Venom is a bad movie with charm. If you can get over the corny acting and dry plot the movie oddly works well as a dark yet tame buddy comedy with some decent action sequences.

One thing is for certain - Venom LOOKS fantastic. The VFX are phenomenal. Tom Hardy plays both characters very well and it's good for a few cheap laughs. That's about all, though.

I enjoy some super hero type films but not all of them - I can appreciate any film with decent special effects (CGI) and so on and this film does feature some pretty impressive visual effects. The cast give pretty decent performances I suppose. Its a fairly entertaining watch, if a bit far fetched plot wise but then I suppose that's to be expected. I liked one plot element featuring the owner of a small store near where the main character lives. This is an ok film but not more, so I wouldn't entirely recommend it, no. Expand

This review contains spoilers. Overall? It's not the worst movie I've watched this year, but it'd definitely not the best.

Venom focuses on the connection between Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), a reporter who lost his job after asking controversial questions to Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) and Venom (Tom Hardy, CGI), a symbiote from another planet.

With heavy themes of human testing and manipulation, Carlton Drake (Villian) reminded me of the evil! Tony Stark that lives in hundreds of fanfictions littered across the internet. Incredibly intelligent and rich, yet striving for power rather than helping people.

The positives of this film:
- It was funny. There were moments where the action was minimal and the comedy took centre stage, and these were some of my favourite moments.
- The CGI wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. When reading other reviews, it seemed absolutely terrible and although there were moments when I winced, it wasn't too bad for a movie that's 80% CGI.
- I loved Tom Hardy in this. His 'I'm so done with this' attitude was a highlight of the film for me.

The Negatives of this film:
- Was I meant to be laughing when I was? I couldn't tell if the bits I found funny were meant to be serious.
- The music was jarring at moments. One particular part that stood out was when there was "sad" music playing loudly in the background near the end.
- Sometimes the CGI was a bit whack and over the top. It didn't ruin it for me, but I can see what people would be annoyed.

Considering this year is the year of superhero movies, I think Venom was unlucky to be released when it was. People's expectations were higher and thus ruined the film for them.

My advice? Give the movie a chance.

Its not as good as Aquaman or Wonder Woman but its better than Avengers Endgame and Captain Marvel. At least this movie isn't woke. But what really brought it down for me was Michelle Williams. I like her normally but she mailed in her performance here on this one. The only thing I laughed at was her relationship with Tom Hardy. They had zero chemistry. The plot was below average. But I liked how it ended and some of the scenes were cool. The coolest scene was when she was Venom and she started making out with Tom Hardy. It was weird but cool as f. Expand

A few days before the premiere, the Internet was in turmoil, among others, from a relatively low percentage collected from the review on Rotten Tomatoes. And although it gave me a negative attitude towards this production, I did not regret buying a ticket for the screening. I left the cinema room really positively surprised because the film was OKAY! Of course, it's stylistically sloppy, the first 10 minutes heralds a horror movie, then every now and then we jump from comedy to thriller and vice versa. These indecisiveness of the creators, what they actually want to shoot, hurts especially when both the film made completely seriously or with a pinch of humor would still be better than this mix, resulting mainly from the script "Venom" written by 4 people. Also, the leading actors, despite their potential, the roles of Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed are unused. Only Tom Hardy with his phenomenal acting really squeezes everything out of such an average written character. The biggest advantage of this creation is the comic relation between Eddie Brock and the symbiote, which, by the way, finally looks as it should, so I have no objections to special effects. I have them, however, about the lack of inspiration from the source material, i.e. comics. I'm a little tired of the fact that the thread of squeezing out Brock at the gym has been abandoned. I don't mind the distance from the classic plot with Spider-Man, but I would like at least one small easter egg referring to the hero.
To sum up, "Venom" is an interesting escape from MCU or DCEU films. So I'm giving the green light to projects of this type, where we're getting closer to a nemesis of popular heroes. So I am waiting for the solo positions telling the story of Morbius or the Joker.

