Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way. Hmmm, have you ever heard the following plot?: an introverted girl wrapped in an affair with the most popular boy for a series of strange coincidences, then he messes up, the woman learns something about her and finally end up together (known truth?). Only the viewer has during the intermission of the film, a couple of "funny scenes". The good thing from the movie turns out to be the performance of the actress. Expand

This is a movie that is enjoyed only if you don't watch this genre very often. It takes a bread and butter formula executes everything with great care. Acting only falls short a few times, but cinematography and pacing more than makes up for it.

It's this timeless coming-of-age dilemma that is given a fresh twist in this Netflix original film. To All The Boys I've Loved Before was surprisingly tender, and surprisingly funny. The leading performance by Lana Condor is really great. She's incredibly vulnerable and relatable, and she carries the weight of the film easily on her shoulders. The story is really fresh and nice, if a little bland at points. This was a movie that really caught me off guard by how well it was crafted. Hats off to everyone involved! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film does one thing that every Rom-com should, it makes me smile. It's the kind of film that you can bond with your friends over. It's beautiful, emotional and charming. I love the character of Lara Jean, shes just a very likeable and believable character, someone who I, as a 17-year-old teen can relate to on an emotional level. I completely buy Peters and Lara Jeans relationship because unlike some movies like The Kissing Booth where the couple feels over-sexualized, in this movie they focus on their conversations and making a real connection over time. I just really love this movie, its teen romance done well. Expand

Dear Jenny,
I am disappointed that Asian males were basically excluded in a novel written by an Asian female author. Your novel To all the Boys I've Loved Before doesn't contribute anything to changing existing stereotypes when it had so much potential to. Your novel glorifies the White Male Asian Female (WMAF) relationship, from Lara Jean's parents to the main plot of the story. It upholds the white supremacy and excludes Asian males as romantic options. What's worse is that your novels are targeted at teenage girls, so you're indoctrinating them with white worshiping attitudes from a young age. When your primarily female fan base grows up, they would socially exclude Asian males in favor of white males and propagate existing racial hierarchies in society. Why couldn't LG have a Korean father and a Caucasian mother? Why were none of the letters that LG wrote addressed to an Asian male? Your novel seems like one Asian woman's fantasy about dating white guys. Which is fine, but you should be more cautious of the societal impact and excluding an entire racial/gender group.

Netflix’s adaption of the Jenny Han novel is executed to heartwarming perfection. This is a coming of age story that explores the power of all forms of relationships and the undeniable beauties and struggles that accompany them.

A cute teen romance movie, that isn't perfect but gives the right amount of humor and romance. While it doesn't meet the same level as other high school movies, like Easy A or Mean Girls, it manages to be a decent piece in its own way.

This film reminded me of the phenomenon that happened with ''Love, Simon'' in which by having a gay protagonist, it raised the quality of the film for a large part of the public just because of that.

''To All the Boys I've Loved Before'' has the same problem. The fact that its protagonist is of Asian origin has been more relevant than the actual quality of the film. But do not misunderstand my words, I don't think it's a bad film, but it's a too-basic teen romantic comedy. Its rules are the same and it fulfills them well but there's nothing innovative or memorable for that matter.

Firmly in the teen romance world, Boys walks a delicate line between sappy teen drama and actual, complex emotional dynamics. Condor deftly handles the script, making this one of the best teen dramas to come out in recent years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the story of this film, I liked the writing, I loved the chemistry between the leads. Some of the actors were great, others were just ok. Having said that, this is a remarkable example of what a very talented cast and crew can do with a tiny budget and just 21 days to shoot! Crazy! Nobody slept for a month, I would guess. There are a number of technical issues that made it into the final cut of the film. They're subtle, but they stick out and scratch some of the polish off of the final product. Biggest one was audio--throughout there were a number of noticeable lines dropping out (best example, whatever Lana Condor says as soon as she enters the hot tub is completely missed).

My biggest criticism of this film by far, though, goes to the direction of photography. Most of the angles used throughout felt isolating and awkward with not subjective reasoning behind it. Let's break the 180 degree rule here just cause, let's make these two angels not cut well together just cause, etc. This is my most subjective critique: I did not like the color grading on this either. Waaay too blue/turquoise. It felt like the movie was underwater throughout.

Other than that, great story! Absolutely worth a watch.

That being said this classic story line is done about as well as I could have been. The biggest weakness to this film has to be how rushed it felt, which made it imposable to feel attached to any characters outside of the two main ones. A couple things I found odd in the film. first, was how it copies the cinematography of Wes Anderson. Many scenes had the classic Wes Anderson symmetric background with the actor in the center of the shot. I would think was just a coincidence, but it happens so regularly throughout the film that it had to be intentionally trying to imitate Wes Anderson. second, the storyline feels like a copycat, running scarily close to the 1987 film Can’t buy me love. Overall, I enjoyed watching the film, mainly because I love the genre but in no way did it grow or revolutionize anything in the genre (other than the acting), ultimately making it an average film. 5/10 Expand
