I didn't give it better than a 6 simply because the whole thing is pretty dark, serious business, though you get some nice resolutions in the end. By the way, knowing where this goes in book 3, I'm tempted to call it quits here... i'm not sure i want to see the third movie.

But the reveal at the end is pretty satisfying. Just wish the character of Tris was played by a more substantial actress, with more gravitas and presence. Shailene is too fragile looking, too B-class, she's not a good lead. Expand

The characters kept moving from place to place, where they did nothing much, and while I thought there will be some epic battle for which everyone was preparing , I somehow do not seem to remember it happening. The few good scenes do not really make up for the boring times, and while the first movie introduces the faction system and a lot of new elements that kept it interesting, the only thing new in "insurgent" is that artifact. And that is hardly interesting. This movie reminds me all too well of some "hunger games: something something" episode.
Well, see you next episode.

It still got its moments with amusement and great but somewhat flawed characters, but the lack of unpredictability and a story that deserves to be geeked-out, not overly hyped, makes the whole movie so forgettable that you won't even remember that you did watch it.

This movie was very entertaining the actors & actresses did a great job but the story was meh yup I said it.

Story - Tris must stop Jeanine and open a box that is literally the entire movie.

Audio - Like I said everyone did splendidly. However I feel like the Soundtrack could have been a bit better Divergent had a better OST than this one.

Quality - Amazing **** Amazing the Special FX used in this Movie are very unique and cool to me its 1 of the things this movie does right.

Characters - Jeanine is an evil **** but a very entertaining one. Eric is a douche-bag who brings suspense to a few scenes. Peter is hilarious and a backstabbing bastard. Caleb is Caleb. Evelyn is sexy and also a very interesting character. Tris is...... I don't know she's annoying 1 minute and entertaining the next.

Overall - The conclusion of the movie was disappointing and anticlimactic. I of course love the ending scene with Evelyn & Jeanine but that was the only part of the end that I liked. The book was probably better. My opinion of the Divergent Series is that building the Factions was the stupidest idea anyone could have come up with to create peace & that everyone in the Factions are Divergent they just don't know it someone special named Tris had to tell them.

Tris - hey idiots your all Divergent I'm just 100% Divergent.

People - What does that mean?

Tris - It means all of you are boring and I'm more entertaining & unique so I'm special.

People - **** you Divergent ****.

Tris - Your just jealous of my awesomeness.

But it was also neat to see the world fleshed out, and to see the homes and peoples of the other factions and the breadth of life within their walled city. The dystopian backdrop of urban decay was well used in this movie, as they're always moving in and around ruins. The plot seemed more developed and focused in this movie, although there were several frustrating moments when it seemed like everyone was just making the worst decisions possible in the moment. Overall, I thought it was a neat movie, and definitely more interesting than the first; I expect I'll see the final installment in theatres, although I can't imagine I'd line up opening weekend for the chance. For the love of God, can we please not compare this series to The Hunger Games?! Yes, is still makes a handful of filmmaking errors, but it does a great job on improving the original's un-originals.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This film had a good cast and was directed very well. It was an interesting action packed film in most parts but I found I was quite bored in some parts as there was far too much talking. This would be a nice end to the divergent series as you will see at the end they all find there city is not the only place left but instead there is more outside the walls, but of course they will probably make several more films and spoil the divergent series. "Maze Runner" and "Divergent" were two of the most evident cases, with scripts and source material that, in everything, remind us of "Hunger Games".

In this film, the follow-up of "Divergent", we will see Jeannine's rise to power and the escape of Tris and Four. They lost friends and family in the military coup against Abnegation, and they take refuge with the Amity. The truce, however, is short: while Jeannine needs to find a specific, particularly strong Divergent, who opens a box where the Founders recorded a message, Four will find an unlikely ally, determined to overthrow the Erudite: his mother, Evelyn, who all assumed to be dead.

Personally, I think the film is a very dignified continuation, which honors the predecessor and entertains the audience quite well. Nevertheless, and like the first film, the script suffers from serious logic problems. For example, the strange way in which Tris looks traumatized and in shock with the events at the end of the previous film and quickly overcomes this, being able to fight. I think it would have been better for the film to follow the original book more closely, which was not done.

Imported from the previous film, the cast is quite good and competent. Shailene Woodley is beautiful, and I was surprised to see her without her long hair, but it was a change of look that fits the film and marks how much the character was marked by the previous events. The actress, moreover, did a good job. Theo James was also excellent, particularly in the action scenes, and I feel that he had more space and screen time to work here. Miles Teller is good, but hateful, and Jai Courtney is even more hateful, brutish and sadistic than in the first movie, which was great, given that the character demanded it. Kate Winslet goes from coldness to absolute inhumanity and transforms Jeannine into a potential genocide, while her arch rival, Evelyn, was brilliantly played by Naomi Watts, clearly implying that she is not, and will never be, a good option to rule the city. On the negative side, I was sad to see the way Zoe Kravitz almost disappeared from the film and I hated the constant changes in loyalty of Ansel Elgort's character.

Technically, the film is visually impressive. The cinematography is excellent, vibrant and sharp, and I loved the landscapes of a half-destroyed and decadent Chicago, of dry rivers and lakes and devastated buildings. Incredible, but not coherent: if the entire human population was there, wouldn't more space be needed? Why not rebuild the buildings? Didn't they have two hundred years of peace to do so? Another thing I liked and found amazing was the action and fighting sequences. Really well executed. The sets and costumes were very well done, the highlight being the Amity headquarters, which looks like a mix of futuristic planting and a hippie camp. The soundtrack also fits into the overall ensemble.

