It's perverted, with characters having constantly shifting personalities, communist and tribal systems being glorified, weird sexualisations in a film that only 8 year old and below might enjoy ( but will end up being messed up afterwards), and huge ecological bend. And I actually liked some bits in it, and really tired to like it because of visuals and actors in it, but I just wanted it to end. Really sorry to say this but it's utter crap. Expand

On a rarement vu autant d'effets spéciaux si judicieusement utilisés.

Really cool movie. The story is simple to follow and interesting, the atmosphere and graphics are awesome. It's also lighthearted and doesn't take itself too seriously which makes it easy to watch. Absolutely recommended.

The film is visually stunning and full of surprising twists and turns. Above all, it is peppered with a lot of humor and great ideas. Every scene, every minute is a feast for the eyes and simply beautiful to look at! Above all, the performances of the protagonists convince with their simplicity and elegance. It is actually a well-crafted beautiful and dynamic love story of Major Valerian, skillfully played by Dane DeHaan and the lovely Sergeant Laureline played by the beautiful and gorgeous Cara Jocelyn Delevingne. The CGI's are in the upper area. The story is well thought out and masterfully executed on screen. Particularly noteworthy is the guest appearance of Rihanna, Rutger Hauer, one of the great actors of our time, who has unfortunately passed away and Ethan Hawke. Awesome! I've watched the movie 4 times and I'm always amazed at how well done it is! BRAVO LUC BESSON! BRAVO! Expand

The story takes place in the 28th century, where the International Space Station has been relocated and renamed Alpha, a city of a thousand planets with a diverse array of species and knowledge from across the galaxy. The main characters, Major Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and his partner Laureline (Cara Delevingne), are tasked with saving Alpha from an unknown threat while also retrieving the last surviving "Converter" from the doomed planet of Mül. The film boasts stunning visuals and make-up, with a Star Wars and The Fifth Element influence. However, the film suffers from poor dialogue, inconsistent pacing, and uninteresting story choices. The performances by the lead actors, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, are underwhelming, lacking charisma and chemistry. Overall, while "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" may be a feast for the eyes, it falls short in storytelling and character development.
____________________________________

This is not a movie made by the same Luc Besson that made some of my all time favorite movies back in the 1990's, but it is still an enjoyable experience that is really aimed at a pre-teen audience. If for nothing else, watch the scene at the beginning where they are growing the space station. Without a single word of dialog, that scene tells an incredibly inspiring story. I like that the rest of the movie tried, I just don't think it ever achieved much. I probably would have been willing to knock the grade up a notch if only the two leads had some chemistry. I give it a C, if you've already seen the best, but you insist on watching a movie, try this one out. Expand

It's beautiful. It's very beautiful. Some of the visuals are even breathtaking.

That's it. There's nothing else to the movie. The script and dialogue are physically painful to endure. The actors did what they could but there was nothing to work with. Very uneven. Difficult to tell what was supposed to be funny vs serious b/c it was just so poorly conceived and executed. I have a hunch that a lot of the dialogue was intended to be funny. It's an utter failure. So much money and time and energy went into making this movie, and for what? Our world is absurd.

This film is like Michael J. Fox meets Indiana Jones in a galaxy far far away and in the process outdoes Star Wars and Star Trek both on practically every conceivable level by at least several orders of magnitude.

Yes, it's a comic action-adventure flick so if there are any Oscars to be won they will be in the realm of stunning visuals, of which there are plenty. We have landscapes unlike any other. We have aliens who bear no resemblance to cuddly stuffies and action figures to be found in toy store chains. We have absolutely NO robots attempting to provide comic relief. And we have Valerian and Laureline, billed as soldiers but handling missions more like agents, trading wisecracks and innuendos and the occasional contemplative remark about the meaning of life and the nature of the universe.

The criticism of the film merely confirms my general opinion of the modern movie audience. People say that the two leads lack characterization and chemistry and these same people will heap praises on Bourne and Wick and every other two-dimensional pot of offal being churned out endlessly by Disney and the rest of the industry. They'll say the dialog is stilted and nonsensical and then applaud films where there are two lines of dialog, primarily grunts, for every twenty minutes of blasting machine-guns and fiery explosions.

Valerian and the City of of a Thousand Planets is a very entertaining film. It's fun. It's a bit of a thrill ride. It does a few things I haven't seen before. I absolutely recommend that you give it a watch.

