One that would really encapsulate and, more importantly, appreciate him for what he is; a dark, terrifying, and ultimately iconic piece of what "Spider-Man" means to so many. This is not that movie. Dear God is it not that movie. However, speaking as a Spidey fan who knows and loves what Venom means to him without needing the stylings of any movie adaptation to validate it, I had a good amount of fun with this. Let's not be mistaken, though -- this movie is supremely stupid. So many scenes of horrifically bad dialogue, plotting, and character work come to pass. But I was almost never bored by any of it. This is a deeply flawed, yet almost ceaselessly watchable mess of a movie with an undeniably odd, yet still fun central performance from Tom Hardy. I hesitate to say I want more of these. But I'll see 'em if they provide 'em. Expand

However, I gotta say that while it's no fault of Hardy's (he did the best with what he was given), the film ended up being pretty average to me overall, with mediocre effects during several moments, very rushed plotting and pacing, and a lot to be desired. Aside from Hardy's occasional charm and a decent amount of fun to be had with some of the action, it wasn't quite enough to make it as good as I was hoping it'd be. Expand

Overall a fun movie, a few tweaks would bump it up to a solid 8/10.

--vague spoilers ahead--
Venom follows the standard MCU origin story template, despite not being an MCU movie. You've got an intriguing scifi intro, a deadbeat protagonist, a girlfriend, a happening, the protagonist becomes super and wrestles with his new superness, the protagonist starts doing cool stuff, gets betrayed, has an epiphany, becomes a better person, and beats the bad guy. Oh, and the bad guy is essentially a clone of the protagonist, but EVIL!

The tone of the movie starts out as a pretty good sci-fi horror, but abruptly switches over to comedy half way through. This tone **** was very off putting, though the jokes were funny and got a few good chuckles from the theater. To improve the movie, I'd work harder at blending the comedy and horror elements. The effects and action scenes were thoroughly entertaining, better than the recent Ant Man movie IMO. The car stunts looked pretty real, and the fight choreography was fluid. The effects for venom were spot on.

Good CGI and Tom Hardy save the film but still, I just feel that great potential has been lost due to the bad directing and messy plot (writing). You don't have to be a genius director to know that some things just don't work for example mixing action and comedy works, action and thriller is also OK, but mixing thriller and comedy?! All in all I will just say this - if you don't expect too much of the movie, you will likely enjoy it. Expand

Ending was kind of predictable and the "boss fight" was done bad, speaking of bad, what is with the blue fire effect during car chase scene? Why his romantic motivations are so badly done? Why supporting cast is not caring about their job? As for Tom Hardy, he is a good actor and did fine.

The fact that they advertised Venom as “a movie with some scenes filmed with IMAX Cameras” then finding out there was nothing IMAX-related was a personal disappointment for me,especially as someone who loves whenever a movie makes advantage of new technologies for filmmaking.
Anyway, onto the review. Venom was better than I thought it was going to be. What a shock? Look,I have my own problems with the movie, and I don't think it's A good Superhero Movie, but for what it's worth,I had a decent time at the movies.
Starting with the good,I loved the relation between Eddie Brock and Venom (the black symbiote goo that, surprise surprise,is voiced by Tom Hardy!). It's probably the highlight of the movie and the only part (I think?) with some genuine laughs. The first 30/40 minutes of the movie were interesting to look at. It perfectly sets up Eddie Brock and his character, though sometimes it gets slow… The Special Effects definitely feel like something from 2000/mid90's,even if the Symbiote itself perfectly looks like it should, instead of a green giant monster with a face that looks like one of my classmates (yeah,I'm seeing you,Hulk 2003). And I wasn't bothered by the PG-13 rating,as I got what I wanted in the action scenes, oil splattery or not.
As I said, though, this movie is full-on corny and dumb,so you better think of what you're seeing before paying for the ticket. (IMAX or not) And speaking of IMAX,this is probably the worst IMAX DMR transfer I've seen this year,as the blacks of several shadows would become either Grey or dark colored, and the quality of the movie wasn't good at all (You can easily see some pixels at different moments). And for that,I wouldn't recommend the IMAX Experience of it (unless you want the full sound immersion,in that case go on). The rest of the characters are just thinly written and were just there as Plot Devices. The villain isn't really well-written and his motivations aren't really understandable. (Though it's a million times better than “bringing the dinosaurs back to Earth” from Jurassic Stink 2)
You know how much I like the fast and frenetic action, right? It's my kind of exciting and pumping action and I'll never get tired of it. But when the third act final battle goes on, everything about it is a mess. Sometimes I could see what was happening, but overall it’s a disaster of SEE-GEE and Editing (even worse than the entirety of Justice League). But in the end,Venom was just an okay time. I wasn't feeling mad watching it and I'm curious to see what happens next with this...sigh…”Sony Universe Of Marvel Properties”...seriously,who came up with that name?!?

