It's not bad, it just feels too much like filler and a set up for the final film, which I have no doubt will be far more entertaining. Kind of a shame though considering how good the second one was.

This is a good first part of the last Hunger Game films. The story is great, the characters were good, there isn't much action, but the end feels very cheap. So overall, it's a good movie with a bad ending.

I personally was very put off by the idea that Mockingjay would be split into 2 parts. (Now it seems every movie has/will do that--Breaking Dawn, Deathly Hallows, Avengers: Infinity War, Allegiant, etc.) I read many reviews online, and theyI personally was very put off by the idea that Mockingjay would be split into 2 parts. (Now it seems every movie has/will do that--Breaking Dawn, Deathly Hallows, Avengers: Infinity War, Allegiant, etc.) I read many reviews online, and they almost convinced me (without even watching the movie) that THG: Mockingjay--Part 1 was a pointless, boring cash-grab; a set-up movie filled with exposition and "filler"; a holdover for “THG Mockingjay--Part 2”. But if I have learned anything from watching so many recent films, it is this: don't judge a film by its posters, trailer, or reviews without seeing the movie for yourself--some films may really surprise you and are better (or worse) than you expected.

I think some of the characters didn’t get the screentime they deserved. But I truly only think that because you got to know the characters well in the books, and I think it’s kind of hard to replicate that in the movies without some kind of internal monologue. If Mockingjay was a standalone film not based on a book, I’d probably have a very difficult time relating to the characters. However, I know them all well enough to not be that disappointed by a character’s short screen time.

I can understand why some people who didn't read the books were disappointed with and failed to connect to Mockingjay--Part 1. But those who read the books should've been satisfied with the film. I think that because I read the books, I maybe could appreciate the movie better than some people (due to the fact that many of scenes in the movie might’ve seemed pointless, unnecessary, or boring to those who haven’t read the books). I personally wasn’t bored during the movie—because while nobody was fighting to the death, and there wasn’t much action—there was still good performances from the cast and some nice “political subtext”.

Because of the focus given on character-driven storylines and political allegories, I think that some viewers were distanced by the film’s approach. I personally think that instead of adapting the book as well as they did, they should’ve created some battle scenes (possibly focusing on missions from each side of the war between the districts and the capitol). Maybe they could’ve shown some battles that rebel and Capitol soldiers fought, with people such as Beetee, Haymitch, Boggs, President Snow, etc. overseeing it all. “Mockingjay Part 1 is less popular than its predecessors because it's a deliberate move away from action towards a more cerebral, darker kind of war movie.” Because the movie doesn’t rely on action scenes, and it’s still good (IMO), it's proof that THG films aren’t dumb YA novel adaptations. They can do well without deadly competitions in arenas and “silly teenage romance”.

The movie has a lot of things that probably turned off some people--no Hunger Games, no real action/fighting, less of an emphasis on the love-triangle romance, being split in two parts, etc. And being on top of “Fandango's list of most-anticipated films of 2014” probably contributed to this film’s lukewarm critical reception. When people had such enthusiasm and high expectations for the movie and they were disappointed, they probably got angry. So, besides a lack of action sequences and some characters getting little screentime, I actually thought that the movie wasn’t bad. This movie probably could’ve explored/developed certain aspects of the movie’s environment/atmosphere better than it did, but I think it’s still a bit better than the first HG film. It’s still not nearly as good as Catching Fire though. Mockingjay-Part 1 “did not do a good enough job showcasing the conflict between the characters. The third book was very somber and full of distrust. The movie…didn't really capture all that you read, where previous movies they did.” The second one can reach level of tension and excitement that this one never can.

Mockingjay-Part 2 will be released on November 20, 2015.

I have reviewed 33 other movies, including the 2014 films: Dracula Untold, The Maze Runner, The Expendables 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Giver, Sharknado 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Edge of Tomorrow, X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, Blended, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Divergent, Transcendence, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Lego Movie, and more.

I review TV shows, such as: The Flash, Arrow (Season 3), Gotham, The Last Ship, Sleepy Hollow, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, The 100, I Wanna Marry Harry, Crisis, Gang Related, and more. I also have reviewed the mobile Android games: Minecraft Pocket Edition, Clash of Clans, and Five Night's at Freddy's.

The third book did not need to be split into 2 films if this was to be the outcome of the Part 1 instalment. The lack of excitement is not my reasoning for this rating. The film was flush with intrigue and theme and emotion and decent enough acting and dialogue. It has enough meaningful lessons on how propaganda is just as important as fighting battles, if not more, to enlighten anyone. But those elements, unfortunately, are all this film had to offer. No conceivable climax or conclusion, no fulfillment at the end of this 2 hours. It did not make me want to see the next film, it made me want it to come to some kind of ending already. I wish I could go back, and wait for the Part 2 to be released, so I could watch them back to back. Seeing this was a waste of time. Expand

A movie which went perfectly with the book. Now that is what makes a good adaptation. The direction was great - Lawrence (well, both of them) mesmerized again with his skills, everything went good.

But, the same concept of having two parts for Mockingjay has its cons, which will not be overlooked by many. Nobody sees the point in making two parts. A lot of the parts in Part I could have been skipped, and be merged with the finale.

