of cinema it has ever been my privilege to witness. The graphic novel was brought to life on screen with a scintillating mix of style and substance.

An interesting idea but ultimately a movie that is way too long and with a story that, while could have been gripping, is left stretched and devoid of punch. The fans of the original seem to love it, so only really can be recommended to them.

It met the expectations that I had from reading the graphic novel (with the exception of a few details that they left out). Rorschach and Silk Spectre II were dead on and all of their performances really reflected the deep psychological characteristics that each of the characters held. It is pretty long I guess, but regardless I would have stayed in the theatre two extra hours to see more of it. It's not the stereotypical "super-hero movie", so I would advise you not to take your children to go see it unless they can handle seeing gore, nudity, and sexuality. But if you are a fellow comic book nerd like myself and enjoyed "300," "V for Vendetta," and "The Matrix".... then grab your popcorn and Raisenettes and enjoy a mindblowing movie with awesome music and killer performances!!! Quite frankly, it's above you and your mere presence in the theater taints the absolute awesome-ness that is WATCHMEN. However, if you don't match the above criteria and have read the graphic novel and actually appreciated it, or even LOVED it, then see this film. Just as good as the Dark Knight if not better. Snyder stays true to the source material (which is on TIME's list of 100 GREATEST NOVELS OF ALL TIME, yeah... that's right) and has transferred it to film like no other could. The themes are crystal clear to those that actually like to think at the movies. Entertaining, engaging, beautiful, and thought-provoking... one of the greatest comic book movies of all time. Enjoy! Needless to say I became an instant fan and have been anticipating this film for quite some time. I recently saw Watchmen and was very pleased with how much attention was given to detail by Zach Snyder. A few element of the story were left out, but the main elements were flawlessly portrayed throughout the entire film. I can see how someone could get lost in the film if they had not read the novel. However, anyone who enjoyed the film, will very much enjoy the graphic novel. GO READ WATCHMEN Expand
