This movie was my favorite film out of the Nolan trilogy. This wrapped everything he set up perfectly. This also shows the mastermind that Christopher Nolan is. I loved bane as a villain his motive was great. Also that plot twist was very surprising and the ending also had me shocked. I give this film a 9/10 definitely recommend it and the whole trilogy. Christopher Nolan is a great director and Christian bale is a great batman. I probably give the trilogy a 8.5/10 definitely recommend watching it… Expand

The casting is still great. The gravitas of Oldman Caine and Freeman just add so much weight and levity to characters which could not have been anything special. Tom Hardy is excellent as Bane and I love the way they shoot scenes to makeThe casting is still great. Tom Hardy is excellent as Bane and I love the way they shoot scenes to make Hardy seem larger then he actually is. He is almost the representation of pure evil and is the definition of intimidating. His famous 'I will break you' line from Batman Knightfall in 1993 has lived on to one of my favourite comic series and I love the soft adaptation that it gets. Selina Kyle contributed to some of my development in this movie in the same way that Carrie Fisher as slave Leia contributed too many children's development. Marion Cotillard is good as Tate but probably the weakest actor as she gets really cheesy towards the end. It's ironic as she is one of the better actors as a whole but doesn't always bring it for this movie. The most underrated performance though comes at the hand of the main actor and Bale knocks it out of the park again. Probably his best performance in any of these movies.

The action is easily the best in any of the Dark Knight trilogy. Its funny ironically however as it means that Catwoman has some of the best action. The jewel in the crown though is Batman vs Bane in the sewers which is so cool. Speaking of which this is one of those extremely quotable movies due to Bane. My favourite is easily 'oh you think darkness is your ally, but you merely adopted the dark. I was born in it Moulded by it, I didn't see the light until I was a man, by then it was nothing to me but blinding'. This all combines to make one of my favourite scenes when Batman escapes the pit and as a detail I love the bats coming out just before he jumps.

Very rich plot. Its my favourite type of plot as if you are barely focusing on it you still get everything that happens but if you really focus you pick up every minute detail and I love those sorts of plots so much. The cameos also really surprise me as I didn't expect Scarecrow to rock up the first time I watched it. It's also miraculously well directed. Nolans over the city shots alongside his practical work, work wonders to create a realistic but also extravagant movie. His cinematography is also fantastic. It also continues the trend in his films to sometimes not have a concrete ending and in my opinion that works better.

The dark moral of a corrupt political climate that The Dark Knight Rises shows through Gotham’s grief is really excellent when the perspective is put on the issue. With Bane’s ever lasting commitment to pulling off pain in the city, and Miranda’s morality with her revenge it sets off a never ending stream for the tone of the film to follow along. Then Bruce wanting to be his own nation “per say” and do it without the willingness of others around him. Focusing on the complexities of the film is what I loved during this rewatch. Half of the dark blend of Nolan’s direction and the surrounding technicals are what send this film off another level. With each of his films he keeps that dark tone and hits a nerve on the edge of your seat with every picture he makes. With each shot he focuses his time on making it make sense and capturing the message and/or symbolism of the scene. I don’t really talk about it that much because it never turned to conversation but honestly the greatest scene in this film is the Star Spangled Banner Scene. The symbolism of that is so impressive. Your honestly watching one of the most messed up scenes in the history of Cinema. By using that song in the angelic voice of that young child symboled the freedom Gotham felt, but we as an audience no good and well it’s not. And the feel of the scene is so damn intense. I always notice that it’s only the kid singing, noticing that nothing else is happening except the anthem of freedom being used as the last thing to be heard before that feeling of freedom is stripped away entirely. Bane then going on to say “that’s a lovely, lovely voice” knowing good and well he’s about to kill that symbol of freedom singing the anthem of freedom. After that scene the third act takes off and the film gets nothing but brilliant. The technical blend as well deals with the more explosive side of visual effects. They go so well with the film it’s hard to take your eyes off. The character of Bane has to be the best part about this film. Not only is he so **** misused in other DC properties and gets his rightful spotlight, but Tom Hardy’s ability to make such an evil character and use that flow of darkness that Bane is so viscously proves that Christopher Nolan can be a director to take risk, and that arc of doing all of this for Miranda was pretty much a great twist. And I’d just say I recognize the hate that Miranda gets for her twist of being the head mastermind and not Bane, but I honestly think that the writers so greatly used their minds to convincingly show why she was the one behind it. Overall, The Dark Knight Rises should go in the all time books, and be shown as a way to tell a unique perspective on political corruption.… Expand

