Not as good compared to the first. Still, this sequel remains sophisticated, intense and complex.

The Wachoskis build off their landmark sci-fi film with near stride in "The Matrix Reloaded," churning out invigorating set pieces and striking imagery to offset a narrative that could certainly benefit from the KISS principle.

We see Neo (Keanu Reeves) now taking full advantage of his "One" status, he has a new wardrobe, a more relaxed attitude and he can fly. He is joined again by the increasingly philosophical Morpheus Laurence Fishburne) and the lovely Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), the woman Neo falls for in the first film. This time around we have a glimpse of Zion, the last human city in the real world, a place mentioned several times in the original. The city is on the bring of an attack from the machines that many believe Neo can prevent. But there to get in his way is the rebooted and rejuvenated Smith, played with an undoubtedly charismatic and comedic undertone by Hugo Weaving. He is stronger, faster and can multiply in vast numbers, something Neo meets head on in one of the films most spectacular fight sequences, where Neo is facing countless amounts of Smiths at the one time, this fast, choreographed piece is one of the defining points of the film.
So the big question remains, is it any good? Well much like that question, there are various moments in the film where questions are asked, perhaps rhetorical or not, but many times these questions are unanswered, or answered with another question, it's quite a circle and one that we must get used to, there are plenty of psychological puzzles and open-ended dialogue to keep people guessing for years what exactly was meant by this or that. In terms of explanations, we get a much deeper understanding of The Matrix, it's creation and its purpose, but this can often feel forced and too explanatory, computer program this, computer program that. The first film, we barely got an explanation, we were left in awe at the scope of the film and the subject matter, but a bigger budget for 'Reloaded' means a more action-oriented film, we still get some brain teasers, but a more human element and certainly pre bells and whistles take away that unique spark that's de the first so damn enjoyable. Mentioning the set pieces again, there are certainly some eye-catching and spectacular moments, a moving truck where we see Morpheus fighting an Agent was particularly enjoyable, with plenty of time spared for this breathtaking scene.
But in light of these impressive feats, they seem to act as a distraction to a disengaging story, one that takes a more Hollywood approach as a bigger budget was available. These folks are now entering superhero territory which lacks the originality that was introduced in the original.
Also making an appearance in the sequel is a vast amount of new characters, mostly from other ships headed to Zion, but they sort of get lost in the midst of everything that is going on in the bigger picture, left with little to do except stick on some cool sunglasses and an say a few witty lines.
It certainly wasn't the sequel I was hoping for, it made everything too explainable and fluid, but while there is a few questions still to be answered, the cliffhanger ending was a little off the mark, not matching it's predecessor in unique storytelling or thrill, but definitely an action film worth watching.

It has a very good first act, which is engaging and develops the concepts of the first film in style. Reloaded becomes far less focused and borders on being incoherent as the film progresses. One of the main plot points is the return of Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) and his newfound ability to clone himself since Neo "freed" him. As a plot device, this is as stupid as they come, but Weaving has fun with the concept by valiantly attempting a comic back-and-forth with himself. The rest of the returning cast again turn in good performances, though the development of the romantic relationship between Neo and Trininty (Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss) is unconvincing and surprisingly immature. The action sequences are even more stunning than in the first film, particularly the hugely destructive extended freeway chase that will go down in history as one of the best film set-pieces purely in terms of gloss, complexity and scale. Though this massive visual extravaganza is impressive, my favourite scene in the film is far more understated - early on in the story, upon his arrival to the final surviving human city, Neo and Councillor Hamann (Anthony Zerbe) debate purpose, destiny and free will as the rest of the city sleeps, a simple scene, but an immensely human and emotionally grounded one. An increased reliance on not-so-subtle religious symbolism becomes a little annoying, especially in the film's final act, which in addition to being a bit pretentious is also lazy and dull. The Matrix Reloaded is decent in part, offering thrills and visual amazement, and the odd decent character moment, but an over-long, sometimes boring and often confusing plot, in addition to a lack of effective character development makes this sequel pale in comparison to the first film. It offers just enough new ideas to stand out from the crowd, and is certainly more entertaining and of higher quality than the vast majority of film sequels, but the Matrix Reloaded is certainly not as profound and clever as it thinks it is. It's a good blockbuster then, but not much more, and it unfortunately lead to the shudder-inducing final instalment of the series six months later... Expand

