On the first viewing, you are overwhelmed by the visuals, the creativity, and the confusing plot. You come out of the cinema saying "what was that?" and then over the next week or two, bits of the movie tease you into "maybe I should see that again", much like my first viewing of The Fifth Element so many years ago.

Then on the second viewing, the plot is "out of your way", and you can focus on how all the wonderful imagery, action and performances come together, especially that of Dane DeHaan as Valerian and Cara Delevingne as Laureline. They are quite charming, and the dialogue is witty without being self-concious.

After the second viewing, I went away feeling far more entertained and awed by the whole concoction, and even with the feeling.... "I want to see it AGAIN" (just like The Fifth Element) !

After I saw the critic reviews I was surprise of their negative views. To be honest the pace, the story (if a bit soft) was creative and entertaining and this is exactly what you want to see in a SciFi movie. I like directors and producers that are bold and create a store which is probably not for everyone. You can see the amount of effort and passion everyone gave to bring this movie to life. The movie was not perfect, but definitely an unexpected exciting journey. Expand

I enjoyed that Sci-Fi Movie like no other the last 3 Years. its fresh, fantastic, visually stunning, full of new ideas, without any boring second. It has a nice portion of Humor, which the most other SciFi Movies lack. Its over and you like to watch it again, immediately. What a beautifull trip, with the special spice, that it seems just Luc Besson can deliver. Its, apart from the 3D-effects, imho on one quality level with Avatar, maybee it got little more fantasy and a lot more humor. Of course the two main characters are a matter of personal taste, i liked them. The Story is good enough to carry and put together all the happening.
This film is pure Entertainment and best Popcorn-Cinema.

And that's a problem, exemplified in the first scene between the two heroes. They have a kind of wrestling match on a sunbed on a beach, while spouting - as far as I can remember - plot lines which are lost in the jerky editing. It doesn't work: it looks false and contrived, the director force-feeding his audiance the comic book tropes that simply don't work on film. And this conceit appears several times, very often when the story is just getting a bit of steam up.

An opportunity missed. It could have been so, so much better if the director:

...had replaced the crass 'romantic' relationship between the leads by an unstated but palpable sexual tension. (Think of the X-Files)

.. had employed a really good scriptwriter, to simplify the plot and give the whole movie an over-arching narrative drive.

Boy, what a movie that would have been: like 'the fifth element' (one of my favourite, favourite films) on speed.

As it is, very enjoyable (worth an 8 out of 10) but it could have been so, so much better.

As I said: sadly, a missed opportunity.

A visionary when it comes to spectacular on screen masterpieces like The Fifth Element back in 1997. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a wonderful adventure through space in a future where only your wildest dreams are actually real.

Based on the comic book series Valerian and Laureline the two set on an adventure through space from planet to planet in search for a little creature called a Mül Converter that will hopefully help stop Alpha, the City of a Thousand Plants, from imploding. Or so it seems. As the two get further into their mission they find the story they’ve been told isn’t quite as it seems. But being the good agents that they are, they uncover the truth and help right what was once wrong.

While the story is simple and very similar to stories that have been told before in agent style dramas, there cold have been so much more to give the story substance and depth. It’s the one thing that doesn’t quite work for the film, which you would think is a huge mistake being that the story is the movie. In this case the story is just a fun way of showing the visual spectacular that is Valerian.
The opening scene starts off with David Bowie’s Space Oddity as you glide through space until we meet a plant full of albino-lizard, human formed aliens living in what can only be described as paradise. Not a cloud in the sky, beautiful beaches but what is truly remarkable about this scene is how clear and believable it is. The CGI used in Valerian is so good you will forget that you’re actually looking at aliens. But it’s not just the intro that sucks you in, the remainder of the film has such close attention to details that every scene is vibrant and clear with so much to look at and explore. Something this spectacular can only come from Luc Besson and his amazing adventurous mind.

Luc Besson has worked as a Director and Writer for more movies than you probably know. The biggest and most recognisable is The Fifth Element back in 1997, which has the same look as Valerian. And to celebrate the 20 years a handful of local cinemas are putting on special screenings. He played a part in writing the Transporter series as well as Taken. While his Directing hasn’t produced a great deal of blockbusters, the ones he has directed have been just as spectacular with the like of Lucy starring Scarlett Johansson.