While Luc Besson brings so much energy to action scenes and even throwaway establishing shots, he's never mastered the art of directing (American or English) actors. And the two leads here, Dehaan and Delevigne, are doing their best but are just woefully miscast. But the final nail in this coffin is the story, which is too unfocused and simple to garner much interest even as the universe it's set in demands attention. Worth a rental but unfortunately very forgettable. Expand

Rip away the charm of practical effects, run it through autotune, and ramp up the pacing to ensure that none of the story beats can land, and you have some approximation of this bloodless avalanche of screen clutter.

When the first non-CGI characters exchanged a few lines, I wondered aloud whether it was dubbed. The actor in the titular role got stuck in a permanent Keanu impression, and the lead actress seemed likewise preoccupied with the mechanics of speech itself at the expense of expressiveness.

An actor mandated by the Chinese government mediates the frequent bouts of exposition this movie requires, conveying the competence and good will of the People's Republic.

There is a romantic plot thread that I can only describe in terms of my relief when another part of the story interceded.

That's the movie.

Somehow, the writers got everything wrong about how to write a decent plot. The characters are bland, cringe-inducing, and one-dimensional--especially the hero, Valerian. And the entire story sounds all too familiar with its tropes. The story is utterly empty. You would think there's no hope, that there's nothing we can salvage. But that's not quite the case. This film's visuals are stunning. Straight from the opening scene, alien worlds jump at us in vibrant colors and in creative environments. The scenes throughout the film continue to prove to be spectacles worth watching. But is the movie worth any more than its visuals and audio? Probably not. Expand

It gets an 8 or higher for the awesome freaking world building, the beautiful aliens, it's everything that The Last Jedi wishes it could have been. The two main characters show that tension between "men and women" dominance that pervades politics and something that The Last Jedi totally FAILED at making interesting. This movie was awesome. It did the whole "military complex" thing that TLJ tried and it succeeded. Just about in every category it was better than TLJ. Normally it is a good thing to follow user reviews instead of critics. After having been disappointed with a lot of movies lately (star wars last jedi, guardians of the galaxy vol. 2), this movie is absolute great entertainment. Don't take the movie too seriously (it doesn't take itself too seriously) and you will be in for a good 2 hours. I don't get why star wars the last jedi gets 85 from critics (4.6 from users) and this one 51 (and 6.4 from users). Similar stuff on rotten tomatoes.

The main guy character is not likeable and frankly, a bit dumb. But I think the director is playing with clichées here and I am astonished that the critics didn't get that.

The main plot and what humanity is capable off has still some message. Read Ender series for more similar stuff.

The CGi tech/ Art Style/ environment : Impressive and remarkable, seems like the movie had took inspiration from Mass Effect series, especially the space suit outfits.

Actors performance : the arent the best, but still good acting overall, not much to complaint, and i was captivated by Cara Delevingne, and Dane was quite handsome and charming despite looked smaller size.

Colourful sci-fi, such a refreshing change from that dull pompous Star Wars stuff, which seems to be flavour of the month at the moment with critics and audiences who believe the force actually exists.

If you liked The Fifth Element, you’ll get this movie. What’s being said here is that space is big, there’s lots of stuff in it, and that stuff’s a mish-mash of all our imaginations squashed together. Ok, so some of what’s up on the screen here isn’t all that original, I’m looking at you endangered aliens, who are a cross between the blue monkeys of Avatar and the six-limbed what-nots from John Carter.

But there’s enough stuff that is the movie’s own creation to keep the visuals fresh and the action engaging. Having said that, Valerian’s accent (Keanu Reeves straight out of Bill & Ted) constantly distracted me, but not to the point that I couldn’t appreciate Cara Delevingne’s genuine star quality.

If you like your sci-fi on the imaginative side, and coloured with a pallet that’s more than 50 shades of grey, rent this film, today.

