Yes you heard that right, Nicolas Cage stars as Nick Cage in this buddy, character driven comedy/drama that all the die-hard Nicolas Cage fans will absolutely adore.

Cage is a struggling actor, severely strapped for cash (no really, this isn’t a biography) and agrees to make an appearance at a billionaire super-fan’s extravagant birthday party in Spain for a ridiculous amount of money. The only catch is the super-fan, Javi Gutierrez (Pedro Pascal) also happens to be a drug kingpin and Nicolas Cage reluctantly agrees to become an informant for the CIA. Now Cage must face his most difficult task yet and put all his acting talents into taking down his new best friend, Pedro Pascal.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in ages. Honestly the chemistry between Cage and Pascal make this so much better and I did not know we needed the hilarious duo that is Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal but it’s the gift that keeps on giving. Together they elevate the entire movie. The story itself is cheesy, ridiculous, hilarious, and definitely the comedic distraction we all need right now. It’s full on Nick Cage, and takes every moment it possibly can to reminisce previous Nick Cage movies. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent would not exist if it wasn’t for the history of the Nick Cage movies which range from the good, the bad and the what the hell is this. It’s silly and sweet in all the right places while also not afraid to make fun of itself.

Let’s be honest this movie was just made for the Nick Cage super-fans but it’s got something for everyone. Very entertaining with lots of laughs and a full of heart. Highly recommended for all and a must see for all the Nicolas Cage fans, and I know you exist. Get yourselves to the cinema to see The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Second, if you’re going to saddle yourself with thisTwo quick points: First, this film is not the long-awaited sequel to 1988’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” in which it is posited that meaning can exist only alongside mourning. Second, if you’re going to saddle yourself with this title – as an actor or as a creative team – you are either profoundly arrogant or hilariously self-deprecating. Fortunately, the lead actor and Director Tom Gormican took the latter route.

“Unbearable Weight …” is a tour de force for Nicholas Cage. Currently, the man has 109 film credits, including four projects now in post-production. He won a Best Actor Oscar in 1996 for “Leaving Las Vegas” and a nomination for 2002’s “Adaptation.” He also participated in 2018’s “Mandy,” which was credited by the Alliance of Women Film Journalists for “Most Egregious Age Difference Between the Leading Man and the Love Interest.”

In “Unbearable Weight…” Nick Cage (Nicolas Cage – see what they did there?!) is desperate to land the role that will re-establish him among Hollywood’s A-listers, although we are reminded, incessantly, that he never really left. He gets turned down for the role. In desperation, he accepts a $1 million fee to attend the birthday celebration of a devoted fan, Javi (an excellent Pedro Pascal – “The Mandalorian,” “Wonder Woman 1984”), who may also be a ruthless arms dealer. The CIA tries to enlist his help. Cage yells a lot. He drives cars – fast. He reminds us he did his own stunt driving in “Gone in 60 Seconds.” Things go boom. Cage is spurred along/tormented by his tragically digitally de-aged younger self Nicky (credited as Nicholas Kim Coppola). It’s all just fabulous.

The first half of this film is true movie bliss. It’s surprising, clever, filled with crackling dialogue, hilariously self-deprecating and has more laugh-out-loud moments than any film since “Booksmart.” These first 45 minutes make the entire enterprise totally worthwhile. It’s a letdown that the last half of the film devolves into a fairly by-the-numbers, plot-focused series of car chases and other escapades that detract from the tone of winking self-awareness.

The film includes regular references to Cage’s body of work, often involving bug-eyed high-decibel work by Cage himself. What makes the film inspired at points and sparkling throughout is that Cage is so entirely comfortable with self-deprecation, a man more than willing to explore his own mythology with a clear-eyed bemusement that’s much more than simple self-parody.

What’s completely unexpected is the genuine sweetness that perfuses the film. Cage and Javi seem bonded by genuine affection. But most of all, Cage communicates that he’s a movie star who wishes he’d been a better, less self-absorbed husband (possibly all five times). And he’s a clueless father who craves the love and respect of his daughter.

The tone of this project is best summed up by an interchange between Cage and his friend Javi: J: “Whether you like it or not, you have a gift. A gift that brings light and joy to an increasingly dark and broken world. And to turn your back on that gift, is to turn your back on the entire human race.”
NC: “The human race?”
J: “I’m afraid so.”

I'm a massive Pedro Pascal fan so I mainly wanted to see it because of him, but both Cage and Pascal delivered awesome and hilarious performances. While this movie is not groundbreaking and thought-provoking by any means, it was a genuine joy and I enjoyed every minute of it. Sometimes that's all a movie needs to be, and the actors and director knew that. The incredibly strong, yet unexpected, chemistry between Cage and Pascal is what made this movie so great. This film doesn’t start great and doesn’t have a great middle and I was totally checked out by the time the third act began and considered walking out but figured it couldn’t be much longer. The problem is that it does not have enough ideas. The premise is great but it devolves quickly into cliches… and not the good kind you’d expect from a satirical type movie, rather the type of cliches a script relies on when it doesn’t have enough ideas to float a story. The result is a movie with a lot of potential that feels half baked. Expand

This hasIn what honestly felt like some sort of cosmic culmination of all things good, not only did co-writer/director Tom Gormican manage to get Nicolas Cage to read his Nicolas Cage spec, but the man convinced Cage himself to star in it. This has to be the most transcendent meta-comedic event since the likes of "This Is The End" and "Tropic Thunder," no?