Besson missed the mark with his special touch in Valerian not only in the basic story line, but also in the development of the characters which is surprising as a great deal of his films are character driven. We find these two star crossed lovers at the centre of the screen with all this built up tension but no back-story. No back-story to who they are and why they are the way they are. And it’s this that brings the story down. It isn’t just the leads, a great deal of the characters are one dimensional and flat. The ones that stand out are the aliens that collect the pearls from the ocean. This colony of aliens seems to be the only ones that have a strong back ground and story to tell. And despite Actors using just their voice for these aliens, there is more emotion and expression than some of the acting from the rest of the cast.Overall this film is well worth seeing, and if you can manage to see it on a big screen in all it’s visual splendour, do it. What you will find is the story meanders around and trails off which says the film was about half an hour too long. But during those scenes where you are starting to think about how much is left of the film, you can escape in the beautiful visual experience this film gives you. Every scene is full of so many things to look at and watch that you forget sometimes there’s some action or important information going on in the middle of the screen. It’s one of Besson’s true visual masterpieces and there’s a whole world out there for more of Valerian and Laureline.

Moreover, it's a romantic comedy whose lead characters are openly callous (ignoring allies getting killed as a direct result of their action in favour of more "flirty" chitchat) and are so unlikeable you totally do not care whether or not they get together.

Yet, this is all the plot is interested in: most of their shared dialogue is creepy "flirting", and very little screentime is devoted to addressing their supposed mission as opposed to them having to rescue each other from completely irrelevant doldrums that only exist to cram in more action scenes and give other characters a chance to pontificate on their supposed love and how they should be together. It's sickening, especially when practically all those side characters are a lot more interesting than these leads (with the exception of THREE Jar Jar clones that crop up way too often, especially for a film made a whole decade after Star Wars prequels concluced.) I suppose all of these flaws were probably present in the source material (1960's French comic book just called "Valerian and Laureline"), but that doesn't make it look any better on screen.

The "main plot" to do with their missions, or what there is of one, is also not great to say the least: it's something like a cross between Avatar and that Star Trek movie about whales, with a very pointedly "noble savage"-like race (though again, that might have looked fresh and topical when it came out and hippies were all the rage), and what now seems like parallels refugee crisis, but at the time was probably intended to mirror Algerian and Indochina wars France went through at the time, and likely nuclear testing as well. While it would've probably still looked silly, it might've been compelling if more screentime was devoted to developing these ideas, as opposed to all the reasoning being dumped in the 10 minutes close at the end.

From such promise, however, Besson provides a film which falls so spectacularly short of expectations as to induce an incandescent rage at having to endure the inexorable torment of futile hope that something, anything, might redeem the experience and justify your time. The pacing is lethargic and the editing lacks coherence, the script is utterly woeful, and the chemistry between the lead couple is more akin to siblings than lovers (decidedly not of the Lannister variety!) making for some excruciating moments. Performances are wooden and without charm, and the desired social and political commentary languishes in unsophisticated banality, devoid of any emotional resonance. The storyline had some brief moments of promise, but the plot is a sieve, and whilst there is some excellent creature design and moments of cinematic grandeur, these are few and far between and fail to redeem the film from the inconsistent abyss of boring mediocrity in which it wallows. 3.23/10 Expand

The make-up and visuals of the aliens are VG. The two lead actors are stilted, stiff, and not believable in their portrayals, their feelings for one another, and their feelings in general. The script for the two leads is pedestrian/juvenile at best, and the two leads don't even bring that off. The movie reminds me of made-for-TV shows for unsophisticated 12-year olds; that is, regular 12-year-olds wouldn't like it. What a waste of good actors like Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, and even Rihanna..., all of whom were good, if not great in their portrayals. I would wait for it to arrive on TV. I don't even recommend paying to stream this movie. Two thumbs and tow big toes down. Expand

Valerian was a movie with a lot of potential that could have been amazing.

As expected, the movie looks amazing. There is a lot of cool eye candy and art design to look at and it is a joy to watch. The movie does look great overall, even the costume designs and weapons are beautiful.

The plot is also pretty cool, but there lies the problem. The movie seemed to not know how to get to the main plot. About 33% of this movie is two side quest that are meant to build up the lead's relationship and while they're entertaining, they don't have much barring on the plot and it honestly feels messy.

