It is a good movie and for someone who played a bit of World of Warcraft and no other WARCRAFT games I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, Acting is Brilliant, CGI is ok not the best but not the worst by a long shot.

If you have any interest in Warcraft games or Fantasy, please watch it.

Blizzard if you're reading this for some reason, please make a sequel, give it a second chance.

If there's something you have to ignore, it's definitely not this movie, but rather the Critic's Metacritic score, the column on the left and most of the critic reviews.
The latter somewhat affects the viewers' subconscious;
"Oh, it's your typical human warrior character. Can't they think of something interesting?"
"Hmm, they did go for it and gave those barbaric-looking creatures a contrasting side in their personality - such as cheesy idea."
"Meh, they're tried hard to make that character relatable, it's disgusting. He/She now annoys me every time he/she is onscreen."
"The 3D sceneries look too beautiful making it look fake!"
"Blah blah blah."

I'm not saying this movie has lots of cliches. It's just that that kind of critic mindset makes an idea annoying for a viewers' mind when it could've been welcoming prior to finding out about the critics' opinions. Making movie goers look for something that isn't what the movie is giving them.
I mean, why can't something in movies be what it is instead of something that hasn't been done before?

My parents watched it with us, knowing nothing about the game. And when the film was finished, we all had smiles in our faces because of how surprisingly enjoyable the movie was. The pacing was fast enough and the events that unfold are intriguing. It's probably the only movie so far that gave me a reason to temporarily avert my attention to something else.

We all eagerly wait for the sequel!

My only gripes about the film is that there are stuff I wished that lasted longer/carried over to the next film and it's disappointing that it won't be so. There was a cringe-y moment for me but thankfully, it was forgettable.

Oh, and also avoid those "Warcraft fans" that has a very different definition of "loose adaptation" in mind, complaining why the lore barely resembles that in the game, etc.

To cut things short, this movie is highly entertaining and is worth your money ask your friends and family to give it a go!

Blizzard from the start was adamant that the movie remain true to their vision and lore, and as such they made a movie that should please even the most hardcore nerds, which is a truly epic accomplishment. Could they have cut out or altered significant parts of the lore to "speed things along" and make a better movie going experience, absolutely and I'm sure it would have received a slightly better critical review. However, nearly all video game movies get poor critical reviews as the common thinking is Comic movies - good, video game movies - bad. All that said, this movie does an excellent job of staying true to the original story (kind of a mix of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans with touches of Warcraft 3). Staying true to lore, pleasing fans, pleasing blizzard and making a movie that's watchable to non-fans is an incredibly difficult line to walk, and Duncan Jones made it happen. I look forward to seeing him take on the next one, which, with all the setup out of the way, should be significantly more fun to watch.

Additionally, and somewhat unrelated, I think the movie not being marketed as "The Beginning" in the US was a mistake. If you watch the movie as a stand-alone representation of Warcraft, you are going to think "Warcraft looks really really silly and doesn't make sense." But if you understand that this is a preamble to a significantly more interesting story (Warcraft 2 and the Lich King Saga) then you can see the awesome potential the series has.

TL;DR: Fans will get it, non-fans will struggle, the next one is going to be better.

Though the film is guilty of sometimes leaving the lore-novice dumbfounded the writers had definitely made a great effort to have them still enjoy the movie without being too confused.

The CG on this movie is excellent and it was a great pleasure to watch the panoramic views, the orcs and the magic. The only part that I personally dislike is how they portray the night elves. Also the acting of the human characters sometimes felt weak during several of the scenes and they should've done a retake.

Hopefully blizzard will continue making sequels because this movie is definitely only an introduction to a world of intriguing stories: Day of the Dragon, War of the Ancients, Rise of the Lich King and the rest of it!

The critics are completely wrong on this one. I hope they make a sequel!

The fact that most of the orcs are actually more expressive and naturally acting than the humans speaks volumes about the quality of the CGI involved, as well as the mediocrity of many of the actors. Fortunately, Fimmel does a good effort as Lothar and somewhat saves the day for the Alliance side. Most of his missteps are due to the script I think, rather than his actual performance. The battles are quite well done and the overall pacing of the film works, despite its duration. What was rather disappointing was the music: it uses very little from the outstanding soundtrack of the Warcraft series, without replacing it with anything remotely memorable. Personally, I think that a metascore of 32 is grossly unfair for this movie. It is certainly a far cry from LotR, but it is still a decent attempt and quite entertaining, even for non-fans of Warcraft. Expand

Ok, first and foremost, I will begin this review by saying that I am not, and never have been a Warcraft player of any sort; meaning, I have not touched the online game, board game, card game or any Warcraft product since its inception. So,Ok, first and foremost, I will begin this review by saying that I am not, and never have been a Warcraft player of any sort; meaning, I have not touched the online game, board game, card game or any Warcraft product since its inception. So, going into Duncan Jones’ third directorial feature film Warcraft, I was a complete outsider amongst an army of loyal and very aware Warcraft users. Unlike most built-in audiences, each and every person who was in attendance of the early screening, possessed none of the typical geeky, fan-boy characteristics I have come to expect from franchises such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings film franchises. So, how did I feel finally being an outsider and what exactly did the audience I attended the screening looked like?

