Left me feeling unsatiated and not really caring about any of it towards the end. The cinematography itself was good, so some points for that. Expand

WhetherWith a sense of humor that's as black as coal and a bounty of performances that are in lockstep with its acerbic vision, "The Menu" achieves something that's definitely horror, but with a bit more to say than most films in the genre. Whether it's musing on classism, artistic relativism or workplace culture, I can't necessarily say the film's messaging is 100% defined by the end, but there's surely enough there for the viewer to think about once it's all over. Speaking of the ending, I can't say I vibe with it all that much. That's not to say I think a different, more thematically compromising ending would be preferred. I just think it leaves the viewer on a bit of a sour note and it's not exactly clear to me how the filmmakers want us to feel about things. Still, I enjoyed quite a great portion of this. If you're a foodie in any way, this is basically required viewing at this point, so I can't say I didn't get a kick out of what this movie was getting at. Expand

It could only exist in a delicate idealistic fantasy world where things conveniently move along for the antagonist. Few of the characters are likeable or even interesting, and most are like shallow caricatures rather than layered believable characters. I suppose it's better than most of the dumb modern horror films we've grown accustomed to, and there's some shining moments and performances in it, but it really flubbed a premise that could have been done far better with some deeper thinking even with some preposterous scenarios leftover. It just doesn't have the soul or depth to pull off what it's trying to do, and I was scoffing and laughing at moments that didn't seem meant for it, especially the end credits. It's not bizarre enough to be acceptably surreal, and it's not thought-out well enough to make the horrific scenes immersive. Very disappointing try-hard movie with a beautiful talented wasted cast. The previews initially really intrigued me to this one due to how vague things were kept as to what exactly the story was supposed to be about or what the hell was going on. So I arrived with a rather open mind and very eager to see what exactly what unfold and go down in this film. And while there's plenty of twists and turns and shock factor in store here, it's all unfortunately a little jumbled and surprisingly underwhelming in the end. While motives and explanations are revealed/given throughout, it all is told in a rather clumsy and disjointed manner that left me confused and raising my eyebrow moreso than satisfied. The ridiculous nature of it all only builds and builds as the film progresses until it all culminates into one of the most groan-inducing, anticlimactic, and just plain cringey and absurd endings I've seen in a while. Not even the performances of Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, John Leguizamo, etc. Could save this mess. Overall, an intriguing premise and marketing, but it couldn't save the jumbled, disjointed, and scattershot feeling of the finished result, leaving this one feeling thoroughly undercooked and unappetizing. Unfortunately the film burns through its intriguing premise and plot too quickly and one is left feeling like the film could have been better served with more style and substance like the variety of dishes it's narrative serves. It's plot is simple but with some amount of finesse. It's characters are stylistically paper thin but serviceable. A delightful if not entirely predictable ending twist brings the film to a decent finish. Overall The Menu is an enjoyably average film. Easily digestible and filling. Expand

It's decent fun but I failed to care about anything that was happening. The subtext (made explicit) of class conflict has already been done to death and writers should have something more interesting to say than "eat the rich". A braver film would have made us care more about the upper class characters and introduced more moral ambiguity. That feels like a missed opportunity. Expand

Every character in the film has their own faults, obsessions, and secrets that drive them to madness while maintaining their right appearance, especially in the resto. All of them were unable to handle situations when they became personally uncomfortable since they felt so insulted. That exposed their genuine nature and attitude toward it. This film also demonstrates how a person's internal changes can occur when a specific status, symbol, or level of income is attained, leading to the abandonment of common sense in favour of following a career. A big chef kiss is given to the story writing in the film. Despite being too dark for my tastes Expand

Not the one displayed by the chef but by our main protagonist, and that last snarky smile, who will survive as it is evident from the start. The film is supposed to be a satire of consumerism, elitism, "patriarchy", our lack of meaning in our post-industrial so-called "Western"culture and all those clichés, but at its core, as displayed at the end, with the "double cheeseburger", it is populistic, hypocritical and manipulating. The chef quoting Dr King, as if he were himself a "victim of society" was simply revolting.

Sad to see great acting, Ralph Fiennes, wasted on this. Cinematography was also very slick but ultimately useless.

I was somewhat invested until about halfway through. Poor choice for the male lead (beast douche). Ralph was the only real saving grace but since his character wasn’t fully realized he was underutilized and so the whole thing fell flat. Other reviewers go further in-depth about it and with them I agree—just an undefined antagonist and otherwise poor character work. It all felt so unsatisfactory at the end. I found it ironic and more entertaining to think that perhaps that was the point of the story (although it wasn’t).