I have always had a soft spot for this movie simply because we get to see a damaged, older Bruce Wayne. Growing up on Batman Beyond, with a very old Bruce, it was"Once you've done what you had to, they'll never let you do what you want to."
I have always had a soft spot for this movie simply because we get to see a damaged, older Bruce Wayne. Growing up on Batman Beyond, with a very old Bruce, it was just so cool seeing a non-suave, beaten down version of the character. We get to see that The Batman is a fallible character, he can be hurt, destroyed, and broken. Nolan really touches some political topics in this, about wealth and those in power and revolution. He doesn't make any grand statements on this but including this in one of the biggest blockbuster movies was awesome. Hardy, Hathaway, and Cotillard all come out swinging in this, having to bear a whole lot of the weight of the movie. Hathaway is just a perfect Catwoman and we get an incredible depth to the character in this, more than I've ever seen in previous iterations. They just balanced the romantic side of her and Bruce so well, letting us see it and know it's there, but making it in the background. It still just in a stab in the heart when she betrays him, and makes it mean so much more when she tries to stop him from going back into Gotham to save the city one last time. Hardy pulls off one of the more difficult performances, as he has to show so much with his face being covered the entire time.
They are both just able to pull off the physicality of the roles so well, while also just having so much depth. And of course Caine is beyond spectacular and delivers the "I won't bury any more members of the Wayne family" line that just summarizes the depth of their relationship so well. Using JGL as a vehicle for showing what Batman means to kids, and to show the struggle of being part of the police and how the help and hurt the pursuit of justice. This really does feel like a grand epic, a fall and rise of a character, justice, and a city. There's so much happening in this movie, so much it's trying to do and say, and it is just able to nail everything. I don't think I appreciated before, the symbolism of the pit and the well that Bruce falls in Batman Begins, but it hit me this time and it just really tied it all together. It's just beautiful as you would always expect from Nolan and Alfred/Bruce's ending look at each other will always make me tear up. And when JGL goes up into the batcave I always always get chills.… Expand

The Dark Knight Rises is the third and concluding chapter to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, and is what I consider to be, a grand fitting end to the Christian Bale Batman/Bruce Wayne story arc. Released in 2012 to tremendous box office and critical reception, The Dark Knight Rises managed to become the highest grossing Batman film of all time, surpassing the hefty financial gain of The Dark Knight (2008), and still bares that title to this day. The Dark Knight Rises also has a few criticisms drawn from fans and critics alike, despite its mainly universal appraisal. Luckily for me, I'm not one of these hateful naysayers that hold any vice against this film.
Drawing inspiration from various Batman comics storylines, such as "Knightfall," "No Man's Land," and "The Dark Knight Returns," The Dark Knight Rises manages to convey an engaging and effectively entertaining plot that's jampacked with numerous allusions, homages, colossal themes, and most importantly, a gratifying and emotionally powerful conclusion. Christopher Nolan really outdid himself with this production. Not only do we get a phenomenal plot, but we get phenomenal choreographed action sequences and intense visuals. The special effects alone are a treat to the eyes!!
Christian Bale is remarkable in his final performance as Bruce Wayne, bringing us a battle-hardened, broken hero who must rise past his broken spirit (and broken physical limitations thanks to Bane and previous fights) in order to save Gotham City from total nuclear destruction. Familiar faces aiding him such as characters portrayed by Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman bring their A-game in their final roles also. Newcomer Joseph Gordon Levitt does great as cop John Blake. And Marion Cotillard delivers an alluring, mystifying dual-identity role as Miranda Tate/Talia Al Ghul.
But it's fellow newcomers Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway that really stand out. The Bane we get in this movie is a lot different than the remedial one we get in Batman And Robin (1997); this new one portrayed greatly by Tom Hardy feels almost ripped straight from the comic books: an intelligent mountain of a man, who poses as both a physical and intellectual threat to Batman. Behind Heath Ledgers groundbreaking performance of The Joker, he's my favorite Batman villain in Nolan's trilogy.
Anne Hathaway portrays Selina Kyle/Catwoman, a professional cat burglar, grifter, and femme fatale who develops a relationship with Bruce Wayne/Batman. She manages to evoke the sense of who Catwoman really is, and does such a great performance, she rivals Michelle Pfeifer's take on the character in Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992). Lest we forget the intricate and meticulously well-shot 70mm IMAX cinematography? Or Han Zimmer's delightfully haunting musical score? Or every sliver of a detail perfectly synchronised to make connection and reference to the entire trilogy as a whole? No, lest us not forget.
I still choose The Dark Knight as my favorite of Nolan's brilliant Dark Knight Trilogy, as well as my favorite comic book adapted film of all time; but The Dark Knight Rises will blow you away regardless.… Expand