The thing with the Warcraft universe is that everyone at some point tried it and you would never know who is a Warcraft fiend. Young, old, men, women, Warcraft is the type of obsession that could be just about for anyone. So, while I am somewhat aware of the massive universe Duncan Jones was responsible for brining to life on the big screen, I had no idea how expansive and detailed this world really is.

Upon the opening frames, seeing humans battle off against Orcs, and beginning much of the story in a fantastical world of Azeroth, I was one of few audiences members who was just along for the ride, and not for the love of the universe, but for the love of cinema. Having been late to the party with Lord of the Rings (truth of the matter is, I have never seen any of them nor have any interest to), one of the biggest complaints with many of my friends now with Middle Earth is, thanks to the massive success of HBO’s Game of Thrones, violence, sex and exponential gore is what audiences want with fantasy films. The action solely isn’t enough anymore. And while Daenerys Targaryen actress Emilia Clarke’s newest film Me Before You, a romantic drama was playing in the cinema beside mine, I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that, fantasy doesn’t always sell anymore; but sex surely does. As I can assure you, I may have never seen an episode of Game of Thrones, but you can sure as heck bet I have seen pictures on the interest of Clarke’s bodacious naked bod.

With Warcraft, the premise is simple. Orcs, lead by a sadistic leader who possesses the fel, Gul’Dan (Daniel Wu), sucks the life out of other world’s inhabitants and uses their energy to open up a portal to a new world, inhabited by human, called Azeroth. To the dismay of Durotan (Toby Kimmell) an his pregnant wife Draka (Anna Galvin), they follow along with Gul’Dan’s plans only in hope of finding a peaceful life in the new world. Once through the portal, Gul’Dan wages war against the humans who inhabit that kingdom, putting him in a direct collision course with King of Stromwind Llane Wrynn (Dominic Cooper), and as well as his trusty and noble military commander Sir Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel). A fierce warrior and destructive orc killer, Anduin finds himself partnered with the fumbling Khadgar (Ben Schnetzer), a young and inexperienced warlock whose powers have yet to be contained. Advised by the council due to the recent threat of the orcs, Anduin and Khadgar head to Karazhan to summon the Guradian Medivh (Ben Foster) and use his wisdom and powers to help defeat the army of orcs and Gul’Dan once and for all.

Fantasy isn’t my preferred genre of cinema to watch. Being able to capture these films on the big screen is something wonderful though, especially amongst all its loyal and faithful fans. While the world of the Warcraft universe is highly new and almost unheard of to me, I can honestly say that I was very intimidated by its great reach and length, along with its history. After all, the first ever sighting of the Warcraft real-time strategy game came in 1994, when I was only a child. Imagine how much the world has grown since then? Like anything fanatical and with such a rich history, the more you know, the better. Was I a fan of the film as a whole by the time I left the theatre? Maybe not the biggest, but, does that suggest it was a bad film overall?

I believe that audience members, especially ones for this fantastical, built-in audience, is important to consider, especially given the universe’s endless possibilities. But, what is the difference between a built in universe such as Warcraft, or, say, the cinematic universe of Marvel or DC? Comic book characters that have been around decades and whose worlds mix, blend and cross-over to other universes regularly? Nothing really. So with that said, as a whole, was Warcraft an amazing fantasy experience? Absolutely not. At times, the film suffers from straining and overwhelming special effects, especially during its action sequences, its action is brute and forceful, giving audiences a bit of a spectacle overload. Where does the film succeed most? In its glory and beauty of showing off the orcs by the firefight.

It feels like a film made for Warcraft fans to enjoy and not the greatest movie to walk into knowing nothing. People who may not know the lore behind the Warcraft series may not get the same story experience as a fan but they will still be able to enjoy the surprisingly intense action scenes and beautiful CGI. As a fan myself I found I was nerding out every other second about some little detail in the background or environment, those things is what made the movie for me. Seeing them travel through Stormwind/Ironfordge and other places gave me that feeling of "Hey, I've been there before. I know this place." But it's exact reasons like that why I think this movie is focused on Warcraft fans and not new goers to the franchise. Overall the Story wasn't the greatest thing but it is part of the Warcraft story that needs to be told to set up for future movies if they plan on it. CGI was amazing and I found myself speechless multiple times from Orcs and Humans fighting. True fans will spot plot holes as well witch is sad to see in a movie of this level. All in all if your a Warcraft fan go watch this movie and nerd out but for anyone else, Wait and watch it in the comfort of your own home. Expand

ThisRegarding visual presentation: This film is worth watching solely on the strength of its visual effects. The motion capture for the orcs is amazing, and the magic effects are the best representation I've seen on screen in any film, ever. This is also one of the first films I've seen since Avatar where the 3D conversion actually added something to the presentation, rather than detracting.

