This really is the best video game adaptation by far. While the plot isn’t generic and predictable at times, there was enough solid action, unexpected twists, superb performances especially but alicia Vikander who really brought Lara to life. A far more realistic and grounded interpretation than what Jolie played years ago. This is a must see!! There isn’t enough action/adventure films in the sea of superhero films. This was a welcome change. Especially great seeing female action heros which is rare in this industry. My advice to naysayers, keep your expectations low which if they are high, you’re the problem with my video game films will never succeed. The elitist attitudes is the culprit. Just go in and expect a fun action film, nothing more/nothing less Expand

As far as itEssentially a female Indiana Jones. While it has some genuinely interesting moments and Vikander epitomizes the Lara Croft character supremely, its weighed down by poor cheesy cliches and honestly a very dull plot ultimately. As far as it adapting to the video game, there are several homages and spot on sequences that represent Tomb Raider quite well. The villain is one of the weakest I've ever seen and shows barely any significance and the cgi is pitiful usually which is flabbergasting for a near 100 mil budget. Some of the acting was just down right mediocre and unconvincing. The Himiko storyline could've been expanded upon and was a missed opportunity that had major potential. Overall enjoyable adaptation that sets up a new franchise rather decently, but will be in need of drastic improvements in some crucial areas. 6.6/10 Expand

Surprisingly decent, especially for a video game movie. Lara set out on her first expedition finding the lost kingdom of Yamatai.
The storyline based upon the 2013 reboot of LC, was lauded for revitalizing one of gaming's biggest names and most venerable franchises, and it did it in part by leaning into the narrative side of the medium, with greater depth and characterization for its lead and a clear and compelling story it wanted to tell with her. It surprisingly plays like a throwback to the classic late-'80s/early '90s era of action filmmaking, represented by the likes of "Cliffhanger," "The Last of the Mohicans. Alicia Vikander did a great job here. She's correctly cast as a woman who's literally to-the-manor-born. More importantly, though, she's an action hero par excellence. Carved like a wood sculpture, and seemingly bereft of body fat, Vikander hurls herself into the film's action sequences. She makes you feel the physicality of this intensely visceral performance, letting out a high-pitched grunt of rage or pain when Lara crashes into a wall or gets slammed on the ground by a brawny foe, and letting sparks of fury flash in her eyes as Lara delivers a coup-de-grace.

Alicia Vikander seemed to fit the title role quite well and her and the action sequences were all fun to watch. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just got back from the theatre. Most of the reviews I've seen just say stupid **** like "they didnt try hard enough" or "the video games were better" but no one actually went into detail. I'm not sure what made the reviews go from 10 to 0 to 10 to 0 it seems like to other people that you either hate it or love it. I am personally a fan of the video games and I think they did an excellent job in storyline, special effects and that kind of action that keeps your heart racing and your mind active. I would highly recommend watching it no matter what the critics say. (btw I personally thought Lara's dad should have amputated and burnt the artery closed with a flare or something.) Expand

Thanks to Vikander's skills as an actor, she creates an character with depth, which comes in handy for the emotional encounters. She also effectively handles the action sequences, which are evenly sprinkled throughout the film. Even though many of the encounters are well staged, they still have that video game feel. Still, it's refreshing to see a hero who isn't "super." In this origin story, she's vulnerable, yet determined and gutsy. This adventure breaks no new ground, but is competently entertaining. Expand

It's not for everyone, but for fans of B movie matinees, it's enough to impress. It's by far the best videogame movie that I've seen, though that's not saying much. 'Tomb Raider' succeeds because it faithfully captures the spirit and the mechanics of the pixelated source material, while never forgetting that it's a live-action movie about flesh and blood characters. Most people probably won't want to spend the money to see this in the theater, but I suspect a lot of people will be pleasantly surprised when they finally watch it on an airplane or catch it on cable. The action was thrilling and tense, with Alicia Vikander really selling both the character of Lara Croft and the danger of the situations she finds herself in. Her performance is incredible in the movie's quieter, emotional moments as well.

There are a couple of scenes that play out a little awkwardly (notably the introduction of Walton Goggins's character), but they don't detract from the film overall.