A few scenes seemed like they were missing a lot of stuff, no really there was one scene that just stopped. None of the scenes had proper transitions. This could be the main reason that the pacing was awful as well. The pacing in this film was off for this type of movie. This is supposed to be an action-packed thrill ride but it’s just slow. Now the main villain is just so bland. He has no evil mastermind plan and doesn't even have a reason for doing what he does. He doesn’t act like a villain. Now the acting in this film wasn’t that bad but it just didn’t come across as people I want to root to win. One thing I look for in movies is character development and if the characters had any. This movie had very little to none. The final bad thing I want to talk about is the tone of the film. This film is PG, in Canada, and PG13, in USA, so they had to throw in some humour for the kids but when it doesn’t fit the tone of the movie, don’t. There were way too many forced jokes into this movie that was just out of place. Now the only good thing about this movie was the action shots. Once the action happened then that’s when I was fully invested in the movie. The action shots and the music that went with it was terrific. They looked well rehearsed and well shot and the editing on those scenes were spectacular. In the end, “Venom” was a slow movie that was only worth it for the action scenes and probably would have been better with an R rating. Expand

I liked Venom it was a fun, exciting time and if anyone hasn’t seen it they should go and watch it for themselves and come up with their own opinion of the movie.
Now what I liked MOST about Venom was not the action, nor the CGI or the Venom character itself but the way how the movie sets up the Eddie Brock character in the beginning of the movie and the world around him before the Venom craziness happens, now it’s nothing Oscar worthy like that but it was really well done and I always appreciate when Superhero movies builds up the character development of the main protagonist and this is the movie’s strength as it makes you sympathize and understand Eddie Brock’s character before the comic book stuff happens and y’all already know Tom Hardy brings his all to the role.
The supporting cast was also fine it was a small cast and it worked for the movie especially Michelle Williams who played Eddie’s girlfriend how was fine in the role and thankfully she wasn’t some damsel in distress and was significant to the story. The humour was also well done in the movie as the movie does a better job of handling humour better than most Marvel Studio movies as in no way did I feel that the humour was out of place at all and with the funniest character being Tom hardy as Eddie Brock’s encounters with the Venom symbiote at the beginning would make some funny interactions with other characters. The action was very fun especially with chase scene that would make the Mission impossible movies proud.

For the Venom character before I say anything else yes Tom hardy’s portrayal of Venom was better than Topher Grace’s performance in Spider-Man 3. Venom was awesome he looked great, the voice was also great, most of the action scenes involving Venom were exciting, brutal and fun and funny…yes funny. Also, the way how they explained the Symbiotes was fine with the movie explaining its origins, weaknesses and characteristics. Another very important this was that not once did I wish for Spider-Man to be in the movie (would have been awesome if he was in tin though) as the movie does a believable job of telling Venom’s story without Spider-Man and the movie was fine without the R-rating nuff said.

What I did like about the movie or the “bad thing” about Venom was mostly the third half I don’t know what happened but the last 40 minutes the movie was rushed had clunky action scenes and let me not get into the final battle or sequence of the movie cause it was just a big CGI mess with Venom vs Riot which was very hard to focus on especially with the movie being 3D,also some big plot holes involving characters happen and the villain…oh boy the villain, now Riz Ahmed who was the villain wasn’t the problem the movie was, Riz character Drake had an okay reason for being a villain but it was never expanded on and ended up being a generic villain and another forgettable Superhero movie villain and when he became Riot the other symbiote character(Venom’s enemy) it didn’t help as his interactions with Venom were cheesy as hell and again the action scenes were clunky and messy.
The second half wasn’t as nearly as good as the first half of the movie with very little down time as you are being thrust into action scene after action like a Michael Bay Transformers movie. The time management in the second half was messy and rushed to say the least. There was a very weird scene between Venom and Eddie that happened (you’ll know when you see it) and the story just wraps up outta nowhere as well.

So, to conclude Venom is a fun porn-corn movie with fun action scenes, good humour, a well-done performance by Tom Hardy, and cool end credit scene however the last third of the movie was rushed and clunky. As I said if you haven’t seen it yet go see it and come up with your own opinion.

Eddie Brock is a reporter tha likes to make questions that people don't like to answer, after some sequence of events one of those symbionts named Venom, ends up in his body and they start a strange adventure. Directed by Ruben Fleischer and written by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Kelly Marcel and Will Beall.
This movie started pretty well, they introduce Eddie, so as Annie in a way that you got to know both of them, at least enough, to we get to care for them and know what is going on in both of their lives. They did exemplified the work that Eddie did, showing some flashes of other jobs. The biggest problem with the story of this movie, is that they didn't presented the problem until the 3rd act, it felt like they didn't had anything to do until that point of the movie, and suddently someone that was making the movie said "damn, make this monster want to destroy the world now for no reason at all", it is this bad, it is that cliche situation that the villain simply wants to destroy the word just for the sake of it, the movie was being fun and stuff, just without a purpose, it was going in one direction and suddently became another, apparently just to have bigger and explosives action scenes. Action scenes that i liked it, the power of Venom is pretty nice to watch, they did some nice moments with him, a lot of adrenaline in this movie, just the fight among the symbionts in some moments didn't worked out, in some moments you just couldn't understand what was going on, but in general it was a lot of fun. The story does have one big plot twist for the character of Venom, that for me it didn't worked out at all, it was completely unnatural, for one moment to the other things completely change and not with a reasonable reason, it was like a click, in a matter of fact, the situation was more for that not happen, that didn't made much sense for me. Riot journey during this movie was bad, the lack of explanation in this movie really make things worst, things come out of nowhere and apparentely knowing everything. One thing that i found ridiculous, is that people are seeing something unbelievable for the first time, and they react to that like if it was something simple, it is so nonsense, people seeing a giantic monster for the first time and they act like it is just some car accident. There are some dialogues in this movie that was just sad.
Probably the biggest hit in this movie is the interaction between Eddie and Venom, it was good, it was definely very fun they talking to eachother.
Visually i really liked this movie, Venom cgi was very good, how he looks is dope and scary in a determined point of view, i think that they did got it right, the eyes, tongue and muscular grandiosity, that all combined with his voice, that is a 100% for me, it was great. There are some moments that Venom "skin", is bothered with something and it started moving, it is visually nice as well.
Tom Hardy did had some nice touches in this movie, he did a character that feel not very secure and use different tons of voice, he was definely funny, and in some moments a bit exaggerated during some moments in a way that wasn't pleasing anymore. Michelle Williams is here, she does convince in what she do, she feel concerned about Eddie and want to help, she have a confident way to look and say. Riz Ahmed portrays a cliche villain, that is just evil and think, or pretend, that he is helping the whole world, his acting is full of those faces and quotes, i don't think he did a bad job, just wasn't the best character. Jenny Slate is fun, everytime that she spoke was definely a nice momen, like some sort of relief.
The soundtrack of this movie is very nice, it is a subtle beat in some moments that it is definely very pleasant, and in other it gets into some agitated action thing, that it did combined with what was happening.
Venom is a very fun movie, the characters are nice, the action is fun and the movie is also very funny, but the story is a mess, but i definely did had a nice fun watching.