I remember the first time I saw reloaded being somewhat taken aback by the fact that neo wasnt quite as powerful as I was led to believe by the initial Matrix one prophecy. And yet, in the many times I have watched this film since 2003 my puny human mind has absorbed more of the little details that make up reloaded, animatrix, enter the matrix and revolutions and I now feel Reloaded really gives you that 'high' that the human rebellion are in force and ready to take on the agents for a change. A fantastic second act for the trilogy. The incredible freeway sequence alone is worth the original ticket price! Seminal action photography elevates what could otherwise have been a far more mediocre outing. Expand

I looked forward to this movie (as did most Matrix fans) for sooo long, only to be soooooo disappointed. I was such a HUGE fan of the FIRST Matrix that I bought the DVD and probably watched it a dozen times. I read some reviews in the papers of Reloaded, and all of them seemed to give it high marks, so lets just say I was very excited to go see it Friday night. What a catastrophic let down. This movie should have been re-EDITTED, and re-WRITTEN before it hit the streets. HOW on EARTH could they have released it in its current form ?!!! This movie was long....waaayyyyy too long. Many scenes could have been trimmed or better yet, removed. The movie's beginning third was so long and boring that my friend and I kept looking at each other in amazement that the movie had been on for so long and STILL seemed to not have even started yet ! The dance/orgy scene and the quasi-sex scene was just plain out of place. It reminded me of those old 10 Commandments "style" movies where they tried to depict the sodom and gommorah sinners ....ahh.....who cares, you get it (I hope). I mean come on...Zion looked like crap...who would even WANT to live if they had to live there ?!!! That whole thing should have been just removed. At some point in the film you start to think that the movie is just one long fight scene, in a perpetual loop that you cannot escape from. All the fighting is redundant and brings life to the "been there, done that" statement. Don't get me wrong, the special effects and fighting were pretty cool, but don't keep repeating the same stuff all the way throughout the movie !!! Also, as one reviewer here has pointed out, at the end of the FIRST film, Neo was actually RE-WRITING the matrix. Now, to ME that means he can do whatever he wants, re-write the code for EVERYTHING and be basically invinceable, RIGHT ??!!! Nope, not according to this crappy sequel. If you were so powerful now, and could do anything at all, why would you even waste time "punching and kicking" computer enemies when you could just kill them in an instant ?!!! What was even more funny was when Neo was fighting all of that french guy's henchmen on the staircase....he gets cut by a weapon ! Now, how is it that Neo can defeat an AGENT, but has trouble with the "normal-guy" matrix bad guys ?!! Ohhhhh, man I am on a rant here, but its just sooo stupid. How anyone can give this movie a high score is beyond me. Maybe the simple minded among us are easily amused I guess. Well, its much too late to stop Reloaded now that it has entered the theatres...its out there, sucking badly, and will no doubt still make money from those who are just curious about the hype, or true fans of the first film who have to see it just because they are a fan....horrible sequel or not. My opinion upon leaving the theatre was that they could have (probably) done a LOT of editting to shorten this film, and then ADDED the 3rd part to it, to make ONE half-decent sequel. Unfortunately we will have to wait until the 3rd installment to see if number 3 can make up for the failings of (approppriately numbered) "number TWO". And, as I mentioned earlier...I OWN the DVD of the first Matrix, but I can guarantee you that I will NOT waste my money on the second. The creators of Reloaded should be ashamed of themselves. Period. Expand

