This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
Las all die Geschichten, spielte jede Kampagne.
Also musste man Kompromisse eingehen.

Good begin of Warcraft story and good debut in that genre from Duncan Jones. I think he has already filled his hand. And in the next film he will lay oneself out much more

I think the critics are getting it wrong. The fans love it - Isn't that what a movie should be made for? It should be made not for critical acclaim but enjoyment. I really don't think the critics really get this movie.

I feel the only reason for the bad reviews is because its a video game/fantasy movie.

A solid movie set up for their first and let's hope the one covering WarCraft 2 years from now will be better. It retconned some things, changed a few key things, and as movies do.. showed things in different ways than the books and games but eh.

9/10 Expand

There are just too much things in less than 1 hour, I as an wow player and Lore lover (pretty inaccurate tbh) at the end of the film all my friend that haven't played bombarded me with questions that 4 the most part were obvious at least to me, they ended up not knowing who the real bad guys were (Gul´dan and Mediv AKA The Guardian). The movie should have been longer and many things replaced with explanations.

-In the spanish movie they say literally "Magia Fell" that doesent exist in spanish language and makes the caracters look stuoid, while in the game they translated the word to "Magia Vil" (evil). Just that change would have made the movie even better.

other concern that should have been explaned is why there are green and brwn orcs and how they became like that, none of my friends got it...

Let's get straight to the point. If you know nothing about the Warcraft game, this movie isn't for you and you should have never reviewed it because you will get lost.

I myself never played the Warcraft game, but my brother does and he caught be up to speed with the game and movie. Movie doesn't really expand in the beginning. There could have been more 'fluff' added to the storyline (me personally a longer movie is better) just so that you can get a feel of what's happening. Instead they just throw you into the world. But overall, the graphics, the amount of detail, the fighting and also the animations boost this score up from a 4/5 stars to a 5/5 stars. Well, Travis Fimmel boosted the score up as well because he is a great actor in the TV show Vikings as well... so it's a win win situation when watching the movie.

This is one the best video game released movies (way better than Pixels) in a movie theater. Don't let these critics tell you other wise.

Acting had a lot of room to improve as well as pivotal dialogue...weak delivery and uninspired performances made it feel much "cheaper" than I'm sure the bill of production would tout. Some great action and amazing CGI (mostly) kept me into it all the way through, but some very fast moving plot and weird editing caused for a jarring ride through this narrative. I hope it returns with some more attention to pacing and detail as far as storytelling and structure/acting quality goes, but this wasn't as bad as many will have you believe when it comes to video game movies. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fun movie. The style is unapologeticly fantastical; this and the effort to accurately represent the game world reflect love and respect for the source material. If you despise fantasy and video games (as some of the mainstream critics clearly do) you may not be able to get past this aspect to enjoyed the solid performances and emotionally complex story. However, making the effort is well worth your trouble.

This film absolutely succeeds as a fantasy tale doing what they do best: giving those who enter an alternative world in which they can wrestle more effectively with difficult issues. In this case, the difficult choices faced by the orcs fleeing environmental destruction and having to rely on a leader who is their only hope of escape, but is also corrupt. At the same time, the humans must decide whether to trust those of the orcs who just want a new home, while also dealing with betrayal by a champion on whom they relied. Almost every main character is also presented in terms of their connection to friends and family, and while not all are human, all have an essential humanity with which we can identify and connect. At the same time, the fantastical setting disarms what might be our usual resistance to recognizing humanity in any group that counts as "the other." It is a shame that many critics were blind to this.

The film does suffer some pacing issues, in sometimes feeling rushed, but since Director Duncan Jones has said 40 minutes were cut, I imagine that the scenes shortened or removed account for it. According to cast interviews, that actors playing Orcs spent a month working perfecting their mo-cap technique prior to filming and that they bonded over that. I think this shows, because the orcs all seem more convincing as a community. I didn't feel quite the same connection among the human characters, whic again was aggravated by some rapid pacing.

Overall though, the film was visually rich, and had compelling charcaters and story. It deserved a far better recption than it received. It was a great movie for the big screen, but better late than never! Digital copies will be available in mid-September and the discs are out a week or two later, so if you didn't see Warcraft in the theater, it's certainly worth a look now.

The movie assumes the viewer is already familiar with the characters and their motivations so it barely spares a passing moment to explain much of anything. If the viewer doesn't have at least a decent knowledge of the characters, locations, and basic history of Azeroth and Draenor, they're going to walk out of the theater wondering what the hell they just watched.

A prime example of this is my wife who only vaguely has a sense of the conflict having watched me play the various games over the years. She was more interested in the film due to the trailers and TV spots. After walking out of the theater, I had to explain the lore behind every character, most locations (she at least remembered Karazhan), and well, almost everything.

It's a movie for Warcraft lore nerds like myself but I'm not even sure we're a great audience because: 1) we already know the story the movie is telling and 2) it makes so many changes in order to accommodate a 2 hour movie window that I found myself wanting to yell at the screen repeatedly.

