The plot is very ambitious and risky, but the studio managed to pull it off once again. The film is surprisingly interesting considering that there is really not a lot of dialogue. The robot characters can basically only say a few words and somehow we still manage to love them. That is such an accomplishment. The animation is outstanding which is implied with the name Pixar and the film is a beautiful visual experience. I put off watching this movie for far too long. Expand

Nemo-mento, stuck in his tank suffering three-second memory wipes. And now WALL•E, a boggle-eyed robot crushed by loneliness. Ninety minutes of soul-searching later he’s found his own off-switch and powered down. Metallic suicide. What a film.

Or maybe we made that ending up. This is Pixar after all, a company so expert in creating family friendly-fare that when they had their iffy Cars moment they rebounded spectacularly with adorable rodent romp Ratatouille. All was in order – and round the bend was oh-so-cute WALL•E. Everybody wanted a replica bin months before they’d seen the film and when 10 minutes were sneak-peeked at Total Film’s Red Carpet Preview Event in March there was barely a dry eye in the house.

Not only brave – early footage concentrated on the litter-clunker alone, sometimes with advanced mechanoid EVE, never near anyone who could actually talk – Pixar’s 2008 effort looked stunning, beautiful, epic... And for the first 40 minutes WALL•E is everything you’d hoped for.

Our Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class hero has spent the best part of a millennium sorting out the rubbish left behind by humans when they abandoned our decrepit planet. Everyday he scoops, compresses and releases neat trash squares before shutting down for the night, rising grumpily to fulfil his 9-5.

The early exchanges star just WALL•E, a cockroach and the first dystopian backdrop the Pixar designers have sunk their digi-pens into.

It’s a vivid setting perfect for the inquisitive cleaner as he discovers bras, Rubik’s cubes and Michael Crawford, his various bleeps evoking non-human emoting unlike anything since ET. Then he meets probe droid EVE. Their love blossoms as WALL•E demonstrates the wonder of a whisk, shows her musicals on VHS and then – once she shuts down, having found her objective – stays by her side, sheltering her from the rain and keeping her company with a one-sided game of Pong. It’s like what people do when their loved ones fall into comas. It’s incredibly affecting.

But with kids no doubt scratching around their popcorn buckets hoping for Action! Light! Dialogue! the spell is broken. It’s not necessary (from an adult POV at least) but Pixar must be thinking of their ADD audience by shifting the action wholesale from sparse earth to the thriving spaceport where EVE is from and WALL•E follows. The focus widens as dozens more robots enter the fray alongside thousands of fat, short-legged humans. The gist is that our descendents reverse-evolved to blobs after their every need was satiated by machines. It’s the death of the human race. Like Skynet, but without the violence.

The message – as with the film’s overriding eco-warning – is well-observed and well-meant, but quite what kids, the ones served by the overwhelming increase of characters and action, will make of it is uncertain. This was a unique animation. But for half an hour at least it’s just the latest brilliantly drawn cartoon. Yet such gripes are mean-spirited for a film saturated with ideas, originality and passion. WALL•E may look like the bastard offspring of Johnny 5 and, er, Johnny 5, but he delights with every move. It’s in the details. From his solar panel making the Mac switch-on ‘Boing!’ sound when charged, to his wounded-pride droopy eyes when EVE calls him “Wally!”, he’s one genius Pixar creation destined to be many a child’s plaything and, yes, many an adult’s wastebin.

So where does WALL•E rank in the studio’s heralded history? Put it this way: for 40 minutes, it’s pretty much the greatest film they’ve made. Woody, Nemo, Mr Incredible, Remy? They’ve got nothing on WALL•E flying through space with a fire extinguisher. But the bloated mid-section, where catering to kids takes precedence over silent film-style beauty, is just good, not great. Would a feature-length WALL•E and EVE holding hands on Earth story work? Lord knows. But it would have been fantastic to find out. Pixar arthouse. It was so almost so.

A brilliant blockbuster. WALL•E is the star, EVE his inspiration, their planet an immaculate backdrop. The story may flag when the robots head to space and kids may be underwhelmed, but that doesn't matter. This is still a bold, beautiful achievement.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It does take a little while to get going, and lacks the pace and fun of some of the other pixar movies
VERDICT: A technical achievement in film making that also appeals in terms of character and plot. Very well done Pixar.

