Us looks good and has an amazing central performance by Lupita Nyong'o but the story is extremely banal and the whole film unravels into silliness as it ambles towards a conclusion, eschewing true horror for cheesy satirical humor and meta parody. For only being Peele’s second film, the director has remarkably already found his voice. The camerawork is subtle; never drawing attention to itself, but still technically proficient. Cinematographer Mike Gioulakis (It Follows, Glass) proves to be instrumental to the film as much of the tension and unease developed is done thanks to his understated, methodical camerawork.
Speaking of which, the tone is easily the strongest part of the movie. Peele channels David Lynch in this movie by creating a feeling of unease and peril that emanates out of every frame. This is largely helped along by the nervy, string-driven soundtrack by Michael Abels, who scored Peele’s previous film ‘Get Out’. While all performances in the film are great, the standout by far is Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave); whose clone serves as the matriarchal leader for the doubles. Her performance is spasmodic and inhuman and considering the minimalistic makeup on her, the terror inspired by the character relies solely on Nyong’o’s charisma.
The film does have its fair share of flaws, though, and though the script is largely well done, there are a couple of distracting plot-holes and unnecessary twists that end up being more head-scratching than engaging. Also, during the third act of the film, the terror set up in the first two acts are largely lost in favour of tension. Some may also be disappointed if they are expecting the layered, satire of 2017’s ‘Get Out’ as this film is fairly surface-level in its message.
None of these flaws are fatal, though, and as when one considers how filmmakers have performed in the past whilst trying to follow up their breakout hits, ‘Us’ is a rare, pleasant surprise in the sense that the drop in quality between films is nearly invisible. Jordan Peele is slowly proving himself to be one of the most exciting filmmakers to surface in the last few years and he certainly has ‘us’ engaged.

The plot twist was greatly played out, however made some earlier scenes confusing and incorrect (although it may align in a second watch through) other than that the movie was generally good from the eerie music and well thought out camera angles (for most of the film) the movie although not scary brought tension and a sense of curiosity to the watcher. Overall if you are looking for a scary and adrenaline rush film this definitely isn't for you, but if you are looking for an intriguing and tension filled film requiring you to think and figure out what is going on, I definitely recommend you give this one a try. The performances are good, but the passing didn't work at all and it also has a serious problem of tone, the 1st half is like a slasher film with all the suspense and jump scares, as for the 2nd half the thing is more like a dark comedy and neither is really well done. There are a lot of symbolism and things that will make you have a second thought about the plots and things within this movie but that's it.

An effective socio-political thriller looking at issues of class and privilege

There's a detail to be found in writer/director Jordan Peele's second feature, Us, which gives you a good idea of the amount of thought that has gone into the film. In the opening scene, set in 1986, a young girl walks into a hall of mirrors, with a sign outside proclaiming "Find yourself", and a picture of a Native American above the door. Later in the film, now in the present day, the same hall of mirrors is seen, the same "Find yourself" is seen, but now the picture of the Native American has been replaced with a wizard. This change represents a meaningless and superficial attempt to tackle society's discomfort with its violent history, and this, in turn, speaks directly to one of the film's most salient themes - the US (or us) is a country built on violence, racism, and oppression, but as long as such things are swept under the carpet and no one talks about them, then there's no need to worry. Peele very much wants people to start talking about them.

The film tells the story of the Wilson family - Adelaide (an astounding Lupita Nyong'o), Gabe (Winston Duke), Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) and Jason (Evan Alex) - who one night whilst vacationing in Santa Cruz are confronted by their violent doppelgängers.

One of the problems with parsing the film is that so many of the socio-political themes are tied to who the doppelgängers are and what they want, that it's difficult to discuss them without spoilers. So, small spoiler ahead - the doppelgängers are called the Tethered; essentially, they are an underground-dwelling race of lookalikes. Through no fault of their own, they are deprived of the opportunities those above the surface have access to. The allegorical dimension couldn't be clearer; the film is a parable about class division. The Wilsons represent a middle-class all-American family; the Tethered represent the underclass, those without access to privileges, despite possessing the same capacity for happiness and success. This similarity is driven home when Adelaide asks Red (her Tethered) who they are, and Red answers (truthfully), "we're Americans."

