Yeah, I think the Russo brothers once again blow smoke up our **** trying to deliver another non-superhero blockbuster. The Gray Man is formula film on steroids, complete with unrealistic action without the need of computer-generated everything, dialogue that is no where near real world interactive speech and Chris Evans who looks like Hitler during his barbershop quartet days. I can count on my watch the minutes left before Disney sends over the acquisition papers to Netflix. You will watch The Gray Man when you have watched all others available and you're tired of watching reruns. Expand

Even the action is pretty simplistic. There's not a single great sequence in it. And with that budget, that's actually quite disappointing.

I raised my expectations because of the people involved in its creation, but being a Netflix exclusive I had quite a few reservations and my instinct did not deceive me.
It's a shame, but this offering is just one more in a long line of disappointments. We make them successful at the time because we watch them in their platform, but no one will remember them in a few months. And I'm sure as hell no one will be talking anymore about The Gray Man in a couple of weeks.

It’s a film created by committee (or computer algorithm) to try and please as much of the general audience as possible. It lacks a single frame of originality, and has obviously been dumbed-down to the lowest common denominator to appeal to international audiences. The story is so generic and predictable, dialogue is stupid, action is OK at times but some of the CGI is terrible, and the A-list cast either sleep walk through their roles or give over-the-top that are laughable. It continues the trend of Netflix original movies being disappointing. How this film cost $200 million is seriously mind-boggling. Don’t waste your time here… Expand

An overwhelming hodgepodge of action and visual effects of which I only highlight the charisma of the main 3 protagonists. The script is so bad, full of holes and underused characters (Ana de Armas). Chris Evans is clearly the stand out.

Completely generic plot that revolves around crooked CIA members and the proof contained in a memory stick. The protagonist has such memory stick and is chased for it. The end of the movie you say? The bad guys got to live and have the memory stick. However our protagonist got to save the children! "Wait what does the children has to do with all of this?" You ask. Well it doesn't make any sense. This is the last straw of a dying platform. Making a movie thinking already of making a series. Think again Netflix. Directed and produced by the Russo Brothers (best known for helming 'Captain America: Civil War', 'Avengers: Infinity War', and 'Endgame'), this is an adaptation of the series of 'Gray Man' novels written by Mark Greaney, and it interestingly also happens to come with a rather hefty price tag $200 million, Netflix's most expensive film to date). And it certainly shows, as the film has no shortage of big and loud explosions and set pieces galore, plenty of brutal hand-to-hand fights, and a relentless pace with almost nonstop action, which admittedly became a bit tiring and a sensory overload of sorts at times, but remained mostly enjoyable nevertheless. Furthermore, Gosling and Evans are in top action star form here, with the former gracing us with another charming and witty performance and the latter appearing to have a blast in a snarky villainous role for a change. Solid supporting performances from Ana De Armas, Rege-Jean Page, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton also keep things moving along. Storywise, it's nothing to new or extraordinary to ride home about and certainly draws inspiration from other similarly-themed stories such as the 'Bourne' films and stories, but it remains an entertaining albeit ridiculous ride regardless. Overall, come for the non-stop action sequences and extravagant explosions and set pieces, and stay for one wild and entertaining showdown between gosling and Evans. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, I want to preface that Dhanush is innocent. He was taken hostage by cinematic terrorists! He is not to blame! (And frankly incredibly underutilized like so many)

Anyways, two of the most inexplicably praised Hollywood acts worked on this movie, and unfortunately they did not step up their craft enough to make this a watchable movie. Putting aside Chris Evans' usual "acting" choices— with him, it's either pretending to be a wooden plank or wishing that he did pretend to be a wooden plank —the Russo brothers return once again with another boatload of money to make another movie that begs the question: why they are still being funded? This movie is just a shower of the most generic action movie tropes that goes to show that these directors ironically have little direction to go in and little artistic vision beyond simply checking off a list of scenes and plot points in the least entertaining and least emotional way possible.

And it is very hilarious how the Russos called back on The Winter Soldier as their name drop for what this movie is supposed to feel like, because all they showed is that they have no clue WHY people enjoyed that movie and regarded it as the MCU's best until it was forgotten by the churn of Content. The emotional heart and depth of that movie and the political intrigue and commentary were what made that movie great, but— and this is already obvious with how they talk about it in interviews —the Russos misunderstood both of these and have a very different idea of what made that movie: loud booms and generic gray colorgrades of cityscapes with a generic action movie score and the occasional one-liner zing here and there. Honestly, to call this a "spy thriller" even seems like a stretch, since the Russos just tick off the boxes of the genre in the most uninspired way possible, almost as if this movie was generated by an AI.