I'd watched it the second time to check my feelings - everything's OK with the movie, something's wrong with the people. You know, the same people who give "Valerian" lowest grades on the reason that movie's plot is not enough cohesive and actors are not good enough, gives "10" to "Noah" and "Jupiter Ascending"! The same people who give "Valerian" lowest grade on the base that its plot is poorly written, highly appreciate "Jurassic World". People who hate "Valerian" for the reason that its story is underwhelming, give "9" to 'Spider-Man: Homecoming". People who call it "an epic pile of crap" appreciate instead "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Fantastic Beasts"... And so on! It has no meaning, no logic, no sense at all! It's a pure hatred, nothing more, and I ask why?!!Why as soon as something outstanding and worth mentioning appears in the mainstream, there emerges a hoard of detractors who instantly begin slinging mud at it? Yes, it's a pure entertainment but it's absolutely good as an entertainment. You know, it's not about CGIs, it's all about talent and imagination and how we use them. What does it teach us? To enjoy and value the life, of course, what else? I truly liked it and I sincerely thank Luc Besson for making a good engaging movie where he somehow contrived to avoid some standard stale and hollow issues that now seem almost unavoidable, e.g.: social and family values theme, clerical propaganda, good people organizing for the struggle against bad authorities, hyper-muscled superheroes saving the world, super-villains with super-powers, static talking heads lost in endless dialogs intended to somehow patch holes in a plot etc. And my special thanks to Luc for engaging for the leading roles actors, not "stars"! You know, not Tom Cruise or something of that kind! 7.5/10 Expand

Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets is perhaps the greatest example of style over substance in modern film history.

Luc Besson is such a huge fan of the comic book source material he has worked tirelessly to bring the film to the big screen, seeking funding from multiple independent bodies to make it the most expensive indie movie of all time. Unfortunately for the director, the end result is an absolute mess.

The film starts with a spectacular montage telling 400 years of exposition as the titular city slowly grows from an Earth space station. Soundtracked by David Bowie’s Space Oddity, this is by far the best sequence of the film. Unfortunately, it’s all down hill from there.

Despite some genuinely great visual artistry, Valerian is spoiled by stilted dialogue, a meandering plot and two horribly miscast leads.

It’s hard to think of an on-screen couple with less chemistry than Dane DaHaan and Cara Delevingne as Valerian and Laureline.

After the initial exposition of the opening scenes, it is their relationship that is the key focus of the film, with the plot very much secondary.

Unfortunately, the pair have no spark whatsoever and just sort of say their lines at each other in wooden, bland exchanges that are often cringe worthy and painful to watch.

Dane DeHann can be good, his performance in Chronicle gave us a glimpse at a realistic super-villain origin story, and for the first half of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 he made a pretty credible Harry Osborne. Here though it becomes clear that ‘swash-buckling, womanising, space agent’ is not in his repertoire. The actor is just lacking that elusive quality that you can’t really teach — charisma.

Delevingne is another story all together. At this point I’ve seen two of her cinematic outings — last year’s Suicide Squad and now Valerian. So for me, she is two for two in terms of god awful, wooden and almost film killing performances. It’s hard to get into specifics but from what I can tell she doesn’t seem to get how ‘acting’ works beyond wearing the clothes she’s told to wear and saying the words she’s told to say. As I said though, I haven’t seen Paper Towns for all I know she could be great, judging by Valerian though, it doesn’t look likely.

As the film moves on the plot about the wrongful near extinction of a species fades into the background. When it does resurface the plotting and painfully basic dialogue can barely keep it chugging along. For the most part though, the film is concerned with Valerian and Laureline and how much they care about each other/work well together/should be a couple etc. none of which works due to the aforementioned lack of chemistry.

Ultimately Valerian comes across as a poor man’s Guardians of the Galaxy and essentially shows us what might have been given some alternative casting. The reason both Guardians films work so well is the interplay between the characters, without that the films would have just been a mixture of bright colours and fun noises, and that is basically what Valerian has ended up as.

Even the visual flare of the earlier scenes gives way about half way through proceedings. After setting up a huge universe full of different species and alien environments, Besson for some reason decides we should spend the back half in the dimly lit sewers and underbelly of ‘The City of A Thousand Planets’.

The final nails in the coffin are a couple of bizarre cameo appearances from Rihanna and Ethan Hawke (what are you doing?)

I would say Rihanna’s inclusion drags the film down but the leads are already doing a pretty good job of that themselves. Instead, her section is another speed bump in a film that makes 2 hours and change feel like an eternity.

By the time the final battle gets going, we’re all past the point of caring and no amount of laser gun fights and killer robots can save us (and they usually save everything).

