The story is effectively about a man who never fully grew up. He maintains a childlike outlook despite being forced to handle adult responsibilities, possibly because he had to face those responsibilities too early. There are flaws though. The end was too abrupt and each scene felt disconnected. This needed to go harder on the movie treatment and lighter on theatre.

I saw some people who were complaining that he"s meant to be a good guy. I think people need to start learning about what makes a character. He's a protagonist and a likable one. But a perfectly good protagonist is a poorly written protagonist. This protagonist is very flawed. He makes bad choices, but you're meant to remain hopeful. This character is strongly rooted in his humanity. He isn't a hero.

I liked the scene with Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron singing and dancing at a bar I think?. Its a bit of a corny watch and I felt a little uncomfortable with the exploitation aspect but I enjoyed the musical aspect and I imagine it did look pretty good on a large screen. The Greatest Showman is a “biography” about P.T Barnum. The music is subpar but the film is interesting enough to keep you engaged. Hugh Jackman did a fantastic job playing Barnum. Overall, the film was pretty good, but nothing special.

Amazing movie, amazing songs, didn't see such a great movie in years!
This was magnificent piece of art, music and deep story. The actors did a perfect job. The songs were so amazing. I really liked that not every sentence was delivered by singing, but that there were just regular speaking parts and songs between. So even if you are not into musicals its very good movie for you. The songs and the energy in them were just awesome. There was not even a second where I would feel bored or not entertained. The story is amazing as well. Although some people may say the main character is in real life not as amazing as in the movie or was just selling not a real truth, well I am here not to judge, everyone has his opinion and no matter how it was, I just take it as it was inspired by some person with a great idea and its not documentary about his life so as a movie if its totally true or not, I dont think it matters. As a movie the story was amazing and very deep. I think everyone should see this movie. I wanted to watch it again right away after it finished.

Extremely uplifting and enjoyable movie about enduring through hard times with dreams of success in the entertainment industry.

I only could see negative about this movie that it wasn't based on true story, and I guess many who ended up giving a bad vote are audience of Honest Trailers who have to find every single fault of any movie and ridicule it, easy for you to do when all your content is basically recycling criticism as if it was discovered yesterday.

Every movie has its own faults and in the internet age everyone has gotten so hyper critical about everything even as shiny as this movie was on it's performance and music, it still got a large sum of people who were upset about music and plot. This is the same audience who praises old movies like American Pie because it was born before internet age because it happens to have 1 nude scene, the same audience who went to watch all of the sequels because you guessed it, boobs.

Get a **** reality check everyone. This movie deserves at least 8.5 score.

If movie like Fifth Element was made today it would receive audience score of 6 if not worse, but because it's old classic it has to be rated ~9, you got to be joking me.

You want me to tear down Fifth Element to pieces?

1. Plot takes forever to take place after first introduction.

2. The smaller main villain looks ridiculous with his fake plastic face. Looks like the suit was made in 10 minutes after knitting few curtain cloths together. The guy almost choked himself. 3. The world is saved by some retired special forces guy because apparently world has run out of special forces units...?

4. First action for everything, lets just shoot at it.

5. Priests are still a thing in year 3000.

6. How isn't the military aware of the ancients and their technology? I thought military was supposed to be aware of dangers that could expose humankind to destruction?

I mean military even warns about damage caused by climate change and it's not really their specialty.

7. The fact this supposed super weapon to defeat evil has to be located on earth... for some strange reason.

8. Why does every scifi movie have to be some ends day doom scenario that ends the world?

9. Artificially build tension for last seconds. I kinda get how the main bad guy is a planet and everything. But whole reason why the planet was forming so far out of solar system was just to build the tension of it reaching earth where world could be ended if the plant just formed couple seconds closer to earth.

If you look at Fifth Element it has all the stereotypical plot devices from action movie where bomb is replaced by the super weapon, time is replaced by how close the planet is, main villains are your stereotypical bad guys who just want to harm people, every movie has some average Joe Nobody who used to be though guy return to service just for 1 last mission while he's struggling with his private life. Scifi is just there for added spice into the movie, but over 50% of the scifi is just added annoyance that's not even pleasing to watch.

