For so many recent movies, you can predict pretty accurately what will happen in the next 90 minutes from the first 15, but not so for Valerian. There is a sense of wonder in this film. There is the wonder of seeing so many strange alien beings who are truly aliens, and not just bipedal humanoid of varying colours. There is the wonder of seeing different acrologies and biomes. There is the wonder of seeing genuinely funny scenes that are not deliberate or forced, but tickles you in the right place. The film is visually stunning and full of surprising twists and turns. Above all, it is peppered with a lot of humor and great ideas. Every scene, every minute is a feast for the eyes and simply beautiful to look at! Above all, the performances of the protagonists convince with their simplicity and elegance. It is actually a well-crafted beautiful and dynamic love story of Major Valerian, skillfully played by Dane DeHaan and the lovely Sergeant Laureline played by the beautiful and gorgeous Cara Jocelyn Delevingne. The CGI's are in the upper area. The story is well thought out and masterfully executed on screen. Particularly noteworthy is the guest appearance of Rihanna, Rutger Hauer, one of the great actors of our time, who has unfortunately passed away and Ethan Hawke. Awesome! I've watched the movie 4 times and I'm always amazed at how well done it is! BRAVO LUC BESSON! BRAVO! Expand

I get that this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s wild and crazy and sometimes silly. But it’s certainly not simple or dumbed down. It will find it’s rightful following on video. The only real detractors are the wooden performances of the two leads. Valerian is an unfortunate graduate of the Keanu Reeves school of acting and the chemistry just isn’t there between the two. Beyond that it’s a fantastic, visual feast that only Luc Besson could pull off and get away with. Expand

A beautiful movie. Don't understand the critics who will rate any Star Wars movie high in spite of the wooden plot and acting and then trash this enjoyable and original film of the same type.

Not to mention with such quality visual effects and animations. This was a real treat. The main pearl aliens planet, behaviors and look were so unique that I was intrigued. What also struck me as surprising and kept me intrigued was the unique relationship unfolding between the two main characters. Finally, the lead female actor who played Laureline perfectly hit the alluring 'sexy' aspect that I felt they were trying to include in there and reproduce Fifth Element with Leeloo. Expand

The film speeds by so many interesting visuals and ideas pulling you into the next one before you've barely caught your breath. However, this is definitely not a film for everyone, it is outlandish and bizarre and will often contradict its own world's rules several times in the same scene. You should definitely go in with more of a Monty Python mentality and less of a Star Wars mentality. The only major issue I had was with a 30-minute plot cul de sac right in the middle of the film. Rihanna shows up for a goofy and awkward side story that should have been completely cut from the final film; it merely provides a long distraction from the main plot and adds nothing to the overarching story. I love that she's bringing people into the theaters for fun action sci-fi films like Battleship and Valerian, but they're clearly creating custom characters for her that just aren't very good. I loved everything before she shows up and after she leaves. Expand

The plot kinda stretched a bit, there are moments of terrible acting, but the film knows that it's just trying to have fun, and at that it exceeds. I'm a long time fan of the French comic book series and I feel like this did pretty good justice. And finally, the 3D is definitely the best 3D I've ever seen, better than Avatar (which looked amazing but was not a very good film). Sadly we'll probably never see the characters in a sequel as the critics basically shot this movie in the heart. Expand

I quite enjoyed watching this movie and so is everyone sat next to me. But release on the same day with Dunkirk is a very bad decision. If you are making decisions which movie to go for this weekend and if you are not interested in Dunkirk, this movie will worth your money.

So let me first talk about what is bad:
1. Trailer. Just terrible. Misleading trailer.

2. Story. The story is not that "bad", However, this is a mix of the star trek and the star wars. I had a feeling that "this is star trek beyond" since the beginning to the end.

3. The setting: as title said, this is a movie about "the city of thousand planet", however, the story itself doesn't adapt such nice setting. The story has nothing to do with this "the city of thousand planet". If I change this movie to "Valerian and The death star" it still works. Such a waste!

Let's talk about what is good.

