And man, was I in for a surprise. I mean, this is truly one of the best movies that I have ever seen, and one that I will tell all my friends to watch. The tension and the unique atmosphere it builds is truly remarkable, the lead actor who I never even heard of before gave an astonishing performance. And don't even get me started on the soundtrack. The Guest is a fast, fun, action packed thriller and the final act is one of the best in recent years. Stylish, slick, well-acted, and well-shot, you can tell that the filmmakers put a lot of heart into it.

Dan Stevens oozes cool from every pore and I just want to climb inside his body and be him. The synthwave music is very well done, kicking in nicely to build up the tension leading up to climactic scenes. The whole thing has an old-school 70's feel about it. The acting is superb and the action scenes are well filmed and intense. The film keeps you guessing right up until the last minute so the pacing from start to finish is spot on.

It's good to see these quirky little films still being made, especially with some known faces in them. More like this please Mr Director man

Adam Wingard the director of this movie Previously did: You're Next and the short films from V/H/S 1&2, but now he direct's his new film The Guest and this is one of his best.

The story is about a soldier comes the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. But as a series of accidental deaths occurs, the welcomed man soon turns into a suspect.

Before seeing this movie I known nothing about it. I haven't heard anyone talking about it so I pretty much went in with a open mind knowing nothing, and after viewing I can say that The Guest is freaking amazing and brilliantly flawless with one of the best soundtracks I heard since the 2011 movie Drive.

Dan Stevens did a outstanding performance as the nice guy that has a dark and uneasy side to him, which Stevens nailed that and I would love to see him in more movies. The rest of the cast did really good as well.

The soundtrack in this movie is just so beautiful to listen to, and it may be the best soundtrack I've heard since Drive and all John Carpenter movie soundtrack. The soundtrack had that 80's and 90's nostalgic feeling to it which made the movie and the soundtrack even more awesome. No words can describe it, it should be viewed by people who love nostalgic music and movie lovers.

The cinematography and the writing in the movie was just top notch and this has to be the biggest surprises of the year for me, because I wasn't expecting how fantastic and well done it was. I'm not going to give it the perfect rating as I thought I was going to give, because I don't this movie was "The best movie ever made", no it's really not, but still this movie is awesome.

Expand

Luckily, The Guest has the luxury of having suave lead actor and good atmosphere for a thriller. Some of the kinks are predictable, but the dark humor as well as bizarre revelations offer much needed novelty to the movie.

David (Dan Stevens) arrives at the Petersons resident, claiming that he was a friend of their fallen son. He's well-mannered and seems trustworthy, thus the family welcomes him openly. Upon his stay, strange accidents begin to happen, and suspicion arises with the casualties. The most important hook is Dan Stevens' portrayal of David. He looks like a rugged debonair, this is not average smooth, this is Ryan Gosling's level of smoothness.

Stevens delivers a wide variety of emotions, he can be either friendly or deadly. Backed by good cast, such as Maika Monroe as the Anna Peterson and Lance Reddick as Mayor Carver, the movie has a solid degree on acting performance. The exchange of banter is enjoyable, often resulting in manipulation or downright violence for David’s benefit. It elevates the human drama between him, the Peterson family and whoever unlucky enough to be in their immediately vicinity.

Mystery of David's real identity is crafted slowly and it's compelling enough to pique interest without revealing too much. The film also has a touch of humor, albeit slightly crude. Strangely, in the third act it changes tone drastically for the climax. This shift is a bit odd considering it plays the thriller aspect with steady pace for the majority of early parts, although this explosive tone does have the merit of being entertaining.

There are short bursts of Hollywood style carnage, but they are modest, not all out gunblazing from the start like Bourne or the recent John Wick. Action sequences are well choreographed, it has both devastating and ridiculous impact.. Good practical effect for the blood and explosion as well as its highly unorthodox soundtracks make the faster pace scenes more satisfying.

Having good mesh of action, mystery and comedy, The Guest is enigmatically fascinating.

Combined, they manage to borderline scare you, while also thrilling you with some killer action sequences and numerous twists and turns that both reveal and confuse things further. Dan Stevens is fantastic in the lead role, while Maika Monroe turns in a supporting performance that provides further proof of her brilliance. This film really manages to heighten suspense throughout and has a chilling coolness that both pulls you in and scares you that really underscores how cold and calculated everything done in the film is. In addition, the film is also really shot and has some great production design and the final act as a whole is brilliant and wraps the film up brilliantly. Overall, The Guest is a very good film that deserves far more attention than it has received. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I watched this based on the glowing reception of so many paid critics (many listed here⬅️) It started off promising. But the transition to total looney bin psychotic now I'm going to kill the people who took me in seemed to hinge on one line of dialogue. (Paraphrasing) He was part of a group of military men that they did tests on. Are you serious? That's it!.? Big thanks I didn't audibly fart at that very moment or I might have been lost in the story's conclusion. (Yes, that was sarcasm)

On the plus side Dan Stevens was convincing from start to stop. Something felt legitimately off from his very first smile. His revelation from defenders of the defenseless to just plain balls out crazy off his rocker was truly scary to watch. It's a shame 10-15 min of back story wasnt invested in us. Could have elevated this promising idea and performance from saturday afternoon special (if there ever was one like this) to friday night must see chiller. This is truly a thriller movie with the veneer of action movie trailers finished with a dollop of horror. Or just a thriller totally off the rails In the end.