Overall, I highly recommend this film. But just go and have fun with it. It's not a film for overthinking, for sure.

But does it do any justice to the 22-year-old title and its latest rebooted series? As a big fan of the game (having played the 2013 title 12 times in the past five years), I was surprisingly fascinated by how good the entire movie was. Yes, it does take Lara a long time until she reaches the lost island where her adventure actually begins, but getting to know this sweet, innocent and troubled Lara in the first part of the movie was both exciting and very relating, to anyone in audience. She is smart and intelligent, yet she hides it. She doesn't want to take her father's wealth or go to college, instead she's trying to find out who she really is. Many tributes to the 2013 game, from names to action sequences, and a big story plot (quite unexpected and maybe little disappointing to hardcore Lara fans) define this very thrilling and exciting game. Interesting thing is that it's not just Lara, but the enemy who's quite relocatable at moments and very multi-dimensional. Definitely a movie that every fan should see, as well as anyone who loves the action/adventure genre. It's been a long time since we've seen so many women taking the silver screen by storm and Alicia Vikander is one of the best at their job. Truly a movie for the ages! Expand

ThisI played the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and although I enjoyed parts of it, I realized it was too unrealistic that this girl going on an archaeological project with a crew can take on nature itself along with hundreds of men with guns. This movie takes the premise of the game, same villain, same goal, but it does everything else completely differently and presents a different kind of Lara Croft. The first time we see her she is sparring in an MMA match. This Lara is a badass. She can and wants to take care of herself, she's a lone wolf and she is nearly broke. She doesn't want daddy's inheritance for a reason I won't mention. She's strong but also tender in that she's somebody's daughter and Alicia Vikander plays that so well. It's like a serious Indiana Jones flick with good action scenes and there aren't a hundred men that she has to take on all by herself. The film's story is presented in a much more realistic direction than the game and I really enjoyed that. There was only one scene that took me out of the experience and that had to do with colors in a trap room. You'll know if you see it. Other than that, I'm hoping for a part two because I was impressed. This is the best movie that is based on a video game and is probably the turning point for video game movies. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of the critic reviews I've read so far seem to be based on the first Tomb Raider movies and video games. It seems as if they are TOTALLY oblivious to the fact that the game series recently went through a pretty intense reboot.

The Tomb Raider game reboot basically turned a famous mostly pixelated character of Lara Croft into a living, breathing and more realistic one that experiences more believable reality than the previous one.

And any TR gaming fan realizes this. To me, it does not take rocket science to put all this together.

This being said, there are still major differences between the reboot game and the movie upon which it is largely based. As an action movie lover, I personally love these changes, because it allows more suspense in not knowing what to expect from people who have played the game.

SPOILERS FOLLOW!

For example, there are characters in the movie that were NOT in the game reboot. Similarly, there are characters missing from the film who were in the game. However, there are also many similarities that were in faithful keeping with the reboot. For example, the island STILL manages to maroon and / or kill visitors to it's shores and mainland. And much of the same action from the game faithfully occurs within the film (e.g. using a pick axe tool for effective climbing, a wealth of agility stunts, similar scenes depicting her survival being on a crash-landed plane stuck atop a waterfall, etc.).

Most importantly, the writers of the new movie have added sheer realism into the story, helping average movie goers to FEEL as if they are literally walking in the shoes of Lara Croft, a potentially REAL individual. Equally as important, Alicia Vikander gives a just-as-riveting portrayal, one that is more believable than Angelina Jolie was ever able to achieve. But, not taking anything away from Jolie, the two characters are TOTALLY different. One is really busty and a lot more glamorous (Jolie); whereas, the other is more lean, rugged, and gritty (Vikander). They both did amazing jobs in their own right.

I've also heard rumors of people body-shaming Vikander as she exists in her latest role. To me, this is unforgivable. As I've said, this movie is based on the game reboot. And in the new game, Lara Croft is not nearly as buxom as the first depiction. Hell, realistically, Jolie's Croft would likely have given herself severe bruising after running not even twenty steps up a staircase. Most women with big busts find running very difficult and often experience severe upper back pain. This a bustier Lara Croft, though a lot funner to watch, is CLEARLY unbelievable, another chief reason for the game / movie reboots. All this considered, in my humble opinion, the reboot wins out in both cases, the game AND the movie. Since this is a movie review, suffice it to say that I give the new Tomb Raider movie a 10 on a 10-scale.