In many ways, this one is more of a drama than a regular, action filled superhero flick. Tom Hardy is great, as always, and Riz Ahmed makes for a great villain. The chemistry between Hardy and Michelle Williams is awkward at best and their relationship never really feels authentic. The script takes a lot of liberties and shortcuts with its source materiel, which makes it lose credibility. Additionally, it takes way too long to actually get going, with there being an unnecessary long build-up and all. Venom could have been another Deadpool, but that potential is totally wasted, unfortunately.

That being said, the action scenes are fine and the dualism between Eddie and Venom is the greatest thing about this film. The sole Eddie Brock parts are not that good, but the sole Venom parts are great. And as mentioned above, Hardy is all-around great in the role. He manages to be very funny as well, which is another good thing about this movie. Otherwise it feels kind of meh and never really develops into the great thing it could have been.

The attempt to make a very free adaptation of "Venom: lethal protector" (a comic that in itself is only decent) does not work very well, because the funny personality of Venom does not work well with the set.

So, two Venoms (so far) and two not quite such good movies. But in comparison, this film’s just a bit better than Spider-Man 3 and the last time Venom graced our screens.

It was touch and go with this Venom as to whether I’d make it through the first fifteen minutes. Eddy’s interactions with his girlfriend were excruciating. Real fingernails on the chalkboard stuff. These two people were in love, apparently. If we needed reminding, ‘love’ in Hollywood is just a convenient plot point that allows for the thinnest of reasons ‘why’.

Moving on from the notion that movie characters should actually appear to represent what it is they’re trying to portray, which in this case was two people in love, the crux of the story, slimy old Venom himself, wasn’t too bad. One point was very confusing though, good Venom and bad Venom looked really similar. So, as is always the case with superhero movies, when the two faced-off at the end it wasn’t always apparent who I should have been rooting for.

Taking that idea a step further, I must say I didn’t really care if good Venom or bad Venom won the day. Tom Hardy’s performance as good Venom shifted between mostly irritating and vaguely likeable. Heavy handed exposition at the beginning of the movie went out of its way to beat us over the head with the notion that good Venom really was a decent guy. He helped homeless people, he was down with the local Asian shopkeeper. He had a heart of gold beneath that cloddish exterior, gawd bless ‘im.

Presenting the anti-hero as the hero is always a risky business, especially in this snowflake era of the masses only understanding clearly cut goodies and baddies. Hats off to Sony for having a stab at it, though of course $$$ were the motivating factor, rather than an admirable attempt at expanding the audiences’ understanding that there’s more than one story to tell.

Will there be another Venom? Dunno. Don’t care. This one was a ‘meh’ exercise in franchise building that fell a bit flat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was generally fun. There is a chemistry between Venom and Eddie, and that's the best part of the movie. Besides that, the story is not interesting due to one big reason: there are two main villains. Usually, movies focus on one antagonist to set up an interesting conflict between the good and bad. If the "bad guy" in the film has understandable reasons to do what he or she does, the movie gets better. In Venom, Drake shows up as the main villain of the story, and although his motivation is really a cliche, it is reasonable enough to make him a decent villain. However, he is not the only villain in the movie, we also have Riot, who doesn't really have a deep personality. He just wants to bring the other symbiotes to rule the Earth. After he takes over Drake at some point in the movie, Drake simply loses. All the setup that gives him a character is in vain, so anything that's interesting about the movie just vanishes. Thankfully, screentime was mostly spared for Eddie Brock and Venom, therefore it is possible to enjoy the movie. Expand

Venom is just defined by how boring and stale it is. Tom Hardy delivers a good performance with good back and forth with venom, but aside from that, this film offers minimal entertainment and creativity. 40/100

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A flawed, erratic film adaptation for one of the most famous, savage and finest Spider-Man villains.

In a world with too many superheroes, an anti-hero might be the most befitting antidote to fresh up the heroism-and-rightness-populated scene; as far as cinema is concerned, DC goes ahead of it, with "Suicide Squad" and "Watchmen" on opposite corners of the same ring. Marvel has followed much the same pattern, going through fire and water to conceive a new gem as piercing as original after bringing the Merc wi0th a Mouth to the big screen; alas, has made the same mistake of its top contender.

