The modern era has been replaced by the past and this change was, dare I say, bold. Not everyone, in my opinion, can swallow the fact that we are suddenly no longer in a modern setting with all the trappings of the past, but in the past without the Kingsman toys. Compared to the previous films, this installment is simply different and I believe it will find both its enthusiasts and haters. I was satisfied, even though I was apprehensive at first. The opening was a blast, but then there were moments that I didn't enjoy and I thought it was probably going to be a dud. Luckily it wasn't and it didn't take long and after Rasputin came on the scene, who by the way was the best character of the whole film for me, it grabbed me and didn't let go until the very end. That was great by the way and explained the origin of the series beautifully, but I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. Classically, the action didn't disappoint, which is simply superbly filmed in this series, and it's no different here. It's maybe a little weaker, but that's because as I mentioned, story-wise we're a few years ahead of the previous installments so the real nuts and bolts of the Kingsman outfit isn't here yet. Despite that, the action here is again beautifully executed, especially in one passage that I devoured and thought I wasn't even watching the Kingsman series but a proper war movie. As I mentioned before. The third installment is just different. What also changed a bit was the humor. It's there again and it's cool again, but I felt like it was in smaller doses and what definitely makes the third installment different is the overall seriousness. There are some emotional moments that may have been in the previous volumes, but they didn't take me nearly as much as they did here. The war passages had something going for them and were, for me, the best part of the entire film. To sum up. The new Kingsman went about it a little differently. He changed the time period, the characters and it changed the whole feel of the franchise. But for me, he did it right, and although I would have loved to see a modern Kingsman with Eggsy again, this was a nice change and for me, it was a good one. The only minus for me remains that the Kalinka song that was heard in the trailer wasn't in the film. For me, a good film that I recommend. Expand

Coming from the first which is a fun popcorn movie to a second the upped the ridiculousness to a point that should have killed off this "franchise". This third installment is abysmal to say the least. It's a well shot movie and the backdrops are all top notch. But the acting, direction, and plot/lines to say are hysterically bad. Almost flirts with "it's so bad it's good". At a certain point the only thing I can convey is "Avoid the time sink" do anything else. It will end up as better time spent. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't able to watch no more then 40 minutes. Boring and the political/historical stuff was so badly explained. The youtube documentaries on Napoleon with little flags on a map, was more exiting. Killing a character at the beginning with barely any attachment (story wise) was a very bad start for a movie. I give it 40% for the 40 minutes. Expand

My first insufficiency to the saga, inevitable when the film is an uninterrupted mash-up of characters and scenes already seen that block you to think about the continuous feeling of déjà vu. Ralph Fiennes? The most recent episodes of "007". His son Conrad in the Great War? George MacKay in "1917" (Mendes 2019). Rasputin? "Hellboy" (del Toro 2004). The duels between swordsmen? The swashbuckling movies. Daniel Brühl? MCU's Helmut Zemo ("Captain America: Civil War", Anthony and Joe Russo 2016). The Scottish villain? Sean Connery. His death? At your choosing: Alan Rickman in "Die Hard" (McTiernan 1988), Koba in "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" (Matt Reeves 2014), etc.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its a mess, The other 2 movies were peak classy action filled awesome movies this had action and style same as them it was clean and classy with awesome camera work love all the fights but comparred to those installements it was a dissapointment,The action was the only thing felt entertaining in it the rest feels dull filler,The story was amazing but the execution is mess with it the pacing was bad and the whole drama and war felt unintresting, The visuals were spectacular and the music was good, The camera movements and setting of war period was great, The origin moment of kingsman was showcased at the end the whole runtime was journey to it, The starting 30 mins were litterally boring the intro to characters and the 3 cousins story with war at verge and politics, specially the politics with twisted real versions was awesome love the hitler entry at mid credits, The villian "shepard's" intro and his persona was engaging there talks and mission for war the whole strategy was good although rasputin was more intrestingly entertaining his performance and wierd talks the cake eating and dance fight it was awesome, from his meeting with kingsman the movie shifts gear and it was getting engaging, The father son relation and the son's dream to be soldier while his father argue and then his replacing of another guy as him to go at war and the twist of his killing just because of misunderstanding it was shocking then the fight back of father and the mission at end the parachute scene and whole fight at end was amazing although the sheep thing or revenge from villian felt little bizzare, The shepard's twist was surprising and at last the formation of kingsman it was fine end, Overall The action was awesome and the movie is decent. It feels too far from the existing Kingsman, and the content seems to have failed to control the speed. The audience has drastically reduced the B-class sentiment and bloodshed unique to the Kingsman series, making it bland for the Kingsman series. Rather, taking off the name Kingsman, it feels like a good pre-quality and alternative historical movie.
The general review is a killing time action movie worth watching, but it is very unfortunate for the Kingsman series.