At the same time, this characteristic is what earned Catching Fire the thumbs-up as well. The book was slow, no doubt. But, it is a book all the same. In that sense, yes, Mockingjay I is a job very well done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Its really just okay to me. There's plenty of flaws because of how they stretch the hell out of it. Manly because of the idiotic splitting of the final chapter. There's scenes of them just walking around for like three minutes or of them just sitting there in silence for three minutes. I don't get it. The book is small enough for one movie. The movie is half down and the conclusion to this one felt that way. Just ends. This more about the story then the movie (fault is manly on Susan), it's about political gain for majority of the movie. Just trying to outwit the other ones with the better/more powerful message. Nonsense really. The action and CGI is pretty strong and the performance
s by the cast was the best out of the series, so that boasts it up a lot. The dramatic tension of who's dying or whats goes going to happen next was pretty powerful. The haunting details and showings of death, destruction, fear, etc.were powerful. Its just bogged down by a slow and boring plot, not enough fighting, half a movie, dumb plot about political power, etc. Overall I enjoyed it but nothing special and the worst of the series. 7.9/10

There wasn't many action and there were some parts that almost put me to sleep & bored me. The plot was a new step for the franchise and a good setup for the epic finale that I hope will happen in the next movie. Jennifer Lawrence was great as always & so was the cast and the CGI for Philip Seymour Hoffman. The score was good and this one song by Lorde that I liked.
Overall, it was good. I know so people were complaining that movie had to be broken up in 2 parts but that's good because I don't want an overstuffed finale and it ends up terrible and disappointing like Spider-Man 3, X-Men:The Last Stand & The Matrix Revolutions. So I'm happy that they split it up because this movie got a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes and the HG1 got a 84% & HGCF got a 89% and the final movie can get like a 91% or something.

The always emotional Hunger Games series does not let up in this part 1 to the final film of the franchise. Jennifer Lawrence gives another incredible performance as Katniss; which in my opinion is the main piece of the puzzle that makes this film franchise more than just another set of teen films. Julianne Moore and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman also play their parts very well and give film just another added layer to make it even more enjoyable. Elizabeth Banks continues to be one the best parts of the series and gives another awesome performance as Effie. Overall, the second to last installment has its emotional scenes and keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat till the very end. Expand

As the point of the games is completely removed from the films presence. This therefore would add a unique edge as Katniss’ journey through fame and struggle for Peter is shown with great light. Nevertheless this consequence of light, leads to too much detail which appears of an excess through the duration of the film, as the main climax only lied between the scenes of reuniting Katniss and Peter. Even so the tension through the stories concept was fulfilled with intelligent, bold, but obscure effects via scene distribution in Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) anger which is well thought through in accordance to acting the role successfully. Additionally the growing admiration for Peter that develops through the film is complimented by the phenomenal representation in recreating the distress through costume design and makeup construction by layering and contouring, accurately executing his purpose during the film, even though evidencing this purpose during the film could be improved, instead of the single resource of the TV analogy via scripture. And understandably there was a large amount of material in the last book that unlike the previous two couldn't be confronted in one viewing but this movie doesn't address that meaningfully. Where this one should have focused on orienting us with district 13,the state of all the other districts after 12's bombing or Katniss new status it instead meanders around the aforementioned points, whilst contrastingly never explores them to the length they deserve and could be in a 1hr+ movie of a much anticipated series. They waste most of the movie on vapid scenes of the creation of the katniss revolutionary brand as well as her relationship with gale now peeta presence isn't an active obstacle. With that said it's still not a completely disappointing film and doesn't ruin the standard of the franchise. It's inoffensive when consumed in succession with it's concluding counterpart . And the cinematography and performances are still impressive nonetheless. Expand

While the Potter franchise successfully transitioned from it's 12-year old demographic, The Hunger Games, did not quite manage so well.

Not all is bad. There is some interesting criticism here of media and propaganda, but those are all smack -in-the-face type of observations. The film makes no secret of it. The darkness comes from the topic itself: the film is set in the aftermath of a violent crackdown by the Capitol onto the rebelling districts. It is dystopic, but what is missing is the emotion behind it. Jennifer Lawrence is more Jennifer Lawrence than Katniss, and when she is Katniss...well, Katniss is annoying. The consistent need to push her into doing what she has to do is quite frustrating. Mind you, it is (probably?) a limitation imposed in the Hunger Games books, but that still does not make her any less annoying and infuriating when she'd rather choose Peeta over the future of the whole world.

Technically, the Hunger Games have polished up quite nicely. The CGI does not look as dated as it did in the first film, which is good. This film is very grim and dark - the colourful costumes of the Capitol have been replaced by the darkness of the underground shelter and the military uniform. Overall, though, the film sustains the continuation of a mediocre, yet entertaining, franchise. That being said, this one is the least entertaining film so far. The whole "Part 1" charade is a charade at its best. Not much really happens here, beyond some character "development" for Katniss (also known as everyone pushing her to get her act together).

The first film is still the most engaging and entertaining one - let us hope they will end the series on a better note than Mockingjay Part 1, because otherwise, it will be a snooze.

This is the third movie in "Hunger Games" series.
I haven't read the books but watched previous two movies. In my opinion, this one is the weakest so far. While performances of Jennifer Lawrence, Phillip Saymour Hoffman (RIP), and Julianne Moore deserve praise, there are too many over-stratched episodes. The director probably tried to follow the books closely. However, many people think that by making two movies out of one book, they were just milking more money out of the audience. There were a few scenes that were great, but too few for a two hour movie. If cut in half, I would love it.
I understand that Part 1 is a preparation for a grand finale but as I was leaving the theater I was disappointed, I expected much more. I hope Part 2 will justify being bored half of Part 1.

