This really is the best video game adaptation by far. While the plot isn’t generic and predictable at times, there was enough solid action, unexpected twists, superb performances especially but alicia Vikander who really brought Lara to life. A far more realistic and grounded interpretation than what Jolie played years ago. This is a must see!! There isn’t enough action/adventure films in the sea of superhero films. This was a welcome change. Especially great seeing female action heros which is rare in this industry. My advice to naysayers, keep your expectations low which if they are high, you’re the problem with my video game films will never succeed. The elitist attitudes is the culprit. Just go in and expect a fun action film, nothing more/nothing less Expand

This iteration is a disaster everywhere. I recommend to watch only if they pay you 20 bucks to do so. Any of the Resident evil movies is far better.

Tomb Raider is a good attempt to adapt the videogame, but in the end it's just a movie that Alicia Vikander takes behind her back to save her.

The original source in quality was below average. Except in the film there is no third of what was in the game. Ultimately, the film slips into a parody altogether, in which it is unclear whether the film originally wanted to be shot as cheaper and easier as possible or whether the film is counted strictly on fans of the series. The main antagonist is devoted to less than 5 minutes of timing, the conflict is not revealed. Judging by the installation, the action of the film unfolds on a small island, where there is nothing except the tomb. And the end of the film, in which the hint of a sequel causes longing. Please, it is not necessary. Expand

The film is OK for the first hour and slowly loses the plot in the second hour, but even in that first hour it wastes a lot of time on pointless diversions and elements that have nothing to do with the story as a whole, with a better director and more focused script this could have been genuinely good, but as it is it's vaguely watchable at best. Yes,Tomb Raider is one of those...
Let's get the positives out of the way so I'll make room for the cons.
Alicia Vikander steals this movie big time, she tries to be a good lead character, and I admire that. The action (just like Justice League) is probably the only thing you'll remember with its excellent set pieces.
As for the cons....Yeah,there are a ton of those...
You know that I love movie soundtracks, but Junkie XL's score felt like a way to annoy people during the action and the calm moments. (maybe he wanted to finish Justice League,RIGHT WARNER?).
Sometimes, the story can feel a little Indiana Jones-y,aand I admire directors (Independent or not) that love stuff like this, but when you love that stuff, you don't need to make a 1000 references during the scenes. And yes,i'm one of those guys that thinks the first 20 Mins could've easily been cut from this movie. To be honest,I had little expectations for this movie, but overall,it was what I expected, and suprisingly,as a 2 Hour movie,it feels like a quick seat with its execution, but in the end,Tomb Raider is another one of those Videogame Movies, and again, that doesn't mean it's completely bad. It's the right kind of Videogame Movie where you can have a Friday Night with your friends, but not in a theater. Still,i'm not stopping you on paying those 10 Dollars for curiosity.
In two words: Strongly mediocre.

He has been gone, and presumed dead, for seven years after going to try to find the hidden tomb of an evil queen. Lots of action and adventure follows as Lara follows the clues and finds herself in peril time and again. The movie is not bad. My main complaint is that Lara seems more like a super hero, constantly using physical strength, luck her intelligence to get out of life threatening situations. It doesn’t matter if she is falling off a cliff, falling into a raging river, pulling herself up with one arm. She never gets more than a scratch. It was a little much, in my opinion. However, I did enjoy the movie and the adventure. Expand

(wellBack in the 2000s, I used to remember how hilariously awful that the original Tomb Raider was when it had its insanely flawed comedic material being implemented into it, but don’t be afraid though, because the reboot actually clicks! (well sort of…) What made this reboot good for this video game adaptation is that our leading lady Alicia Vikander actually makes things pretty darn entertaining to watch when you see her giving one hell of a kickass performance as Lara Croft. Don’t expect any sexual innuendo in this film because Vikander’s Lara Croft is not like Angelina Jolie’s Croft at all, she literally kicks ass all over in this reboot. To be honest, this film did a good job on maintaining its R-rated-like feeling to this adaptation since the latest Tomb Raider video games are mature as a PG-13 rated movie. It would have been better if Tomb Raider was R-rated so the direction and script would be even better in this movie. The stunts and the camera work are very well timed like any action/adventure film you see, but not everything clicks when this film is having trouble trying to develop its characters and story and the direction is extremely cliché. To be honest, this Tomb Raider reboot is actually pretty decent to watch and way better than most video game adaptation movies that you will ever see in theaters. Sadly, this film does not break that video game adaptation movie curse. [I'm still waiting for Shawn Levy’s so-called Uncharted movie to drop though….] Expand

The characters are generally uninteresting and forgettable. This is most notably attributable to main protagonist, Lara, which acts as the typical generic, and bratty kid you can expect to find in most action films. Plot points are not emphasized nearly enough for the typical viewer to bat even a single eye. Though its concept did seem promising throughout the movie's first couple of minutes, the execution of the story was unfortunately very poor. Additionally, due to the overbearing amount of vices presented as opposed to virtues, the concluding resolution felt very fabricated when reached.

All in all, Tomb Raider has showcased an impressive blueprint and conceptualization for its plot, though the way said blue print was utilized came out as more or less underwhelming. This film is tough to enjoy, casually or through a critical eye. For a better experience, its best to simply play the video games it is based off of.