Regarding the plot: Do you remember when Inception came out, and many critics reported that it was a confusing movie that required multiple viewings to make sense of it? And then do you remember watching it, and thinking those critics were out to lunch? The same is true of Warcraft. Coming into the film as a non-fan, the film has a pretty straightforward plot, and anything that's left unexplained isn't really necessary for understanding that plot. You'd have to be pretty dim to not be able to figure out what's going on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An Orc party leave their dying world through a portal to Azeroth. Soon the leader of the humans and the leader of the orcs find themselves a collision course that will decide the fate of both their people.

There is a honesty and truthfulness that comes with a Duncan Jones film, from having a famous father (a true legend) Jones broke convention not becoming one of those superficial celebs making a living in the shadow of a parent. I know very little if any thing about Warcraft, I know it's big and I know it's a fantasy role playing game so I'm not going to pretend I know more than that.

Warcraft with all the whizz bang jiggery pokery, beneath the sweeping shots and special effects there is a heart felt tale about parenting and loss. What Jones' offering has is that Moon, Source Code humanity which Jones effortlessly brings to the table, that roundness and grounded feel that he stamps on his films. The script has an honesty that it's not just some money making studio movie but an indie-spirited film finely crafted on a large scale. You feel your mate made this great spectacle, there's an underlying apprehensive innocence in contrast to a sense of wonder and adventure. Warcraft seemingly feels that he isn't in it for the money, but for the story telling and artistic craft of it all.

Unusually the subtitle 'The Beginning' was absent on the title screen in the cinema version, it simply says 'Warcraft' possibly linked to the rating. While available for all to see with an adult, the battles are intense, stabbings etc. it not just the scary demon and skeletal faces that will scare the young kids but the emotional impact of orc Durotan (CGI capture Tony Kebbell) wife and child storyline. As Orc clan honour is tested, there are duelling wizards, a giant golem and griffin. Jones also briefly throws in a few elves, dwarfs and huge wolves for good measure. There's betrayal, double-crossing and retribution, the powerful magical Orc, Gul'dan (the excellent Daniel Wu) literary sucks the life of humans akin to The Dark Crystal.

The casting is not mainstream, Ben Foster's wizard Medivh avoids stereotype and is a young incarnation of a wizard, as is Llane (Dominic Cooper) a younger than expected King. Battle hard human Lothar Travis Fimmel (of Amazon's Vikings) as well as some grand action scenes, emotional set ups (one echoing the Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan showdown) he also gets comedic moments, many alongside wizard/mage apprentice Khadgar (Ben Schnetzer) who again is not what you'd expect for someone so powerful. This casting works in Warcraft's favour, if you had a thing for blue women Smurfette, Neytiri and Mystique, Stark Trek olive and She-Hulk green is the new in colour with Garona Halforcen. Fittingly cast is memorable underrated Clancy Brown (of Highlander fame) as the principled conflicted Blackhand, Gul'dan's right-hand orc.

The daytime colour is bright and vivid in contrast to the pin sharp night time and darker scenes, Warcraft has a unique look and feel. The execution is near on perfect in the confines of the budget and today's capabilities with brutal sword play and battles. The director is wise to keep the focus on the interesting characters and themes of conflict, family and loyalty with Ramin Djawadi ominous score adding to the proceedings. Warriors, Kings, magicians and creatures, the human cast and the CGI performers melt together and you invest in the characters and their secret meetings and campsite confessions. The computer imagery, textured layers of animation and 3D modeling fuse with the mix of practical stunts and sets. Fimmel and Kebbell are notable but Paula Patton as hardened Garona steals the show as a go between peace keeper and will no doubt set geek hearts aflame. Writers Jones, Charles Leavitt and Chris Metzen juggle the many major characters successfully and the cast deliver the fantasy dialogue with ease.

Jones and crew give us the Matrix of fantasy, lots of things will be familiar not just reminiscent because of Lord of the Rings, Dungeon and Dragons, Fire and Ice, Planet of the Apes, John Carter to name a few. But because of an inherent subconscious of the genre that's in the ether and part of our pop culture. But like the stylised Matrix did for sci-fi (as much as I hate to admit it) after the dust settled it stood on its own feet and was a milestone in film. As a 70'd kid Warcraft for me puts magic back in the mix instead of it languishing in low budget TV shows, a soulless blockbusters or sub-par cash-ins, here Jones takes it to a fitting level where it should be and cleverly sets up a follow up.

There's unavoidable rooted fantasy tropes littered throughout and Jones injects a little nuance or twist wherever possible. As a sci-fi fantasy, medieval-ish action saga Warcraft is highly recommend.