WALL-E is a brilliantly animated film from Pixar that underscores all that make their films great and touches you in a special way. However, whereWALL-E is a brilliantly animated film from Pixar that underscores all that make their films great and touches you in a special way. While the subtext is not exactly subtle in any sense of the word, it is still a great message. However, where this film really blows you away is in the characterization of its robot protagonists and the way it makes you feel their emotions. A truly romantic and epic journey of two robots who fall in love, WALL-E is incredibly adorable and powerful, all while the world surrounding the robots is entirely lethargic and barren. While the message of the film is good, this relationship and the way they make them come to life without either robot speaking a single word absolutely stunned me. Additionally, it did a great job blending what appeals to the kids and what appeals to the adults very well and made a very family friendly film that will leave everyone feeling satisfied. Overall, WALL-E is a fantastically made and incredibly powerful film that will leave you wanting to get up off the couch and sit down and watch a movie with lots of dancing and singing. Expand

Wall-e the character is impossible not to love, he's just so adorable. The villain, Auto (a parody of HAL from 2001:a space odyssey) is a unique villain because he's just programmed to do what he does, he's not good or bad. He's just not sentient so he can just obey his programming. Overall, this is a deep and amazing film, with a great message. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A spectacular masterpiece Disney Pixar has made its own 2001: A Space Odyssey

A touching tear-jerking odyssey of a lovable robotic trash compactor Wall-E who lives in a heavily polluted and uninhabited Planet Earth, 700 years into the future, who gets lovestruck with a mysterious visitor from deep space, a Vegetation evaluator called EVE.

Soon WALL-E finds himself following EVE out of this world, across the Galaxy and soon in a distant surviving human outpost were Humanity's only hope for sustaining life is left at the hands of the two and a precious living plant from Earth, and the malfunctioning machinery that threatens to stop them and continue to corrupt the last surviving remnants of the human race.

A powerful climatic space saga, I was amazed at getting a chance to see this film in theaters, Highly recommendable its one of the best animated films that can't be avoided!

In an animated marketplace where everything is starting to look and feel the same, WALL-E stands out because it exhibits a unique identity without losing its appeal to viewers of all ages. It's a romantic comedy where the principals are robots. It doesn't shy away from long passages without dialogue and it doesn't throw in catchy tunes and dazzling-but-pointless action sequences just to keep the younger component of the audience from becoming restless. WALL-E has a heart to equal many of the Pixar/Disney releases to precede it, including Toy Story and Finding Nemo (WALL-E's writer/director, Andrew Stanton, was involved in both), but a sensibility that is more mature. This is one of those recently rare animated films that adults can attend without children in tow. It's good family fare, to be sure, but it's more than an activity to spend some time with the kids. WALL-E is the best mainstream animated film since The Incredibles.

The first 30 minutes of WALL-E are virtually dialogue-free. Nearly 700 years in the future, Earth is an uninhabited wasteland. Pillars of trash taller than skyscrapers dot the city skylines and the planet is surrounded by a garbage belt. Pollution, not global warming, has driven all life into space. The robot WALL-E (voice of Ben Burtt) has remained behind, slowly doing his job day-in and day-out: collecting and compacting trash, then neatly stacking it. His only companion is an indestructible cockroach. Then, one day, WALL-E's ordered life is interrupted by the arrival of EVE (voice of Elissa Knight), a robot sent by a spaceship for indeterminate reasons. She's sleeker and more advanced than WALL-E, but he overcomes his initial fear of her and makes contact. They form a fragile bond - until EVE unexpectedly shuts down. WALL-E first tries to revive her, but when that doesn't work, he is satisfied with protecting her until her spaceship returns. Unwilling to lose his new friend so quickly, WALL-E hitches a ride and soon learns the fate of those who abandoned Earth so many years ago.

As WALL-E starts, it looks much different from the average Pixar film. Instead of the vibrant colors we have become accustomed to, this movie is suffused with browns. This is, after all, a post apocalyptic world where almost all life has ceased. By limiting the artists' palettes, Stanton creates a world that is both alien and familiar, and one that indicates from the start that this isn't going to be "business as usual." The music is also atypical for a Disney animated movie. Instead of jovial tunes by Phil Collins or Alan Menken, we have excerpts from "Hello Dolly!" (WALL-E has an old VHS tape of the musical that he watches repeatedly), Louis Armstrong's "Le Vie en Rose," and "Thus Spake Zarathustra" (popularly known as the "Theme from 2001").

