This was definitely a fun,Finally got around to seeing this, and I have to echo what the majority of audiences have been saying by saying that the critics were much too harsh towards this film and kinda missed the whole point of it. This was definitely a fun, well-meaning, and upbeat feel-good musical. With that being said however, it was pretty formulaic and predictable for the most part, and some of the songs were rather mediocre (I personally found 'This is Me' to be rather overrated and not particularly memorable), but I will say that most of them were very good. Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, and the rest of the cast we're all a delight to watch of course too. Overall, it wasn't anywhere near what the critics would have you believe it is, but it also wasn't spectacular either in my opinion. It was just a very upbeat and well-made film that put a smile on my face for enough of it. Expand

Could've benefited from a more experienced director, but a great cast, amazing music, and well done musical numbers save this one. A pleasant time at the movies.

The critics blew it on this one. Good music. Stunning choreography.

I'm 75 and love musicals. As the credits began to roll, a youngster down the row said, "Daddy, I liked it a lot. Can we stay for the next showing?"

I heard mediocre reviews from the critics and everyone else has just absolutely adored it, I'm in the middle. It was entertaining and the characters were pretty entertaining, but it focused more on the glamour than anything. This movie hoodwinked us just like the show hoodwinked its audience. I don't believe that this story was all just wonder, glamour, and singing. We did get to see a little bit of the dirty stuff behind it, such as the social prejudice. Other than that, this was just a fairly entertaining movie. I didn't feel moved when I left the theater, I left thinking that that was just fine. C+ Expand

Anything you can say against a carnival can be said against this movie. The story was not the best in the world, the special effects were sometimes a bit wonky looking, and it was quite a bit fake when it came to telling the story of P. T. Barnum. However, this also applies vice versa, as this movie perfectly captures magic and shows it to the audience. The music in the movie is incredible, the choreography is amazing, the interaction between Barnum and his daughters is magical. Heck, even the wonky special effect only make this movie seem more fantastical!

All in all, this movie captures the magic of the carnival, along with the downsides that go along with it. If you are willing to look past the inconsistencies that go along with it, be prepared for a magical experience whose music will be stuck in your head all day and bright colors will make you have a smile nearly permanently plastered on your face.

What is the job of a film critic.
I thought it was to guide us, the paying public, on what we should spend our time and money on. They have made fools of themselves with this one.
If I was their editor I would be hauling them in my office and asking what the hell is going on. You slate a film and instead of people agreeing with you, the word spreads like wild fire that it's a must see !
And as for the critics who wrote " it won't be remembered for very long".
When the stage musical comes out ( as it surely will ) and people are standing and cheering, they are going to look like complete fools , just like the ones who back in the day said Les Miserables wouldn't last more than six weeks!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought this was a very good movie. I was very surprised in the fact of how much singing was done. I didn't expect the first 25 min would be entirely singing, I came into the movie knowing nothing about it also. But I thought the movie told the story of PT greatly. Favorably speaking i wish Zendaya had more of an important role than she did, i also thought Zac Efron played his role very well. Overall the movie was great, the characters showed their talent and portrayed their characters very well. I would advise everyone to watch it, especially if you are a musical fan. I am not sure if it is worth the $10+ to see it, so I will advise either seeing it on a deal day depending on your movie theater, or waiting till it is on Netflix/Redbox. Expand

The catchy songs, brilliant sets, great cast and flashy scenes really caught my attention. This movie left me wanting to know more about P.T. Barnum and the people he worked along side with. Unfortunately, many of the events that took place during the film are not exactly historically accurate. All things aside, the lack of historically accuracy did not take away much from the film. The "musical" aspect of the film was not overwhelming and appealed to all people in my party at the theater and not just the musical fans. The story line is simply accompanied with music sung by the cast that is relevant to what is going on in the film. It is not too "Musically". I believe that the movie was beautifully casted and would not look to change much about that. Expand