This new one goes backward in time and quality. First, it’s an origin story that sets up how the secret British organization was created. Second, it’s not anywhere as cool or fun as its predecessors. They featured cool gadgets and technology, snazzy visuals and dizzying fights. Not this time. Ralph Fiennes stars as a nobleman who swears off war to protect his son (Harris Dickinson). Nevertheless, they get involved with an international gang of tyrants who threaten world peace. There are a few robust encounters, but it takes more than an hour of dull dialogue to get to anything juicy. Even then, there’s a lack of excitement and inventiveness that sinks the movie’s prospects even further. Expand

When a successful franchise is created, it isn't unexpected that its studio and creators will seek to exploit it in every possible way.
Business is business and profit is profit. Even when the money earned does not reach monstrous levels.

Now, no movie is necessary. That's pretty clear from the start, so in a franchise it's all about utility, and frankly I can't understand what utility Matthew Vaughn saw in exploring a prequel to Kingsman. I really don't.

The first Kingsman was an amusing breath of absurdity considering how serious the spy genre had become.
Its middling and somewhat disappointing sequel explored the same path and, even with the additions, failed to project the same freshness.

But a prequel? Set before the first world war? There's zero utility in that origin.

The King's Man have certain amusing elements, some funny moments, but even with the good cast on his hands, Matthew Vaughn can't bring any vitality to this story, or at least enough charm to make you care about them and what they're doing.

And even worse, he's selling you a sequel into this storyline, even though he's also preparing Kingsman 3.
But whether or not this will become a reality will depend a lot on the box office, which I don't think will be generous this time around.
Especially if you remember the film was postponed 9 times.
The King's Man is arriving 2 long years after its original release date.

If you have no other options, I admit it will beat the tedium. Other than that, this was really unmemorable.

Although it has been out about a month now, I finally got round to seeing The King's Man, a prequel of sorts to the Kingsman film series.

The film has some big-name actors in it, Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Harris Dickinson, Daniel Brühl, Djimon Hounsou, and Charles Dance, and is set during World War I and covers the emergence of the Kingsman organization.

A collection of some of the worst "bad guys" from history have come together to plot a war to wipe out millions, and Orlando Oxford (Ralph Fiennes) is in a race against time to stop them.

Now I was a big fan of the Kingsmen films, I thought they were well made, had some great funny moments in them, captivating characters and a good plot. However, this prequel is awful.
It is advertised as a "spy action-comedy film" yet they seemingly forgot to add in any comedy.

The majority of the film tries to be a war film (Think 1917 by Sam Mendes), and then the last 30 minutes it wakes up into something a bit closer to what you were expecting. If you were hoping this would be a modern spy film, you will also be disappointed, instead of gadgets and clever set pieces, you have way too much old-fashioned espionage, which is ok if you thought you were going to a serious war film.

By the time did kick into gear, I had already lost interest, and just wanted it to end. The film's makers, clearly did not have a solid vision here, and instead of giving us more of what The Kingsmen gave us, they tried something different, and for me it failed.

With the exception of one scene with Rasputin licking Ralph Fiennes leg, the film bored me. There were some nice action scenes, but I just didn't have any emotional investment into the characters to care.

The film is poor, and is the worst in the franchise so far.

The Good
The last half hour is decent, a great scene on the side of a cliff, Ralph Fiennes is a great actor, just a shame he was given a pile of crap to act from.