I’m sure Valerian will have its supporters from its pre-existing fan base, but the terrible casting accompanied by a script that has clearly been written by someone without a full grasp of the English language means it has ended up as a convoluted mess without enough flair or imagination to make it worthwhile.

There is something to be said for films that are ‘so bad they’re good’ (see my Fast and Furious 8 review for further details). Valerian, however, is just plain bad. Maybe it will become a cult classic in the future, ultimately though the film will always go down as a missed opportunity. If, for whatever reason, you do end up watching it, I have one piece of advice — in your head recast Dane DeHann and Cara Delevingne with Tom Hiddleston and Emma Stone. Better isn’t it?

After reading the critic reviews which I'm beginning to realize can be totally wrong, I skipped the movie at the theaters and waited for it to come out on Blu-ray. Unfortunately, the US didn't get a 3d version and I had to watch it in 2d. Still this is a very interesting scifi movie and it does do a fine job of bringing to life a comic book. I loved the visuals and the story was fine by me. The most telling sign of all was that my son who had played soccer the whole day wanted to watch the whole thing even though he was exhausted:-)

Could it have been epic or better? Absolutely! The main issue I had was with the actors and particularly the main actor - this was not the right casting choice. He doesn't seem happy and he can't play smug either. Besson is a master at picking good actors for roles which is very surprising to see him fail in that regard here.

If you look at the Professional, Luc Besson brought us Natalie Portman, Jean Reno and Gary Oldman.

In the 5th Element or the Professional, he brought us Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich and Chris Tucker.

I think if he had picked better actors with better chemistry, this movie would have been much better.

Other than that, the movie was beautiful and fun to watch.

Unfortunately most of the movie is cringeworthy, firstly you are expected to believe a couple of wimpy high-school kids are super tough intergalactic heroes. Quite why they have teens piloting the spaceships, and a whole galaxy depending on them, when a whole host of better suited people are around them is never explained. Then you are also expected to believe that the lead actor is some sort of lothario, and that his partner is besotted with him, but they both are completely wooden and there is no chemistry between them. The story then muddles around for a bit without purpose and Rhianna pops up for a cameo appearance to plug a song in a sequence that should have been left on the cutting room floor. The final act has no surprises and you can see what is coming from a mile off, it ends with a bizarre conclusion, and the fakest most unconvincing love scene I've ever seen in a film. Cara Delevingne rolls her eyes and acts bratish a lot and Dane DeHaan very unconvincingly plays the tough guy. Such a shame as I thought the concept had a lot of potential.

Colourful and with effects that are nothing short of perfect. The acting is unequal because you feel that Cara and Rihanna have the best lines. Valerian is miscast but to be fair, the actor is given a succession of one liner in the style of Han Solo. Valerian is not that kind of character in the comics, and it doesn't fit well with DeHaan. The succession of fast action doesn't give us the time to enjoy the characters or the amazing locations that much. Because the action is fast you have no time to reflect on what you see (exception of the movie beginning). The music is sadly forgettable and classic. For a movie about aliens, the music should have followed in that path by being a tad strange. After the Rihanna section the action scenes are becoming too short, almost like they have run out of money. I though that the presence of Rihanna was good, but looking back...it was a big distraction to the story. This movie would have benefited from more interactions between the characters. The original comic isn't short in dialogues, but somehow the movie deviated a lot on that point. Otherwise Valerian is joyful ride and a visual délice. Surely an action flick. I give it a 70% but sadly you won't get to know much about the two main characters or feel for them. Expand

Seriously, it needs to win awards for this level of effort. As for the film itself, I like Luc Besson and you'll see a lot of his famous "The Fifth Element" in this, and it also looks like he borrowed the Na'vi from Cameron's "Avatar". He got so many parts of this film right but the leads are serious impediments. Dane and Cara just don't have the gravitas to lead this. Dane, at age 30, comes off as juvenile and in need of good spanking and Cara at least attempts to bring some level of maturity but falls short. Also, Dane sounds a lot like Keanu Reeves in portions of this and that doesn't benefit him. I don't know how much Luc was involved in their casting but it's a big fail and may be the big reason this film didn't score better. Also, the haphazard way they tied up the end of the film by wasting a lot of time with a pointless blaster fight hurt it. The film just wasn't fully baked. Expand

A film that is worth viewing for the spectacle alone. Not to say there aren't some fun moments within the story, but by the end you find yourself a little exhausted. B-

Pretty imaginative alien world, but boring overall.

