Another very good action movie, from Netflix, that is seemingly panned by the exact same critics that constantly give Marvel movies high ratings.

Unlike most Marvel movies, there's never a dull moment in this Russo Brothers, high pace, action thriller, with just a hint of levity. The dialogue is a class above most in the genre, whilst the plot is of less importance, it stays just streamlined enough so as not to require lengthy exposition, and to move the film along at a fantastic pace, whilst never feeling like a trite excuse simply to connect action scenes.
There's some excellent choreography, with a good mix of close and wide shot combat as well as an interesting use of smoke, dust, and other particle effects that give the movie an overall visual style and identity of its own, that's subtle but definitely sets it apart for those who are paying attention. Indeed, photography, alongside excellent production and set design, is way above standard for the genre and there are a handful of establishing shots, done with a mixture of drone and CG, at great speed, that are simply the best in class, that any genre has yet achieved. Jessica Henwick, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Ryan Gosling are all excellent, with the supporting cast all putting in extremely good performances, too. In short, the movie is excellent. If you go in expecting an exciting, two-hour action movie, then you'll almost certainly disagree with every single "professional" review out there and enjoy your time.

Well-known actors. A $200 million budget. Directed by the two men behind the biggest superhero movie in history, and yet The Gray Man is a lifeless experience without a shred of excitement, suspense, or tension.
Even the action is pretty simplistic. There's not a single great sequence in it. And with that budget, that's actually quite disappointing.

I raised my expectations because of the people involved in its creation, but being a Netflix exclusive I had quite a few reservations and my instinct did not deceive me.
It's a shame, but this offering is just one more in a long line of disappointments. We make them successful at the time because we watch them in their platform, but no one will remember them in a few months. And I'm sure as hell no one will be talking anymore about The Gray Man in a couple of weeks.

A few less explosions than your standard Michael Bay outing, it nonetheless has plenty of boom.

Gosling did well Billy Bob amazing Brigerton good in half his scenes so that’s the writer and directors fault. But Evans was the worst playing a cartoon of a spy operative whatever he is sticking out like a sore thumb. Can’t believe people are complimenting that character - almost makes the movie a spoof. Either make it John Wickish or James Bondish or something without the tropes vs this mess - could have been good if they made Evans more believable and did better at the spy and action scenes - sadly some of the critics nail this one vs rabid fans giving it 10’s Expand

It is a non stop thrill ride with some really great action sequences and a super stellar cast! Chris Evans, especially, is really relishing in this role, and it shows on the screen. There's also a great mix of some dark comedy that seems almost perfectly placed at all the best, most appropriate moments, but isn't too much, it's a good balance with the action and drama! Highly recommended and honestly did not want it to end. It could have continued for another two hours and I would have been fine.

Watched at the premiere at the Regency Bruin theater in Westwood featuring a post-screening Q&A with the Russo Brothers, Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jessica Henwick, Ragè-Jean Page, Julia Butters, Dhanush, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton.

Directed and produced by the Russo Brothers (best known for helming 'Captain America: Civil War', 'Avengers: Infinity War', and 'Endgame'), this is an adaptation of the series of 'Gray Man' novels written by Mark Greaney, and it interestingly also happens to come with a rather hefty price tag $200 million, Netflix's most expensive film to date). And it certainly shows, as the film has no shortage of big and loud explosions and set pieces galore, plenty of brutal hand-to-hand fights, and a relentless pace with almost nonstop action, which admittedly became a bit tiring and a sensory overload of sorts at times, but remained mostly enjoyable nevertheless. Furthermore, Gosling and Evans are in top action star form here, with the former gracing us with another charming and witty performance and the latter appearing to have a blast in a snarky villainous role for a change. Solid supporting performances from Ana De Armas, Rege-Jean Page, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton also keep things moving along. Storywise, it's nothing to new or extraordinary to ride home about and certainly draws inspiration from other similarly-themed stories such as the 'Bourne' films and stories, but it remains an entertaining albeit ridiculous ride regardless. Overall, come for the non-stop action sequences and extravagant explosions and set pieces, and stay for one wild and entertaining showdown between gosling and Evans. Expand

Some decent action sequences, but a poor blend of tones and PG-13 violence hold it back from the levels of Bourne or Mission: Impossible.

Ryan Gosling plays one of those covert CIA agents with a license to kill and more. A secret is uncovered about corruption in the top brass (led by Regé-Jean Page going villainous in his first role since Bridgerton). So, another super killerRyan Gosling plays one of those covert CIA agents with a license to kill and more. A secret is uncovered about corruption in the top brass (led by Regé-Jean Page going villainous in his first role since Bridgerton). So, another super killer is sent to quash the story (Chris Evans, also relishing being offhandedly mean). With the exotic and interesting locations and constant chases, this often feels like a Bond clone (even the music echoes 007). Add in the Russo Brothers (directors of several major Marvels) and you have a grand scale action adventure. Just like many of their previous projects, the fights are often a blur, so it's hard to appreciate them. Meanwhile, the vehicle pursuits go over the top. Overall, this is a pretty standard spy vs spy flick, but the strong cast and big budget scope keep it entertaining. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, I want to preface that Dhanush is innocent. He was taken hostage by cinematic terrorists! He is not to blame! (And frankly incredibly underutilized like so many)

Anyways, two of the most inexplicably praised Hollywood acts worked on this movie, and unfortunately they did not step up their craft enough to make this a watchable movie. Putting aside Chris Evans' usual "acting" choices— with him, it's either pretending to be a wooden plank or wishing that he did pretend to be a wooden plank —the Russo brothers return once again with another boatload of money to make another movie that begs the question: why they are still being funded? This movie is just a shower of the most generic action movie tropes that goes to show that these directors ironically have little direction to go in and little artistic vision beyond simply checking off a list of scenes and plot points in the least entertaining and least emotional way possible.

And it is very hilarious how the Russos called back on The Winter Soldier as their name drop for what this movie is supposed to feel like, because all they showed is that they have no clue WHY people enjoyed that movie and regarded it as the MCU's best until it was forgotten by the churn of Content. The emotional heart and depth of that movie and the political intrigue and commentary were what made that movie great, but— and this is already obvious with how they talk about it in interviews —the Russos misunderstood both of these and have a very different idea of what made that movie: loud booms and generic gray colorgrades of cityscapes with a generic action movie score and the occasional one-liner zing here and there. Honestly, to call this a "spy thriller" even seems like a stretch, since the Russos just tick off the boxes of the genre in the most uninspired way possible, almost as if this movie was generated by an AI.