Again, for the first third of the movie I thought it was going to be much better. It’s a shame it couldn’t follow through.

I thought the trailer was screaming movie I wouldn’t like but considering the critics, I thought I’d give it a go. From the first few minutes, it was clear that I wouldn’t. The characters are stereotypical and without any depths; the acting is poor and annoyingly over the top; everything you could expect from the plot happens and overall, the storyline is just very… bad. I believe there’s meant to be dark humour elements in it, but the cringe acting didn’t make that work and the suspens just doesn’t build up at all. The climax of the movie, which is very obvious from the beginning, is just another disappointment. I believe it can be an enjoyable movie if you’re 12 but otherwise I found it to be bad mashup of other bad mainstreams concepts like escape room, the purge, etc. that adds nothing new to the mix. One could say "lowest-rate" to do it some justice. Apart from the unoriginal plot and its bland tone, the stars of "The Menu" seem not to have given a damn about the upshot either, except Hong Chau who totally understood the assignment in this mess of a cast and crew.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult play 2 of a dozen guests who paid $1,225 for a gourmet dinner in a cool restaurant on a lonely island. For a reason that's never explained, the chef (Ralph Fiennes) decides that this meal will have some unpleasant surprises. The mystery builds thru each course, perplexing the diners and us with the final courses and their accompanying explanations getting more weird and extreme. Luckily, the ensemble is full of strong performances and director Mark Mylod has kept it compelling even though some of the confusing elements are never resolved. Ultimately, it's an adult thriller that's more intriguing than suspenseful, but the hints of satire give it a darkly funny edge. Interestingly, Triangle of Sadness (my review) makes similar statements about the uber rich. Expand

However, "The Menu" as a work of art seems to miss the point that within its own premise that it brings up about the studio that created it. Can you smell your own farts to a point where you've gone too far and made something without questioning "what gives you the right?" People are allowed to not like your work. People can forget your work. Once it's put out in public people can come within inches of emotionally abusing any creation that you have made for their own gain. All of that said I'm going to say that this film didn't go far enough if that is what they wanted to do. They don't really set anything up and it really doesn't have much in terms of development for any character. I wasn't very shocking and you could see so many "twists" coming from a mile away. The characters here are all 2 dimensional and while they have a veneer of being interesting they are at best a cliche of what someone who has only lived in Hollywood could come up with. I can't recommend this one for any reason, but if you liked it I would check out the movie "Chef" with Jon Favreau. I think it has a decent representation of folk who appreciate food culture. Expand

You never know when your next meal may be your last. Well, here we are a few days before the Thanksgiving meal in the U.S. feasting on some satirical and thrilling cinematic entertainment in The Menu. After watching this movie, you may think more critically about what and where you are eating. I ventured to the movie theater to enjoy what was promised to be a chilling dining experience. Here’s whether I was satisfied.

The Menu has a simple plot that is overflowing with complicated themes and motivations. A group of wealthy patrons travel to an exclusive restaurant, Hawthorne, which is owned by renown chef, Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), to have a coveted dining experience. Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) has invited a new girlfriend Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) to accompany him to enjoy what he believes will be a transcendent meal. Tyler is a “foodie” with a sophisticated palette, a deep admiration for Slowik, and a penchant for taking pics of his dishes. Margot is not as impressed with it all. The remainder of the guests are varying degrees of insufferable, and Julian barely contains his disgust for them despite his desire to deliver a memorable meal. Of course, things take a shocking turn. Lip smacking hijinks ensue.

The Menu is an experience, indeed. The movie promises shocking moments, and it delivers. The movie promises dark comedy, and I believe it checks that box as well. Although the plot is pretty slow to get started, once the group sits down for dinner and dishes gets served, the creeps and the giggles kick into high gear. The biggest issue – without spoiling anything – is that there isn’t a great explanation for why what is happening happens. While the guests are hilariously insufferable, some of the things that occur are random and therefore a little unsatisfying.

What is definitely satisfying are the performances by Ralph Fiennes and Anya Taylor-Joy. Fiennes fills his role as controlling and brilliant chef quite well. He’s menacing like Voldemort, but he is also eerily funny. Anya Taylor-Joy, who is great in basically everything she’s in, is a bright light here. She’s cunning and easily goes toe-to-toe with Fiennes. I’ll also shout out Nicholas Hoult as he has one of the other characters with a distinct and identifiable personality. The rest of the cast are generally caricatures of terrible people, but they don’t particularly standout.

