Crazy cool action but this is a big step down from the stellar first film, just not as clever or coherent.

But if you're the kind of person who likes a good story line, with some logic and believability and less smack, bottle and balls then give this a miss. There is no comparison with the first picture, which was unique, cohesive, and almost believable. This picture suffered immeasurably by being caught up in it's own self indulgence. WHile the action sequences are ramped up to a very exciting extent, it lacks the intelligent story arc that made the original stand out, and occasionally slips into self-parody.

It has a very good first act, which is engaging and develops the concepts of the first film in style. Reloaded becomes far less focused and borders on being incoherent as the film progresses. One of the main plot points is the return of Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) and his newfound ability to clone himself since Neo "freed" him. As a plot device, this is as stupid as they come, but Weaving has fun with the concept by valiantly attempting a comic back-and-forth with himself. The rest of the returning cast again turn in good performances, though the development of the romantic relationship between Neo and Trininty (Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss) is unconvincing and surprisingly immature. The action sequences are even more stunning than in the first film, particularly the hugely destructive extended freeway chase that will go down in history as one of the best film set-pieces purely in terms of gloss, complexity and scale. Though this massive visual extravaganza is impressive, my favourite scene in the film is far more understated - early on in the story, upon his arrival to the final surviving human city, Neo and Councillor Hamann (Anthony Zerbe) debate purpose, destiny and free will as the rest of the city sleeps, a simple scene, but an immensely human and emotionally grounded one. An increased reliance on not-so-subtle religious symbolism becomes a little annoying, especially in the film's final act, which in addition to being a bit pretentious is also lazy and dull. The Matrix Reloaded is decent in part, offering thrills and visual amazement, and the odd decent character moment, but an over-long, sometimes boring and often confusing plot, in addition to a lack of effective character development makes this sequel pale in comparison to the first film. It offers just enough new ideas to stand out from the crowd, and is certainly more entertaining and of higher quality than the vast majority of film sequels, but the Matrix Reloaded is certainly not as profound and clever as it thinks it is. It's a good blockbuster then, but not much more, and it unfortunately lead to the shudder-inducing final instalment of the series six months later... Expand

The Matrix deserved a better sequel. It’s not a bad film, but it wasn’t as memorable as the first film. Action was good and the effects were fine, but it’s just not the sequel that I wanted.

It was ok but not near as good as the first one. It was kind of boring at moments, but the action scenes were awesome. The biggest problem was that it took 45 minutes for it to get started.

It's pretty much the Wachowskis' answer to 'Star Wars' (1977)... unlike "Star Wars" however, the sequels that came after George Lucas' legendary sci-fi epic arguably got better and furthered the franchise... 'The Matrix Reloaded' is a sequel that felt like it was only made due to the predecessor's unexpected success.

We see that Neo (Keanu Reeves), is trying to cope with having nightmares about the death of Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), as he believes that his dreams are foreshadowing a future event. His concerns trouble him to focus as he is "The One". Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) also returns and tries to deal with protecting the people of Zion.

Neo discovers more about himself as he unlocks an unexpected truth that leaves him questioning his motivations and what could happen.

'The Matrix Reloaded' is filled with more characters and has more entertaining and exciting action scenes than its predecessor... but the movie is so exposition heavy and there is too much to learn to the point where you're left feeling whether you should care. Morpheus seems a bit bland in this installment as all he does is explain new information in quite a stiff manner... I do not criticize Laurence Fishburne's acting abilities as I believe that the screenplay - also written by the Wachowskis - only allowed Fishburne to showcase as much emotion as he could.

The film, overall, feels bloated and blown out of proportion... it's still an entertaining spectacle... but instead of learning new things about certain characters like in "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) did, there is just padded and filler information that feels unnecessary and only used to make it feel more deep and philosophical.

Entertaining... but just too much.