That's the plot in a nutshell. This time, different from "Divergent", the story gets darker and the action more intense. Everyone's been comparing this series to "The Hunger Games" and it's not worth it. While a bit toned down, this franchise got its' own backbone. Before I get to the flaws, let me tell why do I like this one better than its' predecessor. The stakes are higher and the pace faster, which adds the effect if in IMAX 3D. The actors are fine as well as the first one. Now, the flaws. Some scenes are a bit clunky. It's because of the script, which is the strength and the weakness of this movie. You'll see it when you do. But that doesn't stop me from liking it because it is plot-wise. Of course, that's just my opinion. If you like the first "Divergent" or visually arresting action sequence, watch it. It's thrilling, riveting, and intriguing. Really worth your time. Expand

The characters are not explored on, the guns are fired more often and Tris got a boy cut. That is the difference between Divergent and Insurgent. The flabby writing holds the movie down but the "ohmygosh" scenes factor rises and it delivers good acting from Woodley, James and Elgort. What doesn't click, is that the story is rummaged through the action scenes, which makes Insurgent another science fiction action flick that features, a bad score, cheesy twists and a flabby, yet interesting plot. Kate Winslet has lost all her charm, Four is less badass, and Miles Teller is in this again for some reason. Director Robert Schwnetke improves over his horrible, R.I.P.D and directs better, with slick camera shots are more emotion as an extra. Overall, Insurgent is a step down from it's complex predecessor, that features flabby writing and story, okay acting and a bad music score. There is a lot of action though. Expand

Not only Insurgent is just as stupid, plothole-ridden, inconsistent and boring as Divergent, but it's more of all those things; everything flows in a sequence of coincidences, character development always fails, as characters change dramatically in a matter of seconds, there are absolutely no believable villains nor heroes.

Plus, you might think you're not really into story, you just want to see some action. Fine, but go look elsewhere, as there is very little here, and is so filled with cheap CGI your eyes will hurt afterwards. Besides, all the action is constantly interrupted by the protagonists' fifth-grade romantic discussions. Speaking of that, this entire thing is abismally written: for the length of the film, there is not one dialogue that isn't full of clichés and half-sentences.

Enjoy the slo-mo bit near the end where the parade of Woodley goofy faces is displayed for all the world to see. She works so much better when she's in independent productions, playing real characters, rather than this so-called heroine who is in trouble, needs saving, is saved, is unsure, needs confirmation, is reassured, is told what to do, does the opposite, needs saving. Eventually she comes out as the hero, but we don't quite get to see why, as everything she's done before that leads you to believe she's worthless.

Insurgent is almost twice the filmmaking of the first Divergent film. The directing has gone from "after school special" in too many places to very close to the production values and acting of recent Marvel movies.

With better direction, teh two leads shine even more brightly and the supporting cast is handled with unusallly deft sensitivity for a genre outing.

The Dauntless sim that is in the trailer is longer. For me it's the most memorable piece of action sci-fi filmmaking since the end of Doug Limon's Edge of Tomorrow, probably better known as Live, Die Repeat.

What sets Insurgent apart from marvel movies is the greater emotionality/ I liked it. I know it's there because of the young female audience; still, it's well done. Compare the emotional integrity of Insurgent with the lack of emotional integrity in Captain America Winter Soldier, and you see Insurgent measures up well to Marvel movies generally.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Apocalyptic genre, a few good action scenes scenes, excellent CGI, could have done better with the parts that were supposed to be so emotional but generally a nice entertaining piece, not sure its one of those you watch several times but one would look forward to the next installments. I think the story line was a little incoherent and blunt but the general darkness of the main character made up for the lazy flow. Compared to other movies I've seen, a 7 would be OK. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first movie was decent, but maybe because it was more preoccupied with showing us the characteristics of each faction and how society works in the city. The plot as far as we knew it was decent in quality and it was supposed to stay that way or at least get better. Some fighting scenes here and there, new characters, possibly subplots and watching how each major character would develop in a more significant way; that was I was hoping for Insurgent, at least it was what I expected. But, as always, I was disappointed by the big budget teenage oriented excuse of a movie.
First big disappointment, the brooding fighting machine of a boyfriend does just that, he somehow always wins hand-to-hand combat.....which is predictable and boring. What's boring even more is the fact that besides playing "Rambo" he is just another love-sick promising leader who does nothing his character promises except filling the screen with tattoos and staring lovingly into Shailene Woodley's eyes .....thrilling.
Tris on the other hand kind of suffers the same thing. Except, the director decides that in order to convince the audience that she is changing and toughening up, they film a scene with her cutting her hair short, almost perfectly (if I tried that alone in the mirror I would look like a fought a monkey, and it won)...... mad hairdresser skills. She keeps whining about guilt and fear through the whole movie, except the scenes with the staring and loving thing. I would imagine that after actually killing people she would be a little more toughened up mentally/emotionally etc; but missing mommy is a priority in this case, I guess.
People keep shifting alliances, nobody is willing to think it through, make a plan, use the brain...something. They mostly fight for power in such simplistic ways it is OVERDONE. Also, apparently Four has a mom who is the leader of Factionless, who are heavily armed and want revenge, who they help in overthrowing the Erudite queen....which was the only decent character (goddammit Kate Winslet does not deserve this **** role).
At the end, there is life outside the wall (duh!...you've seen birds, obviously there is fresh water and other animals, ergo possibly humans), there is a shift in power, from one crazy **** to another and Divergents are the solution not the problem according to a 200 year old lady in a message who practically admitted the whole city was an experiment and the people are just lab rats. Also, the Erudite "dictator on heels" dies before anybody asks the question: if Divergents are the solution that means non-divergents are the problem, then where the **** does that puts us lab rats?
Intelligent life-form outside the wall and no contact? I smell an equally **** movie in the future.
And yes, it was that bad, 2 whole hours of bad....but the soundtrack sounds cool, got new songs for my ipod. :D

The timeline is compressed to an almost ridiculous degree, with the events covered comprising both the second and most of the third novel, making for a fragmented and oftentimes unbelievable series of apparently ill-conceived decisions resulting in totally hole-filled plot. The performances are solid, but unremarkable, though some of the action sequences are quite good. Cinematography is occasionally excellent, though other moments are difficult to focus on. The pacing is very fast, and the storyline and exposition feel rushed and incomplete. It's not entirely without merit, but if you haven't read the novels, I anticipate the experience would be disengaging and confused. One of the most insipid, unintelligent films I've ever seen. Insurgent makes no effort to be coherent or consistent, and suffers from terrible pacing.