1. CG. Like some users said above, the director is going to have the same life where Zack Snyder will live the rest of his life. The CGI is good. However this is not a selling point in 2017. I promise you if we put this movie in 2008, that's a winner. As for today, it is really not important.

2. Cara Delevingne. Holy **** I just can't stop looking at her the whole movie, she got all my attention and I don't really care about what on earth this movie is talking about. she is so pretty. HEY, why this is called "Valerian and the city of a thousand planets". Change to "Laureline and the city of a thousand planets" please.

3. Rihanna. That's the best 5 mins in the movie. You will know what I am talking about if you go watching this movie.

Overall, this is a fine movie worth your 5 dollar ticket. The movie is full of amazing idea but the director didn't make it in good use.

I will give it a 6 and 1 extra points for Sergeant Laureline.

I feel maybe 15 minutes could have been shaved off, with its weakest points being Rihanna's sub-plot and some needless mushiness in the final act. Still, it wasn't enough to stop me from enjoying the film and talking over certains scenes with my wife.

Despite a few cheesy lines, the relationship between the two lead actors felt pretty realistic to me, a husband of 6 years.

Side-Note: Valerian came well before Star Wars...best recognize and respect :p

Does the Hollywood blockbusters industry feel threatened in any way by a French movie other than from the independant movance? It is really to be wondered when you read the critic of that guy in the Hollywood Reporter. Everybody is entitled to its own opinion to be sure, but I'm puzzled by such subjectivity. Praising random Blockbusters with no imagination whatsoever and crappy plot and litterally destroying one (arrgh French) with imagination, crasy effects and original premises. Yes, for sure, the scenario could have been maybe refined in some places, but nothing that justify a 20 whereas other movies with nothing more than this one (Guardian of Galaxies opus 1 for example? with its pushy and already seen pushline like "Oh yeah!!"). I mean, really? One thing people, once again everybody is entitled to his/her opinion, but give it a try. Don't let those shamy critics discourage you to watch that movie. And then, if you don't like it, you're perfectly entitled to that and I would be very much interested to read a review with constructive critics! Not those crappy review of so-called professionals. You come out of the cinema saying "what was that?" and then over the next week or two, bits of the movie tease you into "maybe I should see that again", much like my first viewing of The Fifth Element so many years ago.

Then on the second viewing, the plot is "out of your way", and you can focus on how all the wonderful imagery, action and performances come together, especially that of Dane DeHaan as Valerian and Cara Delevingne as Laureline. They are quite charming, and the dialogue is witty without being self-concious.

After the second viewing, I went away feeling far more entertained and awed by the whole concoction, and even with the feeling.... "I want to see it AGAIN" (just like The Fifth Element) !

Seriously, it needs to win awards for this level of effort. As for the film itself, I like Luc Besson and you'll see a lot of his famous "The Fifth Element" in this, and it also looks like he borrowed the Na'vi from Cameron's "Avatar". He got so many parts of this film right but the leads are serious impediments. Dane and Cara just don't have the gravitas to lead this. Dane, at age 30, comes off as juvenile and in need of good spanking and Cara at least attempts to bring some level of maturity but falls short. Also, Dane sounds a lot like Keanu Reeves in portions of this and that doesn't benefit him. I don't know how much Luc was involved in their casting but it's a big fail and may be the big reason this film didn't score better. Also, the haphazard way they tied up the end of the film by wasting a lot of time with a pointless blaster fight hurt it. The film just wasn't fully baked. Expand