I have watched my husband play the game and some of the scenes from the movie are similar to scenes from the game. Much of the movie is very badly acted, especially by Vikander and there is no real father daughter chemistry between her and her father, played by Dominic West. I have to say that I was sorely disappointed by the film. The only real bright spot were some of the scenes that involved some kind of action. The music was heavily implemented to carry some of the scenes or at least to give them more of a punch. I can and have been able to suspend any attachment to reality but for this film it was rather difficult as my mind would wander back to certain holes in the story-line. Over all I'd say it gets a 3 for atmosphere and somewhat decent production values because the story and the acting were terrible. Expand

But as soon as they get to the island, it flips on you and turns in to "generic bad action movie". The pacing gets all wonky, the plot turns to mush, character's motivations are uncertain and action sequences become ridiculous. It's too bad, I wanted to like it, as I like Tomb Raider in general. In the end to me it just felt like a rushed out origin story so they can reboot the franchise... again. Oh, and there's scenes where they clearly are making callbacks to moments in the games. Which felt odd. I like the games, but I expect more from the movies, not a re-enacted game. Member that one time in that one game?? Yeah, I member! Alicia Vikander is Lara Croft and she spends every second on screen kicking ass and jumping and jumping in slow motion, falling with style and jumping some more. Much better than I was expecting, it’s entertaining and enjoyable in the moment so if you’re looking for this weeks popcorn movie then Tomb Raider should be your choice.

Lara Croft goes searching for her father who has been missing since she was a teenager. Unable to accept that after seven years his death is a real possibility and it’s time to move on she decides to search for him in his last known destination. A scary island off the coast of Japan. Also featuring a scary mythical tomb and Walton Goggins playing your stereotypical bad guy. A decent and simple story packed full of action. It’s a stream of clichés and ideas you’ve seen before only in better films. By the way Imax 3D and a shaky cam boxing match is perhaps the worst use of 3D I’ve seen in a while. That opening scene was enough to make me sick, there is no reason for this to be in 3D. If you’re one of those people who love seeing 3D movies to have random objects fly out of the screen and into your face well you won’t even get that. It’s a waste of time and money so make sure to see it in 2D. A definite improvement from the older Tomb Raider movies. Vikander has clearly put the effort in to become Lara Croft, dedicated to the role and she looks the part. A strong female lead who has no problem carrying the weight of this film on her shoulders. Recommended.

I suppose that if there are so many so called "action heroes" in which the story is the least important thing, then action heroines should also deserve their place under the spotlight.

Tomb Raider was never a videogame that caught my attention and the movies starring Angelina Jolie never interested me, I'm 100% sure that I never saw them again after the first time.

Now with this reboot starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander, the studio comes to offer another generic, simplistic and barely entertaining enough story

We have to say things as they are, the film offers a ridiculous story that is only meant for visual entertainment. There's nothing wrong with that, obviously the movie put its bet on that and it offers just that. It doesn't deceive you, if you expected some kind of narrative depth, you deceived yourself.

Vikander certainly committed to the role, if the hope of the studio is to get a new franchise at least it's clear they have a willing protagonist.
From the rest of the cast there's nothing to say, no one stands out, they're just there to support her.

Good visual effects, well done but brutally implausible sequences accompanied by a completely forgettable score by Junkie XL.
This is a movie that any action actor would have signed at any time, there is no more, it's just entertainment under the most basic class.

It'sTomb Raider is a reboot of a franchise from the early 2000s that was based on a series of video games. This reboot also comes out not long after the video game series was rebooted, and it clearly is meant to emulate the newer games. It's directed by Roar Uthaug and stars Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, and Walton Goggins. Story: The story is loosely based on the story of the newer video games, but it's a lot less interesting as they had to water it down quite a bit to fit it into a two-hour movie. The gist of it is that Lara has not been able to accept that her father is dead, and therefore refuses to sign the papers certifying that he's dead. Eventually, though, she is convinced to sign them by her dad's friend and the lawyer who is walking her through the process gives her a puzzle, that she then solves and finds her dad's secret lair. Based on what she finds in his lair, a bunch of research about an island that was supposedly cursed, she decides to set out to the island and find out what happened to her father. Lots of action and craziness ensues. I don't think it'll surprise any of you when I say that the story of this movie is nothing spectacular. They definitely could have cut down on the early movie set up (there's a bike sequence that goes on entirely too long) and given us more of what we actually want: watching her have an adventure on the island. Also, beckoning back to my earlier statement that it was watered down, I'm serious when I said that. The story of this movie is similar to that of the newer video games, but it is very, very loosely connected. Even the way that it ends isn't the same as the video games. In the end, it felt like that I watched a summarized version of the story I wanted to see. I still enjoyed myself for most of the movie, but it definitely had a lot more potential.

Script: Yeah, this is by far the weakest part of the movie. The dialogue is extremely weak, and because of that there are some cringe-worthy moments. Luckily, this movie doesn't rely on dialogue too much. Acting: All of the actors involved with this movie give solid performances, but when the script they have to work with isn't super awesome, they don't shine as bright as they could. Cinematography: For the most part, the cinematography was pretty unmemorable. There are no shots that are particularly impressive or outside of the norm for this kind of movie. I will say that there are a couple of action sequences where there is entirely too much cutting, though. Overall: Tomb Raider is an alright popcorn flick to watch and enjoy yourself. Just don't expect strong dialogue and don't expect too much out of the story.

