This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film had a good cast and was directed very well. It was an interesting action packed film in most parts but I found I was quite bored in some parts as there was far too much talking. This would be a nice end to the divergent series as you will see at the end they all find there city is not the only place left but instead there is more outside the walls, but of course they will probably make several more films and spoil the divergent series. "Maze Runner" and "Divergent" were two of the most evident cases, with scripts and source material that, in everything, remind us of "Hunger Games".

In this film, the follow-up of "Divergent", we will see Jeannine's rise to power and the escape of Tris and Four. They lost friends and family in the military coup against Abnegation, and they take refuge with the Amity. The truce, however, is short: while Jeannine needs to find a specific, particularly strong Divergent, who opens a box where the Founders recorded a message, Four will find an unlikely ally, determined to overthrow the Erudite: his mother, Evelyn, who all assumed to be dead.

Personally, I think the film is a very dignified continuation, which honors the predecessor and entertains the audience quite well. Nevertheless, and like the first film, the script suffers from serious logic problems. For example, the strange way in which Tris looks traumatized and in shock with the events at the end of the previous film and quickly overcomes this, being able to fight. I think it would have been better for the film to follow the original book more closely, which was not done.

Imported from the previous film, the cast is quite good and competent. Shailene Woodley is beautiful, and I was surprised to see her without her long hair, but it was a change of look that fits the film and marks how much the character was marked by the previous events. The actress, moreover, did a good job. Theo James was also excellent, particularly in the action scenes, and I feel that he had more space and screen time to work here. Miles Teller is good, but hateful, and Jai Courtney is even more hateful, brutish and sadistic than in the first movie, which was great, given that the character demanded it. Kate Winslet goes from coldness to absolute inhumanity and transforms Jeannine into a potential genocide, while her arch rival, Evelyn, was brilliantly played by Naomi Watts, clearly implying that she is not, and will never be, a good option to rule the city. On the negative side, I was sad to see the way Zoe Kravitz almost disappeared from the film and I hated the constant changes in loyalty of Ansel Elgort's character.

Technically, the film is visually impressive. The cinematography is excellent, vibrant and sharp, and I loved the landscapes of a half-destroyed and decadent Chicago, of dry rivers and lakes and devastated buildings. Incredible, but not coherent: if the entire human population was there, wouldn't more space be needed? Why not rebuild the buildings? Didn't they have two hundred years of peace to do so? Another thing I liked and found amazing was the action and fighting sequences. Really well executed. The sets and costumes were very well done, the highlight being the Amity headquarters, which looks like a mix of futuristic planting and a hippie camp. The soundtrack also fits into the overall ensemble.

From the start the film got boring, then we are introduced to this "box" that the divergent with full power can unlock the box. Woodley tries her best, but this sequel is not as good as the first one which was sad. But the effects are epic and Roth's storytelling and Robert Schwentke's direction is some what good, the sequel is just fine. Grade B- Expand

That's the plot in a nutshell. This time, different from "Divergent", the story gets darker and the action more intense. Everyone's been comparing this series to "The Hunger Games" and it's not worth it. While a bit toned down, this franchise got its' own backbone. Before I get to the flaws, let me tell why do I like this one better than its' predecessor. The stakes are higher and the pace faster, which adds the effect if in IMAX 3D. The actors are fine as well as the first one. Now, the flaws. Some scenes are a bit clunky. It's because of the script, which is the strength and the weakness of this movie. You'll see it when you do. But that doesn't stop me from liking it because it is plot-wise. Of course, that's just my opinion. If you like the first "Divergent" or visually arresting action sequence, watch it. It's thrilling, riveting, and intriguing. Really worth your time. Expand

Insurgent is almost twice the filmmaking of the first Divergent film. The directing has gone from "after school special" in too many places to very close to the production values and acting of recent Marvel movies.

With better direction, teh two leads shine even more brightly and the supporting cast is handled with unusallly deft sensitivity for a genre outing.

The Dauntless sim that is in the trailer is longer. For me it's the most memorable piece of action sci-fi filmmaking since the end of Doug Limon's Edge of Tomorrow, probably better known as Live, Die Repeat.

What sets Insurgent apart from marvel movies is the greater emotionality/ I liked it. I know it's there because of the young female audience; still, it's well done. Compare the emotional integrity of Insurgent with the lack of emotional integrity in Captain America Winter Soldier, and you see Insurgent measures up well to Marvel movies generally.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Apocalyptic genre, a few good action scenes scenes, excellent CGI, could have done better with the parts that were supposed to be so emotional but generally a nice entertaining piece, not sure its one of those you watch several times but one would look forward to the next installments. I think the story line was a little incoherent and blunt but the general darkness of the main character made up for the lazy flow. Compared to other movies I've seen, a 7 would be OK. Expand

much better screenplay for the movie than the book. Great special effects. I am not sure how the final movie Allegiant will end compared to the book. Good character acting. Worth a repeat viewing.

I like the premise of having the personalities separated and grouped. I would think that would make for less arguments. Maybe there's a key here to world peace by separation of certain types.

Unlike The Hunger Games and the first film in the series, Insurgent starts to veer away from the novel, making it hard for the fans, to envision just how they'll make the jump into the third book in the series. In what was once Chicago, the war between the factions has begun, and this time, no faction is safe from the Erudite. The intellectual faction has started collecting all the Divergent, in an attempt to open a mysterious box, that supposedly contains something that will change all their lives forever. Tris and Four are on the other-side, doing everything they can to stop the group from hunting the Divergents, whom they see as the key to changing everything. The first part of this film is an excellent representation of the novel and is every bit as exhilarating, but the second part veers off into a new direction. The films producers said they wanted to make the story easier for the casual fan to understand, and they did that, unfortunately, taking away the complexity of the story, takes away some of it's magic. As for the ending, it is completely different from the novel, leaving many to wonder if they'll make the third book into a film at all. Indeed they plan to, but it's hard to see just how they will go about doing it, after the events put in place by the end of this film. Shailene Woodley and Theo James returned for the sequel and again, they played the characters to tee, I really felt like these two were meant to play Tris and Four before the book was even set to be released on the big screen. Once again, the special effects, the acting, and the story are amazing, and this film would be worthy of five stars, if not for the ending that diverted too far away from the original story. Expand