I'm a Fifth Element fan, and that movie was a lot of fun, with lots of charm, and tons of hilarious moments. Then this came up, with Luc Besson as the director I was really excited to watch it.

I never read the comic book, but as far as comic goes, European comics have really unique style and story. Probably because they didn't reach the mainstream audience much. And lots of french movies are great, so at least these facts get me higher hope for the movie.

But... the very bottom line is that I was wrong to expect Valerian as "spiritual successor" of Fifth Element. I'm guessing this is a very idealist project, sort of like James Cameron's Avatar.

Something that has been around Luc Besson's head for awhile, but the technology wasn't up to it back when he came up with the idea.

So the execution? The CG are wonderful, but that's pretty much all of it. Action sequences are not impactful, even Transformers Last Knight still did it better. No witty dialogue or hilarious/memorable moments such as when Ruby Rod interviewing Korben Dallas. The story is a jumbled mess too.

If you want to feast your eyes again after Avatar did it to you, this will satisfy your thirst at least partially.

But this ain't no Fift Element.

TheValerian is film that if you are watching at home make sure you have a tv no smaller that 50" and a great surround sound system. While i think this film is no masterpiece its more than capable of holding the attention of the viewer. The opening scene is a fantastic start in what is a great visual treat for well over 2 hours and doesnt let up with the action and amazing sound. The story while simple is just what you'd want and expect in this type of sci-fi film. The story was very easy to follow and the characters were all likable but i did feel that some scenes needed to be cut down or just cut out. Films that use CG quite a lot should always know when enough is enough but it just seems the CG artists here kept on adding and adding. The film was decent and i will probably have no problem watching it again some time in the future. Expand

It's big, extravagant, funny and entertaining. Did you like the fifth element? Valerian is bigger: it's avatar on steroids, John Carter on acid, Alice in spacewonderland.
It's ... space oddity ;)
Give this movie a chance.

But... this all was ruined by wrong actors choice. Valerian is played by guy who tries too hard to be badass, it sounds like he's forcing his voice to be lower and the outcome is ridiculous. Also he doesn't look badass at all. He sounds like he had stuffed nose the whole time. That girl... this was also a poor choice. She can't act, but on top of that she has incredibly irritating face. Eyebrows in particular. She was just ugly. I couldn't look at her, it was just annoying. Finally we get to Rihanna, who was just put there. No reason for her to be there, it was some kind of marketing stunt I suppose. She didn't fit in her role, she was just there to show off. From all of this I got the sensation that those actors were just forcibly fit into these roles, because how come the CGI generated characters were far better in acting!? This film could be epic. Really enjoyed this one. Familiar and human and filled with love. Definitely worth a watch, and warrants rewatches if it connects with you like it did with me. Also better than any Star Wars movie by a mile.

Also the story had zero plot holes.

The plot is a mess, the dialogue is brutally stilted, awkward, and exposition-heavy, and above all they completely wreck both the lead characters. Valerian is supposed to be a lantern-jawed He-Man ladykiller but here he's a dead-eyed twink, and Laureline is supposed to be bubbly, feminine, and lovable (and totally in love with Valerian), but they've made her a scowling, frigid harridan obsessed with her career.

Just read the comics, they are 1000x better and will underline just how badly they botched this adaptation.

Visually a nice movie, but the main protagonist is pretty unlikable and the story is as flat as a pizza. Pretty sad given the fact that the movie had loads of money to spend on very nice optics, but seemingly nothing left for the writers.

But the result was a totally incompetent rubbish. How sad it is! I do not understand how this is possible - the author of such a beautiful work as the "fifth element" suddenly creates such a sludge? Oh, maybe because the director Luc Besson decided to work in the area where he does not understand at all? He decided to write a script... I think this is the main problem of the film - a weak screenplay. Or rather complete absence of adequate screenplay. I put zero for this movie because I could not watch more than 27 minutes. watch longer, just unbearable Expand

The only real detractors are the wooden performances of the two leads. Valerian is an unfortunate graduate of the Keanu Reeves school of acting and the chemistry just isn’t there between the two. Beyond that it’s a fantastic, visual feast that only Luc Besson could pull off and get away with. Expand