With mostly any movie of this type I always so appreciate the work of it and can't deny the seriousness and convincing effort of vikander and the the rest of the crew. It's my fault I could't really like it. When you've seen and played so much, stories and experiences have to really stand out. Don't think there was nothing I liked about the post London scenes it just didn't have the full effect. I was thinking it was gonna be more like the un-apologetically surreal rated R violence I imagined(I've written my own stories:)Flat violence doesn't seem real and leaves a mindset of war being acceptable and maybe even one-sided fun(Note I know how enjoyable experiencing fake violence can be, not mentioning the cocaine like rush that veterans report of combat) The perpetrator character has to have a definite reaction to it, could be nearly crying, extreme anger or detached joke making. Thankfully seeing the shots of action and artistic craft the first time in the trailer was great. I really liked the lighting and pacing of the first water scene. The dark light and the waves, the breakage of bark from gunfire and most of the visuals go way beyond the in comparison static parts of the games. Vikander is a great substitute and her version could definitely replace the voice of Camilla, sorry:( Although i think I still prefer the white face and certain hair style of Dynamics Lara compared to her second act sorta pigtail look. With her full hair in the opening and the sleeked back look after getting wet, she looks amazing. The opening London Scenes were so cute and affecting. I would have loved way more of that. She's so great that now I definitely wanna start riding bikes pell mell around town and engage in the explosive and emotional fights within a padded gym. Not bad. Because of that, I can definitely say that it is a great thing that this all turned out and happened. So if they're open for change for the next snow one, here you are. And another thing I left out in this particular take is to make sure the dialogue is not imitative of so may others and go for unique introspective moments. Her state of suffering and life is something that needs to be shown in a new light. Theirs nothing like this in real life, making it more important to have some spark and care is taken into this interpretation. You shouldn't rely upon other examples of whats acceptable to our minds(I'm aware of how this sounds:) and make sure Lara is able to be her own. Expand

But for those watching the stand-alone (without any knowledge or playtime with the games), the movie was only okay. If you really want to see it, try to get cheaper tickets. Expand

While it has some genuinely interesting moments and Vikander epitomizes the Lara Croft character supremely, its weighed down by poor cheesy cliches and honestly a very dull plot ultimately. As far as it adapting to the video game, there are several homages and spot on sequences that represent Tomb Raider quite well. The villain is one of the weakest I've ever seen and shows barely any significance and the cgi is pitiful usually which is flabbergasting for a near 100 mil budget. Some of the acting was just down right mediocre and unconvincing. The Himiko storyline could've been expanded upon and was a missed opportunity that had major potential. Overall enjoyable adaptation that sets up a new franchise rather decently, but will be in need of drastic improvements in some crucial areas. 6.6/10 Expand

Adapt a game in a movie isn't an easy job, we can tell this because all the attempts that were made, mostly of them are bad or didn't reach the expectations from the gamers or even the general public. Much of that, i believe, happens becauseAdapt a game in a movie isn't an easy job, we can tell this because all the attempts that were made, mostly of them are bad or didn't reach the expectations from the gamers or even the general public. Much of that, i believe, happens because the games normally have more than 10 hours, and when they try to put it in a 2 hours story movie it gets limited and with missing pieces, they always replace things to make the story flow a little faster and the movie suffers cause of it, another thing that really makes the diference is that when we play a game we ARE the character, feel them and suffer with them because we actually are they, we feel in us the problems of the protagonist.. When this is tranposrted to the cinema, it's different, we need to the script to bring that to us, cause when we don't control the character it kind goes away, is easier for us to care about someone when we are controlling the person. Does Tomb Raider have this well done ?
The plot is based on the reboot from the video games, made to tell the origin story of Lara Croft. The father of Lara is considered dead, but she don't accept, once that she find her father's researches that lead to and island, she decides to go there hoping to find him alive.
I like how the movie starts, showing us how she gain her fighting skills, the physicality is justified at the 1st act, wich is very good, how they don't just throw she being a badass from nowhere, but on the other hand, they did not showed us how she got so intelligent, during the movie she do stuff and solve things that was just out of nowhere, it have a moment that a character say to her that she is very intelligent, but i actually wanted they to show this, not just say. This could have been fixed with the use of the flashbacks, the movie uses it a bunch of times but it simply repeat and tell the same thing a bunch of times, they could have used to show how interested she was in archeology and stuff, learning with the father. The flashbacks initially works to sustain something, but it gets to repetitive and badly used. Or also use the flashbacks to tell another characters story, it would fill the movie more.
The things the movie did to make it close to the game worked partially, it does have moments that Lara is interacting with the ambience and it is done in a very good way, the hole plane sequence works tremendously well, it can give you a sense of dangerousness, the action during the hole scene worked a lot, she trying to survive and struggling for it, that worked because you knew how she get the physicality to do that so, the sequence is pretty took out of the video game and was very good. But, again, on the other hand, there is a scene that she got to solve a puzzle to open a door, that she is really just pushing things for some minutes, and you have no idea what she is doing, they throw at us a nonsense flashback that didn't explained a damn thing, you don't know what she is doing or how she learn how to do so, the sequence is just terrible. It would have been so much better if they actually explained how thoose things worked, and we would be learning with Lara and solving the puzzles together with her, not just the puzzle, that hole ambience, i believe that it would make the movie much better to follow.
The cinematoraphy is wasted here, they had a big island with much to explor and show to us, it just have nothing to say neither about the island outside or inside the tomb. One thing that they did here in one moment and i enjoyed a lot, was that they filmed Alicia from behind, giving the impression that you were in the game playing it, it happens for some second, but i found it pretty dope.
The best thing in the movie is surely Alicia Vikander, she did everything that she could for portraying Lara at the best possibly way, not just mentioning her body, how strong she got, but the acting in general, much of the stunts that she did you could believe in what you were seing because of her. She have charisma, can pass different expressions and really make us believe that she is an adventurous with skills.
The movie is an generic adaptation, doesn't show nothing new, doesn't evolve the genre. It is a fun movie, that unfortunately isn't much memorable, neither for the gamers or the general public. Without great pretensions, the movie worked in some points, it is cool, but could have been so much better, considering how embracing the theme is and how good the acting was, so with a better script and montage the movie could have been great.

