It’s a film created by committee (or computer algorithm) to try and please as much of the general audience as possible. It lacks a single frame of originality, and has obviously been dumbed-down to the lowest common denominator to appeal to international audiences. The story is so generic and predictable, dialogue is stupid, action is OK at times but some of the CGI is terrible, and the A-list cast either sleep walk through their roles or give over-the-top that are laughable. It continues the trend of Netflix original movies being disappointing. How this film cost $200 million is seriously mind-boggling. Don’t waste your time here… Expand

Gosling did well Billy Bob amazing Brigerton good in half his scenes so that’s the writer and directors fault. But Evans was the worst playing a cartoon of a spy operative whatever he is sticking out like a sore thumb. Can’t believe people are complimenting that character - almost makes the movie a spoof. Either make it John Wickish or James Bondish or something without the tropes vs this mess - could have been good if they made Evans more believable and did better at the spy and action scenes - sadly some of the critics nail this one vs rabid fans giving it 10’s Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One way to explain this movie would be a worse "John Wick". Completely generic plot that revolves around crooked CIA members and the proof contained in a memory stick. The protagonist has such memory stick and is chased for it. The end of the movie you say? The bad guys got to live and have the memory stick. However our protagonist got to save the children! "Wait what does the children has to do with all of this?" You ask. Well it doesn't make any sense. This is the last straw of a dying platform. Making a movie thinking already of making a series. Think again Netflix. Bye and see you when you got better again. *Unsubscribed* Expand

Terrible. Doesn’t resemble the book whatsoever. They couldn’t have made a worse adaptation if they tried. It is so unrecognizable that they shouldn’t have been allowed to call this “The Gray Man.” Embarrassingly bad.

I like action movies, as long as they have a good story. The Gray Man often feels like a collage of action scenes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, I want to preface that Dhanush is innocent. He was taken hostage by cinematic terrorists! He is not to blame! (And frankly incredibly underutilized like so many)

Anyways, two of the most inexplicably praised Hollywood acts worked on this movie, and unfortunately they did not step up their craft enough to make this a watchable movie. Putting aside Chris Evans' usual "acting" choices— with him, it's either pretending to be a wooden plank or wishing that he did pretend to be a wooden plank —the Russo brothers return once again with another boatload of money to make another movie that begs the question: why they are still being funded? This movie is just a shower of the most generic action movie tropes that goes to show that these directors ironically have little direction to go in and little artistic vision beyond simply checking off a list of scenes and plot points in the least entertaining and least emotional way possible.

And it is very hilarious how the Russos called back on The Winter Soldier as their name drop for what this movie is supposed to feel like, because all they showed is that they have no clue WHY people enjoyed that movie and regarded it as the MCU's best until it was forgotten by the churn of Content. The emotional heart and depth of that movie and the political intrigue and commentary were what made that movie great, but— and this is already obvious with how they talk about it in interviews —the Russos misunderstood both of these and have a very different idea of what made that movie: loud booms and generic gray colorgrades of cityscapes with a generic action movie score and the occasional one-liner zing here and there. Honestly, to call this a "spy thriller" even seems like a stretch, since the Russos just tick off the boxes of the genre in the most uninspired way possible, almost as if this movie was generated by an AI.

I had to come back and lower my evaluation. I keep thinking, and it just got worse with time. Great premise... but so many plot holes so they have excuses for the action. Great premise... but so many plot holes so they have excuses for the action. Yes, the other reviews were correct, cliche after cliche. The screenplay is the worst, and the editing and cinematography are great. Without superheroes in their story, to cover the plot holes, it just falls apart. If you decide to see it, make sure you have the ability to fast forward through the boring parts (most of the fight scenes where they just hit each other forever). The normal wooden acting from Gosling, but since most everyone are one-dimensional characters it does not really matter. Oh, and in case you care, there are no character arcs for any of the characters, just action. Expand

Two of some of the highest grossing directors right now, two of the top three highest grossing screenwriters right now, decent editors, A-list actors, and a $200 million budget?? There were a couple of good moments, but those were a few pieces of straw in a pile of needles. At first, I enjoyed Gosling's dead-pan calm performance, but that wore thin quick. Chris Evans was just "be a highly energetic guy who really enjoys being an **** and has the license to do whatever." Terribly choreographed fight scenes, badly edited, bland cinematography, forgetful sound, and 99% terrible dialog, and a cookie-cutter version of a cookie-cutter story line. Wow. Never read the books, but even if they're good, I won't read them. You'd think Netflix throwing a *massive* budget, with S-Tier staff all around, would make a decent movie. But someone dropped the ball, excepting a Fast and Furious level quality action film. Why not make a more down to Earth version of the Borne films, instead of a 'Machete' level version of the Borne films, that was also taken seriously? Skip it if you haven't watched it already. Expand

You have to go looking for a while to find anything with worse dialogues. Action is bloated and unrealistic. This is the kind of thing you have on in the background while you browse the web.

As an action heavy movie, the story matters little, but what there is is too long, too boring, and makes too little sense that it becomes a distraction. Talented actors are wasted on unbelievable, mechanical and unsympathizable characters. Dialogues are poorly written, and instead of funny the jokes just come of as trying too hard to lighten the mood. Overall two hours of my life that I would rather have done almost anything else, not to mention the $200M that should have gone to Ukraine or almost anything else. No chance that The Gray Man would become a franchise as Netflix has hyped. Expand

To actively write some of the worst dialogue ever heard in a film, to utilize CGI worse than a low budget 90's film, to direct and record in a way that suggests you didn't want the audience to follow what was happening on screen in the first place. To take an all-star cast and direct them in that graceful way a bull treads thought a China shop. The Grey Man actually succeeded in all of these fields. It also managed to feel dragged out and rushed at the same time somehow through the use of random flashbacks. Please don't make my mistake and stay very far away from this film. Expand

this is the epidemy of a dumb action flick, but the actions are not even enjoyable. Smoke and bad CGI make everything so blurry, so unrealistic and so mind-numbingly dumb. there are no characters in this movie, just one-directional plot devices.
