A movie of two halves. It started off well with an interesting premise but by the second half the plot went of the rails and became absurd. It's difficult to explain without going into spoilers. In a nutshell, this movie sucked.

While the acting was superb throughout the movie, I felt the script kinda glossed over a few things that needed further explanation. Also the twist at the end of the movie was literally the very first thing I thought it could be after reading the story previews a few months ago. That's probably the biggest problem I have with the movie is that it was nowhere as clever as I was hoping it would be. It's still a good movie but I feel like the buildup for Peele's second movie had way to high of expectations after "Get Out". I would still recommend this to people who enjoy horror movies as it does a good job at doing that. But the twist ending was way to easy to predict and, if its possible at this point, the less you know going into this the better. Expand

Criteria: Horror movie.

The good:
-Original story
-Great acting, some of the soundtrack is really really good.
-Interesting twist.

The bad:
-Some of the mythology the film creates is underwhelming and adds little value since could be more interesting.
-Some of the soundtrack ain't that good.
-The suspense is not maintained through the movie.

Overall, I think it was a fun movie. It has better moments that Get Out, however, Get Out is more consistent in the rhythm.

He directed, wrote, and produced this film. With every scene, he directed it to perfection so you knew what was happening to this family and what to feel. This wouldn’t be possible unless the actors did their job to the best of their abilities and easily they did. Once the invaders come into their house and the tension grows that is when some of their best acting comes out. They make you sympathize with them and want them to survive. The one person who stood out the most to me though was Lupita Nyong’o mainly because she is the main one you follow throughout the film. But she easily stole the whole film from beginning to end. Even the kid actors, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex did outstanding jobs and I hope they will go far with their careers. The music in this film also helped set the tone and mood in specific scenes. Every time the music started you automatically knew that something was going to happen. This film is already one hour and fifty-six minutes and it doesn’t feel like it one bit. The movie flows really well from scene to scene and you can easily understand what is happening without knowing what’s coming up next. I have to mention that the cinematography, especially in the scene where you don’t know yet that the people are them, is really well done. This film isn’t perfect but most of my problems are spoilers so I won’t mention them but they are minor and still don’t take away from how great of a film this is. In the end, Us is a great time for anybody whether you like horror movies or not, especially because I would classify it as a thriller. I highly recommend checking this film out. Expand

After 'Get out' this really feels like a "second movie syndrome". On the plus side, acting is quite descent but that's about it with the plus side. Maybe that's my overexpectation saying: I do believe this whole story could be thought through a lot better. Since the middle of the movie you barely believe anything on the screen. The last twist of the plot is hardly an excuse for that. Expand

I really, really wanted to like "Us". Instead, I was left with the possibility of how good it could have been. This was a missed opportunity.

I grew up to classics like Invasion of the Body Snatchers & The Fly.. in 2019 you can't give me a movie that starts off with rabits and I have no idea what's going on and expect me to just take it. I mean because you put 2 of the best female actresses together (Handmaids's Tale) and (12 Years A Slave) with a horrible script doesn;t make it okay. I am baffled at these 10's and 8's and also fully convinced that movie critics cannot be trusted. Their ratings are not genuine. This film was crap with great actresses. The little boy and both husbands were so bad I wanted to kill myself in the theatre. I've never been so frustrated through an entire film. Ugh... Never again. Expand

I should have stayed home, though, because it's incomprehensible and not entertaining. A film like "The Matrix" is intellectually challenging, as well as immensely entertaining. You walk away wondering if you could be living in that kind of reality. Philosophers write books about it. "Us" isn't like that at all. The world of "Us" is totally imaginary, impossible and makes no sense.

On leaving the theatre I felt disappointed with the film, feeling it went too far in some places which overall lead to a disjointed narrative. However, the more I thought about the film the more I realised Peele's brilliance with this film. The tiny nuances through the writing and acting allow for the audience to interpret both the film as a whole and the ending in so many different ways, which I originally believed didn't work, yet after having time to think about the film it shows a great political commentary as an undertone whilst subverting the expectations of the horror genre and creating an overall brilliant film. I liked the perspective of inequality taken from the film, specifically economic and social class inequality, and some truly thrilling moments. However, the film's third act seems to detour leaving a lot more questions than answers with a lot of unset circumstances that could have been done more eloquently. In addition, the twist was relatively predictable based on the first act setup. Overall, this is a fine sophomore effort from Peele, but doesn't capture the success he found in Get Out. I'm fascinated to see if Peele will break into new genres in the future or end up being typecast as this social horror director. Expand

It brought nothing new to the table. Even the opening credits were boring. The beginning of the film was eerie but once the shadows came into the house I knew this film was a let-down. And I was super excited for this film because I LOVED Get Out and the message behind it. I've never before gone to the cinema and actually thought I might leave during the movie, that's how bad this was. However I gave it a chance and sat through the whole thing. Quite frankly, I was completely and utterly bored for the majority of this film. I actually found it hard to watch at times because either the acting was so poor, the jokes completely not funny, or the supposedly scary bits executed so poorly. It was not scary whatsoever. The plot was terrible and I did not think it was "clever" in any way, as most of the reviews on this website are suggesting. The film was totally dragged out and I would not recommend. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, this is something...

First of all credit is there credit is due: the acting and cinematography is fantastic, hands down.
The first half or so of the movie is tense and creepy. It was awesome, as awesome as you could expect.