The storyline is vanilla and boring which can be summarised as a protagonist striving to free a world from tyranny, the way in which this is done however is outside the box and creative but I question its execution.

With Jennifer Lawrence at the helm, she does a poor job in evoking a passionate narrative and leaves you feeling like she’s simply trying too much which is annoying and irritating to watch.

The film stagnates and over saturates the viewer with the same monotone imagery repeating the same message, the constant sit downs with supporting actors comforting each other or offering pep talks gets old after the first several times, this is basically the film, with little else to add contrast to mix things up.

Pros:
Main character is a strong woman
World building
The movies pacing is slower than the first two which I found more enjoyable

Cons:
Not that much actually happens in the movie.
Some scenes could have been explained better before they happen. There was a couple of times I had no idea what was going on until it was explained afterwards.
I'm personally not a fan of the leader of district 13. Her character seems somewhat generic and not that interesting.

Whilst unquestionably the weakest of the three films to date it still has much to commend it. Top of the list has to be the excellent Jennifer Lawrence for whom the word coasting doesn't seem to exist in her vocabulary. With this role she has created a female heroine the like of whom hasn't been seen since Sigourney Weaver delighted us in the 'Alien' films. The tone of this chapter is certainly darker (even without all the killing) and there is less action and more exposition, but somehow it all works. Julianne Moore is a welcome addition to the cast and effortlessly integrates herself into the film. The late Phillip Seymour Hoffman shamefully has little to do in this his last film appearance and Liam Hemsworth is limp and uninteresting as Lawrence's Conflicted love interest. Still, it's all very watchable even though more will be expected from next year's final act. Expand

I enjoyed the first movie and like the second one even more so, but this left a lot to be desired and not in a good way. Hate to say this, but if you've read the books, don't waste your time on this. Just wait and save your money for the second movie that will tell a much more compelling portion of this story.

Another great part of Hunger Games and great movie about dictatorship. Again there are some improvements to the predecessor:
First, the world of Panem, the dialogues and the story around dictatorship are perfectly made: Donald Sutherland as Snow is very impressive and convincing, the perfect villain. Also I noticed, that the main topic of the franchise is propaganda, my favourite theme.
The 2nd part of the movie is more action orientated and they had some flaws in the first and second Hunger Games. But in this movie they were tense, maybe because it was not so clear if the good guys will survive this and the bunker scenes were also nice. In addition I liked, that this movie was a bit different than the first two: no more games, but real war.
Another improvement: Jennifer Lawrence was finally convincing.
Oh..and I like the dark, threatening atmosphere.

There was one element that I dislike a lot: Julianne Moore. I cant watch her, she is simply too ugly to be shown, lol. And I didnt understand, why suddenly Katniss was so much in love with Peeta, although Gale fits better to her (see the first movie) and their ralationship was more a fake.

I’m not a big fan of Hunger Games, but the franchise keep surprise me.

The first aspect I would like to mention is the rebellion. It’s so different from the previous installments, and I totally love it. The ”games” didn’t impress me as much as I would like to. So I really did enjoy this third Hunger Games movie. There’re even some metaphorical messages witch really gives the movie depth. The first act is okay, but not more. And the opening scene could have had a much greater contexture. I did expect a lot unique things that Catching Fire had, but there're not much of those. Many do criticize this movie because it doesn’t have much action, and I somewhat agree. The tempo is very slow, but I didn’t find it boring. On the contrary; I thought it was very entertaining. There are not much CGI and the movie overall felt very natural. But there are some events that are predictable, which is not good. The best thing with this movie is the second act, it’s very entertaining. But the third is a bit disappointing. The ending could have been much more exiting and eventful. I didn’t feel any excitement when the movie ended. Overall is this third Hunger Games movie great, even though the soundtrack could have been much more astounding and powerful. But the main cast are all very good and the movie did surpass my expectations.

The focus of this movie is on insurrection, survival and hope. There's a big difference between this and the previous movie. The strong sides are the dialogs, plot and strong development of existing characters. But the big weakness is the lack of action.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 gets a 7/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With the presumably thrilling conclusion to The Hunger Games series just over the horizon, we return to last year’s Mockingjay – Part 1 in an attempt for my reviews to maintain at least some contemporary relevance. There are two ways to look at a film which is part of a series. One is to view it as a chapter in the larger story, making this one little more than the calm before the storm. The other way is to see if the narrative works as a standalone film, and sadly here it does not.

The film has followed the trend of turning the last part of a novel series into a two part picture (Harry Potter, Twilight, to an extent The Hobbit) so that Part 1 becomes so much set-up for a ‘missing’ final act. Is it a cynical cash-grab to stretch the franchise out for another year, or sincere attempt to do justice to the literature? Who can say?

With Mockingjay – Part 2, this effect is thoroughly in place, moving from one relatively unsatisfying cliff-hanger at the end of Catching Fire to another at the end of itself. It somehow manages to be another big ol’ film of (just) over two hours, although it’s almost half an hour shorter than Catching Fire, which took over half its running time to actually get to the bloomin’ Hunger Games.

Though the full title retains the series banner, there are no games here, so the arena combat angle that provided a clear structure to the first two films is gone. Maybe that’s for the best. The second film was in many ways a retread of the first, though the pre-game ruminations I’ve just lamented were really about the seeds of rebellion, and our heroine Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and her Mockingjay becoming the symbols of the revolution (the Mockingjay starts life as a symbolic token Katniss is given by an elderly neighbour in the first film, which gradually takes on greater significance).