The third film in the “Tomb Raider” film series has arrived and much like
the recent entries in the video game series that inspire it; the film
serves as a reboot of the franchise.

This time out Alicia Vikander takes over the title role from Angelina
Jolie and brings us a younger and far less experienced Lara Croft who
toils as a bike messenger struggling to get by in London. She has a feisty
and competitive nature but is haunted by the absence of her father
(Dominic West), who has been missing for seven years and is presumed dead.
As such, Lara is his sole heir and is being pressured to sign documents
that will legally declare him dead and turn over a vast corporation and
fortune to Lara. True to her nature, Lara resists this as she is
unwilling to move on from her father and cannot bring herself to declare
him dead and take her inheritance.

In time Lara learns that her father was also a dabbler in the supernatural
and artifacts and may have vanished trying to find a secluded tomb on a
remote Japanese island.

Undaunted, Lara sets off to get answers and finds herself in the company
of a boat Captain named Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), who reluctantly takes her to
the dangerous island. Danger arrives first in a storm then in the form of
a Mercenary named Matthias Vogel (Walton Goggins), who wants to find the
mysterious tomb as well for nefarious reasons and will stop at nothing
including murder to get it.

Lara is soon faced with the fight of her life as she must battle Vogel and
his men as well as the island and other forces in order to survive and
protect the world.

The film moves at a pace slower than you might expect as the first half of
the film is mostly setup but there are a few moments of action included to
keep things interesting. While many of the action sequences may seem like
they are either restrained or influenced from other films, they do still
work and entertain. While some may call this a female “Indiana Jones”
film, Lara is very much her own character as she has a spunk and grit that
makes her equal adapt in a cultured setting as she is solving a dangerous
trap or mixing it up with deadly threats.

Vikander also portrays Lara with a sense of vulnerability as she does get
injured, bruised and tormented. This is not an unstoppable action machine,
but rather a real person who knows there is a time use your brain and then
a time to take action, but is also remorseful about the consequences of
her actions at times.

The film does move to a satisfying finale and sets up a further chapter
very well. There are some great nods to prior games in the film which was
refreshing as I joked to my wife during some of the more intense scenes
that I feel like I need to be pushing the X and O button on our Dualshock
4 controllers to help Lara run faster and jump higher.
In the end “Tomb Raider” is a satisfying if safe reboot for the franchise that I expect should keep fans of the series happy. I do think that audiences in North America may want a bit more action but the film should play well in the Asian and European markets. 3.5 stars out of 5.

It is not revolutionary, it is not oscar-tier, but it is not bad. There is so much in this movie that is solidly good, that it is barely notched by the few superficial details that are bad. If you have played the 2013 Tomb Raider game (that this movie is based on) then you will get a deeper joy because there are certain scenes and nuances that nod heavily to both it and previous games. However, it is great for the general public as well. It deviates from the curse of unimaginative and lazy writing that past video-game adaptations suffered from by throwing in clever plot points, riddles, and lines that give the movie another dimension story-wise. Yes, it nods (and borrows certain events and ideas from) to Indiana Jones, going as far as to borrow (steal) part of the plot from the Last Crusade especially-- but not in a necessarily malicious way. Tomb Raider knows its place, it is not Indiana Jones, it is inspired by it, and so these scenes feel more like a tribute to the inspiration behind the character than a plagiarism of it. Additionally, Alicia Vikander plays the most rational, realistic, and relatable Lara Croft to date. Her shining merits in acting come through in this role and she brings a new side to Lara. Yes this is an origin story, but no it does not feel like one. In fact, the movie doesn't feel as long as it is, and it is a long movie. That is all. Expand

I have to admit that I initially thought Alicia Vikander was a poor choice to portray Lara, as I remembered Lara's look differently from the games. In practice, she is playing an unusually believable Lara with substantially better acting than I've seen in major Hollywood productions recently. Key to the experience for me was that the audience can actually see Lara grow: she doesn't start out all powerful but instead she fails, tries again and perseveres. Major kudos for the decision to cast her, really impressive. Walton Goggins as the bad guy was also an inspired decision - he comes across with backstory and motivation, a feat few action films achieve.