Ultimately, Streamers, The Menu delivers a tasty dish. It has fresh bite with a tangy twist, spiced up by great performances of Fiennes and Taylor-Joy. Although some plot details feel random and characters aren’t especially detailed, the overall experience is thrilling enough to satisfy. While I’m not over the top about the movie, it is worthwhile for a matinee trip to the theater, so grab a bowl of popcorn. Be careful with whatever else you decide to order.

The Menu is a horror/satire/comedy that’s ultra-sharp and immensely entertaining. If you’re looking for a great movie to see in the cinema this week then there’s no question, this should be your choice.

Young couple Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) travel to a remote island to eat at the most exclusive restaurant. They are joined by a group of very wealthy individuals who don’t need to think twice about the cost to eat at such a restaurant where legendary chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu. This isn’t your ordinary menu and the surprises just keep on coming. What begins as a pretentious 10 course meal slowly turns dark and sinister with each new course.

I haven’t seen food look so delicious onscreen since the Hannibal TV show. The attention to detail is incredible. So expertly crafted you may end up coming out of The Menu craving some food. It’s an unpredictable horror that never lets up, and keeps you constantly on your toes. With a chilling performance from Ralph Fiennes as a brilliant chef. He commands every scene he’s in and has a formidable onscreen presence. Put alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and it’s the perfect recipe for an excellent satirical horror. From the moment the guests arrive at the remote island, things feel unsettling and everything about the meal gradually becomes more and more disturbing until it descends into a full blown horror movie.

The Menu has a brilliantly original script for a horror comedy. In the same month we’ve had two great satirical thrillers targeting the ultra-wealthy, between this and Triangle of Sadness. All I’ll say is there’s clearly an audience for this topic and I for one would love to see more of this. Although The Menu and Triangle of Sadness both have completely different stories, they have similar themes running throughout them. So if you enjoyed one, you’ll enjoy the other, seek them out and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

The Menu definitely won’t be to everyone’s tastes, horror comedies certainly aren’t for everyone. If you’re still unsure, the trailer gives you an idea without spoiling anything. It’s gripping, shocking and very entertaining. The Menu is exclusively in cinemas so don’t miss the chance to see it on the big screen. Highly recommended and a must see for those with a dark sense of humour.

Don't be fooled by the marketing, the star here is Ralph Fiennes and he proves it in every scene he shares with Taylor-Joy who completely pales in his presence.
His character is a mad genius, and not just about food. To over-explain would turn me into one of the characters this film criticizes and that would be the cherry on top of the cake for the dark satire of its premise, so the less you know the better and I'll save myself the embarrassment. The Menu was an unexpected but pleasant surprise for the end of the year.

Writers Seth Reiss and Will Tracy are both alums of “The Onion.” In a completely unpredictable development, they’ve written a satire. Well, it’s also part horror flick, part thriller. Overall, it’s an interesting offering.

In the Pacific Northwest, eleven guests take a boat to Hawthorne, an upscale restaurant that inhabits its own island. The group goes there to experience a tasting menu prepared by Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) and his staff. They pay $1250 per person for the opportunity. An enraptured foodie and his date attend. Other guests include three tech bros, a jaded uber-rich couple, a C list actor and his assistant, a food critic and her sycophant/editor.

Before each course, Chef claps his hands for attention and offers an introduction. The first course is “The Island,” a single scallop perched atop a rock, garnished with flowers from the island. The bread course includes dipping sauces with no actual bread and is entitled “Unaccompanied Accompaniments.” So it goes. But with each course, the tone becomes more foreboding. Eventually, the comedy turns very dark indeed. Tracy, Reiss and Director Mark Mylod (“Succession,” “Game of Thrones,” “Shameless”) obviously use this opportunity to skewer a foodie culture that seems to quickly and randomly elevate cooks/chefs to celebrity status. They also filet the rich (a topic thoroughly covered recently by “Glass Onion,” “Triangle of Sadness” and “Bodies, Bodies, Bodies”). However, “The Menu” does offer a new theme, implying that artistic excellence is inevitably followed by commercialization. They suggest that many art forms (Broadway, anyone?) engage in ever-escalating pricing, making it inevitable that art is consumed only by the wealthy, not necessarily the most knowledgeable or the most appreciative. In one telling scene, Chef Slowik engages the rich couple, who have attended eleven previous tastings. When confronted, the husband is unable to identify a single item he’s eaten during previous visits. Pearls before swine.

