I love Begins dearly, but in comparison it feels more basic and "studio". By no means are those bad things necessarily, but you can see Nolan evolving and pushing the storytelling forward as the trilogy goes on. There is a true charm to the simplicity and focus of Begins (not to mention the badass Batman moments and imagery), but there's just a lot more to chew on in Rises so-to-speak Expand

DK is a great film but aside from Joker's chaos and the slow burning progression of Harvey Dent I don't find much else in the film to be too great, here I thought all the cast were sublime and the likes of Bale, Caine, Oldman and Freeman who were regulars turned in arguably their best performances, and between Hardy, Hathaway and Levitt I thought the supporting cast were collectively stronger in their performances even if Ledger's individual performance likely remains the best in the trilogy. I loved the messages and symbols the film tackled: the message about Gotham being a city not worth saving that was present in Begins and DK was again explored with the citizens acting exactly how Bane believed them to do, Levitt's ideals of moral justice slowly becoming incompatible with the procedures and orders he'd have to follow under a Police Badge were excellent in exentuating his dis-satisfaction with the job and making the ending seem a logical conclusion, Alfred's desperation in trying to convince Bruce he had become too involved with the Batman persona to the point where he would never be happy in his life was a smart and hearbreaking look at the character and his constant source of misery and despite the whole saga of Bruce recovering in the prison (I do think they should have focused more on his physical battle as well as more shots of him being subjected to images of Gotham's decay) being a little iffy to believe as well as some of his antics involving the lighting of the Bat signal I thought as a sum of its parts this was probably the most complete in the series, in terms of story, acting and characters.

The Talia reveal was a nice surprise given I'd forgotten about her playing Talia, but it was clear it was a twist for the sake of a twist at the end. I mean logically speaking when Bane breaks Batman and takes control of Gotham there's little stopping Talia from revealing herself, rather than staying captive. I suppose you could argue it was a contingency plan should Batman return and be so focused on stopping Bane he'd be blind to suspect Talia's deception, but I do think as good as that explanation could be it was little more than a surprise twist for the sake of a surprise twist. Bane's death was well done to me, he went out like a badass having been given a death that no-one could survive, and one that caught him completely off guard rather than a swift and decisive killing by Batman. And it further explored the Catwoman/Batman dynamic with her not possessing Batman's moral stance on not killing

From a technical film standpoint I believe this may be the most ambitious film created. Without a doubt it’s definitely Nolan’s most technically ambitious movie.

Let me explain, the sheer scale of TDKR is unlike anything. Not just the streets of Chicago but entire city blocks shut down for the film. Every scene you see is 99% practical countless real vehicles driving through Chicago again not CGi.
The bat wing was practical !?! Using wires and only on the low street flying scenes but still since when do you see that anymore ?? The sheer amount of extras in the finale big fight scene is on a scale unlike no other. Having both the cops and the prisoners charge at one another was French kiss As from a story standpoint I think it wraps up the trilogy beautifully. Tying all the way back to the begging and perhaps what the entire trilogy is built on.
Rising from pain and injustice.

I’m Batman begins Bruce Wayne falls into the well and has to learn to rise out of it.
He then has to learn to rise above his fear and injustice and become the caped crusader.

In The Dark Knight, we see Bruce have his ideals tested to the max with the best of the best falling in Harvey Dent. And joker no matter what causing anarchy and turning good people bad.
Bruce has to learn to Rise above these individuals and keep true to his morals.

And hear in the dark Knight Rises we see a Bruce hit Rock bottom with bane breaking his body and his spirit, and taking Gotham and turning it into everything Bruce swore to stop.

And so Nolan Perfectly both narratively and visually tells the story of not only Bruce rising but also Gotham.
Bruce climbs the well letting go of his fear while simultaneously cutting to Gotham as they prepare and try to fight back.