The Bad
The first 90 minutes, I just found myself constantly looking at the time, and wishing something that was advertised would happen.

Overall
For a franchise I am a big fan of, this really let me down, and for any fan of the franchise this is one film that needs to quickly be memory holed.

I score The King's Man a poor 3/10

I enjoyed seeing the depiction of key historical events, and the one battle scene shown was one of the best in the movie although it was pretty outlandish that they made it out that everything that happened during the war occured because of two secret spy organizations that were pulling the strings. In addition to being a war movie, this was also, of course, a spy flick. A lot of the slower espionage scenes didn't work for me and felt like a slog, but when the fighting did begin it was a lot of fun. There was spectacular sword fighting choreography throughout with some longer takes than you usually see in today's cut happy cinema. The action sequence at the climax was also spectacular. It was unlike anything I've seen in a movie before, and I thought it was very well executed. I thought the King's Man was a really good time. It doesn't have much emotional payoff or intriguing thematic beats, but it does what is expected and does it well. Expand

With a concept executed this poorly, I'm not even the least bit surprised this movie's as buried as it's been as of late. Part farcical exercise in revisionist history, part anti-war drama and part origin story for a franchise featuring scenes where characters' head literally explode into fireworks of gas and goo, to say that this entry in the "Kingsman" franchise has lost the proverbial plot would be an incredible understatement. This has to have either been a hack job in the editing room or a pre-existing spec script that was converted to a franchise vehicle in the last minute. I refuse to believe this is anything Matthew Vaughn originally intended it to be — he's just that talented of a filmmaker. For the first time in a while, though, not even his dazzling fight scenes can hoist this movie into the realms of watchability. Completely disappointed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me, the film fell flat. There were indeed a number of exciting (and ridiculous, but that's OK) action sequences, but it seemed to meander aimlessly between the exciting parts. A couple key characters (a villain, and the person I thought we were grooming as the hero) were killed off by about the midpoint of the movie. (That's OK when Hitchcock does it, but not this director...). I also was expecting more tongue-in-cheek based on the first two Kingsman movies, which I enjoyed more than this one. Overall: Ho hum.

And it certainly doesn't help that the final 1/3 of the film absolutely drags.

Overall, It's the kind of movie I wanted to like more than I did. It tried too hard to be something that it wasn't and ran longer than it should have.

Still if you love good movie making craft, lots to love here. The Blu-ray extras makes this even more obvious. King's Man would likely have made $350 million or more if not for covid.

It was as entertaining, though in a slightly different way, as the first movie in the franchise. The violence was shocking occasionally and the excellent film making definitely helped to execute and lift some of these moments to a high dramatic effect.

It’s set during the events of the first world war and it uses this setting and period to perfection with the way it’s reimagined. There are a small misdirections that I didn’t see coming and with it several other interesting twists.

The acting and production are really good down to the score and costumes. The only thing that sucks is how long we had to wait for this to come out. It’s finally streaming so if you have HBO max this is definitely something you should watch, just don’t bring the kids. There’s a lot of other adult content other then violence.

Weak Original for Kingsman

Story for Kingsman origins is very strange. It's because authors try to play with drama and popcorn action movie simultaneously. The result - story goes from good action to boring cliche scenes. Also final is very frustrating and even bad because in the middle story too many time wastes on main characters, so main story just quickly ends and we see ending credits. It's very frustrating.

Acting was ok, some good new faces in the franchise and of course cameos for old characters. Action and visual is still good, but not as it was in first two films.

As a Kingsman fan I don't recommend this film, maybe next will be better.