As for the second half... well, all starts fall apart. To the point where it becomes plain stupid and incoherent when you just think about it just for a bit...

If the ending was left ambiguous and fuzzy - it may be alright, but explanation given us is so, so painfully not thought out:
1) If the main character is actually a "shadow" and don't have a "soul" all this time - why the hell she's actually scared for her kids and husband and behaves like, well, human being? Why the "shadow" who is actually a real human behaves like creepy lunatic?
2) So, someone really build this underground... facilities?.. fill them with "shadows" for some reason and them just left them there with open doors, no guards or security? Even supplied them this jumpsuits uniform and golden scissors? And one day they just kind of walk out and start murdering people?
3) Are this facilities maintained by someone? Are this someone did find strange that suddenly one of "shadows" is chained to the bed and can speak and behave like real human?
3) It's shown that "shadows" eat _only_ raw rabbits for some reason, but rabbits need food and care too. Who the hell supplied with and/or cared for rabbits all this time? Rabbits are not cheapest nor easiest way to get food by far...also living underground without sun on raw-meat diet cannot possibly be healthy, so how "shadows" possible be as healthy and strong as real humans?..
4) It is said and shown that "shadows" mimics their real humans counterparts but only the youngest son shown to have connection with his shadow in this way, all others just went loose...
5) Random attraction on a beach visited by hundreds of people is actually an unsecured entry point to the what should be top level secret government (is it specified it is actually government or just implied? I may have forgot) black-site prison-like operation. Yeah...
6) Aside from main characters none of the real humans shown alive after the events. They are implied by the helicopters though, yet still...

I really, really wanted to like this film, Get Out was superb and trailers was good, but that's just a mess. Where "Get Out" was actually logical and pretty realistic (with acceptable level of suspension of disbelief of course) "Us" is just went full "The Happening" level of WTF.

Us has brought back a similar disappointment to the one I had with Get Out. And this is due to the way Jordan Peele is getting praised by the critics when frankly his style as a filmmaker is quite simplistic.

Us is being hailed as an excellent work of horror, some people are even calling it a masterpiece of the genre when basically its whole concept is based on different and ambiguous plot pieces that are put together trying to create a more cohesive story that unfortunately doesn't feel original in any way.
Especially because its plot twist can be intuited from the beginning taking into account what you see in that opening scene and that almost all the stories that involve doppelgängers have the same plot twist.

Definitely the film has some good moments. The introduction of the doppelgängers is really creepy and Red's character is very unsettling. The tone in those moments and the use of the score are outstanding but in general, beyond the messages within the story and all the easter eggs inside of it, the film is hardly supported by its structure and the truth is that the horror felt a bit diluted. Yes, there's a lot of mystery and suspense but the horror wasn't as strong as I hoped for.

Once again there are no surprises behind the veil and it's ironic considering that for the second time in a row with Peele, the critics played against him because they made me wait for something more and judging the film with what he delivered, well... that extra step of quality isn't really there.

Peele has once again forced a certain propoganda in his new mess, and the PC critics jumped on the HYPETRAIN to blow this up just like get out, which was also ridiculous and even racist towards white people. The man is also unoriginal and rips off other films of the past that the youth of today is too naiev to realize. Get Out ripped off Stepford wives and skeleton key. Us ripped off invasion if the body snatchers and the srangers. Combine that unoriginality with his awful filmmaking style and undertones and you have the most overrated director around today mostly due to brainless leftist crtics that biasedly hype up anything thats PC. We are also still recovering from “Hands Across America.” Yeah, that “happy, lively” eventThe United States has always been susceptible to inescapable disasters. We are still recovering from when the World Trade Center was attacked. We are also still recovering from “Hands Across America.” Yeah, that “happy, lively” event advertised through cheesy commercials in truth left a nasty effect on Us. Don’t believe that accusation? Jordan Peele proves so with his newest instant-classic.

Before analyzing its brilliance, here comes a little “tough love” on the film’s poor screenplay, which is packed with coincidences. Several laughs come from the father in a Marvel fashion—that being, inappropriate comic relief thrown into serious moments. There are a couple other slightly offensive jokes that a few audience members could deem pretty dumb. It’s not just the inconsistent humor though that hinders the script’s addressed questions to our existential crisis, but too many crucial details don’t go into enough depth to make sense out of the situations; that particularly goes to the antagonists: doppelgangers of people named “shadows” who call themselves “Americans.” Where did they originally come from? It doesn’t quite explain.

In the world of regular people, little modes of affect upon the mother’s terror don’t reach their intended impact, mostly the frequent use of a man brandishing Jeremiah 11:11 on a handheld sign. It’s not clear how someone trying to play the role of a prophet isn’t warning of an upcoming tragedy that will tear the nation further apart against itself. The role of the media could particularly have been used from that free motif’s advantage to do something besides oppress our progression, but the media instead creates a poor picture of itself to raise our self-esteem, as if it’s reflecting back on those Watergate days of corrupt news outlets.

