Whats up with the low scores? I mean does Zach Snyder owe some of the critics money. I mean does Zach Snyder owe some of the critics money. This movie not only sticks true to the graphic novel (Which I loved) it transfers it perfectly on screen and maybe he used a little to much slow motion but it adds style to the best graphic novel in history. You may hate but it has a great soundtrack, it does Alan Moore justice and Rorschach was perfect maybe the Silk Spectre could have done a better job but she is hot so who cares and futhermore Zach did a great job of elimanting "Under The Hood" and "The Black Freighter" because it would have confused anyone who hasn't got a chance to read the novel. And for those who did and wanted see both of those segments can rent it on a seperate disc. I guess the guys who went to see it and gave it a low score expected to see another spider-man. I understand Alan Moore does want to see this movie get done but it doesn't mean it's gonna suck. For Gods sake just apperciate the film and Zach's god given talent to transfer graphic novel to the screen. Expand

I wanted to see something spectacular that went with all the extreme hype, one thing I can say the fight scenes were on the mark. But when I hear comments from others stating "It can be compared to the Dark Knight" there is no comparison! Heres how you can compare this movie, it is like going from Sin City (which had a great storyline)to a cheaper version like the Spirit(which was all over the place) then trying to pass it off as a great film. Hopefully there will be better writing in the next series for the Watchmen cause America wants to see a little less talk and alot more action, If you bill the movie as a superhero action film, make it so, not a drug out love story or a wheres Waldo approach , thats a good way to lose the audience. However they are superb for different reasons. Watchmen is a beautiful, witty, poignant, bittersweet, breathtaking, dreamy, heartaching, beautiful film. But it also has moments of awesomeness, fun, gory violence and layered humour, sardonic dialogue, wryness, irony and a complex interesting narrative. I feel I must comment on the negative reviews this gets from a wide amount of people. Excluding those people who simply turned off by it for some reason, I really feel there is a HUGE amount of sour, humourless critics, and even some political activists (let's say christians-just read their reviews), trying to damage this film, Watchmen. They seem to hate the film for what makes it so successful. It challenges many assumptions, which is what makes it so great. anyway, it's sad to see these negative, sometime politically motivated attacks.....I really hope the people who created it know why it's being attacked like it is and can ignore these haters who want films like this crushed. Why would they do this? I can only give this film 10. Expand

Being a fan of the graphic novel, I think that Zack Snyder did faithful job, though I had wished that the side characters had more screen-time (I now have the Director's Cut on Blu-Ray, and they are included a little more, as with a few scenes from the novel that fans will recognize). When I got the said Director's Cut on Blu-Ray, I started to watch it more like a cinema goer who had not read the comic. It immediately went from an 8 to a 9. This is a REALLY GOOD FILM. The acting is terrific (Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Billy Crudup as Doctor Manhattan are standouts), the sets are superb, the music very well placed (the opening credits are perfect, you'll love them even more if you'd read the graphic novel), and the story interesting. Billy Crudup truly brings Doctor Manhattan to life, it is impossible to care for humanity, but he tries so hard to. J.E.H. is definitely the best as Rorchach: He's cool and dark in the mask, but once you see his face, he is absolutely convincing (my favorite part of the movie, among others, was when after he threw the hot oil on a prisoner who was about to shiv him and security is taking him away, he says "What you don't understand... I'm not locked up in here with you... YOU'RE LOCKED UP IN HERE WITH ME!"). What will probably turn some people off is the violence, which is actually more brutal than in the comic. I think that Snyder did this to contrast with normal superhero movies, in which violence is spectacular and you cheer the hero on. This movie is showing that it's not stellar, it's dark, twisted, unpleasant, and sometimes just plain hard to look at. The tones and angles of different shots re-enforce the feeling of a noir movie, which I really like. Most of the people I initially saw the movie with didn't think much of Matthew Goode's portrayal of Ozymandias, but I believe that he made him much more sinister and jaded than in the comic, and I would like to compliment him for that (not like he's reading this review or anything). Plus, a nice touch was the german accent when he spoke in private (you can't exactly do that in the comic, *wink*). Overall, a great movie. In my opinion, it works for both fans of the graphic novel and cinema goers. If you do decide to see this, please get the Director's Cut. It's longer, but it's worth it, especially if you are an initial Watchmen fan. Expand