The first half of the movie is a rapid fire mash of action scenes, so unbelievable and poorly thought-out that I thought they were all part of a simulation. At one point early in the film, Tris and Four start a brawl with some innocent people, killing many of them, and then Four suddenly establishes they are allies and everyone acts like nothing happened. Only a few days after the first film, Jeanine suddenly has a massive army of ninja-warriors that spray submachine guns one-handed while zip lining between skyscrapers. Somehow Jeanine is cranking out fantastic new anti-divergent technology on a daily basis; if they can engineer and mass-produce mind-control darts and handheld divergent scanners in a matter of days, why were any of the events in the first film necessary?

Characters switch allegiance at a whim, often with no explanation, and no one ever questions them.

The core of the plot is a magic box with a special message from the benevolent founders of the city, that kills anyone who tries to open it. What?!

Utter garbage. Stay away.

Leave it to Hollywood to completely screw up book-to-movie renditions. Not only was it completely inaccurate, but they utterly destroyed the characters and their relationships. Sure, I expected them to include a bunch of lovey-dovey romantic bull**** that wasn't ever in existence, but c'mon this is uncalled for! The primary sin was crossing the main theme of the series, female agency. In this blasphemy, Tris was forced to be rescued multiple times and to rely on Four in all decisions. Whereas in the book, she was fighting her own battles, on her own, and constantly going against Four. Furthermore, every major (plot point) thought and decision Tobias has in the movie was originally Tris' in the book. Evelyn is completely ignored-and misrepresented-until Janine says her name at the end; Janine is killed in the movie when she is an active character in the third book. Every major woman in the movie was downplayed and their power/agency was handed over to the male characters. You've outdone yourself Hollywood; you owe a serious apology to Victoria Roth!
Note: this is not an exhaustive list of sins

Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris's family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

To those who haven't seen my first review of Divergent basically I thought the movie was alright and I was kind of surprise that I didn't hate it as I thought I will just because of these stupid books adaptations that we get today trying to catch some money or try to be the next Harry Potter which normally backfires. I wasn't like full on excited for Insurgent just because the trailer looked pretty bad and really laughable with it's goofy CGI. But that didn't stop people getting really excited for it and that's most of the teens or just the people who have read the book are here to support or b'tch about the film, whatever comes to they minds. But I came across an old friend that I use to hang around with that has seen the movie and told me that, "It's the best movie ever. I think it's a five out of five star's rating for me", oh that same person is the same person who give Fifty Shades of Grey a positive rating and give the great Whiplash a negative response. After seeing the movie myself I have to say that I'm not really impress at all with the film, actually to be honest I think this movie is a bloated mess.

Let me just get the positive stuff out the way first: Shailene Woodley in the movie did a decent performance and performed some of the action scenes very well but most of it is performed by a trained stunt woman.

Octavia Spencer was really good in this movie. She's in a couple of scenes in the movie and it's a same as a brilliant actress she is only getting small parts in recent movies. But anywhere was great for what scenes she had. The rest of cast like Miles Teller, Theo James and Ansel Elgort all three did great in the movie as well.

Now for the down falls: Kate Winslet all through at the movie dose nothing really treating just standing behind a computer screen ordering attacks on people. A complete was of talent from another great actress.

The visual effect's at times look fine and okay for the most part, but for most of the movie the effect's look a bit unfinished like it's only one more thing to do before the visual effect's are done. It looks laughable and over the top during it's action scenes. So overall visual effect's not so good.

I'm not going to spoil the ending to the movie but let me just say it ended in a way that it's trying to be like Inception, actually the whole film is trying to be Inception when you think about it. The book came out around the time Inception was out maybe the author cope cat the groundbreaking elements from Inception. If fans of the book see this review let me just say this is the second book feels like Inception, correct me or not.

Overall Insurgent sometimes doesn't know what it wants to be at times with it's mess plot. To those who like the movie that's fine but to me I will forget this movie about a couple of weeks time.

"The repetitive of science fiction movie that comes from best selling novel "

Here we go again , having another science fiction movie that based from the best selling novel just like The Hunger Games and Maze Runner.

Honestly i don't know what to expected from Insurgent and that's from a lot of reason , first off the Divergent ( 2013 ) movie last year is not exactly a good movie i mean it's not bad but it's not good or memorable either , second is the director which now is Robert Schwentke personally i really like his RED ( 2010 ) movie but i'm also really really hate R.I.P.D ( 2013 ) i mean i don't even know why Lionsgate decided to choose him , since his latest movie is really terrible.

Insurgent is a movie that has a lot of problem for sure but there's three positive thing about this movie that i have to say.

first is the CG of this movie is pretty good , second is Shailene Woodley is still giving us a great performance and the last one is director Robert Schwentke himself looking pretty okay with his directing.

But in the end Insurgent has too much problem that just drag this movie down a lot and that problem is the screenplay which is terrible.

I understand the reason they have to change stuff from books to movie but this screenplay is really really bad , first off the movie is really over the top i mean our main character is basically she can jump slide smash thick glass without putting much effort and that's making the movie kind of a meaning less because the main character can do pretty much anything she wants without much of a problem.

the second problem and probably the biggest , is the repetitive of the plot and screenplay especially if you watch this science fiction movie lately like The Hunger Games or Maze Runner ( 2014 ) you can pretty much guest everything about this movie especially the ending which is really really predictable and it's not even that smart either.

I mean i don't even sure that the Insurgent movie problem because this problem is a lot about these science fiction movies that came from novel , it is just so similar in a lot of ways that just makes me kind a boring about these type of movie and i don't think Hollywood will stop this train soon (especially the next movie of Divergent series is separate into two parts) so we will have to hope for a better science fiction that based from best selling novel movie.

To be fair Insurgent is not a bad movie but it's just so repetitive so predictable and the characters is too powerful that just make everything in the movie meaningless .

Despite having a different director Insurgent looks familiarDivergent - the first book - was interesting but the first movie was even better, way better if you ask me. They managed to cast great actors and make a realistic futuristic movie. Despite having a different director Insurgent looks familiar I easily slipped back into a world I was already familiar with. The movie is visually impressive, even though it looks a bit too CGI-ish for my taste, making the film not as grounded as Divergent was so at times it feels like watching a video game or an animated version of it.