At its core the Dark Knight trilogy is about being greater then what we suffer. And turning our pain into strength. We may never get another superhero trilogy as great as Nolan’s Batman. But perhaps Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is enough

The Dark Knight is a great movie with Ledger's performance being iconic but personally The Dark Knight Rises is all around a better movie. It is very well shot (as most of Nolan's movies are) and it's a really great storyline personally. A great cast to surround Bale with actors like Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon Levitt along with the usuals who were around from the last 2 films. The movie is full of iconic moments from me and a great way to end the trilogy one of the best payoffs that the character could get. The only criticism I have is the lack of development for certain characters and the reveals being mildly sudden and often unnecessary but otherwise a great movie all around and it gets a light 4 from me. Hell, the entire Dark Knight trilogy, the entire characterisation and existence of Batman, as a fictional character, is a direct testament to that message. Some absolutely intelligible media literacy when talking about this film Expand

Again the intro is strong & badass & really builds anticipation for what you’re about to watch. Tom Hardy as Bane was perfect & although it seemed impossible to follow The Joker, he did so & definitely is one of the strongest & best villains in any Batman movie. His first fight with Batman was just badass to watch. Michael Caine as Alfred is one of the most underrated performances from the series. Again this has amazing cinematography & plenty of exciting action. I also loved the story of seeing a hero fall then rise. The two fights themselves represent the two greatest fights in film. If I had to pick one, I’d lean towards the beautiful war in the snow in which the stakes are made clear and hope triumphs over despair. Don’t get me wrong however, the scene in which Bane breaks the Bat far surpasses any movie fight I’ve seen, but as I said I would I choose one. Their first encounter is drawn out and brutal as Bane inflicts as much pain and damage on Batman as he can before literally breaking him (physically and mentally). When Batman conquers over Bane in the end, Batman doesn’t have that time. It’s a battle of efficiency and realism. Batman has faced this monster of a man before, he’s gone through a journey since and it’s the result of this fight that decides the fate of Gotham. It’s the greatest fight in all of film Expand

First off, I think Tom Hardy as Bane was just as good as Heath Ledger’s Joker, the story was far better, and it was here that Christian Bale was cemented as the best Batman ever put on screen. The scale of the film was something of truly epic proportions as this film really felt like the end of a story. The stakes were raised to 11 here as well to the point that the film had you believe that Batman might actually perish in his own film. Anne Hathaway was great as Catwoman, even better than Michelle Pfeiffer from “Batman Returns” in my opinion, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ben Mendelsohn, and Marion Cotillard were all welcome additions to an already great cast. To be honest, this is my absolute favorite film of all time. It took my favorite character in any medium and showed what makes him so great in the first place. Expand

Preceded by the maniacal Joker portrayed by Heath Ledger, Bane is comparatively more somber but nonetheless terrifying. This was honestly the most satisfying end to a movie series i can remember. Its a shame we never get to see the sequel series it seemed to be setting up. Although i suppose its good that they didn’t risk ruining the extremely high note they ended it on.

The plot twists throughout the movie were amazing even when I knew they were coming, the small subtle hints throughout were amazing, and the last 10-20 minutes where they wrapped it all up and setup a possible sequel were just perfect.

I love Tom Hardy, and as usual he did a geeat job. Bane was such an interesting villian and the plot twist at the end made it even better. Anne Hathaway was fantastic as Catwoman. What a stroke of genius to have a villain the complete opposite of the Joker, a cold, calculating and hulking figure who is actually a match for Batman! This whole scene is exhilaratingly filmed. The gorgeous scenery and insane special effects make it all the more intense to watch. There’s also some fantastic music here as well which elevates everything. You also can’t help but admire the stunt work here and the way Nolan directs is just flawless as he gets right in on the action with no shaky cam or manic quick cuts! This just goes to show how powerful Bane is and how he always has the upper hand. I also absolutely love his voice. You’d expect him to have the voice of a bull frog, but instead it’s like Shaun Connery on acid. Tom Hardy did almost the impossible, and made us forget about Heath Ledger’s electrifying performance. Whilst Bane still doesn’t reach those heights, he’s still a bloody excellent villain in his own rights. Christopher Nolan himself announced the other day that this was his favourite scene from his entire career Expand

Simultaneously introducing us to Gotham's latest big bad, by the name of Bane (Tom Hardy), and setting in motion plans that would eventually lead to the film's climactic conclusion, the masked villain and his henchmen outsmart a bunch of CIA agents on an aircraft. This then leads to a stunning sequence involving the plane being literally pulled out of the air by a larger craft, before the merciless former League of Shadows member kidnaps nuclear physicist Dr. Leonid Pavel and leaves no survivors as the vehicle plummets to the ground.