The screenplay is the worst, and the editing and cinematography are great. Without superheroes in their story, to cover the plot holes, it just falls apart. If you decide to see it, make sure you have the ability to fast forward through the boring parts (most of the fight scenes where they just hit each other forever). So, another super killer is sent to quash the story (Chris Evans, also relishing being offhandedly mean). With the exotic and interesting locations and constant chases, this often feels like a Bond clone (even the music echoes 007). Add in the Russo Brothers (directors of several major Marvels) and you have a grand scale action adventure. This is over-the-top action, ridiculous and crazy fun. In other words, all the sour-puss critics will hate it and the rest of us (that's pretty much everyone else) will love it!

Another very good action movie, from Netflix, that is seemingly panned by the exact same critics that constantly give Marvel movies high ratings.

Unlike most Marvel movies, there's never a dull moment in this Russo Brothers, high pace, action thriller, with just a hint of levity. The dialogue is a class above most in the genre, whilst the plot is of less importance, it stays just streamlined enough so as not to require lengthy exposition, and to move the film along at a fantastic pace, whilst never feeling like a trite excuse simply to connect action scenes.
There's some excellent choreography, with a good mix of close and wide shot combat as well as an interesting use of smoke, dust, and other particle effects that give the movie an overall visual style and identity of its own, that's subtle but definitely sets it apart for those who are paying attention. Indeed, photography, alongside excellent production and set design, is way above standard for the genre and there are a handful of establishing shots, done with a mixture of drone and CG, at great speed, that are simply the best in class, that any genre has yet achieved. Jessica Henwick, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Ryan Gosling are all excellent, with the supporting cast all putting in extremely good performances, too. In short, the movie is excellent. If you go in expecting an exciting, two-hour action movie, then you'll almost certainly disagree with every single "professional" review out there and enjoy your time.

Still worth a watch. Chris Evans is a standout as one of the most unlikeable characters I have seen. Considering it's Captain America, that's no easy feat. There is some good in this movie and it can be exciting at times.Just don't get your hopes up. It you're hoping for a new John Wick/Jason Bourne, maybe look elsewhere.

Two of some of the highest grossing directors right now, two of the top three highest grossing screenwriters right now, decent editors, A-list actors, and a $200 million budget?? There were a couple of good moments, but those were a few pieces of straw in a pile of needles. At first, I enjoyed Gosling's dead-pan calm performance, but that wore thin quick. Chris Evans was just "be a highly energetic guy who really enjoys being an **** and has the license to do whatever." Terribly choreographed fight scenes, badly edited, bland cinematography, forgetful sound, and 99% terrible dialog, and a cookie-cutter version of a cookie-cutter story line. Wow. Never read the books, but even if they're good, I won't read them. You'd think Netflix throwing a *massive* budget, with S-Tier staff all around, would make a decent movie. But someone dropped the ball, excepting a Fast and Furious level quality action film. Why not make a more down to Earth version of the Borne films, instead of a 'Machete' level version of the Borne films, that was also taken seriously? Skip it if you haven't watched it already. Expand

It's the laziest bunch of criticism I've yet to behold. This is a fun movie and it's a great cast, even if the roles as written aren't particularly challenging. But Gosling and Evans have a great rapport and Evans in particular creates a character so hilarious that you may need to watch this twice.

Hey, reviewers, if you don't like action movies, or comedies, or combinations thereof, then stick to what you like. Writing lazy, negative reviews is like some guy at a party who didn't want to come in the first place and is going to bum out everyone within earshot. Piss off!

This was an excellent, action-packed film from start to finish, this is Russo Brothers do Michael Bay. This film asks the question, how many kill teams does it take to take down one skilled assassin? Some of the fight scenes were actually watchable, since most these days are throw aways. And so much destructive capacity on display - in the air, on the ground, guess the budget didn't allow for ships/subs. And the answer to the kill teams question: more than the ten they threw at him. My only signif complaint is the final escape scene wraps up too quickly, not the satisfying ending it should've been. Expand

It seems that Keanu Reeves was one of the responsible in havin' seen in Ana de Armas the potential to launch her in Hollywood as a new sex symbol. She, born in Havana and therefore Spanish speaking, did not know a word of English but, after the necessary learning courses, in 2015 she shot her first two films exactly with Keanu. She continued to play this her only role until the gigantic naked hologram in Villeneuve's "Blade Runner 2049" (2017). Then the sudden and unexpected turn alongside Craig in "No Time To Die" (Fukunaga 2021): a small part yet the most successful action sequence of the film. Now here she is co-starring with Gosling who forces the directors to the uninterrupted use of the Kuleshov effect: had Reeves been free and available, we would have had a "John Wick 4". The complete lack of ideas and images not already used millions of times forces the Russo brothers to hide such deficit with a dizzling pace, and it is the best thing about a blockbuster that flows away very fluidly so as to achieve its primary goal: an unconditional intellectual disengagement.