Watching this film for the first time in theaters, with no knowledge of filmmaking, not even a movie fan at that time, just a normal audience going in the theatres for a ride, I remember coming out completely satisfied and floored. This film still crowns the most pristine look for an action film. The cinematography, the snow falling in the city of Gotham, everything about the visuals of this film is just screaming awesomeness, and for the longest time I hold this film as the pinnacle of the best looking action film and I still do.

In many ways, the minor flaws in here is so insignificant compare to the memorable bits of the film. This rendition of cat woman is by far the best one ever. Anne Hathaway achieves the perfect balance of sexiness and the feminine wit in this character, the visual design is also perfect. Bane is such an underrated villain, Tom Hardy adds so much on the character’s simple motivation, the menace through his voice and his physicality rivals Batman and his energy brought so much to the tension we felt in the film. The opening and ending scene is one of the best in movie cinema.

One of my favourite aspects of this film is how Nolan coins the genre of the superhero saga into a prison break movie. The design of the pit is visually so mesmerizing, every time the camera points up to the light and we see the cave of the prison, the picture just becomes this visceral canvas of beauty in horror. The moment when Bruce Wayne confronts his true fear by foregoing the only security from the rope, it’s honestly so badass that it trumps every other character moment in any Marvel movies and DC movies for that matter.

After so many years, there’s still not one DCEU movie that achieves this style of epic grounded action thriller where Nolan single-handedly master in Hollywood. It’s only until 2016 where Denis Villeneuve finally managed to make something that comes close to that level of authentic grandness.

The Dark Knight Rises also has the best score in the trilogy in my opinion, the best score for any hero movies, the perfect balance of grandness, epicness, the unsung melancholy and the haunting beauty of romantic sacrifice.

While it may not have consistently great dialogue, it still have great characters and Nolan should hold this close to him for his next film… Expand

The Dark Knight Rises sees Christian Bale’s Batman up against Tom Hardy’s Bane, a revolutionist who wants to liberate the world of pain. He needs to join forces with Catwoman, a.k.a. Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), and find other allies to take down this menacing foe.

We love this film for its pacing, performances, and the anxiety that comes from watching such a dramatic showdown. Its development went through a lot, especially after the passing of Heath Ledger, forcing rewrites and hesitation on going forward with the film at all. We’ll always be excited for more Batman, but if this had been the last instance of the caped crusader on screen, we could rest easy.… Expand

Probably talking about TDKR. It doesn’t have a conservative message like some people think, nor does it have a liberal message. For one the movie shows that it’s not about keeping poor people in there place. Joseph Gordon-Levitts character is proof of that as he talks about the inspiration that Batman gives to the orphans. Batman isn’t fighting with the cops because all cops are good, he’s fighting with them because he needs backup to protect against Banes radical team. All three Dark Knight movies show corrupt cops so it’s not a pro cop movie and it’s not an anti cop movie either. Because it also shows heroic cops. Batman says in Begins that he became a criminal for a short time to better understand them. That’s why he doesn’t kill. The people Bane is working with are criminals not just regular people. This whole thing was very ramble but I’m tired of people saying it’s a conservative movie.… Expand

It's probably not chiefly about OWS, but it's pretty clearly a commentary on the idea of occupation, be it recent examples like Iraq or OWS or past instances throughout history. I do think it's a distinct shot at populism in general, which makes sense because Nolan is clearly a director who is obsessed with the WHAT and HOW, but is less able to actually emote and think about the WHY. We can probably tease that out and figure out his politics pretty easily.
Ultimately, I read TDKR as a defense of liberal democracy, and that it strains to strip that defense of left or right ideology. You can criticize that all you want rightfully so, as the sheer idea of democracy without ideology is centrist liberal/libertarian **** but it is definitely not a whole sale condemnation of OWS. In fact, if it came out now exactly the same, people would apply anyone from Trump to Bernie to Bane's character… Expand

Starring some of the best of Nolan’s favourite actors, the film achieved the impossible and tied up as many loose ends as it could in a satisfying and fulfilling way, whilst also having us beg for more. Eight years later, fans remain desperate to know what became of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake, who revealed his real name to be ‘Robin’ after inheriting the Batcave in Bruce Wayne’s last will and testament.