Nolan knew he had to deliver the jaw-dropping goods in the opening stages of this insanely anticipated follow-up, and, unlike the folks in the aforementioned falling plane, he undoubtedly stuck the landing

Amazingly this ended up proving quite prophetic with regards to its villainous plot to effectively drain the swamp of Gotham's financial elite. This is, if anything, a more brutish and muscular film compared to the previous two installments, and while subtlety is maybe a little absent, it's hard not to be impressed by the sheer bravado and scale of the whole film.

It builds and builds to a truly stunning conclusion, a nerve shedding apocalyptic battle for survival with the ultimate ticking time bomb scenario and one of the most spectacular chase sequences ever put to film. The entire cast is sensational; Hardy makes for a truly frightening Bane, while Bale finds genuine humanity in his final appearance as Bruce Wayne. Best of all is its epic portrayal of Gotham City, which is as magnificent as it has ever been captured on the silver screen

Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film had an unenviable duty: how do you follow up not only the most beloved comic book film of all time, but one that can’t include that film’s breakout star due to tragic real world developments?

For the most part, The Dark Knight Rises was up to the task. Easily the largest scaled of Nolan’s Batman films, it features an aging, spiritually lost Batman who must overcome his mistakes to take on Bane, portrayed with staggering bombast by Tom Hardy.

The film also manages to break new ground, giving us the first real cinematic version of a happy ending for Bruce Wayne’s story. It’s a more than worthy finale to Nolan’s trilogy, ensuring it would be the standard by which all other superheroes are measured.

Bruce and Miranda both set out to continue their fathers legacies as well, it's just that those two legacies are diametrically opposed it seems. and so amongst the grand spectacle - all of which **** rules btw - there's a lot of very effective character and thematic work going on here. and that ending makes me tear up every time Expand

Redemption, rebirth, truth, and justice are among the themes and influences in TDKR, and Christian Bale kills it as an unretired Batman, combatting a formidable physical presence in Bane (Tom Hardy), who is immediately introduced in an ambitious opening scene. The final couple of scenes are a rollercoaster of emotions, as the epic trilogy gets a fitting and chill-inducing conclusion Expand

I’d unfortunately had her identity spoiled, so it did a bit of the sting out of Batman’s stabbing with the ‘slow blade’. But nevertheless her plot I felt was pretty well done. Finishing her father’s work and getting close to Bruce, who as Deadgeek pointed out was well known to the League of Shadows. I’d pretty much thought Bane was the man in charge the whole time, and that he was the child who escaped the Pit. Good swerve. The overall plot was pretty involved, it was a long film to be fair, but I didn’t find it too much. The way Bane’s operation escalated with the stock market raid and its forcing Bruce to reach out to Talia and put her in the position of power I felt was pretty original given the usual plot in superhero and comic type films. The human core of the film wasn’t overwhelmed by the different plot points Expand

That whole sequence being our introduction to Bane gets me super excited every time I watch this. His planning, his ruthlessness, and great quotability are shown right off the bat and all of it is just so cool.