The acting here is superb, and makes “The Menu” worth consuming. Tyler the foodie (in a scene-stealing performance by Nicholas Hoult) and Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) are by far the most interesting characters. In Hulu’s “The Great,” Hoult mastered the role of blustering idiot. Here, he takes it to new heights. But it’s Taylor-Joy who fully captures our attention. With a “too cool for school” vibe, she sees through all the pretension and is the only character who’s fully able to master the situation. Tyler, Margot and the other guests provide a perfect foil for Fiennes, whose has previously demonstrated his consummate skill at portraying a raving maniac hiding beneath a veneer of placid professionalism (see “Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Coriolanus”). Overall, this may be the best ensemble cast of the year.

Despite these delectable performances, there’s something unfulfilling about “The Menu.” It incorporates a lot of ideas, but doesn’t develop any of them fully. Rather than integrating the action to develop a satisfying overarching theme, the film feels like a series of unrelated SNL sketches. Despite the elegance of its presentation, “The Menu” leaves us hungry for something more substantial, like a really juicy cheeseburger.

The trailer did look interesting and I was excited to see this film and start guessing what the plot was going to be. For me, when you mix food with horror, my direct response was that it could be about cannibalism but oh-boy oh-boy. Did this film surprise me!

Of course I am not going to give any spoilers but all I can say is that this film is surely worth the watch. Not only is it visually pleasing to see those exquisite dishes but it is also a film which keeps you guessing.

It is surely a new take on the horror genre and for me, you can even call this film a Thriller with it's suspense and twist and turns.

I will surely recommend this film to all who love Horrors and Thrillers.

Performance wise, Ralph Fiennes steals the show with his mesmerizing screen presence. He is truly the star of the film.

Nicolas Hault does his best with the role that he is given and doesn't disappoint. Al though somewhere I felt his character wasn't dealt with the arc it was required.

Anya Taylor-Joy is a Bona fide star in the making and with the choices of films and shows that she is doing, she is surely going to the top.

I honestly even liked the Supporting cast and of course amongst them it is John Leguizamo who stands out.

A special shot out to the Cinematographer Peter Deming for all those amazing visuals of the food items shown in the film. It felt like I was actually watching a food channel show and was tempted to try out those amazing items as well!

In conclusion, The Menu is surely worth the watch as it is has an amazing script and earnest performances!

I enjoyed it, but found it wanting something (maybe a dash of salt?). Can't put my finger on it, but basically a lack of depth in the characters. I wanted to know more about these people, but we only got small hints. They were all practically strangers so the steaks (pun intended) were not very high. I'm also getting Anya Taylor-Joy fatigue. She just didn't do it for me in this and I'm seeing some pretense breaking through her acting. Emma and Split were great, but lately I'm not enjoying her performances as much. Maybe saturation? It's one of those movies that asks you to suspend a lot of disbelief and overlook a lot of sketchy plot points and it doesn't quite satisfy in the end. Still a good watch just for Ralph Fiennes. Triangle of Sadness did this idea better. Expand

Great cast but not a great movie! BUT, is still good to watch

Director & the cast are great actors in the Hollywood industry. Sadly, they didn’t deliver a great movie. This movie is about a luxurious dinin exp on a private island where only a private guest that could make a reservation. Various guest backgrounds start from a successful businessman to a washed-up celeb. And the main arc is about the truth if actually they’re deliberately chosen as the guest because of ominous facts.

The main pros, this is so a fancy movie and has a nice theme. I am lovin it! Another thing to love is the great cast which is including rising Hollywood actors, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult. Next thing, a pretty intense movie with a thrilling ambiance for the audience. Also, it is a perfectly very detail-oriented movie. This perfectly describes the work ethic of a chef's life. Lastly, this movie is so short! Less than 2 hrs, easy to fill out a Lil bit of free time.

Sadly, the rushed plot is the biggest mistake. Firstly, still good plot, an abstract plot which is slowly but surely revealed the puzzle. Then, oddly rushed from a slow-paced & quiet ambiance to a very intense pace & thrilling ambiance. This arc is very hard to enjoy. And ofc, if the movie is fulfilled with an odd story arc it will ruin every pro of the movie, rite?