The drubbing it's getting in review scores is very much justified. It's not a three in my opinion because the makeup, graphics, and prop work (by WETA, no less) are all stellar but it's certainly no ten either. It's pretty to look at but niche in scope while in terms of basic story telling, Warcraft fails on most levels.

The story line conformed perfectly to the established lore, and the setting perfectly captures the scenes portrayed by the games. The acting is very good in my opinion, the emotionally charged dialog enthralls the viewer while still managing to occasionally poke fun at itself. On a visual level the movie is absolutely stunning.

The biggest problem people have with the movie is the distinct feeling it was designed to be Act I to a larger play. This is true, it very much does feel like the setup to a larger story- but that's because it is. The lore of the Warcraft universe is vast and rich in it's depth. This movie does it's best to explain the origin of the conflict presented through-out the Warcraft lore and set the stage for the progression of the story. However this does not mean that movie fails to stand on it's own. There are moments of shock, moments of pain, moments where the audience is glued to the screen only to fall back to their seats in emotional discharge. The movie does feel like the introduction to something greater, but I feel it's a pretty damn good introduction.

NO SPOILERS
If you're a fan, it's well worth the watch. If not, you'll probably be disappointed. The underlying problem is that the movie tries to be many things, but fails at being particularly good at any of them.

Don't be mistaken, though. The reviews that are trashing the movie are on the extreme. This is a movie with good humor, good characters, good worldbuilding and gorgeous visual effects that perfectly illustrate a uniquely high fantasy world, and good acting all tied together by a creative team that feels like it's earnestly trying to craft something meaningful. The story's structure is its own worst enemy, but if you're able to look past that then there's still plenty of entertainment, especially for fans of the game series.

Honestly, I thought this movie started out strong. The introduction of the orcs and all the main plot elements that would tie together this movie are woven in such a way that opens up the audience to the characters while getting you pumped up for what happens next. When the WARCRAFT logo hits, you're already sold. So, where does this movie fail, then? Aside from the third act, which I'll cover in a minute, overall the issue with the movie before then that kept distracting me was how little time was being devoted to each scene. Considering how important the characters and their relationships are in this movie, no less painted on an intricately detailed fantasy backdrop that the audience needs to be pulled into, you would think there would be more time devoted to settling us into the world with time and building some atmosphere, and giving the characters some more lines to dig into their personality and their world.
It feels like the writers were forced to work with a string of events that are supposed to happen, like a checklist. As a result, there's a clutter of scenes that could have easily been condensed and combined in order to focus in on what's really important.
The second problem with the movie is how terribly it wraps up the story. The stakes have been rising since the start of the movie. Creatures from another world have invaded a foreign land, clashes building up to war, entire world's worth of populations migrating, and then the fate of the world itself. None of this is really resolved. In fact, almost nothing is changed at the end of the movie compared to what the position the antagonists were in at the start of the movie. Main story threads are left wide open for future sequels, and overall there's no big payoff at the end to get you excited for the next. It's just a massive cliffhanger, and that leaves a sour taste even as a big fan of the series.
Honestly, this was sort of the expected outcome. The meat of Warcraft's story comes from the second and third games. The first one was much more of a "you orcs/humans, there are humans/orc over there. go and kill" kinda story, and doesn't leave a lot of room for major changes in the overarching plot. Subsequent iterations of the story through books and the like have improved it, but the framework is still the same. That should have been all the more reason to let the writers go a little crazy with the plot, giving them the creative freedom they needed to shape a tight narrative. Honestly, the first and second games could have easily been combined for this effect, letting us jump right into the more exciting parts of the Warcraft series as told through cinema.

I would say this movie was a bit of a guilty pleasure. The fan service is delivered on a silver platter, courtesy of Chris Metzen. That's not to say it's otherwise particularly bad, though. It was a fun experience, and I want nothing more than to see the sequel where the story is actually able to take off.

In my opinion, this isn't something that really interests me. While it's clear that a lot of care has went into the movie, I feel it isn't for me. It's more so of a fan service movie. Which there's nothing wrong with that.

So I was curious to know where they went with the story. There was a lot of easter eggs (loved the murloc sound effect when crossing the bridge) and the size and scope of the land(s) was nice to see enhanced for a movie rather than the smaller scale the technology could afford in World of Warcraft.

I was actually pretty glad to see it was prequel to WoW so as someone who hasn't read any books or anything other than playing WoW it was nice to get some prelude of the events happening in WoW proper. We FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY get to see mages/sorcerers/magicians/wizards whatever you want to call them (mages here) on the big screen do fantasic magic. Only thing I missed was there was no ice mage only fire and arcane. Yes I played mage a lot in the game haha. But I've always wanted to see mages do more in a movie that unlock doors and light the end of their staff (I'm looking at you Gandolf).