There's so many other great new characters here as well in Miranda Tate, Selina Kyle, and Officer Blake. All well acted and scripted and serve a purpose in the overall storyline. I would also argue that the final 5 minutes or so of this movie are some of the greatest sequences in any series of films. One comparison I think of immediately is how much I enjoyed Avengers: Endgame, but the end of The Dark Knight Rises hits me more emotionally than that one did. Bane was a great villain and the motives were a little muddy for a bit, but by the end everything gets wrapped up so nicely and this ends up being a great finish to an incredible trilogy

I agree with this interpretation, and it's part of the reason why the Talia reveal strengthened both characters for me.
They're both so cruel, vengeful, and angry, and they have every right to be. As Bane says, the Pit is "the worst hell on Earth," and he and Talia were both born and raised there, knowing nothing but violence and cruelty until they found each other, and even that brief period of comparative happiness was doomed. Then, when they leave the Pit, they're brought into a world that doesn't try and heal their hearts or bring them peace, it merely gives their anger purpose and direction under the veneer of right and good.
What chance did they ever have to be anything other than what we saw: two people bonded by a horrific past and walking a path of certain death because destroying Gotham and themselves is the only way they can finally release all of the hate that's been boiling inside them for their entire lives

Bane's voice design is famous, the editing synergizes plotlines, and the cinematography uses thematic colors. The effects are primarily real (including an impressive airplane sequence). Plus, the music remains powerful and the production balances realism. Moreover, the direction ignites Batman's fight with Bane. Applying only minimal music, fundamental camerawork, and measured editing, that scene is quietly striking because it's an emotional culmination. Its technical restraint lets the action radiate, heightening its impact. Ultimately, TDKR is a prime example of calculated entertainment. Epic yet mindful, TDKR creates a purposeful journey.

While I understand I am in the minority in viewing Dark Knight as the weakest in the series, I suspect more fans who haven't revisited the series in a long time might feel more inclined to agree.

Nolan's direction is infinitely better in terms of action and pacing, providing several thrilling moments that you can not only see, but FEEL. He creates a fantastic story in which we get to feel some of "Begins" fun elements in terms of Batman coming back after a long hiatus. While I am not the biggest fan of the retirement angle, and feel the film could have easily skipped over this element without much of a change in characterization or plot, I can respect his reasoning for doing so as many have wanted to adapt the comic book it was based upon.

Bane is a fantastic villain and bringing back the League of Shadows from Begins was a fantastic way to conclude the overall story that is spread across all three films. Introducing Catwoman is also a welcomed storyline as Hathaway does a fantastic job. Nothing feels "tacked on" in this movie, every scene is well thought out and works in harmony with the overall story. Even though this film is longer than Dark Knight, it feels shorter due to the pacing. Its an exhilarating experience and it actually made me respect this series much more than I did when it came out

The final installment follows the revolutionary Bane as he forces Bruce Wayne to once again resume his role as Batman and protect Gotham City from nuclear destruction. To portray the physically imposing character, Hardy gained 30 pounds of muscle mass and wanted to create a contradiction between his voice and body.

For Bane’s distinct voice that is muffled by his mask, the actor revealed he was inspired by a renowned classic Hollywood star, explaining: “Bane is somebody who’s in tremendous pain all the time. So he had an older voice. Which is sort of Richard Burton, I suppose, you know. Slightly florid, camp English villain […] in many ways, but just off-center.” The Dark Knight Rises is widely considered to be one of the greatest superhero films of all time and was crowned by Forbes as the best modern comic book superhero adaptation on screen

What is expected of Christopher Nolan is a visually daringProbably my personal favorite of Nolan Batman movies, and I also really like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. This is a brilliant film, one of the highlights of superhero movies. What is expected of Christopher Nolan is a visually daring film, with beautiful cinematography, beautifully realized Gotham City and great special effects.

Hans Zimmer's shot is not one of his best for me, but there is still an epic and captivating quality that is simply perfect for this film. Dialogue provokes thinking and creates emotional impact, and the vast majority of the time The Dark Knight Rises is ambitious and captivating. There are so many great things that it’s easy to get lost in a movie and get caught up in the various situations that happen in a movie.

I consider Christopher Nolan to be one of my favorites, it speaks to an extremely impressive director who shows great ambition and a willingness to make his themes interesting. He’s doing a really wonderful job here, as the set / action, including the hijacking and Bane’s attack on Gotham, is enough to delight you. The way Nolan builds this dark atmosphere and the city is just something that many other directors should study in the future.