At the last minute, "Venom," which was supposed to keep going R-rated comic book adaptations, took a left turn, an utterly financial one, losing its primal R rating to drown in PG-13 waters. The film stumbles quick-fire, toning down material that must be naturally and strictly violent, extreme and frightening; the artistic vision opted to fall off from the original source in tone, becoming a mainly comedy amalgam lacking in visual appeal that if wasn't for the central figure's commitment, would easily have been on the darker side of the Marvel universe. After a hellish pre-production process, it's strange why Ruben Fleischer was the one to sit in the director's chair, a filmmaker renowned mainly for wisecracking "Zombieland." Marvel looking for new, fitting voices to take over its emblematic worlds is entirely understandable, however, it seems self-defeating to pick up a cinéaste who doesn't deeply know the company's storytelling-filmmaking dynamics. It's no surprise that Fleischer does a great job erecting a messy occasionally-watered-down buddy-comedy that shines by the symbiote-host duality employed incredibly halfway the running. The idea is hilarious off and on, aligning storytelling and performance organically, however, after Eddie comes to terms with the "parasite," this funny underpinning spreads out abruptly along the ham-fisted third act. On the contrary, superhero-action-wise, the filmmaker gets unmistakably lost in a disaster of plots, skipping from a breakup with Anne Weying to a "The Terminator"-esque body-hopping around the globe that reminds Disney Channel's "Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior." Poorly original and harshly introduced, such narrative threads run down the golden reputation the anti-hero has achieved in the comics pages along the years. By far it was clear this director wasn't a healthy choice for the character and yet Sony and Marvel refused to change its plans; we have now a Venom movie, a shonky superhero movie, and a good comedy at once, which, according to predictions, has put the worldwide box office on fire.

In a feature film that takes nearly forty minutes to land, the tone and pace are atrocious, yet there doesn't lie its greatest sin. "Venom" is on a knife-edge because of visual raucousness. With a hilariously bad CGI, the pictures, ironically composed by the very same cinematographer responsible for the dreamy urban landscapes from Bradley Cooper's Oscar-hungry "A Star Is Born," suffer from a serious on-screen incomprehensibility reinforced by an oversaturation of black at key moments. Matthew Libatique won't ever be a bad cinematographer, he's flat-out an artist, hence it's far-fetched to see these opaque, ghastly set-pieces, visually unappealing, scrambles of semi-liquid creatures fighting on the screen untidily. Hardy grinds away at his physical performance portraying both the Symbiote and Eddie Brock, two roles close to his career. The "Locke" actor endows the exact dose of charisma and intensity, leaning heavier on gags and one-liners than awardable dramatic explorations, still the firm pulse and commitment the actor adds the role makes the offering stronger. Don't be deceived, Sony is sliding us into a post-factual, misleading ground, it's crystal-clear Daniel Espinosa's "Life" is related to all this.

"Venom" by Ruben Fleischer is neither a rotten film nor the most outstanding comic book adaptation coming from Spider-Man Sony-Marvel deal; at heart, a messy buddy-film of great inner comedy scope that rarely dabs at the source material in tone and pace; in appearance, a long-drawn-out fandango of obscure frames and unintelligible action sequences that provides neither the theatrical drama nor the visual spectacle the most renowned Spider-Man villain deserves. With an unexpected, enticing post-credits cameo, a mightily effective soundtrack by Ludwig Göransson — going viral at the expense of Eminem, — brilliantly comical fitfully and celestially saved by Tom Hardy's talent, "Venom" will please stop-and-go cinemagoers and the most loyal but uncommitted aficionados. It is certainly far from being the comic book adaptation must-watch was meant to be; Sony and Marvel didn't fight the parasite off, we do.

Ahmed carries his weight well against him but sadly, His villain doesn't get that much screen time so it's hard to really establish him. The dark humour is solid, No objection to that. The action is really watered down to keep that PG-13 rating and I pray that the sequel is rated R. And I absolutely hate that it takes an entire hour for Venom to finally appear onscreen and 40 minutes after that, The movie is over. So you don't really get much there, Which is a shame because Brock/Venom is the best part of the movie. Overall, Venom is watchable but far from perfect and it should have been so much better than what it was. Expand

Venom is a very mediocre way to start a Shared Universe at the movies, but it's still fun.