Anyways, I love this movie so much and the critics were really harsh on this movie. I love this movie so much and the songs are super catchy. The plot line isn't like the actual real life story. I mean its a movie, come on guys it's not a big deal! The dances and the choreography was quite decent. My children loved the movie so much and I loved the movie so much! It will be one of my favorites!! Some parts made P.T. Barnum seem like a good guy but in real life he wasn't the best man. I did like what they turned P.T. Barnum! I don't mind that the whole story in the movie isn't based of the true story. If it was then it would be a really depressing musical and that would be a thumbs down. My overall review would be that I really really liked the movie and I feel that you should do, the songs are super catchy and get stuck in your head. The story had some inspiration and some romance (no sexual scenes) the movie is great for kids. P.S. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS IS THE OTHER SIDE BY THE WAY! Expand

It does exactly what it sets out to do - to put on a glorious show in circus style, exciting, musical, theatrical, maybe a little dangerous, a big-top containing a little world apart from the reality of day to day life. You know as you are watching that it's all done with mirrors; that any connection with the history is tenuous, that there is a real story somewhere outside that is much less bright and shiny; you know its all fake. But, who cares? - its the circus and it's fun. You will walk out humming and wanting to dance.
I also thought the film was cleverer than it first appears - asking some genuine questions about what is real and what is not when it comes to entertainment. Critics have got it wrong.
Enjoy.

I have never written a review, and usually kinda blasé about this kind of movie. I went because she wanted to see it and I have been back 3 times to watch it, and am going again for the 4th time. I haven't even seen that many movies in 4 years and those were Star Wars and Jumanji. Each time I go I take someone new. A great spectacle, unbelievable camera work and I have no words for the music and choreography. I woke up after first seeing it with the music in my head, like what??? But immediately bought it and everyone who has seen the movie or ridden with me loves the soundtrack. I know a lot of critics harp on how awful Barnum really was, but that has squat to do with this movie. This is entertainment, not a biography. Pure fun rollicking make you move, sing, smile, laugh entertainment. And I saw one 0 review, they hated the music and the dancing. I know every one has different tastes, but I know for a fact I would not like that person. Wow, seriously? If this can't make you enjoy yourself for a bit of time and the song and dance, I really would be scared to meet you. This is heartwarming, fun, has good messages for this day and time and is one of the top 3 movies I have ever seen. Don't listen to naysayers, they are all dead inside if they aren't even a bit positively affected by this show. Expand

With Michael Gracey“The Greatest Showman” is definitely great in most parts with it’s flashy and fast paced-fun musical scenes to it’s deep and heart pouring drama scenes with just a great A-List cast and crew in this spectacular production. With Michael Gracey directorial debut, he definitely knew how to open up a show. Visually this movie is stunning with multiple incredible shots of the circus in action with various musical scenes scattered throughout in various locations and it’s very witty and fun cast to backup this colorful movie making it stand out from the rest of these serious and deep ‘oscar bait’ movies coming out before the end of the year. Casting wise everything was amazing. Hugh Jackman put in another perfect performance as the legendary P.T. Barnum with his golden musical voice and cheering smile. With both him looking ragged and practically homeless to being practically prince material he pulls it off to the tee. Alongside with Michelle Williams giving a great performance as his push and support throughout the film and his guide to what he really needs in the world. Even the other cast; Zac Efron coming back into singing where he started with disney amung with Zendaya from the same network, Rebecca Ferguson and Keala Settle both giving full heart and even one spotting one hell of a beard for this film. Singing wise everyone did their own voices and it fit perfectly, my biggest worry going into any musical is the production dubbing in another person’s voice and it just not fitting at all. The sets were beautiful between it’s homeless side of the story in the first act to the gorgeous ballrooms and fancy mansions shown throughout the rest of the film as well. The sets also played great places for the cast to sing and dance to. My personal favorite being the first bar scene in the film with the song choice and the choreographed dance scene was just beautiful. Even the dance scenes with every act on the stage was amazing with the long single takes and the amount of objects moving was beautiful. With the use of CGI to build some of the bigger views of the city and some of the landscape, it seems seamless with the match of practical built sets and real props. The story was great overall, the songs came in at the best parts to drive the raw emotion into the film. The pacing was overall really well done with some small parts that felt dragged out. But immediately followed by an amazing dance sequence or another singing piece. And even when the singing isn’t going on they have a beautiful score to keep the pace and drive of the film rolling just as fast as the trapeze performers in the film. With multiple romances of all different degrees and the build of what has sadly closed recently, the circus is something everyone should (or should have) experienced in their lives one time or another and with it gone “The Greatest Showman” is a great substitute to that void that many people will have. My biggest problem with the film has to be that a few sequences of time passing could’ve been stretched out with possibly another dance number or something to show the struggle of it being built instead of it just being there out of nowhere. And then there were a few scenes that were dragged out a bit that were attempted to be corrected by a musical number. But for a first time director he did a brilliant job with this warm-hearted circus filled musical. Expand