Is he Robin? Is he Nightwing? Is he Batman the Second? Is he … still a cop who uses Batman’s technology to find bad guys quicker to fast-track himself to Chief of Police?

Seeing as Nolan has said the franchise is over, we’ll probably never know.

The Dark Knight Rises: 9.5/10 Goated, absolutely **** goated. This is going to be like a combo of my review of the movie and just my general thoughts on the trilogy as a whole but in both regards it deserves nothing but the highest praise.The Dark Knight Rises: 9.5/10 Goated, absolutely **** goated. This is going to be like a combo of my review of the movie and just my general thoughts on the trilogy as a whole but in both regards it deserves nothing but the highest praise. Such a brilliant display of everything from audio-visual work to narrative structure and characterization this trilogy really does it all. The score was absolutely outstanding from beginning to end and in this movie I felt like the score did so much to amplify all of the scenes regardless of what was happening. The dialogue was amazing, iconic one liners and more subtle conversations that carry so much emotional weight it doesnt feel like a single line is wasted at any point which is extremely difficult to do. The cast is so well done, can we just talk about how this one trilogy has some of the best protagonists antagonists and side characters in all of fiction? Every character arc was explored and developed to its fullest from beginning to the end, characters that are introduced in one movie get the proper amount of development necessary to flesh out every aspect and ultimately creates some of the most iconic performances in all of media. This movie had that in spades, in particular it had a lot of really good development for Commissioner Gordon who was already one of my favorite characters in the trilogy but this cemented it for me. My favorite character in this movie in particular was Catwoman for sure, she served as a super interesting counterbalance for Batman acting as sort of a more self-serving out for herself version of him and god damn was it fun to watch. Amazing performance Anne Hathaway absolutely killed it, its honestly kinda nuts how well she fit the role imo. Bane was another really interesting character, had some great dialogue, and his characterization was really well done. I think one of the main themes of this trilogy is the idea of chaos and how it brings out the worst in people, and Bane is a fantastic device used to explore this idea. I think The Joker was the better device through which this was explored but like I think thats being a little bit unfair so its whatever, both are fantastic in their own rights. Also this ending might be one of the best most conclusive most satisfying endings to anything that I have ever watched or read, everything fit perfectly into place, I just wanted to see my boy Bruce happy and thats exactly what we got, the ending had me straight up crying it was so good. I came to become so invested in these characters over the course of these movies and it feels so good to see this trilogy end in such a beautiful way. This trilogy is absolutely goated in every way, shape and form, Christopher Nolan is a genius.,I'm not even mad that we didn’t get any more it’s absolutely perfect. Truly one of the best universes in all of media, I honestly don’t even know what else to say other than the fact that its brilliant… Expand

i just rewatched this film for the first time in a few years and boy was it much better than i remembered.
this film offers a new look at gotham compared to the dark, gritty criminal underworld present in the first two films. we can see ai just rewatched this film for the first time in a few years and boy was it much better than i remembered.
this film offers a new look at gotham compared to the dark, gritty criminal underworld present in the first two films. we can see a gotham that has prospered in the last few years, moving out of the darkness both figuratively and literally. most of the scenes in this movie are set in broad daylight, which is a refreshing change from the last two entries.
tom hardy is excellent as Bane in this movie. he is the first villain in this series that truly feels like an unstoppable force. the moment where the whole plan comes together, the cops are trapped underground and bane declares anarchy on the football field was chilling and was the first time i felt as though there were real stakes from a villain.
i do find miranda tate being the true villain an excellent twist. she is Bruce’s reckoning, a cultivation of everything he has done and him quite literally facing his past dealings with the league of shadows and the consequences of his never ending work to protect gotham. i do wish they’d built up her relationship with bruce a bit more, though, as their romance did seem to come out of nowhere, but in the end it made the twist even more jaw dropping. this movie is long, and there is a LOT going on, but for the most part the pacing is pretty good. there were definitely parts that could’ve been cut out, this film suffers from agonisingly long and boring car chases like the dark knight does. other than that there isn’t much i would change about this movie.
anne hathaway is also spectacular in this movie and was very enjoyable to watch. i found myself enjoying every scene she was in and we get to see her grow from the selfish to the selfless across the movie. this movie also features great performances all round. out of the main ensemble i can’t say there are any weak performances.
my favourite scenes would have to be the ones of bruce in the pit. he is quite literally reborn there and the harrowing chants of the prisoners as someone attempts to climb is something that i always remembered from the first time i watched this movie.
this movie excels at being the end of the trilogy - batman’s final mission. with the highest stakes ever, and one of the most impressive villains i have ever seen in a superhero movie, it’s an enjoyment to watch from start to finish. And in the final scene where we see the plane fly off with the bomb and batman inside it we are quite literally seeing the death of batman. bruce may still be alive but he has hung up the cape, and the batman died along with the bomb leaving a beautiful well-wrapped ending to one of the best trilogies of all time.