Surprisingly decent, especially for a video game movie. Lara set out on her first expedition finding the lost kingdom of Yamatai.
The storyline based upon the 2013 reboot of LC, was lauded for revitalizing one of gaming's biggest names and most venerable franchises, and it did it in part by leaning into the narrative side of the medium, with greater depth and characterization for its lead and a clear and compelling story it wanted to tell with her. It surprisingly plays like a throwback to the classic late-'80s/early '90s era of action filmmaking, represented by the likes of "Cliffhanger," "The Last of the Mohicans. Alicia Vikander did a great job here. She's correctly cast as a woman who's literally to-the-manor-born. More importantly, though, she's an action hero par excellence. Carved like a wood sculpture, and seemingly bereft of body fat, Vikander hurls herself into the film's action sequences. She makes you feel the physicality of this intensely visceral performance, letting out a high-pitched grunt of rage or pain when Lara crashes into a wall or gets slammed on the ground by a brawny foe, and letting sparks of fury flash in her eyes as Lara delivers a coup-de-grace.

The movie itself is dry, when you make a reboot, there's a lot of risks of unoriginality, and wow, this movie has fun with it. Because it's very unoriginal, it's also very predictable, situations that normally would be a shocking reveal, suddenly turn into scenes you think you've seen before.

The characters are so uninteresting, Lara Croft is alright i guess, but the surrounding characters are so damn uninteresting that it's just harder to watch. Lara Croft is shown in the beginning of the movie as a very smart and athletic person, the athletic part it is very well exploited in the movie, but the smart part only comes out when it's convenient, with her making some small stupid decisions, that make you think;"a person that smart would not have done that".

The action is kind of generic, nothing special, nothing bad by any means, some parts are actually good, but most of it it's very generic. I liked the beginning though, it was very fun and interesting.

The ending scenes just made it feel like the movie was just a huge expensive set up for the sequel. Which is kind of a shame, because it could have really been a great movie

Most of the reviews I've seen just say stupid **** like "they didnt try hard enough" or "the video games were better" but no one actually went into detail. I'm not sure what made the reviews go from 10 to 0 to 10 to 0 it seems like to other people that you either hate it or love it. I am personally a fan of the video games and I think they did an excellent job in storyline, special effects and that kind of action that keeps your heart racing and your mind active. I would highly recommend watching it no matter what the critics say. (btw I personally thought Lara's dad should have amputated and burnt the artery closed with a flare or something.) Expand

all myths are foundations of reality..

Tomb Raider

Even though there are stunning graphic visuals (all the water based sequences are beautifully shot), goosefleshing sound effects, brutal action sequences and jaw dropping stunts (hats off to the stuntmen) ironically the choreography; in a feature like this that relies a lot upon such stuff, is petty and questionable which at a certain point turns depressing rather than frustrating. At this stage of cinema, one would assume that the remake or the updated version of any feature or tale would be created with an aim to surpass the predecessor and fulfill the limitations (one is wrong). The premise never had enough potential to bedazzle the audience in the first place but in here the director Roar Uthaug is not even convincing the audience for a second look. Alicia Vikander, at the heart of it is so good and genuine throughout the course of it that it aches you to watch a talent go waste by. Tomb Raider has a shallow script that lacks gripping screenplay, better execution and editing (it ticks for around 2 hours which is way too much considering the material offered to the audience) to hold the audience on any loose thread of it.

This should not have been a 2-hour film, It should have been an hour and 40 minutes at best. The introduction, which took about 40 minutes for her to get on the island and to really start the adventure, was just utter nonsense. There was no real story set up, Just a bunch of poorly written and acted scenes that did nothing to even get you remotely interested in the events to come. And it didn't help that the plot is so freaking generic, You can pretty much predict it from start to finish.