I'm not a comic book afficionada by any means, but I like a well-told dramatic story on the big screen. This movie is almost worth seeing just for the opening credits sequence alone! Bob Dylan's The Times They Are A-changing is used brilliantly against a backdrop of comic-historic vignettes. Truly a brilliant opening. But then, as other reviewers have noted, it doesn't (can't?) really live up to this amazing opening page. Still I found it to be occasionally brilliant in certain scenes, just lacking overall coherence. Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Malin Akerman are especially good in their roles. This one is worth renting, but I'm sure it disappointed many Watchmen fans. Expand

I didn't think it was too long or winded, I can say thanks to my attention span for that one. I thought it was a great movie that some people are clearly just angry that it wasn't exactly like the GN or some people just don't like using that thing in their heads to formulate ideas without being spoon fed. I guess without an explosion happening every 5 seconds its hard to concentrate for some. And this to parents who brought their children to see this; it was rated R for starters, and another thing is as a responsible adult background information or a little bit of homework should be done on the movie so you don't have children watching how babies are made. I think this will stand well over time and it Zack did a fine job attempting to translate the "untranslatable" to the big screen. Expand

Having seen the movie a second time, I began to dislike it more and more. The movie starts out interesting, but after the first hour, it begins to drag on, and on, and on, for a whopping two hours and forty-five minutes, and soon the audience's attention to the apparent doomsday clock is transferred to the watches on their wrists. Also, the plot has numerous inconsistencies, such as the lack of depth of all of the heroes and the pointless subplots associated with the over-exaggerated ongoing conflict between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. I believe that only the apostles of the graphic novel will remain faithful to its unconventional film adaption. Although the movie has numerous holes to trip in, there is amiable land to run on as well. The action scenes satisfy the hungry, and the small humorous moments capture the moviegoer's attention, even if just for a moment. The distinct type of hero portrayed in the film (tough-fisted, clever, and strong). Expand