In this sense, the film is very much about marginalisation. And this speaks to perhaps the film's most important point - the destitute and discriminated against can succeed just as much as everyone else if only they're given the opportunity to do so. This is also alluded to in the powerful final shot, which reveals that the Tethered have accomplished something which the surface dwellers once attempted but failed. The Tethered are the ignored, those swept under the rug of society, just like the alteration to the picture above the hall of mirrors. True, the deeper Peele explores the Tethered, the more insurmountable logistical problems are thrown up, and the further he strains credibility. However, this is not as detrimental as it may sound.

Even more so than Get Out, Us is aesthetically gorgeous, with Mike Gioulakis's cinematography especially impressive. An illustrative scene features the rare use of a split diopter, a tool favoured by Brian De Palma that allows both foreground and background subjects to stay in focus simultaneously. Using it in a crucial scene towards the end of the film, it is the only time we see Adelaide and Red's faces in the same shot at the same time, with Red shot in BCU, facing away from Adelaide, who stands behind her.

In terms of acting, Nyong'o's nuanced work as Adelaide and Red is a clinic in contrasts. Apart from their appearance, nothing about the two is similar; their posture, their facial expressions, how they talk, how they walk, how they react to things around them, how they use their hands. Adelaide, a former ballet dancer, is graceful and elegant, whereas Red is automaton-like, her movements almost staccato.

As for problems, there are a few. Aside from the insurmountable practical issues with the Tethered, my biggest issue was that every time the Tethered want to kill someone, they do so immediately. However, they pass up multiple opportunities to kill the Wilsons, which is an irritating inconsistency. Additionally, the final twist doesn't really work, feeling like something of a twist for twist's sake that was never fully integrated into the narrative.

These small problems notwithstanding, Us is an impressive film that improves on Get Out in almost every way, and which serves as a more complete artistic statement. The Tethers are monsters because they have been left with little choice other than to become monsters, imprisoned by a system they had no part in creating and in which they are not allowed to participate. In Get Out, Peele took a story of bodily possession and moulded it into a story of black/white relations. In Us, he demonstrates that oppression can easily cross racial boundaries. And the real horror of this is to be found in humanity's inhumanity to one another.

"If you wanna get crazy, we can get crazy.."

That moment when you trying to sound tough, but come across as doing a Christopher Walken impression.

Anywhere…

‘US’ is no horror masterpiece, but does not waste an excellent concept in terms of execution and the talent involved. The film creeps into your thoughts long after leaving the cinema and already that’s an achievement. This is Jordan Peele’s second feature movie that takes a horror trope of a family in peril and goes “but what if...”. While the movie dose stick with you long after it’s done, you slowly reflect on things that don’t make sense when given some thought. However, I will take original concepts any day.

Lupita Nyong'o is absolutely terrific as the troubled mother with a mysterious past and the unnerving doppelganger Red. The differences in her performance with facial, vocal, movement and how she carried herself throughout the movie looked effortless. Toni Collette delivered the best performance of last year with ‘Hereditary’, and this year is Lupita. I also make this comparison as the sad reality that Lupita will likely be overlooked by the Academy Awards the same as the Collette, because the labeled genre horror - damn shame.

The child actors (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex) were both pretty good, especially during the scenes when they looked terrified and how they both played the doppelgangers. I find it amusing to see Winston Duke playing the comedic relief compared to his past roles so far, which I got most of the chuckles from.

The score was very unique to say the least. The mixture on modern, classics and original compose music resulted in a fascinating approach that manage to elevate the intensity even more. The cinematography is visually striking with the use of shadows and colors that models the film’s presence.

Jordan Peele manages to juggle so many ideas with social commentary, themes, horror, trauma, America, ect. I can’t progress how peculiar Peele’s career has shifted and suddenly becoming the most promising voice in horror, if he chooses to continue with this genre or explore different things. I just hope we don’t have another M. Night Shyamalan situation where frame goes to one’s head.

For issues: I wish the film was more ambiguous and didn’t explain itself towards the end, especially the last shot. Some of the humor deflates the tension in inappropriate segments that stopped me from scared. As I said before, the film juggles so many ideas, although at times feels like it’s saying too little.

Other than that, I still think this is a strong follow up to ‘Get Out’ and I’ll see Peele’s next movie no matter what.

Overall rating: Watch yourself.