I'd watched it the second time to check my feelings - everything's OK with the movie, something's wrong with the people. You know, the same people who give "Valerian" lowest grades on the reason that movie's plot is not enough cohesive and actors are not good enough, gives "10" to "Noah" and "Jupiter Ascending"! The same people who give "Valerian" lowest grade on the base that its plot is poorly written, highly appreciate "Jurassic World". People who hate "Valerian" for the reason that its story is underwhelming, give "9" to 'Spider-Man: Homecoming". People who call it "an epic pile of crap" appreciate instead "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Fantastic Beasts"... And so on! It has no meaning, no logic, no sense at all! It's a pure hatred, nothing more, and I ask why?!!Why as soon as something outstanding and worth mentioning appears in the mainstream, there emerges a hoard of detractors who instantly begin slinging mud at it? Yes, it's a pure entertainment but it's absolutely good as an entertainment. You know, it's not about CGIs, it's all about talent and imagination and how we use them. What does it teach us? To enjoy and value the life, of course, what else? I truly liked it and I sincerely thank Luc Besson for making a good engaging movie where he somehow contrived to avoid some standard stale and hollow issues that now seem almost unavoidable, e.g.: social and family values theme, clerical propaganda, good people organizing for the struggle against bad authorities, hyper-muscled superheroes saving the world, super-villains with super-powers, static talking heads lost in endless dialogs intended to somehow patch holes in a plot etc. And my special thanks to Luc for engaging for the leading roles actors, not "stars"! You know, not Tom Cruise or something of that kind! 7.5/10 Expand

After reading the critic reviews which I'm beginning to realize can be totally wrong, I skipped the movie at the theaters and waited for it to come out on Blu-ray. Unfortunately, the US didn't get a 3d version and I had to watch it in 2d. Still this is a very interesting scifi movie and it does do a fine job of bringing to life a comic book. I loved the visuals and the story was fine by me. The most telling sign of all was that my son who had played soccer the whole day wanted to watch the whole thing even though he was exhausted:-)

Could it have been epic or better? Absolutely! The main issue I had was with the actors and particularly the main actor - this was not the right casting choice. He doesn't seem happy and he can't play smug either. Besson is a master at picking good actors for roles which is very surprising to see him fail in that regard here.

If you look at the Professional, Luc Besson brought us Natalie Portman, Jean Reno and Gary Oldman.

In the 5th Element or the Professional, he brought us Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich and Chris Tucker.

I think if he had picked better actors with better chemistry, this movie would have been much better.

Other than that, the movie was beautiful and fun to watch.

Normally it is a good thing to follow user reviews instead of critics. After having been disappointed with a lot of movies lately (star wars last jedi, guardians of the galaxy vol. 2), this movie is absolute great entertainment. Don't take the movie too seriously (it doesn't take itself too seriously) and you will be in for a good 2 hours. I don't get why star wars the last jedi gets 85 from critics (4.6 from users) and this one 51 (and 6.4 from users). Similar stuff on rotten tomatoes.

The main guy character is not likeable and frankly, a bit dumb. But I think the director is playing with clichées here and I am astonished that the critics didn't get that.

The main plot and what humanity is capable off has still some message. Read Ender series for more similar stuff.

Muted performances from DeHaan and Delevingne and an uneven script may bog the movie down but there is still much fun to be had. Expand

Upon arriving we did our normal and ordered our food while we researched the feedback on the movie. Valerian was a film that caught my attention from the trailer and from the day I saw the trailer I knew this film was one for me and we were hopeful.

The film started and immediately I started wondering why all the negative talk about this film? Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets movie is the next level 5th Element, it’s up there with Avatar; this film has everything for sci-fi fans, and it’s equal if not better than Guardians of the Galaxy. Why other than the trailer was there not much of a buzz about this film?

Valerian is a cinematic concept based on the comic from the 60’s, and even then this comic didn’t have a big following; heck we’re comic buffs and hadn’t heard of it until now. This film has made us a fan, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) is quite possibly one of the best sci-fi films released in a long time. The story is funny, fun and very adventurous. The cast fit their roles in Valerian so perfect that at times I felt the 5th Element versus Guardians of the Galaxy vibe with a huge chunk of originality on it. The creativity, graphics, effects, and conception when bringing this film to light from the comic must’ve been quite a choir and you can tell that Luc Besson truly cared about what he was doing with this one.

In short. Graphically stunning! Action Packed through till the end! If you’re a sci-fi fan this is one for you, I hope for a sequel and we will be collecting all of the comics that we can find.