Another problem is that the leads were a bit miscast. I like Dane and he does the whole running, shooting and badass action hero stuff well, but his attempts to flirt and be funny all fall flat. The other chick actually does alright, as she again is very good at the stuns and movements, but she does poorly when it comes to any scenes that require emotion. They both could have been great, but not in this role.

Last thing I will say is that the movie is very well produced. I never had trouble following the scenes as they were all shot clearly, it sounds great (with an awesome David Bowie song at the beginning) and it's very creative. I definitely enjoyed my time with it, but I totally understand why some wouldn't and it could have been better. I would say it's worth a rental though.

Its plot is confused and takes far to long to actually begin. The stars seem uninspired and their chemistry and 'banter' is forced, artificial, and rather grinding to watch. The Rihanna cameo is particularly awful, her character is briefly introduced, she gives us a dance, imparts some love advice to the protagonist then promptly dies. You will be spend your entire viewing experience waiting for the film to improve, only to find it has ended.

A fantastic film! After seeing the trailers I had high expectations for this film and it completely cleared them to give me the best film I have seen in ages.

You get a really sense from start to finish a lot of effort and love has gone into getting this right, the quality shines through.

The epic scale of the future and worlds have wonderful detail but never to much, just the right amount to make flow and feel immersive at the same time.
You see the world as the characters explore it so you definitely feel taken along for the same ride and this gives it a wonderful experience of exploring it with them.

The story is brilliant and the characters enraging, interesting and likeable. The story and characters strike a perfect blend of the serious with the funny, some of the best scenes are with Cara Delevingne as Sgt Laureline who gives a standout performance of a character who pulls no punches either in a fight or in a conversation.

The visuals are absolutely breath taking and a must see at the cinema with incredible effects and aliens who look very cool and life like.

The film is 2 hours 17 minutes but it really does not feel that long keeping a great pace told through the two main characters who work well together and apart. The two main characters are down to earth in an epic world and they really give the story a great flow and feel.

Wonderful film, I highly recommend it for anyone who loves a great adventure film with imaginative story, world and fun, likeable characters.

Loved it!!!

There is a lot negative to say about this movie, I think you already got it that I don`t like it.

„Valerian“ is a blockbuster adventure, by far the most expensive movie French have ever produced, and live action adaptation of long-run French comic „Valerian and Laureline“ (1967-2010).
It’s a fast-paced action filled adventure reminiscent of at least four modern classic sci-fi epics:
* „Star Wars“ for the variety of locales, characters and amount of backstory
* „Avatar“ for the visual style and storytelling (especially the hidden meaning part)
* „Tomorrowland“ and Besson’s own „The Fifth Element“ (1997), for inventiveness and abundance of visual details, so the future societies shown are always interesting enough to just watch and explore
But first and foremost, it’s the newest project by the legendary Luc Besson, who has three different sides to him as a filmmaker.
Younger people may know him mostly as producer of action such as „Taxi“ and „Taken“ series – thus he can be called the proud godfather of modern action subgenre which I like to call „eurotrash“. But he makes also „serious“ movies such as 1994’s „Léon“ and „1999’s „Joan of Arc“, which are surely among his most celebrated works.
The man also likes to explore ways of combining the sensibilities of mainstream and artsy cinema, where the result is far from „something serious“ but can not be strictly classified as just entertainment too.
The most well-known example of that is, of course, „The Fifth Element“. And if I am not mistaken, „Valerian“ would like to be something like that, too.
Yes, for the most part, it’s just an entertainment. But the story also has a hidden allegory or warning for humankind acting too stupid and selfish to save our future.
Some interpret it as a political message too but I can’t be bothered to go into that, maybe because I identify more with the humankind destroying itself part. Anyway, the hidden aspect is shallow enough to be disregarded easily, if you choose to enjoy „Valerian“ as just a joyride. Mostly.
So… what would you get if you could combine the look of „Avatar“ with the variety of „Star Wars“ and detail-richness of „The Fifth Element“ or "Tomorrowland"? Besson & crew have tried their darndest best and the result is visually magnificent indeed.
There’s so much to explore and enjoy, and the artists have dared to push their imagination to the limits. Thus it often feels more like a videogame or animated movie, rather than live action, but in a good way.
I have concentrated mostly on the good here, but there’s bad too. You know, the quite usual blockbuster weaknesses… general shallowness; continuing for too long; many of the characters are not interesting enough; for all the action, there’s a shortage of tension because the heroes rarely seem to be in any real danger – everything just works out for the best.
Personally, the biggest letdown was witnessing that Besson did or could not create more intriguing characters for famous actors appearing here. Clive Owen’s part is just lame and forgettable, Ethan Hawke and Rihanna are better but not exactly interesting neither.
On the other hand, young stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne are good enough to carry the movie. They have enough charm both alone and together to justify the starring roles. They will appear in 2017’s version of „Tulip Fever“ too, by the way – coming to Estonian cinemas in September.
But I would like to stay with the good stuff because „Valerian“ was clearly a labor of love for the people involved. And if you like sci-fi and/or action adventures, there’s enough entertainment here to deserve 139 minutes of your life.