I just saw The Greatest Showman and just

It was so, so amazingly wonderful.

Ignore the other critics telling you it isn’t “historically accurate”. Unfortunately, these are the people that go to a film made with love and passion and leave with a heaviness in their heart.

There is no denying P.T. Barnum said such things as “another sucker is born every minute”. There is no denying that he was a swindler and a con man.
Yet I ask how petty one must be to disregard a movie made with a love adamant in every frame, made for the love of telling a whimsical story, made to bring those who feel out of place together in a profound unity, simply because it is not historically accurate?

The Greatest Showman is a film celebrating the strength and whimsy of humanity. It is a film made to show people with scars and that they are proud of such scars. In every single frame there is a love and passion and dedication that shines through that I have not seen in so many years.

Please, I beg you to go see this movie. Because a movie is not historically accurate should not define what it is and make is message of vivid colors and wonderful humanity invalid. Go see this movie. I promise, you will leave with a smile, as I did.

The Greatest Showman is a stunning achievement that is being marginalized for its crowd pleasing tendencies. I am going to compare this to La La Land in which the former has reinvogarated the musicals, yet have casts, brilliant that they were who couldn't sing or dance. The Greatest Showman, Jackman included, is the complete opposite. These are casts that are more suited to a musical, with singing and dancing skills on the level on any Broadway shows around. Headlining this is obviously Jackman himself in a tour de force performance, singing and dancing away. This along with stellar casting: Michelle Williams, Zach Efron, Zendaya and the rest made this an unforgettable experience. The soundtrack is absolutely great and are literally the heart and soul of this film. It will leave you toe tapping your way out of the theater. Expand

“The Greatest Showman” refutes the argument “They don’t make them like they use to”, as this movie could have starred Gene Kelly in the Hugh Jackson role on the sets of M-G-M, the Warner Brothers or 20th Century Fox studios. The costumes“The Greatest Showman” refutes the argument “They don’t make them like they use to”, as this movie could have starred Gene Kelly in the Hugh Jackson role on the sets of M-G-M, the Warner Brothers or 20th Century Fox studios. The costumes could have been made by Edith Head or Adrian and the story could have been written by one of the contract writers.

The main difference between the 1950s musical and “The Greatest Showman” are the songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul along with the choreography of Ashley Wallen which are strictly 2017! The songs will have you clapping and toe-tapping right along with the dancing.

The main similarity of the musical movies of yesteryear and “The Greatest Showman” is that they entertain and with all the talent involved this one certainly entertains.

Hugh Jackman, as P. T. Barnum, has proven on both stage and in films that he is a class A song and dance man who can stand side by side with the greats of yesterday. He has a good dance partner in Zac Efron who could be Donald O’Connor to Jackson’s Gene Kelly. They have a song, “The Other Side”, set in a bar and choreographed with shot glasses that are good as any song and dance number you will find in movies.

Michelle Williams as Barnum’s wife adds accolades of singing and dancing to her long list of credits while Keala Settle, as The Bearded Lady Lettie, belts out “This is Me” which is the theme song of Barnum’s circus.

Aside from the love story which opens the movie showing the young Phineas (Ellis Rubin) and Charity (Skylar Dunn) with the song “A Million Dreams” up to them as adults there is the love story between wealthy Phillip Carlyle (Efron) and Black trapeze artist Anne Wheeler (played by Zendaya) causing some backlash from the city citizens but also offering “Rewrite The Stars” as they do tricks in the center ring.

The story, for what it is worth, serves the purpose of introducing the songs that keep the movie moving, entertaining the audience and, as Barnum did, give the public the razzle-dazzle that puts a smile on your face.