I HIGHLY recommend this movie and I plan on seeing it multiple times if I can! The critics are being typical critic snobs. If it's not an artsy fartsy movie or Marvel trash they dislike it. GO SEE THIS MOVIE IT'S GREAT!!!

Most important note: The movie starts meh, and gets increasingly better as time goes on. If you're someone who is very, very, extremely not open to new experiences, or someone who expects this to have a Lord of the Rings tone and will feel utterly disappointed otherwise (that's like judging ever action/drama on whether it is The Godfather), this movie may not be your best choice. If you're anyone else, then: for the past 29 hours since seeing the movie, I have been thinking "Oh My Gosh that was amazing!!." But it is fast and has confusing names, so if I didn't know the names of the 6 or so main characters before watching it (from trailers) I may have liked it less. Also, it helps to know what the Fel is. It's the green magic. They mention it quickly at the start and it's hard to catch. This is an action-fantasy. It packs a punch but requires you tolerate the first 20min, a whirlwind of names and places. It's not a fairy tale like LOTR or Harry Potter. It's closer to Die Hard with Orcs. Also, are the lines cheesy? Yes. I can't argue that. But if the amazing story draws you in, you get over it. Script is another thing that's worst at the start.

I (know little bit of warcraft stuff) loved it. Person I saw it with (knew nothing except two sentence premise) loved it. This movie is a high fantasy movie. That is the genre, but the tone is action. Don't expect a fairy-tale-like story (Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter) and especially not something told in the nearly-lyrical Lord of the Rings fashion. Rather, it is an interesting world with magic that hits hard and punches that hit harder. You don't have a nobel, driven Aragorn, but rather a sarcastic-talking fighter that fights when he cares and fights when he doesn't. It's not going to be one of the top 20 movies as all time (like LOTR might be), but its one of the most enjoyable I've ever seen. If Lord of the Rings is The Godfather of fantasy, then the is more like Crank or John Wick, with the plot complexity of a Game of Thrones episode.
I saw this movie in IMAX 3D and I like it for more than the visuals, but that certainly helped the immersion and helped me buy in to the movie, something that many critics seemed to have trouble with. I would strongly note that the movie starts okay but kinda meh, and it gets increasingly better as time goes on, leading to an amazing final act. Both me and the person I saw it with are a forgiving audience (though her more than I generally), and I think that if someone is not satisfied immediately then looks for problems, well like any new fantasy world it requires some trust to buy in to. Not more than any other, but that is a component of fantasy.
I had personally seen all the character trailers, and I was able to clarify who's who for my friend as the movie goes on. It is most enjoyable if you catch every line, like any other movie, but this one goes by fast and I do not know to what extent my ability to remind my friend who the main 6 or so characters were early in the movie affected their love of it. I'd say it would help to know who Durotan, Ogrim (he has a hammer), Blackhand (gross beard), Gul'Dan (evil-looking), Garona, and Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel) are beforehand, if for no other reason than that it takes a few minutes to tell characters apart.
The acting is not the best I've ever seen, but its pretty good. Ben Foster, Paula Patton, and Anna Galvin sell the story best, and Travis Fimmel and Toby Kebbel are pretty good, with the rest of the cast at the back of the pack. To be fair, none of them had much to work with script-wise, which is probably the biggest negative of the entire film, especially at the beginning (like I said, starts at its weakest and gets better).
Ultimately, this movie is insanely fun. EVen though I've played a little World of Warcraft, I only caught one reference and in the game I'm not invested in either humans or orcs, so I came in with nothing other than the excitement of a large-scale fantasy flick with orcs that pack a punch.
Relative to real-world technology eras, if Lord of the Rings was medieval, this may be closer to renaissance.
I never got that emotional, but I'm not an emotional movie watcher in general, even at the end of the first season of game of thrones. My friend is sorta the opposite, and I could see her getting stressed out as she sat next to me during some scenes. I don't think the average movie-goer will come out of this with wet eyes, but it does have some real emotional weight for those that don't reject it in the first 20min.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So a lot of the people reviewing the movie on here state quickly that they are fans of the property and I think they are missing the biggest flaw in the film. As someone who has not played any Warcraft game I was lost throughout most of the film as it seemed to feel no need to explain itself. As for the characters in the film well I don't know if they are from the games or not but very little development is given to them and romantic plot lines seem to appear out of thin air. The CGI was god awful for such a big summer movie at too many points that at several moments I audibly scoffed at the film. It then confidently sets up sequels all throughout the ending while you yawn as CG creatures beat each other up and Shrek Moses washes down a stream. I'll say it again though I don't care if this movie was made for the fans because the fans will have a hard time showing this movie to anyone else to get them intrigued in this series. I've seen better **** looking at the paper after I wipe Expand

I haveHow this film got such a low critic score is beyond me, but then again these days critics are so jaded and conditioned by certain types of films that they can't even begin to think about embracing something out of their comfort zones. I have never played WoW and my limited experience with Warcraft 2 and 3 aren't much to go by (not to mention I'm hardly even a Blizzard fan after I found Diablo III disappointing), so I didn't have much invested in this movie or universe, but rather went in with an open mind, ready for an interesting story to unfold, and I wasn't at all let down - you might even say I was shockingly surprised at the quality of this film.