A few scenes seemed like they were missing a lot of stuff, no really there was one scene that just stopped. None of the scenes had proper transitions. This could be the main reason that the pacing was awful as well. The pacing in this film was off for this type of movie. This is supposed to be an action-packed thrill ride but it’s just slow. Now the main villain is just so bland. He has no evil mastermind plan and doesn't even have a reason for doing what he does. He doesn’t act like a villain. Now the acting in this film wasn’t that bad but it just didn’t come across as people I want to root to win. One thing I look for in movies is character development and if the characters had any. This movie had very little to none. The final bad thing I want to talk about is the tone of the film. This film is PG, in Canada, and PG13, in USA, so they had to throw in some humour for the kids but when it doesn’t fit the tone of the movie, don’t. There were way too many forced jokes into this movie that was just out of place. Now the only good thing about this movie was the action shots. Once the action happened then that’s when I was fully invested in the movie. The action shots and the music that went with it was terrific. They looked well rehearsed and well shot and the editing on those scenes were spectacular. In the end, “Venom” was a slow movie that was only worth it for the action scenes and probably would have been better with an R rating. Expand

Eddie Brock is a reporter tha likes to make questions that people don't like to answer, after some sequence of events one of those symbionts named Venom, ends up in his body and they start a strange adventure. Directed by Ruben Fleischer and written by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Kelly Marcel and Will Beall.
This movie started pretty well, they introduce Eddie, so as Annie in a way that you got to know both of them, at least enough, to we get to care for them and know what is going on in both of their lives. They did exemplified the work that Eddie did, showing some flashes of other jobs. The biggest problem with the story of this movie, is that they didn't presented the problem until the 3rd act, it felt like they didn't had anything to do until that point of the movie, and suddently someone that was making the movie said "damn, make this monster want to destroy the world now for no reason at all", it is this bad, it is that cliche situation that the villain simply wants to destroy the word just for the sake of it, the movie was being fun and stuff, just without a purpose, it was going in one direction and suddently became another, apparently just to have bigger and explosives action scenes. Action scenes that i liked it, the power of Venom is pretty nice to watch, they did some nice moments with him, a lot of adrenaline in this movie, just the fight among the symbionts in some moments didn't worked out, in some moments you just couldn't understand what was going on, but in general it was a lot of fun. The story does have one big plot twist for the character of Venom, that for me it didn't worked out at all, it was completely unnatural, for one moment to the other things completely change and not with a reasonable reason, it was like a click, in a matter of fact, the situation was more for that not happen, that didn't made much sense for me. Riot journey during this movie was bad, the lack of explanation in this movie really make things worst, things come out of nowhere and apparentely knowing everything. One thing that i found ridiculous, is that people are seeing something unbelievable for the first time, and they react to that like if it was something simple, it is so nonsense, people seeing a giantic monster for the first time and they act like it is just some car accident. There are some dialogues in this movie that was just sad.
Probably the biggest hit in this movie is the interaction between Eddie and Venom, it was good, it was definely very fun they talking to eachother.
Visually i really liked this movie, Venom cgi was very good, how he looks is dope and scary in a determined point of view, i think that they did got it right, the eyes, tongue and muscular grandiosity, that all combined with his voice, that is a 100% for me, it was great. There are some moments that Venom "skin", is bothered with something and it started moving, it is visually nice as well.
Tom Hardy did had some nice touches in this movie, he did a character that feel not very secure and use different tons of voice, he was definely funny, and in some moments a bit exaggerated during some moments in a way that wasn't pleasing anymore. Michelle Williams is here, she does convince in what she do, she feel concerned about Eddie and want to help, she have a confident way to look and say. Riz Ahmed portrays a cliche villain, that is just evil and think, or pretend, that he is helping the whole world, his acting is full of those faces and quotes, i don't think he did a bad job, just wasn't the best character. Jenny Slate is fun, everytime that she spoke was definely a nice momen, like some sort of relief.
The soundtrack of this movie is very nice, it is a subtle beat in some moments that it is definely very pleasant, and in other it gets into some agitated action thing, that it did combined with what was happening.
Venom is a very fun movie, the characters are nice, the action is fun and the movie is also very funny, but the story is a mess, but i definely did had a nice fun watching.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched Venom produced by Ruben Fleischer last week and I do think that this film is completely loss of time.
It is the same thing of all the others films of a superhero. He gets an overpowered super power, learns about it and uses it to save the city because a villain gets in the city.
There is a girl who the protagonist felt in love but they broke the relationship. Venom is the same thing of Dead Pool but is not fun and is not cool.
The first scene (before he gets the power) is 60% of the film and that does not make sense!
“Batman vs Superman” rewards you with a cool fight contrary of Venom witch hasn’t.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