“The Greatest Showman” has something for everyone (except sex and 4 letter words!) and delivers with stars, songs, dances and even bit of a ‘drama’ that will be forgotten quickly though the songs will remain. You will leave the movie with a smile on your face and what more do you want this time, or anytime, of the year.

On the other hand, unlike many musicals, the actors aren't singing all the dialogue, which is something that frequently annoys me in musicals. In addition, the songs are actually really good, in fact I found some stuck in my head and downloaded the album, I've listened to it all the way through 4 times and it gets better every time. Barnum in real life and PT Barnum in the film, played wonderfully by Hugh Jackman. The movie starts off really well and it does leave you with some clues to who PT Barnum was before he became the "Greatest Showman," the problem really lays in the middle where two many plot lines, subpolots, ect start to intertwine and the film starts to feel overwhelming. However, the film really starts to pick back up towards the end where alot of the enjoyment really can be had. The movie is very solidly made, it could have benefited from a more polished director but the cast (Jackman, Efron, Zendaya, to name a few), visuals, set pieces and score give the movie the boost it needs to recover from a murky middle.

If you liked the Fame movie (1980) or the best parts of the Step Up series, this is for you. Better than the Step Up installments I've seen. I liked it quite a bit more than La La Land. Where La La narratively adheres to telling a realistic tale of lovers coming together--then coming part in Los Angeles, Showman is burdened with no such reality to conform to. Barnum's life is skillfully made into a series of familiar narrative tropes which give weight and gravity to almost non-stop sing-dance numbers which really fly. "Hit it out of the parK" in a baseball phrase. If you remember Stomp on YouTube or on stage, still playing in NYC stomponline.com, some numbers in Showman have the same precise musicality of sound effects; and, random background sounds are always musical. If you thought the directorial challenges of tone etc in La La Land were formidable, I did too. All those challenges plus more and done mostly better here in Showman. I love Hugh Jackman. This is him in top Broadway form. Showman offers a "great moment in cinema," the scene where Zac Efron is introduced to Zendays on ultra-slo-motion trapese. Check the stills to see this in its full beauty with the underlighting of her body. For me, Showman revealed two new female stars, Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson. Hit it out of the park. I watched an hour interview on FX Guide with directory Michael Gracey. I felt he had integrity, another typical introverted genius type I can relate with.

The Greatest Showman is definitely a feel good movie, where Jackman’s character takes a quick trip to the island of misfit toys to show the world that they can put on a show. And they do so, so 9 out of 10 stars. I do believe this film will find its audience even tho so far it has failed at the boxoffice with such competition as Last Jedi and Jumanji during the holiday season releases. It's a great feel good movie for the holidays that only a fog machine, a spotlight and a man with a dream can deliver. Expand

The Greatest Showman is, for the most part, good, but it is by no means "great". I came into this movie hoping to be blown away (my friends all gave this moving glowing reviews). Sadly, that is not the case. Although, I did enjoy this movie, what I watched feels like an entirely different movie from what my friends watched. With that, let's talk about what I don't like about this movie.

The movie was entirely forgettable, story-wise, at least. The characters did not shine through at all. The carnies are, ironically, forgettable. I wish they gave these characters more exposition. I hoped that they would be talked about more. Their backstories more elaborate. But, no. By the end of the movie, there were more carnies than ever, and I did not know anyone of them. It's a shame because the movie wants you to sympathize with these people, about being different, yet we don't know who they really are. We don't get to know any of them. The movie is, for the most part, centered on Hugh Jackman. I get it. I know the movie isn't called The Greatest Carnies, but still. Choreography was mediocre. There wasn't anything special about the choreography at all. Nothing new we've seen from previous musicals. Maybe even a downgrade. The songs at least were pretty good and catchy that it kind of diverted attention away from the bland choreography. The parts that I hated were the God-awful CGI. There was one scene in particular, near the end of the movie where I just thought: "Geez. Really guys?". The CGI was so bad, I couldn't believe I was watching that in 2018. Taking all this into consideration, I did have a good time with this movie. It's such a happy-fun time kind of movie. If you just wanna watch a musical and have fun, it's worth a one-time viewing, at least. Although, there were a lot of things that I didn't like with this movie, overall, I did have a good time. The songs were the Hail Mary pass, but did they make it? For the most part, yes.