Warcraft is something new, something spectacular, and most importantly, something that uses the tropes of high fantasy to full effect, with insanely powerful magic spells, giant mounts, brutal action sequences (cleverly filmed so as to garner the PG-13 rating), and compelling storylines, bolstered by some of the best motion-capture work this side of the Planet of the Apes films. The visual effects are stunning and the pace rarely ever lets up as the viewer is whisked away to and from the many locales of Azeroth. The fight scenes are well-shot and the magic in particular stands out as being especially well-realized. For those seeking eye candy, the attention to detail in the visual effects, characters, armor, sets, and weapons is nothing short of magical. Weta Workshop's work on the armor and practical effects deserves every commendation it can get.

The worst thing I can say about this film is that it definitely feels like it was trimmed way down by the studio. Allegedly, 40 minutes were left on the cutting room floor, and I get the feeling they would have gone a long way towards fixing the rushed nature and lightning-fast subplots that marred the film's second act. I'll gladly watch a director's cut with the restored footage. If I had one other major complaint to lodge, it's that the performances are somewhat uneven, and on whose shoulders the blame rests will vary from viewer to viewer (Khadgar and King Wrynn could have been better cast, IMO).

If you're at all interested in high fantasy, even if you have no prior experience in Azeroth, I highly recommend this film. You'll likely find much more to love than to hate.

These minor nit picks however, do not subtract from the movie as a whole, the CGI was spot on, the soundtrack was glorious and it just felt like Warcraft, I can't wait to see the director's cut and all the story they cut for theatrical release, which is what really stopped this movie from being even better. I hope they are able to continue the story in this universe and learn from what few mistakes they made moving forward. Expand

Moon was an intriguing watch with plenty of nods to Kubrick and Source Code was an extremely entertaining Sci-Fi/Action tale, so what's the worst that could happen?... Warcraft is the answer you were looking for.
Warcraft is an abysmal attempt at storytelling and it seems that the only thing the film sets out to achieve (and does so successfully) is setting up a sequel. The film can be forgiven for the CGI-fest that it is, it's based on a game and the scale that the film is operating on likely lends itself more to the green screen. However what it can't be forgiven for is a script that seems like its right out of some poor sod's fan fiction. There are lines in this film that are hard to believe got past the first draft let alone made it to the big screen, the 'no he's not/yes he is' argument between Lothar and Garona was head-in-hands embarrassing. It's difficult to blame the actors for simply going through the motions when the material they had to work with was piss-poor... but not that difficult.
The acting was reminiscent of a back-alley stage production and made me want to disassociate with any humans on screen in favour for their Orc counterparts. It's hard to believe that there was more life to be found in the motion-captured Orcs than in any human equivalent but beggars can't be choosers.
The one major positive that comes from this film is that Duncan Jones proves that it is possible to translate games to the big screen. There is a tangible sense that you are watching a game, from the camera angles that are evocative of cut-scenes during game play to the shallow dialogue and convenient plot points, it's unsurprising that many hardcore Warcraft fans enjoy this film. The problem is that where this should have been a film about a game and it became a film of a game.
It's all too similar to sitting down at a friend's house and watching him play a game for two hours, the fun's going to dry up after about 30 minutes and this is exactly what happened here. I would only recommend this to those that are fans of the source material... and perhaps not a fan of film.

Very, very average movie.

The CGI scenes range from breathtaking to bad (magic effects and CGI crowds in particular), sets are very cheap and backgrounds are quite fake. Live-action humans and CGI orcs did not blend together well in the combat. For an action movie, there is not much action (just 3 battles in total), choreography is quite poor and it seems the extras do not take their performance seriously. The Patton's character features a pair of very fake-looking plastic tusks, so it is impossible to take it seriously.

Cast and acting was disappointing, as the actors were bored and overact like your high school's drama studio. Dominic Cooper was particularly miscast as the king of the humans, as he is not of king's material at all. Ben Foster was spoiling his role from the very first encounters. Paula Patton plays a character that has possibly the most development in the story, but fails to do that convincingly.

Script is ridden with silliness and lacks logic very often. There is many cringeworthy dialogs.

The story is true to the source material and it actually benefits from the changes made that are clearing it of the legacy cruft and retcons being gathered since 1994, when the _Warcraft_ universe was born. But the movie is heavily cut and characters are robbed from any possibility to develop themselves.

If you have a chance to watch it in IMAX 3D, do so, otherwise wait for DVD in August or a TV airing.

I love the genre and I am a fan of Warcraft. I left the theater feeling 'meh'. The visuals and scenery were great, the general idea behind the plot was not bad, the story and the characters really killed it for me.