A very fun movie for non-hardcore sci-fi fans and I think even children would get a blast out of seeing this movie. The interaction between the main characters can be viewed as non-realistic and rather adhering to comic-book logic.

Colourful and with effects that are nothing short of perfect. The acting is unequal because you feel that Cara and Rihanna have the best lines. Valerian is miscast but to be fair, the actor is given a succession of one liner in the style of Han Solo. Valerian is not that kind of character in the comics, and it doesn't fit well with DeHaan. The succession of fast action doesn't give us the time to enjoy the characters or the amazing locations that much. Because the action is fast you have no time to reflect on what you see (exception of the movie beginning). The music is sadly forgettable and classic. For a movie about aliens, the music should have followed in that path by being a tad strange. After the Rihanna section the action scenes are becoming too short, almost like they have run out of money. I though that the presence of Rihanna was good, but looking back...it was a big distraction to the story. This movie would have benefited from more interactions between the characters. The original comic isn't short in dialogues, but somehow the movie deviated a lot on that point. Otherwise Valerian is joyful ride and a visual délice. Surely an action flick. I give it a 70% but sadly you won't get to know much about the two main characters or feel for them. Expand

And that's a problem, exemplified in the first scene between the two heroes. They have a kind of wrestling match on a sunbed on a beach, while spouting - as far as I can remember - plot lines which are lost in the jerky editing. It doesn't work: it looks false and contrived, the director force-feeding his audiance the comic book tropes that simply don't work on film. And this conceit appears several times, very often when the story is just getting a bit of steam up.

An opportunity missed. It could have been so, so much better if the director:

...had replaced the crass 'romantic' relationship between the leads by an unstated but palpable sexual tension. (Think of the X-Files)

.. had employed a really good scriptwriter, to simplify the plot and give the whole movie an over-arching narrative drive.

Boy, what a movie that would have been: like 'the fifth element' (one of my favourite, favourite films) on speed.

As it is, very enjoyable (worth an 8 out of 10) but it could have been so, so much better.

As I said: sadly, a missed opportunity.

A fantastic film! After seeing the trailers I had high expectations for this film and it completely cleared them to give me the best film I have seen in ages.

You get a really sense from start to finish a lot of effort and love has gone into getting this right, the quality shines through.

The epic scale of the future and worlds have wonderful detail but never to much, just the right amount to make flow and feel immersive at the same time.
You see the world as the characters explore it so you definitely feel taken along for the same ride and this gives it a wonderful experience of exploring it with them.

The story is brilliant and the characters enraging, interesting and likeable. The story and characters strike a perfect blend of the serious with the funny, some of the best scenes are with Cara Delevingne as Sgt Laureline who gives a standout performance of a character who pulls no punches either in a fight or in a conversation.

The visuals are absolutely breath taking and a must see at the cinema with incredible effects and aliens who look very cool and life like.

The film is 2 hours 17 minutes but it really does not feel that long keeping a great pace told through the two main characters who work well together and apart. The two main characters are down to earth in an epic world and they really give the story a great flow and feel.

Wonderful film, I highly recommend it for anyone who loves a great adventure film with imaginative story, world and fun, likeable characters.

Loved it!!!

Preface: I don't judge movies based on their innovation or artistic value, but simply on entertainment derived from direction, writing, acting and cinematography.

Poor direction can kill a movie, and has killed many a space opera, but luckily Luc Besson knows what he's doing here. His attention to detail is exquisite, making me want to watch a second or third time just to catch all the small details I missed the first time around.

Obviously the movie is visually stunning, and we knew that going in. It certainly doesn't disappoint.

Unfortunately, writing that begins strong kind of peters out by the second half. Cringe-worthy jokes by the alien Bubble (played by Rihanna) are pretty rough, but Laureline has her fair share of weak lines. Unfortunately, her character delivers what is supposed to be the profound message of the movie, but it's the same old message Hollywood has been spouting at us for decades. Valerian's character is inconsistent at times. There are also several scenes that were unnecessary and should have been cut. The one that particularly stands out is meant to add some depth to Valerian's and Laureline's relationship, but doesn't really achieve its aim. And, accordingly, a later scene doesn't have the impact it could have.