The characters where well written and the songs were amazing. If I had pick a favorite one it would be The Other Side. Jackman portrayed Barnum fantastically. However there are some problems I have with the movie. Like how it an over romanticized version of Barnum's live. Also they don't give the movie much time to breath in between musical numbers and some do just feel like music videos slammed into the movie. Yet you can still enjoy them. In conclusion if you like the circus and musicals than you'll like this film, if not then sadly this film is not for you. Expand

This review has been shortened somewhat. The Full review can be found at my wordpress blog: Fluctuating Thoughts On Films.

Movie musicals have been making a resurgence in recent years, and it seems we have two people to either thank or blame, depending on your opinion on the genre. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are an American songwriting duo, and have been making quite the name for themselves in recent years. The first brush I have had with the pair was with the Broadway hit ‘Dear Evan Hansen’, which went on to sweep the Tony awards last year. Following this was their success on the silver screen with the Oscar-winning ‘La La Land’. This success showed there was a real audience for modern movie musicals, and it seems they sought to capitalise on this realisation.

How much you’ll enjoy this film will almost certainly revolve around how much you know about the character. It’s important to note that there is many inaccuracies and oddities littered throughout, both relating to P.T. Barnum as a person, and to the time period in general. I shan’t go into all of the specifics, but here are a couple of outlines of things conveniently missing: Joice Heth (a literal slave whom Barnum passed off as the 161 year old nursemaid to George Washington) and child labour (both ‘The bearded woman’ and ‘General Tom Thumb’ were brought on as attractions when they were children). Finally, it’s debatable whether or not the climax of the film even happened. Barnum’s museum did burn down, however this was before he’d even gotten into the circus business at all. Rather clearly, many liberties were taken.

Michael Gracey managed to put incredible things onto the screen with this film, and I was genuinely amazed at moments. If I were to score it based on the cinematography and choreography alone, it’d have a comfortable 9/10. Almost every song has fantastic action accompanying it, whether it be elaborate dance numbers featuring the majority of the cast, or intimate performances between two characters. The CGI, however, was lacking, presumably due to the lower budget compared to the CGI extravaganzas i’m used to. It’s also used sparingly, so I can forgive it.

Speaking of the characters, I was pleasantly surprised by the performances in this film. Besides the child actors who I felt were lacking, I feel everyone was at least passable. Some, however, surpassed my expectations. Zendaya, whom I had yet to enjoyed in a film, particularly after Spider-Man: Homecoming, was incredible. I, personally, almost never feel any real emotion in the cinema. I can find a scene sad, but I’ll rarely cry. Despite the actual scene being rather unremarkable, Zendaya’s performance was incredibly believable, to a point where I almost found myself crying. Hugh Jackman, unsurprisingly, was also fantastic and I even found myself enjoying Zac Effron’s character, and not just as a novelty.

One character I found myself bewildered by was Jenny Lind. While I have only read about the real life person briefly, she seems to be a genuinely kindhearted and incredibly talented person. In this film, she’s arguably neither. Given the fact she is an opera singer, I expected her song to be.. opera. It wasn’t. Instead, it was a belted pop ballad, which I wouldn’t be against were it not meant to be sung by one of the greatest opera singers of the 19th Century. Regarding the music, I felt it was a mixed bag. All of the songs are enjoyable, but I found many of the group performances to blend together, becoming hard to distinguish from one another. Also, I personally wasn’t a fan of how almost all of the songs were Pop, in one way or another. I appreciate it appeals to the largest audience, but I’d have rather seen some risks taken with the genres. If you wish to learn about P.T. Barnum, I’d suggest looking elsewhere. He’s a fascinating character, and in this case, truth is almost stranger than fiction. Taking historical accuracy and the like into consideration, the film is most likely a 4/10. Despite this, however, I don’t feel I can give it such a low score. I legitimately enjoyed myself watching this film, and though it had it’s many flaws, I feel it deserves better. If you can watch this as it’s own, standalone story, without the baggage that reality brings with it, I feel 7/10 is a perfectly fair score, and it’s the one I’ll be using officially. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys movie musicals, and even to regular film lovers who enjoy dazzling cinematography.