Upon arriving we did our normal and ordered our food while we researched the feedback on the movie. Valerian was a film that caught my attention from the trailer and from the day I saw the trailer I knew this film was one for me and we were hopeful.

The film started and immediately I started wondering why all the negative talk about this film? Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets movie is the next level 5th Element, it’s up there with Avatar; this film has everything for sci-fi fans, and it’s equal if not better than Guardians of the Galaxy. Why other than the trailer was there not much of a buzz about this film?

Valerian is a cinematic concept based on the comic from the 60’s, and even then this comic didn’t have a big following; heck we’re comic buffs and hadn’t heard of it until now. This film has made us a fan, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) is quite possibly one of the best sci-fi films released in a long time. The story is funny, fun and very adventurous. The cast fit their roles in Valerian so perfect that at times I felt the 5th Element versus Guardians of the Galaxy vibe with a huge chunk of originality on it. The creativity, graphics, effects, and conception when bringing this film to light from the comic must’ve been quite a choir and you can tell that Luc Besson truly cared about what he was doing with this one.

In short. Graphically stunning! Action Packed through till the end! If you’re a sci-fi fan this is one for you, I hope for a sequel and we will be collecting all of the comics that we can find.

Some of the creatures in the film looked very similar to Luc Besson’s other movie “The Fifth Element”, which was a nice throw back. The main protagonists were not as memorable or likeably as some of the other space operas, but good enough to move the plot along. I didn’t mind Dane Dehann, but I can honestly say I have not like Cara Delevingne acting in any of the movies I have seen her in. She frankly comes across as wooden with most of her lines. If I had to take one good thing from Valerian other than the visuals, I would say the technology concepts were cool. It was the first Sci Fi film in a while to really show me advance technology concepts that felt alien. Overall if you like Sci Fi films you will probably find enjoyment in this one, if you’re a fan of a more emotionally deep film then this one is passable. Expand

Too ambitious and too muddled, Valerian will no doubt confuse a lot of, and perhaps please, just as many people. There is much to love, at least visually, and the heart of the story is pure and fresh. Poor chemistry between the main stars was a big surprise; however, Delevingne clearly has a bright future. She is the pearl in this oyster.

Valerian would have been better served as a 10 episode HBO series. More than any one particular failing, Besson is clearly cramming too many intriguing and hilarious adventures into one picture. The story begs for a serial format and its compression, though done with care and skill, is its downfall.

A film this beautiful should be be seen large. Tamper your expectations. Pay attention and enjoy.

