The New Daughter is one of those direct to DVD's movies that are rarely good. I can only name a few where I actually enjoy. I can only name a few where I actually enjoy. It's not the best horror movie out there but it's creepy enough to pass a Sunday evening. The New Daughter stars Kevin Costner as John James a novelist who gets divorced and has to take care of his kids on his own. He decides to move to the country to write his book and to be more interactive with his kids. His daughter Louisa (Ivan Baquero) and his son Sam (Gattlin Griffith) meet the required elements of kids in a typical horror movie just watch The Haunting of CT. Everything seems to go well a little hostility from Louisa but things are looking brighter. One day while exploring the kids find a huge mound at their backyard. Sam is terrified by it but Louisa is drawn to it and starts going there everyday. John notices it and starts as well to notice as well her changes in mood and behavior. The more John begins to uncover the truth, the worse it really is. The movie is recycled stuff I know but you know what, for being a direct to DVD movie is well made, well acted and I started to enjoy it. There is no Oscar winning performances here but everybody did what their roles needed. The director was able to maintain a good level of suspense and tension to produce the scares. Although the ending, I felt that they cheated. It's not a movie to run to the rental store or the retail store to buy it, but it's a good movie to spend the time catch it netflix or redbox. Expand

Sure enough, the initial moments of the movie proved me correct. But midway through, something happened. Aside from being well-acted from top to bottom (and I'm no Kevin Costner fan), the direction, lack of cheap gore, and genuine atmosphere of dread grabbed me. This is a film that creates terror not by constantly throwing "boo!" moments at its audience, but one that plays off the modern horror found in the demise of the "safe" family. No one knows how to protect their children any more. And this leads to one of the most horrific endings I've seen in years. Don't pass this one by. Will it change your life? Certainly not, but it's a heckuvalot better than most of the crap masquerading as horror fare that gets a theatrical release these days... Expand

It's not as horror as I thought but it's creepy enough. I'd say It's a mixture of M. Night Shyamalan (beginning to the middle part of the movie) and Stephen King (the middle towards the end). Expand

It is a great creep out of hell idea, done terrible, this is what this movie is, it starts familiar, gone bad, the worse, then...TERRIFYING, the acting was bad compared to other horror with kids like signs, the pacing is so BAD! Good God, I wanted to turn of that movie! But the near ending sequences stopped me and interested me, the ending was great, for me, but, for the last part I would've give it 10, but I need to judge the movie as whole so I say 5.5 out of 10, 2/5 and 49 out of 100 Expand