I know there's been a lot of hate for the casting, but I disagree. I think both the leads do an admirable, if not great, job. Chemistry is fine, but again, not outstanding. On a personal note, I find Dane DeHaan's (Valerian) gravelly voice somewhat irritating.

I watched The Fifth Element prior to going into Valerian, just to compare notes. It has the same whimsical quality to it, without being overbearing, but with a slightly more serious tone. While I rate it overall a "good" 7/10, in terms of space operas it's very good. Going off the review scores it's been getting, I'd say it's slightly underrated.

I'll make a prediction: if you like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you'll like this. If you're a die-hard DC grimdark fan, you'll hate it with a passion. And you know what? Great! Stay away, cruel hearted know-it-alls who insist that life is nothing but a game of one person screwing over another for the bigger bank account. This is a film for dreamers and lovers, and without them the world would be one dank place indeed. Are there flaws? Well, depends on what you consider flaws. The dialogue isn't generic American summer blockbuster-worthy, but neither is it Shakespeare. DeHaan won't win himself any fans, but he's at least interesting. Delevingne is the beating heart and razor wit of the show, and her Laureline is a joy to experience. I approached this film loving The Fifth Element and expecting something akin to that--and I was not disappointed. The opening 15 or so minutes alone are worth the price of admission. I sprang for the 3-D showing, and it's commendable, but I think it will play just as well in 2-D. Expand

It has a nice portion of Humor, which the most other SciFi Movies lack. Its over and you like to watch it again, immediately. What a beautifull trip, with the special spice, that it seems just Luc Besson can deliver. Its, apart from the 3D-effects, imho on one quality level with Avatar, maybee it got little more fantasy and a lot more humor. Of course the two main characters are a matter of personal taste, i liked them. The Story is good enough to carry and put together all the happening.

Too ambitious and too muddled, Valerian will no doubt confuse a lot of, and perhaps please, just as many people. There is much to love, at least visually, and the heart of the story is pure and fresh. Poor chemistry between the main stars was a big surprise; however, Delevingne clearly has a bright future. She is the pearl in this oyster.

Valerian would have been better served as a 10 episode HBO series. More than any one particular failing, Besson is clearly cramming too many intriguing and hilarious adventures into one picture. The story begs for a serial format and its compression, though done with care and skill, is its downfall.

A film this beautiful should be be seen large. Tamper your expectations. Pay attention and enjoy.

„Valerian“ is a blockbuster adventure, by far the most expensive movie French have ever produced, and live action adaptation of long-run French comic „Valerian and Laureline“ (1967-2010).
It’s a fast-paced action filled adventure reminiscent of at least four modern classic sci-fi epics:
* „Star Wars“ for the variety of locales, characters and amount of backstory
* „Avatar“ for the visual style and storytelling (especially the hidden meaning part)
* „Tomorrowland“ and Besson’s own „The Fifth Element“ (1997), for inventiveness and abundance of visual details, so the future societies shown are always interesting enough to just watch and explore
But first and foremost, it’s the newest project by the legendary Luc Besson, who has three different sides to him as a filmmaker.
Younger people may know him mostly as producer of action such as „Taxi“ and „Taken“ series – thus he can be called the proud godfather of modern action subgenre which I like to call „eurotrash“. But he makes also „serious“ movies such as 1994’s „Léon“ and „1999’s „Joan of Arc“, which are surely among his most celebrated works.
The man also likes to explore ways of combining the sensibilities of mainstream and artsy cinema, where the result is far from „something serious“ but can not be strictly classified as just entertainment too.
The most well-known example of that is, of course, „The Fifth Element“. And if I am not mistaken, „Valerian“ would like to be something like that, too.
Yes, for the most part, it’s just an entertainment. But the story also has a hidden allegory or warning for humankind acting too stupid and selfish to save our future.
Some interpret it as a political message too but I can’t be bothered to go into that, maybe because I identify more with the humankind destroying itself part. Anyway, the hidden aspect is shallow enough to be disregarded easily, if you choose to enjoy „Valerian“ as just a joyride. Mostly.
So… what would you get if you could combine the look of „Avatar“ with the variety of „Star Wars“ and detail-richness of „The Fifth Element“ or "Tomorrowland"? Besson & crew have tried their darndest best and the result is visually magnificent indeed.
There’s so much to explore and enjoy, and the artists have dared to push their imagination to the limits. Thus it often feels more like a videogame or animated movie, rather than live action, but in a good way.
I have concentrated mostly on the good here, but there’s bad too. You know, the quite usual blockbuster weaknesses… general shallowness; continuing for too long; many of the characters are not interesting enough; for all the action, there’s a shortage of tension because the heroes rarely seem to be in any real danger – everything just works out for the best.
Personally, the biggest letdown was witnessing that Besson did or could not create more intriguing characters for famous actors appearing here. Clive Owen’s part is just lame and forgettable, Ethan Hawke and Rihanna are better but not exactly interesting neither.
On the other hand, young stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne are good enough to carry the movie. They have enough charm both alone and together to justify the starring roles. They will appear in 2017’s version of „Tulip Fever“ too, by the way – coming to Estonian cinemas in September.
But I would like to stay with the good stuff because „Valerian“ was clearly a labor of love for the people involved. And if you like sci-fi and/or action adventures, there’s enough entertainment here to deserve 139 minutes of your life.