Despite Sony and Disney (via Marvel Studios) are currently sharing the movie rights of Spider-Man since 2016 after the poor performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which was supposed to start their own shared movie universe, Sony decided to establish their shared movie universe again, with this time using Spider-Man’s related characters without actually having Spider-Man’s involvement. With that, Venom is the first instalment in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters which features the anti-hero himself as title character.

Bio-engineering company, Life Foundation, discovers a comet covered with symbiotic lifeforms while exploring the space for new habitable world. After getting the sample from the comet and on their way back to Earth, their ship crashed in Sarawak, Malaysia. The company’s recovery team recovered three symbiote samples but the other one infects a human and got away. The company’s CEO, Carlton Drake (Ahmed), begin experimenting on the symbiote.

Eddie Brock (Hardy) is an investigative journalist in his own network, takes on a new assignment to interview Carlton Drake for some stories. While doing some research, he discovers a classified document about Drake’s unethical human trials from a computer which belongs to Ann Weying (Williams), his girlfriend, who works for Life Foundation as an attorney. During the interview, Eddie questioned Drake about the unethical human trials he conducted but he had the interview prematurely stop and thrown him out of the building.

Unable to back up his claims, Eddie’s career was ruined and Ann broke up with him after his actions caused her to lose her job. Six months later, a Life Foundation scientist approach Eddie about Drake’s human experiments and wants him to expose to the public. After helping Eddie broke into the company and taking photos of all the human experiments conducted by Drake, Eddie suddenly got infected by symbiote which gives him some kind of superpower.

Tom Hardy’s take on this incarnation of Venom is definitely better than Topher Grace’s Venom in Spider-Man 3. His acting and performance is very impressive and he really put some efforts to make his character live up to the role of the anti-hero character. However, I noticed sometimes his American accent is out of place. There are times his American accent sounds natural and other times is kind of odd. Nevertheless, it is not a big deal.

Regarding the tone of the movie, it’s very inconsistent which made me think whether this is a horror superhero movie like how the trailer was shown or a horror-comedy superhero movie. In addition, I felt Venom should have been an R-rated movie like Logan as PG-13 does not really suit the character and it really limits the character’s potential in the movie.

Compared to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Venom did not really put much focus on building the shared universe right away and instead focus on character development first. The mistake made by the previous movie was putting too much focus on building shared universe which affects the story.

As Sony’s next Marvel movie is Morbius the Living Vampire starring Jared Leto, the movie will have to depend on the box office performance in order to make it a success so that the next movie can go into production for the next instalment.

Venom is still quite an average movie. The plot is simple, the action scenes, graphics and special effects look good, and a couple of funny scenes with Tom Hardy remain in memory. I don’t know what else to expect from a movie with a PG-13 rating.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall? It's not the worst movie I've watched this year, but it'd definitely not the best.

Venom focuses on the connection between Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), a reporter who lost his job after asking controversial questions to Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) and Venom (Tom Hardy, CGI), a symbiote from another planet.

With heavy themes of human testing and manipulation, Carlton Drake (Villian) reminded me of the evil! Tony Stark that lives in hundreds of fanfictions littered across the internet. Incredibly intelligent and rich, yet striving for power rather than helping people.

The positives of this film:
- It was funny. There were moments where the action was minimal and the comedy took centre stage, and these were some of my favourite moments.
- The CGI wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. When reading other reviews, it seemed absolutely terrible and although there were moments when I winced, it wasn't too bad for a movie that's 80% CGI.
- I loved Tom Hardy in this. His 'I'm so done with this' attitude was a highlight of the film for me.

The Negatives of this film:
- Was I meant to be laughing when I was? I couldn't tell if the bits I found funny were meant to be serious.
- The music was jarring at moments. One particular part that stood out was when there was "sad" music playing loudly in the background near the end.
- Sometimes the CGI was a bit whack and over the top. It didn't ruin it for me, but I can see what people would be annoyed.

Considering this year is the year of superhero movies, I think Venom was unlucky to be released when it was. People's expectations were higher and thus ruined the film for them.

My advice? Give the movie a chance.

Imagine reading a book, you're digging it (for the most part), you get to the last few chapters and there are a bunch of pages torn out and it looks like a little kid scribbled over a lot of it, making it difficult to read. There's enough to get the overall point, but it's missing all the flavor.

That's pretty much how I feel about Venom.