Okay, enough negativity, everything else about Jordan Peele’s new work of art projects the same disruptive power of Heaven’s Gate. The opening text informs of how North America sits above derelict underground tunnels, some without any known use, leading into a very slow dolly in at a cheerful “Hands Across America” ad on an old TV. Then comes a fearful flashback to justify the mom/protagonist’s trauma, who wanders onto the lightning-lit beach, until stuck in a maze of mirrors after the exit sign. Now, she fears Santa Cruz as her memory is overlapped by buzzing carnival music. Then the opening credits dolly out of a red, furry eye to reveal rabbits caged up to an ominous children’s choir. With the haunting intro to a true experience done with, it sparks back your permanent effects from the nation’s roller coaster history, as if any optimism the 1980s gave to counteract the 1950s-1970s has now dissipated.

The new millennium has already been no stranger to calamity, hence why we must ask ourselves, “What do we have to anticipate in the 2020’s?” Easy: A new decade, a new culture, a whole new set of expectations based on the failures of the 2010’s. The kids in this feature portray that answer, as the son, Jason, mask and magic trick in hand, finds trouble concentrating, but not as much as his sister, Zora, who stays on her phone at all times. This look of submission that the Gen Alpha characters fall victim to turns them susceptible to danger.

The mystery remains subtle enough to make Martin Scorsese proud. At first, a traumatized little girl lines up sandbox toys, then once inside a long, bleak square hallway, why she lines those toys up makes perfect sense.

It displays the media spelling out our doom based on the sound mixers’ perfect song usage. It takes little cheap trends, particularly one stick figure family focused on before the real family, to impress upon our flatness. Frustration through Dad’s humor represents humanity’s whole insecurity comparable to whenever religious groups call hurricane tragedies, “God’s wrath.” Using creepy daylight imagery of a large-scale cult, a wonderful thing turns into something scary, much like how a hurricane turns a bright, tropical vacation into death flooding around at every block.

Yet that metaphorical hurricane was actually a record-breaking fundraiser originally intended to raise up to 100 million for poverty in Africa, but only made 15 million in bank. That’s why it’s high-time Jordan Peele tells the hard truth: despite Hands Across America, “Nobody cares about the end of the world.” That’s why we need to remember that the people’s mindset tops priority over money raised; together, palm in palm, observing our commonalities, so not to relive our shortcomings. It’s incredible how Peele’s hot streak thus far can be either simply enjoyed by the typical moviegoer or thoroughly analyzed by the cinema artists, carrying a deceptive amount of heart in the process of the hilarity and screams. Give this horror film a chance, then you for certain will want to do your part in removing the traps that separate us.

I rarely am an opening weekend moviegoer but I felt I must go see 'Us'. My suggestion: wait until your next long distance flight.

Very high production value, but as you zoom out from the story you find yourself saying, "wait, what? thats ridiculous" for so many spots in the movie. The overall plot just doesn't really land and I'd call this one a dud.

It didn't help that there were several moments that were definitely supposed to be tense that the direction and acting make me have to hold in my desire to laugh. Unless I'm in the dark here and this was intended to be more 'spoof' leaning I would say that Jordan Peele missed the mark on many moments in this film and as the scope of the story widens it really loses itself. Too ambitious for sure.

I'm sorry but its tough to have any faith in critics that would give this movie a rating anywhere above a 60

Us is visually stylish but extremely pretentious and flat and just boring. It seemed like they imagined a bunch of visually arresting screen grabs and then wrote the script from there trying to create a story of it. It also felt like a hundred other things I'd seen in other movies and shows and never quite its own thing.

This pales in comparison to any movie you could possibly compare it to, from Mandy to Hereditary to any of the great A24 films or any of the classic Kubrick, Polanski or Hitchcock movies it was probably using as inspiration. There is an annoying M Knight Shyamalan-ish twist at the end that kind of invalidates the whole film. The sad thing about this twist was that it felt like a desperate last-minute attempt at achieving impact.

The direction, most of the edit work,I really wanted to like this. I really, really did. I was super excited for it after the trailer release, but it ended up being something completely and utterly different from what I was expecting. The direction, most of the edit work, cinematography, acting, all great. Unfortunately, a great movie also needs a great story, and this is where “Us” falls flat. It looks like Peele just wanted to do too much at once and as a result we are left with a patchwork quilt of a film that isn’t truly horror or thriller or comedy. I don’t want to go into details that would spoil anything, but the plot has massive, stadium-sized holes in it and that’s for the bits the movie actually decides to explain. As for the rest? Well let’s just say that vague, openendedness doesn’t work when there wasn’t even enough to encourage imagination or thought out of the audience. Also, the ending could be seen more than a mile away; there are a couple lines spoken by characters (one in the first 10 or so minutes) that straight up spoonfeed you the final twist. Not great.

Let me preface this other part by getting this out there, as I’m sure many are wondering - No, there really is nothing racial about this film, unless you think having most (not all) major characters played by black people constitutes “racial stuff”, in which case you have other troubling issues that require attention. There aren’t really even any “good” or “bad” people; it’s all relative/subjective based on the situation, which is one of the points of the movie that actually holds up well. Anyway, coming to a related topic, yes, we are now in an era of overcompensation for the historically unjust mistreatment of others, which can lead to certain movies ending up with inflated scores...However, I for one would much rather see this than go back to how it used to be, and seeing the made up nonsense in some of these user reviews, it seems that the people who are upset are exactly the ones you’d think.

So, where does all that leave us? “Us” is worth seeing for its atmosphere and many other positives related to its technical construction, including the actors’ performances. However, don’t go in expecting some intense horror film NOR some super politically charged anti-establishment and/or race relations piece. Jordan Peele will one day probably be one of our greatest directorial voices, he’s just not quite there yet.