So it’s not a standalone story, but what’s this film about, and where does it take the characters we met in the last two films? At first glance, not very far. Most of the movie takes place in an underground bunker where the rebellion is based, safe below District 13 (a mysterious place previously believed to have been long destroyed), while the two sides throw propaganda back and forth at each other. Katniss does get out into the field, but she only fires one arrow (although granted, it does quite some damage).

But at the film’s core is this media warfare of hearts and minds, and Katniss’ initial reluctance to play into it. Her struggle is to weigh the needs of the many, who see so much in her, against her own personal losses and dissatisfaction with how the revolution is being run. She is always asking who should have been saved, and at what cost?

The film inherits the great cast of the series, from Jennifer Lawrence herself, whose name is now synonymous with the franchise and characters, to the continued presence of Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth Banks, who play off each other nicely after their frosty relationship of the last two films. What is good is that as we spend more time out of the area with the rebels, Gale (Liam Hemsworth) finally has a little more to do, getting out into the field with Katniss and even leading one of the film’s few action sequences, a daring raid on the capital to liberate the captured victors of Catching Fire.

Similarly, Philip Seymour Hoffman, who tragically died during filming, manages to maintain a complete and worthy presence as the games master turned rebel propagandist. His more reasoned encouragement of Katniss brings a subtle reserve to offset the fiery District 13 President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) who is all rousing speeches and lack of compromise, continually at loggerheads with our heroine. Much of the first third of the film is her coercive attempts to make her agree to participate in the propaganda; though we ask ourselves how different this really is to the gaudy reality TV of the first film.

Everybody has their own two cents to say on how the revolution should be run, but on the other side of the coin. President Snow (Donald Sutherland) abandons his affable façade in the face of all out war to snarl and gloat from the video screen.

I have said that true action sequences are few and far between; they are dispersed like raisins in a bowl of porridge through the film’s inflated length, but they come as a re-engaging wake up call. I particularly enjoyed the scenes of open rebellion in other Districts.

Returning Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence has finally delivered the darker sequel suggested by his back catalogue (Constantine, I am Legend). Of note is the apocalyptic sequence in which Katniss breaks down while exploring the ruins of District 12. The Hunger Games universe has always come with a high human cost, but never has it been so graphic.

So while the film is well made and there are many standout scenes, the pacing still feels slow and the dramatic narrative is far from satisfying. After all, it’s really only half a film.

Don't expect anything great from this film except for special effects unless of course you're a twelve year old boy or girl.

The main problem I had with the movies and the books is that, if you are actually mature, you will have no emotional attachment to any of the people in the series. This is purely because they have no personality and are completely two dimensional as you would expect from a movie where the target audience is only there for explosions or Liam Hemsworth. However, I don't believe this excuses not trying to improve on Susanne Collin's simplistic writing style for the sake of making a piece of art, which they could do with their massive budget, as well as pander to their original audience.

One of the worst aspects of the movie had to be the acting. I am sincerely disappointed with Jennifer Lawrence's performance, since she is supposed to be capable of delivering Oscar winning pieces of acting yet in this she was just plain standard. She seemed like she was just trying to look like she cared and not that she really did. A key point of acting is that you have to become your character and feel what they are feeling, if not then you must be extremely good at lying: in this film Jennifer Lawrence seemed to be stuck somewhere in the middle in an unconvincing and cringe worthy performance. Most of the acting was like this with the exception of Philip Seymour Hoffman who was brilliant and Katnisse's sister who was terrible. (average for a child actor though)

Some scenes of the film did however hold the film up with fantastic special effects and directing that made you come back from the boring scenes of Katniss crying or characters you didn't care about talking. However when they did show these scenes it did just make me feel frustrated that they would spend so much money on CGI and sets that they couldn't spend some more money on writers or half decent actors.

I seriously believe that there does need to be a change in the Cinema industry and that is acting over attractiveness. Instead of hiring guys with washboard abs to play main characters, why not hire people who can actually act? The same goes for female roles as well, the actress who played Prim was utterly wooden but had a pretty face so she got the part. What the hell is going on?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Since the first novel was released in 2008, The Hunger Games series has become one of the biggest YA franchises on the market, and it's been probably the only series to legitimately rival the Harry Potter franchise in sheer popularity. Although The Maze Runner and Divergent have enjoyed enough success to spawn their own film adaptations, neither have been nearly as lucrative as The Hunger Games. The franchise's complicated and timely hero as well as its biting political subtext has attracted many people to the series, and seven years, later the final film has been released to close the series. To get ready for it, I decided to watch the penultimate chapter, Mockingjay: Part 1. After destroying the arena at the 75th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss is brought to the underground District 13 in order to assume her identity as the Mockingjay, a symbol of hope and rebellion for the people of Panem. However, Katniss's hope begins to burn out when she realizes that Peeta was captured by the Capitol and is being brainwashed to convince the people to stop the rebellion. Even as a fan of the series, splitting the final book into two parts felt less like a narrative enhancement and more like an attempt to make more money. Some scenes seemed to drag on too long or be completely unnecessary. The book could easily be adapted into an epic three-hour conclusion and still be effective. There was also much less action than the previous films. However, the action scenes that were present are as poignant and exciting as ever. The series' strengths have always outweighed its issues, and Mockingjay: Part 1 is no exception. Jennifer Lawrence is still mesmerizing in her portrayal of Katniss, and the social commentary is just as timely and striking as it is in the other films. It may feel like too much exposition for the conclusion, but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 is a grim and exciting set-up for a hopefully action-packed finale. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is a slow-paced, tension-building first half to a two-part finale of the Hunger Games franchise. Francis Lawrence shows us the world of Panem without the vicious games, bringing to light a different perspective in this dystopian society. Most new characters are underdeveloped with the focus on the demons that Katniss and Peeta deal with in the aftermath of Catching Fire. It is essentially the Katniss, Peeta and Gail show in a young adult molded film that is saved by its overpowering political subtext. It hopes that the intensity built pays off, although waiting a year to release Part 2 will make most of the tension dissipate.