Sorry if I let all of you down everyone, but I didn't like it like I liked the first one. I know this is the middle of the trilogy, and middles of trilogies tend to be a bit weak, but how is that supposed to make you like it? Yes, there Sorry if I let all of you down everyone, but I didn't like it like I liked the first one. I know this is the middle of the trilogy, and middles of trilogies tend to be a bit weak, but how is that supposed to make you like it? Yes, there was much meaningful philosophy, but it didn't seem to make me look at the world differently. The plot is well-written, but it seemed many of the situations abused it and made the film look weaker. The dead acting wasn't there for a reason. The all-powerful characters were cool, but not ones I cared about. Neo is basically like Superman; he can fly and do supernatural things, but also like Superman, there's really nothing that can kill him (unless in Revolutions if we find out there is one thing that CAN kill him, and I'd like to see that). But really, liking or hating Reloaded is really a matter of opinion. You can't force someone into liking or hating it, that's dumb and abusive. And I'm not one of those super-idiots who says "It's for geeks only", because that's not true, and I myself am a geek. But there were so many things I didn't like about Reloaded (the corny dance and sex scenes, the action scenes that had no purpose [I'm not talking about the car chase scene or the Neo vs. the 100 Smiths scene], dead acting from the heroes of the movie, too many cold settings, and other things) that no one here in Metacritic really had a good explanation for, that I just didn't enjoy it. OK, throw your insults at me. (Dan. B, if you respect opinions so much then leave the ones who didn't enjoy this movie alone! Most of the reasons were given out by opinion, which has nothing to do with how smart you are. For crying out loud, this isn't Lord of the Rings!) Expand

My least favorite of the three movies. What a shame the sequels sputtered out or this Trilogy could have been the most epic in the history of film making. Could have been our generation's STAR WARS. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda.

The first film was equivalent to the pilotContrary to everything we know about trilogies, the sequel to the Matrix is considered to be the best of the three films. The reason is simple, as this is where we get into the heart of the story. The first film was equivalent to the pilot episode of a TV show, where we are introduced to the characters, terms, and locations. In the second installment of the Matrix we are introduced to the real struggle and get a look inside the legendary underground city of Zion. The humans there have learned of a plan by the machines to tunnel through into the city and want to come up with a way to stop them. While Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) believes that Neo (Keanu Reeves) is the key to stopping the whole thing, most of the other are skeptical. In Reloaded, Agent Smith doesn't play as large a role as in the first film, for that matter, neither does the Matrix itself, which makes it almost like a stand alone rather than a sequel. Reloaded isn't just a great Sci-Fi story as it features one of the best action sequences and chase scenes I have ever seen, following the groups interaction with the Merovingian. While the film was great and does top the original, the Directors once again tried to use never before seen special effects. While it worked well in the first film, it doesn't help the second. Many of the fight scenes with the agents become so computerized, that at points they actually seem to be animated, and those scenes hurt the film. Other than that minor inconvenience, I can't find anything wrong with this film. It is Science Fiction at it's best, featuring an perfectly cast group of actors, some edge of your seat intensity, and of course a very unique story. All that makes the Matrix Reloaded one of our must see movies! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, I admit after seeing this in the theater the first time I walked out of the theater at the end with mixed opinions. I basically told everyone I wasn't sure if I liked it I'd have to see how they end it in the third movie. But after seeing the final part and then watching the entire movie trinity in order a second time later this and the last one have grown on me. The entire trinity is imo pure genius and has a profound philosophical/spiritual message but it is not obvious what this is. The second and the third movie are especially difficult to understand. Let me just speculate, if we look at Hindu cosmology (from which Buddhism also later arose) then possibly The Architect, Merovingian Frenchman and The Oracle represent the Hindu God Trinity: The Architect = Brahman the Creator, The Merovingian = Vishnu the Preserver (since he likes to preserve things from former Incarnation of the Matrix and The Oracle is Shiva the Destroyer (because she wants to destroy the old ways and bring about the new way of peace and she's also constantly smoking cigarettes which is a self-destructive habit). But that's just my opinion, feel free to interpret the trilogy however you want. This movie basically breaks down many assumptions we have about the matrix we gained in the first movie. The part where Neo is able to stop the machines in the real world is really confusing to the viewers too. How he does this is never clearly answered even in the third movie. Three possible theories I have are: 1) Zion and the outside world are just another layer of reality inside the matrix created to fool the people who escape the inner layer of the Matrix that they are free. 2) Neo is actually a machine himself (or possibly the cookie the oracle gave him lets him carry a machine program somehow, after all in computer lingo a "cookie" is a small piece of data you give to a user visiting your website so you can track them), 3) Neo has achieved enlightenment inside the matrix but a side-effect is that he's also achieved enlightenment in the real world, in Buddhism for example it is said there are high-level monks that can bend reality melting snow with their minds and/or make thing materialize out of thin air, etc.. It's possibly Neo's enlightenment lets him do something similar in the real world. Any of these explanations work but we never really know what the creators of these movies really intended since they have stated they would rather let us figure out things for ourselves. Other than being confusing for the viewer one other part I didn't like was the love-making scene between Neo and Trinity, the reason is the way it broke out into the cheesy Rave/techno style music. This should have been some Enya/Tantric spiritual style music imo, the rave music just made it really cheesy. The fight scene with Neo and the multiple Smiths went on way too long too. But overall this was a great movie. I give the entire trinity 10/10 but this movie I give a 9/10. Expand