The actors themselves seemed to migrate straight from a LARP festival (live action role playing - try youtubing it if you aren't familiar with the term) to the movie. Almost as if they took hardcore warcraft addicts and cosplayers and asked them to star in the movie. Rather geeky, a bit awkward, cool only to other LARP'ers, and not very believable in the roles they were supposed to be playing. Ironically, the CGI orcs were the most believable characters in the movie. None of the human characters really fit the roles; rather, it seemed like each actor just wished that they fit that role. I suppose this is why there are so many positive user reviews....a lot of warcraft addicts can relate to the actors and as such are wiling to overlook glaring story line and acting flaws. Not that being a geek is a bad thing, but in large part due to the actors, I don't think this movie will have very much appeal outside of the geek warcraft culture.

The story line relies on an over-abundance of suspended disbelief by the audience. I don't mean suspend disbelieve that magic and orcs exist, I mean believe that the 'guardian' is extremely jealous of a mage trainee with no basis or foundation for that jealousy; believe that the main hero can effortlessly stand up to the orcs who rip through other soldiers like rag dolls; believe in two main characters falling in love even though there is no apparent chemistry or buildup between them; and many many many more examples. It skips character development almost entirely at many points and in other places is completely inconsistent (like the guardian being unbelievably and overly jealous of the mage hero, yet constantly alluding to that hero becoming the next guardian, even though the mage hero shows no desire or actions of trying to, or even wanting to, become the guardian).

All in all, the story felt a lot like a semi-decent fanfic; lots of missing information and plot gaps, lots of inconsistencies, and not very polished or professional, which really sucks for an epic multi-million dollar hollywood blockbuster.

I watched this movie with an open mind with no bias towards Blizzard even though I do love most of their games. ;)
Even though I already had a bad feeling about this game-to-movie conversion and was already getting poor reivews, I wanted to watch it because I enjoy these kinds of movies and enjoy Warcraft. But after watching it, I can say that the movie had potential to be good as it somewhat lured me in but it lacked certain elements in execution to make it a good movie. It doesn't matter if the movie-goer knew the characters and story already or not....the movie was average at best. Excuses from fanboys that are forgiving it because the director had to rush the story in 2 hours is not acceptable. The director just did not execute it properly. There are better directors that could do a better job in 2 hours (Peter *cough* Jackson). Even a 3 hour movie would'nt have saved the Warcraft movie. The amazing CG and visual FX can't save it.
I actually had no connection with any of the real characters except for the CG ones. Strange that the director did a better job of convincing character development with the CG orcs like Durotan than he did with the actual characters like Lothar. Garona's character had potential in the beginning but her story and character fell flat. Like I said, extending this movie another hour wouldn't have saved the poor script writing, bad acting, cheap looking costume design/material, etc. This could have easily been a SyFy channel or whatever TV channel cheesy movie or straight-to-DVD release if it were not for the over-the-top CG characters.

The Warcraft movie had top-notch CG characters, good voices and voice-overs. It probably would've been better if it was all CG in my opinion. LOL
The cast was decent but the director was horrible at bringing out more convincing roles out of the talent or lack thereof. Peter Jackson would've done a better job of doing this and probably make a better movie out of it anyways. I wasn't a big fan of the Priest, Anduin or even the Guardian, Medivh. Anduin seemed like he belonged in a cheesy SyFy channel movie (even though he wasn't a horrible actor) he just seemed out of place. Travis Fimmel, Lothar, just played his Viking self pretty well. Dominic Cooper, King Llane, didn't look like a king to me but Ruth Negga, Taria, played her role pretty well. It was weird seeing them together again as I have been watching them on the "awesome" Preacher TV series on AMC. Good actors and actresses but not convincing enough to save this movie. But all I can say is Garona was one hot orc-human chick. Although the love-interest attempt was just plain horrible. I felt no connection with any of the human characters. It felt like it was an intern directing his first movie. He had all the elements for successful story-telling. But script writing, story, humor, etc. was poorly executed. There are a lot of movies that have have below average production but I still find a way to enjoy it. Army of Darkness is still one of my favorites. But Warcraft is no Army of Darkness quality type of movie. It is a movie branded with the epic scope of Warcraft and Blizzard. It is unfortunate that the Blizzard name and Warcraft game could not save this movie from being great....like all of their products.