If you absolutely loved "La La Land," you probably won't like "The Greatest Showman." However, I was not a huge fan of "La La Land," and I found "The Greatest Showman" to be absolutely brilliant. It follows the life of P.T. Barnum and the creation of the circus. In comparison to "La La Land," "Showman" had amazing music with deeply moving lyrics. "Showman" also had important things to say, when "La La Land" did not. "Showman" is a celebration of individuality and encourages its audience to not only follow your heart, but to follow your conscience. It also places great emphasis on family. The story is very well done and the characters are well portrayed and somewhat have depth. But again, I hated "La La Land." If you enjoyed "La La Land," you will probably not like "Showman." They really have little in common. Expand

For me and my wife, it delivered what is expected of a musical. This is such a good family movie. Fun, great music and acting. This movie is not controversial. It's not part of pop culture like certain brands. It's not the movie that everyone needs to praise. It's just a great movie that you need to judge for yourself. The critics may look at certain details that the common movie goer doesn't but they aren't always right when it comes to understanding if a movie is going to entertain you or not.

And I use the word “brought” very loosely. The musical that every person has not stopped talking about since Christmas. The musical many people insisted I would actually like. So I almost hate to disappoint you all but I did not like The Greatest Showman. I did not enjoy it and the songs for the most part were not for me.

What better way to celebrate the birth of the circus than in musical format, starring Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and a whole bunch of other people I didn’t bother to look up. Clearly I’m in the minority here as The Greatest Showman has done extremely well for itself. Not only has it made a huge profit but it’s also been Oscar nominated for best original song. Just because I hated it doesn’t mean it hasn’t done something right. I won’t lie, not all the songs are terrible, at least two are well written but the rest made me want to rip my ears off just to make it stop. Who knew there was an audience for the fairy tale version of P.T. Barnum, complete with song after song, auto-tuned to within an inch of its life topped off with some very questionable lip-syncing by some (looking at you Rebecca Ferguson). In a Moulin Rouge-esque style of story telling and dance numbers it soon became sickening. Not to mention the mediocre predictable story and the dodgy CGI. The songs just didn’t stop, after a while I just tried to tune it all out. Hugh Jackman was a good choice and he certainly looks like he’s having fun. There is an audience for The Greatest Showman but obviously I’m not part of it. I felt like the theatre critic in the movie, honestly he was the only character I could relate to. La La Land reminded me that I can enjoy musicals, whereas The Greatest Showman reminded me why I hate them. If you like musicals then you’ll love this but if they’re not your thing then maybe give this one a miss like I should have.

Michael Gracey is a new, young, first-time director who fails to lead the movie to a clear direction. The songs are great in the theaters, but is too commercialized, without true feelings in the root of the songs. When the actors/actress were singing, it felt like they were playing a soundtrack, instead of the voice coming out from their mouth thanks to the overdone musical production. It's not until the middle of the film that you really able to grasp what the movie is about. Throughout the movie, the plot is divided, empty, and messy. Not to mention that this 'based on true events' movie hid the true dark side of the protagonist - Darnum, who exploited African Americans for his own fame and wealth, which is completely the reverse of the "moral values" of the movie. It might be a good entertainment movie, but failed to do most part decently. Expand

It was dreadful. Everything was so clouded and filtered. The costumes were so uncertain to be authentic or fantasy, terrible either way. The film sets up a scene that we will be meeting the greatest opera singer of the time. What we get is hardly opera but don't ask me what she is meant to be.As for the choreography, did I actually witness moves and steps so out of line with the period.Even the make up was atrocious, bright red lips and false eyelashes. The filmspent a lot of money on a first time director. Even though his presence is the dominant force, his energetic performance never ignites inspiration. It doesn't help that the story is written in broad strokes with rudimentary motivations and cursory emotions. The choreography is sometimes clever and there are snazzy directorial touches, including a steady energy throughout. Still, the combined effect is rather lackluster. Expand