But a friend, one always for fantasy films, expressed an interest, and pointed out that audience reception was quite positive. So I decided, what the hell.

I was pleasantly surprised. The film is a treat both for players of Warcraft series and for followers of it's lore: This is a retelling of the events of the very first Warcraft game, spiced up with new elements taken from Warcraft 3 and WoW. I recognized almost every character by name and reputation if not by their face, and was able to keep my friend appraised of such. I doubt most of the critics went into this film with the foreknowledge I did, and their reviews smack of such.

The movie delivers on what it promises - orcs feel lifelike and truly become relatable characters, magic is plentiful and portrayed in an interesting way and the world looks beautiful with stunning sceneries. Movie's director Duncan Jones has managed to perfectly captured the essence of Warcraft, taking all that makes the renowned video game so great and adapting it to a format suitable for big screen. Even humor is there and it's not over the top.

In its core Warcraft is a character driven movie. While on the bigger scale the movie is about conflict between forces of good and evil each character has their own motivations and personal struggles. During the movie it becomes evident that lines are not as clear cut as it seems at first glance. It's a great story of conflict and tragedy.

The plot is made easier to understand for those unfamiliar with source material. The movie tells you most of the things you need to know while subtly hinting there's more to that and old fans can pick up those familiar clues. Attention to detail is just uncanny - there are probably hundreds of Easter eggs woven into the movie but none of them are distractive for the uninitiated.

The story is amongst some of the most faithful ones to source material ever seen on the big screen. There are changes but none are so major as to change the overall story, some are purely cosmetic and none are really out of character. Most of them really do work to make the story more fluid.

With all that said the movie is not perfect though. The movie's final cut is a bit too short for a fantasy epic of this scale. It shows in some places where the pacing suddenly seems off and it feels that too much was left out. Hopefully they will release an extended version later on Blu-ray.

Overall it's a great movie that does a good job with setting up the Warcraft universe on big screen and leaves you wanting for more. A delight for any true fantasy lover.

Still movie was pretty well done, with great characters... awesome CGI etc. Ok you could find some poor plot moments but overall I greatly enjoyed the movie and would still recommend it 100% to all Warcraft fans.
Don't forget Blizzard is planning to release sequels which advance the story, so for an opening movie it was great. I really hope Blizzard keeps true to the roots and won't turn this into mainstream **** just to appease to the public.

A ver, la pelΓcula yo me la tomo como un spin-off, se inventa algunas cosas y no respeta totalmente el lore original del juego, pero, hombre, se le puede conceder y tal. Es hasta recomendable.

Don't believe the critics on this one, they really don't seem to have any idea what they're talking about.

Appearance:

Somehow Bliz got the right balance of practical props and CG to make everything looking believable, but on top of that the sound and choreography is on POINT. Slightly smaller and only marginally less pissed off than the hulk, Fel Orcs absolutely crush the poor human bastards in ways that just can't really be expressed with practical choreography.
Emotions and expressions are "accurate", movement is natural. Orcs really come alive.

Beautiful vistas of game locations re-imagined are briefly visited (Stormwind a few times) but always a treat.

The only complaint is that Garona looks only slightly too human. If you're a lore buff, she was considered half human up until later down the line (Burning crusade) and depictions in warcraft do have her looking pretty much like a green-skinned woman. But in some scenes she did end up looking like a slightly tall woman with an odd skin complexion.

Sound:

The resounding impact of a hammer constructed of a rod the thickness of your arm with a stone the size of an infant into an unfortunate guardsman's chest isn't gruesome and certainly not weak but oddly satisfying to have what you hear match up with what you see.
That said, most battles are pretty one sided aside from our plot armored heroes, but frankly it makes good sense.

Music is vaguely warcraft-ish. I certainly can't recall anything I would listen to regularly like some of the lord of the rings or max max fury road soundtracks. But it seems to be a nice compliment.

Plot and writing:

There are a few moments of levity sprinkled throughout though likewise there's nothing too hammy and only one particularly awkward moment or two I can recall. A couple moments worth a laugh though I wonder how much people who aren't fans of the series might enjoy them.

The heroes enjoy a pretty significant degree of plot armor for the most part, effortlessly slaying massive brutes who are effortlessly slaying their fellows. At least for the mages it makes sense.
Things turn around a little bit later and the battle becomes a little more balanced, which does make things a bit more believable. After all, the humans have never dealt with more or less green viking gorrilas from outer space. They adapt and improve at the very end, which leads well into a presumable sequel for warcraft II.

There are a few deviations from the lore, but nothing too grievous. After all, warcraft was an RTS first before anything else. We've had layers upon layers of story added on in recent years, but it's become pretty cluttered. A little retcon wouldn't hurt.