Another big issue for me would have to be the heavy reliance on CG. It's painfully obvious that pretty much every action scene is CG and that's such a huge disappointment to me. It doesn't just look painfully obvious but it looks fake and cheesy. I wish they had done a better job with it, Maybe make for a bit more realistic movie rather than a bunch of weak "action" scenes made from CG that stick out like sore thumbs.

Overall, This isn't even worthy of a rental because there isn't a single redeemable thing about this film. Sorry to put it so bluntly but they need to stop bringing back this franchise, It's never going to be good.

She barely can't lift her legs (or even her arms) in fight scenes. Lot's of cuts needed to make a fight coherent. And so on and so on.

Conclusion: if you're a seventeen year old boy then you could download this movie and get off on Vikander and b-movie action - don't pay for it - otherwise forget about it and move on.

This is all about Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) leaping, running and fighting her way thru face incredible obstacles. Thanks to Vikander's skills as an actor, she creates an character with depth, which comes in handy for the emotional encounters. She also effectively handles the action sequences, which are evenly sprinkled throughout the film. Even though many of the encounters are well staged, they still have that video game feel. Still, it's refreshing to see a hero who isn't "super." In this origin story, she's vulnerable, yet determined and gutsy. This adventure breaks no new ground, but is competently entertaining. Expand

It's not for everyone, but for fans of B movie matinees, it's enough to impress. It's by far the best videogame movie that I've seen, though that's not saying much. 'Tomb Raider' succeeds because it faithfully captures the spirit and the mechanics of the pixelated source material, while never forgetting that it's a live-action movie about flesh and blood characters. Most people probably won't want to spend the money to see this in the theater, but I suspect a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised when they finally watch it on an airplane or catch it on cable. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute worst piece of SJW garbage I have ever seen. This movie is NOT a Tomb Raider movie. The original with Angelina Jolie opens with Lara Croft battling a robot trying to kill her. This movie opens with dozens of teenage boys trying to catch a fox tail off the back of Lara's bike while she tries to outrun them in some stupid game. THIS Lara Croft acts like a spoiled little brat. No maturity at all. Women are supposed to want to BE Lara Croft, but what woman wants to actually be like this. Even towards the end, where Lara is supposed to be finding herself, she still acts like a little girl. Certainly no tomb raider that's for sure. Also, you can barely understand the dialogue due to the over emphasis on everyone's accent apparently to try to make the movie more authentic. Avoid at all cost. We need to stop supporting movies like this that force a political agenda on the audience. Enough is Enough. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie was an incredible disappointment if you come in expecting Tomb Raider related to the series of games (or even previous movies). It made a so-so action movie with a bland taste and unoriginal story.

The acting was fine, there wasn’t a lot to show off the acting chops of anyone, but it wasn’t so horrible you cringe like you would on a straight to DVD movie. The story was bland, no real surprises and sadly no supernatural.

The lack of supernatural aspect was the most surprising part. It is the one thing that makes Tomb Raider the Tomb Raider you grew up with. Boss monsters, a bit of supernatural end of the world, etc was completely removed from the world. This was a straight forward action movie with no actual magic, or person locked in a tomb.

I really was disappointed they didn’t really stay with the video game reboot story. They kept a lot of chunks but left out most of the NPCs and all the cool portions of the story. The end result was a dry movie that was so bland and “meh” that I even now don’t remember everything.

The good: The acting was ok, but thats it – just ok.

The bad: The story was butchered and details of Lara Croft’s world so cut down that you wouldn’t recognize it as that world, even if some of the scenes were straight out of the video game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played all the TR games, and for me the intro and the general story of the new reboot game was vastly superior to that movie. First I don't think Alicia was the right choice. She don't seems at ease in an action movie, yet she undeniably have talents for acting. The story was just ok, and I think the element of the Trinity founded by the Croft should have been included from the start. The story would have been so much more richer that way. The action is good but the camera angles are just horrible 50% of the time. So most of them just feels distant. There is no beautiful landscape settings, and archaeology findings are almost in the background, no sens of discovery. At her first kill, Lara forgets to pick up a gun...in a survival story, that's a bad start. I didn't find the role of the father convincing. Not because of the actor, but his act revolves around 2-3 lines of thinking. I found the villain to be credible for once. The music was good on certain key points, but very generic otherwise. Some CGI weren't very well mixed together. I give it a 60%. I think the credibility of the characters and the action just wasn't there. In my view, that particular Lara would fit so much better in a TV series because of the survival and exploring aspects, who takes time to show and develop. Expand

The directing style started off interesting and it managed to create interest in the first half on the movie with amazingly shot scenes and very good music, creative dialog choices and good script mixed with proper acting skills. In the second half of the movie everything changed. Like the whole crew and cast was fired and replaced. The movie's plot started to drag and had pacing issues. The acting was overdone due to Hollywood effect, and the script was totally and down right trash, with the cheesy and meaningless one liners and the non existent character dialog. God awful CGI at times and no music or high quality sound effects for a movie at this budget and magnitude. Terrible fake scenery which wasn't even exploited to the limit when it would have been acceptable. The plot was shallow, and cliche. Given the fact that they had so much potential with the Tomb Raider title, they went for the complete and utter lazy plot with the generic villain, easily predictable plot twists and superficial meaningless character motivation and emotions. Overall it felt like the biggest failure of video game adaptation (but we all know that is not true). It's a bad movie, which wasn't supposed to be made! Expand

Alicia Vikander is the most capable actress to play Lara Croft as of yet. She gives it her all, but her performance is the only one that is not cringe-inducing and it does not help to elevate the script that's unintentionally comedic at parts. The action is fun, as is to be expected from the genre, but the story just leaves too much room for blatantly idiotic decision-making that, if avoided, would have cleaned up inconsistency but also would have severely truncated the film's length. That being said, there is quite a plot twist that is sure to satidfy most viewers. This is a movie for fans of the franchise. Tomb raider fans will be well-served by the story, but newcomers will find little enjoyable in this reboot.