Other than that, I liked Tom Hardy; I liked Eddie's story, I liked the "buddy cop" sort of take, loved the "Venom" action until the final battle and, of course, the Obligatory Cameo (some of you know what I mean). Also, exciting mid-credits.

But, damn, this movie could have used some much better editing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Although Venom is a short bit of fun, you probably will have little urge to ever watch it again.

The only real boons this movie has are Tom Hardy's wonderful performance, and a few great action scenes. Other than that, the supporting cast is dull and forgettable, and almost every line of dialogue feels as though it could be improved upon. The story is serviceable though, and did a much better job of making Venom a real character without the inclusion of spider-man than I thought it would.

If you are coming into this movie to see your favorite alien monster kick ass, you'll get your monies worth, if you can get past the sometimes under performing effects. There's something that just looks off about Venom in his full comic book appearance. The animation works fine, but I suspect the lighting and reflections on the completely shiny character was just a little too challenging for the studio to do flawlessly. The Symbiote effects on the other hand, are fantastic. Some great choreography, combined with Tom Hardy's physical acting make for the best scenes in the movie hands down. Action scenes that couldn't be done without the use of the unique superpower of the character are what make superhero movies come alive, and these scenes don't disappoint.

All in all, it's a film worth watching if you don't really care about a great script or the newest shiniest visual effects, and you just wanna watch Tom Hardy bounce off the walls and Venom kick a little ass. If that sounds stupid to you, then don't watch it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Venom, a movie that can not find its tone, one hour is Suspense, another hour is Comedy, the film leaves sharp that had many scenes cut, characters totally dismissable and with a villain generic, and the script, besides being generic, is very rushed, the scenes of fights are good, but the messy direction prevents us from enjoying it,and does not show anything beyond the seen in the trailers previously, the chase scenes are great and make you excited, Tom Hardy is very well in the movie, the relationship between Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote is very good and funny, when the movie ends you feel like seeing more of them two.
Venom is a very mediocre way to start a Shared Universe at the movies, but it's still fun.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was generally fun. There is a chemistry between Venom and Eddie, and that's the best part of the movie. Besides that, the story is not interesting due to one big reason: there are two main villains. Usually, movies focus on one antagonist to set up an interesting conflict between the good and bad. If the "bad guy" in the film has understandable reasons to do what he or she does, the movie gets better. In Venom, Drake shows up as the main villain of the story, and although his motivation is really a cliche, it is reasonable enough to make him a decent villain. However, he is not the only villain in the movie, we also have Riot, who doesn't really have a deep personality. He just wants to bring the other symbiotes to rule the Earth. After he takes over Drake at some point in the movie, Drake simply loses. All the setup that gives him a character is in vain, so anything that's interesting about the movie just vanishes. Thankfully, screentime was mostly spared for Eddie Brock and Venom, therefore it is possible to enjoy the movie. Expand

In many ways, this one is more of a drama than a regular, action filled superhero flick. Tom Hardy is great, as always, and Riz Ahmed makes for a great villain. The chemistry between Hardy and Michelle Williams is awkward at best and their relationship never really feels authentic. The script takes a lot of liberties and shortcuts with its source materiel, which makes it lose credibility. Additionally, it takes way too long to actually get going, with there being an unnecessary long build-up and all. Venom could have been another Deadpool, but that potential is totally wasted, unfortunately.

That being said, the action scenes are fine and the dualism between Eddie and Venom is the greatest thing about this film. The sole Eddie Brock parts are not that good, but the sole Venom parts are great. And as mentioned above, Hardy is all-around great in the role. He manages to be very funny as well, which is another good thing about this movie. Otherwise it feels kind of meh and never really develops into the great thing it could have been.

A few days before the premiere, the Internet was in turmoil,"Venom" is a film I've been planning to go to the cinema for a long time, the trailers bought me and although the character is not too complicated, I always liked it in any medium. A few days before the premiere, the Internet was in turmoil, among others, from a relatively low percentage collected from the review on Rotten Tomatoes. And although it gave me a negative attitude towards this production, I did not regret buying a ticket for the screening. I left the cinema room really positively surprised because the film was OKAY! Of course, it's stylistically sloppy, the first 10 minutes heralds a horror movie, then every now and then we jump from comedy to thriller and vice versa. These indecisiveness of the creators, what they actually want to shoot, hurts especially when both the film made completely seriously or with a pinch of humor would still be better than this mix, resulting mainly from the script "Venom" written by 4 people. Also, the leading actors, despite their potential, the roles of Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed are unused. Only Tom Hardy with his phenomenal acting really squeezes everything out of such an average written character. The biggest advantage of this creation is the comic relation between Eddie Brock and the symbiote, which, by the way, finally looks as it should, so I have no objections to special effects. I have them, however, about the lack of inspiration from the source material, i.e. comics. I'm a little tired of the fact that the thread of squeezing out Brock at the gym has been abandoned. I don't mind the distance from the classic plot with Spider-Man, but I would like at least one small easter egg referring to the hero.
To sum up, "Venom" is an interesting escape from MCU or DCEU films. So I'm giving the green light to projects of this type, where we're getting closer to a nemesis of popular heroes. So I am waiting for the solo positions telling the story of Morbius or the Joker.