The overall look of the film was good but not great. One problem I already noticed, even from the posters and the trailers, was that the humans (knights) didn't even look like they fit. The armor didn't look convincing...even the subtle movement of shield in the very first scene didn't look believable...as if it was made out of foam. Like I said the CG was great and it overpowered, in a sense, the human characters. The humans didn't look like they fit. The lighting, set design and some of the armor looked off on the real life elements. It looked like it didn't match breath-taking CG quality of the rest of the movie.
The CG Orcs, cityscapes, environments, etc. overpowered the real characters and set designs. Pity.
I guess all I can say is that with great CG comes great responsibility. I gave it a 4 because it made me feel liek playing the Warcraft 3 game. And also, the story had potential but was poorly executed. Otherwise I would've given it a 3. Watch it if you want to be entertained by an epic popcorn flick B movie with awesome visual FX.

i understand this movie is a game movie so they want to stick to the world the gamers know but i think this could have been a lot better with a better director and a better written story, i hope this isn't the end of the blizzards movies but i also hope its the end of blizzards movies of this quality.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a surprise another bad video game based movie, probably the worst movie of 2016 till now, i mean Batman V Superman was better than this pile of garbage you call a movie. The events are so inconsistent with each other and made no sense, like where the hell did a bunch of magical wizards appear and why did the guardian open the portal in the first place. Second of all, A ROMANCE BETWEEN A MAN AND A ORC is completely illogical. Why the hell would you kill off one of the 2 main characters in the movie if you're planning a sequel. This movie was so dull and boring that is made sleep through 75% of it, the only semi decent scene in the movie is the final battle. Expand

Let me start by stating that I am an avid WoW player. As such, I was really looking forward to this movie to see where they would go with it....and ended up extremely disappointed.

First, the entire movie felt like nothing more than one large extended cut scene, very similar to what is already in the game at various achievement places. Why do we need an entire movie of cut scenes? Moving past that, the theme and story line lead into how the current expansion, Warlords of Draenor, began. Content that is now 2+ years old, with the next expansion being released in just over 2 months! So I simply paid to see the beginning of all the content that is ending?? It would have made much more sense to be a lead into the next expansion Legion, to possibly draw new players into the game with excitement of what's to come.

The only reason I gave even the 3/10 score I did is due to my being a fan of the game itself.

I can understand critics. They are lost in the world created for gamers which tastes better if you have that background. But this is not a bad movie. It is not good either.

There’s a big mix of perfectly made orcs and very plastic looking humans; of powerful magic and colorful tricks and I know, I know - it is a video game adaptation. But it is also a movie. And not a very good one.

My main concern in this chaos of war is not the plot which seems pretty simple and understandable and explained very well in the movie; it leaves some place for imagination though and that’s good because we do not need more boring scenes. The main concern are the acting, details and effects that make this movie a bad mix of triple-A production and a B class picture. You can see these plastic looking armors and swords, these rubber hauberks along with perfectly modeled orcs and their mimics. A great looking scenery along with bad lighting which makes the CGI very noticeable. And the actors performance? There’s little to none. A dull looking, few actors that are introduced are uninteresting in their play with the exception of Travis Fimmel who is doing his best to show some feelings. But there’s no time, this is war and funny looking guards have to die, a king has to make a forgettable speech and the rest of cast just have to vanish in the sea of computer generated effects and cheap love story.

But it is also fun. It is good that they have found some room for a murlock and a polymorph. It was good to see those familiar places and names. It was pretty damn good to see the warband in all it’s glory. But there’s more to show and I hope they will add some more details to the characters next time. It’s sad when digitally generated heroes are better that the real ones (or maybe they were supported by better actors?). And they could make some better costumes too. It is still a movie.

There’s still much to do in this very fresh movie universe. And I hope for the best. FOR THE HORDE!

Good fun for sure. It's not often we get good fantasy movies. I went in with pretty low expectations, and left pleasantly surprised.

That being said, it's definitely a movie "for the fans." I'm not sure the uninitiated would understand a lot of the film, and might even find the -extremely- high fantasy setting to be a bit suffocating. I found myself often wondering how I would have known something if I had never played the games before.

My two biggest gripes would be the pacing and the character development, which kind of go hand in hand in a way. I found myself wanting more development, more screen time... I wanted to get to know these people more than I was able to. It falls short here.

All things aside though I feel they really did a great job bringing Azeroth to life. I hope the movie is successful. It was a lot of fun to watch and was on some level emotional for me as a life long fan. If you're a fan of fantasy and big, loud adventures then I think you will enjoy it.

On one hand, the producers wanted to make an epic film like Lord of The Rings, so there are crazy sets, ridiculous customs, awesome special effects, and even a narrator, but they also wanted to make the WOW geeks happy too, so there are realms, clans, portals, kings, wizards, betrays, and if you've never played the game it's all very confusing and more than somewhat boring. The story is complicated, but to sum it up, an evil wizard has destroyed the Orcs home world, so he has opened a portal to the realm of the humans, where the Orcs think they'll have an easy time taking over, but didn't expect the humans to have a magic Guardian. It's a film of fighting, gibberish, and non-sense that I'm sure the gamers loved, but I didn't, I fell asleep. As for the cast, well, I guess the filmmakers spent all their money on the effects and costumes, cause there is really no one of name in this film, and some of these people honestly wouldn't have been cast in their high school plays. Some of the actors were so bad, I think they agreed to do this for free, just to have a major motion picture on their resume. The bottom line, I saw it for curiosity and I'm sure a lot of other people will too. The special effect were really cool and it looks terrific in 3-D, but the story is confusing, it's just one crazy fight after another and there really isn't much of a point to the whole thing. If you're going to see it, go see it in 3-D. It makes the effects look cooler and if you fall asleep, the people you are with won't notice and won't bother you. Expand

I'm giving it a 7. It's on the higher end of how I may really feel about it.