I was a bit disappointed with the lack of use for the oscar-calibre cast. I mean you have Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Donald Sutherland yet not much other than generic plot-moving dialogue from them. I understand that the film is based on a novel and that the filmmakers wanted to stay as true to them as possible, but with actors like that how can you not try to make these characters come to life off the page using their unique acting styles? I also found that the splitting of Mockingjay into two parts was unnecessary as the tension-building in this film only works if the events of Part 2 are seen in succession, not a year later. I would have preferred a three-hour movie instead of 2 two-hour films released a year apart.

Regardless it is a decent filibuster film due to its strong political commentary that makes most fans, die-hard and casual, wish that the final film was released at the beginning of 2015. Even if it burns, we burn with it because no matter what fans will see it for the highly anticipated climax of this great series.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I must say that I am no fan of the series, the other two films entertained me but not impassioned me. I believe that history is for young-adult (I am, but I like the deep arguments and in my opinion this is not it). When I went to see Mockingjay Part 1 with my friends I thought, "Well, at least the action scenes make me have a good time because I do not really like history" shortly after would prove that I was wrong and now I will tell you why. To begin the concept of rebellion is widely used, but this is not the main problem, I always thought that if a concept widely used you add something new is good, but in this film do not add any interesting concept remains the same as always, two sides, shooting, hostage rescues ... When I first heard within the film the Mockingjay what I thought would finally demonstrate what can be drawn from such an argument, but it turned out just to be a instrument for advertising of one side. The scenes are unnecessarily lengthened so you end up getting bored in the action scenes the camera moves too much, and loving undertone is typical of two boys with different ideas and a girl who can not decide, well, very basic all . I do not recommend this movie people who have not seen the others, people who do not like (or simply are not interested) the saga. But if you like the series I encourage you to see it and waste your time on that boring two-hour movie that lives of the fame that the other movies won. Gentlemen, I think it's better to read the books than see this on the big screen. Expand

The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay Part 1 continues the story of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) the “girl on fire” who is now the face of the rebellion, carried away to the previously fallen District 13, after being rescued from the Hunger Games arena that Katniss had destroyed. Mocking Jay now continues the story of the main characters struggle to start the rebellion with District 13 to get their freedom back from the Capitol of Panem, while also remaining in a love triangle with Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and Peeta (John Hutcherson) who was captured and punished by the Capitol. The third movie to the sequel continues the further understanding of the characters, and shows what they will do to save the ones they love. Mocking Jay is a great movie because of good writing by continuing the story of Katniss Everdeen’s journey, and by having great actors who truly portrayed their characters by physicality, body language, facial expression and voice changes. Also, the film is adapted well from the book by grabbing details and transferring that to the screen. Finally, Mocking Jay appeals to a large audience. As other film adapted sequels like Harry Potter or Twilight, when characters come from a printed page to a movie screen, fans of the sequels cringe in excitement. This results in sold out showtimes and a theatre where not a whisper or a blink of an eye are heard nor seen. After watching the other previous films of the Hunger Games, as I walked in the theatre and found my seat were just small steps, to fulfill a year full of excitement of re watching the trailers, and to be in this very moment of watching Mocking Jay Part 1. The thrill from reading the book was in affect, as I waited to see the courageous, brave and deeply emotional Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the hurt and lovable Peeta (John Hutcherson), quiet yet fearless Gale (Liam Hemsworth), drunk and helpful Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), the blood-dripping terrifying President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and all other characters that help or want to destroy Katniss throughout her journey as the face of the rebellion. As I longed for Katniss’ bravery and heart in the Mocking Jay, I was a little disappointed after being emotionally and psychologically crushed by the last Games she had entered, she begins Mocking Jay scared and sleepless because no one but Peeta (John Hutcherson) understands what she is going through. As she always reflects on the fact that her team in the arena did not stick to the plan of saving Peeta instead of her. As hurt as she is, after being put to see how the Capitol burned District 12 her hometown to the ground, killing thousands of her people and how President Snow (Donald Sutherland) had made it a crime to even speak to rebels. Katniss begins her journey as the face of the rebellion for District 13’s President Coin (Julianne Moore) to gather more rebels in the districts but, with consequences that she will only do it if District 13 saves Peeta and other tributes in the Capitol. As Jennifer Lawrence carries on the story of Katniss Everdeen, Lawrence continues to portray as the same Katniss that was in the first Hunger Games, the Katniss that had volunteered for her sister Prim in the games by giving the same facial expressions of bravery and commitment to helping her family as Lawrence did in the first Hunger Games, when first given the role of Katniss Everdeen. Lawrence was able to show her bravery but also show how deeply crushed she was by the games by having a weak voice that sounds as if she had been crying forever and her physicality was weak and unhealthy both were beneficial to understanding Katniss Everdeen’s role in the movie and how she truly had been crushed by the games. Lawrence stated in an interview “when you find Katniss Everdeen in Mocking Jay she is completely stripped down, she was already suffering from Post Dramatic Stress from the first and second movie. Now she has t completely rebuild herself...” (LionsgateFilmUK). Lawrence also use body language, facial expression and her voice to show how she was also mentally ill by having a tiresome face with a beaten body which hunched over, using a scratchy voice when caught sleeping after hours. In a cast interview, Jennifer Lawrence was asked how in the first films there was more action but in the last film is acting more with her eyes and facial expression and how the is different in Mocking Jay? Lawrence replied stating “ Lot less action in this movie, she is in a very different place emotionally, the games have completely changed her. So, she has to totally rebuild herself, not as much action more so of her reaction to everything” (Beyond the Trailer). Expand