Central to WALL-E's narrative is the "romance" between the lead character and EVE. What's amazing about the way these two interact is that the animators are able to humanize them through tiny gestures. Neither has a real face and they rarely speak anything more than electronic approximations of their names, yet we grow to care for them as deeply as we might any flesh-and-blood couple facing impossible odds in a live-action movie. The task for the animators is even more challenging here than in Cars, because at least in that film the automobiles were given human features and personalities. Here, WALL-E and EVE intentionally remain alien and robotic. Watching the way in which these two interact is the movie's chief pleasure - from WALL-E's initial fear of Eve, to her exasperation with him when she realizes he has stowed away on board the ship and is creating havoc, to her eventual fear for his safety. WALL-E and EVE are a great screen couple.

The film sounds a couple of cautionary notes. The first is the old-school ecological message of what a consumption-based society can do to a planet when pollution runs unchecked. The second relates to what happens to human beings when they become so lazy that all they do is lie around being waited on by robots. One of WALL-E's big heroic moments is when a futuristic human being, the captain of a space ship (Jeff Garlin) literally stands up to the movie's version of HAL. (One wonders whether the Captain's first name, which is not given, might be Dave.)

This movie possesses a vibrant heart and a solid story.

I loved every minute of it. And you know what? A lot of people agree with me! It was the ninth highest grossing film back in 2008. The relationship with Wall-E and Eve is very strong, and most of the characters are likable. I think people hate the second half because they weren't interested what the ship offers (which is surprising, if you ask me). The humans act the same, with the exception of a couple, and people really liked the first half where there was only little dialogue, and we only had to focus on Wall-E and Eve. But, like I said before, I LOVED this movie. I hope Pixar would make more great films like this. Expand

The picture feels weirdly, and disappointingly, disjointed, something that starts out as poetry and ends as product.

In a devastated and abandoned world of the future, in a city which once was presumably New York, the only signs of life are a cockroach and a small mechanical robot - Waste Allocation Land Lifter – Earth Class, known as
Wall-E.

Wall-E industriously collects trash and converts it into neat square blocks.
He’s a hoarder who collects all sorts of stuff including a video with a couple of sequences from the 1969 musical HELLO DOLLY, which, for him, represents happy, romantic humanity.

Then a probe from outer space arrives bringing with it a pure white robot with blue eyes – Wall-E calls her Eve.

Recovering from the less-than-appealing CARS, the Pixar team have come up with an almost experimental animated film with WALL-E; for most of the movie there’s no dialogue at all as we watch the little robot go about his tasks or hunker down in his restricted world. This is all very cleverly done and the romance between the robots is quite touching.

Later the film literally expands its horizons as it moves into outer space to see what happened to the human beings who abandoned their dying planet years earlier.

Yes, this is a message movie, a cautionary tale about how we’re destroying our environment, but the bitter pill is packaged in such a way that children and adults of all ages should enjoy the lecture.

Director Andrew Stanton has pulled off a remarkable achievement here. The feature is preceded, by the way, by one of those very funny Pixar short films, this time about a magician and a very strong-willed rabbit.