As the trite plot continues, he becomes an ally with his final host (Tom Hardy). Hardy's an extremely talented actor, but the attempts at befuddled comedy aren't that strong (It's directed by Ruben Fleisher, best known for the very clever "Zombieland.") Instead of playing the hapless hero, he should probably stick to his more established brooding types. The action is the typically noisy, messy junk that populates this pix. The effects are decent, but nothing special. One of Marvel's misfires. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for an extended chase sequence from the upcoming animated Spiderman (which looked more promising than much of "Venom"). Expand

It shouldn't be this hard to make a superhero horror movie. We've had a few successes over the years with the likes of The Crow, Hellboy, and one or two others. Venom is more along the lines of Spawn though. Gets too caught up with humor. Even worse is that it fundamentally misunderstands the character.

I hear a lot of people criticizing this for being "tonally inconsistent." I don't really agree with that. To me it seemed like the tone was steadily focused on being lighthearted entertainment throughout. Just another product of the superhero craze. Which of course doesn't do the character justice. The reason so many were excited for a Venom movie was because he would bring something different to the table. A darker, villainous alternative to the MCU films. Instead we got something that tries to emulate the same kind of laughs and big-blockbuster thrills that Disney is using to conquer box-office sales multiple times per year with only the briefest, fleeting glimpses at the people-munching monster we were supposed to get. An approach that might not have been too bad had the movie been better made.

The action is pretty generic. We get a car chase and a bunch of guys with guns getting thrown around. Occasionally someone will get their head bitten off. Nothing too exciting. Even the big symbiote battle is kind of lame because of how blurry it all is. The CGI is really dodgy. Something is also off with Venom's design. His head is fine, but the body looks weird. Not a fan. His enemy "Riot" looks so much cooler. A foe who is brought to life by Riz Ahmed in a very memorable, charismatic, and arrogant performance.

There's never a dull moment though because things keep moving. Venom rushes from plot point to plot point so the time flies by. As a matter of a fact a meaty portion of it's 2h 20m running time is dedicated to the credits. Not the kind you sit through to see the stinger either. This naturally hurts the development of things a lot. Like how the symbiote goes from "I own you" to "you changed me" in the course of what feels like 20 minutes. There's a buddy element between Eddie and his extraterrestrial hanger-on that never feels fleshed out.

It's also never really explained how Eddie is able to keep the suit from killing him. I was able to intuit that he's protecting his body by keeping the symbiote fed or maybe Venom itself just decided to stop gradually feasting on his organs, but it's never something the movie addresses. It just stops being a danger to him at a some point. I also think it's odd how his fiancé immediately dumped him when she lost her job (was his fault) without any feeling. Just completely moved on with her life to the point where a mere six months later we learn that she's been seeing a guy long enough for him to have a key to her apartment. Maybe her and Eddie had some other problems, but it certainly didn't seem that way. Then we're supposed to believe she starts helping him when he gets the symbiote because she still cares for him a little? Uh honey, if you were capable of human emotions then you wouldn't have completely annihilated your relationship with him like you did. That's just cold. Why does he want her back again?

The biggest flaw with the movie though is that this isn't really Venom. I like how it portrayed the duality of the character. Both Eddie and Venom are in constant communication and have differing degrees of control. However their dynamic is far too cute. Silly buddy comedy stuff that's good for chuckles, but is a poor fit for the anti-hero. What the movie fails to understand is that Venom's appeal comes from more than his appearance. There's a tragedy to his story that made his rise from villain to sometimes hero so compelling. In the comics Brock was guy who thought he lost everything, but found out he had more to loose after bonding with an alien parasite. He thought it was great at first, but it took him down a dark path. Using his desire for revenge to manipulate him and gained control of his life. None of that is found here. The guy goes through some bad stuff, but then the symbiote comes along and makes it all better. Removing the danger of their pairing. Instead making it look like something you would want to do because you would quickly become best friends and get superpowers.

This is a waste of a great Tom Hardy performance. A mediocre superhero flick that I could have forgiven for only briefly touching on the body horror elements had it actually felt like a movie about Venom. I wasn't even bothered by the PG-13 rating because the character mattered more and it was totally possible to do him (them?) right without bloody violence. Instead they played it safe and made him your typical superhero. Surrounding him with predicable humor and action that is behind the standards set by the MCU. I was never bored so I can't say don't watch it, but the Venom fan in me was sorely disappointed.

Thus we get Venom,Sony may have finally agreed that the MCU can use Spider-man after failing to start up their Amazing Spider-man film series, but that doesn't mean that they can't keep milking their biggest cash cow in every way they can. Thus we get Venom, one of Spider-man's biggest enemies getting a new origin without Spider-man and a film franchise of his own. The end result is a strange mixture of dullness, weirdness and a few blushes of genuine fun scattered throughout. Set in San Francisco, the film stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, a journalist who is going after a man named Carlton (Riz Ahmed), a multi-billion dollar entrepreneur who is in on the verge of many breakthrough discoveries and is involved with several deaths. Whilst investigating one of his facilities, Eddie comes in to contact with one of the symbiotes that were brought to earth by one of Carlton's deep space discoveries. This symbiote then attaches itself to Eddie and creates Eddie's new personality called Venom.