Overall in my opinion not worth seeing. Many people say its because you have to read the book, but when a movie finishes and not a single person claps in the theater ,that means something is wrong.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" is far away the worst movie of the series when the focus is stir emotions. Obviously, so many people cried in the parts of Josh suffering ('cause, lord, his fans are like, crazy as any others), and so many people cried when he was back to Jennifer (but remembering: also thinking that she was the enemy), and in the parts of the districts (OK, I admit, I cried when Katniss sang The Hanging Tree too). But most of the people who has cried read the books as well. Was not that emotional to my parents (who just listened to me talking about the books over and over again), or to my friends (that think that the only thing important in the movie is Josh parts). Is not a bad movie considering the direction and the script. But comparing that movie to the other two, it's not the best. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Hunger Games film franchise has been one of the most popular in recent memory. From the first film on, the film's premise has centered around murder and class warfare, but at the center of that bleakness was a beacon of hope, Katniss Everdeen, however, in Mockingjay Part 1, that hope takes a turn for the worse. Centered around the aftermath of the events of Catching Fire, we find our heroine at her darkest point, surrounded by a colony of freedom fighters and lost without the man whom she has grown to care for, Peeta. There's a shadow looming over Katniss and a growing weigh upon her shoulders. The penultimate film in this franchise has moved on from the games and into the war.
Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) finds herself in an underground bunker within District 13. Following the escape from the quarter quell, the tributes have either been captured by the Capitol or were rescued by Plutarch's (Philip Seymour Hoffman) rebel squadron. Katniss is suffering from PTSD and remains under the care of the district's medical staff. Fellow survivor Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) is suffering from the same despair and is resigned to survivors remorse, mourning for the loss of his beloved Annie and the others who were captured by the Capital. Katniss is taken to see President Coin (Julianne Moore), the president of District 13 and the leader of the rebellion who requires Katniss' help to win the war over President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Katniss reluctantly agrees, but on the condition that Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and the other tributes would be rescued. Just one problem, it appears Peeta has been recruited and is now a spokesperson for the Capital and is speaking out against the revolution.
Katniss, believing that Peeta is being brainwashed into saying these outlandish remarks, decides that she will not rest until she can rescue her friend. Through a series of vignettes, the rebellion broadcasts images of Katniss in battle defeating the Capitol guards and hoping to convince those unwilling to fight to take up arms and join Katniss and District 13's side. With the help of Gale (Liam Hemsworth), her former beau, Katniss travels from district to district to assess the damages done by the Capitol and reaffirming her decision to take up arms against her oppressors. Peeta, through a series of intimate interviews with Capitol spokesperson Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci), pleads for the resistance to lay down their arms and work to strive peace with the Capitol. The two former companions who had protected each other in the games are now sparring in a war of words with the fate of the world at each others finger tips.
Each side makes their move to gain a powerful foothold in their vicious war. As the rebellion gains support, President Coin elects to send in a rescue mission to bring back to captive tributes, including Peeta, and remove the Capital's most powerful propaganda weapon. With time running out, will the resistance succeed in rescuing the tributes and turning the tide of the war or will they fall prey to the plans of President Snow and tip the scales in the favor the Capital?
Deciding to stick closely to the plot of the novel by Suzanne Collins, director Francis Lawrence delivers a politically charged dystopian drama that is not for the faint of heart. Like many war films, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is unwavering in its relentless depiction of the brutality of war. That being said, the film may be too bleak for many of the films core fans. Fans of the book series on the other hand are sure to be prepared for the events that transpire.
The acting in the movie has a lot to be desired. Whether it be the screenplay from Peter Craig and Danny Strong or the actors themselves, there's something missing in the delivery of much of the films dialogue. Jennifer Lawrence is the staple that keeps this film together but much of the film is spent retreading on the awkward love triangle between Katniss, Gale and Peeta. The chemistry between Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence is as flat as it was in the previous films. Josh Hutcherson, in limited screen time, makes the most of it and turns in a great performance. The transformation of his character from the previous films til now is one of the bright spots of Mockingjay Part 1. Two disappointments for me were the use of Julianne Moore and the late great Philip Seymour Hoffman. Each provide lifeless depictions of their characters and the lack of emotions in the delivery of important dialogue is truly disappointing.
Overall, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 is excruciatingly slow and opts for more drama than action this time around. Film goers may be disappointed at the pacing of this one. Truth be told, this final book did not need to be split into two separate movies; one would've been just fine. Lionsgate missed the mark with this decision. Let's hope word of mouth doesn't hurt too much because this franchise deserves a better fate.