The acting is OK, I mean it's a good cast so what they bring to the table fits the story and the emotional journey these characters have been through. But - because of course there is one - Theo James' (Four) age is seriously starting to show. I know he's only 30 - and Teller is 28 - but in the first movie it didn't seem as weird that he's with Tris (Woodley) but next to 46 years old Naomi Watts, who looks 35, maybe forty, it's really weird. They look like brothers and sisters at best, they could have aged Watts or cast someone else completely because how young was she when she had him? 12?
It will be even weirder to see her playing opposite Ray Stevenson (Marcus Eaton) - Four’s dad - who'll look like a dirty old man next to her, which is probably why we’ll see very little of that.

I wish these aspects of the film were the only ones I had a problem with but on top of all of that Insurgent lacks rhythm. It's missing the slow, intense build up in which the tension and the action grows to an entertaining climax but it never doesn't. Don’t get me wrong it is action-packed, a rich adventure of a film but whenever the tension builds up it quickly dies down to go back up again at some point and that's how it is throughout the movie. It comes and goes in waves but never rides on the high the previous action scenes gave you.

Although, it's faithful to the book Insurgent was a bit of a disappointment I expected better. It’s only slightly more entertaining than the book, they could have done better. @wornoutspines

The point of this movie is to discover why the events of the first movie have transpired and, when the movie ends, leaves you wondering how things are going to unfold in the third and fourth movies (if you haven't read the books). Most of the good of the first movie still plays here, but I couldn't help but feel like Insurgent sold itself short. The big reveal toward the end is intriguing, but the problem I had was I wasn't as invested in the story by the time I got there. If the Divergent Series is going to avoid disaster, the folks in charge of making this movie need to push the cast and writers harder. There are too many inconsistencies in the acting performances to sell the emotional turmoil that is supposed to be eating up Tris and select other cast members. Basically, there is no anchor as Tris is no Jennifer Lawrence and thus the film doesn't force audiences to be immersed into this fictional world. I'll still watch the rest of the series, but it will be a tragedy if the next pair of films can't learn from the mistakes of this particular chapter. Expand

But rather than take control of her own destiny (coif-cutting aside) until the end, where even then she can’t just bark an order but instead has to convince Four with, “Just trust me,” she is relegated to playing (essentially) a damsel in distress. Granted, she’s got a mean right hook when she’s given the chance to use it, but that occasional flash of aggressiveness cannot overcome the way her character is so passively drawn. Expand

Possible, but the actors appear to be the same age on screen, as Naomi Watts is made up to look extremely young and it is quite distracting), terrible (I REPEAT, TERRIBLE, HORRENDOUS) dialogue that treats the audience like a bunch of mindless idiots (maybe they are), Woodley's constant switching between a strong female lead and a weak, helpless damsel in distress when it is convenient for the plot, the gaping plot holes and unexplained questions, as well as a large amount of obvious errors (for instance, Woodley cutting off her hair with crude scissors while looking in a mirror yet walking away with a hairstyle that would require an electric razor and a professional cosmetologist). It doesn't get much lower than this, folks. Don't even get me started on how this movie and book series was just a cash cow jumping onto the Hunger Games bandwagon to begin with. Don't get me wrong, The Hunger Games is a fantastic trilogy that I believe will go down in history as American literature (I'm dead f*cking serious- it's changed the attitude of the country)- but Veronica Roth saw it as a trend she could jump onto in the world of young adult literature so she could earn some green. Always knew the books were terrible, didn't think it was possible for the movies to be even worse. Ah, but they are. Expand

Unfortunately there isn't much of a reason to get invested in it's characters or world. It's generic dystopian world is filled with talented actors playing generic archetypes we've seen before. Thankfully they did do a good job at ramping up the pace from the first movie. It doesn't happen too much in the plot department, but there is some visually impressive action to hold audiences attention this time around. Just hold in your disbelief that the only people capable of aiming around here are our heroes.

The movie definitely has excellent performances all around. It's a shame the cast isn't giving more to work with. Woodley is left to mope about how "deadly" she is, Theo James is left to mindlessly follow her, and Winslet is just there so the film can have a villain. With all of these actors left with little interesting to do, the only character worth rooting for is Miles Teller's, who was annoying and pointless in the last film. Here he is the comic relief character and really the saving grace of the cast.

With the plot there isn't much to say. It isn't only until the end where things actually happen. Until the last few minutes all we get is a seemingly endless build up to a revolution while "Tris" (Woodley) deals with her new sense of regret. Maybe it would have been more interesting had either side of the plot been more interesting and less generic. Unfortunately things here feel familiar. That's because we've seen it before.

The movie is made more watchable than it's predecessor though thanks to the increased amount of action. The enemies the heroes face might be incapable of proving to be an actual threat, but at least there's some flash onscreen, and what pretty flash it is. Stunning visual effects create some really cool looking scenarios. These scenes add some much needed life into the overall movie, as well as the series as a whole.

"Insurgent" is a slight improvement. Unfortunately though it is just another dystopian future YA novel turned movie. The same themes and even the same characters are presented once again only in a less interesting package. One that's going to have a hard time pleasing even it's intended audience. It lacks the punch of Hunger Games, the mystery of Maze Runner, and the heart of any of it's competition. It's not bad, but it can get pretty darn boring. The few bits of added flair can't save it from mediocrity.