I must have popped this one in badly wanting entertainment (why is 'Men in Black' supposed to be as funny as they say it is? Seriously, why?), but I watched it thinking, Maybe this won't be a clunker.

Much to my pleasant surprise, it was not a clunker. It was really very good, though of course not as good as the original.

The only place 'Reloaded' really improves on the original 'Matrix' is in the action sequences, which are bigger and better. The story, however, is a bit less well-written than the first one's, and while it was interesting to see the real-world side of the fight against the machines, so to speak, the point where they introduce the Merovingian just plain shuts down the whole plot. For what it's worth, though, I do actually think the Architect scene made up for it. (Maybe that's just because I like the occasional burst of $20 dialogue, which I can understand just fine, and if you can't, that is YOUR problem!)

It's pretty much the Wachowskis' answer to 'Star Wars' (1977)... unlike "Star Wars" however, the sequels that came after George Lucas' legendary sci-fi epic arguably got better and furthered the franchise... 'The Matrix Reloaded' is a sequel that felt like it was only made due to the predecessor's unexpected success.

We see that Neo (Keanu Reeves), is trying to cope with having nightmares about the death of Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), as he believes that his dreams are foreshadowing a future event. His concerns trouble him to focus as he is "The One". Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) also returns and tries to deal with protecting the people of Zion.

Neo discovers more about himself as he unlocks an unexpected truth that leaves him questioning his motivations and what could happen.

'The Matrix Reloaded' is filled with more characters and has more entertaining and exciting action scenes than its predecessor... but the movie is so exposition heavy and there is too much to learn to the point where you're left feeling whether you should care. Morpheus seems a bit bland in this installment as all he does is explain new information in quite a stiff manner... I do not criticize Laurence Fishburne's acting abilities as I believe that the screenplay - also written by the Wachowskis - only allowed Fishburne to showcase as much emotion as he could.

The film, overall, feels bloated and blown out of proportion... it's still an entertaining spectacle... but instead of learning new things about certain characters like in "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) did, there is just padded and filler information that feels unnecessary and only used to make it feel more deep and philosophical.

Entertaining... but just too much.

In the four years since the film's release, its gravity-defying innovations have been borrowed by every action movie looking for secondhand flash, and spoofed by every pop-culture-crazed comedy in need of an easy laugh of recognition. Having picked The Matrix's bones clean, these scavengers have turned Andy and Larry Wachowski's big bag of stylistic tricks into clichés. Consequently, for a Matrix sequel to compete in a post-Matrix world, it has to do more than just reload: It needs to haul out new artillery. On a level of pure spectacle, The Matrix Reloaded does just that. An epic car chase, a pair of ghostly twin assassins, and a fight between Keanu Reeves and an army of cloned Hugo Weavings all push the boundaries of special-effects technology, but as the last two Star Wars films prove, eye-popping visuals mean little if they don't serve a compelling narrative. On that level, Reloaded fails. Where The Matrix used Reeves' Alice-like cyber-hacker as a sturdy entry point into a mind-boggling dystopian computer Wonderland, its sequel lacks a grounding point in reality. Instead, it seems to take its cues from the solemnity and pseudo-mystical mumbo-jumbo of Laurence Fishburne's character, who was saddled with nearly all of the original's creaky expository dialogue. That material is farmed out more democratically in Reloaded, which further chronicles the war between machines and humans and introduces many new characters, almost none of whom make a lasting impression. Then again, the returning cast doesn't excel, either. Reeves' blankness, which was put to effective use in the original, is problematic here, and his relationship with Carrie-Anne Moss, which gave the original a dose of bracing friction, has devolved into a standard-issue love affair. In making The Matrix's leaden answer to The Phantom Menace, the Wachowski brothers seem to be afflicted with George Lucas Syndrome: They're so enthralled by the convoluted mythology of their own private universe that they've lost touch with its human core. As Neo himself said: Upgrade!

