P.T Barnum was also racist in real life. He was so unlikable in this movie. I love Broadway and almost every musical. It is like a high school show:
-You like the people in it
-You feel embarassed for them
-You can't stop cringing
Very dissapointing

Michael Gracey is a new, young, first-time director who fails to lead the movie to a clear direction. The songs are great in the theaters, but is too commercialized, without true feelings in the root of the songs. When the actors/actress were singing, it felt like they were playing a soundtrack, instead of the voice coming out from their mouth thanks to the overdone musical production. It's not until the middle of the film that you really able to grasp what the movie is about. Throughout the movie, the plot is divided, empty, and messy. Not to mention that this 'based on true events' movie hid the true dark side of the protagonist - Darnum, who exploited African Americans for his own fame and wealth, which is completely the reverse of the "moral values" of the movie. It might be a good entertainment movie, but failed to do most part decently. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a huge let down. There was not one single original moment here. There are clearly people here that have no clue about Photography. It was dreadful. Everything was so clouded and filtered. The costumes were so uncertain to be authentic or fantasy, terrible either way. The film sets up a scene that we will be meeting the greatest opera singer of the time. What we get is hardly opera but don't ask me what she is meant to be.As for the choreography, did I actually witness moves and steps so out of line with the period.Even the make up was atrocious, bright red lips and false eyelashes. The filmspent a lot of money on a first time director. It will die at the box office. A Moulin Rouge it aint. Tries to be but fails Les Miserably. Expand

The most glaring problem was the god-awful music and choreography. The only performer that really got to showcase her abilities was Rebecca Ferguson and she had to sing one of those lousy songs. (How about an opera singer singing an actual aria?) Shame on Hugh Jackman, Zach Efron and all the others for condescending to sing those pathetic notes and dance that horrendous choreography. The dancing was just bumping and grinding. The local strip club does better. Really, really disappointing. Expand

However, even so it seems weak and personally much prefer it had been a straight biopic drama on the compelling subject with musical numbers embedded in the circus acts. Expand

YES, it is visually stunning. YES, "This Is Me" is a masterpiece of a song. But NO, NO, NO ! I didn't like the movie AT ALL ! But NO, NO, NO ! I didn't like the movie AT ALL ! First of all the choice of actors, why would you think that Zac Efron and Zendaya would make a cute couple, WHERE IS THE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THOSE TWO ??? And what about the songs, they're so cringe when they appear out of nowhere, it makes me si uncomfortable and trust me, I loved HSM, Camp Rock and Glee, there's just something wrong about this specific movie that I despise. To my eye, every single scene was not worth the watch, some made me uncomfortably angry for some reason I can't even explain. Anyway, I Hated this movie, thanks. Expand

I'll start by saying that I didn't enjoy the music, so I had no hope of enjoying this movie really. I can see why people might like it though. All the music sounded the same to my ears, just a lot of over the top, trying to be awe inspiring, key changing drudgery.
Music aside, for a movie about a "Great" show, we never really saw any of the actual show until the very end. Most of the time that there is a shot of the show, it is just a group of people doing Michael Jackson type dancing and singing about how great the show is. The characters and story telling were shallow and basic. Overall just a bit boring and pointless.