I wonder why that is? Hmm.. surely it's just coincidence and not nearly because they're heavily influenced either financially, professionally or otherwise since their name/employer are all visible. The movie is a 5/10 at best and I give Get Out a 8/10 easily. Us is just a poor execution of a decent idea. I created an account just to illuminate the blatant discrepancy between reviews. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really admire Jordan Peele because he is a comedic genius, a really intelligent guy and also a horror movie master. With 'Get Out' Jordan Peele had us talking non-stop about his movie, first because it was a really freaky and well-made 'horror' film by a comedian, but also because it was a really good movie. Following his global, critical, and Oscar-winning success that was 'Get Out,' it's hard to make a movie that would top his previous work, or even come close. That is the case with 'Us'. While 'Us' is still a really great piece of work from Jordan Peele, it is still clear that 'Get Out' is the better movie, mainly because of the concept, the plot, the twists, and the depth. 'Us' is a really creepy, well-done horror movie that more fits in the horror category than 'Get Out' does. It has scary scenes, jump scares, brutal deaths, a killer soundtrack, twists, and an overall terrifying concept. Spoiler: the concept of clones of yourself living beneath you that most of the time mimic your actions and one day come out to kill you so they don't have to mimic you anymore is kinda terrifying, especially with the way they look, move, and menacingly walk towards you then eventually stab you with scissors. We find out that everyone, not just the Wilsons family, has a "tethered clone" that is out to kill them when the tethered rise from the underground and kill their human forms. As the tethered people rise and brutally kill everyone they form a chain that is supposed to be "Hands Across America" which doesn't really make sense but it's still pretty creepy. I would say that once this movie steps back into reality it kinda loses its whole groove. This is because the movie, especially when the mysterious deaths of random people appear, and when the first family of tethered people attacks the Wilsons, 'Us' is really intense, scary, and has you on the edge of your seat, but in addition to that you know you're going to find out what it's all about. Once the story finishes the brutal killings of the tethered to most of the humans in America we assume, they start revealing backstory, explaining everything in a messy manner. First of all, when the family is out to kill the tethered people of themselves and their friend's family, it's totally awesome. The action is great, and it's enjoyable. Then once the climax and third act has begun the movie starts to explain every single bit of detail. The only tethered person that can speak, who is Lupita Nyong'o's tether, she explains it all to Lupita Nyong'o's main character. We find out that she has been planning this attack for 20 years ever since she encountered her at the hall of mirrors in 1986, but also how there are millions of people beneath the ground that are mimicking everyone's actions up above. Also earlier in the movie she explains how she was forced to do everything that her human self had done, have children with Winston Duke's character and give birth to two kids, two which she did not want to have. Pretty much she's suffered a lot, which is why the tethered are out to kill everyone. They have suffered enough. I think the whole idea is that Jordan Peele wanted to point out the privileges in everyone no matter what race you are but just being an American you have lots of privileges. In the end there are about 3 twists in like the last few minutes, leaving many unanswered questions, but for me the biggest plot hole was why sometimes the tethered mimic their actions up above but sometimes they didn't. There are scenes where they look straight at each other and mimic them but other scenes where they don't. I don't know if Jordan Peele left some plot holes as big as swiss cheese in the story or if he's just going to explain it all in the possible "universe" he has planned for us. I'm not sure. Overall, Us is actually a really good movie because it has stuck with me ever since I saw it and really has me thinking, while it has many plot holes. Expand

The resulting horror treatise, "Us," is a bit of a mixed bag. From a simple, visceral, filmmaking standpoint, it works. The movie is composed really well -- visually speaking -- the tensions at hand are tantalizing enough to string an audience along for a couple of hours, and the performances are all top notch. But there's something lost in the translation of what Jordan Peele was trying to say with this one. Looking to "Get Out," there was something so intimate and simple about the concepts in play. And, although it tended to beat these concepts a bit to death in my opinion, I completely understood what was being said. "Us" paints with a more thematically broad brush; one that I'm certain has painted a picture that will leave many audience members uttering, ". . .huh?" by its conclusion. Couple that with some general narrative clumsiness and a few gaping plot holes here and there, and you're left with a mostly enjoyable, yet frustratingly imperfect product. Expand

So many scenes were just dark, as in night, murk, interior, watery dark. That's cheap atmospherics and really boring. Worst of all, I didn't get scared once and certainly wasn't entertained as the body count rose, applying lip gloss took five minutes of screen time and the whole plot just was hammered to death. People who think US is a great horror movie either have never seen The Shining, which makes US look pathetic, or can't get anything more complex than US. In the beginning, I thought Peale was doing something interesting in apparently satirizing the complacency, blandness, and "normality" of contemporary upper-middle-class suburban black professionals, and showing them that they are culpable for doing their best to wear "Howard" sweats as symbols of how they've left their shadow selves in the ghetto behind. But when Peale doubles their white upper-middle-class pals, too, suddenly the movie is incoherent. If Peale's trying to show whites in his audience that they are just as bad for forgetting about their own poor white, low rent "shadow," that be okay. But by showing all the red horror figures of either race as shadows of the American middle-class masses epitomized by the vapid idiocy of "Hands Across America" Peale is shooting fish in a barrel. It's all to easy and simple-minded. Kubrick was a genius. Geniuses produce works of art as complex and mysterious as genius itself. Peale's just a talented journeyman Hollywood director who gets overrated because he's black and black directors are still too rare. US is sort of the horror genre version of the action genre megabit Black Panther. Both films are shallow and ultimately rather empty, but they get lots and lots of extra points for the blackness of the principles involved. This overrating of works by blacks is actually a form of patting them on the head, as if it's "amazing" "they" can do so well, when their "so well" would have gotten a yawn from whites. Moonlight is incomparably the best black film in American history, on every level, and is one of the great American films period. It makes US look like a crude comic book. Black Klansman, not to mention Do the Right Thing, was a much better movie than US. Expand