In the four years since the film's release, its gravity-defying innovations have been borrowed by every action movie looking for secondhand flash, and spoofed by every pop-culture-crazed comedy in need of an easy laugh of recognition. Having picked The Matrix's bones clean, these scavengers have turned Andy and Larry Wachowski's big bag of stylistic tricks into clichés. Consequently, for a Matrix sequel to compete in a post-Matrix world, it has to do more than just reload: It needs to haul out new artillery. On a level of pure spectacle, The Matrix Reloaded does just that. An epic car chase, a pair of ghostly twin assassins, and a fight between Keanu Reeves and an army of cloned Hugo Weavings all push the boundaries of special-effects technology, but as the last two Star Wars films prove, eye-popping visuals mean little if they don't serve a compelling narrative. On that level, Reloaded fails. Where The Matrix used Reeves' Alice-like cyber-hacker as a sturdy entry point into a mind-boggling dystopian computer Wonderland, its sequel lacks a grounding point in reality. Instead, it seems to take its cues from the solemnity and pseudo-mystical mumbo-jumbo of Laurence Fishburne's character, who was saddled with nearly all of the original's creaky expository dialogue. That material is farmed out more democratically in Reloaded, which further chronicles the war between machines and humans and introduces many new characters, almost none of whom make a lasting impression. Then again, the returning cast doesn't excel, either. Reeves' blankness, which was put to effective use in the original, is problematic here, and his relationship with Carrie-Anne Moss, which gave the original a dose of bracing friction, has devolved into a standard-issue love affair. In making The Matrix's leaden answer to The Phantom Menace, the Wachowski brothers seem to be afflicted with George Lucas Syndrome: They're so enthralled by the convoluted mythology of their own private universe that they've lost touch with its human core. The characters, action, fights, style and visuals are excellent. However the story is not as good as before, has some lengths, a cliffhanger ending and the answers to some question are weakening the experience. Over the years I often read that the Wachowskis brothers were surprised by the success of the Matrix and had no plan for a sequel at hand. Because by Hollywood rules a sequel must be made if a movie is successful they had no choice but to do it anyway. For clarification: The Matrix did an amazing job in explaining things but also keep up mysteries for certain things for you to fill. This works well and makes a medium more immersive and enjoyable. However it is also a trap for the writers as you have to deliver satisfying answers. Negative examples were the conclusion for Lost or the X-Files in TV or the ending of Mass Effect 3 or Samus Arans more flashed out character in Metroid Other M (The later is viewed as character assassination by fans). In short Matrix Reloaded explained more but the extensions to the lore and world are not satisfying enough (Some can be viewed as deconstruction). Also in hindsight there is a lot in the plot that has not that much purpose. Story: Shortly after the events of the prequel Neo struggles with his newfound powers and purpose as chosen one / savior of mankind. Meanwhile the machines have located the city of Zion where the human resistance live. It is only a matter of time before a devastating attack starts. Neo starts an odyssey inside the Matrix to find a way to stop the attack while another threat thought to be eliminated rises to stop him. On paper it sounds amazing and parts of it truly are. Sadly there is skipable material in the movie too or lets say it has it lengths. The cliffhanger ending is no surprise as it was know that they filmed 2 movies at once. It is however still a disappointment. The characters again deliver a great performance with Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie Anne Moss as Trinity and Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. These 3 resume their roles and again are as awesome as stylish. The antagonist I wont spoil is equally great. Far more menacing than Agent Smith from the prequel ;-). I also like the Merowinger played by Lambert Wilson, the twins played by Adrian / Neil Rayment and the Keymaker played by Randall Duk Kim. However I ask myself what they actually deliver except for extending the movie and adding some not that important challenges (Who have awesome fights nd scenes to be fair). The rest of the cast is fine and the overall performance is quite good. Visually they kept the unique style and impressive effects. Nothing to criticize here. The action and fight scenes are amazing and a strength of the movie. Without these far more people would have complained. Overall it could not redo the experience that was the Matrix. It is a weaker sequel and did not win me over. It is the set up for the final movie. Bonus knowledge: There is an interesting fan theory about the Matrix that makes strangely far more sense that the sequel movies story. The real world is fake too and the human resistance is still trapped inside the Matrix. It is just another layer and safety measure. The machines knew that not all humans could be convinced that the Matrix is the real life / reality. For those they created the real world simulation to give them something they wont doubt. It is logical, feasible and explains how Neo can do some stuff at the end of the movie that he should not be able to do even as chosen one (I am vague to avoid spoilers). Expand