It's big, extravagant, funny and entertaining. Did you like the fifth element? Valerian is bigger: it's avatar on steroids, John Carter on acid, Alice in spacewonderland.
It's ... space oddity ;)
Give this movie a chance.

Colourful sci-fi, such a refreshing change from that dull pompous Star Wars stuff, which seems to be flavour of the month at the moment with critics and audiences who believe the force actually exists.

If you liked The Fifth Element, you’ll get this movie. What’s being said here is that space is big, there’s lots of stuff in it, and that stuff’s a mish-mash of all our imaginations squashed together. Ok, so some of what’s up on the screen here isn’t all that original, I’m looking at you endangered aliens, who are a cross between the blue monkeys of Avatar and the six-limbed what-nots from John Carter.

But there’s enough stuff that is the movie’s own creation to keep the visuals fresh and the action engaging. Having said that, Valerian’s accent (Keanu Reeves straight out of Bill & Ted) constantly distracted me, but not to the point that I couldn’t appreciate Cara Delevingne’s genuine star quality.

If you like your sci-fi on the imaginative side, and coloured with a pallet that’s more than 50 shades of grey, rent this film, today.

The two main characters show that tension between "men and women" dominance that pervades politics and something that The Last Jedi totally FAILED at making interesting. This movie was awesome. It did the whole "military complex" thing that TLJ tried and it succeeded. Just about in every category it was better than TLJ. It's a sci-fi film chock stiff with CGI and crazy sci-fi ideas. It's not bad just not amazing compared to other sci-fi films out there. I found it enjoyable and Valerian's voice was shockingly similar to Keanu Reeves.

The CGi tech/ Art Style/ environment : Impressive and remarkable, seems like the movie had took inspiration from Mass Effect series, especially the space suit outfits.

Actors performance : the arent the best, but still good acting overall, not much to complaint, and i was captivated by Cara Delevingne, and Dane was quite handsome and charming despite looked smaller size.

While i think this film is no masterpiece its more than capable of holding the attention of the viewer. The opening scene is a fantastic start in what is a great visual treat for well over 2 hours and doesnt let up with the action and amazing sound. The story while simple is just what you'd want and expect in this type of sci-fi film. The story was very easy to follow and the characters were all likable but i did feel that some scenes needed to be cut down or just cut out. Films that use CG quite a lot should always know when enough is enough but it just seems the CG artists here kept on adding and adding. The film was decent and i will probably have no problem watching it again some time in the future. Expand

This film is like Michael J. Fox meets Indiana Jones in a galaxy far far away and in the process outdoes Star Wars and Star Trek both on practically every conceivable level by at least several orders of magnitude.

