That’s coming from a someone who has seen The Wicker Man 15 times precisely because it’s a bad Nick Cage movie. This film doesn’t start great and doesn’t have a great middle and I was totally checked out by the time the third act began and considered walking out but figured it couldn’t be much longer. The problem is that it does not have enough ideas. The premise is great but it devolves quickly into cliches… and not the good kind you’d expect from a satirical type movie, rather the type of cliches a script relies on when it doesn’t have enough ideas to float a story. The result is a movie with a lot of potential that feels half baked. Expand

While the movie is supposed to be full of itself, the movie is full of itself even so. The movie feels like it is either trying too hard or not trying at all. Contradictions make great movies, but not in this case. The script was weak. The acting wasn't exactly strong and the sets weren't very visual. Watch if you are on an airplane, it's free and you have no other choices. Expand

I didn’t like the characters of his wife or daughter who were condescending and nasty to him anytime they were onscreen, Hollywood gives us strong women but in a bad way, I felt bad for Cage who had to be emasculated, demeaned and criticized every time they did a scene together. If you enjoy watching a guy get yelled at by angry harpies over and over without really defending himself, maybe you’ll feel different. There also were moments that they should have continued the scene but they change instead to the next one, like when Cage realizes he had been treating the owner of the house as a servant all of the sudden. This movie could have been better but it was still somewhat entertaining thanks to Cage and the guy who played his fan. Don’t go too far out of your way to see it though. Expand

Nicolas Cage plays himself, with a fictionalized family and failing career. When he loses a big potential role, he accepts $1 million to be the guest at a birthday party for a superfan (Pedro Pascal). Meanwhile, he gets recruited by the CIA to help bring down this notorious gangster who's masterminded a kidnapping. What starts as a self-satire turns into an action film. The comic potential in the situation is hopeful, but the funny never materializes. Ditto for any excitement on the adventure side. Cage certainly embraces a chance to go over the top, but that's his thing, so nothing new here. Otherwise, it's a rather bland attempt at satire, both of Cage and the action genre. Expand

But all other characters are beyond forgettable; can't believe Tiffanny Hadish keeps suffering from irrelevant film roles. Anyway, if you want a good meta film starring Nicolas Cage, go and check out 'Adaptation.' Expand

A little too cringe in a lot of moments with plenty of awkwardness. As always, Pedro Pascale is amazing but Nick Cage has a manic energy that's really hard to deal with throughout. The premise is rather loose and I grow weary of seeing intelligence agencies painted as the good guy despite using blackmail, guilt and extortion to force people into working with them (usually resulting in their death)

Suffice it to say, if you're a huge fan of Pedro Pascale like I am, it might be worth a look but don't expect the second-hand anxiety to EVER decrease.

Sadly this didn't translate into the finished product. The great cast and production value weren't enough to push the entertainment needle above average. The comedy beats rarely hit and the near constant soundtrack and quick edits and pacing prevent any buildup of tension for the dramatic sections. Missed opportunity and yet a sense of fun throughout. Cringeworthy **** except for occasional laughs and limited wholesome moments. Poor performances by most of the actors (except Pedro Pascal, of course).

A funny meta meditation of himself in which he embraces the absurd without becoming a parody, and believe me when I say that this film could've easily fall into that, but the narrative works quite well, with all its ups and downs, mostly because Cage is a lead actor who knows how to sell himself and he does it quite well here by offering a fictionalized version of himself.

But while Cage is the star, Pedro Pascal as his onscreen partner is equally affable and shares an excellent chemistry with him.
Pascal works perfectly alongside him, and while his character is a big part of the plot, he knows when and how to let Cage take center stage. It's a great collaboration between the two.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent itself is an excellent title for this story, mostly because of what it implies for Nicolas Cage, because in a way it's a reflection of everything he has done in the last 15 years where he has made films of all kinds and at the same time exposes his legacy, his acting range and his relationship with his fans.

This is a full fleshed out comedy but it's also a kinda tribute full of easter eggs of his career that may seem simplistic in it's general reading, but it's the perfect showcase for an actor who accepts without any hint of guilt everything he has done in his career, and that as he himself said of his direct-to-video roles: ''Some of them were terrific but some of them didn’t work. But I never phoned it in. I was caring.''
And it looks like he cared about this one.

In theory this could be extraordinary, good or bad, but it rides right down the middle of exactly what your expectations are. It's completely watchable, and the acting is great, but the comedy is lazy and predictable. Pedro Pascal is very fun, and easily is the best part of the whole thing. I really enjoyed the more serious first half, but when it locked into the standard action movie second half I completely checked out. I tend to prefer Nic Cage's more serious roles these days, like Pig, because he is legitimately a great actor. I kept thinking that I'd rather be re-watching Hot Fuzz. Expand

The most important lesson to come out of this movie is that Paddington 2 is one of the best movies of all time.

Im not surprised, but this is a fan service, virtue signaling, incoherent film with some genuinely funny moments.

Intelligent metanarrative fun for the first 2/3 of the film, then it takes itself seriously and in the last 1/3 the selfparody becomes an action movie even if Tom Gormican is not John Woo.

While at times uneven and in later parts very predictable and run-of-the-mill, the performances of Cage & Pascal and an unrepentant weirdness make The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent a fun diversion for 107 minutes.

I can't say much about Nicolas Cage. Somehow I don't warm to his style. I found him good in Kick Ass and interchangeable in Face-Off. These are the only movies with this one that I've seen with him. These are the only movies with this one that I've seen with him. And in this film there are scenes that I didn't find bad, but also some that I found unpleasant. (Where his ex-wife and daughter arrive in Spain). I found the "meme" cage entertaining and funny. The basic principle has potential, which unfortunately is hardly used. It has entertaining moments, but the moments that are meant to be touching are more awkward and fake. Some scenes are entertaining and fun nonetheless. If you don't know what to watch or want to watch a relaxing movie, this movie works.
