Expand

It's like watching a classic action film which that's what I liked. The movie goes downhill for me like in the middle of the film. For example when he was going to buy the guns and turns out that he kills the two guys. That scene dropped for me. But one good thing that saved this film before I almost hated it is the suspense and the surprises that I got. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this based on the glowing reception of so many paid critics (many listed here⬅️) It started off promising. But the transition to total looney bin psychotic now I'm going to kill the people who took me in seemed to hinge on one line of dialogue. (Paraphrasing) He was part of a group of military men that they did tests on. Are you serious? That's it!.? Big thanks I didn't audibly fart at that very moment or I might have been lost in the story's conclusion. (Yes, that was sarcasm)

On the plus side Dan Stevens was convincing from start to stop. Something felt legitimately off from his very first smile. His revelation from defenders of the defenseless to just plain balls out crazy off his rocker was truly scary to watch. It's a shame 10-15 min of back story wasnt invested in us. Could have elevated this promising idea and performance from saturday afternoon special (if there ever was one like this) to friday night must see chiller. This is truly a thriller movie with the veneer of action movie trailers finished with a dollop of horror. Or just a thriller totally off the rails In the end.

It's kind of a silly horror film, but definitely watchable. I felt like it was missing something to elevate it beyond the obvious, and I could think of a few plot twists that would have given it more emotional depth.

The Guest is a film that tries to be part thriller, part horror movie and part drama. Unfortunately it fails on all counts.
The movie starts off well enough, introducing the main characters and some exposition to let the audience filter into the actual premise of the narrative.
But it tails off very quickly, becoming a very tired and cliche-ridden spectacle that is entertaining enough.... Yet ultimately unfulfilling.
The cast is very good, with Dan Stevens in particular eating up the screen as the Soldier who becomes 'the guest' at the home of the Peterson family due to his being a close army buddy of their dead son who dies overseas.
The direction is fairly by the book, and offers a kind of retro feel to the 'horror' elements, there are very few of the modern 'jump scares' that seem to have permeated horror flicks in the new Millenium.
What was disappointing (to me anyway) was the musical score, it was terribly bad. Generic, almost library style,suspense/shock/horror tropes everyone has heard a million times before in some form or other. The licensed music wasn't my cup of tea, a niche-style I couldn't even try to put a genre name to, just made the final scene (which played the 'main' track very loudly!!) difficult to watch due to the distraction.

Overall, it's not an unwatchable film by any means. I think it would have been better if it had embraced its horror elements more wholeheartedly, and dropped some of the drama parts.

First half of the movie was great, but have to ruined everything later. All in all, it's fun to watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Maybe it was the seeing trailer which spoiled too much for me. The first part of the movie starts well, given the outcome and if I haven't seen the trailer if would have felt really surprising about what happens next, but most scenes felt predictable. Also, spoilers ahead, I would have rated it around 7 if not for the stupid plot points towards the end - with the kid thinking the guy is his friends so not bothering about him being a killer and snitching on his sister - that was just what the F - made the kid look completely dumb suddenly. Ok if that kid would be very very young or something, but he was at age where should understand risks here. And then towards end when the special forces or whatever came to get the main guy - they go at their house and shoot it up, without caring that inside there are innocent people. Like as easily it couldve been that he didn't kill them, but the bullet strayed and killed the woman. Yes he was meant to kill everyone and leave no trace eventually - but at that point he did not know yet, that they are coming and haven't started doing any of that. For me they could've pulled it off better and made it much more interesting overall. If not for these parts, I would give it 7. With this - 5 Expand