Here's a few short review points to go off of.

Cons.

- The story's fluency. This is probably the biggest problem with the movie as a whole. We were told the movie had multiple directors (Which I dont know if they all worked separately to form a giant mess...) but at the times the movies jumps ALL over the place. Did not seem like they had a solid script to go off of. Scenes randomly ended, and the transition to the next scene was worse than the one before.

-Acting was bad. the female orc Garona (or half human/orc) was very hard to believe.

Pros.

+ CGI was great

+ Some battles were awesome

+ A lot of cool classes, magic, etc, lore from the game

+ The last 30 minutes or so was very well done. The story had you drawn in, the characters were building, the action was intense. After seeing the ending of the movie, I said.. The Warcraft series can easily have many sequels to come just like the Marvel franchise. They just need to work on the holes of the movie, which is mostly story telling, script, and directing. (ugh, sounds like everything)

---

Verdict.

If you are a HUGE Warcraft fan, go see it. The ending alone will make up for it. I for myself, fell asleep for a good 20 minutes. The filler was bad and some plots were all over the place, but if you can look pass it, there's something to enjoy here.

Though some of their criticisms are valid, there was so much to enjoy, and the good outweighs the bad by far. It was genuinely a good story, great CGI, good acting, and at times, quite moving. I felt true concern for the heroes on both sides of the war, particularly Lothar and Durotan, which is a credit to the creators because I know they wanted to achieve that. I definitely had tears in my eyes a few times during some sad moments (and there were several). And fans of the game like me will surely enjoy seeing key places in Azeroth and some of the game's humanoid races brought to life.
I do agree that there should have been a bit more character development, and the plot moved along too fast at times, leaving people confused. I would have been fine with a little longer movie if they allowed more time for those things. I saw it in 3-D, which really brought me into the film. It was obvious that the scenes were designed to be particularly appealing in a 3-D movie, and it really worked well.
I enjoyed the movie and look forward to the next, hoping that together with international sales, the producers find that it will be worthwhile to make the sequel. If so, I hope the writers listen to at least some of the criticisms regarding the character development and overly fast pace, so these factors can be improved for the next installment.

I found the movie to be completely lackluster. The pacing was horrible and the plot only made sense if you're a fan. If a viewer is required to go to a third party media (games, books) to understand the plot of a movie, it's simply a bad movie. Warcraft was made simply for the spectacle of being made.

Blizzard had an opportunity to take a very lore rich franchise - as rich as any established literary franchise - and expand its influence but instead chose to make a fan service film with CGI that we'll likely look back and laugh at in a couple years. If you're not an existing fan, ignore all these highly rated reviews because, like the movie, they are written for and by Warcraft fans who are incapable of understanding that a review is inherently a comparison between other movies in the genre. Putting this movie in the same class as other high fantasy films (think Avatar) is simply a joke.

Given its niche audience, it would have been better off as a worldwide straight-to-digital release. Expect the Blu-ray to come out the same time as the next WoW expansion (in a mere two and a half months) because if there's one thing Blizzard excels at, it's marketing and hype.

Those, who like myself, have played the game and know the lore, will understand what is going on but won't enjoy the movie as well as they already know the story.
I will start with the good elements. The creators of this movie made an obvious effort to bring the world of Warcraft to life on the big screen. The seasoned WoW player will be amazed by seeing the places, elements and characters of this game in a movie. Nostalgia, that is all I got from this movie, on the positive side.
In good fantasy movies, certain elements must be present. First: a good introduction to the fantasy world where the movie occurs, how it is different from our reality and the main plot of the movie. Second: a good introduction to the main characters, and if they are not human, what makes them different and what are their backstories. And thirdly, and this applies to any type of movie, character development; events and conversations designed to reveal the personalities, tendencies and motives of each of the main characters.
In this movie, there was not much room for any of that. Add to that the fact that the dialogues are serious and the acting is textbook to the point of making it seem like a high budget porno movie, with a few action scenes. What also stroke me as odd is the bland, almost lame dull soundtrack which is worlds apart from the great music from Warcraft and WoW games. The overall screenplay assumes the viewer is already familiar with the characters, the places and the backstory on which this movie stands. The visual effects are good but not great but the outfits of humans appeared amateurish and stupid and considering the time gap between the two, they are not much better than say: Power Rangers!
This movie was a huge disappointment, something which we WoW players have grown accustomed to. It looks like a sad attempt at creating a prequel to a series of movies about a game franchise that once was the best but now is only a pale hollow version of what it used to be. To a non-gamer, this move is a lot of hype and marketing (which is blizzard's greatest strengths to be honest), a lot of money spent on a movie that doesn't really offer much in the way of storytelling, which is generally what fantasy movies are all about, and that closes with an open ending that doesn't resolve anything.