The first 40 mins of Wall-E is a cinematic poem on cosmic loneliness. There's no dialogue, no voice-over; it's just pure atmosphere. The plot is surprisingly bleak. Humans have abandoned the planet but they had forgotten to turn off the last robot, which dutifully continues to do its job. Wall-E's cheerful optimism makes the film's opening feel even darker. He has so much love to give but there's no one to receive it. That is until he encounters another robot, Eve, who's sent to earth to look for vegetation. The word-less love story between Wall-E (the humble garbage man) and Eve (the supermodel) is one of the most beautiful ideas I've ever witnessed on film. Wall-E is Chaplin-esque in its emotional purity and Keaton-esque in its nimbleness.
And sure the humans are boring and uninteresting but I think they were intended to be that way. Just as Ratatouille was about the universality of art, Wall-E is about its power and importance. Without art, passion and creativity, humans lose their humanity. Wall-E suggests that as we replace nature with technology, we also replace our souls and individuality with a hive-like mentality.
Moreover it's visually gorgeous. Pixar has launched some of the standout films of the past decade but none of them top Wall-E. Now let's be honest with ourselves, Wall-E isn't just one of the greatest animated films ever made, it's one of the greatest films, period. Who said popular films can't be art? Wall-E is magical.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I beleive that Wall-E is the best PIXAR movie i have ever seen. What can be better than a robot machine which have emotions? The movie also criticise heavily the fault of mankind:trash-splittering.If we continue to litter,we will be in the movie's scene one day.In the Axiom, everything is automatic but the machines there, besides EVE,have no emotions at all.Modern as they are, they only do the things they are meant to do,unlike Wall-E.Apart from being such a good movie,Wall- E is a meaningful one.In my opinion,it carries a message to human from PIXAR:If we continue to ruin nature,we will destroy our own home-The Earth. Wall-E is the captivating story of a clean up robot in the world of humanities waste, who comes across another robot: E.V.E, and together they both go through a touching journey full of discovery, and fun characters. Now right off the bat IWall-E is the captivating story of a clean up robot in the world of humanities waste, who comes across another robot: E.V.E, and together they both go through a touching journey full of discovery, and fun characters. Now right off the bat I love this movie, Why? Because it's not going to be preachy and talk about the unhealthy habits we humans have, like polluting the environment, are obsession with advancing technology, and our unhealthy lifestyle. Now just because a movie is not preachy about messages that are pretty important to teach does not mean it's an instant winner for everybody; the best example is the Metascore, critics like it, but some viewers opinions aren't interested in the truly deep themes or just simply don't care. Why did I give an 8? Well ultimately my opinion may not matter to most of you seeing in how I have no reasonable credibility that makes me any different than any other normal person who wants to talk about movies he/she likes. Now the movie itself is fun to watch all the way through, I say that because a majority of people like the first or second half of the movie. The first half is more deep with its subtle telling of what the world has become in the distant future. The great part of this is that it's mostly silent; with the exception of some noises from Wall-E and E.V.E and audio from video clips, and that it shows the disgusting world without saying anything about it. Now the second part is the two on the ship with the rest of the human population. Now this is fun for the funny moments, we have the introduction of M.O.E; a cleaning robot who follows Wall-E's trail to clean him, and finally the whereabouts of the rest of the humans. Before I talk about the second part, I should quickly talk about the main two characters: Wall-E and E.V.E. Wall-E is your typical cute character with a heart for learning and compassion. E.V.E is focused on completing her goals because of her programming, but eventually starts to develop feelings for Wall-E, and show that robots can change from their stereotypical notions. Now onward with the second part of this story. While I said it was fun with the characters and all, but the issue with this part is that it sort of contradicts the first part. In that the first part was serious with its subtle messages, but this is more focused on making the audience laugh and showing a good adventure instead of what it was originally going for. While I do agree with others may think of the two parts, I do think that they both are good, sure one may be better written than the other, but I enjoy them both. I enjoy this movie all they way through, it's full of heart, loving characters, very well written thematic elements, and is overall a fun adventure for all ages. Expand

Wall-E is even better than I remember it. Wall-E is an ingenious film that occurs thousands of years in the future. Humans no longer live on the Earth due to pollution, they instead live in a giant spaceship, called the Axim. The Wall-E robots are left at Earth to clean up the mess. All of the Wall-E's, however, have been wiped out over time. Only one remains. But when EVE, a robot from the Axim, comes to Earth to find life, Wall-E's life is flipped upside down. The first half-hour of the film is performed with minimal dialogue, but still mananges to express all kinds of emotion: Laughter, loneliness, perhaps even sadness. I cried multiple times throughout the film. The animation is gorgeous, even for today. And the musical score, composed by Thomas Newman, is excellent. There really isn't any sort of flaw to this film. It's entertaining, it's funny, it has a lot of heart, there's amazing animation, and an impressive musical score. Of course, I haven't even touched base on the best aspect of the film: the characters. Wall-E has, perhaps, some of the most memorable (and hilarious) characters in all Pixar history. From the quirky Wall-E, to the grumpy M-O, to the rotund captain of the Axim, there's an endless abundance of charming cast members. Wall-E is easily one of the greatest films ever made. Period. Wall-e and Eve try to learn each others names in 3 different scenes for 20 minutes each. Wall-e has a pet **** because the earth has obviously suffered a nuclear holocaust and the fat lazy humans have moved to space where their oversized hover-rounds really do hover. Welcome to Wall-e, a movie about the environment & 2 asexual pieces of machinery that are supposed to be in love. But it's hard to relate to an E.T.- rip-off-on-wheels and a poorly personified spaceship-looking robot that flies conveniently through space. Thats about it. I can't believe how many people raved about it. And "wall-e" was uttered no less than 300 times, just saying.