My only complaint was that the pacing seemed a bit off. Lots of travel to show off beautiful vistas or recreations of ingame locations followed by some exposition followed by another vista, followed by exposition, etc. Some places we hardly got to enjoy for a few minutes (ironforge) while others we only got a glimpse at (Redridge mountains) and then others still got several visits (Stormwind, Medivh's tower)

OVERALL:

I highly recommend seeing this movie if you are a warcraft or WoW fan. Even if you aren't, its a pretty solid fantasy flick. Probably nothing too particularly memorable, but it is one of the better videogame to movie adaptations.

It felt like it sometimes it would cut to random shots for 10 seconds for no reasons, and then cut back, and it didn't show important scenes as much as it should have. The whole movie was very well done and easy to follow even if your not a warcraft fan. I went with a buddy who knows nothing about the game and he really enjoyed it. In my opinion this is a must see in theaters. I'm so glad I didn't wait for it to come out on video. The only thing I do agree with the critics on is the lack of story on the character part but then the movie would of easily been 3 hours or more long and in all actuality its really not needed. The story of the movie alone will keep you captivated along with the great fight scenes. Expand

Anyway, this film captures the amazing story of Warcraft universe on the good level. CGI are realistic enough (and often beautiful), but it has truly bad moments. However, I can see the great technology and skills that have been used in this production. Some scenes also could be executed much better. Anyway, the story was clear and really fun even for friends that never had tangency with Warcraft universe. Quite a good start of the trilogy, but I hope that continuations will be better!

This movie suffers from a lack of objectivity on the side of many critics. Even worst movies do not deserve score like 0, were they really watching this film or not? And there is no point comparing Warcraft to other movies like LotR, saying that this film is aiming at it or posting reviews without good research. Not liking this genre? Simply don't watch it. This movie is not bad in my opinion - I simply enjoyed it.

CGI and Scenery 9/10 - CGI has it bad moments, but I can see great technologies and skills used in this production.
Sound/Music 8/10 - Music and sound are great! I really enjoyed Dolby Atmos technology in my local cinema.
Story (Overall) 9/10 - This is Warcraft Universe. Story and lore are just amazing - it offers so much to explore! Sadly I give 6/10 for the scenario of this film, It could be done a bit better.
Acting 8/10 - Good acting. I can't agree with some people that are saying that Medivh's actor was bad in this movie . Remember who Medivh is? The lonely guardian that was corrupted by demon magic (he is really serious).

I highly recommend ignoring most critics reviews, especially these with a pretty low score.

Disclaimer: I've played WoW on and off for over 10 years.

That said, I went into this movie with low expectations and came out with a silly smile on my face and a desperate hope they make a sequel(s).

First point: The CGI was amazing. From the magical effects, to the Orcs, creatures and landscapes, this was superbly done. It looked like the new standard for CGI.

Second Point: The acting. It was solid when it mattered, but fell a bit flat in other areas that made the film feel more like a B movie than a blockbuster hit. Overall, though, I felt that Anduin Lothar, Medivh, Garona and each of the actors who played major roles as orcs were phenomenal.

Last Point: The story. While it deviated from the lore a good bit, I enjoyed how they brought everything together and didn't stick to any tropes of good overcoming evil. Warcraft is well known for its history of painting orcs as more than just savage beasts and antagonists, but instead showing they have a good side, an honest side, and a deep value of honor - all of which were very well conveyed through this film.

Wrap Up: It's not going to win any Oscars, but if you are a fan of Warcraft, and even if you are just a fan of fantasy, this film will more than likely be well worth your dime and I highly suggest it's a well-made investment.

Please note, my comments on this movie may or may not be influenced by the fact that I've played and enjoyed World Of Warcraft in the past.

It takes a lot to appeal to a movie critic these days. Most of the popular ones are desperate to make some kind of impression and as a result cannot find it within themselves to be objective. Let's be clear, this film is no Oscar nominee, nor is it going to be a fantasy box office smash like Lord of the Rings, but that doesn't make it a bad movie.

I went to see this movie with much trepidation. As stated, I have been a fan of the game during some of it's best periods and this movie has been a long time coming. Many of the critics who have seen this movie panned it, I don't know what they were expecting, but clearly it didn't hit the spot with them. It did hit the spot with me. It was great to see people like Medivh, Gul'dan, Doomhammer and Durotan on screen. I've read about Warcraft lore for many years and Duncan Jones and his team did a great job of bringing it all to life.

Anyone who has read the lore knows what to expect in terms of story (albeit with a few alterations), it's a relatively simplistic tale, but I genuinely think they pulled it off. The orcs were well done and looked relatively convincing (though they were bigger in size than most would expect) and actually the least convincing role was that of Dominic Cooper who played King Llane Wrynn. Not one of his best pieces of work in my opinion.

Go and see this movie if you are a fan of Warcraft or a fan of the fantasy genre in general. Watch it and make your own mind up, the critics got this one wrong in my opinion, and judging by the positive audience scores, many others agree. Don't expect too much, but it's certainly much better than the 'pro critics' want you to believe.