I enjoyed the first two installments of the series and this movie just didn't deliver. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 felt like a long extended trailer for Mockingjay - Part 2. You will sit there watching this movie waiting for something to happen, the last ten minutes of this movie were intense and entertaining, and I was thinking, "Yes, now we get to the good part," then the movie ended. Jennifer Lawrence gave a fantastic performance as Katniss, but Josh Hutcherson did not have as much screen time as he has had in the past two movies, making it harder for him to build on his character. Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Donald Sutherland have excellent performances. The only problem with characters I had with this movie was Julianne Moore, her acting was great but the story did not go deep enough into character. The last thing wrong with this movie is Katniss Spent a great deal of the movie crying, she did one thing throughout this two hour movie, and you already saw it in the trailer. Expand

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson really nailed their roles , julianne Moore , philip seymour hoffman , Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson also did their roles very well. My only complaint with the acting is from the rebels in D13! I didn't really felt like they are rebels. They only seemed to act like someone was forcing them to act. The direction was almost perfect! it's amazing how they took things like "the hanging tree" song from the book and made it into such powerful scene. I get why Francis decided to make Part 1 as a propaganda movie and part 2 as war movie! because if both the films had the same theme then splitting the book into 2 films would have been a stupid decision but 2 films should stand out on its own and Mockingjay part 1 do standout! but with a cliffhanger though. If you have read the book you know what is coming and how things which felt to some people as boring in part 1 will benefit once they see part 2. i didn't felt like the movie was boring at all like some people say! but yes , if you expected to see an adrenaline rush film like Hunger Games or Catching Fire! then you will be disappointed.Considering what is going to happen in Part 2! this film is very well done with justice to the book. conclusion :- brilliantly acted , smart political intrigue , great direction. For both people who have read the books or who have only seen the films I think they will be satisfied.

I was sceptical at first whilst going into the movie and yet I was intrigued to see how the narrative would play out on screen. I personally felt that the third book in the Hunger Games Trilogy “Mockingjay” was the most monotonous and disengaging out of the lot, so when I heard that Lionsgate was going to split the novel into two I like most people thought it was a heartless cash grab that would not pay off.

Mockingjay Part 1 is by no means better than the other two previous instalments of the series but it is not however a bad film contradictory of some of the other more naïve reviews. It serves (as I had hoped) as an engaging build up for the final chapter in the Hunger Games cinematic series. Although I still think that it was not right to split Mockingjay up, the first part has proved to be better than I thought and I walked out of the cinema feeling exited for the finale.

For people who have not read the books and have only watched the “Hunger Games” and “Catching Fire” I have to mention that the movie is a complete deviation from the practically identical structure of the other two films. Mockingjay Part 1 delves deeper as you might expect into the intricacies of building a revolution against the capitol. If you enjoyed the two movies purely for the spectacle of the arena and the survival element of the plot you will not like this movie but if you are invested in the acting talents of this series you are more likely to see this movie as an enjoyable cinematic experience.

For people who have read the book I will say that Mockingjay Part 1 is a pleasant surprise. I thought like the book the film would be dull and slow paced. The first two thirds of this film are worth your time even if the final part felt a little stretched. All of the Mockingjay book by Suzanne Collins was a disappointment for me but I think the plot has been rectified and showcased properly in this film. The film unlike the book expands on Collin’s world, in a subtle way and gives you more of an insight into the establishment of opposing propaganda clips which I found thoroughly entertaining and interesting (this was not depicted so much in the book).

I would have given this film a 5 instead of a 7 if it was not for the superb talents of Jennifer Lawrence & the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Their performances arguably carry the story and do not falter throughout the duration of the movie. Hoffman’s intellectual and shockingly comedic portrayal of Plutarch Heavensbee is yet another reminder of what a great character actor who we have lost and who will miss in the foreseeable future.

This movie includes a solid soundtrack and outstandingly realistic special effects. If you have enjoyed the acting and the characters you will like this movie. If you didn't like Mockingjay the book try out this feature because it may as I found surpass your expectations. This movie has at the very least made me want to rush to see the final film which I suppose was its primary function as a studio cash grab.

Even now I think that this time next year when the final movie of the Hunger Games has come and gone I may even be a little upset when I come to realize that it is all over.

Remember Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, were nothing really exciting happens in that movie, and the movie has a slow paste run time and they try to save the all the exciting and awesome parts in part 2, and now we gotRemember Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, were nothing really exciting happens in that movie, and the movie has a slow paste run time and they try to save the all the exciting and awesome parts in part 2, and now we got Mockingjay and I can happily say that Mockingjay is a little better than Deathly Hallows Part 1, but it does lack of the two parter thing and this movie is not near from perfect.

Mockingjay Part 1 continues the story has Katniss Everdeen along with Peeta Mellark, and a handful of other survivors, have successfully escaped the Quarterquell thanks to helps from Haymitch Abernathy and former gamemaster Plutarch Heavensbee. But escaping is just the start, as Katniss finds herself having to embrace the symbol she has become to the people of Panem - a symbol of rebellion against President Snow and the autocratic Capitol.

I was really looking forward to Mockingjay, because I thought the squeal (Catching Fire) was a big improvement and just overall a better movie then the first one. The trailer to Mockingjay won me over by it's excellent tone and it's brilliant shots, and I was actually counting down the days for the movie release, but now after seeing the film I got to say.... I'm a bit disappointing. Now let me get something out there, I don't hate this movie, I just think it's really disappointing for and please don't hate me for this.