And it's surprising that a film so jammed with fantastic visuals can fall so flat. Two humans (Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne) have a mission to save the titular metropolis and ultimately the universe. This is another setback: DeHaan has none of the charm or charisma of an adventure hero and his chemistry with Delevingne never sparks. But most surprising is that director Luc Besson, who's best known for action series (Taken, The Transporter), has created such anemic encounters here. There's plenty of running and fighting, but it's never staged with any creativity or excitement. Even the remarkable sci-fi elements that are crammed into every frame lose some of their spark after a while, plus the mundane writing and leaden drama dilute any appeal offered by the dazzling (and sometimes derivative) imagery. Does the Hollywood blockbusters industry feel threatened in any way by a French movie other than from the independant movance? It is really to be wondered when you read the critic of that guy in the Hollywood Reporter. Everybody is entitled to its own opinion to be sure, but I'm puzzled by such subjectivity. Praising random Blockbusters with no imagination whatsoever and crappy plot and litterally destroying one (arrgh French) with imagination, crasy effects and original premises. Yes, for sure, the scenario could have been maybe refined in some places, but nothing that justify a 20 whereas other movies with nothing more than this one (Guardian of Galaxies opus 1 for example? with its pushy and already seen pushline like "Oh yeah!!"). I mean, really? One thing people, once again everybody is entitled to his/her opinion, but give it a try. Don't let those shamy critics discourage you to watch that movie. I'll make a prediction: if you like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you'll like this. If you're a die-hard DC grimdark fan, you'll hate it with a passion. And you know what? Great! Stay away, cruel hearted know-it-alls who insist that life is nothing but a game of one person screwing over another for the bigger bank account. This is a film for dreamers and lovers, and without them the world would be one dank place indeed. Are there flaws? Well, depends on what you consider flaws. The dialogue isn't generic American summer blockbuster-worthy, but neither is it Shakespeare. DeHaan won't win himself any fans, but he's at least interesting. Delevingne is the beating heart and razor wit of the show, and her Laureline is a joy to experience. I approached this film loving The Fifth Element and expecting something akin to that--and I was not disappointed. The opening 15 or so minutes alone are worth the price of admission. I sprang for the 3-D showing, and it's commendable, but I think it will play just as well in 2-D. Expand

Preface: I don't judge movies based on their innovation or artistic value, but simply on entertainment derived from direction, writing, acting and cinematography.

Poor direction can kill a movie, and has killed many a space opera, but luckily Luc Besson knows what he's doing here. His attention to detail is exquisite, making me want to watch a second or third time just to catch all the small details I missed the first time around.

Obviously the movie is visually stunning, and we knew that going in. It certainly doesn't disappoint.

Unfortunately, writing that begins strong kind of peters out by the second half. Cringe-worthy jokes by the alien Bubble (played by Rihanna) are pretty rough, but Laureline has her fair share of weak lines. Unfortunately, her character delivers what is supposed to be the profound message of the movie, but it's the same old message Hollywood has been spouting at us for decades. Valerian's character is inconsistent at times. There are also several scenes that were unnecessary and should have been cut. The one that particularly stands out is meant to add some depth to Valerian's and Laureline's relationship, but doesn't really achieve its aim. And, accordingly, a later scene doesn't have the impact it could have.

I know there's been a lot of hate for the casting, but I disagree. I think both the leads do an admirable, if not great, job. Chemistry is fine, but again, not outstanding. On a personal note, I find Dane DeHaan's (Valerian) gravelly voice somewhat irritating.

I watched The Fifth Element prior to going into Valerian, just to compare notes. It has the same whimsical quality to it, without being overbearing, but with a slightly more serious tone. While I rate it overall a "good" 7/10, in terms of space operas it's very good. Going off the review scores it's been getting, I'd say it's slightly underrated.

An imaginative filmmaker, as demonstrated with The Fifth Element, the source material's imagination is renowned due to how it influenced the decades of science fiction films and universes that came in its wake. Set in the 28th Century, Valerian introduces the audience to the world as it is at the time. At the height of inter-species relations, the world has come together to create a floating city called, "Alpha". Playing host to species from every corner of the world in order to have all of them share knowledge with one another, it should come as no surprise that Alpha will also play host to a cover-up. Dreaming of an unknown species that relies upon the power found within a special pearl, Agent Valerian (Dane DeHaan) comes to realize that this species did once exist and is now subject to a cover-up hiding their destruction and existence from records. With the help of partner Agent Laureline (Cara Delevingne), it is up to the duo to reveal the secrets that lie within the heart of the Alpha ecosystem.

Unfortunately, Valerian is a film that greatly disappoints. Despite the strong pairing of director and material, as well as a largely strong casting job, the film winds up slipping up continuously. By the end, it is clear that one thing is true: the film would have been a lot better if it were not serious. Playing too often like a great satire on society by Paul Verhoeven, Valerian is instead Luc Besson making a film with dialogue and plotting so bad, it just has to be a satire. Unfortunately, it is not satire. Far too many lines elicit unintentional laughter. A saccharine explanation from Laureline to Valerian on what it means to love somebody is met by DeHaan uttering out, "I'd die for you." At the end of the film, when Valerian gives Laureline a ring, she says, "That's so romantic." One can argue that Valerian is a bit ahead of its time and will eventually find its audience, but lines such as these will never work. Future praise will have to note the way in which the film's dialogue slacks throughout or else that praise can be easily written off.