Graphics and sound track were top notch, as expected, and the pacing of the plot that other reviewers complain about was something I thought was very well warranted - I enjoyed the first two thirds of the movie more than the hectic resolution in the last third.

Overall, this movie was great; my only misgiving is that they didn't stick even closer to the video games storyline and one deviation is a bit more cliché than others (won't spoil it, just thought it was unnecessary).

I am very much looking forward to sequels and am officially giving up on movie critics ;)

When it comes to a movie based on video games such as Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed and Street Fighter, they always tend to get very negative responses from both critics and audiences but in this case, I felt this movie did much better than any previous video game movies. Unlike the first two movies starring Angelina Jolie, this instalment is based on the 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot.

Lara Croft (Vikander) is introduced as a bike courier following the disappearance her father, Lord Richard Croft (West), seven years ago. After learning from her father’s business partner that she will inherit her family’s vast fortune, she discovers her father’s research about Himiko, the mythical Queen which said she could command the power of life and death. She decide to investigate her father’s disappearance despite being told (via pre-recorded message) to destroy all of his research.

After hiring Lu Ren (Wu) a ship captain in Hong Kong, they travel to Yamatai where her father’s last known location but they were separate from the sea storm. They were then capture by Mathias Vogel (Goggins), who led the expedition to search for Himiko’s tomb. Lara, along with Lu Ren and other prisoners are forced to help Vogel to search for the tomb while she has to stop Vogel and his mercenaries to find the tomb and investigate her father’s disappearance to save the world.

In comparison to Angelina Jolie’s take on Lara Croft, Alica Vikander definitely fits her role of the character and even bears a close resemblance to her video game counterpart and less fanservice of the character. All of her stunts are done by herself instead of relying on stunt double which I find it very impressive. Her acting is good as well.

In terms of the plot, I would say is just mediocre and could have been a little better but it still makes a good action-adventure film and I can see the efforts of trying to make this movie closer to the video game. Overall, I can say this is currently the best video game movie. If you are a fan of Tomb Raider video games, give this one a try.

Remember folks, this is based on the tonally more serious Tomb Raider reboot than the original.
It is an enjoyable film that would have benefited from a little more thought being involved as everyone makes monumentally stupid decisions continuously. The camcorder of limitless battery and product placement is a low but the cast do well with what they have, the fights and action are good.
It is a decent enough film and easily one of the better game adaptations.

You don’t have to know anything about the character in order to enjoy it... but if you DO love the game series, you are in for a real treat. THIS is how you do VG adaptations.

The acting is top notch and a big reason this film succeeds. Combine that with a fast pace, good world building, solid supporting characters, and the bravery to NOT jump the shark with the story... and you have a winning combo on your hands. Go see it! You will not be disappointed!

Solid action flick.I'm surprised this film got a lot of weak reviews from professional reviewers.

Script made sense and kept me interested. Fun action sequences. They tried some neat new things here: an action sequence involving a ladder, a tomb trap, and the revelation of the what the prize they're searching.

Vikander and the rest of the cast all do a good job. (Surprised they got Derek Jacobi for a minor role that anyone could have played.) I heard complaints that Walton Goggins didn't play a more magnetic antagonist like he did in any films. However, I think this spoke to his ranger. I though it was a nice change of pace to play a nasty, desperate man who attempts to put on a thin veil of normalcy.

Camerawork was interesting. They went with a Daniel Craig-James Bond shaky-cam/psuedo documentary feel to it which I felt made the film feel more grounded than some action movies without making the film feel like it was trying too hard to be realistic. The nighttime and cave scenes were too dark, though.