She seemed as she is just a well-trained girl who is fit and has some good fighting skills, but as the movie proceeds and Lara becomes at risk, we see that she is more like a superhero rather than a good fighter, and that didn't work for me at all. Also, she is implausibly smart and quick-witted, and that saves a lot of time that should have been spent on putting some puzzle pieces and discovering important things.

Surprisingly, Lara Croft wasn't likable at the beginning, but as the movie goes forward she became more and more interesting, and that, in large part, due to Alicia Vikander appealing performance, she really nailed it! Alicia Vikander proved that was the right cast choice for Lara Croft, whether from her appearance, or her acting abilities in the dramatic moments. Speaking of drama, I am so happy that this movie didn't try to be a tearjerker movie, specially at displaying Lara's past and her father. But, that doesn't mean that we got a good origin story of Lara, actually everything else about Lara's past and her story with her father was terrible! The origin story here is not just uninspired, but it's a total mess.

There are some plot holes in the movie. In addition, there are a lot of exposition, and a lot of explaining. And the dialogue in general isn't very good. The plot itself is somewhat muddled. Also, there is a stupid plot-twist. The action sequences are by no means special or inventive, but what makes up for it is the camera work in these action sequences that resembles the video games. All the camera movements and the camera angles are pretty much look like those of video games, and that was really cool! While I didn't the action isn't intense, I was very entertained by it. That being said, The movie still has a cinematic feel, and it looked very nice. Thankfully, this movie is not CGI-heavy, as I mentioned above that it didn't rely so much on fantasy, but when there are some scenes that require using special effects, the CGI looked a bit poor. The humor isn't so great, but Nick Frost has two cameos, and he was hilarious as usual.

The villain is clichéd and very weak. Of course, there is a sequel bait ending Despite all its major flaws, I enjoyed Tomb Raider!

Tomb Raider is the only movie that based on a video game that feels like a video game, for better or worse!

The writing is bare-bones and the shot selections get ugly at times but Tomb Raider counterbalances those missteps with moments of emotion and adventure. Driven by Alicia Vikander, who pulls off both swagger and vulnerability, this journey takes time to build its climax and earns its moments. Meanwhile, the variety of action sequences and character interactions throughout contribute to a steady flow of engagement.

While this film does fall victim to going overboard with special effects, the steady pace of the journey should warrant viewer investment. Like many broad action movies lately, Tomb Raider tries too hard at times but, it also accomplishes the smaller moments that many of those same action movies are missing. Tomb Raider may not strike many as a favorite but it should be mildly enjoyable for most.

The action was thrilling and tense, with Alicia Vikander really selling both the character of Lara Croft and the danger of the situations she finds herself in. Her performance is incredible in the movie's quieter, emotional moments as well.

There are a couple of scenes that play out a little awkwardly (notably the introduction of Walton Goggins's character), but they don't detract from the film overall.

Overall, I highly recommend this film. But just go and have fun with it. It's not a film for overthinking, for sure.

But does it do any justice to the 22-year-old title and its latest rebooted series? As a big fan of the game (having played the 2013 title 12 times in the past five years), I was surprisingly fascinated by how good the entire movie was. Yes, it does take Lara a long time until she reaches the lost island where her adventure actually begins, but getting to know this sweet, innocent and troubled Lara in the first part of the movie was both exciting and very relating, to anyone in audience. She is smart and intelligent, yet she hides it. She doesn't want to take her father's wealth or go to college, instead she's trying to find out who she really is. Many tributes to the 2013 game, from names to action sequences, and a big story plot (quite unexpected and maybe little disappointing to hardcore Lara fans) define this very thrilling and exciting game. Interesting thing is that it's not just Lara, but the enemy who's quite relocatable at moments and very multi-dimensional. Definitely a movie that every fan should see, as well as anyone who loves the action/adventure genre. It's been a long time since we've seen so many women taking the silver screen by storm and Alicia Vikander is one of the best at their job. Truly a movie for the ages! Expand

ThisI played the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and although I enjoyed parts of it, I realized it was too unrealistic that this girl going on an archaeological project with a crew can take on nature itself along with hundreds of men with guns. This movie takes the premise of the game, same villain, same goal, but it does everything else completely differently and presents a different kind of Lara Croft. The first time we see her she is sparring in an MMA match. This Lara is a badass. She can and wants to take care of herself, she's a lone wolf and she is nearly broke. She doesn't want daddy's inheritance for a reason I won't mention. She's strong but also tender in that she's somebody's daughter and Alicia Vikander plays that so well. It's like a serious Indiana Jones flick with good action scenes and there aren't a hundred men that she has to take on all by herself. The film's story is presented in a much more realistic direction than the game and I really enjoyed that. There was only one scene that took me out of the experience and that had to do with colors in a trap room. You'll know if you see it. Other than that, I'm hoping for a part two because I was impressed. This is the best movie that is based on a video game and is probably the turning point for video game movies. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of the critic reviews I've read so far seem to be based on the first Tomb Raider movies and video games. It seems as if they are TOTALLY oblivious to the fact that the game series recently went through a pretty intense reboot.

