Ok, so yes, we have been here before. Nonetheless, the film was still an entertaining ride for lovers of sci-fi and horror genres. It has all the prerequisites of jump-scares and gore for a relaxing Saturday afternoon of movie watching.

Folks dispute the acting abilities of Kristen Stewart, but in this role I found her to be focused and action-oriented, showing caring and sacrifice for the well-being of others, and gritty determination under pressure. The premise of the movie is certainly compelling, the pitch-black depths of the ocean remain unpierced to humanity as we obsess upwards to space, driven by billionaire egos. There are secrets below which we may never uncover, and some we certainly should not. There are also accusations of riffing off Alien, and some are valid, especially along the lines of embryo design, ship/suit aesthetics etc. But similarities stop there, the movie stands unique. Lovecraft left behind a deeply disturbing mythos of the sleeping old one Cthulhu, and this is perhaps the only movie to bring that to life in an appropriate scale and majesty. My fear of the deep dark is renewed. Expand

A surprisingly really good sci fi movie. I had low expectations. I thought I would be annoyed by kristen Stewart but she was ok in the role. Just a couple corny lines but otherwise movie was good and understated.

In theory, this had disaster written all over it (literally and metaphorically) - Kristen Stewart in an Alien rip off made for the remake generation. I had low expectations, but was proven wrong.

The first plus point, it was a brisk 95 minutes long, which meant it started and didn’t really stop until it stopped. There was no time for inane dialogue from hapless idiot characters, that could only be written by and appeal to twelve-year old’s.

As a regular last-man standing monster movie, I felt it tried hard not to give us too many clichés. There was no forced confrontation between two macho types, or too many headless chicken panic scenes. Ok, so Kristen Stewart was her usual mono-emotion self, but I could live with that because the script didn’t call for anything else. I loved the look of the film. The suits they wore and the claustrophobic feel of the sets, the murky water, it all gelled well.

The biggest minus for me was the monsters. Not scary. Floppy, squidy, gangly things aren’t creepy, they just look daft. Also, the end was a bit lame. Two odd little things I noticed – there was no toothpaste on Kristen’s toothbrush at the very beginning, and I’m sure I heard a sound bite from Alien in one of the early control room scenes.

All in all this deserved more than the critical thrashing that it got. Did it sink or swim? It swam, albeit with a desperate doggie paddle at times.

Well, let's just say Kristen Stewart does not have too many facial expressions but I still liked her performance. The female lead is also a nod to "Alien", I guess. And I also understand the criticism of the visuals and audio being blurry and unintelligible. That indeed made it more realistic and atmospheric but I wished they had used it more sparingly. Expand

A well-made creature-feature; it may not be original, but it is entertaining

Underwater was shot in early 2017 and then sat on a shelf for over two years. Now that it's finally seeing the light of day in the January release window - a period traditionally dominated by duds and cast-offs; films the studios don't care about for one reason or another. A recent high-profile example is Blackhat, Michael Mann's underrated 2015 cyber-terrorism drama. However, much like Blackhat, Underwater is considerably better than most January releases. Sure, it's clichéd and predictable, and it shamelessly borrows from a litany of superior genre films, but it's also a very entertaining and enjoyable aquatic creature-feature.

At an unspecified point in the future, humans are attempting to drill into the ocean floor at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, almost seven miles down. As the film begins, the station is hit by a series of unexplained vibrations, causing a cascading pressure breach. Norah (Kristen Stewart) and Rodrigo (Mamoudou Athie) manage to escape and seal off the area so as to slow, but not prevent the inevitable implosion of the whole station. Shortly, they encounter other survivors – Cpt. Lucian (Vincent Cassel), Paul (T.J. Miller), Liam (John Gallagher, Jr.), and Emily (Jessica Fenwick). Lucien says their only hope of escape is to use pressurised suits to walk the one-mile distance to the drilling station and use the escape pods located there. And so they descend to the dark ocean floor. However, they soon discover that they aren't alone.

Written by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad, and directed by William Eubank, Underwater walks a very fine line between rip-off and homage. The most obvious touchstones are Alien (1979) and The Abyss (1989), but one can also see the influence of films such as Leviathan (1989), Event Horizon (1997), Sphere (1998), and Sunshine (2007). In short, the set-up is your classic "group of isolated people getting picked off one by one".

Kicking into high-gear immediately, the opening scene is the initial implosion, and it's a good five minutes before things calm down. In essence, Underwater is the inverse of Alien in this respect, with all hell breaking loose before we know anything about anyone. Indeed, the only character we even see before the implosion is Norah. I wouldn't want every film to open this way, but it has an undeniable kineticism and appealing volatility, which Eubank does a decent job of maintaining throughout the next 95 minutes.

