Really? Have you guys watched many movies? There are so many cringeworthy, terribly made movies in the action/horror genre. This one was actually pretty good compared to the majority of others like it. I enjoyed it. I was entertained. I was not expecting, nor needing, it to be some deep masterpiece, and thought it was a decent entry into the action/horror mix. So, why so much hate for this movie? Because you hate Twilight and anybody who got their start from it? Because you hate Kristen Stewart? Because you don't like when action movies have a female lead? For real, there are many terribly made movies out there that deserve this level of vitriol for how painfully bad they are, but this movie isn't one of them. It was just an okay, entertaining, quick action/horror flick, not "an atrocity". Expand

Honestly nothing really new about this film other than the location it was set. But I felt is was reasonably well done. If you are in the mood for a movie it was not GREAT! but not bad either. Just okay.

The proposal isn't really new but lent itself to something more stimulating and not so conventional, therefore the story cannot exploit its cast properly and fails to be more enveloping.

I liked the tone and the atmosphere it's okay but the film replaces a suspense that could continue to be thunderous but subtle with an accelerated pace of action that avoids all kinds of dramatic depth.

It offers entertainment and that after all is its offer but how entertaining it is will really end up depending on each viewer.
For my part it was just a pretty regular movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A decent January movie with fairly good (and at least two very good) actors, and with a better director, film editor, and set design, this movie could have been more entertaining. The sea “monsters” were perhaps the most disappointing of all – looking more like large slugs than anything else. Because the pacing was fairly good, the movie held my attention, and I cared about some of the characters. Sadly, what the movie lacked was a feeling of real claustrophobia, tension, and menace. The acting too was good and the underwater darkness made for a great atmosphere. That said, I had several grievances (in no particular order):
1. It was hard to follow the dialogue on account of them speaking while in diving gear and the constant noises presumably coming from the collapsing surroundings.
2. The darkness in combination with the choppy editing of some of the action sequences made it hard to follow what the hell was going on at times.
3. The monsters behaved very irrationally, sometimes super aggressive, sometimes very skittish. Pick one and stay consistent.

All in all there's worse ways to spend a couple of hours, especially if you have a weakness for monster movies, like I do.

The underwater commotion was extremely difficult to keep up with sometimes due to how much the camera moved and the darkness/murky nature of the location. I had some serious problems with the editing in the first & third acts, which felt rushed and very 'early 2000s'. A similar issue I had with the sound mixing, which was noticeably clunky and didn't help that headache. Overall, it was fun and silly enough to keep me entertained. Just please stop the unnecessary narration trend - it's tiresome. 5.5/10 Expand

It throws your right into the disaster with little background. I may have wanted to see a little more of what life was like on the underwater drilling platform before everything went haywire but still an amusing movie, even with Kristen Stewart. Stewart is okay but it feels like the director and Stewart could never determine what type of character she is. There is something off about her performance. Other than that, pretty fun movie if you are willing to suspend your disbelief quite a bit. Expand

It'sThe term "Aliens clone" or "rip-off" gets thrown around so much it's kind of lost all meaning. Yet, I don't think it would be a hyperbole to say that Underwater bears more than a passing resemblance to the legendary sci-fi franchise. It's more Ridley Scott than James Cameron though, with the deep sea drill the characters inhabit calling to mind the Nostromo over Hadley's Hope.

The set design is actually the movie's greatest strength. You can tell a lot of work and care went into the little details, be they scattered mementos or a personal touch that a diver added to their scuba gear, to make the environments feel lived-in and therefore believable. You can see the evidence of the life that once filled the facility before things went wrong which leads to a very haunting, solemn atmosphere and an ever-present feeling of loss that weighs on the survivors.

It all ends up being somewhat squandered though as the film falls prey to the modern day cinema trapping of trying to make everything funny. I realize a little bit of humor can go a long way in a serious tale, but here we have a full-fledged comedian in T.J. Miller who is always ready with a sarcastic remark or amusing comment no matter what's going on, which constantly takes away from the gravity of the situation and severely limits the fear factor. Even as someone with thalassophobia, megalohydrothalassophobia, ichthyophobia, and countless other oceanic phobias there was never a moment that sent so much as a shiver up my spine, which is a letdown because on paper this should have been a pure nightmare for me.

The biggest disappointment however is the handling, or mishandling rather, of the Lovecraftian elements. Stripped of any traces of cosmic horror, Cthulhu and The Deep Ones have been turned into generic feeling, albeit cool looking movie monsters, which has to be some kind of sin. I searched for any sign that something deeper was going on with these creatures to no avail. A shame because that really could have added something special to the story.

All that aside, you can tell everyone involved really poured their hearts and souls into making this because they truly believed in the vision for the film, flawed though it may be. So while it's never as satisfying as it could have been, it is still a solid, charming creature feature with incredible visuals (the diving suits are dope) that I wouldn't mind watching again if someone were to put it on or I needed some background noise.

Not a bad cast, but the main character in Kristen Stewart is a modern agenda no more. The very structure of the plot is as primitive as possible, there is absolutely no suspense. After all, you know that the main character is strong and independent and nothing can happen to her, which cannot be said about weak and weak men who die one after another. And you also need to make an ending with self-sacrifice. Underwater passing film, on which you should not waste your free time. Want a good movie in a similar entourage? Watch The Abyss from Cameron. If one stays on the surface, it's a such superficial film that it would deserve a specific Oscar for the most extreme derivativity, but if one also analyzes its deeper aspect regardless of the intentions of director Eubank, then the historically unprecedented pressure, the monstrous problems encountered at an abysmal level, the implosive events ("horror pleni") are remarkable resonances of what today's art, culture and civilization are forced to face.