While the film was obviously trying to keep its audience mind blown with the plot and twists i was too busy being mind blown how this movie kept taking itself to new levels of **** the more i watched it. The film started out promising but takes a turn for the worst. Did Jordan Peele even watch his own film? I wish i could get my god damn money back, i nearly walked out but stayed hoping for an ending that might justify buying the ticket only to be disappointed by the predictable twist that a **** film like this would take. Every minute i was baffled by the direction of the film, just saying why the hell...? I liked the characters but that was about it. Other than that it was a poorly constructed film. Not really scary, more strange than anything, strange can be good but I don't think they leaned into it enough to payoff.

Lots of laughing by the audience at things that probably weren't meant to be funny.

The "twist" was kind of lame, you can see it coming a mile away; it begs questions that have no good answers and it adds nothing to the movie, would have been much better had they just not addressed it at all.

It’s bigger than anything we’ve seen the genre do for a long time, and inarguably not as universally pleasing as Peele’s prior feature. And yet, this is what makes Us such an immensely satisfying work. This is a fresh-faced director returning from an unmitigated triumph, proving to us he has more complex, challenging ideas behind him. Us lacks the surprise of Get Out, but makes up for it by being a denser, more ambitious feature. Comparing the two already feels like a losing battle. Stellar acting is hampered by deliberate character ambiguity regarding the motives of the doubles; the movie flip flops between musing over the humanism of these "monsters" and elsewhere reducing them to mindless zombies. Unfortunately, this insistence on both having and eating the cake comes at a cost to the otherwise very compelling metaphor underpinning the film, and turns what should be a jaw-dropping final twist into a brow-furrowing moment of discontent. Peele's social commentary is at times outstanding, and Us also has plenty of truly excellent horror moments, but these two things as a rule never occur in the same scene. Us hits all the bases for modern Western psychological horror (regretfully, even the "enormous unexplained plot holes" base) but the ambition of Peele's concept is held back by his inability to execute it gracefully. The same movie would be much better without amateurish hallmarks like ham-fisted dad jokes, ambiguous sci-fi cop-outs, and immersion-breaking monologues explaining enormous portions of plot. Expand

There are so many more creative ways he could've answered "why" any of the things in the story were taking place and it seems like he took the least inspired route. It's not a terrible movie, but it really frustrates me when people make this movie out to be an instant classic, because the last one obviously was.

Literally nothing makes sense or pays off in a satisfying way. I love Tim Heidecker, but his presence only adds to the feel that this could've easily been a feature length Tim & Eric's Bedtime Stories, and would've met all expectations.

The story is not compelling, which is what I think most people would've expected most after Get Out, which at no point felt confusing or random. This movie is the exact opposite of that. It never commits to either an ideological or story driven concept except "There are mirror people" and I can't say anything else without spoiling the movies, but the reasons for _why_ there are mirror people never really pays off, though it is explained. It's just not a very satisfying conclusion.

So if the ending is weak, what's left? Not a lot of good laughs. uniquely good scary moments, or even memorable moments. It's not a movie you're going to want to watch twice.

Anyone giving this movie a 10 is pushing an agenda or is working for the guerrilla marketing campaign that badly upsold this movie. Anyone using words like "thought provoking" or "genre defining" or "richly layered, deftly nuanced" are absolutely lying to your face. There is nothing thought provoking about this movie. There is no moral message in this movie.