Aesthetically, there's a lot to like here. Production designer Naaman Marshall does a fine job, with the world feeling lived-in and authentic. Making especially good use of tunnels and low ceilings, there's a real sense of claustrophobia. This is aided immensely by Bojan Bazelli's cinematography. During scenes outside, he often shoots from within the characters' helmets, and even when the characters are inside, he often shoots in tight close-ups, heightening the sense of enclosure. When outside, the film uses the limited visibility to its advantage in establishing a tone of ominous danger. Some will probably find these scenes too dark, but I'd argue that that is precisely the point; the characters can't see much of anything, and neither can we.

Elsewhere, obviously inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, particularly Cthulhu, Abner Marín's creature design is suitably creepy and grotesque. The aesthetic element that really stood out for me, however, was Wayne Lemmer's sound design. The implosion scenes are accompanied with some bone-rattling LFE, whilst the ominous ambient sounds of the station are a constant reminder that it's on its last legs. The scenes outside are equally as impressive, with some excellent use of directional sound - it's a film that I would imagine will sound incredible on a 7.1.2 Atmos system.

In terms of problems, well, it isn't really about much of anything. There's a vague ecological theme that's brought up a couple of times, but it never amounts to anything even half-way substantial. There's also next to no characterisation. We learn bits and pieces about Norah and Lucien's backstories, but apart from that, the film is peopled by perfunctory cardboard cut-outs. There's also a rather unjustified use of voiceover to bookend things, and at times, Eubank seems somewhat confused as to whether he's making a disaster movie or a monster movie.

Underwater never manages to rise anywhere near the heights of films such as Alien and Sunshine, but it still deserved better treatment than it received from the studio. Given the January release, the clichéd setup, the two-year limbo, and the bland title, I wasn't expecting much from this, but I was pleasantly surprised. It won't change your life, but it's an entertaining and well-made creature-feature.

The film has a stunning visual range. All these wetsuits, cabins, water depths, and the overall dynamics of the story carried me like a turbo.

• The creators of the film from the first minutes, without going into details and details of what is happening, twists the viewer into the abyss of events. And because of this, the General narrative and empathy for all the characters suffers. Of which there are only seven. Cassel scenario, although it takes an important role, but the dialogues and participation with him, like a cat did not cry. Drags the entire Kristen Stewart movie. I personally am very pleased to see how much she has grown professionally in terms of acting. Grew up, prettier and leveled up skill.

• It is impossible not to mention the juiciest sound and soundtrack. But it is, in principle, be heard still on the trailer. A real treat for my ears. In places, the music is very similar to the OST "blade Runner 2049".

• I don't know what medicine critics got the idea that this is some kind of carbon copy of "Alien." In" Under water", the monster (monsters) and people do not feel like a "predator - prey (victim)"scheme. "Underwater" is 80% action movie, and the remaining 20% action Thriller. "Alien" was more about survival, history, and characters. The General mood, what is happening on the screen and "familiarity" with monsters in" Underwater " takes place in a different pattern. Kristen Stewart's character was dubbed Amanda Ripley... What? From where such thoughts? How are they fixed? And then all the spectators grabbed this banner and dragged it to the masses. "Under water" is a completely independent work.

• The movie has problems with the script and opening characters, but everything about sound, action, Kristen Stewart and the overall visual is just SUPER! I'll go to IMAX next week. What I recommend to you!

They pay reference to “underwater gods” and creatures from H.P Lovecraft’s writings and think that in itself is awesome because I have yet to see a movie like that on the big screen. The camera work was a bit iffy at times, but I felt it made the movie feel more real. It does have a few bumps in the road in terms of story, but it sure is entertaining. This a good example of a movie knowing exactly what it's audience wants and how to achieve it. From the concept alone you know your in for some B-movie style horror and the film doesn't waste time and gives you just that. The acting is also pretty solid especially the performance given by Kristen Stewart, who plays our main character Nora. Plus the film just looks amazing it captures the darkness of the bottom of the ocean wonderfully. However the film has one major problem, that being it's story is bland and almost non-existent and the set up is vary stereotypical. Yet this doesn't bother me. I have no explanation for this other than the fact that I like horror movies like this. In conclusion if you like horror than you could do worse than this film. Expand

Very disaster film-esque, it has some accurate and shocking moments for the dangers of going so deep underwater and contending with the tremendous pressure of the ocean. My biggest complaint is that many times I couldn’t tell what was going on visually with most of the “action” type sequence and scenes. This was because of the accuracy they strived for in the visuals making it so dark. It works well for the atmosphere, but it felt somewhat abusive in respect to how some movies just start shaking the camera to act like something is happening. This would be shaken camera in the dark I guess. The design of the sets/location are fantastic as well as the costumes. The big suits they wear are great and whoever’s responsible for the creation of them should be proud. A minor complaint is in the sound design. Not the overall sound design, but one specific moment. Movies are starting to borrow ideas from gaming and one that doesn’t translate well, mostly because the film makers don’t ask why they should or shouldn’t use it, is the in scene voice over “Welcome too...”advertising trope. It where you just set foot in some business or company and you hear a voice narrating a welcome message describing what the company does to fill in back story. It wasn’t necessary and kind of distracted from the scene. The acting is good and I think it was well cast. It does have horror film elements and could be scary for even young adults. I will say that they are few and far between and just as frightening as the real world dangers they have to face, but they were awesome. I will definitely be watching this again despite the fact that I wasn’t thrilled with the ending because it was very entertaining. Expand

Yep, this is what it looked like in the trailers: Aliens underwater or a clone of Leviathan or similar movies about aquatic monsters. (There's also a good amount of disaster survival in the mixture.) A basic tale but a well directed one.