Was anybody else a bit let down by this?

Let me start off by saying this: "The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent" is by no stretch a bad film or time at the theater. It's a solidly structured, generally entertaining buddy movie with a pair of likable leads and some decent thematic groundwork. Did this movie capture what I think is the spirit of the zeitgeist's obsession with and celebration of Cage, his cult status and his body of work? I'm very sad to say that I just didn't. This is far too low energy and far too sensible in its approach to Nicolas Cage myth. We've already established this as being more of a "version" of Nicolas Cage, rather than an honest-to-god biopic of the man or even a depiction of actual events involving the man. Why not crank the madcap up to eleven? Lean harder into some of the criminally underutilized surrealism teased in the film? Why not actually showcase Cage's characteristically over-the-top commitment to the craft even more? That scene where Cage and Pascal are trying to scale the wall while on LSD? That's the energy I wanted for the entire film. Just didn't happen. No other moment, scene or sequence approached it. Again, all of this may appear to clash with the rating above, but this is all more out of frustration than a genuine belief in this being a "bad movie." I really just wish this went a bit harder and played up the promise of its premise in a more unique way. A disappointment to a degree, yes, but I suppose it could have been a whole lot worse.

I didn’t like the characters of his wife or daughter who were condescending and nasty to him anytime they were onscreen, Hollywood gives us strong women but in a bad way, I felt bad for Cage who had to be emasculated, demeaned and criticized every time they did a scene together. If you enjoy watching a guy get yelled at by angry harpies over and over without really defending himself, maybe you’ll feel different. There also were moments that they should have continued the scene but they change instead to the next one, like when Cage realizes he had been treating the owner of the house as a servant all of the sudden. This movie could have been better but it was still somewhat entertaining thanks to Cage and the guy who played his fan. Don’t go too far out of your way to see it though. Expand

Nicolas Cage is a special breed of movieWhat’s up, Streamers? The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent released in theaters this weekend. It is a movie that trades on the outsized and outrageous persona of Nicolas Cage as much of its hook. Nicolas Cage is a special breed of movie star. He’s had a prestigious career and he’s made a lot of interesting choices – from Leaving Las Vegas and Moonstruck to Con Air, Ghost Rider and National Treasure. Nicolas Cage always gives all of himself to his roles for better, or for worse. This movie has some meta-commentary of the stardom of Nicolas Cage surrounded by an action comedy. Here’s how it went.

In Massive Talent, Nicolas Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself called Nick Cage. Nick is a formerly successful actor, who desperately trying to hold on to his stardom. However, the most lucrative deal he can get is making an appearance for $1 million at a super fan’s birthday party in Spain. As these things go, the super fan is connected to a drug cartel and the CIA is watching this guy. Nick Cage gets recruited to infiltrate the compound and find the president of Spain’s kidnapped daughter. Nicolas Cage overacting and hijinks ensue.

This movie is pretty simple. The plot is fairly formulaic and obvious from the beginning. It definitely could be funnier. In fact, the funniest moment in the movie is already spoiled by the trailer. The reason anyone sees this movie is not for what happens but for who’s in it. Therefore, if you are not intrigued by the Nicolas-Cage-of-it-all, then there isn’t much else about the movie that will hook you. Most of the jokes, at Cage’s expense, have already been done before (ex. Andy Samberg as Nicolas Cage on SNL) – the only difference is that Cage is actively involved. It’s not really that sharp, or clever.

I will say that Nicolas Cages is totally committed to his part. He’s giving everything, and there are some chuckles because of his delivery. Cage is a special movie presence and so it makes sense that a movie would be made surrounding his persona. Pedro Pascal plays the super fan, who invited Cage to his party. Pascal is really funny. He’s the most memorable part of the whole thing. He definitely should get to play these zany parts more. On a side note: Tiffany Haddish is completely wasted in her role. I have no idea why she is even in this movie.

Ultimately, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is fine. It has its moments, but they are few and far between. Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal work well together, but the plot of the movie is nothing special. If you are a true Nic Cage fan, then you’ll probably dig all of the inside jokes and references to his filmography. If you are not such a fan, then this movie will probably be pretty forgettable to you. For the Cage fans, grab a big box of popcorn and don’t miss a chance to see your favorite guy be in on the joke. For the rest of you, this is fine for an afternoon on the couch with a handful of popcorn.