It is a superhero movie as a vehicle only to shatter our smugness and should not really be in the Spiderman and Batman argument (despite Heaths brilliant part coming close to the same mayhem in us all) but I think in Watchmen we have a much grander canvas and a more unsettling image. Again, it wreally starts to get boring after a while, you start to wonder where the movie is heading, or what did you actually learn after 2 hours watching the movie. Also, Dr. Manhattan is very well done, but most of his parts could have been summarized instead of long useless dialogues. Overall graphically this movie is splendid but it ends there. I found it entirely engrossing and entertaining, despite the few obvious flaws (a glowing blue phallus onscreen far too often was a bit much; no true purpose was given to certain scenes). If you're on the fence about this one, I think you're better off seeing it than not. The visuals and characters are interesting, the premise is unique if a little wacky, and the very genre requires suspension of disbelief that I imagine you will have already gone through by the time you're seeing it. Hey if I have ADHD and was able to sit through the movie, it was damn good! Leaving the theater wanting to see the supposed theatrical release of the Director's Cut, it had to be even better! Why did it get such mixed reviews? The critics expecting a carbon copy of the book or just hated the movie before release, likely due to their opinions that it was the "unfilmable novel," were disappointed, due to very unfair biases. I can attest to the fact that some frames of the movie, could be digitally enhanced to look like frames from the comic book and visa-versa, meaning if that frame of the movie were an actual photograph, the comic panel would be a tracing of that photograph! But you can't expect everything to match! Some comic book elements don't translate to a perfect screenplay. Why wasn't Spider-Man criticized for giving Spidey the power to naturally produce web, instead of using cartridges, and making the Green Goblin a high-tech, glider-riding psycho, instead of the original Halloween costume wearing weirdo, even depicted as riding a broom in the original animated series? That movie was adored by most critics, and me. You can't expect a movie to get enormous critical success when it has such a devout cult following. It's sort of like my favorite music; heavy metal, heavy, heavy metal. Most people hate it, but all the underground headbangers and metalheads love it! Then when a softer, mainstream metal band hits, most devoted underground listeners hate it, even if critics praise the music! As for Watchmen; if you are a typical moviegoer, you will enjoy Watchmen, however, if you are a not-so-underground, die-hard, cult, original comic book worshiper, than you will hate it. Hopefully, as I have, you can appreciate both works, for the separate forms of art they are, and understand they aren't meant to kill one another, they just appeal to different crowds, and be part of both those crowds! If you pay attention to politics and the worldwide push for globalization and a NWO, this film is haunting. I went and read the graphic novel afterwards. It is, of course, better. Why make an exact copy in cinematic form? If you want an honest representation, read the novel. As a film, Watchmen was great. It was also fairly close to the novel and dead-on in many aspects. Alan Moore is a completely different beast. The Watchmen graphic novel is famous because of it's depth and rightly so, but there is just too much to translate to the big screen in one movie. The Watchmen is a big story, it would of worked better on HBO as a TV series, adapted by Milch of course. One movie, even nearly 3 hours long, was never going to fit everything in. And what a long 3 hours it was! The cinema release should not have tried to be a copy of the book, there is just too much backstory to be told, save that for the extended DVD version. Peter Jackson had the same problem with the LORT trilogy, which has even more backstory than Watchmen. Instead of bloating the entire movie with continual flashbacks, he just put the important historical stuff at the beginning as a monologue spoken by Galadriel, it was all over in about ten minutes. The Watchmen movie had too much exposition, and not enough narrative. The main plot was interesting, but was always interrupted by the character flashbacks. I don't think this was good for the continuity of the film because it just drew out the conclusion longer and longer. Expand

A couple of points really didn't work (Fucking to Cohen, for example) and Synder needs a bit to trust the audience a bit more sometimes instead of hammering a point home (Big Figure's death in the prison riot would have been much better without the camera pointlessly going back to reveal the blood coming out from under the bathroom door) - but these are small points in an overall damn good effort. I thought the story was an absolute classic, the ending probably being my favorite part. Yes I did have a few qualms with the movie, such as Silk Spectre's acting job, but nothing too serious. I thought the special effects were beautiful. The music during specific scenes such as "The Times are A-Changing" and "Sound of Silence" were meticulously placed. Obviously, most folks tend to look past its complexity and into the realm of immaturity to escape a movie that puts their brain to the test. This movie doesn't compare to the greatness of the graphic novel, but i tell you that the complexity of Alan Moore's work is still present throughout the movie. So, maybe just maybe, if you didn't understand the movie the first go around; take your time and watch it again, and perhaps you will find a more concrete understanding the second go around. I confess that I did not fully understand the graphic novel after the first read, but my second read through, I started to see the story a bit more clearer; the same I believe goes for the movie, as well. The film has its flaws as well, but i do honestly believe some of them will be corrected in the Director's Cut. The responsibility of the director/screenplay writer is to 'interpret' the book, knowing full-well that they cannot duplicate the force of that work (Watchmen being an excellent example). If I had to judge this movie based on its faithfulness to the graphic novel, it would be a one. But my responsibility as someone watching an adaption of a wonderful book is to critique the 'interpretation' of Watchmen, which is a definite 9 (admirable cinematics, incredible type-casting, respectable pacing, discerning use of special effects, etc.). It was impossible for Snyder to choose between "book fidelity" and "doing-his-own-thing;" in the end, you can only have a satisfying interpretation. Expand

And frankly, I was impressed by the amount they managed to get on screen. The editing was a bit strict, but the movie is already 2 and a half hours without half the content of the comic. Really, the thing you have to remember is that if you're looking for the new Dark Knight, you're looking at the wrong movie. So chances are you won't be impressed if you haven't read the comic. Bottom Line: Fans of the Comic rejoice. Expand