All the other performances feel empty but Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom made this film entertaining as hell. If viewed from a FILM-MAKING perspective, this film is really bad. It shouldn't be this hard to make a superhero horror movie. We've had a few successes over the years with the likes of The Crow, Hellboy, and one or two others. Venom is more along the lines of Spawn though. Gets too caught up with humor. Even worse is that it fundamentally misunderstands the character.

I hear a lot of people criticizing this for being "tonally inconsistent." I don't really agree with that. To me it seemed like the tone was steadily focused on being lighthearted entertainment throughout. Just another product of the superhero craze. Which of course doesn't do the character justice. The reason so many were excited for a Venom movie was because he would bring something different to the table. A darker, villainous alternative to the MCU films. Instead we got something that tries to emulate the same kind of laughs and big-blockbuster thrills that Disney is using to conquer box-office sales multiple times per year with only the briefest, fleeting glimpses at the people-munching monster we were supposed to get. An approach that might not have been too bad had the movie been better made.

The action is pretty generic. We get a car chase and a bunch of guys with guns getting thrown around. Occasionally someone will get their head bitten off. Nothing too exciting. Even the big symbiote battle is kind of lame because of how blurry it all is. The CGI is really dodgy. Something is also off with Venom's design. His head is fine, but the body looks weird. Not a fan. His enemy "Riot" looks so much cooler. A foe who is brought to life by Riz Ahmed in a very memorable, charismatic, and arrogant performance.

There's never a dull moment though because things keep moving. Venom rushes from plot point to plot point so the time flies by. As a matter of a fact a meaty portion of it's 2h 20m running time is dedicated to the credits. Not the kind you sit through to see the stinger either. This naturally hurts the development of things a lot. Like how the symbiote goes from "I own you" to "you changed me" in the course of what feels like 20 minutes. There's a buddy element between Eddie and his extraterrestrial hanger-on that never feels fleshed out.

It's also never really explained how Eddie is able to keep the suit from killing him. I was able to intuit that he's protecting his body by keeping the symbiote fed or maybe Venom itself just decided to stop gradually feasting on his organs, but it's never something the movie addresses. It just stops being a danger to him at a some point. I also think it's odd how his fiancé immediately dumped him when she lost her job (was his fault) without any feeling. Just completely moved on with her life to the point where a mere six months later we learn that she's been seeing a guy long enough for him to have a key to her apartment. Maybe her and Eddie had some other problems, but it certainly didn't seem that way. Then we're supposed to believe she starts helping him when he gets the symbiote because she still cares for him a little? Uh honey, if you were capable of human emotions then you wouldn't have completely annihilated your relationship with him like you did. That's just cold. Why does he want her back again?

The biggest flaw with the movie though is that this isn't really Venom. I like how it portrayed the duality of the character. Both Eddie and Venom are in constant communication and have differing degrees of control. However their dynamic is far too cute. Silly buddy comedy stuff that's good for chuckles, but is a poor fit for the anti-hero. What the movie fails to understand is that Venom's appeal comes from more than his appearance. There's a tragedy to his story that made his rise from villain to sometimes hero so compelling. In the comics Brock was guy who thought he lost everything, but found out he had more to loose after bonding with an alien parasite. He thought it was great at first, but it took him down a dark path. Using his desire for revenge to manipulate him and gained control of his life. None of that is found here. The guy goes through some bad stuff, but then the symbiote comes along and makes it all better. Removing the danger of their pairing. Instead making it look like something you would want to do because you would quickly become best friends and get superpowers.