I decided to review this one before the original film seeing as I don't really have much to say about the original, I just think it is a clever film and a great watch. However, I have plenty to say about the story arc in the next two instalments - Reloaded and Revolutions.
Unlike the first film, this film focuses on the action rather than the story. The first film took time to give each aspect the attention it deserved and did it well, however this one doesn't seem as bothered about the story. The story itself is quite confusing and rather underwhelming, I got quite confused as to what was going on at times. The pacing is also quite bad at the start of the movie, taking ages to get into the actual story and just showing us stuff we don't really care about.
Even though I don't like the fact that this movie prefers the action over the story, thankfully the action for the most part is great. The highway chase scene is a highlight and I loved every second of it- easily the best scene of the entire film. The way the events flowed and the way it was shot was great. Many of the other action scenes were pretty decent too, however there were some times where it didn't work as well like the Neo vs God knows how many Agent Smiths. The way the scene was shot was good and the way it flowed was also good but it was obvious that most of it was CGI and the scene seemed quite stupid at the end of the day.
The ending is awful and ends completely out of the blue and feels extremely rushed with its unnecessary cliffhanger which tells you that this film was only made to set up The Matrix Revolutions, hence why they were released only six months apart. It basically says that this film was a two hour advert for Revolutions. In fact, after the credits there's actually a trailer for the next movie. So much for subtlety.
With this film, I feel almost exactly how I feel with X-Men: The Last Stand; it's not a good movie, it's not a bad movie either, but it takes a huge dump on the franchise.
It may seem like I bashed on this movie lots but I think it's alright at best. It certainly does have great action but the story is rather underwhelming and confusing and the ending is annoying. If you just want a dumb action movie then I would recommend this, however if you want a film as interesting and clever as the first then there's probably not much point watching this.
6.5/10
Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks it's stupid that Neo can fly.

After a movie as inspired and as original as "The Matrix", the minimum expected was something equivalent, especially given that we have back the entire original team, including the directors, who also sign the script.

What we have in this film is the beginning of the ultimate conflict between machines and human beings. The film continues to bet on the style created earlier, and it continues to look cool, and trying to keep it up most of the time. The fight scenes have become even more impressive and stylized. The special effects are fantastic, all the actors' work is good despite being as impersonal and cold as in the first film. The actors do the best they can, but they don't always achieve the brilliance of the first film. There's just something missing. In addition, the film has moments that shouldn't be there: the sex scene was expendable, and I hated that kind of rave, with little clothes and more like the beginning of a gigantic orgy. Yes, in fact they are about to start a gigantic battle that decides whether everyone lives or dies ... and what they want to do is to be semi-naked and rub their bodies together, to the sound of an electronic beat. There's logic! So much logic as the strange and inexplicable ability acquired by the villainous agent to copy himself to exhaustion.

The film maintains the good production values of its predecessor, but is much weaker in script and storytelling. This ultimately harms it greatly.

Though it promised to take the franchise to new heights, it ultimately fell short, delivering a flashy, over-the-top spectacle with little substance. The chemistry between the main actors is still present, but they are overshadowed by the bloated cast of new characters, with Monica Bellucci's Persephone being the standout. The film is filled with gratuitous action sequences and unoriginal plot points, failing to live up to the high expectations set by the first film. While it may be better than its equally disappointing counterpart, "The Matrix Revolutions," it falls far short of the brilliance of the original.