Why are some of the characters the same age 50 years ago, while others grow up? Why would the villain bother going after the watchmen instead of just doing what he planned to do in the first place? What is that thing on Mars? Why does that one guy have a purple tiger? There is not a single character I could give a crap about in this film, not one. Unless you read the comic book (I beg your pardon, "graphic novel") there is absolutely nothing in this movie that is worth the cost of admission. For the record, I loved the 300 and Sin City, so it's not that I don't "get it". Expand

Absolutely horrid. There is no discernible plot. The dialogue is atrociously bad that it makes George Lucas look like Shakespeare. And, oh god is it long.

One of the worst movies I've seen in the past 5 years. To me this is a prime example of how the movie industry has lost its way.

A great movie that only suffered from unsubtle music choices for soundtrack and not enough time to actually explain everything that is happening in the background for the main storyline.

I read the graphic novel within a week of seeing the film, and I have to say the transition is incredibly faithful. Folks that say the transition was way off clearly read the comic back in the eighties, because more than half of the comic's scenes are directly in the film, dialogue and all. The same themes are conveyed, aside from the parallel Mariner side story being excluded (to be included in the special features, I hear). Zack Synder is to be commended. Aside from outfit changes, the characters are the same. Most of the alterations to scenes are aesthetic, or cut out for redundancy. To parents out there, you're not very good at your job if you took your kids to the movie and were appalled at the content. This movie isn't rated G or PG13, it's pretty clearly labelled as an adult film. And it's great BECAUSE of not just another comic book movie, it's a bit more meaningful. Also, softcore porn? There were one and a half sex scenes. Have you watched...anything...in the past 30 years...film or otherwise? There were identical scenes in the comic. Archetyping? Watchmen the graphic novel had archetypes. Sorry to rain on fanboy parades there. Expand

So, I won't belabour that perspective. Here's the important part of the flick you might have missed: a nerd has an office place accident which leaves him with a barrel chest, washboard abs and a large penis. Wow! I want to know which office that guy works in! Ok, he's a little short on tan, well, in fact, he is blue but, hey, I'm a nerd and I want to have an office place accident which will leave me with a physique which even Laurie Juspeczyk gawks at. This mishap near the water cooler is the quintessential superhero fodder: the nerd is, after all, Superman. Perhaps we like this because it makes us, the powerless, feel empowered. How many CEO's with a gaggle of concubines and a wad of millions in their wallets go to see superhero movies? These movies are for us, the powerless, to feel better. Only, this movie does not quite do that. If superheroes existed in the real world, then this is how it would be: we ordinary humans are, as Dr. M said, little more than termites to a superbeing. Deep stuff. If there had been less blood in this film, I would have given it a 10. The blood detracted unnecessarily from what was originally a good tale by Alan Moore et al. Expand

Don't expect Spiderman or The Dark Knight. I thought this movie was much more driven by the plot and the characters than the action (although I thought the scattered action sequences were great). The characters are very fleshed out--their motivations, histories and flaws are revealed in coordination with the plot in a manner I thought very effective. The characters, plot, and even soundtrack do a great job depicting the setting, which is really an integral part of the film's meaning. It was thought-provoking without being preachy, had good plot and action, and showed some pretty good skin. All around winner as long as you don't go in expecting a blow-em-up shoot-em-up action overload. Expand

He chose to stick so closely to the comic at parts and then totally make up an entire scene at another. Instead of using oldies which I like should have scored the whole movie. The comic is infinitely better. It has the whole story. It has the story within the story. The format totally ruined the Watchmen experience. I feel like those that only know the movie have been robbed of one of the best pieces of all time. Its not the worst movie ever but it is very far from the best. Expand

I knew nothing of the book or tghe characters. I found the movie experience thrilling from the first moment. It aimed high and had serious themes under the story. A great movie going experience and arresting visuals - fresh and yet satisfying.