Probably the biggest disappointment for anyone who's a fan of the comics will be that they never showed how the symbiote corrupts its host through its power. Even Spider-man 3, in spite of having one of the worst dance sequences put to film, still showed how the symbiote blended with Peter and was able to corrupt anyone it came into contact with. But in this film Venom and Brock live mostly in harmony, with Venom never really trying to take over and never actually doing anything evil either. Venom does still try to engage in a few horror elements, with the overall plot of the film resembling a classic monster movie formula and Venom's gothic design feeling like it's been ripped right from the pages of the comics. However, this does often lead to the film being tonally confused, with something that should be horrifying like Venom taking over another character and making them kill other humans for the first time is played up for laughs. Despite several moments clearly being cut out of the film, mostly as a result of Sony cutting out several darker moments to avoid an R rating, Venom does have a few creative action sequences earlier in the film. They take full advantage of Venom's powers, morphing and extending his arms in to various weapons. Unfortunately the actions sequences do seem to get worse as the film goes on, with a final battle between two symbiotes which ends up being the kind of computer generated mess that you would expect to see in a Transformers movie. Though the main driving force that gives this franchise some potential is Tom Hardy. Whilst he doesn't get the opportunity to show himself being slowly corrupted by the symbiote, it is great to see Hardy get a chance to stretch his comedic muscles, arguing with a character than nobody else can see like a psychotic version of Will Ferrell from Stranger than Fiction. Unfortunately outside of Venom there's not much for the supporting cast to work with. The villain played by Riz Ahmed feels just like any other crazed entrepreneur and whose motivations are never made clear. Also Eddie's ex-girlfriend is played by Michelle Williams, who does have some good chemistry with Tom Hardy but also has so little to do in the film that her role feels pointless. Overall, it's not the best set up for a franchise (which like every other superhero film already has an after credits scene already confirming a future sequel). There are a few things to work with through the fun dynamic between Eddie and Venom and the creative designs, but hopefully a future sequel will be able to develop Venom's character more effectively.

A lot of critics seem to either not read the source material or do research on the character before going in or are hardcore comic fans who will hate any changes. On the other side though, a lot of fanboys seem to just look at critics as snobby jerks who want all films to be masterpieces of art and will not even take their criticism or reasons as anything more than bias. Ironically, the fans seem more bias as they wanna just give this movie 10 scores just because Venom is in it. And that's what I hate most about this site over others sites like "OpenCritic". It's supposed to collect all the pros and cons from every review, but people just look at the scores and try to throw only 0's and 10's to manipulate the score. Just happy the user score is only a 6 because that's a more realistic score. Now with that rant out of the way, how is Venom?

Starting with the pros, the best thing to say about Venom is... well... Venom! Ya, I know, big shock, but Venom's sense of humor, powers, and chemistry with Tom Hardy's character are hard not to enjoy. Also, while I'm not a fan of the whimpy Eddie versus the more brute Eddie from the comics, I could feel for his character as he went through everything. Wrapping up the pros, the effects and CGI are pretty good most of the time.

Now while I said Venom is the best part of this movie, it does take nearly 30 minutes to an hour at most for Venom to even make an appearance so the whole first act is just following Eddie's life and man was it boring. I understand films have to establish characters and can't just throw things out at the start, but man did they take their time. It wouldn't be such a nitpick if the rest of the characters and the story weren't written so bland. Is it funny that Eddie has more chemistry with alien goo than he does with his girlfriend? And the villain is one of those generic evil corporate villains. Generic is a pretty good word to describe the whole movie. It's not laughably bad or embarrassingly made. It's just like so many other superhero movies (especially ones like Daredevil or Ghost Rider). It's got money and production behind it, but besides for a few neat moments with Venom, it doesn't do anything new. A lot of fans are giving this movie a pass just because Venom is in it, but if this was an entirely new character would you honestly care as much? With all the superhero movies coming out, you have to put some effort to make yours stand out and I don't believe Venom does. Maybe if they stuck with the R rating and a different script, we could have gotten something special. But instead, it pretty much follows all the tropes you'd expect. Everything in the final act felt rushed from Venom's motives changing last minute to the final fight between him and Riot. Maybe they shouldn't have taken their sweet ass time in the first act but instead focus more on Eddie and Venom learning to understand and work with each other or develop Riot or this evil corporate guy as better villains. Finally, as far as the action and humor, it's hit or miss. While a lot of Venom's line is pretty funny, there are some jokes like the scene with Eddie in a lobster tank that try so hard to get a laugh and go on for so long that it gets embarrassing. As for the action, there are some neat action sequences like Venom versing SWAT or the apartment fight, but there are also these awful fights and chase sequences. The final fight between Venom and Riot was just horrible and hard to watch between trying to tell the two giant dark symbiotes apart to the fast or rapid editing.

I know the cons section makes it look like I hate this movie. And I'll admit that I feel disappointed, but I won't say it's 33% on Rotten Tomatoes bad or "A turd on the screen." But anyone how gives this a 10 should seriously stop reviewing movies until you watch more of them. This site is for professional reviewers and the audience to express their own opinions on entertainment; not for all of us to spam 0's or 10's just because the majority doesn't agree with their opinion. But, those who do that will probably downvote this review anyway just because I didn't give the masterpiece that is Venom the 10 it "so strongly deserves." As for the movie, at the end of the day, I enjoyed the end credit clip of that animated Spider-Man movie more than this, but if you love this character, I see no harm in you seeing it. But only if you have deep respect for the character. Not the worst movie ever made, but one that will probably not leave much of an impact. I'd give it a 5.5 out of 10

Now if you wanna see a good movie about a "Tom Hardy like" guy who teams up with a thing inside him that lets him kick ass (good old R rated fashion), then watch Upgrade. You won't regret it.

A flawed, erratic film adaptation for one of the most famous, savage and finest Spider-Man villains.