Neo has now a lot more powers and special abilities, he can even fly like Superman.

This movie has a lot of nice action and a lot more people are now involved in the story. This is not necessarily better, especially Jade Pinkett Smith and others seem like they only side-track the story. The Wachowski Brothers must have thought It's a good way to open possibilities for a spin-off series or video games.

The whole Zion situation feels like it's just slowing down the story. And why is everyone dancing like they are some ancient tribe members who smoked too much pot?

Monica Bellucci looks amazing and it's fun to see how she plays with the feelings of Neo and Trinity.

There are some interesting new enemies and Hugo Weaving as agent Smith is a cool character. Keanu Reeves does a nice job again portraying Neo, but in the first movie he felt more relatable because he was more human. In this movie Neo and Morpheus look like a rock that can't feel any pain.

Most of the fights are well choreographed but the fight between Neo and all the agent Smith clones was clearly CGI, it feels like you're watching a cutscene in a video game.

The movie sometimes feels to heavy with all its serious messages and riddles. There's something like taking one self too serious.

But all in all this is a nice action movie. The big chase scene on the highway is very nice indeed. If they had made it a bit shorter and less heavy, I would probably have rated the movie a bit higher.

Pat C. makes a good point. There's a lot of stuff going on, what in the Big Lebowski was called "a lot of threads in ol' Duder's head". And an awful lot of talking. Very. Portentous. And meaningful. Talking. Your enjoyment of the film pretty much hinges on your threshold for this sort of thing. Oh, and a complete lack of snobbery - because this isn't brain food. It just dresses the same way. Mind you, those with a predeliction toward nose-turning will have done so for the original and therefore wouldn't have come back, so we're safe. Jim A. basically hit the nail when he said that this is a movie for sitting there and watching rather than thinking about - and sometimes, I think, it demonstrates that it knows it. There are a fair few post-modern elements [*sound of readers screaming and scrolling away*] in the movie, such as Persephone talking about her husband and echoing the thoughts of everyone who's just sat through that first scene with him. Or the opening, one of the most post-modern [*more screams, faint sound of horses whinnying*] openings to a major movie in a while - because it's essentially the same as the first one...that is, until spoiler deleted. But never mind about post-modernism [*screams, whinnying*], the real reason anyone'll see this film is the Heart-Stopping, Head-Pounding Action Sequences!?. And by golly with a side order of gosh, but they're great. Too many of them too close to each other, for my money, but great nonetheless. The acting? It's good. Yes, even Keanu Reeves. He can do miserable and intense. Carrie-Ann Moss still doesn't do enough, but what she does she does well. Laurence Fishburne pulls off the neat trick of not making Morpheus seem like the biggest wanker that ever walked the Earth, Weaving Hugo (who, presumably because of LOTR, isn't in it as much) is still gold - that voice is just genius. Be advised: that's it as far as returning characters are concerned. Even those few who didn't die in the first film are nowhere to be seen here. Still, that's a blessing because the cast is huge enough as it is - and still, they're all good. Jada Pinkett Fresh Prince flits between charismatic and enigmatic without batting an eyelid, Harold Perrineau does his customary "worried yet pretending to be in control" job admirably, and Monica Belucci, well, she's wearing an interesting outfit there. Oh, and she gives a nicely seductive-yet-faintly-untrustworthy performance too. Oh, and good performances from the Rayment twins as well (except when they talk). I point it out because I still can't believe they went from being handymen on a British daytime DIY makeover show alongside Carol Vorderman, to the Matrix sequels. No kidding, that's where the brothers found them. Carol Vorderman to the Wachowski brothers. Incredible. Just occured to me, the Americans don't even know who Carol Vorderman is. So I've just wasted my time and yours. Sorry. Anyway, the film. There are problems, else I'd have given it 10: it's all a little...I don't know, bloated at times. So much stuff happens in the first twenty minutes I actually started to panic. Too much, too quickly. And it also suffers from Middle Child syndrome, just like The Two Towers, or Critters 3: it doesn't tell its own story so much as set up stuff for Revolutions, and so it sometimes feels vaguely unsatisfactory. Something of a cop-out toward the end as well. But then the real ending happens, and stuff is sort-of revealed that will set your head a-spinning. Then "To Be Concluded" and aw, nuts. Roll on Revolutions. Seriously. Recommended, with some caveats: 1) see the first film first, and 2) don't watch it if you think these kind of films are stupidbrainlesssick and wrongfor kids. They're not, but there'll be no telling you that. Expand