Unlike The Hunger Games and the first film in the series, Insurgent starts to veer away from the novel, making it hard for the fans, to envision just how they'll make the jump into the third book in the series. In what was once Chicago, the war between the factions has begun, and this time, no faction is safe from the Erudite. The intellectual faction has started collecting all the Divergent, in an attempt to open a mysterious box, that supposedly contains something that will change all their lives forever. Tris and Four are on the other-side, doing everything they can to stop the group from hunting the Divergents, whom they see as the key to changing everything. The first part of this film is an excellent representation of the novel and is every bit as exhilarating, but the second part veers off into a new direction. The films producers said they wanted to make the story easier for the casual fan to understand, and they did that, unfortunately, taking away the complexity of the story, takes away some of it's magic. As for the ending, it is completely different from the novel, leaving many to wonder if they'll make the third book into a film at all. Indeed they plan to, but it's hard to see just how they will go about doing it, after the events put in place by the end of this film. Shailene Woodley and Theo James returned for the sequel and again, they played the characters to tee, I really felt like these two were meant to play Tris and Four before the book was even set to be released on the big screen. Once again, the special effects, the acting, and the story are amazing, and this film would be worthy of five stars, if not for the ending that diverted too far away from the original story. Expand

“The Divergent Series: Insurgent Review”

(Introduction)

Insurgent is the next installment in the Divergent series which is another series comprised of young adult novels turned into movies. This particular installment changed directors and is directed by Robert Schwentke who's last film was R.I.P.D... yeah that's not a good thing. Last year's Divergent was bad. It did nothing to separate itself from another popular young adult series The Hunger Games and on top of that, the film ripped off The Hunger Games with a very similar rebellious female lead Beatrice “Tris” Prior played by Shailene Woodley. The movie suffered from lack of action, dull characters, and a plot that ultimately wasn't explained. In other words, if you didn't read the book, then the film didn't do much to persuade you to do so. So how does Insurgent stack up against its predecessor? Well I'll tell you now, it's a better movie but not by much.

(Presentation)

The presentation for Insurgent is just as boring and uninspired as the presentation for Detergent, erm, excuse me, Divergent was. Yeah Mr. Schwentke, it was a very good idea to have the “Insurgent” title plastered on screen while we watch a needlessly slow motion opening shot of Tris running through the woods. It was a good idea to have the movie start with an opening monologue by Kate Winslet's character, Jeanine Matthews. It was a good idea to just thrust the viewer into this story with absolutely no build up at all. So if you didn't watch the first movie, you'll have no idea what's going on. Not that it matters because what's going on isn't clear or interesting anyway so... well, it is what it is. Presentation's bad, period.

(Characters and Actors)

So just naming the important characters and actors, Shailene Woodley returns as Tris, Theo James returns as Four, Ansel Elgort returns as Tris's brother, Caleb, Miles Teller returns as Peter Hayes, and Kate Winslet returns as Jeanine Matthews. Some other characters return from the first movie with actors such as Zoe Kravitz and Jai Courtney but because they're given so little to do in the movie to the point of irrelevance, I'm not even going to mention them at all. A notable actress to mention is Naomi Watts whom plays Theo James's mother in the movie. Ultimately however and insultingly for a performer of her talent, her character is wasted in the movie, may as well have been cut entirely.

Performance wise, everyone in this movie besides Shailene Woodley looks bored in this especially Kate Winslet who gives a terrible performance. However, I'm not going to place the blame on Winslet because when you have bad material to work with on top of an mediocre to average director on the project, you're guaranteed to be bad. George Lucas's Star Wars prequels became proof of that. As another word for Shailene Woodley, she really showed her acting prowess in The Fault in Our Stars. That movie for me in regards to her skills as an actress was definitely needed considering the only two movies I saw her in prior to this film is Divergent and White Bird in a Blizzard, both of which are bad, the latter of which is terrible. In here, she gives an acceptable performance and unlike everyone else who appear as if they just showed up to receive a paycheck, Woodley does seem as if she's actually engaged in the scenes she's in but like I said with Dakota Johnson in Fifty Shades of Grey, she's not saving the story in this movie.

(Story)

The most important part of any movie, the story in Insurgent is ridiculously forgettable. This is one of those films where if the film has nothing to offer you as the viewer in regards to character development and cohesive story telling, then it manipulates its audience by chucking a bone at them, that bone being an action sequence. I'll just say it right now, the action in this movie doesn't offer anything that's already been seen before and like the majority of the movie, it's boring. From the train sequence which should've been cut down to the nighttime sequence, when they're being ambushed, it's all boring. The story in this movie is boring and not only is it boring, it's damn hard to follow. When I say that, I mean that this movie and the ultimate problem that I have with the Divergent series to begin with as someone who's never and will never read the novels, I still don't know what they're ultimately trying to achieve. You look at other young adult series like Harry Potter or The Hunger Games. It's very clear, crystal clear what those stories are about. Here, I'm lost as all hell.

Why separate this population into factions? Well to try and control society of course but to what purpose, why? Who's really pulling the strings? What's the true purpose of the factions? Why do these Dauntless jack***** run around randomly performing parkour? Why do these factions seem like a ripoff of the Harry Potter Houses? Why does Tris come off as a try hard Katniss persona? Why does this world have an uninspired dirty aesthetic look which also appears like a ripoff from The Hunger Games? These are all questions and down right issues that I had with the first film and unfortunately, they still apply here.

So from what I understand, the majority of this movie is about Kate Winslet trying to open this box or whatever the hell it is. Now this box will only open for a Divergent which again is someone who contains qualities representative of all the factions, Abnegation, Dauntless, um, Restless, Erudite, Great Value, whatever the hell you want to call them, it really doesn't matter. Now Kate Winslet can't just use any Divergent, this Divergent has to be one hundred percent pure the representative quality of all the factions. Okay movie, yall are just reaching into bs territory right now but I'm still with the movie. And obviously Tris is this pure Divergent and is the only person capable of unlocking this box or whatever it is, there's no spoiler there, it's only obvious. So my point is, the entire movie is about unlocking this thing which will obviously shed some great revelation. And that's the ultimate problem with the plot in this movie.

First of all, this movie is nearly an hour and fifty minutes going on two hours long. The movie bs you for a long time by throwing action sequence after action sequence at you and oh! Remember this character from the first movie?! Oh you mean the characters from the first movie who actually had a role to play in the plot like Zoe Kravitz's character or Jai Courtney's character? Or how about Ansel Elgort whom by the way like many other performers is completely wasted here. There's a scene in this movie which takes place just after the redundant train sequence in which Tris's brother tells both her and Theo Jame's Four, “you know what guys, I'm not cut out for this”. “All this running around and being a fugitive, the factionless, it's not for me”. “I'll tell you what, I'm going to betray you and go over to the dark side”. “At least then, I can take a shower and get some grub”. Obviously I summarized it in my own words but that's pretty much what they do with this guy and after watching Elgort's performance in The Fault in Our Stars, I wanted to see him have more of a dominant role in this movie. But he essentially plays a coward.