In a world with too many superheroes, an anti-hero might be the most befitting antidote to fresh up the heroism-and-rightness-populated scene; as far as cinema is concerned, DC goes ahead of it, with "Suicide Squad" and "Watchmen" on opposite corners of the same ring. Marvel has followed much the same pattern, going through fire and water to conceive a new gem as piercing as original after bringing the Merc wi0th a Mouth to the big screen; alas, has made the same mistake of its top contender.

At the last minute, "Venom," which was supposed to keep going R-rated comic book adaptations, took a left turn, an utterly financial one, losing its primal R rating to drown in PG-13 waters. The film stumbles quick-fire, toning down material that must be naturally and strictly violent, extreme and frightening; the artistic vision opted to fall off from the original source in tone, becoming a mainly comedy amalgam lacking in visual appeal that if wasn't for the central figure's commitment, would easily have been on the darker side of the Marvel universe. After a hellish pre-production process, it's strange why Ruben Fleischer was the one to sit in the director's chair, a filmmaker renowned mainly for wisecracking "Zombieland." Marvel looking for new, fitting voices to take over its emblematic worlds is entirely understandable, however, it seems self-defeating to pick up a cinéaste who doesn't deeply know the company's storytelling-filmmaking dynamics. It's no surprise that Fleischer does a great job erecting a messy occasionally-watered-down buddy-comedy that shines by the symbiote-host duality employed incredibly halfway the running. The idea is hilarious off and on, aligning storytelling and performance organically, however, after Eddie comes to terms with the "parasite," this funny underpinning spreads out abruptly along the ham-fisted third act. On the contrary, superhero-action-wise, the filmmaker gets unmistakably lost in a disaster of plots, skipping from a breakup with Anne Weying to a "The Terminator"-esque body-hopping around the globe that reminds Disney Channel's "Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior." Poorly original and harshly introduced, such narrative threads run down the golden reputation the anti-hero has achieved in the comics pages along the years. By far it was clear this director wasn't a healthy choice for the character and yet Sony and Marvel refused to change its plans; we have now a Venom movie, a shonky superhero movie, and a good comedy at once, which, according to predictions, has put the worldwide box office on fire.

In a feature film that takes nearly forty minutes to land, the tone and pace are atrocious, yet there doesn't lie its greatest sin. "Venom" is on a knife-edge because of visual raucousness. With a hilariously bad CGI, the pictures, ironically composed by the very same cinematographer responsible for the dreamy urban landscapes from Bradley Cooper's Oscar-hungry "A Star Is Born," suffer from a serious on-screen incomprehensibility reinforced by an oversaturation of black at key moments. Matthew Libatique won't ever be a bad cinematographer, he's flat-out an artist, hence it's far-fetched to see these opaque, ghastly set-pieces, visually unappealing, scrambles of semi-liquid creatures fighting on the screen untidily. Hardy grinds away at his physical performance portraying both the Symbiote and Eddie Brock, two roles close to his career. The "Locke" actor endows the exact dose of charisma and intensity, leaning heavier on gags and one-liners than awardable dramatic explorations, still the firm pulse and commitment the actor adds the role makes the offering stronger. Don't be deceived, Sony is sliding us into a post-factual, misleading ground, it's crystal-clear Daniel Espinosa's "Life" is related to all this.

"Venom" by Ruben Fleischer is neither a rotten film nor the most outstanding comic book adaptation coming from Spider-Man Sony-Marvel deal; at heart, a messy buddy-film of great inner comedy scope that rarely dabs at the source material in tone and pace; in appearance, a long-drawn-out fandango of obscure frames and unintelligible action sequences that provides neither the theatrical drama nor the visual spectacle the most renowned Spider-Man villain deserves. With an unexpected, enticing post-credits cameo, a mightily effective soundtrack by Ludwig Göransson — going viral at the expense of Eminem, — brilliantly comical fitfully and celestially saved by Tom Hardy's talent, "Venom" will please stop-and-go cinemagoers and the most loyal but uncommitted aficionados. It is certainly far from being the comic book adaptation must-watch was meant to be; Sony and Marvel didn't fight the parasite off, we do.

This review contains spoilers.

Having seen Spiderman: Homecoming and Venom (plus the old Spiderman movies with Maguire and Garfield), I think Sony should never do a superhero movie again by themselves, and let Marvel handle that with some kind of deal.

Sure, the writers had to establish and humanize Eddie Brock's character so that the great Tom Hardy isn't reduced to just being a vessel for Venom to do his stuff, but the director took too much time to do it. In the movie's first half, Venom hasn't even bonded with Brock yet. Riot (the other symbiote) has less than 10 minutes of total screen-time. The final Venom-Riot clash is short but perfect for popcorn munching. There is a bit of humor and just the right amount of jokes here and there (nothing like recent Marvel movies which have become comedies), but the movie's plot is annoyingly bad, with plenty of stupid or nonsensical character decision-making. Some say that many violent scenes were removed so that this movie wouldn't be classified for adults only, it's stupid to do this in a post-Deadpool world.

Well, at least they teased Carnage for a potential Venom movie sequel, but Spiderman was nowhere to be found, not even as a cameo. Blame Sony for that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Venom. Another superhero movie or something more?

Despite the good play of Tom Hardy, who plays the role of journalist Eddie Brock and the symbiote itself, the picture and the concept of the film itself turned out to be a great picture, as the saying goes: "Neither fish nor meat." In general, the film is worth it to spend money, time and health on it, in the end, many people watch movies with popcorn or with other hazards. I was distracted, and now to the film itself ...