Yes, it's a comic action-adventure flick so if there are any Oscars to be won they will be in the realm of stunning visuals, of which there are plenty. We have landscapes unlike any other. We have aliens who bear no resemblance to cuddly stuffies and action figures to be found in toy store chains. We have absolutely NO robots attempting to provide comic relief. And we have Valerian and Laureline, billed as soldiers but handling missions more like agents, trading wisecracks and innuendos and the occasional contemplative remark about the meaning of life and the nature of the universe.

The criticism of the film merely confirms my general opinion of the modern movie audience. People say that the two leads lack characterization and chemistry and these same people will heap praises on Bourne and Wick and every other two-dimensional pot of offal being churned out endlessly by Disney and the rest of the industry. They'll say the dialog is stilted and nonsensical and then applaud films where there are two lines of dialog, primarily grunts, for every twenty minutes of blasting machine-guns and fiery explosions.

Valerian and the City of of a Thousand Planets is a very entertaining film. It's fun. It's a bit of a thrill ride. It does a few things I haven't seen before. I absolutely recommend that you give it a watch.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a wonderfulThis is what you would expect Avatar to look like if Luc Besson directed it. A visionary when it comes to spectacular on screen masterpieces like The Fifth Element back in 1997. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a wonderful adventure through space in a future where only your wildest dreams are actually real.

Based on the comic book series Valerian and Laureline the two set on an adventure through space from planet to planet in search for a little creature called a Mül Converter that will hopefully help stop Alpha, the City of a Thousand Plants, from imploding. Or so it seems. As the two get further into their mission they find the story they’ve been told isn’t quite as it seems. But being the good agents that they are, they uncover the truth and help right what was once wrong.

While the story is simple and very similar to stories that have been told before in agent style dramas, there cold have been so much more to give the story substance and depth. It’s the one thing that doesn’t quite work for the film, which you would think is a huge mistake being that the story is the movie. In this case the story is just a fun way of showing the visual spectacular that is Valerian.
The opening scene starts off with David Bowie’s Space Oddity as you glide through space until we meet a plant full of albino-lizard, human formed aliens living in what can only be described as paradise. Not a cloud in the sky, beautiful beaches but what is truly remarkable about this scene is how clear and believable it is. The CGI used in Valerian is so good you will forget that you’re actually looking at aliens. But it’s not just the intro that sucks you in, the remainder of the film has such close attention to details that every scene is vibrant and clear with so much to look at and explore. Something this spectacular can only come from Luc Besson and his amazing adventurous mind.

Luc Besson has worked as a Director and Writer for more movies than you probably know. The biggest and most recognisable is The Fifth Element back in 1997, which has the same look as Valerian. And to celebrate the 20 years a handful of local cinemas are putting on special screenings. He played a part in writing the Transporter series as well as Taken. While his Directing hasn’t produced a great deal of blockbusters, the ones he has directed have been just as spectacular with the like of Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson.

Besson missed the mark with his special touch in Valerian not only in the basic story line, but also in the development of the characters which is surprising as a great deal of his films are character driven. We find these two star crossed lovers at the centre of the screen with all this built up tension but no back-story. No back-story to who they are and why they are the way they are. And it’s this that brings the story down. It isn’t just the leads, a great deal of the characters are one dimensional and flat. The ones that stand out are the aliens that collect the pearls from the ocean. This colony of aliens seems to be the only ones that have a strong back ground and story to tell. And despite Actors using just their voice for these aliens, there is more emotion and expression than some of the acting from the rest of the cast.Overall this film is well worth seeing, and if you can manage to see it on a big screen in all it’s visual splendour, do it. What you will find is the story meanders around and trails off which says the film was about half an hour too long. But during those scenes where you are starting to think about how much is left of the film, you can escape in the beautiful visual experience this film gives you. Every scene is full of so many things to look at and watch that you forget sometimes there’s some action or important information going on in the middle of the screen. It’s one of Besson’s true visual masterpieces and there’s a whole world out there for more of Valerian and Laureline.