Just for example the Ruby Rhod who is this outspoken black guy with weird hair is just a comedic relief where everyone goes like "yeah show that talking head that guns go boom, he so scared", where have we seen this before? Pretty much every single action movie where some person watching the show is out of touch of how the real world operates, gets shown by the main hero how the "real world" operates, further progressing the idea that a nerd who doesn't solve his problems with violence is somehow weak individual while some barking dog who punches every guy who doesn't please him is a though good guy who fights for the weak, it's not like world is brainwashed by the media enough, the movie just propagates bad messages all over the place.

-

So yeah it's easy for anyone to break the ice and find problems on every single movie, unless it's literally documentary, and even then there's probably problem with pacing for some individuals, just look how poor reviews the First Man got (7.4/10) from Metacritic.

I guess only way to reach above 9 score is to embrace brainless entertainment these days and have a joke every 10 minutes otherwise audience of mouth breathing 10 year olds get bored.

And then people criticize why Marvel is always making their movies so deliberately unserious, well when you get a serious movies like the Infinity War 1 or 2, they get immediately criticized for minor details or not having enough action or there being too much action.

Take a **** step back already from your ivory towers of criticism and ask yourself how would you make the movie any better and how many would be willing to pay to watch it?

If you actually would want to watch something new, well it's been tried many many times and nearly everyone in the audience HATED IT, as this movie clearly shows.

All the music sounded the same to my ears, just a lot of over the top, trying to be awe inspiring, key changing drudgery.
Music aside, for a movie about a "Great" show, we never really saw any of the actual show until the very end. Most of the time that there is a shot of the show, it is just a group of people doing Michael Jackson type dancing and singing about how great the show is. The characters and story telling were shallow and basic. Overall just a bit boring and pointless.

They can't stopOkay, like other musicals like Oliver, Grease, Footloose and many more, they are bursting to go see a musical in cinemas when they saw the trailers of it. The result would be The Greatest Showman and they love it to death. They can't stop singing the songs and they can't stop talking about it. I mean, love it, I mean, obsessed. Someone has recommending me to watch it and you know what? I did. And I gotta say that I love it and I gotta say that the songs are really impressive. I still gotta say that I'm not a huge gigantic fan of the new songs that people have put out in Capital FM and many other radio's. I can tell now that they don't make the songs sound old fashioned anymore at least sometimes. Much like the live-action Beauty and the Beast, the songs make this movie the highlight. Hugh Jackman is great as P. T. Barnum and Zac Efron is once again doing a musical since High School Musical and Hairspray. They're both fantastic in this. Did you know that the idea of this is when Hugh Jackman is singing at the beginning of the Oscars in 2009? Well, I know that after I've finished the film. The Greatest Showman is something that many people cannot stop talking about and singing the songs and is something that is recommended for people who are hugest fans of musicals like I am. The songs are very memorable and my favourite song out of all of them is got to be "From Now On". Don't you just love Hugh Jackman's singing voice? And the dancing is great and you can't go wrong here. The only flaw the movie has is the fact that the critics didn't like it mostly getting mixed reviews but for me, I have absolutely no idea. You can tell that Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert are not around anymore. So anyways, it's very well choreographed and crafted and a dream come true for everyone who's got the album. Hey, hopefully they'll make a musical play out of it. Expand

I don't know why this movie gets so much of appreciation by the people. It's just another generic musical. Oh yeah, Hugh Jackman is there and Zac Efron is there, and oh wait, some good songs - okay that's why. .
.
Good : Before all the whining I am about to proceed with, I do have to admit that Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron were really good in this movie. The song "This is me" accurately describes the feeling of "freaks" in the movie and a lot of such people the real Barnum exploited. The songs were very interesting to say the least and are quite hummable and memorable. There is a good character development for P. T. Barnum. And if you're to believe what they show about Barnum in this and if you love any kind of musical served to you - generic or not, you'll most probably love the movie. But that's where the negatives come. More on that later. .
.
Mixed : The songs are good, I like them a lot. But, some are quite forced as if they were like "hey we have to, have to put a song here" and the song comes out too awkwardly. And, most of the songs are accurate as per the situation in the movie, but they could've come out in a much better way. .
.
Bad : First and foremost, this is a completely false characterization of P. T. Barnum. The real P. T. Barnum was a pathetic SOB. For no good reason, it tries damn hard to show that he actually was a great person, and doesn't even acknowledging him as a promoter of blackface minstrelsy. That's a great guy, a racist. Okay, let this be and let's accept that at least in the film, we must accept him as a good guy - who always wanted to impress everyone around him. He was clearly not, even in the movie. Though movie doesn't really show how bad the man really was, it portrays him as a selfish guy, many times. And yet, we need to accept him as a good guy? The third act of this movie is a perfect example of a typical clichéd ending. Every "freak" comes back to Barnum for the most generic reasons which could've been backed up with some good plotlines. There is character development of Barnum, but why was he so selfish, way too many times (even though we are to take him as a really good guy)? Was it pride? Was it obsession? Was it proving oneself right by any means (just like this movie does by claiming the movie version of Barnum is a great guy, even though he is very selfish at many times - was this movie metacinematic, btw?)? I still don't know. And I don't even wish to. .
.
Conclusion : On the whole, if I overlook the real Barnum thing, it's just another cheesy musical (which actually is a biopic but doesn't feel like one) with some good soundtrack and if I don't overlook it, the movie is a wrongly done biopic. .
.