The movie's twist could put some people with closed senses down, but for movie lovers and people who enjoyed the 80's action thrillers and horror movies it could not be better. The soundtrack is superb and it matches the tone of Dan Stevens's character "David", the fight scenes are really well done without silly shaky cameras and the action scenes are realistic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Awesome theme to the movie...."burn down their houses with their families inside"......but what really makes it awesome is that the cast is perfect. Though the movie seemed like it could have been made in the time it takes to burn a cd....i still had no trouble believing it was going to have a huge third act....even though i like music ive never heard before.....i still feel that david was almost too cool to hurt the family and i would have preferred to see him just help out one last time.....but i guess he taught the kid to save his sister-not something i would do.. It's kind of a silly horror film, but definitely watchable. I felt like it was missing something to elevate it beyond the obvious, and I could think of a few plot twists that would have given it more emotional depth.

The Guest is a film that tries to be part thriller, part horror movie and part drama. Unfortunately it fails on all counts.
The movie starts off well enough, introducing the main characters and some exposition to let the audience filter into the actual premise of the narrative.
But it tails off very quickly, becoming a very tired and cliche-ridden spectacle that is entertaining enough.... Yet ultimately unfulfilling.
The cast is very good, with Dan Stevens in particular eating up the screen as the Soldier who becomes 'the guest' at the home of the Peterson family due to his being a close army buddy of their dead son who dies overseas.
The direction is fairly by the book, and offers a kind of retro feel to the 'horror' elements, there are very few of the modern 'jump scares' that seem to have permeated horror flicks in the new Millenium.
What was disappointing (to me anyway) was the musical score, it was terribly bad. Generic, almost library style,suspense/shock/horror tropes everyone has heard a million times before in some form or other. The licensed music wasn't my cup of tea, a niche-style I couldn't even try to put a genre name to, just made the final scene (which played the 'main' track very loudly!!) difficult to watch due to the distraction.

Overall, it's not an unwatchable film by any means. I think it would have been better if it had embraced its horror elements more wholeheartedly, and dropped some of the drama parts.

what an interesting movie, started out as a questionable house guest movie, then.... Not your blockbuster big ticket movie, as evident in the script, which sometimes doesn't make sense, but passable.

First half of the movie was great, but have to ruined everything later. All in all, it's fun to watch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first part of the movie was great. Like really great. The "feelgood" feeling was totally there. Now when i realised he was a bit shady, our main character, i kinda got the feeling of how this was gonna go. Now, the movie still keeps me hooked until our little princess wants to investigate by herself. First this military lady hangs up, for so to "Google" the guy just second later. It took her literally 2.5 sec to check him, and she says "ill call you back when i have some information". Not to mention how she forgets to warn about this dangerous man, and by the way that cringy ass message on the screen. CMON. That triggered me. A lot of more **** "policework" made by this girl causing our shady guy to realise sht, depressing. Aaaaaand then comes the cliche "supersecretoperation" kinda **** Our superagent manages to do some superagent magic and boom he is on his way. Fair enough. The "action" scene is so damn depressing i considered pressing STOP and leave. Seriously. No creativity, the "agents" either got told to look like complete fckups or didnt know how to handle a gun, unrealistic reactiontime from our fellow "contractors" too, *car breaks garage* *agent looking in the window* *looks at the garage* *realise our super dangerous man is in the car wich now by the way is outside, stopped and gun pointed towards him* *tries turn* *Contractor dramtic death*. What professional contractor even uses full auto, and manage to empty their mags at the EXACT same time. brooo. Those people wouldve died to a pig in Minecraft. I know there are those who would fire with the "its a movie" bull****, but i looks like a bollywood homemade amateur epic gangster war about some sugary **** obviously our guy makes it out alive and fix a few things. Our FBI megatron, as the last man alive, makes it to this damn girl and says she has to come with him. She, as i wouldve done too, started to ask questions and he just goes on saying something along the lines of "i am full-black-super-uniform-man so just follow me for no reason you wont regret it". Piece of dumb ass script. Like five hours later after a lot of unneccesary damn drama she get told that her parents are dead. LIKE HOLY SHT JUST TELL HER THAT YOU DUMB PIECE OF. now. Then they get to her brother *fbi guy dies* and she tries to run and when our little boy doesnt want she goes on with the **** "you have to trust me" BULLL****! LIKE! JUST TELL HIM HIS PARENTS ARE DEAD AND HE NEED TO GET THE FCKKKK OUT OF THERE!!!!! I am still angry. Started good, FBI got involved and turned it all into a big bag of poo. Seriously. bye. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Maybe it was the seeing trailer which spoiled too much for me. The first part of the movie starts well, given the outcome and if I haven't seen the trailer if would have felt really surprising about what happens next, but most scenes felt predictable. Also, spoilers ahead, I would have rated it around 7 if not for the stupid plot points towards the end - with the kid thinking the guy is his friends so not bothering about him being a killer and snitching on his sister - that was just what the F - made the kid look completely dumb suddenly. Ok if that kid would be very very young or something, but he was at age where should understand risks here. And then towards end when the special forces or whatever came to get the main guy - they go at their house and shoot it up, without caring that inside there are innocent people. Like as easily it couldve been that he didn't kill them, but the bullet strayed and killed the woman. Yes he was meant to kill everyone and leave no trace eventually - but at that point he did not know yet, that they are coming and haven't started doing any of that. For me they could've pulled it off better and made it much more interesting overall. If not for these parts, I would give it 7. With this - 5 Expand