The characters, action, fights, style and visuals are excellent. However the story is not as good as before, has some lengths, a cliffhanger ending and the answers to some question are weakening the experience. Over the years I often read that the Wachowskis brothers were surprised by the success of the Matrix and had no plan for a sequel at hand. Because by Hollywood rules a sequel must be made if a movie is successful they had no choice but to do it anyway. For clarification: The Matrix did an amazing job in explaining things but also keep up mysteries for certain things for you to fill. This works well and makes a medium more immersive and enjoyable. However it is also a trap for the writers as you have to deliver satisfying answers. Negative examples were the conclusion for Lost or the X-Files in TV or the ending of Mass Effect 3 or Samus Arans more flashed out character in Metroid Other M (The later is viewed as character assassination by fans). In short Matrix Reloaded explained more but the extensions to the lore and world are not satisfying enough (Some can be viewed as deconstruction). Also in hindsight there is a lot in the plot that has not that much purpose. Story: Shortly after the events of the prequel Neo struggles with his newfound powers and purpose as chosen one / savior of mankind. Meanwhile the machines have located the city of Zion where the human resistance live. It is only a matter of time before a devastating attack starts. Neo starts an odyssey inside the Matrix to find a way to stop the attack while another threat thought to be eliminated rises to stop him. On paper it sounds amazing and parts of it truly are. Sadly there is skipable material in the movie too or lets say it has it lengths. The cliffhanger ending is no surprise as it was know that they filmed 2 movies at once. It is however still a disappointment. The characters again deliver a great performance with Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie Anne Moss as Trinity and Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. These 3 resume their roles and again are as awesome as stylish. The antagonist I wont spoil is equally great. Far more menacing than Agent Smith from the prequel ;-). I also like the Merowinger played by Lambert Wilson, the twins played by Adrian / Neil Rayment and the Keymaker played by Randall Duk Kim. However I ask myself what they actually deliver except for extending the movie and adding some not that important challenges (Who have awesome fights nd scenes to be fair). The rest of the cast is fine and the overall performance is quite good. Visually they kept the unique style and impressive effects. Nothing to criticize here. The action and fight scenes are amazing and a strength of the movie. Without these far more people would have complained. Overall it could not redo the experience that was the Matrix. It is a weaker sequel and did not win me over. It is the set up for the final movie. Bonus knowledge: There is an interesting fan theory about the Matrix that makes strangely far more sense that the sequel movies story. The real world is fake too and the human resistance is still trapped inside the Matrix. It is just another layer and safety measure. The machines knew that not all humans could be convinced that the Matrix is the real life / reality. For those they created the real world simulation to give them something they wont doubt. It is logical, feasible and explains how Neo can do some stuff at the end of the movie that he should not be able to do even as chosen one (I am vague to avoid spoilers). Expand

Despite all that, I still liked the movie, but it could have been a classic.

