Solid action flick.I'm surprised this film got a lot of weak reviews from professional reviewers.

Script made sense and kept me interested. Fun action sequences. They tried some neat new things here: an action sequence involving a ladder, aSolid action flick.I'm surprised this film got a lot of weak reviews from professional reviewers.

Script made sense and kept me interested. Fun action sequences. They tried some neat new things here: an action sequence involving a ladder, a tomb trap, and the revelation of the what the prize they're searching.

Vikander and the rest of the cast all do a good job. (Surprised they got Derek Jacobi for a minor role that anyone could have played.) I heard complaints that Walton Goggins didn't play a more magnetic antagonist like he did in any films. However, I think this spoke to his ranger. I though it was a nice change of pace to play a nasty, desperate man who attempts to put on a thin veil of normalcy.

Camerawork was interesting. They went with a Daniel Craig-James Bond shaky-cam/psuedo documentary feel to it which I felt made the film feel more grounded than some action movies without making the film feel like it was trying too hard to be realistic. The nighttime and cave scenes were too dark, though.… Expand

Excellent movie. It has Action, Adventure, Mythology, Magic/Mystery, Puzzles. It's not perfect, at the beginning it has a pretty funny & silly plot but after the first act it rises surprisingly. Pretty boring movie in fact: the photography is well executed and there is not a single doubt about that, but the acting and the story are far too much to the level of a very average B movie. Oh and spoiler warning, the film was a mockery of the incredible work, thought and effort that went into the rebooted game franchise.

The game (as created by SquareEnix) was a story about an arrogant young girl trying to prove herself better than her father who’d committed suicide. Through numerous tribulations she was slowly broken, humbled and found the inner will to become what she was destined to be. Through sheer determination and grit, she began to discover the truth about her family and unlearned all that she took for granted in terms of faith and trust. With powerful dialogue and criticism of organised religion, Lara found in herself the resolve and strength to stop an ancient evil and set herself on the path to become the Tomb Raider.

The new Lara was the antithesis of the original video game. No tight shorts, pistols or pointy boobs, the new Lara was real - a relatable heroine who needed no man to get **** done. Just watch the behind the scenes videos. They knew Lara had become a sex symbol for horny boys and wanted to turn her into something that could inspire a new generation of gamers.

Sounds awesome, right? But let's talk about the movie. How did Hollywood handle all the depth of the new Lara? They turned it into a mockery of about a weak heroine with intense daddy issues who constantly needs to be rescued.

You trivialised her trials and pain, instead taking a visual symbol from each conquest and turning it into a bizarre, unrelated plot element. You destroyed the important scene where she was forced to kill for the first time and all the pain and mental anguish that was portrayed so perfectly by the voice actress was pissed away in two seconds of screen time before daddy dances onto the set like some kind of demented garden gnome.

You turned one of the best reboots into a sad shadow of a film where Lara can’t do anything without crying for her father. Oh, and to make it worse, you took all of the supernatural themes out and turned it into something mundane - stripping it of the fantasy and incredibly, the reality.

But hey, let’s just end it by showing the guns that tie this heap of steaming **** with the even ****tier movies starring Angelina and make all those fans happy, eh?… Expand

As a fan of the reboot of the Tomb Raider games I’ve gotta say that this film is a great effort. Alicia does an awesome job and I really hope they make a sequel. Great stuff. I 100% recommend watching Tomb Raider.

I have not had this much fun in the theatre since I saw Deadpool. After seeing so many really bad movies in 2017, and not a single movie I liked so far in 2018, I finally found a movie worth the ticket price - and it is a game adaption! Who would have ever thought eh? The bad? The script is a little generic, and a few scenes suffer for it, but this is a action adventure based on a game, I would be surprised if it was not a bit generic and cliche at times. And there was a couple of moments where CGi was not perfect and/or the directing could use some work, but the CGi here is much, much, much better than Black Panther or Justice League so no real complaint. The good? Within the action/adventure genre this is a top movie. And as a game adaption I would argue it is the best of its kind. That is what I based the score of 9/10 on. As a movie this is more around 7,5/10. Vikander is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. The supporting cast is great, the music great, visuals great, story (although slightly generic) is also great. Best thing with this movie though is that when you leave the theatre you will have a smile on your face. I highly recommend, but just relax. This is not a cinematic masterpiece, but it is a fun ride and go see it expecting a really entertaining action/adventure and you´ll not be disappointed.… Expand

Finally a good video game movie or adaption of a video game. Based on the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot series, Tomb Raider was enjoyable and I thought it did really well separating itself from Angelina Jolie early 2000 movies. I'm placing my score much higher than it probably should be only because I played the game and really appreciated all the references to the video game. The best scene of the movie was her jumping off the ship, the ship scene was really reminiscent of the video game. The villain was a very typical villain and the action scenes were hit or miss. I thought the story was decently done but the video game portrays it much better. His death was a bit laughable and I thought it was funny how it turned into The Last of Us with the infected. Overall, I would give it a 6.6.… Expand

It's impressive how well the original Tomb Raider movies, and this reboot, were cast. Angelina Jolie was spot on as the original Lara Croft with her swagger and larger than life charisma. Angelina Jolie was spot on as the original Lara Croft with her swagger and larger than life charisma. Alicia Vikander is just as perfect a fit for the new 2013 rebooted Lara Croft. As in the rebooted game series, she's younger, less self assured, more human in scale, and ripped like no woman I've ever seen outside of a professional MMA fighting arena. Smartly the game reproduces some of the 2013 game set pieces. I've always thought it strange how movies based on games will just ignore many things that made the games popular. Tomb Raider doesn't make this mistake ... well ... it could have used more characters on Lara's side. In the game the boat was full of people who later ended up on the island with Lara. In the movie, the boat only has one other person, the captain.