I looks like the author start writing horror script but in the middle of doing it changed his mind and continued writing trash comedy. Hotestly, in the beginning it was horror but afterwards you cannot scare a 5 year old child with this! The script is flat and full of holes, but it is unrealistic even for a low budget horror (which is not, by the way). Again - you cannot compassionate with characters at all because everything happening around them is so stupid that it becomes fun, and after some time you get bored. But, hold on - in the end you get such a terrible twist in the tale that you will not believe your eyes. Somebody here wrote it was obvious. No. I also thought while watching this, that it may end up like this, but was sure it is too much even for this movie. No, it was not. The director really did it. With US director Jordan Peel has tapped into our anxiety for the other. Be it aliens from across the border or some other unknown phantom threat. The movie is like a mirror and makes us look at our selves. We are our own worst enemy. So far so good. What bogs the film down a bit is the complexity of plot details to make it al work as one coherent story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I felt it fitting that my first ever review of a movie be this one. I simply could not let it lie the disappointment I felt once the credits began to roll. Although the relief was equally welcomed. What makes it worse is the disparity in review scores between your average movie goer and the "professional" critics. There seems to be a clear delusion that I can only assume is influenced by other external factors as opposed to sheer honesty and merit. This film holds its own, briefly, at the beginning. A small prologue of events paves the way for several minutes of mystery and curiosity of what is to come. This very quickly leads forward to the scene, everyone has seen in the trailers, where there "is a family on the driveway". From then onwards it spirals into a tornado of flawed plot holes and complete identity crisis. I sincerely felt as if the film had a complete meltdown and had no idea what it wanted to give to me. The characters fall short of providing any form of adrenaline inducing horror and, on more than several occasions, become laughable. Caveman noises, and screeching like dinosaurs, is about as odd as it gets. If I had shut my eyes, I would have been convinced I had gone back to 1993 to watch Jurassic Park for the first time. I specifically remember the part where Winston Dukes character has a tumble with his shadowy counterpart, pulls himself out of the lake onto his boat, and stops with just one foot dangling into the murky abyss thus allowing his attacker to leap from the water and carry on his assault (Surprise!) .... The comedic gasp from the movie screen echoed as if to say, "Are you kidding me with this cliché rubbish that has been done to absolute death". From that point I felt the audience, in unison, switched off. I certainly did.

The stronger performances were overshadowed by the flat storyline which struggles to gain any traction for the best part of 80% of the movie. This ultimately leads onto the most glaringly obvious “twist” I have ever witnessed. You wouldn’t need Holmes along for the ride to figure this one out. A lot was left unexplained and not in a good way, in the way where you think “what was the point”. Plenty could have been sacrificed to offer a more reinforced backstory and offer the depth this tale so desperately needed. I genuinely had high hopes for this movie. I really wanted to like it and love it. And I persevered throughout but the inevitable white flag moment came and, once the movie ended, I was happy to surrender back to reality, somewhat deflated at the missed opportunity.
The cast deserved much more from the narrative, and direction, to support and showcase their skills but unfortunately it was not meant to be. I seriously doubt I would watch this a second time as I feel there is nothing more that can be offered. If you are on your way to watch this then I recommend you lower your expectations to allow for a modicum of enjoyment, otherwise choose something else.

The short review: A good, not great, horror/thriller that did not fully succeed due to the lack of plausibility (for me). Related media: There's no related media to this film (but I have seen the excellent Get Out).

What's it like?: The film asks what would happen if there is doppelganger out there for each of us that wants to kill us to take over our lives.

Positives:

1) As with Get Out, this film is an edge-fo-the-seat horror/thriller that has an interesting plot. 2)The twist at the end is good stuff.

Negatives: 1) However, the twist at the end does not match up with how Lupita's character had been behaving for some parts of the story. A main question is, why did she have a holiday home, or allow her husband to buy a holiday home in Santa Cruz, considering what she knows, and I am referring to the twist?

2) Several questions on the creation of the clones, such as who, why and how, need to be explained to make the plot plausible.

3) More questions on why the clones are so murderous, how did they know where to find their doppelgangers (the 'real' people), as well as what they are doing at the end of the film needs answering.

How would the different age groups rate it?

Children: (Not rated for kids)

Teens: Excellent

Young adults: Excellent Medium age adults: Good

Old adults: Good Rating: 4/5 (no half scores). It is worth it to watch it in the cinema.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. BLACK MANTA AND STARFIRE FROM TITANS ARE A COUPLE IN THIS MOVIE. WHAT? But then again… Nakia and M'Baku are also a couple in this one,so…
Also,Spoilers,I think?

