I love Blizzard, and for the most part the entertainment products they have provided through the years are generally felt to be of high quality and standards.

This rating of Zero is more a symbolic gesture, meant to offset at least one of the auto-erotic-blizzard-is-infallable-and-my-life-is-empty-otherwise 10's

This movie was, in a hyphenated-word, Fan-Service.

Several other reviewers down here have made far more articulate points about How and Why this was a really...really...Really Bad Movie.

Do I truly believe it's a 'Zero' ... No. More like a high 2 or a low 3 with the weight of that resting solely on the incredible CGI team - but as stated above, this is really a symbolic review and rating meant to - at the very least - offset an undeserved 10 that was based on someone having a massive nerd-gasm rather than approaching it objectively.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I generally liked Warcraft. The acting and visuals were fine. I felt like I was stepping into a videogame. I thought the film stumbled in that it depended on the audience knowing the backstory of the games. They provided some of the information, but the overall plot is just absent. I still have no idea why Medivh did what he did. How did he become corrupted by the Fel? It doesn't make any sense. It is just setting up the next movie. Expand

As usual, critics have no idea what they are talking about. Movie was a lot of fun. Did a pretty good job of condensing a ton of lore into one movie. Only problem is: now I'm excited for a Thrall movie!

First of all the CGI for the orcs! That might be the best CGI characters I have ever seen in a movie ever. While I agree the human side of the story lacked some depth, the orc side was very compelling. You felt for these characters Durotan, Garona and Orgrim were very well done. Gul'dan was a very terrifying villain and really evokes great emotion on screen. The actors who did play human characters, notably Medivh and Lothar were excellent. The battle scenes were friggen awesome. This movie is HIGHLY underrated in my opinion.

This movie is a boring, confusing, garbled mess. And I say that as a fan of Warcraft.

Of course hardcore fans are going to support it no matter what, but a film that introduces dozens of characters without explanation, breaks the film-making rule of "show don't tell" constantly, and rushes through the plot with no regard for pacing, is a BAD FILM.

Even with a talented director; a video game based movie will never be four star material. The same will probably be proven by Assassin's Creed. Warcraft however was better than I expected and one of the better video game based movies.
The film still lacked great story telling though or a good reason for existing. However the musical score was at least solid and there was some good fantasy; I admit. In the end it probably would been better if they didn't leave it open for sequels. The film is a hit in China. In the U.S, it might not have been enough of a hit for sequels unfortunately.

No. Did I like it? No. I’m just disappointed in it. This could have been a great film, it had all the potential for that, but it doesn’t work due to its poor pacing, poor characterisation and an ending which had a fight scene that was so laughably boring and it felt like the film ended on a bum note and that the sequel is just going to be rather more of the same rather than expanding the story. The film tries to be an amazing epic but it doesn’t build up its world and characters before it tries to go into that and all the character revelations and twists are really things that the majority of which should have been saved for the 2nd movie of this proposed trilogy. As it stands, however, it’s a bit of a mess. The performances aren’t great with the exception of a couple of the Orc actors, the effects are very good and reflect the video game well but are wasted because they don’t blend well with the live action actors and I just didn’t buy into this story entirely. It’s a real shame because when you take all the Hollywood adaptations of video game movies, this one is still the best, but that’s just because the bar has been set so horribly low. It’s really only there by default. This is the best one and I still don’t think it’s good. I’m certain fans will get something out of this, and just seeing these environments realised on the big screen will probably give them some joy, but I don’t judge a film by its aesthetics. I judge it by the story and the characters it gives me as well and this film wasn’t good enough with the exception of the Orcs who I thought were ok for the most part. It’s so concerned about building up an epic trilogy that it forgets to get its first part down completely. Expand