The score, acting, direction, and cinematography are fantastic. Unfortunately, I have two problems with it that drastically affected what I think about the film. First is the humor. In some scenes, the comedic relief is perfectly timed and adds a lot to the film, and the jokes land. But there are also some scenes where it feels out of place or forced. There isn't a need for a dad joke every time a scene is getting a little serious. Secondly, the story itself felt incredibly average to me. Is the social message meaningful? Sure, but the story that presents the social message to us felt more like a traditional slasher film. It didn't particularly grab me in any way, and I found myself disappointed with the ending. A movie with metaphoric hints at the state of racial tension in America. In the same vein as M Night Shyamalan Jordan Peele is building a name for himself with metaphoric meaning and political messages being dropped all over his movies even in the face of hurting the plot and coherency. There are numerous and many unmistakable follies left in the film holes a mile long. It's a mash up of various skits that don't make sense but in this case, the skits are replaced with symbolism that inherently have more meaning to the director than anyone else. Most if not nearly everyone will leave the theater scratching their head wondering why there were so many artist renditions of metaphoric messages.

Jordan Peele is the equivalent of May Ling Lu or Chris Ofili selling **** to idiots, and they're paying millions.

It's absurd, pretentious, and lacks any real creativity. Idiots are eating that **** sandwich however and paying hundred bucks just to taste it.

The movie isn't always as successfulMore consistently terrifying than "Get Out" while maintaining that film's intelligence and emphasis on provoking thought, Jordan Peele's "Us" proves that the writer/director is far from a one-hit wonder. The movie isn't always as successful as its predecessor in exploring the heady themes of identity and control that it evokes, and is a messier, less coherent experience as a result, but nevertheless remains compelling throughout. The impressive cast members all show considerable range in playing two vastly different characters, particularly Lupita Nyong'o, who shines both as the desperate, terrified but determined matriarch as well as her sinister, calculated doppelganger with a voice straight out of a nightmare. The confidence with which Peele and his performers pull it all off is ultimately what rescues the project from itself, however, and it remains enough of an unnerving experience on a purely visceral level to remain enjoyable for horror fans looking for something a little more than ghostly ghouls and silent slashers. I do agree that it suffers a little because it's choosing to make a political statement. A slightly different choice around the origins of the movie main villains would be all that I needed. However, my origin story would undercut the moral of this tale.

This is a thinking person's horror movie on par with the extremely underrated but still haunting "Event Horizon."

Cut Out The Middle Man.

Peele is a good filmmaker. Even better in direction that he is at writing. For instance, I could see that there is barely anything on paper to make it run for an hour let alone two. But with sharp and clear of vision of creating a nail biting scene, he speaks effervescently on the topic of the day. But then, when scrambled together these finely crafted material in a dish, it comes off a bit confused. He has a lot to say and he does. Which makes you wonder is he trying to sum up all by respecting the "boundary" of the subject or is just a mere marketing strategy to get in your head?

He pays homage to classic horrors like "Jaws" and "Shining" and this is how you know how much aware he is as a director, his choice of costume design, background song and petty knock knock jokes actually advances storyline further. Primary aspect of his films are the elements that he works on throughout the storyline, for the arc of the character and the film. This old school method is both gripping and productive, from a failed magic to a broken boat, their trajectories can easily be seen and yet are thrilling to encounter.

He also uses nature for the horror. He doesn't animate or personifies the thrills, from rabbits to birds in the beach changing their behavior to even owl set up in a Scary House. The writer-director Jordan Peele's typical four part horror is actually elevated by the performance especially Lupita Nyong'o in the lead. Unfortunately, a world so rich has the lead that barely shows any of its quality, the double edged sword that is Lupita's character, never fully gets her story right. From Us to them, Peele's slow and wisely paced project increases the scale to an unexpected delightful experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While Jordan Peele is talented, and Lupita Nyong'o's performance is exquisite, this movie is way overhyped. The children are never in peril (only white teenagers seem to be expendable in this movie) and it's one of those setups where the killer has several chances to kill the protagonists, but just toy with them long enough for them to escape with torn clothes. I was waiting for this film to be scary, but even though some parts of the story are intriguing, when you find out the reveal of what's going on, it becomes stupid and implausible. Get Out worked because the story was simple, but well executed, as all good horror movies should be. This is an example of Peele making up some "cool ideas" that go nowhere in the end. I hope his next movie is worth the overpriced ticket because this one definitely was not. Expand