The performances are simply great of all involved, Matthew Modine is the weakest, but he is far from bad. Christian Bale is still a charismatic presence. Another great advantage is that Bale can bring that dark and mysterious nature into the character of Wayne, while at the same time being very convincing in the role of Batman. I think it's fair to say that he put his stamp on the character and if this is his last attempt, then he has done more than any previous actor. Matthew Caine appropriately loyal, and Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman subtly underestimated. Joseph Gordon Levitt beautifully captures the idealism of his character. Tom Hardy is in heightened intimidating fashion as Bane, a worthy successor to the legendary Joker Heath Ledger. Anne Hathaway was a curious choice, but as Catwoman she is in place, here is Catwoman who actually does a lot more than acting the sexy way (which she still is), here she is very ruthless and no nonsense.

The great virtue of Christopher Nolan remains to suggest the only realistic version of Batman. The only difference is because it is authentic. This film is precise in its story, because it is not just about a hero or a city, but about the past, the power of memory, the subtle cruelty of revenge, the right ending for a magnificent series and the right gestures to build a new beginning. A meeting of a great cast and the best screenplay. There is also an argument for defining “The Dark Knight Rises” as a masterpiece for many reasons, not just artistic, but, first, because you feel the story within you. Many scenes are known from books or other movies, from stories or paintings, from nightmares or everyday reality. And Nolan's genius is not in discovering them, but in using them in the best way. Impeccable film, this is the word that most easily defines this masterpiece. Truly a magnificent ending to one of the best trilogies in film history!

Nolan's third and final installment of this series is one of the most hard hitting, emotional thrill rides I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. The final resolution is executed in the most beautifully cinematic way possible. I don't have any criticism of this film at all, it's such a carefully crafted film that if I had to list something negative, I would have to nitpick, and in this 2 hour and 40 minute classic, that simply would be an exercise in futility. The film gets so much right with it's themes and characters, that it hits every note perfectly just like it's two predecessors do Expand

From the moment the Gotham Police Officers unify to confront Bane and his army of mercenaries and the Batman arrives in ‘The Bat’ firing the first shots; all the threads begin to tie together. The perfect blend of story, character, music, and visuals. The score kicks into gear as the battle begins. Catwoman blows open the entrance so people can start to evacuate. John Blake gets the word out to load up on the buses. “Is he back?” asks one of the kids as the score swells. A massive ground battle ensues and finally Batman and Bane see one another across the battlefield. All of it is so perfectly staged.

The sequence just continues to build with so many great moments. The Talia Al Ghul reveal. Catwoman and Batman chasing down the bomb. Batman’s sacrifice to save the city. Alfred’s emotional breakdown at Bruce’s grave. And those final moments… when Gordon sees the Bat signal. Alfred sees that Bruce is still alive. John ‘Robin’ Blake finds the bat cave, and in the final shot walks onto the ascending platform as we see the final title credit:

The Dark Knight Rises.

Pure perfection. Goosebumps every time. It’s the work of a master filmmaker. Christopher Nolan is a director capable of composing symphonic cinema, blending all the elements together into something amazing. Even though many of the story choices are naff, the final act strings them all together into something truly remarkable