I decided to review this one before the original film seeing as I don't really have much to say about the original, I just think it is a clever film and a great watch. However, I have plenty to say about the story arc in the next two instalments - Reloaded and Revolutions.
Unlike the first film, this film focuses on the action rather than the story. The first film took time to give each aspect the attention it deserved and did it well, however this one doesn't seem as bothered about the story. The story itself is quite confusing and rather underwhelming, I got quite confused as to what was going on at times. The pacing is also quite bad at the start of the movie, taking ages to get into the actual story and just showing us stuff we don't really care about.
Even though I don't like the fact that this movie prefers the action over the story, thankfully the action for the most part is great. The highway chase scene is a highlight and I loved every second of it- easily the best scene of the entire film. The way the events flowed and the way it was shot was great. Many of the other action scenes were pretty decent too, however there were some times where it didn't work as well like the Neo vs God knows how many Agent Smiths. The way the scene was shot was good and the way it flowed was also good but it was obvious that most of it was CGI and the scene seemed quite stupid at the end of the day.
The ending is awful and ends completely out of the blue and feels extremely rushed with its unnecessary cliffhanger which tells you that this film was only made to set up The Matrix Revolutions, hence why they were released only six months apart. It basically says that this film was a two hour advert for Revolutions. In fact, after the credits there's actually a trailer for the next movie. So much for subtlety.
With this film, I feel almost exactly how I feel with X-Men: The Last Stand; it's not a good movie, it's not a bad movie either, but it takes a huge dump on the franchise.
It may seem like I bashed on this movie lots but I think it's alright at best. It certainly does have great action but the story is rather underwhelming and confusing and the ending is annoying. If you just want a dumb action movie then I would recommend this, however if you want a film as interesting and clever as the first then there's probably not much point watching this.
6.5/10
Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks it's stupid that Neo can fly.

Not a patch on the first movie. They went for the bigger is better concept and failed. Fun sci-fi action flick, but nothing special.

After a movie as inspired and as original as "The Matrix", the minimum expected was something equivalent, especially given that we have back the entire original team, including the directors, who also sign the script.

What we have in this film is the beginning of the ultimate conflict between machines and human beings. The film continues to bet on the style created earlier, and it continues to look cool, and trying to keep it up most of the time. The fight scenes have become even more impressive and stylized. The special effects are fantastic, all the actors' work is good despite being as impersonal and cold as in the first film. The actors do the best they can, but they don't always achieve the brilliance of the first film. There's just something missing. In addition, the film has moments that shouldn't be there: the sex scene was expendable, and I hated that kind of rave, with little clothes and more like the beginning of a gigantic orgy. Yes, in fact they are about to start a gigantic battle that decides whether everyone lives or dies ... and what they want to do is to be semi-naked and rub their bodies together, to the sound of an electronic beat. There's logic! So much logic as the strange and inexplicable ability acquired by the villainous agent to copy himself to exhaustion.

The film maintains the good production values of its predecessor, but is much weaker in script and storytelling. This ultimately harms it greatly.

The Matrix is one of my favorite movies and while this sequel was good, it was no where as great as the first. More money doesn't always equal a better movie. Still, great continuation of the original and should be seen for The matrix enthusiasts.

Great follow up to the now classic original. Yes parts are silly like most action films but this an acquired taste and will divide no doubt.

It's still a great action movie, with a story taht kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat the entire time. The world is expanded, stuff like the keymaker or Agent Smith get a lot more attention.
Compared to the first Matrix movie, this one is definitely worse, but looked at on its own, it's a very good Sci-Fi / Action movie with fight scenes you definitely don't see that often, especially in modern mainstream movies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film definitely falls behind on it's predecessor but don't think it's a bad film The Matrix Reloaded has some amazing action sequences, the burly brawl, chateau fight, the 20 minute car chase, but it also has really slow psychology talk that makes the film go from action to exposition every 5 minutes which slows the plot down with The Merovingian talking about causality, The Architect talking about the Matrix with. 10 to 20 letter words really slows it down and messes with the pacing. Zion is a bit of a time consumer and the cave rave is awkward and uncomfortable but after that the film starts up. But other than that The Matrix Reloaded is a great time. Expand

Though it promised to take the franchise to new heights, it ultimately fell short, delivering a flashy, over-the-top spectacle with little substance. The chemistry between the main actors is still present, but they are overshadowed by the bloated cast of new characters, with Monica Bellucci's Persephone being the standout. The film is filled with gratuitous action sequences and unoriginal plot points, failing to live up to the high expectations set by the first film. While it may be better than its equally disappointing counterpart, "The Matrix Revolutions," it falls far short of the brilliance of the original.