However, even though this movie isn’t so great, but its fulfilled with a great cast. Besides, a perfect explanation of a chef’s life. Lastly, the theme is good and this movie is so quick. These could be a reason to watch. This movie is still good to watch and nothin’ to lose, rite?!

7/10.

An interesting thriller made in 2022. Some people are invited. The invitation was sent by a very fancy restaurant on an island. Guests are brought to the island by boat. The famous chef of the restaurant will present his new dishes.

The movie continued with a good momentum from the beginning to the middle. It was going well until the very last moment. But I think the ending was too simple for a movie like this. Especially the moments of acceptance in other people, not being able to find a place to escape on the big island, not even thinking of attacking with a fork in his hand, dispelled the tension in the film. Yes, there were scenes that would make you smile from time to time. People laughed. There is no such laughter.

While watching the movie, no island is the world, no chief is god etc. Things like that didn't even occur to me. For that reason, I express my gratitude. It was an enjoyable movie to watch to be enjoyed. But the end did not bring that joy to the top.

The plates and presentations are great. But it doesn't appeal to those who live to eat like us. The chief waiter woman also says to those who find it less "less than you expect, more than you deserve"

The thing that misled me was the perception that the chef's saying "don't eat" the food would be a chance for salvation, and that the event would revolve around the food.

There is no sex or nudity in the movie.

And the interesting thing was that I get hungry with the slightest mention of food in movies, but I didn't get hungry in this movie! The chemistry between Nicholas Hoult and De Armas was good, but Hoult is one of those actors who can play two leading characters. In terms of the way of paying for structure of the film and some other main elements, the film is reminiscent of almost forgotten films like Cabin in the woods 2012..... with the difference that the way the structure is paid here is both more cinematic and more developed. And in the end, the film takes form with difficulty and with the technical knowledge.
The actor playing the role of the chef is one of the most suitable actors that I have seen in the last few years that matches his role.... (I think he is more suitable for roles where an ordinary person , almost without feelings is trying to become a leader and in the end it doesn't success... which of course was not the case here!). The seriousness in the performance is sprinkled throughout the film. We can recognize the perfection of the script in the first thirty minutes of the movie. We know how the director has complete control over things from the sense and power that there's in the back of the performances.
The only thing that needs to be added is when the head chef says to one of his subordinates: "Are you hurting your mind, your body, to keep satisfied people you never see?" The purpose of this sentence is sympathy and its meaning at the same time and after that is conveyed indirectly and correctly, but it would have been better if it was conveyed directly in the sentence. And if it was like that, it would be more to my liking. The connection between the three issues of the script, the choice of actors and the way to use the dialogue was not in line with my taste, but because it was executed correctly, I consider it a perfect movie.5/5

Everything from concept to performance to its tightly paced editing, The Menu had it all for me. What impressed me the most about the movie was how it effortlessly balanced multiple genres and subsequent audience expectations. At one moment you're terrified. The next, you're laughing out loud at the absurdity. Finally, you don't know what to feel. I felt the social commentary was obvious as one would expect but I never felt that it was delivered at the expense of the scene's tension or entertainment. Overall, I was really impressed and loved the film. I'm excited to go back and watch it again! Expand

I didn't know what to think of the movie. Aesthetically it is great, acting is also good, the ending is rushed and the characters are ridiculously superficial. Aesthetically it is great, acting is also good, the ending is rushed and the characters are ridiculously superficial. I was intrigued and excited on the first half, then it became meh and the ending is just a waste.

What is the point the movie is trying to make? That chefs are like cult leaders and that the rich and famous are cruel, corrupt and despicable? And they kill what the ones at the bottom love, or pretend to love, doing? And that it is okay for those at the bottom to destroy themselves and those above in a fiery blaze to purify it all?

I don't like this kind of nihilistic message: 0.

Some films think that they are haute cuisine but in fact are nothing more than a (honestly very juicy) cheeseburger.

Distributed by the Walt Disney Company, McKay and Ferrell team up again for an analysis of hierarchical subjugation as in "FMJ" (Kubrick 1987) and of social one as in "The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and the Lover" (Greenaway 1989). We should thank them just for reminding us of the abyss between the glorious season of those auteur dramas and these surrogates always watered down by the subgenres of black comedy and popcorn horror. "It functions like an epicurean salon". "No, I like a sort of biome of culinary ideas better I think".

THE BAD: Did not work for me as a satire. The message is redundant since the beginning and I don't understand many of the things that happen in The Menu. Shallow characters and also didn't care for the dynamics between the protagonists.
