Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way. Hmmm, have you ever heard the following plot?: an introverted girl wrapped in an affair with the most popular boy for a series of strange coincidences, then he messes up, the woman learns something about her and finally end up together (known truth?). Only the viewer has during the intermission of the film, a couple of "funny scenes". The good thing from the movie turns out to be the performance of the actress. Expand

This film reminded me of the phenomenon that happened with ''Love, Simon'' in which by having a gay protagonist, it raised the quality of the film for a large part of the public just because of that.

''To All the Boys I've Loved Before'' has the same problem. The fact that its protagonist is of Asian origin has been more relevant than the actual quality of the film. But do not misunderstand my words, I don't think it's a bad film, but it's a too-basic teen romantic comedy. Its rules are the same and it fulfills them well but there's nothing innovative or memorable for that matter.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the story of this film, I liked the writing, I loved the chemistry between the leads. Some of the actors were great, others were just ok. Having said that, this is a remarkable example of what a very talented cast and crew can do with a tiny budget and just 21 days to shoot! Crazy! Nobody slept for a month, I would guess. There are a number of technical issues that made it into the final cut of the film. They're subtle, but they stick out and scratch some of the polish off of the final product. Biggest one was audio--throughout there were a number of noticeable lines dropping out (best example, whatever Lana Condor says as soon as she enters the hot tub is completely missed).

My biggest criticism of this film by far, though, goes to the direction of photography. Most of the angles used throughout felt isolating and awkward with not subjective reasoning behind it. Let's break the 180 degree rule here just cause, let's make these two angels not cut well together just cause, etc. This is my most subjective critique: I did not like the color grading on this either. Waaay too blue/turquoise. It felt like the movie was underwater throughout.

Other than that, great story! Absolutely worth a watch.

That being said this classic story line is done about as well as I could have been. The biggest weakness to this film has to be how rushed it felt, which made it imposable to feel attached to any characters outside of the two main ones. A couple things I found odd in the film. first, was how it copies the cinematography of Wes Anderson. Many scenes had the classic Wes Anderson symmetric background with the actor in the center of the shot. I would think was just a coincidence, but it happens so regularly throughout the film that it had to be intentionally trying to imitate Wes Anderson. second, the storyline feels like a copycat, running scarily close to the 1987 film Can’t buy me love. Overall, I enjoyed watching the film, mainly because I love the genre but in no way did it grow or revolutionize anything in the genre (other than the acting), ultimately making it an average film. 5/10 Expand

The protagonist Lara Jean is an introvert and has a tendency to shutting herself off from drama when one arises. Basically, it is one of those Wattpad romance stories that we females are all guilty of reading and swooning about. Expand