But unlike many movies from that era, the conclusion isn't wrapped up nicely for the audience. Instead it leaves the audience hanging with some questions. And I think this will prove divisive. Personally I found it more haunting than if everything had been explained. But likely some people will not enjoy this and feel like they were teased all along. The script, while in my own opinion not as robust as the script of Get Out, is layered and sporadically funny. The acting is great, particularly the performance of Lupita Nyong'o. The soundtrack is also phenomenal. There are a few weak storytelling elements and some ideas that aren't fully fleshed out or presented, but nevertheless, this is a great horror movie that I definitely recommend. Expand

The beginning and then the stalking scenes were thoroughly enjoyable. But as the movie progressed I understood less and less of what was going on and why exactly. Why make the doubles, why did they sometimes mimic the 'above ground' people, other times not, why did the doubles seek revenge on their counterparts and not the government? Why only eat raw rabbit? So many questions, I simply didn't 'get it' apparently. Expand

She returns to the location of the incident with her family (Winston Duke, Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) for a summer holiday. One night to their horror they find a group of doppelgängers outside their house determined to get in. Us really benefits from the less you know the better, avoid the reviews, avoid any online discussions and go see it. You won't be sorry, it's creepy, it's scary and it's well worth the ticket price.

Now hopefully you'll have a better experience than I did at my local cinema house, horror audiences tend to be the most disruptive of cinema audiences unfortunately. No film is going to benefit from someone else's conversation but particularly a horror movie that relies on silence and atmosphere is going to suffer if you've got some absolute **** in the screen. So yes the experience was ruined for me a little, gotta hate my local cinema sometimes but I still managed to enjoy Us. From the opening scene you're reeled into this story, the impending sense of doom is constant, it's not just relying on endless jump scares, instead actually working at building up to a premise you can buy into and by the time the weird **** starts happening you can just sit back and let yourself be creeped out, scared and entertained. Maybe weird doesn't even do it justice, it's insane and although a little predictable at times and very in your face with the other film references I loved the idea for this story. The entire cast is giving it their all and more, double the roles and double the pressure. Lupita is exceptional, her performance will send chills down your spine. The casting could have easily ruined this film, it could have drifted into ridiculous but for the most part it didn't. It does try to get the humour into it yet for me that wasn't really working, it uses humour to defuse the tension and honestly I would have preferred if it didn't. Jordan Peele set the bar very high with Get Out, and to be fair it's a hard movie to follow. The mix of humour and horror worked very well in Get Out but for Us it just wasn't doing it for me. I would have preferred all horror and no attempt at humour. I'm looking forward to see what Jordan Peele will make next, he's creating horror movies that aren't an endless parade of jump scares with little to no story whose sole purpose is to make as much money as possible. Horror fans get yourselves to a cinema and see Us. Highly recommended.

Its the same director, writer, composer, cinematographer the whole package, me personally I found "Get out" to be mild but, I'm gonna give that one another view anyways. In my opinion Jordan Peele is very good at provoking your mind and making you think, so to the casual viewer "Us"(2019) will definitley get your mind going but to me I saw a lot of elements from things i've already seen. In Summary this is gonna be a lot for most people but to me it was A horror twis on a National Lampoon's Vacation series family dynamic with Black Swan(2010) and Invasion of the body snatchers(1978) as fundamentals and a nice Monster(1994) twist in there, thats how I percieved this movie at least in a raw point of view of it without looking at it from those perspectives "Us" was enjoyable because I could see how the director was leading the viewer throughout the movie with his style of filmmaking this movie will make you ask and it shows you things in detail like hiding the answers in plain sight but without giving you the whole thing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I found this movie to be quite a letdown. Upon seeing the trailer, I was hyped, considering it's one of my favorite trailers in recent memory and Get Out was quite fantastic. This movie did lot live up to expectations, though.

It started off with quite a drag. A lot of shots and scenes were a lot longer than they should have been. It takes about 30 minutes to even get going.

I was intrigued to get to know what the killers were because the trailer was so vague, but upon learning what they were, I couldn't help but feel a major letdown.

The other doppelgängers seemed to kill off their victims really quick and easily (seemed like in seconds), yet this is the only family who is fighting back? Didn't seem to make much sense. Several plot holes here and there. The ending felt very rushed and I was not satisfied with the conclusion. It was very long, actually too long. My friend and I were close to falling asleep.

It's very pretty and well-acted, but that doesn't make it good in any sense of the word. I wanted to love this. And I couldn't wait to see it. But after seeing it, I didn't like it. At all.

It was suspenseful, especially the middle act. The big twist ending is easily predicted within the first 30 minutes. It’s a shame that Peele went for the suspense/twist ending again in his second run. It doesn’t work here.

Would have been a better and more suspenseful story if they just revealed the truth near the beginning of the movie instead of thinking no one will guess it right. I suppose there are countless areas of symbolism in the film, but the backstory of the antagonists is handled very ham-fistedly and leaves you shaking your head. I’ve seen worse explanations in other films, but this is pretty vague and requires major suspension of disbelief buy in. I think the movie would have been better served with a supernatural explanation vs what they actually went for.

I hope Peele doesn’t go the way of Shamaylan, continually trying to capture that same shocking twist ending in all of his movies. Just make a good suspenseful thriller, but perhaps let the audience in on the secret early in the film but hide it from the actors. Take a different angle.

I’m sure Peele will go a different direction in his next film. I suspect this movie will do well opening weekend but drop off in ticket sales second week.