The return, loss of hope, relief and sorrow, and the perfect ending scene. Looking back on the film there are not many things that I find I would change. Everything about this movie was so perfect to me and it is probably one of the best endings to a flick that I have ever seen. Whenever Alfred and Bruce smile at each other you can’t help but smile yourself. Everything about this movie was beautiful.
I do find it a little bit hard to believe that Bruce forgave catwoman pretty much instantly. But I love the chemistry the two characters had together, the constant back-and-forth and then finally being together really made me happy. I love the reveal that Talia is actually Ra’s daughter, and Bane was her protector. I was so confused whenever I saw Joey King playing a young Bane and then whenever the reveal happened I was mind blown. I am honestly a little fuzzy on why Bane was so persistent in carrying out the purpose of the league of shadows after he was castaway by Ra’s.
Bane is definitely the most intimidating villain in this trilogy. His raw strength and intimidation is unmatched by anybody else in the trilogy. He is smart, and he is scary. What more could you ask for.
Anne Hathaway gave a great performance as cat woman and I honestly have a newfound respect for her as an actress. She played the role perfectly and I loved every minute of her screen time.
I genuinely cannot get over the ending scenes of the movie. The statue dedicated to Batman, Gordon on the roof, Fox learning about the auto pilot, and Alfred crying for forgiveness to Bruce’s parents grave stones is honestly such a tearjerking moment but it was so beautiful to watch. I can’t get over it. Joseph Gordon Levitt was unbelievable in this movie. I loved how his character was persistent regardless of the task he was performing, and he was truly passionate for Gotham and the people of Gotham. His final scene in the Batcave was amazing, and the reveal that he is Robin is so perfect given the history of the character he played and his loyalty to Batman no matter what. I feel like Talia al Ghul was casted perfectly, I never had trust for her throughout the entire film and the twist was a surprise to me but I knew there was something up with the character. The role was played perfectly though.
Christian Bale‘s performance was very intriguing to me. I loved to see how Bruce Wayne was able to conquer the not only the physical pain but the mental block that was holding him back. I loved him as Batman once again, I feel like throughout the trilogy I was able to respect Christian Bales performance as Batman more and more. It definitely grew on me. I still think that Bruce Wayne could not have been more perfectly portrayed. I loved how it was done.
I’m going to be thinking about this for a very long time and that final scene is going to stick with me. I want to rewatch this trilogy someday, and I know that it will hold up. I thought a very nice touch to the final scene was whenever Alfred was getting his wallet to pay for the drink and then sees Bruce across the restaurant, he then put his credit card back in his wallet because he knows his Bill was already paid for. Bruce Wayne. Perfection.

Following The Dark Knight is like playing after the Beatles. Any attempt to outshine that masterpiece is just as useless as trying to ice skate uphill. Most of the criticism from fans and critics is either unwarranted or should be classified as misplaced aggression, as it’s a stunning achievement for several reasons. It almost feels like they were just bitter that it had to come to a close. The satisfying end to the gritty Bruce Wayne saga helped re-shape the landscape of the genre and will always be regarded as the thrilling conclusion to one of the best trilogies ever made.

Bale caps off a career-defining run as the caped crusader and offers up the most compelling and consistently good three-picture arc of any superhero adaptation ever attempted. The real standouts though, are the tragically underrated take on Bane from Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway, who crushes every second she is on screen as the seductive cat burglar Selina Kyle. The beautifully crafted story of the hero fallen from grace rising one more time to sacrifice everything for the people of Gotham is absolutely fantastic. It’s the kind of film where every time the brilliant score plays and Alfred gives that final nod to master Wayne. True fans will stand and applaud the unbelievably extraordinary cinematic accomplishment that is Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy. Good luck to anyone trying to surpass it.

Though many critics and fans praised her performance, She serves as another counter-image to Bruce Wayne; a billionaire philanthropist who (apparently) wanted to help Gotham out through funding the fusion reactor, was a billionaire, orphan and ninja. She served as an ally and a false hope to Bruce as he was trying to escape his demons and rebuild his life. She played an important role in manipulating Bruce Wayne and Wayne Enterprises for the takeover of Gotham to happen (the former knew her as Tate before the start of the film, and had no reason to distrust her). One way of which involved even being in resistance movements to allow for them to be caught by Bane's men, the special forces agents being killed, and capture of Gordon and his allies.
Her backstory with Bane and her father leaves an emotional impact, adding to the former’s humanity; also drawing influence from Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities- Bane is Monsieur Defarge to Talia's Madame Defarge (the antagonists of that novel). She doesn't take away from Bane's character but adds to him, and they're equals contrary to disgruntled fans who claimed that it "demoted" him. She has some terrific moments like her “The slow knife that cuts deepest” speech to Batman, and her cold look that she gives as she tells her henchman to “Shoot them all” as they kill Deputy Foely