Another actor who's wasted in this is Miles Teller. The entire movie he plays an a-hole but then at the end of the movie, something happens with his character that made me go “What?” “That doesn't even make any sense, who wrote this?” All this crap and Teller you can tell doesn't even want to be in this movie. He looks so bored in this. The man just came off an Oscar nominated film Whiplash with J.K. Simmons. He doesn't want to do this ****. That's one of the biggest problems with this movie. Talent is just wasted. Character potential is just spilled from the script like a dirty bucket of water.

The big revelation getting back to it, isn't even satisfying. While it answers the question of what the purpose was in the existence of these factions which the first film didn't even explain, ultimately it just raises more questions. This is because director Robert Schwentke is directing the last book in this series which like damn Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, and now this bs is split into two parts. Why do we have all these final installments in these young adult films being split into two films. Because these Hollywood producers and executives know that drones will fill the theater and double their income. With Harry Potter, it made sense. There was enough material in the last book to warrant a big two part finale for a franchise that had been around for ten years. Twilight and The Hunger Games though was not/is not warranted a split because it's not necessary. This is no different and it gets back to the point of this movie which feels shriveled in its story because it feels like they're holding back story elements to save for this two part finale. I mean god damn, is The Maze Runner going to do this too? And what's next after that, oh the Fifty Shades trilogy of course tsk...

Another thing that I've heard is that there are many differences between this film and the novel it's based off of, almost to the point where it's a completely different story. I can't warrant this to be true because I haven't read the book but as a film, Insurgent falls well, short. The only thing that I can say was kinda cool was the simulation sequences near the end with the city breaking apart and everything. It was some impressive CGI but it's nothing that was too mind blowing and when Shailene Woodley comes out and she has to randomly fight a clone of herself, that's when the movie lost me completely. Okay movie! I throw my hands up. I surrender, I throw in the towel because clearly this is not for me. Yall want to act like this story is deeper than what it truly is, I'll tell you what, you filmmakers better strip this and show it the way it is because for the people who actually can appreciate good storytelling, you're not fooling anyone with this. Yes, there may possibly be a good story here, but if it is, it's in the novels tucked away somewhere, it's definitely not in the movies if it even exists in the first place.

(Music)

The music, I can sum this up in one statement. Who gives a god damn? It's copy and paste action movie music. Most of the time you won't even notice it's there. I would advise to skip the soundtrack, cause it's not interesting, at all.

(Enjoyment and Verdict)

Well while a better film came out this time around, this is still a boring movie. The plot is still uninteresting and convoluted simply because it refuses to tell what the “point” to all this is. The characters are still uninteresting and having Shailene Woodley cut her hair doesn't make her more of a badass either if that's what they were going for, I don't know. The soundtrack is copy and paste and it's boring. There're too many action sequences in here and they're uninspired. I mean, this is targeted to a teenage audience, the movie doesn't have to be good at that point. Here's my recommendations, this isn't a terrible movie but I didn't really enjoy it and it's not good by any stretch of the imagination. If you read the book and you enjoy the series then by all means check this out but for everyone else, I recommend a rental at best. Otherwise, if you didn't care for the first movie or even if you skipped the first movie altogether, then skip this.

There's nothing special about this. The Divergent films still come off as if they're trying to be The Hunger Games and that's because the producers behind this want some of that Hunger Games money. Commendable I suppose but that castrates your product in quality if you're just trying to copy what something else has already done with little to no meaningful originality.

Pros

• Shailene Woodley attempts to give a decent performance
• CGI can be cool to look at...

Cons

• Characters are still boring and bland, cut and paste young adult novel caricatures
• Wasted, Wasted, Wasted talent from big name actors • Redundant and frequent action sequences • Boring soundtrack which bleeds like a backdrop into oblivion within the background • Still has yet to find an identity, you're not The Hunger Games, stop trying to be that • What is this series about again?

WOW..that was mind-numbingly BAD! Believe me, I went in with pretty low expectations since I've seen the first installment and knew how bad it could be...but WOW...it surpassed all my expectations (NOT a good thing)...
I mean, the acting was so much worse than the first movie. The writing and dialogues were so bad that it was painful. The characterizations, especially Tris, was so bad that they/she could have been a walking potato for all the difference it would have made to the audience. On second thought, walking potatoes might actually have made the movie slightly interesting.... I just couldn't understand why Tris was so horrible (both in character and acting). This was like Gossip Girl and Reign rolled into one as far as annoying female leads go...Did WB make this movie??
Anyway, enough time wasted already just watching the movie...no need to waste more of my life writing any more of this review... but hey, if excessively crying female leads, with wanna-be bursts of toughness that go nowhere, and non-stop self recriminations are your thing, then you're in for a huge treat!

Really unimpressed with this one. Insurgent is a snooze-fest, so much so, I had to watch it in two separate sittings to get through the film. Dull characters with poor acting by ALL of the characters especially the lead actress. The story is predictable and boring. Many of the scenes feel rushed. It's as if they tried to fit in as much material as possible along with a bunch of mindless action scenes. The result is a bunch of loosely connected scenes where nothing is ever fleshed out or developed. I think this is a perfect example of a book adaptation where you try to throw way too much in and it creates a pretty bad film. However, it's not just the writing, as mentioned above, the performances were exceptionally bad all around.

I would only watch only if you're a big fan of the series. Otherwise, do something else more fun like washing dishes.