Effects... nice & yawn. Acting: Horrid. Writing: Horrid. Serious eyerolls await you. I guess it's ok for the fanboys or who are desperate to see their game in lights again, but overall... nah -It's a fail.

The acting was almost laughably bad and most of the human costumes looked cheesy and plastic-y, which didn't help with overall immersion. They did a decent job with the orcs, although Gul'dan looked rather odd.
I'm glad the attempt was at least made to make Medivh seem mysterious and powerful, but I feel they failed at a proper portrayal. As a whole his character felt silly and underdeveloped.
Overall the action sequences were enjoyable but the film was far too cheesy for my taste.

The first 1/4th of the movie is great and then the plot seems like they didn't know what they were doing. Seemed like they ran over budget and the writers weren't on the same page. They show the teleportation spell used like 7 times, get more visuals please.

Also, why are all human characters romantically interested in the female orc slave? like wth?! Why is the orc slave getting better treatment than a princess? Some dialogues by Maedivh make no sense at all! Even other characters literally have a confused look.

TL;DR version: As a Warcraft player, it's an average retelling. As a movie goer? This is awful.

Blizzard has tried to stuff the story of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and what led up to it into a one and a half hour movie. That's far too much content for such a short time and in the movie, it shows. The opening scenes are a barely explained whirlwind rush of plot devices, scenes, characters and barely explained settings that no person not familiar with Warcraft will understand. Acting is stiff, dialogue is unnatural and forced, the plot doesn't have the time it needs to be properly fleshed out and to end after all that, the movie leaves plenty of room for a 'sequel'. Blizzard's ability to handle storytelling in games and movies has been slipping for a while now. I just hope that Blizzard either learns from their numerous mistakes with this and if they do try a sequel, to do it properly. But again, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness had an equally long story. You can't fit that properly into a movie. Giving it a 2/10 because they put effort into the CGI.

For WoW fans certainly a pleasure but I personally can not do anything. All I see is a lame fantasy film.
The story has absolutely nothing and it's all so terrible be provided.
In Asia a success but the US spurned the film so far. This also right.

SO, it came as a surprise that what I got instead was a decent fantasy movie. One that I enjoyed more than any of the Hobbit movies, even with all of the obvious setting up of future movies (studios need to stop doing this), lackluster acting, and some cheap effects, the movie came off as a solid 7/10 film for me.

Duncan Jones did the fans of the series real service, maybe even too much; I played a lot of WoW years ago, and grew up playing the RTS series, so I was very at home in the world, but I don't know how well the world-building was fed to the uninitiated. There was a lot going on in a movie that was 2 hours long.

Ultimately, I got used to the CGI in the same way I did the new Planet of the Apes movies, so the fights were fun, Gul'dan and his death magic were awesome, and it was oddly not predictable.

Blizzard I want my money back, who wrote this horrible script, its like they wasted most of their budget on CGI, this movie will ruin a future game to movie development, as usual Blizzards GREED ruins gaming.

All the crazy-high scores from WoW Fans are just as **** and fake as the incredibly low scores from the critics: be honest and accept that this is at best a decent film with some terrible acting on the part of the Humans.

The Orcs actually look great and the main Orcs are simply far better actors than the "Alliance".

If you are a fan of WoW or Warcraft itself you will like this, if not you will simply find it too silly and confusing. But no matter how big a fan you are, a rating of 10 or even 9 is completely dishonest fanboy behaviour.

The acting was so abysmal anybody could have done it better. The scripting dialogue was an incoherent mess of random words that barely described its richer fantasy universe's history, and timeline providing little explanation behind content that was just supposed to happen and not very well, when it contained so many modern cliches, puns, and gags. The lore was also quite wrong, as this film was toned down for 6 year old's, instead of making it into a niche market gaining its cult gamer status from using more appropriate ratings. The CGI was okay if you consider that its affects were marketed for those 6 year old's, where even the Frostwolves are smiling, and the orcs scratch their heads talking like some other JarJar Bink's am such a dumb orc orc, don't worry the humans weren't any better check the king of Stormwind, white guy with a beard check and all those boxes are now complete, setting the acting, stage, nuance, tone and body language, not at all he has a beard so he can act. Epic fail.

In short this is a hamfisted Disney attempt at trying to turn a dying profit by selling the children more toys as they make another skylanders from using its barbie dolls. Otherwise I have absolutely no idea what I have had the displeasure of watching except for a giant puke fest that has me vomiting. Because there will be pandas and butterflies next time. Not the undead demigods blighting the realm

Avoid, or you will also be left wishing that a dark portal open, satanically consuming this audience