So we get great visuals, good pacing, and a star who is as intense as Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and whose skin is always glinting with sweat and rippling with muscles like an atlas of human anatomy.

The downside to the movie is that the story is fairly standard and Lara doesn't have many friends to interact with. She basically has one sailor and later another character, and that's it. I said above it was smart for the movie to reproduce some of the games best set pieces. Well, the game put more people on Lara's side in the movie, and I wish the movie had followed suit. Also, if we are going to have a more realistic human scale Lara, we need a more realistic nuanced story.… Expand

This is a iteration of Tomb Raider that takes itself more seriously, but in a way, it also doesn’t and that may by why is appeals to me. It presents itself as a ‘fun’ action adventure film, the type you’d adore as a child. It did something that not many video game adaptions have done, which is actually stay true to the games.

Alicia Vikander does a fantastic job at portraying Lara Croft, a more realistic version who takes those Indiana Jones kind of bumps. Even with some of the most basic moments, Vikander manages to add more dimension with her character.

But of course, there were a couple downfalls, The first being the action scene, well lack of. These scenes were rather entertaining and relatively well done but there wasn’t enough of it, feel like it was all left to the final act. The second was the poor CGI. It has definitely come a long way but it is almost on par with the appalling effects of Justice League, which were similar to Play Station 1 gameplay which I don’t think was the intention.

Although the story was predictable, I did appreciate the twisty ending, which suggests a sequel or follow on of sorts. I do hope they make one, as we are now left on an inconclusive cliff hanger.

Overall a solid action piece (in the last act), maybe a little predictable in places, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it is enjoyable.… Expand

Video games movies has a really terrible history.Most of games can't be adapted to a film,bc they are super long and films are usually only 2-3 hours.2016,Assassin's Creed was awful,Warcraft was a better one but wasn't not a solid film,the cast,the pacing,the plot was terrible eventhough the visual was spectacular.Tomb Raider was fine, mostly came from Alicia Vikander's performance as Lara Croft and the action sequences,the bike scene at the opening was also really good,they did the character right However the film had a lot of problems,the pacing and the storytelling could have been better,jokes fell flat.Overall,as a video game adaptation:Good,as a adventure film:Fine ,definitely better than most video games movies but could have been better with the plot(7/10)… Expand

She's still difficult to relate to as her heritage doesn't just magically fade away despite the fact that the film finds her choosing to live below her means. It was a pretty hokey idea anyway if you ask me. Especially since it doesn't make sense for her to not use the Croft fortune as a means fund the adventure when you consider she was already in the process of accepting it before finding out about the island where her father was last known to be. Watching her get pummeled in the boxing ring was way more effective at humanizing her.

None of this would have mattered though if it weren't for Vikander as it's her that makes the character so intensely likable and not the change in lifestyle. She may not have the same sex appeal Jolie had back in 2001, but she manages to bring her own charm to the role and displays a remarkable physicality that lends itself well to the action sequences. All in all I'd say she's a fine heir to the Croft mantle and fits this new take on the source material by effectively matching Angelina's original performance without emulating it.

The movie follows in the same direction as the recent video games. This trial by fire origin story has a more grounded, desperate tone and gives some added brutality to the fights and stunts. Things are a lot of fun, but I do feel that the plot gets bogged down with too much exploration of Lara's daddy issues. This is really only a problem because the necessary emotion just isn't there. When they finally get to the actual tomb things play out like your standard Indiana Jones flick, only without the same level of urgency. Before that our time on the island is spent watching Lara try to survive her captors and the various dangers present in the environment itself. Those parts are much more interesting. The set-pieces are suitably entertaining ensuring that the movie is a solid bit of popcorn entertainment all the way through.

Something's not quite right with Tomb Raider's visuals. Everything looks kind of cheap, giving the whole thing much more of a B-movie feel than it otherwise would have had. Sometimes this works in it's favor as it reminds us that this is just meant to be a bit of dopey fun. Other times, not so much.

As far as the supporting cast goes, there's a real standout performance from Daniel Wu. While he wasn't portrayed as Lara's love interest, one might not have minded if he had of been. He's got a natural charisma and would make an excellent Wei Shen in a Sleeping Dogs adaptation should Square Enix ever choose to go that route. Walton Goggins as the film's villain is a surprising letdown. He's forced to give a really restrained performance and it doesn't suit him. Based on the works I've seen him in, he's at his best when allowed to cut loose and let the craziness fly. Dominic West is fine, but isn't really given much to do. That Nick Frost cameo is pretty nice.

The Tomb Raider film reboot adapts the game reboot, effectively letting both sides of the franchise take the classic heroine to some harsher places. Even with a compelling new lead in the role, the question still remains; does this actually make for a better movie than the one we got back in 2001? In my opinion, not really. It's hits a lot of the same notes. The final showdown between Vikander and Goggins mirrors that of Jolie and Ian Glen's in a lot of ways. Even a lot of the flaws are the same like a slow opening before getting to the real meat of the experience (a bike chase helps the pacing out in this one a bit). The new direction does allow the formula to feel at least somewhat fresh again though. Plus the action is solidly executed which helps the film stay afloat when things aren't delivering narrative-wise. Ultimately however, whether or not you'll find the character and concept worth revisiting is going to depend on your enjoyment of the original movie. I personally found it flawed yet passable then, and so I find it flawed yet passable now.