If you are a fan of Warcraft, be it the online game, the strategy game, or if you are just a fan of fantasy in general. Orcs, elves, magic and all that great stuff. You will find enjoyment in this movie.

And while the movie could have given some characters more development and it stumbles with pacing during the first 30 minutes of the movie, which is not really odd as they apparently cut about 40 minutes of footage for the theatrical release. The movie does so many things right.

The action is amazing, as it blends the two races of Orcs and Humans against each other in very interesting ways. The orcs fight almost naked with just brute strength and brutality, while the Humans clad in awesome looking armor, fight with more agility and finesse. Mix in some truly great looking magic into the battles, and you get some really entertaining action sequences.

The characters was mostly good and interesting, with a few stand out characters, pretty mcuh everyone on the Orc side of things. Toby Kebbell as Durotan, Anna Galvin as Draka, Robert Kazinsky as Orgrim, Clancy Brown as Blackhand and Daniel Wu as Gul'dan was just brilliantly cast and their actors deserves commendations as they played their parts so well. And the CGI animations for the orcs was just spectacular, one of the first shots in this movie just looks completely real to me. Probably the best motion capture CGI I have ever seen so far, oscar worthy special effects for sure.

The characters on the human side could have used some much needed character development though, but they did their roles well enough and I thought the acting was good for all of them. But they did not stand out as much as the actors playing the Orcs did, besides perhaps Ben Foster as Medivh, he was fairly good and I feel they developed his character more than the others.

The music score is really great with a theme that is going to stick with me for some time. It really fits in with Warcraft and they even put in some snippets of music from the games here and there which is very nostalgic. The small easter eggs was also very welcomed as a fan. The visuals itself are so on point in this movie, with such vibrant and colorful shots that just screams pure fantasy and more importantly, it just looks like Warcraft.

I got to see real versions of locations I have visited in the games that the movie is based on. And that made me have a sense of presence in a movie that I have not really had before. It was like walking into my first Horde barracks back when World of Warcraft opened its doors for the first time, being able to see how it actually looked like inside the buildings I created when I played the old strategy games. And now I got to see how some of these things would look like almost completely real.

So yes, I greatly enjoyed this movie. A solid 8/10 for me. If they release that extended edition I have heard about, it might fix my biggest issues with the movie and bring it up to a 9/10 or even a 10/10. I am very biased and I don't deny it. But this movie was made for me and the fans of Warcraft. This movie is a love letter to fans by fans.

For the Horde! 7/10

5.5+ 1.5 stars for the orcs. I'll get to why in a moment.

The costumes, scenery, designs and effects are incredible. The orcs are amazing and I didn't see any generics. Every member of the horde had their dress, bones of animals and unique weapons. They were brutish, fearsome and massive. The combat really gave the impression that a single orc was worth five human soldiers.

Unfortunately the dialogue is pretty atrocious. I understand where comments about bad acting come from, but I don't think it was the actors so much as the script. During moments of tension dialogue is spoken as if there is not a battle raging around the characters.

Example:
During a battle do you say "Sara, come ride the horse with me" or "Sara!, with me!" ?

Unfortunately the writers chose the former. Non-combat scenes are a little verbose. There is an art to meaningful small talk that I don't think the writers have the hang of yet. At times it feels like the characters are afraid to use anything but textbook proper English.

The translation may throw some people off once in a while. When an orc speaks he speaks English and humans in the background speak a strange tongue. When humans speak it is in English and the orcs in the background speak a strange tongue. This is done in the middle of a few scenes. In the two seconds it took to realize what they had done I realized I liked it a lot for movies with fictional languages.

The movie showcases many different locations, cramming a lot of fan service in. While I haven't played vanilla in many years yet the locations are recognizable. That is very cool. It shows how iconic the realms of Azeroth stand in the minds of fans. Unfortunately, a flat dialogue that doesn't ratchet up tension coupled with scenery you want the film to spend time in just makes everything start to feel rushed.

The Orcs. 1.5 stars. The detail on the orcs was stunning. The facial expressions and the movement was stunning. Warcraft is Orcs vs. Humans. Humans are done. People exist. To breathe life into the orcs was the hard part and they did it with smashing success. The drama and dialogue for the orcs was much stronger and felt closer to real life than the alliance.

This was a great foray into the lore of Warcraft that started it all long before the MMO. If the future movies are more story focused and better scripted I will definitely be buying tickets in the future.