Some people think that the movie is about "the dangers of consumerism", but Director Andrew Stanton himself said that the real main point of the movie is love, and WALL-E is one of the most powerful love stories you will ever see. The movie has really cute lovable characters, stunningly beautiful music by Thomas Newman and Peter Gabriel, subtle humor, and tons of heart, soul, and emotion expressed with very little dialogue. The sort of love story between the robots was also really fun to watch and provided a perfect back story for the front theme of the discovery that the captain was going through. It's different and brilliant in every sense Expand

Awesome animation for adults, essentially. There were some children in the audience when I saw this and they weren't obviously getting it. Besides that and imho, best anim. movie ever.

WALL-E's powerful first halfWALL-E is a special kind of movie that is soaked in wit, a spirit of adventure and, rarest of all, sincerity. There is an innocent joy evident within this film of which theaters have not seen in quite some time. WALL-E's powerful first half involves little dialogue and though some may find it boring, the movie never loses sight of where its going and what it wants to be. The second half is more standard Pixar fare but is enhanced by the attachment we grow towards WALL-E early on in the movie. This movie does not try to dazzle us with special effects or perplex us with a complex plot. The animation, though amazing, and the plot, though interesting, never overtake the characters in terms of importance. Pixar' took two significant risks with this movie: taking a slow approach to the scenes on Earth and having a largely speechless main character. Both paid off handsomely making WALL-E an affecting and enthralling classic. Expand

This movie feels like the EPA trying to teach children how bad we are. An incredibly annoying movie. Making fun of individual people is okay to me but making fun of mankind? No I have to draw a line there.

Goes to show that you don't need characters to speak in order to make a classic. I haven't seen a robot as adorable as Wall-E since R2-D2 in the Star Wars movies.

The humans are wasting away their lives cruising in space without purpose or direction. Indeed, it is the robots who now enjoy the little wonders of life that once fascinated the humans. "Wall-E" is cute; kinda slow-paced, but definitely worth watching. It is an encouragement to start being curious like a child again. One might also find an urge to start recycling instead of trashing everything. Also very recommended is the Pixar short movie "Burn-E". Expand

Really, really boring. The only thing I can apppreciate is the enormous amount of work that goes into productions like this.
I fell asleep after seven minutes...

Alas, this is not the case and this film has to include some relevance to modern times and true narrative.
This film is 10/10 for me in the sections with only the robots. The sections with the humans are 6/10, which brings the score down for me.

Even though I was reeled in by the cute characters and the futuristic hi jinks, part of my mind was fixated on how the world turned to refuse and how everybody got so lazy and fat.

WALL-E is the greatest robot that I always trust. I love the setting of the story and I love the way that they use the idea to put on this post-apocalyptic world, when WALL-E is all by himself for 700 years ago without no people in the earth. The robot seeks another robot named EVE,with the kind of gentle ways that she's looking for the plant to come back to earth. And they both have connection to each other and they both fell in love with the ways that people do,not other robots that they could fell in love. The music gets chills in my ears and the animation is so beautiful. I love this movie and it's a masterpiece of the best animated film of the 2000's! Expand

There is virtually no dialogue for at least the first 15 minutes of the movie, yet the audience is suspended by the charm of a tiny little trash compacter, something that is unheard of in a modern kids movie (let alone a regular movie.) The film also contains an overt environmental message that probably wouldn't have been possible a few years ago. All in all, it's not Pixar's best, but it's still an enjoyable movie and a must see for the big screen because the visual environment is absolutely gorgeous. Expand

I was really surprised at the quality and depth of the movie. This is not your ordinary children's cartoon by any stretch of the imagination. This is a movie that Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke would enjoy.