I have not had this much fun in the theatre since I saw Deadpool. After seeing so many really bad movies in 2017, and not a single movie I liked so far in 2018, I finally found a movie worth the ticket price - and it is a game adaption! Who would have ever thought eh? The bad? The script is a little generic, and a few scenes suffer for it, but this is a action adventure based on a game, I would be surprised if it was not a bit generic and cliche at times. And there was a couple of moments where CGi was not perfect and/or the directing could use some work, but the CGi here is much, much, much better than Black Panther or Justice League so no real complaint. The good? Within the action/adventure genre this is a top movie. And as a game adaption I would argue it is the best of its kind. That is what I based the score of 9/10 on. As a movie this is more around 7,5/10. Vikander is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. The supporting cast is great, the music great, visuals great, story (although slightly generic) is also great. Best thing with this movie though is that when you leave the theatre you will have a smile on your face. I highly recommend, but just relax. This is not a cinematic masterpiece, but it is a fun ride and go see it expecting a really entertaining action/adventure and you´ll not be disappointed. Expand

I'm placing my score much higher than it probably should be only because I played the game and really appreciated all the references to the video game. The best scene of the movie was her jumping off the ship, the ship scene was really reminiscent of the video game. The villain was a very typical villain and the action scenes were hit or miss. I thought the story was decently done but the video game portrays it much better. His death was a bit laughable and I thought it was funny how it turned into The Last of Us with the infected. Angelina Jolie was spot on as the original Lara Croft with her swagger and larger than life charisma. Alicia Vikander is just as perfect a fit for the new 2013 rebooted Lara Croft. As in the rebooted game series, she's younger, less self assured, more human in scale, and ripped like no woman I've ever seen outside of a professional MMA fighting arena. Smartly the game reproduces some of the 2013 game set pieces. I've always thought it strange how movies based on games will just ignore many things that made the games popular. Tomb Raider doesn't make this mistake ... well ... it could have used more characters on Lara's side. In the game the boat was full of people who later ended up on the island with Lara. In the movie, the boat only has one other person, the captain.

So we get great visuals, good pacing, and a star who is as intense as Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and whose skin is always glinting with sweat and rippling with muscles like an atlas of human anatomy.

The downside to the movie is that the story is fairly standard and Lara doesn't have many friends to interact with. She basically has one sailor and later another character, and that's it. I said above it was smart for the movie to reproduce some of the games best set pieces. Well, the game put more people on Lara's side in the movie, and I wish the movie had followed suit. Also, if we are going to have a more realistic human scale Lara, we need a more realistic nuanced story.

It’s the Tomb Raider reboot that no one really asked for, but we got it, and it isn’t bad at all.

This new action adventure time is based on the 2013 Tomb Raider game, with element of Rise of The Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vikander as the iconic Lara Croft; the bike courier?

This is a iteration of Tomb Raider that takes itself more seriously, but in a way, it also doesn’t and that may by why is appeals to me. It presents itself as a ‘fun’ action adventure film, the type you’d adore as a child. It did something that not many video game adaptions have done, which is actually stay true to the games.

Alicia Vikander does a fantastic job at portraying Lara Croft, a more realistic version who takes those Indiana Jones kind of bumps. Even with some of the most basic moments, Vikander manages to add more dimension with her character.

But of course, there were a couple downfalls, The first being the action scene, well lack of. These scenes were rather entertaining and relatively well done but there wasn’t enough of it, feel like it was all left to the final act. The second was the poor CGI. It has definitely come a long way but it is almost on par with the appalling effects of Justice League, which were similar to Play Station 1 gameplay which I don’t think was the intention.

Although the story was predictable, I did appreciate the twisty ending, which suggests a sequel or follow on of sorts. I do hope they make one, as we are now left on an inconclusive cliff hanger.

Overall a solid action piece (in the last act), maybe a little predictable in places, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is enjoyable.

Alicia Vikander portrays a young Lara who is more vulnerable, similar to the 2013 game, except her spin on Lara is definitely distinctive. While my only complaint is that the beginning delves too much into the backstory of Lara before she undertakes her first adventure, to learn so much about this version of Lara allowed for a deeper connection to her character. It was filled with action, and some of the sequences were reminiscent of what happened in the 2013 game, which was done so well. I do hope that we get a sequel with this Lara, because I feel that there is so much potential. Expand

This movie is based on the Tomb Raider 2013 (reboot), but with some changes in the characters and storyline in order to make this more like a movie and less like the original game. Despite that, there are a lot of situations and action that are directly linked with some scenes of the game, so it's great for fans like me to recognise these situations.
I really would like to see a second part of the movie, this time based of course with Rise of the Tomb Raider.
I would give this movie an 8 or a 9, but because it's actually the first Tomb Raider movie that I really enjoy, I will give it a 10.