It was strange to watch this movie because it felt like a lot of things were so deliberately set up through REALLY long nearly static shots, and a lot of symbolism only to sort of get brushed off in the end when the "why" is barely explained. I'm all for an ambiguous ending - but this wasn't even ambiguous, it just felt rushed and kind of lazy.

In my city, in one theater it's hogging up seven screens including the IMAX, and that is overdoing it at the expense of other films out that I'm doubtful will ever be shown locally. Having seen "Get Out", a really twisted horror tale mixed with racial commentary, I had high hopes for "Us". But I can only muster up six points because despite the great acting, requiring all the principle characters to take on double roles, and really showcasing their obvious talents, as the film progresses messily toward the final act of what is supposed to reveal the secrets behind the scenario of body doubles killing their "normal" originals, it is left up to much assumption. Yes, there are some twists here. No decent horror movie should be without them. But Peele deliberately has left far too much detail hanging - such as, who created these doubles in the first place and why? And, if, as the film suggests, they are nationwide, where the hell is law enforcement, the Army, etc.? Socially it's an odd duck. I do not know exactly what Peele is trying to imply here, unless it's facing the worst fears of anybody - ourselves. I have my faults, but I'm not afraid of myself. But if you don't sweat some obvious lacks in details and don't mind the lack of a true resolution and climax, "Us" is okay. However, another film out, "Captive State" has been criticized for not closing the plot holes, whereas I thought it did so in fine style, keeping you pinned to the seat until the very end of the film. So, if you want a thriller type movie that actually has an ending, you may want to think twice about "Us." Expand

We are introduced to the Wilsons, led by jovial patriarch Gabe (Winston Duke) andAfter his Oscar-winning directorial debut Get Out in 2017, the inimitable Jordan Peele returns with Us, a terrifying look at both personal and societal demons. We are introduced to the Wilsons, led by jovial patriarch Gabe (Winston Duke) and his reserved wife Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o), on a vacation to the beaches of Santa Cruz with their two kids (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex). Gabe’s enthusiasm for holiday hobbies is unshared by Adelaide, a victim of childhood trauma who begins to feel uneasy after a series of unnerving coincidences start to plague their idyllic trip. Her fears are not unfounded, as the family are soon terrorised by doppelgangers in what proves to be a horror thrill-ride, thoughtfully executed by Jordan Peele.
Peele is a maestro of the genre; he has an uncanny way of knowing both when to play into horror tropes and when to subvert them completely, resulting in a film that grips the audience in its unpredictability. So many elements are combined in Us; there’s old-fashioned slasher horror and classic home invasion, accompanied by the suspense and sharp comedy of Get Out. Even more satisfying, however, is Peele’s inclusion of underlying social commentary, a subtle satire perhaps echoed in the film’s title (are we talking about the pronoun or looking at a critique of U.S society?). Us may lack the deft narrative control of Get Out, but in some ways it’s an even more impressive feat of filmmaking, equally thought-provoking and thematically complex, yet more ambitious and inventive. The entire movie is shrouded in a layer of ambiguity; Peele is giving us the freedom to interpret it in whatever way we wish. Some will see Us as more of a metaphor, others as a social statement… many will also see it as simply a gorily entertaining crowd-pleaser and the film functions gloriously even as just that. It’s not without the occasional plot-hole, but if these inspire Peele to return to the ‘Us-verse’ for another film to clear up the gaps, they will all have been worth it. Us is elevated by a selection of fantastic performances, notable by the fact that every actor plays two roles, that of their character and their throat-slitting counterpart. Lupita Nyong’o is a force of silent determination as Adelaide and oozes steely creepiness as the leader of the subterranean “Tethered”, Red. Winston Duke’s Gabe is the soft-hearted master of the dad joke, yet his twin is wonderfully menacing. The two kids are fantastic and Elisabeth Moss is brilliant as always. In the third act, the film becomes slightly more unfocused, but the cast keep it buoyant with spirited performances.
Visually, the film is absolutely gorgeous, Mike Gioulakis’ cinematography making expert use of reflections as a terrifying motif to keep us on the edge of our seats. Homage is paid to other horror classics; an overhead car shot reminds one of the Torrances arriving at the Overlook in ‘The Shining’ and haunting dance interludes echo of Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Black Swan’. Even with this, Us feels like an original product, unapologetically strange and stylish. Michael Abels’ score is also a gem, an amalgamation of itchy strings, taiko drums and Satanic choirs. Jukebox choices in certain scenes are also well-judged (let’s just say, Luniz’s I Got 5 On It will have a whole new meaning).
With Us, Jordan Peele seems to have broken the sophomore curse, cementing his status as one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. It’s the kind of film where, with every return viewing, you will notice more and more clever touches that lie hidden in its rich textures. Horrifying, trenchant and unique, Us is another success from Jordan Peele.