The film's dialogue and writing is the type that really leaves nothing to chance. Having characters explain their emotions and every feeling - especially in the dreadfully developed romance between Valerian and Laureline - the film trusts the audience to do very little in the way of thinking. Instead, it opts to spell out every detail to you, even if it is entirely frivolous. Often times, characters pop up and either explain their role to the audience or somebody else will have dialogue dedicated solely to explaining who they are and what that person will do in the story. Exposition-heavy lines regarding the world of Alpha, how everybody comes to share knowledge there, and the various groups found in the city, are not just forced, but horrifically written. Are we really to assume that two federal agents tasked with impossible missions have no idea who lives on Alpha? It is the center of their universe, yet they have no clue what happens there and need to have it explained to them? Hard to believe, at best. Thus, Besson needs to sprinkle it in the film in various doses. From flat-out having the computer explain it all to characters randomly dropping information about how the world works into an otherwise typical conversation, Valerian takes various approaches to teaching the audience about the world of Alpha. Unfortunately, none of it is useful - literally zero of the characters it introduces and explains pop up in the story - and all of it is heavy-handed anyways. For Valerian, it shortcuts world building by way of exposition. This has the unfortunate side effect of making it feel as though the world of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is not one worth exploring any further.

The way in which the romance between Valerian and Laureline, any character building moments, or side conversations, are written is really where Valerian plays like a satire. Written in such a way that the romance is the type of teenage angst that Nicholas Sparks would churn out to rave reviews among tween girls romanticizing about their first boyfriend, the romance never ceases to be awkward. Ignoring the complete and utter lack of romantic chemistry between Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, the scenes never work anyways. The filmmakers know what love looks like, so they included scenes that play out these moments. Playful, hurtful, and passionate, the scenes and the way in which they are staged often hint at the skeletal remains of love. Unfortunately, as with any bare bones rendition, it lacks any beating heart or emotion. DeHaan and Delevingne not only fail to sell the romance, but Besson's script fails to instill it with any feeling. It is written to be acted out, so who can truly blame the actors for not being able to bring the dead back to life.

I see that it bombed badly it's opening weekend, but I saw that coming. Big sci-fi that's not part of a recognizable franchise seem to always do. It has cult following written all over it. I do encourage people to see it on the big screen. It deserves better than what it's getting. Expand

The plot kinda stretched a bit, there are moments of terrible acting, but the film knows that it's just trying to have fun, and at that it exceeds. I'm a long time fan of the French comic book series and I feel like this did pretty good justice. And finally, the 3D is definitely the best 3D I've ever seen, better than Avatar (which looked amazing but was not a very good film). Sadly we'll probably never see the characters in a sequel as the critics basically shot this movie in the heart. Expand

Valerian is a breath of fresh air for the Sci-Fi genre. If you want to see a future cult classic, before it's time, space adventure then you will be hard pressed to find a better movie that scratches that itch this year than Valerian.

Mostly due to the story and the two main protagonists. However, the basic setting (i.e. the city of a thousand planets) in which the story takes place is interesting and is the only reason why I awarded any points to this movie. Taking Avatar as a benchmark, I evaluate the movie the following way: The development of the plot is way below the benchmark and not convincing. At no moment i was touched or surprised by the story: It just didnt make any sense. The acting was below the benchmark. The relation between the protagonist seemed artificial: The "romance" is rather ridiculous and convinced me at no point of time. My conclusion is: if you expect something comparable to Avatar, you will be extremely disappointed. If you expect a good and convincing plot, you will be extremely disappoined. If you expect a few nice pictures, and a few funny moments, you will be satisfied. For me personally watching this movie was a waste of both time and money. Expand

This poorly written, frequently trite and shamelessly derivative alleged action-adventure saga sapped most of my interest out of me about 20 minutes into its nearly 2.5-hour runtime. To make matters worse, this needlessly episodic trial of one's patience features abysmal casting (save for a few supporting players irretrievably trapped in their thankless roles), special effects that seem to exist largely for their own sake and a woefully inadequate back story that cripples the picture almost from the outset. The film speeds by so many interesting visuals and ideas pulling you into the next one before you've barely caught your breath. However, this is definitely not a film for everyone, it is outlandish and bizarre and will often contradict its own world's rules several times in the same scene. You should definitely go in with more of a Monty Python mentality and less of a Star Wars mentality. The only major issue I had was with a 30-minute plot cul de sac right in the middle of the film. Rihanna shows up for a goofy and awkward side story that should have been completely cut from the final film; it merely provides a long distraction from the main plot and adds nothing to the overarching story. I love that she's bringing people into the theaters for fun action sci-fi films like Battleship and Valerian, but they're clearly creating custom characters for her that just aren't very good. I loved everything before she shows up and after she leaves. Expand