The acting was good, but the whole movie was structured so poorly that even the acting had a difficult time to show through. It is totally confusing, boring, doesn't flow well, can't begin to tell the good guys from the bad (although I think that is the point, but it was so bad you just aren't sure) and worst of all for me, some of the scenes where they use the movie's version of "technology" started me into epileptic seizures so I had to put my hands over my eye's once I caught on to the problem. The book(s) were so much better (usually they are), they had great plot lines you could follow, far more emotional stuff that was part of the whole, way too many changes completely from the books. I've seen good books turn into not great movies, but this is barely recognizable to the book. People change, their actions change, they leave out 80% of the book and replace another 30% with something completely different. I would have walked out on the movie even if I hadn't read the books. Having read the books (which were good) made me wonder if they weren't trying to rewrite the books. Expand

This oneA rather padded and meandering second instalment for the Divergent series that is definitely not as good as the first film. The problem in the main is that the earlier movie was more interesting as it was setting up the scenario. This one just becomes a kind of futuristic chase movie that is far too long. Plot points often lack clarity and whilst the film is eminently watchable the middle section drags noticeably. Shailene Woodley is a major asset as well as being a great little actress into the bargain. She out acts everyone else on screen even if Kate Winslet and Miles Teller have their moments. To get the most from proceedings it is advisable to have seen the earlier film if just for context. Naomi Watts is introduced here as a potential baddie but she doesn't really come into her own here. However, if the rather good ending is anything to go by, we can look forward to seeing a lot more of her next time when hopefully this film's failings are sorted out and improved upon. Finally, the special effects aren't bad, but there isn't really anything here that hasn't been seen before. Expand

The mystery box and the power hungry leaders!

This is not a bad sequel, I quite enjoyed it, but I think I liked 'Divergent' better. The story continued a very short after where it ended in the first. In this part, it was all about power hungry where many try to get that top post. On the other side, there will be an attempt to open a mystery box that found which might reveal some important detail about them.

Looked like a very good storyline, unpredictable stuffs, but not utilised to its full potential. Though the actors were good, especially Shailene was sexy in her short hairs. I think she came straight out of 'The Fault in Our Stars' to take up this role where her brother in this film was a boyfriend in that.

Visually as well very captivating with those great graphics and it is first digital 3D film in the series. It has numerous small twists, especially during decrypting the mystery box. So I felt the middle parts were the best part of the film.

I thought this film would take place outside the wall, but a new story was developed and still kept the mystery about the rest of the world. I don't know the book, but that's my disappointment. I hope the next film in the series would go beyond the wall and explore some new things. So I'm looking forward for the 'Allegiant'.

Tris is Divergent.

Not ten percent.
Not forty percent.
She is one hundred percent Divergent according to the Divergent scanner.
We are halfway into Insurgent when this is established for a fact by the bad guys who capture and subsequently scan her. What Divergent exactly is remains a mystery, but it has something to do with the ability to survive a set of trials in a computer generated world whose sole purpose seems to be to kill people when they fail the tests. These trials allow her to unlock the key to a secret power her mother died for. Not that Tris(Shailene Woodley ) volunteers for these tests. Not at all. Tris is forced by the nefarious Jeanine Matthews(Kate Winslet) who makes all Divergent people, mostly young girls on the face of it, go through these trials, thus making her a cold hearted killer.
Whatever Divergent is doesn't really matter, what is important is that Divergent makes Tris different(and you saw that coming don't ya?). And 100% Divergent makes her 100% different.

Insurgent is the second installment in a series of three I read afterwards. I just picked it because I wanted to see a movie like this and the picture on the cover looked the most interesting. I happened thus to pick the second one in a trilogy. So I might have missed some important knowledge and unfortunately I cannot find much explanation on the internet. Why, for instance, is almost everyone in this movie twenty something? Even Kate Winslet, playing the head baddie, has her face plastered over so the age gap between her and the rest of the cast and notably Shailene Woodley doesn't stand out to glaringly.
At first I thought there was a kind of Logan's run theme underpinning this story but it is not even remarked upon as curious that everyone in the movie is young, with only one or two people looking to be middle-aged. For a while I was fooled in thinking that this movie had a kind of Inception theme:, with the world that Tris thinks is real actually being a virtual full of young people like Second Life is filled with young avatars and as virtual as the computer generated world she undergoes her trials in.

There is actually a case to make for this concept, as almost the whole movie is filled with features that feel trite so to speak(some would say: lame), which made me think that at some moment in the movie it would be revealed that it is all an illusion and Tris is actually hooked up to a machine producing fantasies for her, like happened to humanity in the Matrix.
There is the 'Amish' theme, where people are dressed in more simple and rougher clothes. There is the 'hippy' theme were the peaceful faction, with long gowns and long hair for them ladies, including flowers in your hair, denounce all violence and ask Tris to leave cause Tris isn't like them. There are the science guys, cold and arrogant. There are the bad guys, dressed in black leathers and sufficiently cruel. There is a group of factionless on a train headed by a guy with a punk haircut and a leather coat and offensive attitude.
We get dished one run-of-the mill character after the other, all as cardboard thin as the next one. Tris in comparison looks all the more real when surrounded by these staple characters, which make the movie feel like a setup to some grand twist. It never happens.

What is left is a kind of replacement anger for a group of people that apparently thinks so low of their audience as to serve them plot that lacks any originality with characters that are as unoriginal as can be and dialog that is trite. The movie feels like a drag which is compounded by the fact that it is actually longer than your average feature. There is nothing memorable about this movie, hence it is utterly inconsequential. It fades from memory already.

For starters, it's not as good as Divergent. Yes, that movie had some problems but it was more exciting, more stylish, more emotional, more cerebral, more... well, everything. This one is so uninspired and boring for so much of its running time. As a result of the blandness it becomes much easier to realize how much is borrowed from the Hunger Games and The Matrix. Sure, the first one did this too but at least it did it entertainingly and with more intelligence than this one does. I read all the Divergent books (including “Four”) and I watched the Divergent movie. Now, some say that Insurgent is a better movie than Divergent. But that’s not much of an accomplishment.

This sequel is just too quick-paced and too desperate to move from one scene to another. I feel like everyone involved with “Insurgent” simply wanted to get it over with, so they could get cash in on the two-parter conclusion (Allegiant). Insurgent simply spends too much time advancing plot instead of spending meaningful time with the characters.