Let's start off with the good things in this movie: Jennifer Lawrence was just flawless in this movie and now every time I see her in interviews or new movies I straight away like her as a person and as a actress. Rest of the cast did good as well. The movie had that Apocalypse settings to it and it suited the tone of the film and I'm just happy they got that right.

Now for the things that did not work at all and came off messy: The fact that this is a two parter really spoils the film for me, because without giving away anything, but basically this movie is just a set up for the next film and sometimes movies can pull that off, but when the the second part comes out not a lot really of people won't be talking about part 1 anymore, just like Harry Potter and I know I keep bring up Potter a lot but it's really hard not to.

The movies pasting is like watching a snail starting walking to point A to point B, that's the movies paste right there. The movie really wants me to care about the character's and the character's may not be boring, but there not really that interesting to me.

Overall Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 feels less then a stand alone film, but more of a cash grab and I hate saying that because I really wanted to like this and I trying my damn best, but I'm sorry for letting you all down but this movie was a disappointing to me and saying that sucks.

As a result, these things are done absolutley beautifully, with heartfelt moments and some serious themes explored in so many thought out and well directed ways. This also means it's all very well set up for part 2, plus it's very well shot and doesn't feel too stretched out for a 'part 1 film.'
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: It only focuses on two things, so is a touch boring in terms of any plot. Also, tension builds constantly with no real climax, partly due to the lack of action or exciting and defiant scenes (which is supposedly so that we go and see part 2.) One little gripe too is that the soundtrack is a bit weird in places - though music and chants are used powerfully throughout
VERDICT: This sets up part 2 beautifully, but as a film on it's own it struggles to grab excitement from audiences. Having said that, what's there is done brilliantly, it just feels like there could be more.

Expand

It is kind of boring, and only half a movie. This is the first in the series without the actual Hunger Games, and it does it well. It just needs to be one movie.

This film is exactly what it needs to be, and it is extremely underrated. It is not dull, it is dark, gritty, emotional, captivating. Every scene is filled with such raw emotion. Besides from the District 8 scene, everything is directed wonderfully.

Decent, But Big Drop In Quality
Now I understand this is only part 1, But this should’ve been better written in all honesty, But I still liked the film at least 72% of the time.

Joan of Arc gets all the peasants united or something? The Hunger Games are over and this more a war movie now, but it still worked so.

Back in 2010 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 started a dangerous trend — splitting novel adaptations into multiple parts.

Since then we’ve seen the Twilight series split its finale in two and (unforgivably) J.R.R Tolkien’s 300 page ‘The Hobbit’ turned into a three film, nine hour epic.

So how does the latest entry in The Hunger Games franchise fare? To be honest, I think its pretty good.

After two films of build up the oppressed people of Panem are finally taking up arms against a brutal, totalitarian regime led by Donald Sutherland’s President Snow.

So you’d expect a lot of large scale action right? Na, we do get a lot of propaganda though.

Here the Battle Royale style ‘games’ take a back seat as the two political entity’s battle for the hearts and minds of the population.

The ideology of war and the effects of state run media are not often the subject of mainstream Hollywood films. To me however this has always been the most interesting element of the franchise, one that elevates it above the teenage, love triangle, blockbuster it is often dismissed as. I mean these films are so overtly political at this point that its even starting to negatively effect the box office takings in key worldwide markets.

So does all this politics and propaganda make the film boring? Absolutely not. Jennifer Lawrence’s performance once again brings real emotion and depth to Katniss demanding empathy despite some tricky (and at times downright unlikeable) character traits.

The extended running time also allows some of the series’ side characters to have some much needed development. Liam Hemsworth’s Gale and Elizabeth Banks’ Effie finally get scenes of their own, free from Katniss, where they can establish their own motivations and backgrounds.

The returning cast also up their game. Josh Hutcherson is fantastic as Peeta (despite reduced screen time) showing real restraint when needed in scenes a lesser actor would overplay. Of course Donald Sutherland is on fine menacing form as President Snow.

The only disappointment in terms of performance is the late, great, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Don’t get me wrong, he’s great, it just seems he's a little underused. It's a shame that what would turn out to be his final screen role is that of the rather subdued Plutarch Heavensbee. This is hardly a defining or particularly memorable posthumous role like Heath Ledgers Joker or Oliver Reed in Gladiator. Of course the filmmakers can’t be criticised for this and they show Hoffman the upmost respect, dedicating the film to his memory.

Unfortunately much like The Deathly Hallows, Mockingjay Part 1 can’t escape the feeling of being connective tissue and not a film in its own right. This instalment could quite fairly be accused of simply being a two hour trailer for next years’ conclusion. It’s impossible not to see the irony in a film with a quite Marxist message (the downtrodden proletariat rising up against a powerful ruling class) being split in half by a Hollywood elite for commercial gain.

But politics and commercialism aside, the fact remains that Mockingjay-Part 1 is a well made, well acted movie. In all honesty it probably shouldn’t exist but, as it does, there are far worse and less thought provoking ways to spend a couple of hours.

There is less flamboyant action, because it tries and more often than not succeeds in telling a story about the things which make a revolution work like myth building and sacrifice and propaganda. These are unusual themes for a movie aimed at a younger audience. This movie and the last one in this series make it the best example of this particular genre. Expand