Tomb Raider is a great film, Alicia Vikander does you forget former Lara's. Good acting, great suspense and acting, fantastic fighting scenes. The film is beautifully made. A feast for your eyes and ears especially in IMAX theatres.

This movie was really enjoyable, fun and entertaining. Great pacing. Good cast. Good sets. Great lead. Like a new kind of Indiana Jones movie. I am glad it sets up a sequel. Make more like this.

I was skeptical at first, but this movie surprised me! It is very well done, I never watched a movie with Vikander before, but she was phenomenal in the movie! Her acting is almost perfect.

It certainly is the best movie about a videogame.

I hoped it would be half way decent, but let's be real, video game adaptations don't have the best track record. But Tomb Raider exceeded my expectations! It was REALLY good! This is a solid action adventure film in the vein of Indiana Jones meets National Treasure meets the Hunger Games. It's a fun time. You don't have to know anything about the character in order to enjoy it... but if you DO love the game series, you are in for a real treat. THIS is how you do VG adaptations.

The acting is top notch and a big reason this film succeeds. Combine that with a fast pace, good world building, solid supporting characters, and the bravery to NOT jump the shark with the story... and you have a winning combo on your hands. The plot is based on reboot game, not a remake of original movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Almost great but not really that interesting. While watching I hoped it won't fantasy like it was hinted but in the end I really was disappointed it wasn't. The reality factor about the "treasure" was extremely disappointing. No surprises, no climaxes, not so great action. Expand

I think this film just goes to show the critics once again can get it wrong and like some other user reviews have said, this game to film adaptation is likely to be one of the best ones yet. It follows the Tomb Raider game released in 2013 but with many differences. I honestly felt Vikander held a striking resemblance to the new Lara and I really fell for her performance. I could feel in every action scene how the game would have played out, such as having to repeatedly tap a button on the controller just to get out of some intense or dramatic scenario. I felt the pacing of the story was reasonable, the acting in general was pretty good too.

Overall a pretty entertaining movie.

She even CHEATS in a for-money and on-the-streets bike race on the streets of London that would, in reality, have injured or killed several innocent bystanders. Not off to the most sympathetic of starts, for the character OR the movie (at least not in my book)!

Fortunately, things pick up substantially after we leave the early urban environments, and in no time we're launched into a suitably rollicking Indiana Jones-esque adventure with the odd moment of iffy CGI. It's a very decent ride just the same - if more than a bit predictable - and probably about as good as the first Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movie, and slightly better than the second, so...a perfectly solid modern blockbuster, even if it's barely a patch on Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Hell: even the Brendan Fraser version of The Mummy ain't THAT good!)