By the end of the film everything just gets so pretentious and ridiculous you're shaking your head in disbelief. Then, seeing as you're so dumbfounded as to what just happened you have to go online to read about it and then end up shaking your head even more. And don't tell me for a second anyone giving this film a great review understood what was going on symbolically while they watched it. Underneath this political garbage there's actually quite an intense horror, which is such a shame, because if Peele just concentrated on making an entertaining, believable and coherent film instead of ramming his political agenda down our throats, we'd walk away more entertained. Another thing that let it down was the script. Why are this family making jokes whilst they're being stalked and treating it all so light heartedly? It makes the mood so jarring. Everything was great with this film until you start having things 'explained,' and then it just gets farcical. Absolute nonsense. Expand

Tightly controlled use of cameraHorror/thriller Us, about a family being attacked by duplicates of themselves, was such a unique experience for me. This is only Jordan Peele's second film and he already has a confident sense of direction. Tightly controlled use of camera angles and fine use of color and scenery are all here. The panning out opening credits has a slow, unsettling strangeness to it. As I said, this is a thriller and the whole thing has taught pacing and fight scenes.

The general story is entertainingly freaky. The duplicates, with their scary gold scissors and gloves on only one hand, are unsettling. And it isn't exactly like they're a mindless horde. Each one has a distinct, weird personality.

The script is also pretty funny at points, but the humor never feels like it is detracting from the horror.

The music by Michael Abels is also delightfully eerie. Be sure to check out the opening credits. The movie's main theme might make the list of most recognizable horror music. (It sounds a little like the main theme from Akira if you've seen that.)

The entire cast, main and supporting, is great, including, surprisingly, comedian Tim Heidecker from Adult Swim's Tim and Eric. Winston Duke is fun as the family's goofy father and Lupita Nyongo excels in creepiness as the duplicate mother.

The first act/setup is a little slow, but things run smoothly once the duplicates attack. The explanation to the duplicates' existence is a little vague. I mean the duplicate's motivations are made clear, but the logistical details of the whole thing leaves a lot of questions. Overall, i highly recommend this to people who are looking for something a little new in horror.

Was hoping for the best but felt really thought it was a popcorn thriller. I really feel it was top heavy and the payoff wasn't there in the end but it was fun!

Una bofetada en el rostro, el reparto lo hace muy bien, pero su protagonista se lleva todos los aplausos y logras sentir empatía con ella.

Imperdible, les volará la cabeza

I appreciated some of the clever ideas and writing that was in it, but ultimately found that it didn't live up to the hype too much for me. This was also kinda the case for me with this film as well. It follows a family in their summer vacation home who find themselves being terrorized by doppelgangers of themselves. Interesting concept, wasted potential. It explored these ideas more so rather than fully invested in them, which disappointed me. The character's choices and decisions were also questionable and ridiculous at times, and the ending, while clever, wasn't really much of a payoff and I felt more confused and underwhelmed by it than anything else. Overall, like I said, interesting ideas, but they didn't come together or work as well as I had hoped. Expand

This one focuses on a happy family starting a vacation near the seaside, but before long an ominous group shows up that looks exactly like them, with much more negative vibes. From there, things get fun, in a suspenseful way. The scares and violence are peppered with Peele's comic smarts. The father character (Winston Duke) is certainly channeling Peele's own style. While the concept behind the doppelgangers is promising, there are some questions marks that throw the logic off the rails a bit. Still, it's an inventive and engrossing addition to the genre. Expand

Now I come from the movie and I think I'm too hypeed ... hmm ... I do not know but I really liked it. Jordan Peele nailed it again.
Interesting story and disturbing ending (I hope it won't be a second movie).
The acting is very good (except Winston Duke ...).
Be careful during the movie because you can figure out to some extent what's going on.
It's filmed well without cheap jumpscare and sometimes it has humor but it did not really go with the tone of the film...
  Recommended!

bad movie, it does not make any sense, what it tells, what happens to the world, I almost fell asleep, at first I was laughing, but then I had more and more incongruities.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros: Cinematography, acting, set design, lighting, and the soundtrack. Cons: The story doesn't feel fully flushed-out, doesn't really make a lot of sense, and sets up so many things that have no pay off. For a film advertised to be a horror film, all of the tension in the film is lost as soon as the doppleganger family gets in the house. From there, we go on this unexpected journey that only kind of makes sense, but is ultimately unsatisfying. I think this film is worth watching, but I don't think Jordan Peele and his team was given enough time to really create a masterpiece, and instead made a very sophisticated but ultimately rushed film. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the things that made Get Out special was Jordan Peele's blend of horror and comedy. Us continues in that vein, but to a different extent. In Get Out the two aspects worked in synergy to generate each other. Every moment comedy contributed to every uneasy feeling and vice versa. Us seems to work in a similar manner only instead of being co-dependent, they seem to bolster each other. It plays all it's cards with a straight face, even when the movie delves into complete absurd, goofy, and stupid territory, it never pauses to let the viewer become self-aware. Thus never getting sucked out of the experience. Us is a roller coaster ride of different genres that blend together for an experience that's an overall delight. My only gripe is that I think the script may have needed another glance over.

*SPOILERS*
The one thing I didn't like was the ending. The twist comes at a point where it doesn't matter anymore. Who cares at that point who was a doppleganger or not? None of these dopplegangers ever show any intention of switching places verbatim with their counterparts. If characters didn't know they were dopplegangers before and acted completely normal, why should that matter? The movie doesn't give us some reason to allude they're any more or less dangerous than the anyone else and it's never touched on this possibility before or after. There's just no motivation to b frightened by this sudden realization when this character has to our knowledge, been a normal person most of their lives and had no reason to be feared before the twist was revealed. It just feels very hammed in and like a decision that could've been easily cut or revealed at a point in time when it mattered in the movie or could've been given a consequence that had impact on the dynamic of the story.