This is a waste of a great Tom Hardy performance. A mediocre superhero flick that I could have forgiven for only briefly touching on the body horror elements had it actually felt like a movie about Venom. I wasn't even bothered by the PG-13 rating because the character mattered more and it was totally possible to do him (them?) right without bloody violence. Instead they played it safe and made him your typical superhero. Surrounding him with predicable humor and action that is behind the standards set by the MCU. I was never bored so I can't say don't watch it, but the Venom fan in me was sorely disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is bad, but it’s not ‘Suicide Squad’ bad or anything. People are saying that it feels like it belongs in the mid 2000’s. Yeah. I get Toby Maguire era Spider-Man vibes from this movie. But this is a much better portrayal of Venom than in ‘Spider-Man 3’’. While we’re talking positives, I think that Tom Hardy actually did a really great job with the character of Eddie Brock. He’s probably the best part of this movie. Venom himself looks pretty good. Also, I’ll just say it, I actually enjoyed some of this movie. Not ironically. I even laughed at a few of the jokes. But, I didn’t love it or anything. It was boring for 40 minutes, but 60 minutes were actually not torture. The other 12 minutes were the credits and the ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ clip after the credits. Obviously, Sony knew this was going to be bad, so they advertised a (hopefully) better movie at the end of it. The clip was pretty good. It was just the best. I have to talk about Woody Harrelson. He is in the movie, but he’s only in the mid credits scene. He has the stupidest, most distracting bright red wig on, and I laughed so hard in the theater. Woody Harrelson is the best, I love him, but I hate that he’s going to be in this movie’s sequel. Anyway, Eddie gets an interview with the character who I assume is a serial killer. He says some stuff, I don’t really remember specifics, but I remember his last line, which was something along the lines of ‘when I get out of here, I’m gonna create some carnage’. Why? Also, he wrote ‘Welcome Eddie’ in blood, but I don’t know where he get blood unless it was his own, which, if he where a serial killer, why would he want to hurt himself? It was a really stupid scene, but it does remind me a bit of the scene in the lobster restaurant. It was equal to the scene where Peter Parker was dancing in ‘Spider-Man 3’. Everything from the beginning to when Eddie gets Venom was just okay. Once Eddie actually got Venom, the movie goes insane and the true terribleness of this movie starts to become undeniable, and the problems just roll in. The biggest problem for me is the plot. I’m gonna do my best to explain the plot to you.

So, Eddie is this news reporter who’s doing really well and he’s (locally?) famous. He gets a big interview that could make or break his career, and then screws it all up. He gets fired, loses his girlfriend, and now Drake (I don’t remember if that’s even his name) knows Eddie’s name (this will make sense in a second). A little while later, we find out some exposition about the symbiotes. And then Eddie takes a dump in front of his door because his neighbor is playing rock music that’s waaaaaay too good (if you’ve seen the movie, you know what I’m talking about). Soon after, a science girl confronts Eddie and says, ‘expose Drake because he’s killing hobos’. Eddie says, f**k you’, or at least he would’ve if this was rated R. He waits a minute and then says ‘yeah, okay’. He goes into Drake’s testing lab thing and finds his homeless friend who gives him Venom. By the way, Venom is the best character right after Eddie. He’s a good tool for comedy. Anyway, Eddie tries multiple times to figure out what’s happening to him, but no one can figure it out until Venom reveals himself. And then, a bunch of stuff happens, Drake gets Riot, and Riot wants to kill Eddie, which he successfully does, causing me to feel nothing. Eddie dies only to be saved by Venom who sacrificed himself by being burnt as a parachute floating Eddie to safety, which is said to be one of his two weakness, and also Riot and Drake are dead. And then Venom’s just kind of not dead. This is not explained. The whole sacrifice thing was really stupid because, yes, Eddie was falling from a pretty high altitude, but he landed in water. Not only is Venom fine against water, which we saw an example of earlier in the movie, but that water would’ve put out the fire that was killing Venom. Why act like Venom is dead when there’s no possible way that Venom died? Was that explained in a deleted, of which there are 40 minutes worth? Probably. The movie ends with Stan Lee giving Eddie inspiration. Oh, and did I mention the part where Venom called Eddie a p***y. And that lobster scene, oh boy. Or even the part where the female love interest get Venom and we see a sexy Venom with boobs. A lot of weird things happen in this movie.