What can be said that has already been said? (Since 2017,again…) Coming from a genuine comedian,Us is the second hit in a row for Writer/Director Jordan Peele, even if that means he’s upping the ante for this one. Big locations, big scope,no more limits for screenwriting, and actors/actresses get the chance to play themselves, but so rigid and over-the-top at the same time. It’s all ambitious and amazing to look at...Maybe a little too ambitious…
There are a lot of comparisons you can make with Get Out,actually. For example the “main character/-s move to a new place, only to find out something’s wrong”,or the insane 3rd Act Plot Twist mumbo jumbo.
The Sound Mix on this thing is also amazing. Being done in Dolby Atmos,it’s predictable, but oh hell,if this is one spacious, dynamic and aggressive mix. For a Horror Movie,at that! Easily going to be a showcase when it comes out on Blu-Ray.
The Doppelgangers part of the movie are a threatening presence without being threatening, but just calm and insane,to the point to where one of the kids is a pet to them. They have a motivation, but it's sort of a weird one. Oh,and did I mention that the kids in this are really solid? No annoying kids shtick,at last!
The main cast is also great, but that's to be expected from a star-studded cast with Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke, who's basically me,but black. I loved him in this movie so much...
But the Screenplay and Story are just great. Not amazing… Like Get Out,it shares the same problem where it's this movie that narrates a pretty good story with an interesting message and some intense sequences, but wait,it's also a Horror,so they'll throw some scary scenes that work on so many levels. (Or maybe I'm not really one for Horror movies…)
And also sometimes, all of a sudden,it's a Marvel Movie. Do you know in those movies where the comedy is also sprinkled in moments where it's not supposed to happen? Well, get ready for a truckload of those in this movie! The Comedy is,sometimes, all over the place, and while it's super funny,it's kind of distracting from the main picture. And no,I didn't get the 3rd Act villain motivation. That's the part where the Screenplay felt too ambitious. Same thing for the Shyamalan-ific Plot Twist at the end. What was all of that?
Plot twists aside,Us is still a great time at the movies. It's a horror on a grander scale (with $10 Million+) that is really impressive until the 3rd Act.
Definitely go see it,but beware of the plot twists,I think?

This movie isn't so good as Get Out, but it's still very wonderful. In ten years' time, maybe we will see about 8 more wonderful movie from Jordan Peele than this one!

Us is a decent horror movie that provided plenty of chilling scenes, and even a few laughs, but compared to Jordan Peele's debut 'Get Out' it feels a little unoriginal and the intended social commentary isn't as effective.

Interesting film but as with his last film there is a radical turn in the second half of the film when he switches from psychological horror to more of a sci-fi genre fit.
I suppose he left this open for a sequel with many questions left unanswered.

You thought one way, the movie went another way revealed the trick of where you assumed wrong like a magician. The low budget didn't spoil its cleverness and fun. In comes "Us" with an even creepier atmosphere but also features stronger political imagery. Sadly, while there are big points for a creepy style, visuals and a terrific performance by Lyong'o, the story is too clever for itself. It leads you into misdirection from the beginning and completely forgetting that it's supposed to resolve why you thought right and the film swung left. The big reveal does not resolve at all. It laughs in the face of the viewer trying to make sense of why anyone would act the way they would if you knew from the movie's outset. The answer is that the actions of the characters are based upon false assumptions. And this is why you'll see so many dislike and are frustrated by this movie.

Case in point without spoilers. Why would a family stand still, without movement, for a long time in the driveway of a family's home? A: Because that's what all low budget creepy crappy slasher films do in order to create "an atmosphere" of terror. And the film's reveal about who the victims are in this film are just as wooden, hollow and phony. Had this film been less a vehicle of praise by liberal reviewers (who are clearly terrified to say anything critical about a certain niche of directors and actors), this film would have received a 5 at best for a great atmosphere, great Lyong'o, and a lousy, illogical, sloppy, lazy script by a director who had a certain class of people and nationalities to blame and let social media loose with its insipid insinuations. The number of plot holes and illogic is literally in the dozens and it's very disappointing that it's all style with no substance or consistency. My review - fun to watch the first 2/3, a frustrating reveal and not a movie you'll watch again.

Flashes of excellence aren't enough to make up for an illogical, disjointed narrative that too often falls into mindless gore (slasherdom) for its own sake. Very disappointing—I was a big fan of Get Out.

Corny dialogue, a half baked plot, sub-par suspense. While this movie isn't terrible it certainly isn't great. It's a so-so outing that isn't very memorable.