The dialog is so bad, I really would have enjoyed it better as a silent film, or in a foreign language with subtitles. Visually ok. Very poor story, poor dialogue, poor story telling, poor antagonist, and poor characters. The story basically hopped around arcs like a cracked up acid kangaroo without any general direction. While parts of this 'bouncing' were entertaining and general fun, at times I just wanted to throw up. One rescue arc suddenly turned into 5 *vomits*. The romance aspect of the movie were cliche and amped up to the point of being cringe worthy lovey duvey garbage. I generally thought the story was going to build up at some point to something 'larger' than life... but ultimately built up into pretty much the most disappointing finale i could have ever imagined for such a movie with such vivid imagination for world building it's almost as if the writers they hired for the main story arc had some kind of autism or something very painful to follow at times. All in all i'd say it's worth one watch, maybe even two... probably best enjoyed in imax 3D simply due to all of the cool CGI moments. But honestly, i was fairly disappointing by besson. he really needed to pick a better antagonist, story arc, and cut the fat, trim the belly of this rampant over-produced beast of a movie. 5/10 Expand

My first main issue is with one of the main actors Dane DeHaan, who looks and sounds like someone high on opiates throughout the entire movie. My second complaint is the incredibly cheesy dialogue, and the lack of on-screen chemistry between the two main actors. After you get past those two horrible aspects of the movie you are greeted with incredibly long, boring, and disjointed side plots that go on long before the actual main plot of the movie is ever realized. I feel maybe 15 minutes could have been shaved off, with its weakest points being Rihanna's sub-plot and some needless mushiness in the final act. Still, it wasn't enough to stop me from enjoying the film and talking over certains scenes with my wife.

Despite a few cheesy lines, the relationship between the two lead actors felt pretty realistic to me, a husband of 6 years.

Side-Note: Valerian came well before Star Wars...best recognize and respect :p

It is visually appealing, the art direction of this film is superb. That is all. Everything else about this movie leaves something to be desired. They tout this as a space opera, it's more a of a space snooze fest. I cringed several times during the movie, when the protagonists were interacting. The script was so poorly written and the character development was non existent. The story arc was as basic as you could get, seems like they dumbed it down for the millennials.
I was bored for the entire 2 hours and 20 min. I kept waiting for the story to start but it never did. Save your money and wait for this to come out in the bargain bin.

Also what is going on with the Chinese Commies having bought out majority of Hollywood.

I quite enjoyed watching this movie and so is everyone sat next to me. But release on the same day with Dunkirk is a very bad decision. If you are making decisions which movie to go for this weekend and if you are not interested in Dunkirk, this movie will worth your money.

So let me first talk about what is bad:
1. Trailer. Just terrible. Misleading trailer.

2. Story. The story is not that "bad", However, this is a mix of the star trek and the star wars. I had a feeling that "this is star trek beyond" since the beginning to the end.

3. The setting: as title said, this is a movie about "the city of thousand planet", however, the story itself doesn't adapt such nice setting. The story has nothing to do with this "the city of thousand planet". If I change this movie to "Valerian and The death star" it still works. Such a waste!

Let's talk about what is good.

1. CG. Like some users said above, the director is going to have the same life where Zack Snyder will live the rest of his life. The CGI is good. However this is not a selling point in 2017. I promise you if we put this movie in 2008, that's a winner. As for today, it is really not important.

2. Cara Delevingne. Holy **** I just can't stop looking at her the whole movie, she got all my attention and I don't really care about what on earth this movie is talking about. she is so pretty. HEY, why this is called "Valerian and the city of a thousand planets". Change to "Laureline and the city of a thousand planets" please.

3. Rihanna. That's the best 5 mins in the movie. You will know what I am talking about if you go watching this movie.

Overall, this is a fine movie worth your 5 dollar ticket. The movie is full of amazing idea but the director didn't make it in good use.

I will give it a 6 and 1 extra points for Sergeant Laureline.