Also, I just wanted to mention the interview Tom Hardy did where he not only stated that 40 minutes was cut out of this movie (probably to make it PG-13), and those 40 minutes contained his favorite scenes of the movie. I feel bad for Tom Hardy because he signed up for a movie he was told was going to be R-rated, and since Tom Hardy signed onto it, it probably had a pretty great script, too. I personally would really love to see the R-rated 152 minute movie Tom Hardy originally signed on to.

The fact that they advertised Venom as “a movie with some scenes filmed with IMAX Cameras” then finding out there was nothing IMAX-related was a personal disappointment for me,especially as someone who loves whenever a movie makes advantage of new technologies for filmmaking.
Anyway, onto the review. Venom was better than I thought it was going to be. What a shock? Look,I have my own problems with the movie, and I don't think it's A good Superhero Movie, but for what it's worth,I had a decent time at the movies.
Starting with the good,I loved the relation between Eddie Brock and Venom (the black symbiote goo that, surprise surprise,is voiced by Tom Hardy!). It's probably the highlight of the movie and the only part (I think?) with some genuine laughs. The first 30/40 minutes of the movie were interesting to look at. It perfectly sets up Eddie Brock and his character, though sometimes it gets slow… The Special Effects definitely feel like something from 2000/mid90's,even if the Symbiote itself perfectly looks like it should, instead of a green giant monster with a face that looks like one of my classmates (yeah,I'm seeing you,Hulk 2003). And I wasn't bothered by the PG-13 rating,as I got what I wanted in the action scenes, oil splattery or not.
As I said, though, this movie is full-on corny and dumb,so you better think of what you're seeing before paying for the ticket. (IMAX or not) And speaking of IMAX,this is probably the worst IMAX DMR transfer I've seen this year,as the blacks of several shadows would become either Grey or dark colored, and the quality of the movie wasn't good at all (You can easily see some pixels at different moments). And for that,I wouldn't recommend the IMAX Experience of it (unless you want the full sound immersion,in that case go on). The rest of the characters are just thinly written and were just there as Plot Devices. The villain isn't really well-written and his motivations aren't really understandable. (Though it's a million times better than “bringing the dinosaurs back to Earth” from Jurassic Stink 2)
You know how much I like the fast and frenetic action, right? It's my kind of exciting and pumping action and I'll never get tired of it. But when the third act final battle goes on, everything about it is a mess. Sometimes I could see what was happening, but overall it’s a disaster of SEE-GEE and Editing (even worse than the entirety of Justice League). But in the end,Venom was just an okay time. I wasn't feeling mad watching it and I'm curious to see what happens next with this...sigh…”Sony Universe Of Marvel Properties”...seriously,who came up with that name?!?

Despite Sony and Disney (via Marvel Studios) are currently sharing the movie rights of Spider-Man since 2016 after the poor performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which was supposed to start their own shared movie universe, Sony decided to establish their shared movie universe again, with this time using Spider-Man’s related characters without actually having Spider-Man’s involvement. With that, Venom is the first instalment in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters which features the anti-hero himself as title character.

Bio-engineering company, Life Foundation, discovers a comet covered with symbiotic lifeforms while exploring the space for new habitable world. After getting the sample from the comet and on their way back to Earth, their ship crashed in Sarawak, Malaysia. The company’s recovery team recovered three symbiote samples but the other one infects a human and got away. The company’s CEO, Carlton Drake (Ahmed), begin experimenting on the symbiote.

Eddie Brock (Hardy) is an investigative journalist in his own network, takes on a new assignment to interview Carlton Drake for some stories. While doing some research, he discovers a classified document about Drake’s unethical human trials from a computer which belongs to Ann Weying (Williams), his girlfriend, who works for Life Foundation as an attorney. During the interview, Eddie questioned Drake about the unethical human trials he conducted but he had the interview prematurely stop and thrown him out of the building.

Unable to back up his claims, Eddie’s career was ruined and Ann broke up with him after his actions caused her to lose her job. Six months later, a Life Foundation scientist approach Eddie about Drake’s human experiments and wants him to expose to the public. After helping Eddie broke into the company and taking photos of all the human experiments conducted by Drake, Eddie suddenly got infected by symbiote which gives him some kind of superpower.