"US" & "THEM"
Hailing from MADtv and veering off into the critically acclaimed series, Key&Peele, Jordan Peele loves a good story. More than that, he loves getting his hands dirty writing a good thriller. Unfortunately, to his quiet desperation all grapes of concept have been stomped and pressed in ways that only with ‘sleight of pen-in-hand’ will another writer be able to work around a plagiaristic endeavor … kind of, unnoticed. Then again, not quite, for plagiarism of concept for just about everything is inevitable resulting in triggering our recall compatibility and overwhelming déjà vu sense of familiarity. “Haven’t we all been in here before?”

Needless to say, it has hardly ever stopped the long arm of the shoplifter which extends beyond that of the law. And it did not stop Peele from lifting off the concept of “THE INVITATION” two years prior to his 2017 release ; WHITE boyfriend with BLACK girlfriend driving along to an invitation that turns out to be a cult gathering. On the way they crash into a deer (jump scare thrown in for good measure) and kill it.

However, in Peele’s “GET OUT” the genders are reversed ; BLACK boyfriend with WHITE girlfriend driving along to an invitation that turns out to be a cult gathering. On the way they crash into a deer (jump scare thrown in for good measure) and kill it.

By the way, did I mention this is a rip-off?

Yet with all that glaring similarity in plain sight little did we stop to sense the blast wave of déjà vu but proceeded to carry the director on our shoulders with the victory chant of originality. That said, Peele’s gone and done it again with his 2019 release, “Us”. He had subtly-blatantly plagiarized the concept of “THE OTHERS” (Nicole Kidman, 2001) with more emphasis on jump scares to make up for the lack of intellectual content, complete with a supposed, but highly implausible twist at the end.

His title, “Us” being a derivation of the ‘Us and Them’ phrase is a dead giveaway in the parallel storyline of “THE OTHERS”. Case in point of ‘sleight of hand’ writing is having substituted the title, “THE OTHERS” … with “Us”. The result is a hybrid of New York arty-farty, pretentious avant-garde and “WALKING DEAD” theatrics glazed over with the idiotrics of Shyamalan’s epic foiled “THE HAPPENING”.

This is nothing but a been-there-done-that flick which is survived solely by Michael Abels’ thunderous soundtrack. Jordan’s gargantuan persona shaped and gained by the mastery of shocking socio-racial content in “GET OUT” has reduced and relegated him back to the quirky comedian [horror-director-wannabe] which is Key&Peele.

Good acting? Lupita Nyongo (though some of her parts under Jordan Peele’s over-the-top direction may have made her look stupid)

Bad acting? Get that father and son, Winston Duke & Evan Alex off the set!

Highlights of movie: Every single time Michael Abels score comes on. And, oh yes … the clear high voice of Brian Wilson accompanied by the iconic Hammond organ when “Good Vibration” is played.

Enjoyable part of movie experience: Trailer of "PET SEMATARY" before the movie started.

It is the poetry of the symbols that make this movie great. Think what it means that they look exactly like us. Why? And why: All in red, prison uniforms, underground, barely speak, act weird and wrong, aggrieved and violent, say they're "Americans", cut the nation in half. Are they the tortured soul of black folks? Of America? Of outer vs inner self? of our current politics? All of these meanings shimmer and shift, like in a poem, and don't resolve. It's about the soul of America in 2019 the way "Waiting for Godot" was about the soul of Europe in the 20th Century. Judging this film by the scares or thrills or mythology is to miss the good stuff. I was a huge fan of Get Out, so I had to go see this, naturally, assuming it would be just as good as its predecessor. I was unfortunately hit with a movie that garnered more laughs from the audience than scares. The plot was more of a mockery, like Scream or Scary Movie and that's not at all what Peele intended it to be. The performances were good (Particularly from Nyong'o) and the soundtrack was stellar, just like Get Out. Sadly, this can't make up for a boring, unoriginal plot. The movie was not very engaging, but it had its memorable moments and it wasn't absolutely awful. Honestly, Annihilation is a similar but much better movie than this, so I recommend watching that instead. Expand