The main character, David,This is a mystery thriller film, featuring themes including drug dealing, harassment and bar fights. It is quite atmospheric, with a spooky or otherwise mildly sinister tone to it from relatively early on. The main character, David, seems...not quite right, like he's holding in a fair bit of anger. This obviously means that he's quite volatile and it doesn't take long for the viewer to realise this is someone with a seemingly shady past, who keeps himself to himself but isn't afraid to fight his corner when he deems necessary. Volatile is probably the key word when it comes to this film.

Cast wise, the main character, David, is played by Dan Stevens. This film reminded me of another show I've seen him in, a very strange and peculiar US show called Legion. It has to be said, he seems to do particularly well playing such mysterious, volatile people. Other cast members include Maika Monroe, who plays Anna Peterson, the daughter in the household that David finds himself in, while Brendan Meyer plays the son, Luke and the parents (Laura and Spencer Peterson) are played by Sheila Kelley and Leland Orser respectively.

Music wise, there are a number of somewhat spaced-out, electronic type pieces played. I don't think I'd heard them before but they are somewhat niche sounding - they certainly heightened the sense of tension and intrigue during the scenes they feature in. Some examples of tracks played, according to IMDB.com, include Hourglass by Survive, Omniverse by Survive, Storm Column by Gatekeeper and Emma by The Sisters of Mercy. I felt that elements of it, including the visual style as well as the music featured in a number of scenes, gave it a sort of a daydream (or, should I say, nightmare) angle. It seemed to me to have something of a 1980s neon horror/thriller look to it - there are horror type elements but I wouldn't specifically classify it as a horror per se, as there are a fair few non-violent and non-gorey scenes.

Content wise, the film contains sex references (including homophobic terms/hate crime terminology), partial nudity, moderate to strong violence including gunfire and hand to hand combat type violence, with bloody injuries shown, hence a fair amount of blood spatter is displayed. There is, of course, strong language and there are scenes depicting drug taking. Apart from that, the film is quite dark in tone generally and could frighten or otherwise disturb younger viewers.

This isn't the kind of film where you can say a great deal about it without giving away spoilers, hence why I'm keeping this relatively short, which hopefully you understand. I found it quite an engrossing watch and it seemed to me a good mystery thriller film. I suppose, thinking in terms of criticisms, the plot isn't entirely original - the whole 'random stranger appears and turns out to not be entirely who he says he is' plot idea isn't exactly brand new but it was a good watch regardless. Regarding the 'some plot aspects' disadvantage that I note, that is because I found myself feeling rather sceptical of some plot elements but I won't disclose them so as not to give away spoilers. Suffice to say, some of what comes to light and what happens in the 2nd half seemed a little too over exaggerated. I wouldn't say it made the film not at all entertaining all the same though.

Yes, I'd recommend this film as I found it to be quite engrossing, atmospheric and the plot intrigued me for a fair while. It isn't perfect, with the main plot a bit unoriginal and some of the plot details seemed a bit unrealistic but overall its a decent mystery/thriller type film, so I'd recommend it on this basis.

David: Those kids at school, are they bigger than you?

Luke Peterson: Yeah. David: Then bring a knife to school. If they take it off you and beat you up, you go around their houses at night and burn them down with their families inside.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think that we all saw through this plot from the beginning, like the writer looked up “what makes a good thriller” and stole every trope from the list: family weakened by the loss of a loved one, bad guy preys on said family, black man saves the day - or at least tries to, and finally the girl who knew what was up the whole time takes the bad guy down in a showdown in a made up “funny house” with the hall of mirrors, blinking lights, etc. The only redeeming quality is the the music - which is why it got 1 star from me, dawg.