The whole thing looks really, really good. I think the futuristic underwater suits in these may be among some of my favorite sci-fi suit designs. It is clear that effort was made to plan out the future deep sea oil rig this movie takes place in and around. The huge scale to this whole thing is made clear. You get a great opening shot of how deep the operation is. For a movie shot with a lot of darkness scenes, it is well lit. Cinematography, creature design, and pacing are all tight.

The best parts are the beginning and the end. These are the moments that buck expectations. I don't want to spoil anything, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Only downside is that the music and sound effects are too loud at points and the dialogue is so quick that you can miss plot points if you're not paying attention.

This is fun. Definitely didn't deserve to be held back for almost three years and dumped in January. I recommend this specifically for the beginning and ending.

Surprisingly fresh and well done art direction and sets? It's a great feeling to expect the usual crap and be surprised, and that's what happened here for me. Right from the action filled opening scene, the movie ticks along at an engaging pace. Instead of groaning at cliched dialog and messy plot holes I found myself enjoying and savoring each scene. What makes it impressive is the very fact that it IS a cliche movie, yet the director Leigh Whannell treats it seriously, as do the actors and apparently everyone else who worked on it. It's like they challenged themselves to take an existing aesthetic and push it further. And to any lover of these genres and sci-fi in general, I feel it shines through. I lament that many viewers will lazily grasp at surface level conclusions and miss the solid filmmaking seen here. Halfway through it struck me that the story is a story that has been told since we took to the seas. Over and over. A fable. It's MEANT to be re-told, in a way. This is just the latest iteration. A tale of caution to beware the gods of the deep. So sure, expect a cliche. Also expect a fun and thrilling popcorn flick. But try to leave your judgements behind and just enjoy it for what it is. I bet you'll have fun. I fully expect this film to be a sleeper hit! Expand

Underwater is a fast paced survival action thrill ride that draws inspiration from the famous Alien Films, Deadspace Videogames, and The Abyss. It's a well shot entertaining underwater popcorn flick that focuses too much on The twilight princess protaganist and not enough on plot development. See it on the cheap day. Expand

I enjoyed director William Eubank's ambitious eye for futuristic sci/fi in his other films; LOVE and The Signal, but he upped the ante to gargantuan heights in this film. Eubanks should be a director to watch for the Sci/fi thriller genre as he is absolutely brilliant with his keen eye for detail and intense visuals. Apparently this film was shot in 2017 but Fox studios waited on it. There is definitely influence throughout from films such as Alien, Leviathan, The Abyss, Sphere, and even Cloverfield, but it utilizes those inherent aspects perfectly to still have its own incredibly vicious identity. The film starts with insane intensity and never lets up with action and thrills in its massively detailed set pieces and terrific deigned brutal creatures. The cast is uncanny but surprisingly charming, intriguing, and funny at times. I think part of this film's unfortunate partial sabotage ratings/bad box office (15Mworld on 80M budget) comes from people misjudging Kristen Stewart for this particular role. She doesn't deserve the hate she gets and is actually phenomenal in this story with a great deal of emotion and perseverance. TJ Miller is the comedy relief and hilarious as always. Vincent Cassel is his solid standard self, and the others are solid as well. As things progress in depths things get viscerally chaotic with some of the coolest creatures I've seen and I've seen them all as a big sci/fi guy. The creature designs are impeccable, and i give the visual effects team great respect for conjuring up such ballistically sinister deep sea monsters. After so many films it has to be difficult to keep coming up with unique concepts for these creatures but they had huge imagination with these. Trust me when I say the final act is GARGANTUAN in itself. Overall this film is a visual feast for the eyes and ears (soundtrack/sound fx amazing as well) of most Sci/fi/thriller/action/horror fans especially creature/monster fans. I think this will go down as one of the better deep sea horror's when people finally see it. Don't let the misleading low ratings fool you, as this is a fantastic film. Expand

With stunning effects, immaculate cast performances, and true suspense, I found myself sweating while grasping my movie seat, waiting for the next jumpscare and plot twist. Horror movies are easily blundered, and Underwater is precariously curated enough to bring a fresh take to cinemas. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Powerful moments, high tensione and clautrophobia all the time. Kristen Stewart is the best actress of her generation. Great!

This movie is surprisingly good. Maybe not very original but it’s really well made and entertain. If you’re someone that wants to go to movies to have a good time, it’s the perfect movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Really fun film to watch! Well-made setting, decent script and acting. Love the twist halfway through as well as a few enjoyable unpredictable plot lines.