Im not a fan of Warcraft or WOW but found this entertaining.
I understand the work and complexity that goes into a games story, and was amazed that i enjoyed it without being too overwhelmed by the deep lore.
So besides it possibly being a little overwhelming for some, It still was a fun movie, with great special effects and acting was fine.
The story grabbed me for the most part, without me needing to know more about the MMO or WC in general

And for a movie adaptation of a video game, that alone is an achievement. The most enjoyable parts of the movie are the scenery, combat, and the sense of world building as if this movie is a stepping stone for something much bigger. Durotan and Khadgar are both enjoyable characters. The downsides include Lothar and Llane's unenthusiastic acting, the somewhat forced romance, and a certain "death scene" that should be emotional, but doesn't really hit the right notes. Also, the movie could afford to be a little longer to fill in some important details, like the Orc's history before Gul'dan's corruption, as well as explaining who the Draenei are (the blue people sacrificed early in the movie). Overall, still enjoyable and worth watching from an outsider's perspective. If you're a Warcraft or Blizzard fan, I doubt you'll need any other reason to watch it. Expand

Warcraft is a marvelous mixture of neat CGI effects (taking into account other videogame-related movies and the fact 99% of the movie is computer-made), a gripping story and comely humor, and while it may not appeal to the crowd that is unfamiliar with the series, it's like living history to those who know it, love it, and play it. A game for gamers, not for your average Joe that goes to the mall with his family to have dinner at McDonald's and goes "hey, boss gave me a raise this month, why not go the movie after dinner?!"

When I saw the critic reviews, I knew it wasn't going to be great. Yeah, critics can be harsh, but come on, most are rating it 30% or below across many different websites, so obviously something is wrong with the film.

What's wrong with it? Well the director himself made the film through rose-tinted glasses because he's a fan of the game. Is that...wrong? No, someone loving something and making a film about it only for an audience who loves the same thing is perfectly acceptable. Duncan Jones made a film for himself and other warcraft fans; overall it delivered.

5/10 - I can say without a doubt that if you are a fan of the game, and have upvoted those youtube comments on youtube xpack cinematics saying that Blizzard "just needs to make a movie already" then you'll be happy you saw it. So the movie already deserves 5 points.

6/10 - The CGI is up to standard and sometimes even surpasses it, although it isn't perfect (Golem looked terrible). Great CGI is pretty common these days, meeting technical standards is not as difficult as before, so I say good CGI is worth 1 point.

7/10 - There are some truly emotional and moving moments. I'll say this, most of the movie is pure cringe. There is a lot of stupid stuff, unfortunately...but there are a few scenes that really impressed me. I can't really talk about them because I don't want to ruin them for you, but I came close to tears during one of the 1v1 fight scenes near the end of the movie. The fact that we get some raw emotion on-top of good CGI is icing on the cake

Those are the only good points. There is more bad then good, even as a warcraft addict I can sympathize with the critics.

-1 point : A lot of cringe moments. For people who live on the internet, cringing comes quite easy, in fact I find myself almost cringing at anything these days, so maybe it will be different for you. To describe it better there are a lot of scenes which try to make you feel but fail to do so because the lack of authenticity and poor dialogue, which brings me to the next negative...

-1 point: The script is below average. There was maybe one or two lines that resonated or had emotional value, the rest of what was said by the characters was uninspired and unconvincing. Just a poor script.

-1 point: You see this point everywhere, and that's because it's true. Scene's transition much too often (pacing issues). This is a consequence of trying to tell a long story in just one movie. As a huge warcraft fan, I had no trouble following the story, but I can imagine newcomers would. Again, it is a just a fan film with a huge budget so it does not cater to new audiences, and to be honest it shouldn't have to.

A warcraft film for warcraft players. It's what we wanted, it could be better 7/10

I had low expectations from this movie coming in but it surprised me in a lot of ways. I view this as test movie for blizzard to see if there is a market and I think there is. I think the movie delivered a good story. Was beautifully with good computer effects. They blended in and it really worked well in the movie.

The acting was okay. I'd say they differed in the performance but some where better and others worse but all in all they did the job.

The more I think about the movie the more I liked it. It was a bit fast paced but it was expected and I think coming movies will become even better. It was a good watch and I think 7 is a fair grading considering the special effects, acting, story and how pleased I felt after the movie.

There is room for improvement but this was not bad watch at all

Warcraft: The Beginning is by no means a perfect movie. Most of its characters are one-dimensional and there is nothing complex or new about the plot.

However, Warcraft is in my mind easily the best movie adaptation of a game so far. It is a gift to the millions of players who have played the games and a good introduction to those who were not familiar with the rich world of Warcraft.

The purpose of this movie is in the title: to build the foundation for a movie franchise based on one of the most detailed and rich fictional worlds ever created. I am happy to inform you that it succeeds in doing this. I am excited to see where this takes us - as a fan of the games, I can assure you that there are far better stories to be told than this one. I am glad they started from the beginning.

It is based on the Warcraft video game series and novels set in the world of Azeroth. The film stars Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Robert Kazinsky and Daniel Wu. The film portrays the initial encounters between the humans and the orcs and takes place in a variety of locations established in the video game series. The film was first announced in 2006 as a project partnership between Legendary Pictures and the game's developer, Blizzard Entertainment.