The whole series of films were midly entertaining if somewhat muddled, but this origin story was an absolute disaster that should have never been made. Yes, it's story and fantasy, but to screw around that much with real history is just going a bit too far. If it had simply tried to be an alternate history, and then cast the previoous film s as simply being part of that alternate history, then maybe, just maybe, there's a semi-plausible story here. But to set it amidst well-documented world events just didn't work. There were enough bad forces at work that no pissed off Scotsman to be the arch villain architect was necessary. War's futility is obvious to anyonme who has ever participated in it, been affectred by it, or even read about it. This attempt to write a backstory of an organization dedicated to keeping the world safe and at peace through utlimately overly violent means is an insult to the intelligence of any thinking, educated person. Maybe the ultimate goal of armed forces is peace (though I'm not fully convinced of that) but the arms manufacturers and other who profit from war arte the real arch villains, and this movies serves only to distract a modern audience from the reality. While it may claim to be as gritty as it is, with lots of blood and gray matter splatter precisely to show how awful war it, it is still, utlimately, a film glorifying the efforts of a small few using extreme violence to defeat some ultimate eveil force. The film is riddled with plot holes, inconsistencies, historical inaccuracies and anachronisms, and the actors, even the distinguished Mr. Fiennes turnmed in caricature performaces at best. Don't waste your time with this piece of tripe. Unless you'd really like to imagine what the WWI era would be as a video game. Actually, a video game might have better acting and plot. Expand

After watching it though, I was completely blown away by how much I enjoyed it. However, the sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) was quite disappointed with its nonsensical plot and pacing. After countless delays due to covid, the 3rd entry in the franchise, The King’s Man (2021), finally came out. It is a prequel set during WWI about how the Kingsman formed. So is the franchise back on track or is this another disappointing entry?

Firstly, the cast is great and all give great performances. Ralph Fiennes plays Orlando and is the founder of the Kingsman. He is just perfect casting and seeing him pull off some awesome fight scenes is just wonderful to watch. Gemma Arterton plays Polly Watkins who is a maid and agent to Orlando. She is an absolute joy when she is on screen thanks to her funny wit and quips. She and Ralph Fiennes surprisingly have great chemistry when on screen together. Djimon Hounsou plays Shola a butler and agent to Orlando. He is awesome to watch and he also works well on screen together with Ralph Fiennes. Rhys Ifans as Rasputin is the biggest highlight in this film. His deranged yet menacing performance is just a sight to behold! There is a surprisingly amount of well-known actors in the film even with their short screen time. They all do a great job with some actors wanting me to see more of them.

What makes the Kingsman franchise great is the action scenes and this film still delivers on that. There is a mesmerizing fight scene with Rasputin himself that just put a smile on my face throughout. There is also a very gritty and brutal No Man's land sequence that is not like previous movies but was very well choreographed. The final action sequence has the level of ridiculousness expected from the franchise and it is very fun to watch. One thing this film does differently from previous films is a more serious and emotional story to tell. The relationship between Orlando and his son Conrad is the core of the film. Orlando wants to protect his son but Conrad wants to fulfil his duty and fight in the war. I appreciated this part of the story and I think it was executed very well.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of tonal clashes in the film. It will go from this serious World War I film to a weird wacky film where a guy gets his thigh licked and then back again to a serious film. It happens a lot throughout the first 2/3 of the film and it can be a bit jarring that the director can't just settle on one. The story itself is also quite weak and a little overstuffed with it trying to cover the entire WWI events within it. The pacing is quite slow at points in the first half due to it trying to summarize the things that were happening at the time. It does feel a bit too long at 131 minutes and could have been cut by 10-15 minutes.

Harris Dickinson who plays Conrad (Orlando's son) is a bit dull. I wouldn't say it is due to his performance but more down to how his character is written. While every other character has these outward personalities, Conrad is just dull compared to everyone else. It's a shame as his character is the emotional core of this film but his character is not memorable. There is a villainous group in this film called the Flock and they are the ones manipulating things behind the scenes. Unfortunately, they are also a very bland villainous group with a generic motive and don't do much to stick in your mind. They are led by "The Shepherd" whose face is kept hidden until the end where it is revealed who he is. Unfortunately, the revelation is predictable and disappointing. He ends up being a very weak villain compared to the awesome Rasputin who probably should've been the main villain. Overall, this film delivers if you just want entertaining action sequences. If you wanted an interesting story about how the Kingsman came to be then you are going to be thoroughly disappointed. It is a little difficult to say whether this is better than Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) as they are both flawed movies. This movie isn't a must-watch, even for people who watched the previous Kingsman movie. Nevertheless, it is still pretty enjoyable and you will have some enjoyment watching this.