The potential impact of this film was obvious, gamers who are hungry for high quality film adaptations of their favorite games, are still waiting for a film to prove that it can be done. Warcraft is cliched, poorly written, and not as entertaining or deep as it could and therefore should have been. I don’t want people thinking I hated this movie, because it did some things well and plenty of people have said they enjoyed it, I simply didn’t.
The most painful thing about the movie was that it had a lot of good aspects, but as a whole the film felt a little weak. One major problem I had with this film was that it reminded me too much of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. Regardless of the agitation that statement will incur out of die hard fans, one prime example is the main antagonist of the film, the orcs, ride around on giant evil looking wolves, just like in Lord of the Rings. Above that the film as a whole looked too digitized, where in certain scenes, everything in the scene looked digitally created.
The movie was directed by the immensely talented Duncan Jones, and to be honest the world he creates, is very intriguing. However, the script was a major weakness of this film, because inside this film is a cool story worth telling but it was overcrowded with weak characters and muddled storytelling. The film leaps around so much, trying very hard to tell a dense story, that it becomes very hard to follow, and almost impossible to care about any characters. From a technical standpoint it jumps around so much, that at times the film disregards explanation.
The weak story, and rushed pacing make the film feel overcrowded, and hard to really enjoy. While some of the characters had very cool development, many of them flash through for momentary exposition and then disappear for 20 minutes. The orc villain is admittedly cool to look at, albeit a little one dimensional, but the overall evil force in the film is essentially an unexplained force. The film really never feels like it entertains or challenges like Jones’ other films (Moon and The Source Code), it just trudges forward.
It isn’t a terrible film, and I’m guessing many will enjoy this film, if for no other reason than that it is a good 2 hour escape from reality. That being said for those who are looking for a entertaining, witty, original film this just isn’t really that, as it never allows itself to delve deeply into any scene. The film features a great amount of potential, which only serves to make the muddled end result even more depressing, as the film clearly could have been better. All-in-all I think kids will like this film, but for those who want a great film, this just isn’t quite that.

They got the scenery, characters and Lore right and the movie is true to the video game with its look and feel and story, even adding some clarification to the history of the world of Azeroth where the story takes place. I don't generally like movies based on video games but I enjoyed this one. Is it a Hollywood blockbuster? - no. Is it what is should be - a decent tribute to the video game it is based on with decent quality CGI and acting - yes. If you are a fan of the World of Warcraft video game or ever have been then you will enjoy this movie. I think it can still be enjoyable by people who haven't played the game too. At least it has originality compared to all of the lousy Hollywood reboots that have been put out lately. It is just a fun movie, no gender politics or anything thrown in to ruin it as has happened to many other franchises lately. Expand

Thank you so much for doing such a perfect adaptation from the game, I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. I know Warcraft 3, but did not play WoW much, I even watched this movie twice and still I have been entertained greatly. Some people wrote, that they didnt like the characters. Durotan was a great character: full of wisdom. I liked his calm way of solving problems. Medivh and Khadgar were very interesting characters also and all of them fit perfectly into the Warcraft world. Only Lothar was a bit unsympathic in the beginnning.

There is another thing I liked so much: I was often wondering, why there are not so many fantasy movies with a lot of spells, like in the games. With the spells you can play with beautiful effects, they would fit in there a lot. And here you have many spells.
Another thing that I liked was the perspective of the film: I saw much more about the orc culture than that of the humans. It was very interesting.
The story is superb also with some sad moments.

So please, do the 2nd part.

They could've made this an awesome 2-hour story taking place within World of Warcraft, following a band of adventurers on a quest, any quest, to make it more modern and appeal to those who started their journey in this world with WoW.
But no, they had to abide to the generic school of average movies that says that any movie should be the start of a franchise and has to start with the origins story; also the older the source material is the more you have to mess it up and twist it so that it appeals to young audiences because god forbid they might experience something new and have a thought that's not marketable.

Lothar, the noble knight taught in the ways of history and war, is now a joker that throws cracks left and right and acts more like he's an innkeeper than anything. I will ignore the accent which is all over the place, but seriously, could you not take 10 minutes to read the lore? The original one, not the wiki entries. Also he has a love interest with Garona. Lolz.

Gul'dan, the necromantic orc that corrupted the orcs by playing at their strings and working from behind the shadows? He's the strongest of them all now. Yeah he basically leads the horde; Blackhand's not even dead yet. The whole coma bit and Cho'gal? Doomhammer taking control of the horde? Never happened.

Llane? He's alright; died fighting the horde in a heroic attempt to close the dark portal. That thing with Garona assassinating him? Forget about it; never happened. Oh they closed the portal by the way. Yeah; why would you think it would take ages of battle and two wars to close it?

I could go on but i'll just get angrier. Again, a slap in the face to everyone who was raised fascinated by the Warcraft universe and who saw Blizzard as gods. They were so desperate to start a franchise going, they mixed Warcraft 1, Warcraft 2 and Warlords of Draenor into one, mutated, mess of a movie. It is an abomination and made me realise how little the screen writers knew about the game's history and how little Blizzard cared.

Can't wait to see Warcraft 2; Garona saves Lothar, they adopt Thrall and move in with Khadgar in a nice house on the seaside in Redridge where Thrall learns to be a paladin and forms the Knights of the Silver Wrist. Please, do it. I mean if you're gonna f*ck it up so badly, go all the way. Hell, let's get Uwe Boll to direct the next one.

The movie spends too little time developing characters and too much time showcasing lore-references such as Ironforge, Dalaran and high elves, that for a non-wow fan the whole presentation may seem very random and difficult to grasp.