-Warcraft will premiere in Los Angeles on June 6, 2016 and is set to be released by Universal Pictures in the United States on June 10, 2016. It has received negative reviews from critics and has grossed over $70 million.

--Filming:

-Principal photography began on January 13, 2014 and lasted for four months, finishing on May 23, 2014. Filming took place primarily in Vancouver among other locations. Post-production lasted twenty months. Regarding the use of computer-generated imagery, Jones said, "It's a tool like any other. It can be done well and it can be done **** The best CGI has you forgetting (that) it's CGI, and accepting the visual as whatever it is supposed to beβ€”like props. No one has an issue with props in film, do they?"

--Production:

-Development:

-Duncan Jones also faced personal struggles during filming as his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer soon after Jones took over, furthermore his father, David Bowie, also died from cancer late in production. Jones thus summed up the challenge by telling The New York Times. "My film started and ended with cancer".

--Critical response:

-Warcraft has received negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 19%, based on 42 reviews, with an average rating of 4.2/10. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 31 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews."

-Dave Robinson of Crash Landed meanwhile praised the films depiction of the Orc race and the motion capture performances portrayed by the actors.

Like every movie out there, this one has flaws and it is not perfect at all. It has to be said, though, the movie is the best videogame adaptation out there BY FAR.

To be completely honest, everything is the film is really good, Garona is truly an amazing deep character. If I have to point out the main flaw of this movie is that it is probably a bit too fast paced, especially for the non Warcraft fans since they have to learn every character's names and that is quite a challenge. Still, the movie is both outstanding either if you're a fan or not. That is for sure.

All of my expectations were met or exceeded and the movie and characters were spectacular. I came out of the theater absolutely thrilled. I Don't usually give films 10/10 but this did not leave me wanting for anything at all. There was some modifications of how events happened from game cannon but each major plot point was attained as in cannon despite the method of that delivery often being abbreviated as films must often do. Critic reviews seem really harsh. A lot of them compare it to other fantasy films or the bible and criticize its set up for a sequel but at the same time they seem mostly ignorant that this is a movie version of a high fantasy game whose story continues for several more games. It's meant to be tragic and full of fantastic visuals. Its FANTASY after all and I think it succeeded marvelously to that end. Seeing this film in 3D is a must. Expand

It's a film by fans for fans and it proudly displays this. If you are not familiar with the Warcraft games do not expect to understand this movie or be able to follow along with everything. This movie will throw places and names at you expecting you to already be at least superficially familiar with the characters and geography of the warcraft world.
It has problems for sure. Some of the lines are silly and could have used a rewrite and there is also a romance that seems very shoehorned and unnecessary but this is still a very fun and enjoyable movie that is pretty much everything that fans have been waiting for, for a long time. I am hopeful that the great reception from fans will allow sequels to be made that will cover the second and third games as well.

Effects were good enough, I still think Warcraft would be better as a full animation Blizz-style, but I guess it could be worse. Overall I was expecting really bad movie (seeing reviews) and was shocked how good it was. Looking forward to Beyond the Dark Portal story moment within next parts which will hopefully be created. I purposely didn't do my homework on the lore, but I could still follow the story. The characters were lovable, the action was fun, and for a film heavy on CGI it was beautiful to watch.

It is definitely worth the risk of a 15 dollar ticket price, you will have a lot of fun with this movie.

Self proclaimed "critics" downvote this movie just because it is based on a game and fantasy without LORD OF THE RINGS in the title. Go see this movie you will not be disappointed.

Probably some of the best visuals I've seen in some time. The orcs feel very real. There are a few story gaps but overall not as much as most critics seem to think. I went with two people who have never played the game and both rated it 8/10 plus.

Really enjoyed the movie immensely. Lots of fans service, good pacing, great action scenes. As other's said. this isn't the next LotR, but it never aspires to be neither. It succeeds perfectly at what it aims to be, a Blizzard-style polished piece of entertainment. Will definitely watch again! Expand

The CGI is amazing and in the past I have been put off with too much and found it distracting, but warcraft gets it right on so many levels it really does not feel over the top or spoil the movie.

The movie on a whole is a great starter in what I hope continues to be a continued franchise, it makes a massive refreshing break from the constant stream of superhero movies too which I have had enough of now.

The critics, any critic who scored this below 60/70 just show how out of touch they are with the paying public and have no real clue, they should never be allowed to review anything outside of raindance.

The critics who scored below a 40 should just be fired for posting clickbait in a attempt to get traffic to their websites, David Ehrlich should be cleaning the streets for a living and allowed no where near a cinema unless he is selling the popcorn behind the counter, his review is a disgrace and the guy should hold his head in shame!

I have not seen them get it so wrong since Marco Polo, another one they got so wrong!

Good summer flick and a welcome break from the many superhero movies that seem to be released weekly!