This movie felt like a total chore to watch at first but after the first act it picked up really fast and started to be entertaining and hearth warming and dramatic at the same time, as the story started to break off in to smaller plots. It was very well executed from this point of view. The cinematography, directing style where a masterpiece. This really is a piece of art if we are to consider the musical elements only. But sadly the immersion was not on point and the musical performances broke off all the story and immersion once it started growing. The plot was not very deep but it was well done. The actors however where the true stars with their performances on the characters assigned to them and all the singing and very frame perfect choreographed dance scene. The romance was definitely there in it's strong element as they showed forbidden love from multiple angles, and not all happy endings. Somehow the the ending was not cheesy nor cliche which is weird, but it proves that this was a very well cared movie even with all of it's really big faults.
Overall this was a good movie but it could have been a lot better if where more immersive and entertaining. Ohh yeas and the practical visuals where amazing as well, and the stunts executed where mind blowing. Props for the stunt men!

Depending on how much you know of his history, it may seem too kind. Anyways, I took it for what it was, a fun musical telling a fairy tale like story that makes references to some historical events and selected pieces of history. It's entertaining, has catchy songs, and has a very surreal musical feel, modern pop music with a very vibrant period piece look. Its idealistic show business telling a story of.. idealistic show business dreams.. fun meta conversations to be had after watching! I can't say my top value is showing off or appearing different.. looks are not everything.. this seems to be a show that tries very hard to look good which also saying that we shouldn't judge by looks.. but then we need to appreciate and be entertained by people that look or are different? Don't think to hard about it and you may enjoy it more.. which is probably how one could to view the circus as well. Expand

The Greatest Showman is as inspiring is it is fun, if you just give in to the fact that you're not going to watch a on point description of the life of P.T. Barnum. The music and songs that comes with it make it a movie worth watching again. The main flaw, and the reason I can't give it an even higher grade, is the extreme tempo in which the story is being told. Put one extra hour in, even 30/45 minutes to create some depth and better explain some of the details in the story, and this could have become an instant classic. Hugh Jackman did pretty much everything right, and there is still no better actor in Hollywood to play the role of dancing, singing, acting multitalent than Zac Efron. Time for him to step in an Academy Award worthy role. In all, a very good movie, that could have been great with a little more patience and a little less rush. Expand

O elenco tambem é bom e Hugo Jackman supreendeu-me imenso neste papel pela positiva.

Aspectos Negativos: Nada a resalvar.

The Greatest Showman is aThe Greatest Showman is not, per se, historically accurate in the portrayal of P.T Barnum’s history. However, anybody who looks for this in a “feel-good” film should have never spent their money on this, anyways. The Greatest Showman is a musical, packed with firey songs and strong characters. The main character, played by Hugh Jackman, is a typical rags-to-riches man born into poverty and rocketed into stardom after starting his own circus. His performers are people he took off the streets - people the citizens of the town call “freaks” due to their unsightly appearances. It is with these people that P.T Barnum ascends to stardom, but it is not without consequence. Mobbers, protestors, and rioters aim to destroy the circus once and for all, enraged that “freaks” are given the spotlight. Through the whole movie, the viewer will watch P.T Barnum bring rises and falls into the lives of his family. P.T, at one point, realizes his own greed and sorrow after something drastic changes his carreer. At that point, he remembers that his goal was to make a better life for his family, and goes to make things right with the “Freaks”, all of which he had neglected after finding a star singer to perform on tour and give the audience “something real”.