The visuals alone are also very interesting to touch upon. At times it is a beautiful movie. The orcs are well executed and the landscapes are gorgerous, but the human armor and much of the props give it a very B-movie feel for most of the runtime. The story is relatively straight forward, but the characters fall flat and those were the most important to get right. Anduin Lothar is assumably a caring father and a competent soldier, but we only really see him as the latter. Many of the other characters, such as the king and Blackhand, don't really have much of a personality and they appear as common character cutouts from other movies. The only character with a clear motivation and compelling struggle is Durotan. The rest fall flat. Overall the movie is a visual marvel and as a fan it is great to see some of the characters and landscapes from the games up on the big screen. As a movie in its own right, the story premise is too simple, the characters are not compelling and some scenes feel random, unimportant and underutilized.

I went with 2 friends, a guy and a girl, who have never touched the Warcraft series at all and know nothing about it. They both really enjoyed the movie and zero problems following it.

The CGI was FANTASTIC, the magic looked good and fit within the Warcraft world. Acting varied from good to meh. Some of the best moments were between Durotan and Drakka. They had great chemistry, especially for being CGI orcs.

Yes, the movie is flawed and Duncan Jones has already commented on how much he had to cut to meet studio demands for the length. This was detrimental to several plot points (such as never explaining what happened to the orc homeworld, what fel is, etc).

I'm hoping the film made enough to warrant a sequel so that we can begin moving to the games that actually had stories (WC1, what this film was based on, was the most bare-bones plot of all the games).

I don't think I've ever seen such a large difference before. It's like the critics are analyzing this from the perspective of emotionless robots with checklists to go through while the users are living breathing humans coming from a living breathing world where "WarCraft" has been possibly the most successful video game franchise of all time and a fondly remembered part of tens of millions of childhoods and young-adulthoods. These things matter. The quality of a piece of art is not only in the art object itself, it's also in the social environment, in the art consumers' expectations. If it fits the audience and generates intense resonance in the audience, it's good art, regardless of any boxes ticked or not ticked on some dead-inside "quality inspectors"' checklists. Expand

And although the movie felt great to watch, just with a fully polished storytelling could've been a masterpiece.

Played all the strategy games back in the day, but never played the MMO so don't know where it fits. Looks halfway between LOTR and GOT, pretty much about like Battleship. Ben Foster (best roles are Hell or High Water and Narcos) is the only recognizable face, he does about 4 movies a year and is pretty much the redneck Tom Hanks. What I noticed most in this movie is that if the camera moves during an action sequence there is a lot of screen tearing. Also, the movie i saw before this was Tokyo Story from 1953. That movie used 'pillow shots' which are pretty scenery separating any conversation or action scene, and this movie would have benefitted from that. And some characters, these characters are cardboard. The main protagonist looked like a beefy Zach Braff from Scrubs, it was fun to imagine him in the role, my favorite thing of this movie. Expand

And it would be wonderful if this film crept up to the amazing Lord of the Rings. Of course, Warcraft is not the Lord of the rings, I can't compare them. However, this is a very good fantasy. Even the hobbit was much weaker than Warcraft.
Probably a lot will not be understandable to people who are not familiar with the lore of the game, but it does not hurt to enjoy the movie! I don't know lore, but the questions to the movie I have almost was not, and some dramatic scenes I was in shock. The film is very beautiful, orcs are very realistic. Well, what kind of graphics not lost the plot. It keeps the screen on, and after I want to review the film. Warcraft is a great movie. It's from fans for fans, and it feels.
Was it possible to shoot better? I don't know. Ideally you need a series. But what happened is good, the best fantasy of recent years.

This movie was so good but only if you're a fan of the games. It was either bad or decent for a regular audience and no, I'm not saying that this movie sucks, it just had so much potential to "BLOW THE F*** OUT OF EVERYBODY'S MIND!" This is one of the best video games movie by far but this movie had so much potential to be one of the greatest films of all time (like Lord of the Rings). I don't blame the director, Duncan Jones because he did his best to fit in everything he knew the movie could be but the studio panicked and cut 40+ minutes of useful & valuable scenes of the movie! That's what made some of the humans characters so **** because there's no character development and that's why you needed those scenes to stay. Like Duncan Jones stated: "Trying to make a movie like Warcraft, and trying to do it in a unique way... you get killed by a death of 1,000 cuts. Not just editing cuts. It's little changes that seem really innocuous. As a filmmaker the only way that I understand how to make a film is holistically. Every choice that I make, whether it is story or character or costume, all works together. When you make a little change it doesn't seem like a big deal. When you keep making those little changes, especially over three and a half years, suddenly you're basically spending all of your time trying to work out how to patch up what has been messed around with. I was able to maintain Durotan and Draka's relationship, keep it feeling like a real relationship between a husband and wife, and those two characters being orcs. That was something that I pitched right from the start, and fought hard for, and was able to keep that in there. That always felt like a real win. SEQUEL? If there were an opportunity for us to make another film in the Warcraft universe I really feel like we did the hard work in the first movie as far as setting the table. I would love to capitalize on three and a half years of hard work and be able to have some fun in that world now that I've done the hard work. [So] who knows? Maybe I'm just being a masochist. What drives the Director crazy about Warcraft? I'm equally proud and furious about Warcraft. I love it. I spent so much time on it. I put all my heart into trying to make it work. Parts of it, I think, work, but it also drives me crazy that I wasn't able to push through everything that I knew needed to happen in order to make the film I knew it could be. Expand