Even ign of all places scored it a 9/10. I remember they even did this “battle” between Dark Knight Rises and Avengers where they pitted cast, villains, plot, action etc against each other. Rises won every category except I believe 1.
It’s a fantastic film and not to mention it is also the “first of its kind.” The first to conclude a superhero film franchise on its own terms and go in with the notion of it being the end. Also the first time we see Batman get the happy ending he deserves (it won’t happen in comics, why? Because comics never end, he stays 35-42 forever or they’ll always present hypothetical alternate futures).
It is also the first medium to present a definitive ending for Batman.
Not to mention globally it outgrossed The Dark Knight. Why? The movie had legs…people flocked to see it and many more went back for multiple viewings…indicators that they enjoyed it

At the end of the preceding chapter, we saw how the peace that was established in Gotham was based on a lie, the lie of Harvey Dent. In the introduction of the film, after an enthralling plane heist scene, it shows in great depth that the actions of the Joker have had a deep and lasting impact on the people of Gotham as the people are still dealing with the aftermath of the destruction that was unleashed on the people of Gotham. While they are still on the recovery path, the fearless Bane, played by Tom Hardy, arrives in the city to carry out what the Joker did not, destroy Gotham. One of the main people that the Joker really left his mark on is Batman himself as we see how much he has just completely withdrawn into his shell in the years since. He lost a lot of physical strength in the eight years in between the two films and it sets the scene perfectly for the arrival of Bane as he is in his prime physical condition.

As with previous two chapters of this trilogy, the story of this film is really engrossing. Initially the citizens of Gotham are living on this false sense that peace had been achieved and that all the crime and corruption in Gotham had been eradicated with the Joker’s capture. Yet, Bane takes his chance with both hands to blow this façade apart and he does this ruthlessly and takes out anyone who dares to stand in his way. Hardy is magnificent in this role and in my opinion is the best villain of the trilogy. He has the intellect of the Joker, but a considerable physical advantage that made him a formidable opponent to Batman. His voice, although hard to understand at times, is another factor that makes him a frightening force to be reckoned with. As the majority of his face is covered by his mask, he has to use his eyes to convey his emotion and he does this brilliantly. The film’s action goes up another gear from the previous film as Bane threatens to torture the citizens of Gotham and completely tear the city apart, and it is up to a weakened Batman to come to Gotham’s rescue once more. This film boasts the best action scenes of the entire trilogy.

All of the returning cast again shine in their roles. Special mention must go to Michael Caine who arguably delivers his best performance of the trilogy. The new members of the cast also deliver great performances. Anne Hathaway and Marion Cotillard both deliver wonderful female performances as Selina Kyle (AKA Catwoman) and Miranda Tate respectively. Hathaway was seductive and brilliantly cunning at the same time, and she excelled as Catwoman. Similarly, Cotillard was equally strong in her leading role as the very intelligent businesswoman Miranda Tate. Joseph Gordon-Levitt also gives a strong performance as the smart and determined policeman John Blake.

The Dark Knight Rises was the film we deserved and the one that we needed to wrap up this magnificent trilogy. Every member of the cast, as with the first two films, played their roles out to absolute perfection. The action scenes are again pulsating to watch and with superb acting by everyone involved, along with the perfect villain, The Dark Knight Rises was one of the best films of 2012 and is the best film of Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy in my opinion. In a year that produced some extraordinary films and performances, The Dark Knight Rises was a little unlucky not to pick up at least one Oscar nomination. However it remains one of 2012’s best films. I take my hat off to Christopher Nolan for giving us three individual masterpieces that combine to form one of the best film trilogies of the 21st century

The first movie used Year One, the second The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke, and the finale Knightfall and No Man's Land. All of these inspirations were done tastefully, but when compared to the first, Rises blends two arcs to create an incredibly daunting premise.