I really liked Get Out & was hoping this would be as good, but it was one of the worst moviesI've never written a review, but this movie was so awful and the critics so wrong, I felt morally obligated to save people from wasting their money. I really liked Get Out & was hoping this would be as good, but it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. There were so many fundamental plot holes I couldn't stop thinking of them for hours. Spoilers ahead, so don't read this if you want to see this movie, but I suggest you do not. Who created all the duplicates and where did they go? How, exactly are the duplicates controlling the actions and thoughts of people. If the duplicates can control every movement of humans than why did they need to go up to the surface and kill them? They could make them commit suicide or murder each other. They could make humans torture themselves from a comfortable distance. What was the purpose of controlling human's every tiny action and thought? They didn't seem to be doing anything particularly meaningful with this power. How would the millions of them shown holding hands across America fit in the basement of that building? Why were they standing holding hands anyway? Is that as far as their master plan takes them? I'm trying to imagine Nyong'o's character talking the duplicates into doing this--"Hey, lets get revenge on the people we are controlling by murdering them with scissors and then stand holding hands across America" (What?!) Why did they suddenly stop killing people? There were clearly more humans to kill (somebody was flying those helicopters at the end). Had American law enforcement and military capabilities deteriorated to the point they couldn't kill duplicates with scissors? Had all the guns in the U.S. disappeared? Where did they get all those scissors and those silly red jump suits anyway? There was nothing to eat but rabbits for the duplicates in the basement...but who was feeding the rabbits and where did they get the food for them? Why were the rabbits there in the first place? Where is all the rabbit poop? Why would the Nyong'o struggle to get a fireplace poker to break the coffee table she was handcuffed to? It's a coffee table-it's not bolted to the floor-just slide it over. The "surprise ending" occurred to me at the beginning of the movie. Speaking of the surprise ending, how are we supposed to believe the duplicate Nyong'o would have repressed her memory of being a duplicate? Repressed memories and PTSD occur after traumatic circumstances. Her switching places to enter a much better world would be something to celebrate--there's no reason for amnesia. To be fair, there were moments when the cinematography was very good (ie. the shot of the shadows walking on the beach--yes, I got the symbolism). The beginning was suspenseful, I couldn't be surprised or afraid after about 20-30 minutes, though, because the ridiculous plot quickly became so distracting. I can't figure out why anyone could rate this movie highly. Expand

It's a first-rate horror film that tackles relevant social and political issues in a manner that allows it to be both deep and entertaining. ThoseJordan Peele's Get Out is one of the most immaculately crafted directorial debuts of all time. It's a first-rate horror film that tackles relevant social and political issues in a manner that allows it to be both deep and entertaining. Those hoping to find the same kind of thematic timeliness here are not likely to be disappointed. They may, however, take issue with the delivery. Peele clearly has a lot on his mind and spreads himself too thin trying to cram it all into one movie. Us is littered with so many symbolic possibilities such as classism, race, and the dual hidden nature of humanity (among so much more) that it's hard to pull any sort of cohesive message from it at all. He manages to briefly touch on each of these topics, but never manages to make them come together in a way that actually says anything.

Us may be unfocused subtext-wise, but it's only marginally less valuable because of it. The moment-to-moment action is so good that it's incredibly easy to overlook the contextual and narrative deficiencies, like how the plot twist is really just a big plot hole. To put it simply, I think Us is even more fun than Get Out.

It's hard for me to not walk away from most horror-comedies disappointed as they tend to lean too far on one extreme more often than not. Us manages to be the rare exception that acts as the perfect marriage between the two genres. Both styles come off as complimentary, never serving to pull power away from the other. The film ends up being both hilarious and freaky as a result.

It does a lot to help keep the fairly familiar home invasion/slasher action fresh, but the imaginative premise and excellent dual performance from Lupita Nyong'o that are the real heavy lifters here. In reference to the latter, I'm hearing a lot of people call her performance award worthy. I personally wouldn't go that far, but her work here is impressive. Especially as the creepy and menacing doppelganger.

Peele also makes the most of the concept by once again crafting a slew of unforgettable, unsettling, and inventive scenarios and situations. I'm not just talking about the more violent or bizarre set pieces either. The smaller, more atmospheric touches matter just as much. Like the usage of Michael Abels' score for example. The songs pop up in the most unexpected of ways. Think you'll never listen to I Got 5 on It in the same way again? Try hearing N.W.A's F*ck tha Police without getting chills after this.

Us isn't perfect and is nowhere near as focused as Get Out was. Yet, it's another standout work from a man who already proved himself to be one of the best talents in the genre after only one film. His second effort only bolsters that reputation. There's more to find fault with for sure, but that didn't stop from walking out of that theater having had a really good time.