The Tomb Raider game reboot basically turned a famous mostly pixelated character of Lara Croft into a living, breathing and more realistic one that experiences more believable reality than the previous one.

And any TR gaming fan realizes this. To me, it does not take rocket science to put all this together.

This being said, there are still major differences between the reboot game and the movie upon which it is largely based. As an action movie lover, I personally love these changes, because it allows more suspense in not knowing what to expect from people who have played the game.

SPOILERS FOLLOW!

For example, there are characters in the movie that were NOT in the game reboot. Similarly, there are characters missing from the film who were in the game. However, there are also many similarities that were in faithful keeping with the reboot. For example, the island STILL manages to maroon and / or kill visitors to it's shores and mainland. And much of the same action from the game faithfully occurs within the film (e.g. using a pick axe tool for effective climbing, a wealth of agility stunts, similar scenes depicting her survival being on a crash-landed plane stuck atop a waterfall, etc.).

Most importantly, the writers of the new movie have added sheer realism into the story, helping average movie goers to FEEL as if they are literally walking in the shoes of Lara Croft, a potentially REAL individual. Equally as important, Alicia Vikander gives a just-as-riveting portrayal, one that is more believable than Angelina Jolie was ever able to achieve. But, not taking anything away from Jolie, the two characters are TOTALLY different. One is really busty and a lot more glamorous (Jolie); whereas, the other is more lean, rugged, and gritty (Vikander). They both did amazing jobs in their own right.

I've also heard rumors of people body-shaming Vikander as she exists in her latest role. To me, this is unforgivable. As I've said, this movie is based on the game reboot. And in the new game, Lara Croft is not nearly as buxom as the first depiction. Hell, realistically, Jolie's Croft would likely have given herself severe bruising after running not even twenty steps up a staircase. Most women with big busts find running very difficult and often experience severe upper back pain. This a bustier Lara Croft, though a lot funner to watch, is CLEARLY unbelievable, another chief reason for the game / movie reboots. All this considered, in my humble opinion, the reboot wins out in both cases, the game AND the movie. Since this is a movie review, suffice it to say that I give the new Tomb Raider movie a 10 on a 10-scale.

The third film in the “Tomb Raider” film series has arrived and much like
the recent entries in the video game series that inspire it; the film
serves as a reboot of the franchise.

This time out Alicia Vikander takes over the title role from Angelina
Jolie and brings us a younger and far less experienced Lara Croft who
toils as a bike messenger struggling to get by in London. She has a feisty
and competitive nature but is haunted by the absence of her father
(Dominic West), who has been missing for seven years and is presumed dead.
As such, Lara is his sole heir and is being pressured to sign documents
that will legally declare him dead and turn over a vast corporation and
fortune to Lara. True to her nature, Lara resists this as she is
unwilling to move on from her father and cannot bring herself to declare
him dead and take her inheritance.

In time Lara learns that her father was also a dabbler in the supernatural
and artifacts and may have vanished trying to find a secluded tomb on a
remote Japanese island.

Undaunted, Lara sets off to get answers and finds herself in the company
of a boat Captain named Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), who reluctantly takes her to
the dangerous island. Danger arrives first in a storm then in the form of
a Mercenary named Matthias Vogel (Walton Goggins), who wants to find the
mysterious tomb as well for nefarious reasons and will stop at nothing
including murder to get it.

Lara is soon faced with the fight of her life as she must battle Vogel and
his men as well as the island and other forces in order to survive and
protect the world.

The film moves at a pace slower than you might expect as the first half of
the film is mostly setup but there are a few moments of action included to
keep things interesting. While many of the action sequences may seem like
they are either restrained or influenced from other films, they do still
work and entertain. While some may call this a female “Indiana Jones”
film, Lara is very much her own character as she has a spunk and grit that
makes her equal adapt in a cultured setting as she is solving a dangerous
trap or mixing it up with deadly threats.

Vikander also portrays Lara with a sense of vulnerability as she does get
injured, bruised and tormented. This is not an unstoppable action machine,
but rather a real person who knows there is a time use your brain and then
a time to take action, but is also remorseful about the consequences of
her actions at times.

The film does move to a satisfying finale and sets up a further chapter
very well. There are some great nods to prior games in the film which was
refreshing as I joked to my wife during some of the more intense scenes
that I feel like I need to be pushing the X and O button on our Dualshock
4 controllers to help Lara run faster and jump higher.
In the end “Tomb Raider” is a satisfying if safe reboot for the franchise that I expect should keep fans of the series happy. I do think that audiences in North America may want a bit more action but the film should play well in the Asian and European markets. 3.5 stars out of 5.