Working through my Blu-Ray backlog, I finally reached Warcraft. This is a movie that is obviously based off of Blizzard's iconic Warcraft series in order to milk that IP for all of its financial worth.

Did it succeed?

I would say Yes. Largely.

In fact I would recommend this film to anyone who wants a comfortable fantasy flick and I even finished the film with a smile on my face. I will state for balance that I have been a player of Blizzard's series since Warcraft 3 and played World of Warcraft until the end of Arthas' story in patch 3.3, so take that as you will.

The film is effectively the first video game compressed and changed in order fit into the 123 minutes run time and it actually works without leaving too much for the audience the wonder about. The major heroes and villains of the movie are both played well, although I will say that those on the Human side: Lothar, Khadgar and King Llane (played by Travis Fimmel, Ben Schnetzer and Dominic Copper respectively) did seem a bit wooden and at times even a little tired. But it did not have a jarring impact on the film. Even with the huge amounts of CGI the Orc actors portrayed themselves well and were thoroughly believable. Except maybe Paula Patton, playing Garona the half-orc, she did seem very robotic even in the emotional parts.

The CGI was fantastic and was great for the larger scale battles but it does look odd in close up - there is a scene early on with Durotan and wife where it really hits you with the Uncanny Valley. But overall the CGI is consistently strong, from the actors to the battle effects. I will say however that the entire movie felt too clean, too fake. I know that is odd to say however it is true. If one was so watch Lord of the Rings after this then they will see what I mean. There is violence in this movie but there is no grit.
There were also some wonderful cameos from the other races of Warcraft which I really hope that will appear in a sequel. The Story itself is effectively altered retelling, but although I was annoyed at this, for anyone trying to get into the Warcraft IP it does a decent job balance things it tells you and things it leaves you wondering about. If you want to tease people with a bigger world beyond this film then this is how you do it.

Overall I would say this is a successful video game movie adaptation, and considering the sheer amount of cockups by companies in the past to jump industries, Warcraft does exceedingly well - just like World of Warcraft did when it first launched. It has problems and really I would never to go see this movie in at launch - a DVD/Blu-Ray definitely though. But that is only due to the fact that cinemas are just so damn expensive and this isn't an AAA production that is worth the extortionate price.

I still do not know what Blizzard did not decide to make a Trilogy based off of Arthas Menethil's story - But I am hopeful that Blizzard will see that they have some decent stories that can be turned into decent films.

In this case, the source material is “Warcraft”, an extremely successful video game series that chronicles the clash between humans and invading orcs in the fantastical universe of Azeroth.

When I picked up this movie, kind of curious about the name and a brief description, I didn't know it was a movie inspired by the world of computer games. I confess that it is not the type of film I like the most, most of the time the films are of inferior quality and have little interest stories. This film does not escape this norm much: the script is good, as far as we are willing to accept it, but the story told and the film, as a global work, lack emotion, soul and life. It's an uninteresting film, visually showy and elegant, but it doesn't know how to hold our attention with a really good story.

From the human cast, I would highlight the positive work of Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel, Dominic Cooper and Paula Patton. Without their efforts, the film would inevitably be more artificial and boring. Still, no actor has done a remarkable job and the cast effort is bland. The orcs are, for the most part, graphic figures that someone has lent their voice to, well distorted digitally.

It is the technical aspects that the film truly bets on: through the overwhelming use of CGI and high technology, the film brings us a realistic and visually spectacular Azeroth, as you would expect in a film based on a video game. The visuals and sound effects are very good, and the combat scenes are epic, with armies fighting each other realistically and a welcome dose of action. The costumes used by the human cast are detailed and are fully in keeping with the rest of the film.