First, not by value, but what I would like to note is the excellent graphics component of the film. In the second trailer, a frank “draw” of the symbiote was visible, but by the time the movie was released in the cinema, the guys from Sony had fixed the flaws and in the cinema, the picture looked really amazing. Although, in the course of the film felt a certain decline. The last scene was unclear, where the background is just a black / dark blue color.

The second, perhaps, one of the most important is acting. I don’t want to dwell on minor characters, since they all have little screen time, except for Jenny Slate or Dora Skirt, who impressed me personally with the depth of feelings and sympathy for this character, which, unfortunately, was not sufficiently revealed. Well, let's move on to the main characters of the film ... We were very pleased with Tom Hardy, who was already mentioned by me at the beginning. A person familiar to us from Mad Max, Dark Knight or Stuart: Past Life played great. With each movement, he gave the film colors and emotions, excitement and empathy in his direction, which cannot be said about his love: Michelle Williams, who performed the role of Ann. Perhaps due to the fact that she was not given enough filmmaking or due to the fact that the subject does not suit her, she didn’t manage to empathize, the character seemed to be needed only for a clichéd situation: which you will see in the first 15 minutes of the film; only Venom's jokes that sounded in Eddie's head fixed the situation. In my opinion, her unexpected “friend” played much better: Dr. Den Lewis (Reid Scott in our world). The role of the main antagonist of the picture was ambiguous. Despite his inhuman acts and multi-billion state, in his head during the entire film, there was a thought that he was a loser. The villain in the role of Ahmed Riza could not create the proper tension, which is why the outcome of the film was read after the first 20-25 minutes.

So the third. Plot. I'd love to remove this item, but alas. The plot of this film does not cause any admiration. Rather clichéd, I would say not new, on the whole, already typical of superhero movies. The concept of the film seems to be forced; the first part of the film, which tells us about the background history of the main character, cannot boast of dynamism and deep interest, with the advent of Venom himself the situation changes dramatically. However, due to the long tie, the ending and the main part seem to be too fast. I would like to ask the director: where are the other 20 minutes of the film? Also worth mentioning is the undisclosedness of Venom itself. In the first meeting, he appears to us as an evil alien creature, eager to devour anything and anyone, including Ed, then sharply he becomes a good-natured person who wants to save the planet, even if at the cost of his life. (CAUTION! IT IS POSSIBLE TO VIEW AS A SPOILER !!!) Those who see a film can say: “he is not good, just here is a whole planet where he can eat one everything, and he will have to share a lot of others like him,” but then why is he ready to give his life? The evolution of this hero is unclear, which causes a huge pile of questions and very few answers.

Fourth - the soundtrack. In this part of the review, there is probably nothing to complain about. The music perfectly reveals the subject of the film, immersing the viewer into the world of cinema, from which you exit 10 minutes after leaving the hall. What to say? Marvel keeps the bar high, and their chosen Ludwig Goransson (God, forgive or correct if Göransson is right) deserves some applause. In conclusion, I want to say that the film was very ambiguous. Cinematography, graphics, humor, soundtrack and Tom’s game clearly speak in favor of the film, but the huge hole created by the poor plot and weak villain kills the film. The sharp change in the image of Venom strongly disappointed, in the end, it obeys Ed, and not vice versa, as it was in the beginning. Because of this, an interesting idea that could be developed along with the films was not implemented, we could not see the formation of the “personality” of the symbiote, but saw only the consequences of “education”. The picture is worth viewing, of course, but it will be impossible to revise it.

Honestly it should have skipped the whole first act. It was stuffed with nonsense and drama that had no emotional attachment because of awkward pacing either being rushed or taking to long to pay off. However when the title character shows up it definitely picks up the pace but its a disjointed and confusing ride from then on out. There are giant holes in some of the logic the characters use, and its hard to understand who knows what at any one point. To be fair I think the acting is fine, the action in the end is decent but where it shines is definitely the interaction between Eddie and Venom and thats where my biggest complaint comes from, it feels like there was 3 or 4 different movies in this film. "Venom" jumps around in tone and pacing like the screenwriter was on a pogo stick. Some cute romance, to a serious journalist trying to expose wrongdoing, to a sulking loser to, espionage, horror film, then full throttle action comedy. Which I think the latter, the film truly excelled at, if it had chosen a single genre to tell its story I think Sony would definitely be able to make a statement for a "venom" villain-verse. However they over extend and tried to mash every hero movie from a decade into one 90 minute PG-13 movie instead of taking a leap of faith with an R rating and making something truly special. Disappointed but enjoyed the 2nd half of the movie. Expand

It was okay... could have been so much better. Odd performance from Hardy surprisingly, and felt rushed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched Venom produced by Ruben Fleischer last week and I do think that this film is completely loss of time.
It is the same thing of all the others films of a superhero. He gets an overpowered super power, learns about it and uses it to save the city because a villain gets in the city.
There is a girl who the protagonist felt in love but they broke the relationship. Venom is the same thing of Dead Pool but is not fun and is not cool.
The first scene (before he gets the power) is 60% of the film and that does not make sense!
“Batman vs Superman” rewards you with a cool fight contrary of Venom witch hasn’t.

The movie was not too bad it had is fun moments. I think that they could have done more with the venom anti-hero version they tried to portrait. The movie felt rushed, and left a few plot holes. The villain was fairly bad. Still worth a watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A good popcorn movie, but a terrible one if you compare it to the other existing comic book movies.
