I didn't get it. Was this a critique of the elite? Or was the chef a psychopath? Or both? The film didn't know where to rest. The film didn't know where to rest. Seemed like the result of a pitch where someone got stoned and said its "The Queens Gambit" meets "Scream" meets "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and her Lover." Dreck. And as someone else said, the fact that anyone was there eating or that they didn't leave early is ridiculous. Expand

Total nihilism. smug narcissism. Not the one displayed by the chef but by our main protagonist, and that last snarky smile, who will survive as it is evident from the start. Not the one displayed by the chef but by our main protagonist, and that last snarky smile, who will survive as it is evident from the start. The film is supposed to be a satire of consumerism, elitism, "patriarchy", our lack of meaning in our post-industrial so-called "Western"culture and all those clichés, but at its core, as displayed at the end, with the "double cheeseburger", it is populistic, hypocritical and manipulating. The chef quoting Dr King, as if he were himself a "victim of society" was simply revolting.

Sad to see great acting, Ralph Fiennes, wasted on this. Cinematography was also very slick but ultimately useless.

If you find gratuitous, bloody violence and death funny, you will love this movie. I wanted to use eye bleach after viewing as much of it as I could tolerate.

Trying too hard to be midsommar. Hard to enjoy, no one really has agency or motive. The villain just kind of does stuff. Why? No one knows.

I thought the trailer was screaming movie I wouldn’t like but considering the critics, I thought I’d give it a go. From the first few minutes, it was clear that I wouldn’t. The characters are stereotypical and without any depths; the acting is poor and annoyingly over the top; everything you could expect from the plot happens and overall, the storyline is just very… bad. I believe there’s meant to be dark humour elements in it, but the cringe acting didn’t make that work and the suspens just doesn’t build up at all. The climax of the movie, which is very obvious from the beginning, is just another disappointment. I believe it can be an enjoyable movie if you’re 12 but otherwise I found it to be bad mashup of other bad mainstreams concepts like escape room, the purge, etc. that adds nothing new to the mix. "The Menu" is a second-rate rendition of films such as "The Triangle of Sadness" addressing class conflicts and inequity. Second-rate doesn't quite cut it, though. One could say "lowest-rate" to do it some justice. Apart from the unoriginal plot and its bland tone, the stars of "The Menu" seem not to have given a damn about the upshot either, except Hong Chau who totally understood the assignment in this mess of a cast and crew.

I don't seem to like a lot of what A24 creates. That doesn't make them bad and I can take a step back and see that a lot of people enjoy their films. That doesn't make them bad and I can take a step back and see that a lot of people enjoy their films. However, "The Menu" as a work of art seems to miss the point that within its own premise that it brings up about the studio that created it. Can you smell your own farts to a point where you've gone too far and made something without questioning "what gives you the right?" People are allowed to not like your work. People can forget your work. Once it's put out in public people can come within inches of emotionally abusing any creation that you have made for their own gain. All of that said I'm going to say that this film didn't go far enough if that is what they wanted to do. They don't really set anything up and it really doesn't have much in terms of development for any character. I wasn't very shocking and you could see so many "twists" coming from a mile away. The characters here are all 2 dimensional and while they have a veneer of being interesting they are at best a cliche of what someone who has only lived in Hollywood could come up with. I can't recommend this one for any reason, but if you liked it I would check out the movie "Chef" with Jon Favreau. I think it has a decent representation of folk who appreciate food culture. Expand

this movie has no point, just why?! I can't answer you
even if you look at it from the perspective of social commentary .. why!? I watch a movie to enjoy myself not to see some grotesque overblown version of what I see every day

I can see it works for some people, but for me the attempt took out both the humor and - once the first shock landed - the horror. It soon became so redundant, so full of itself that by the final gag (which I'm sure the creators thought hilarious), I was wishing I could get this 107 minutes of my life back. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was bad. I don't understand, how people even like this movie. Most of the people just sat there and took it? No one tried to fight? The servers didn't even have weapons. This movie was just ridiculous is the worst way. He just randomly let the girl go for asking for a cheese burger...wow, just wow. Overall it was a lame plot with a lame premise. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. love the little nod to how expensive five star food means nothing if you truly don't enjoy it. I found myself hungry for some of the featured food, but the movie itself gives me a bitter taste. Honestly it could have been grittier, I get they were going for some kind of deep meaning but like most of my home dishes, this movie feels like stuff was just thrown together in hopes it would turn out good.
Not the best movie I've watched this year.

I was intrigued and excited on the first half, then it became meh and the ending is just a waste.

What is the point the movie is trying to make? That chefs are like cult leaders and that the rich and famous are cruel, corrupt and despicable? And they kill what the ones at the bottom love, or pretend to love, doing? And that it is okay for those at the bottom to destroy themselves and those above in a fiery blaze to purify it all?

I don't like this kind of nihilistic message: 0.

I do think however there was some originality and the performance by Ralph Fiennes was excellent and i feel like he was the one who kept me watching till the end.

Can't recommend, SKIP!