All in all, The Greatest Showman is a feel-good film. Its music is firey and sure to make you dance, but that’s just about all the film is good for. You’re wrapped up in a spectacle from beginning to end, and while the film does play with your heart a little bit, you might be a little less likely to write home about The Greatest Showman’s storyline after you discover P.T Barnum’s multiple selfish moves.

Anyways, I love this movie so much and the critics were really harsh on this movie. I love this movie so much and the songs are super catchy. The plot line isn't like the actual real life story. I mean its a movie, come on guys it's not a big deal! The dances and the choreography was quite decent. My children loved the movie so much and I loved the movie so much! It will be one of my favorites!! Some parts made P.T. Barnum seem like a good guy but in real life he wasn't the best man. I did like what they turned P.T. Barnum! I don't mind that the whole story in the movie isn't based of the true story. If it was then it would be a really depressing musical and that would be a thumbs down. My overall review would be that I really really liked the movie and I feel that you should do, the songs are super catchy and get stuck in your head. The story had some inspiration and some romance (no sexual scenes) the movie is great for kids. P.S. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS IS THE OTHER SIDE BY THE WAY! Expand

Yeah, it is kinda a norm now in pop music because of "singing boobs" performance - but w.t.f. are pop songs doing in a musical about 19th century? I don't mind some, but not all of them surely? You can do modern-ish musical numbers in that setting, watch Sweeney Todd for example.

If Hugh Jackman can't sing, why not just lip-sync to a real singer instead of producing a robot voice.

so what's your act..

The Greatest Showman

Its short runtime sweeps away swiftly by one's eyes with the charm of its musical numbers, witty choreography and stunning background score but as far as execution is concerned the makers seems careless about the quality offered resulting into a shallow emotional drama that fails to connect the audience. Michael Gracey; the director, is not in his A game and seems a bit distracted from his objective and focuses more on the razzle dazzle that its musical acts brings on the screen. On performance objective, Hugh Jackman has got it covered with a good supporting cast like Michelle Williams and Rebecca Ferguson while Zac Efron and Zendaya still has to go far long down the road. The Greatest Showman might be rich on little aspects like production design, costume, design and of course its soundtrack but what it fails to deliver is a good old tale told with conviction and a genuine soul to invest in it (despite of what Hugh Jackman might say through his performance; he is brilliant in it).

It was entertaining and the characters were pretty entertaining, but it focused more on the glamour than anything. This movie hoodwinked us just like the show hoodwinked its audience. I don't believe that this story was all just wonder, glamour, and singing. We did get to see a little bit of the dirty stuff behind it, such as the social prejudice. The Greatest Showman is, for the most part, good, but it is by no means "great". I came into this movie hoping to be blown away (my friends all gave this moving glowing reviews). Sadly, that is not the case. Although, I did enjoy this movie, what I watched feels like an entirely different movie from what my friends watched. With that, let's talk about what I don't like about this movie.

The movie was entirely forgettable, story-wise, at least. The characters did not shine through at all. The carnies are, ironically, forgettable. I wish they gave these characters more exposition. I hoped that they would be talked about more. Their backstories more elaborate. But, no. By the end of the movie, there were more carnies than ever, and I did not know anyone of them. It's a shame because the movie wants you to sympathize with these people, about being different, yet we don't know who they really are. We don't get to know any of them. The movie is, for the most part, centered on Hugh Jackman. I get it. I know the movie isn't called The Greatest Carnies, but still. Choreography was mediocre. There wasn't anything special about the choreography at all. Nothing new we've seen from previous musicals. Maybe even a downgrade. The songs at least were pretty good and catchy that it kind of diverted attention away from the bland choreography. The parts that I hated were the God-awful CGI. There was one scene in particular, near the end of the movie where I just thought: "Geez. Really guys?". The CGI was so bad, I couldn't believe I was watching that in 2018. Taking all this into consideration, I did have a good time with this movie. It's such a happy-fun time kind of movie. If you just wanna watch a musical and have fun, it's worth a one-time viewing, at least. Although, there were a lot of things that I didn't like with this movie, overall, I did have a good time. The songs were the Hail Mary pass, but did they make it? For the most part, yes.