Tom Hardy’s take on this incarnation of Venom is definitely better than Topher Grace’s Venom in Spider-Man 3. His acting and performance is very impressive and he really put some efforts to make his character live up to the role of the anti-hero character. However, I noticed sometimes his American accent is out of place. There are times his American accent sounds natural and other times is kind of odd. Nevertheless, it is not a big deal.

Regarding the tone of the movie, it’s very inconsistent which made me think whether this is a horror superhero movie like how the trailer was shown or a horror-comedy superhero movie. In addition, I felt Venom should have been an R-rated movie like Logan as PG-13 does not really suit the character and it really limits the character’s potential in the movie.

Compared to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Venom did not really put much focus on building the shared universe right away and instead focus on character development first. The mistake made by the previous movie was putting too much focus on building shared universe which affects the story.

As Sony’s next Marvel movie is Morbius the Living Vampire starring Jared Leto, the movie will have to depend on the box office performance in order to make it a success so that the next movie can go into production for the next instalment.

As a superhero (or should I say, anti-hero) movie, Venom is quite unremarkable. Having seen Spiderman: Homecoming and Venom (plus the old Spiderman movies with Maguire and Garfield), I think Sony should never do a superhero movie again by themselves, and let Marvel handle that with some kind of deal.

Sure, the writers had to establish and humanize Eddie Brock's character so that the great Tom Hardy isn't reduced to just being a vessel for Venom to do his stuff, but the director took too much time to do it. In the movie's first half, Venom hasn't even bonded with Brock yet. Riot (the other symbiote) has less than 10 minutes of total screen-time. The final Venom-Riot clash is short but perfect for popcorn munching. There is a bit of humor and just the right amount of jokes here and there (nothing like recent Marvel movies which have become comedies), but the movie's plot is annoyingly bad, with plenty of stupid or nonsensical character decision-making. Some say that many violent scenes were removed so that this movie wouldn't be classified for adults only, it's stupid to do this in a post-Deadpool world.

Well, at least they teased Carnage for a potential Venom movie sequel, but Spiderman was nowhere to be found, not even as a cameo. Blame Sony for that.

Although Venom is a short bit of fun, you probably will have little urge to ever watch it again.

The only real boons this movie has are Tom Hardy's wonderful performance, and a few great action scenes. Other than that, the supporting cast is dull and forgettable, and almost every line of dialogue feels as though it could be improved upon. The story is serviceable though, and did a much better job of making Venom a real character without the inclusion of spider-man than I thought it would.

If you are coming into this movie to see your favorite alien monster kick ass, you'll get your monies worth, if you can get past the sometimes under performing effects. There's something that just looks off about Venom in his full comic book appearance. The animation works fine, but I suspect the lighting and reflections on the completely shiny character was just a little too challenging for the studio to do flawlessly. The Symbiote effects on the other hand, are fantastic. Some great choreography, combined with Tom Hardy's physical acting make for the best scenes in the movie hands down. Action scenes that couldn't be done without the use of the unique superpower of the character are what make superhero movies come alive, and these scenes don't disappoint.

All in all, it's a film worth watching if you don't really care about a great script or the newest shiniest visual effects, and you just wanna watch Tom Hardy bounce off the walls and Venom kick a little ass. If that sounds stupid to you, then don't watch it.

Although he posses extreme powers, he's not exactly a superhero. Actually, he starts as a villain…an aggressive goo from outer space that absorbs into a human's body. As the trite plot continues, he becomes an ally with his final host (Tom Hardy). Hardy's an extremely talented actor, but the attempts at befuddled comedy aren't that strong (It's directed by Ruben Fleisher, best known for the very clever "Zombieland.") Instead of playing the hapless hero, he should probably stick to his more established brooding types. The action is the typically noisy, messy junk that populates this pix. The effects are decent, but nothing special. One of Marvel's misfires. NOTE: Stay thru the credits for an extended chase sequence from the upcoming animated Spiderman (which looked more promising than much of "Venom"). Expand

It's a shame that great actors like Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed & Michelle Williams were given poor lines & very little to work with. It sometimes felt like they weren't all on the same page with what kind of movie they were in.