Bane's inclusion and initial destruction of Batman were expertly re-imagined through Knightfall, but adding to it the cutting off of Gotham from the world like in No Man's Land but leaving it run by terrorists led by Bane is a strong twist to that story

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Plot twists are always tough to handle. The great ones ("I am your father") add substance to the film, give the characters more depth and force the audience to reevaluate what they have just seen. If your film employs one of these twists, it's vital to keep it a secret because the shock enhances the experience of watching the movie for the first time. One trick Nolan used when writing The Dark Knight Rises was to give two characters, Robin and Talia al Ghul, aliases so fans didn't know their true intentions. It's a clever way to misdirect the people who follow the production of these movies very closely. The twists may seem obvious now, but I'm sure there were more than a few moviegoers who fell for the "John Blake" and "Miranda Tate" identities before they saw the film. I know I was caught off guard (if only a little bit) when the big reveals came. The way the team handled it was smart. When you think about it, there was absolutely no reason for anyone to mention Talia al Ghul during the pre-release phase of The Dark Knight Rises. The marketing materials highlighted Bane as the ultimate adversary and Selina Kyle's alliances were never made 100% clear. In some trailers, she was helping Batman. In others, she was threatening Bruce Wayne. The villain department was covered for trailers and TV spots. The decision to push "Miranda Tate" in the background proved to be extremely beneficial. People knew Marion Cotillard was in the film, but she was an afterthought by the time July 20 rolled around. Nolan had positioned her character as a potential love interest for Bruce as he looked to get his personal life back on track. Nobody thought much of her, but the twist changed everything. talia This is an instance where a secret definitely helped the film. Prior to the revelation, Miranda Tate was nothing more than a throwaway character who seemed superfluous to the plot. The twist elevated her character by giving her depth and purpose. It was a nice way to bring the trilogy full circle, up the emotional stakes (Talia is the daughter of Batman Begins villain Ra's al Ghul for those who don't know), and call back one of the many iconic lines of dialogue, "theatricality and deception are powerful agents." Bane - with his plane heists and football field demolitions - represented theatrics. Talia was deception. It's a great touch. In my opinion, the best way to handle the Talia situation was the way Nolan did in his film. Until that moment in the third act, there was never really a suitable time for Miranda to say, "I'm Talia." If it had happened at an earlier part in the film, it would have felt out of place. Nolan really had no choice but to keep the character a secret, and that move paid off. Also, it's not as if Talia al Ghul was expected to be a major part of The Dark Knight Rises in the first place. People were excited to see if Bane would break Batman's back or if Bruce would die at the end, not watch a showdown between the Dark Knight and Talia al Ghul. By underplaying this element of the movie, Nolan not only blindsided some audience members, but gave his trilogy another layer that ultimately made it better. If the director had told us Miranda was Talia before anyone saw the film, that moment wouldn't have been so impactful and the character probably wouldn't have been as interesting as she became after the reveal. We would have just been sitting there waiting for Bruce to find out instead of learning with him. It was smart. Expand

Christian Bale still did an amazing job portraying as Batman. Does bring back certain connections found from Batman Begins. The darker tone and gritty tone is amazing. Tom Hardy's portrayal as Bane is one of the best villain characters to date, despite looking nothing like the character in the comics. Hardy did make an amazing job portraying Bane, who is arguably the best villain in all of the DC films. Also, he is a friend and protector of Talia al Ghul and the field commander of the League of Shadows. He was potent in both strategy and physical combat. The scenery is still amazing. Ra's Al Ghul returns as a cameo in the movie. The soundtrack that was performed by Hans Zimmer is so epic and exciting as well. It still has a bunch of awesome fight scenes. The scene near the end of the movie where Batman uses his aerial craft, the Bat, to carry the bomb far over the bay and explodes is well handled. Well done acting from the actors, including Tom Hardy as the memorable incarnation of Bane and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Superb cinematography that was well shot, even the plane crash scene is a highlight. "Tell me where the trigger is! Then, you have my permission to die." Awesome pacing, despite the overlong. Expand