If you have played the 2013 Tomb Raider game (that this movie is based on) then you will get a deeper joy because there are certain scenes and nuances that nod heavily to both it and previous games. However, it is great for the general public as well. It deviates from the curse of unimaginative and lazy writing that past video-game adaptations suffered from by throwing in clever plot points, riddles, and lines that give the movie another dimension story-wise. Yes, it nods (and borrows certain events and ideas from) to Indiana Jones, going as far as to borrow (steal) part of the plot from the Last Crusade especially-- but not in a necessarily malicious way. Tomb Raider knows its place, it is not Indiana Jones, it is inspired by it, and so these scenes feel more like a tribute to the inspiration behind the character than a plagiarism of it. Additionally, Alicia Vikander plays the most rational, realistic, and relatable Lara Croft to date. Her shining merits in acting come through in this role and she brings a new side to Lara. Yes this is an origin story, but no it does not feel like one. In fact, the movie doesn't feel as long as it is, and it is a long movie. That is all. Expand

I have to admit that I initially thought Alicia Vikander was a poor choice to portray Lara, as I remembered Lara's look differently from the games. In practice, she is playing an unusually believable Lara with substantially better acting than I've seen in major Hollywood productions recently. Key to the experience for me was that the audience can actually see Lara grow: she doesn't start out all powerful but instead she fails, tries again and perseveres. Major kudos for the decision to cast her, really impressive. Walton Goggins as the bad guy was also an inspired decision - he comes across with backstory and motivation, a feat few action films achieve.

Graphics and sound track were top notch, as expected, and the pacing of the plot that other reviewers complain about was something I thought was very well warranted - I enjoyed the first two thirds of the movie more than the hectic resolution in the last third.

Overall, this movie was great; my only misgiving is that they didn't stick even closer to the video games storyline and one deviation is a bit more cliché than others (won't spoil it, just thought it was unnecessary).

I am very much looking forward to sequels and am officially giving up on movie critics ;)

When it comes to a movie based on video games such as Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed and Street Fighter, they always tend to get very negative responses from both critics and audiences but in this case, I felt this movie did much better than any previous video game movies. Unlike the first two movies starring Angelina Jolie, this instalment is based on the 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot.

Lara Croft (Vikander) is introduced as a bike courier following the disappearance her father, Lord Richard Croft (West), seven years ago. After learning from her father’s business partner that she will inherit her family’s vast fortune, she discovers her father’s research about Himiko, the mythical Queen which said she could command the power of life and death. She decide to investigate her father’s disappearance despite being told (via pre-recorded message) to destroy all of his research.

After hiring Lu Ren (Wu) a ship captain in Hong Kong, they travel to Yamatai where her father’s last known location but they were separate from the sea storm. They were then capture by Mathias Vogel (Goggins), who led the expedition to search for Himiko’s tomb. Lara, along with Lu Ren and other prisoners are forced to help Vogel to search for the tomb while she has to stop Vogel and his mercenaries to find the tomb and investigate her father’s disappearance to save the world.

In comparison to Angelina Jolie’s take on Lara Croft, Alica Vikander definitely fits her role of the character and even bears a close resemblance to her video game counterpart and less fanservice of the character. All of her stunts are done by herself instead of relying on stunt double which I find it very impressive. Her acting is good as well.

In terms of the plot, I would say is just mediocre and could have been a little better but it still makes a good action-adventure film and I can see the efforts of trying to make this movie closer to the video game. Overall, I can say this is currently the best video game movie. If you are a fan of Tomb Raider video games, give this one a try.

Anyway, great acting (though shé too small a built for supposedly big & strong Lara) by Alicia Vikander. Epic action sequences! Hope to see a sequel in near future. :)

Although Alicia Vikander achieved a great interpretation, and the story achieved a great connection with the new version of the video game of the intrepid Lara Croft. The story had a lot of flaws in the plot structure, and it turned out to be more of the same. It was slightly disappointing. Will someone make the miracle in this world of adaptations of video games? Not in a long time, that is the harsh reality. Expand

Did you play Tomb Raider? So, this movie is a 10. Usually game adaptations are poor, but this movie isn't disappointing. Just what I was expecting

I was pleasantly surprised when I watched Tomb Raider. My only complain is that the story felt a little cramped, maybe should have been a longer show to make good use of the unique environments that it takes place in, but, that was easy to do with a video game and I can see how it's difficult to translate that amount of time into a movie. It's for sure waaaaaaaaaay better than that crap with Angelina Jolie. Go and see it, it's a good show in the action/adventure genre. Expand

I really enjoyed the film; The actress who played Lara was fantastic. It was very true to the games.

But Tomb Raider exceeded my expectations! It was REALLY good! This is a solid action adventure film in the vein of Indiana Jones meets National Treasure meets the Hunger Games. It’s a fun time. You don’t have to know anything about the character in order to enjoy it... but if you DO love the game series, you are in for a real treat. THIS is how you do VG adaptations.

The acting is top notch and a big reason this film succeeds. Combine that with a fast pace, good world building, solid supporting characters, and the bravery to NOT jump the shark with the story... and you have a winning combo on your hands. Go see it! You will not be disappointed!