Hugh Jackman and Zach Efron give decent performances but even the dance sequences are disappointing with them mostly being backflips instead of fancy choreography. While the music is worth a listen on Spotify or Apple Music, it does not contribute enough to the plot and comes off as bland. This oscar bait is best avoided this holiday season. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Greatest Showman was just alright. You will enjoy it at the time... but once you leave the theater, nothing real will stick with you. First, I felt the movie could have had another 20-30 minutes of material added ...plus another song...to really flesh out the characters and their development. It was just too shallow. For example, there is NO explanation why Phillip Carlyle and Ann Wheeler have a relationship beyond their shallow attraction based on looks. Boring. Too many things are glossed over i.e. what bank forecloses on a house based on a newspaper story??? The storyline veers off course in several places and then has to get back on track, awkwardly, which detracts from what could be a great story and a celebration of diversity. Instead, the circus people become an angry group who feel used and ignored by Barnum and, honestly, should have walked out on him and started their own business with Carlyle whilst Barnum was off with Jenny Lind trying to become a respectable member of society. While the songs were great and, honestly, this movie would have sucked without them...there are no truly memorable songs or lines. Seriously. Just think back to great musicals like Singing in the Rain or Funny Girl. There are lines that we can quote "Hello, Gorgeous!" and songs that we are humming after decades -- i.e. "Good Morning" from Singing in the Rain is an orange juice commercial now...there is nothing from The Greatest Showman that I can imagine people singing along to in 70 years. Basically, The Greatest Showman just feels like a Barnum illusion....all smoke and mirrors and nothing real. This was an amazing cast full of talent and promise...but the storyline lacked substance and the story was too disjointed to make a lasting impact. Also, where exactly did the elephant go at the end of the movie when he rode it to meet his wife and daughters? Another illusion... Expand

This aspect along with the film's undeniably confused musical soundscape ultimately made me feel disappointed by the experience, which was frequently laden with groans, scoffs, and face-palms. Sure, the choreography and production design are worth a look, but if you're a musical where only about a third of your songs are 100% bearable, you've got an issue. Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, and Zac Efron give their all, but it's not enough to save a the film from an element that probably never needed to be there in the first place - the whole "musical" element itself. That should in no way dissuade you from seeing this film as it does what it was intended to do, put a smile on your face, and I was smiling from ear to ear the entire time. Definitely a must watch and I am dying to see an extended cut and behind the scenes. Expand

And I use the word “brought” very loosely. The musical that every person has not stopped talking about since Christmas. The musical many people insisted I would actually like. So I almost hate to disappoint you all but I did not like The Greatest Showman. I did not enjoy it and the songs for the most part were not for me.

What better way to celebrate the birth of the circus than in musical format, starring Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and a whole bunch of other people I didn’t bother to look up. Clearly I’m in the minority here as The Greatest Showman has done extremely well for itself. Not only has it made a huge profit but it’s also been Oscar nominated for best original song. Just because I hated it doesn’t mean it hasn’t done something right. I won’t lie, not all the songs are terrible, at least two are well written but the rest made me want to rip my ears off just to make it stop. Who knew there was an audience for the fairy tale version of P.T. Barnum, complete with song after song, auto-tuned to within an inch of its life topped off with some very questionable lip-syncing by some (looking at you Rebecca Ferguson). In a Moulin Rouge-esque style of story telling and dance numbers it soon became sickening. Not to mention the mediocre predictable story and the dodgy CGI. The songs just didn’t stop, after a while I just tried to tune it all out. Hugh Jackman was a good choice and he certainly looks like he’s having fun. There is an audience for The Greatest Showman but obviously I’m not part of it. I felt like the theatre critic in the movie, honestly he was the only character I could relate to. La La Land reminded me that I can enjoy musicals, whereas The Greatest Showman reminded me why I hate them. If you like musicals then you’ll love this but if they’re not your thing then maybe give this one a miss like I should have.

The catchy songs, brilliant sets, great cast and flashy scenes really caught my attention. This movie left me wanting to know more about P.T. Barnum and the people he worked along side with. Unfortunately, many of the events that took place during the film are not exactly historically accurate. All things aside, the lack of historically accuracy did not take away much from the film. The "musical" aspect of the film was not overwhelming and appealed to all people in my party at the theater and not just the musical fans. The story line is simply accompanied with music sung by the cast that is relevant to what is going on in the film. It is not too "Musically". I believe that the movie was beautifully casted and would not look to change much about that. Expand