When I first heard about the premise of this one, I thought it sounded too good to be true. I thought to myself "there's no way this film is for real", but sure enough, it all turned out to be very real, and I can confidently say I'm glad it does, cause this film was a lot of fun! Nic Cage fully embraces his trademark whacky self, all while throwing fun and subtle little winks, nods, and Easter eggs to several films within his filmography. Alongside him is Pedro Pascal in a surprisingly heartfelt and scene-stealing performance. There's plenty of other great things on display to be found here too. Action, romance, comedy, suspense, occasional overacting from Cage (as is to be expected but very much enjoyed) you name it! And while the film does come out short in terms of elaborate action/set pieces thanks to its modest budget of only $30 million or so, get more than makes up for it with plenty of humor and heart to go around in the end. And even those who aren't huge fans of Cage are more than likely to still get a kick out of this film! Overall, decent action, a somewhat predictable storyline (despite the self-awareness of it all), and great and hysterical performances all around from all involved add up to make for a great meta-comedy, as well as A fitting and joyful tribute to the oddly delightful that is Nicolas Cage. A funny meta meditation of himself in which he embraces the absurd without becoming a parody, and believe me when I say that this film could've easily fall into that, but the narrative works quite well, with all its ups and downs, mostly because Cage is a lead actor who knows how to sell himself and he does it quite well here by offering a fictionalized version of himself.

But while Cage is the star, Pedro Pascal as his onscreen partner is equally affable and shares an excellent chemistry with him.
Pascal works perfectly alongside him, and while his character is a big part of the plot, he knows when and how to let Cage take center stage. It's a great collaboration between the two.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent itself is an excellent title for this story, mostly because of what it implies for Nicolas Cage, because in a way it's a reflection of everything he has done in the last 15 years where he has made films of all kinds and at the same time exposes his legacy, his acting range and his relationship with his fans.

This is a full fleshed out comedy but it's also a kinda tribute full of easter eggs of his career that may seem simplistic in it's general reading, but it's the perfect showcase for an actor who accepts without any hint of guilt everything he has done in his career, and that as he himself said of his direct-to-video roles: ''Some of them were terrific but some of them didn’t work. But I never phoned it in. I was caring.''
And it looks like he cared about this one.

I am so angry now that you told me this I am ready to...give you a hug and thank you!!"....its pretty annoying and I guess they teach this at free mason film school. /puke Expand

In theory this could be extraordinary, good or bad, but it rides right down the middle of exactly what your expectations are. It's completely watchable, and the acting is great, but the comedy is lazy and predictable. Pedro Pascal is very fun, and easily is the best part of the whole thing. I really enjoyed the more serious first half, but when it locked into the standard action movie second half I completely checked out. I tend to prefer Nic Cage's more serious roles these days, like Pig, because he is legitimately a great actor. I kept thinking that I'd rather be re-watching Hot Fuzz. Expand

The most important lesson to come out of this movie is that Paddington 2 is one of the best movies of all time.

Other than that, it's a pretty generic action comedy with the meta nature of Nick Cage playing Nick Cage. Unfortunately, there are stakes put into the film which slightly dampens the fun. I wish the movie was just Nick and Pedro vibing because those were the best parts of the film.

Intelligent metanarrative fun for the first 2/3 of the film, then it takes itself seriously and in the last 1/3 the selfparody becomes an action movie even if Tom Gormican is not John Woo.

Its definitely amusing and if you enjoy your action films, car chase scenes, explosions etc. then this is definitely one to watch. I suppose its pretty superficial but its certainly a fun film with plenty to distract and amuse, so I'd recommend it on that basis, yes (particularly if your familiar with the real Nicolas Cage's films). An entertaining ride in a movie that was written to be played by one man only, Nicolas Cage. While the plot could be more dynamic, this movie is about Cage is a role that's right in his wheelhouse.

While at times uneven and in later parts very predictable and run-of-the-mill, the performances of Cage & Pascal and an unrepentant weirdness make The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent a fun diversion for 107 minutes.

Ever since Wild at Heart and especially Leaving Las Vegas, I can't help but identify with him on some level. Given the premise of this film, you'd definitely need a soft spot in your heart for the lead if you expect any kind of entertainment value out of this silly farce. Cage and Pascal have great chemistry, Pascal manages to pull off a surprisingly decent performance. He's a natural fit for this role given his vapid, ego-centric personality in real life. Whether the filmmakers intentionally cast him to contrast the blissful ignorance and utter lack of self-awareness he routinely displays in public with Cage's self-deprecation, I'll let others decide. It certainly plays off well against Nick's manic energy and exploits his well known personal dramas for some cheap laughs at his own expense. At least there's one Hollywood actor left who doesn't consider himself to be the paragon of virtue and social justice, above even the slightest criticism, stunning and brave, to be admired by all. Bravo, Nick. Expand

(Where his ex-wife and daughter arrive in Spain). I found the "meme" cage entertaining and funny. The basic principle has potential, which unfortunately is hardly used. It has entertaining moments, but the moments that are meant to be touching are more awkward and fake. Some scenes are entertaining and fun nonetheless. If you don't know what to watch or want to watch a relaxing movie, this movie works.