Insurgent has some impressive simulation scenes. While some simulations in the movie weren’t in the book, I didn’t really care that much because the sims were interesting. We see more of this universe’s dystopian Chicago, however it feels like a retread of what we’ve seen before. Not all the casting decisions in this movie were bad. (But Four’s mother looking younger than him? Really?)

However, the half-assed acting (from a majority of the actors, but not all), the rushed pace, the lack of character development and a general sense of unoriginality really bring the film down. With the first movie, audiences were somewhat obligated to give the new Divergent franchise a chance--but I feel like because of Insurgent that was one chance too many. If you liked Divergent, then by all means, watch “Insurgent”. You’ll probably like this movie.

*Everyone says that Shailene Woodley “carried” this movie. But I personally think she simply wasn’t as bad as everyone else. Her performance in the 1st film was better. *While Theo James might be a convincing Four, that doesn’t mean he’s a relatable or very interesting Four. (Or should I say...Tobias Eaton!) *Ansel Elgort looks REALLY bored and emotionless throughout the entire film; he has a blank, vacant facial expression in his scenes, in promotional photos, etc. Money and/or contractual obligations are the only reason he’s in Insurgent. *Jai Courtney is very capable in his villainous role, he makes Eric a captivating character. Nevertheless, he had more potential. *Kate Winslet is a lot less likable in Insurgent than in Divergent. All Jeanine does is stand around stoic-faced and say a few menacing lines. *Peter (Miles Teller) has too many sardonic one-liners, and could’ve been more of a funny anti-hero than he was.

The relationship between Tris and Four is really rushed. It is never given enough development (though at least their romance isn’t Insurgent’s primary focus). While I can see why there might be some attraction between the two, I think them having sex was unwarranted. How long have they known each other--a month?

Insurgent is anticlimactic. It’s not always--but it is too often--dull & boring. After two relatively disappointing films, I’m not sure the next two Divergent installments (Allegiant, Part 1 and 2) will be any better. Out of all the franchises I have seen split their finales into multiple films (Fast & Furious, Twilight, Harry Potter, THG, The Avengers: Infinity War) Divergent is the least deserving. With such little emphasis put on characters (something of a problem with “The Hunger Games” series, but to a lesser extent), I really doubt that the Allegiant book adaptation will be bearable. Some fans don’t even like the Allegiant book very much, so I think that the director and producers of Allegiant will need a lot of luck if they’re to turn this franchise around.

I have reviewed 40 movies (on Metacritic and IMDB) including the 2014 and 2015 films: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Fast and Furious 7, Taken 3, The Interview, Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Dracula Untold, The Maze Runner, Nightcrawler, The Equalizer, The Expendables 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Giver, Sharknado 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Edge of Tomorrow, X-Men Days of Future Past, Godzilla, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Lego Movie, DIVERGENT, Transcendence, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, and more.

I also review other TV shows, such as: Marvel’s Daredevil, Agent Carter, Empire (2015), The Flash, Arrow (Season 3), Gotham, The Last Ship, Sleepy Hollow, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD (Season 1 and 2), The 100, I Wanna Marry Harry, Crisis, Gang Related, and more. I also have reviewed the mobile Android games Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Clash of Clans, and Five Night's at Freddy's

It's better than its predecessor, "Divergent". The cast is great, especially Miles Teller who gives a pretty likable performance, even if its character is totally underutilized and uninteresting. In fact, all the characters are mediocre and the screenplay tries hard to make the viewers care about what they're seeing, but it just fails badly. The movie, however, unlike the first one, is much better paced and ends much more quickly. But ultimately, a terrific cast can't save an already weak franchise from the muddled history that plagues it.

Final Score: 5/10.

I loved this movie; I loved the first movie. Shailene Woodley has become one of my favorite actresses. This movie has action, suspense, made me angry and made me cry. So I enjoyed it and would watch it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It was an ok movie. I liked first one better, here the whole story basically revolved around some sort of box with a secret message inside which turned out to be just Trish's mother speaking. I mean such a buildup for just that. Also most of it was quite predictable, even though at the start I was intrigued by what will happen it slowly became less and less interesting. Especially at the end, the first movie was much more interesting because it showed us the concept of how they split the society and everything that, here though, as we already know that, they didn't add much new to the scheme of things, plus the whole ending with that machine wasn't quite interesting to me. Çok beklendik. Sıkıcı ve oyunculuk olarak da bir o kadar kötü... Peki arkadaş neden 4 verdin dersen açıkçası fikir fena değil ve ikinci film olmasının da bir miktar etkisi var.

33 - Equilibrium. 44 - this trash. Critics, what are you smoking?

About film - boring action, lots of plot holes and overall brain numbing script, setting that makes no sense.

The Divergent Series begins to get stale with Insurgent and unfortunately, (despite major fanboys and fangirls) this one begins to turn the series upside-down.

A talented cast and a cool mix of somehow thrilling stunts fail in the attempt of saving this unremarkable and truly unsatisfying cinematic adaptation from Veronica Roth's novel.

Though an improvement of its predecessor, Insurgent is still riddled with choppy action, uneven performances, and a convoluted plot that only will impress hardcore fans of the book.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent is struggling with a lot of problems, such as the plot holes and changes. Didn't Schwenkte like the book or something? I guess he only cared about the special effects than focusing on the actual storyline. Another problem is that a lot of characters were left out, or didn't even say that much as they were supposed to (like Uriah and Lynn). I bet that if Neil had stayed, this movie would be like its own version of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Like the first movie, you could do worse when it comes to YA novel adaptations. This movie also improved some aspects from the original. However, it still ends up being a worse sequel due to having several story issues and notably worse acting.

The best in the series, but still not great. In my opinion the acting improved and the story did also. The story is still filled with plot holes. Also, you have to watch the first to understand the story.

By far my favorite of the Divergent movies and second favorite of the books, Insurgent shines on both book and screen! My only flaw with this movie is that strayed from the book.

Well if they had done one certain thing in the first film. When they had the chance to do and it only to become the major plot point of the second film. Then I call this sequel pointless filler/padding. It was ok for a low budget sci-fi affair.

This sequel is a step down from its predecessor. It really is obvious when the cast is uninterested to put effort into making this film succeed.