They mainly used the well made and received 2013 video game reboot as template for the story. They also made deviations from that story and it surprisingly works well. I played ant enjoyed the game so I was pleased with the setting and surprisingly even more with the changes. It is the story of a young Lara Croft who starts her first adventure. Her father went missing some time ago and is declared dead. She is struggling to accept it and the fortune she will inherit. She believes that her father is alive and wants to find him on her own. I stop here with just the set up and only say that the story is engaging with good twist and menacing obstacles. I like what they created. Especially one menace you will easily know which makes this movie brilliant. For the actors they chose well. Alicia Vikander is excellent and was nominated for the Oscar for the Danish Girl. She delivers the role of a hero in the making or unpolished diamond. It is more grounded and I know that this is a hilarious remark for a video game adaptation but it is fitting here. Walton Goggins is a excellent adversary and shines in his scenes. Daniel Wu and Kristin Scott Thomas have smaller roles but do their best. The interactions are good but I think they could do better. The sets and visuals are really good. I like also the puzzles and obstacles they have to overcome. There are of cause some bad things. One plot twist is generic and out of touch or unbelievable. It harms the movie. Lara / Alicia cant shine as much as she should. She is hold back by the script. Also she makes a dumb move. If she inherited the fortune she would have solved many problems with ease and it changes nothing. A signature under a contract / testament is not the same as admitting your father is dead. At the end I will also praise the resolve and set up for a sequel. You want more and to see how it will continue. Overall a good video game adaptation with some flaws that prevent a 10/10 rating. It is still a really good movie and I just read that a sequel is on the way for 2021. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This really is a movie that is just as you'd expect - rather formulaic and reliant on CGI/effects and action scenes to keep you watching. Of course im sure that it will have done well from male fans of Jolie who will/will have enjoyed watching gun-toting Jolie in her skimpy skin revealing garb, full of attitude and so on, that will have been the main pull of the movie, although I discovered that actually the case is more varied and interesting, including not just ms Pitt but also Daniel Craig (who I could have sworn had a pretty cringeworthy accent feature in at least one scene, though later on I didn't notice it, which is a bit strange, maybe I mis-heard?) and even Chris Barrie, which I thought was rather random!. I'll admit to having never played the video games that this movie is based on but then I'm reviewing the movie rather than the game, so I suppose it shouldn't matter too much, although I used to be quite a fan of video games, particularly platform games and watching this movie I could see at some points clues as to what the games must be like, with some of Lara's movements and actions, I suppose.

A little bit of trivia thats worth mentioning, I suppose, is that Jon Voight, ie Angeline Jolie-Pitt's father, stars in this movie as Lara Croft's late father. I believe this was the first movie that Angelina starred alongside her father and with him playing her characters father, I suppose there's maybe an irony there, also I know that in real life father and daughter haven't got along too well and in the movie, she wishes that she had more time with her father, so I wonder if this hit home with her at all? probably not, I think it was after this movie was shot when the relationship went a bit sour but anyway, thats not got alot to do with the movie but I thought it may be interesting for any movie fans who weren't aware of it.

Back to my thoughts on the movie and really its a very bog standard action movie that is pretty superficial, as you may expect. It relies mainly on visual aspects to keep you entertained, though I would say that as the movie heads towards its climax with Lara Croft, Alex West (Daniel Craig's character) and Manfred Powell battling it out for the triangle, it is quite entertaining and there are certainly enough CGI/visual effects to make it worth watching. The movie is partly set in Cambodia and there are some nice shots of the jungle based area there with some children playing about which is quite nice to see, plus the action scenes are decent enough, so its not a totally rubbish film but neither is it one that really grabs my attention. I would have thought that fans of movies such as the Indiana Jones movies may be keen to see this, as it has a somewhat similar premise, only that here the 'Tomb raider' aka someone who invades ancient tombs/cave like areas in search of ancient old artefacts etc. (which is surely similar to what Indiana Jones does?) is female. I don't think I've bothered with the Indiana Jones movies so again I apologise but I can't really comment on how it compares but from the clips I've seen of those movies, thats what comes to mind in terms of similar movies.

In this instance, I'd say that this is perhaps more for fans of the video game or otherwise, fans of general action movies looking for an easy watch as this movie certainly doesn't require your brain to be switched on, put it that way, infact it could be a bit of a nuisance as I remember thinking at times that the plot seemed a bit dis-jointed (I thought Lara had under 10 hours to find the two parts of the triangle and later on her colleague seems to say that there's 15 hours left?!) but then its not meant to be about the story really, lets face it. Its all about the effects, the CGI/effects and the cast and the cast I found quite amusing at times and I thought that the effects made it pretty entertaining, so I can't totally dismiss it, as im sure some people (male admirers of Jolie-Pitt for the most part, thougj Daniel Craig fans may also enjoy it - there is one scene where he gets out of the shower in his suite naked and walks around the room but alas not all is actually shown lol...not that he's my type but anywhhoooo) will enjoy it at least in part at least.

I suppose I should say that I like that this movie seems to have a good mix of US and UK acting talent, from Chris Barrie and Daniel Craig to Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie/Jolie-Pitt, although, as I've hinted at already, this is by far an oustanding movie but I suppose it isn't too often that you see a cast like this in such a Hollywood movie (and this is a particularly 'Hollywood' movie).