And on that point, my biggest praise I can give this film is that the aesthetics are completely loyal to how the games look and feel. However, this and the fairly competent action direction don't make up for the rest of this film feeling so empty. It has the most basic of plot-lines, the world-building doesn't expand much beyond the occasional fan-pandering, and an ending that is completely pointless beyond the set up for a sequel we will probably never see. I should probably hate this more than I do, but I left with less of a sour taste in my mouth as much as I did with an unanswered query: who is this for?! (apparently, a fair amount of people in China, according to the box office...)

And it isn't because I am fan of warcraft universe, it's because this movie is really interesting and exciting. How much detail in this film! Of course, more people don't understand many things as Blackhand screams lok'tar ogar(Victory or death) or don't understand why people wear so strange and uncomfortable armor. I can't realise why this film has so bad review from critics. Why many of them criticize the film for the fact that it is not like "The Lord of Rings"? Don't listen them, just watch this movie and enjoy it! LOK'TAR OGAR!!!!!!! Expand

While the scenery, music, effects and some of the acting are amazing I feel that the holes and disappointment comes from the story and some portrayals of the characters. For examples, Anduin Lothar (portrayed by Travis Fimmel) is a much older and he has no children. Khadgar was sent by the Kirin Tor to spy on Medivh and wasn't just a random encounter and the assassination of Llane did not go down like that. I could go on for much longer but I won't because I feel to some extent that fans of the franchise that loves this movie should read up a little more on the history of WarCraft and it's characters. I am, however, well aware that some of things I point out are minor but there are major things as well. It's a pity because this movie could've been a hundred times better.

But again, one must compliment the scenery that really gives Azeroth life, the music that sets the mood perfectly and the stunning effects that makes the Orcs come alive and even though a lot of the characters were faulty the acting that was put in was terrific. If one should see this as a non-canon movie it's a good flick.

But I can't see this as a non-canon and I fear for the future should a sequel be approved even though it looks bleak.

On the positive note, there are plenty of eye candy to behold, however "Warcraft" has some serious pacing issues, as it tries to condense an entire video game's backstory into a 2-hour movie.

I think I was tired that day or sleepyTL;DR - Honestly I fell asleep the first time I saw this movie on the Big Screen in 2016, this rarely happens hence I never considered rewatching the movie dismissing it as 'so boring that I dozed off'. I think I was tired that day or sleepy because I was wrong, I may have also gone in with an expectation of an Action Spectacle.
Rewatching the movie at home paying attention to the plot and not expecting to see some amazing action sequences I really have a newfound love for this film, so much that it almost made we want to get back into the 'WOW' games that I quit after finishing Wrath of the Lich King more than 6 years ago.

The Good
The CGI was really good for about 95 percent of the movie, some shots look dated now in 2020 but most of it holds up pretty well. We live in an age where movies with heavy VFX start looking bad as soon as you see them at your home after a theater watch. Four plus years later this movie is still pretty watchable which shows passion from Art Direction and VFX teams. The Music was amazing for the film, every track and piece of background music added to the immersion and has very accurately replicated the feeling of the games.

The story is also pretty good, quite straightforward nothing too deep but executed well enough. The pacing was decent with Travis Fimmel really putting his all into the role, Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga have good chemistry on Preacher but sadly they did not spend any time together in the film. Ben as Khadgar and Ben as Medivh turn in interesting performances, a little uneven at times but mostly works well.

The detailing in all the Horde and Alliance parts of the Visual Storytelling were extremely satisfying to experience in movie form. The Gryphons, Azeroth, the Murlock going 'mrglwglwlg', the Orc Watchtowers, the Dwarf Guns and much more made the Warcraft Nerd in me watch in awe at how good they were.

The Bad
Even though the CGI was amazing I felt all the actors playing the Orcs were lost under the cgi, unlike now where we can still see Mark Ruffalo under all the Hulk CGI. There were some big names, one being Clancy Brown who even after a rewatch I could not figure out who he was playing. I feel any big names on the orc side are wasted and should instead cast lesser known but good actors thereby saving budget on getting and wasting mainstream actors.
Paula Patton was alright considering the role but she felt a little uninteresting as I know she can act, it just felt she was not really into it.
The story although not bad, stays a little bland and goes as expected, maybe hiring a good screenwriter should be more of a focus over big names for the cast if they were to do a sequel as recent rumors have stated.

Warcraft 2016 is a good watch if you are not really into the games, from a Visual standpoint and a Story standpoint the movie delivers a good experience as an entry into the universe.
The the fans, which clearly from the high Metacritic user score confirms I was incorrectly judging the movie for a while now; tell me that it was a satisfying movie and hopefully the rumors of a sequel become reality soon.