i don’t see much point making more batman movies after these ones, they are hard to flaw are greatly celebrated even today. afflecks batman wasnt great, but he still feels like he stands in the shadow of Bale, which i also worry will happen to Pattinson once “The Batman” releases. after rewatching the remarkable ending to a franchise it has got me thinking about how future movies can compete, and in my opinions batman should be left to rest for now. the dark knight rises is the perfect fulfilling ending to batman and his story… Expand

Not only is this the most intelligent Nolan film, really getting you to work as you watch the villain's plan unfold before you and the heroes, but it is also the most powerful in storytelling and moving the audience.

Already you have the groundwork laid out from the previous film 'The Dark Knight' to follow up with Batman, running from the police who now has to tackle a new threat. It could not be done in a more mind-shattering and brilliant way.

Bane's character, while seemingly a bit generic, quickly makes you realize how much you've taken him for granted when learning more about his backstory. Every time he walks on the screen he has a presence. I would say the same for the Joker, but he's been unfortunately memed too much for me to take him 'so serious' anymore.

The way in which Bruce must rise again from the pit truly felt inspiring, and how he climbed out without the rope, the safety which he had always throughout the previous films. To me, that rope was symbolic of everyone he had with him throughout the films. Alfred, Rachel, and Dent as well. Now he had lost them all to the very same symbol which he crawls back to every night. He still finds the courage to put it on one last time.

This time especially, I felt extremely interested in all other subplots in the movie. Gone was the fun but slightly stale 2000s grain and the lower mm cameras. This really plays up the aesthetic which Gotham is, and also allows for Gotham City to feel breathed in, as though people are really walking through it. This is something I never truly feel in any other Batman series or adaptation.

To say this is the best Batman movie is an understatement. This really is the peak of Nolan's filmmaking for me. Everything from the acting, choreography, the score, and much more is such a step up from both predecessors. It never ceases to amaze me how much effort must have gone into this film.

I still love this so so so so much. I never appreciated the score or the cinematography but man they are both great. The scene when Bane and Batman fight and it switches from like 1.85 to IMAX is so good. And the lack of music makes it allI still love this so so so so much. Rises is an epic conclusion to the Dark Knight story, and wraps up everything it needed to perfectly one of the best damn comicbook movies I've ever witnessed. Nolan's trilogy will always be close to my heart, and still yet to be topped andRises is an epic conclusion to the Dark Knight story, and wraps up everything it needed to perfectly one of the best damn comicbook movies I've ever witnessed. Nolan's trilogy will always be close to my heart, and still yet to be topped and proberly never will be.

Following up after The Dark Knight is a near impossible task, and could easily have been a disaster. But not on Nolan's watch, he gives us a final chapter which is darker, innovetive, thrilling, compelling, emotional, full of twists, bigger in scale, builds on previous events and that delivered beyond my expectations.

The story is more focused on Bruce then Batman which may have disappointed some fans, but not me. The script masterfully completes the arc of Bruce Wayne and does a solid justice to Bob Kane's creation. The writing is sharp, poetic and delicious. While Nolan introduces new techniques to his direction style, that enhances the storytelling experience to make it more engaging and immersive. The action is awesome, in particular the hand to hand fights between Batman and Bane. Zimmer's score is better then ever with melodies on an epic scope, and Pfister's stunning imagery completes the final ingrediant to an incredible movie.

Performances are outstanding. Bale is the best he's ever been, Caine brings that powerful emotional weight and rest of the returning cast play their parts beautifully. Hathaway is a great Catwoman, and Hardy delivers a terrifying villain of intimidating brawn and high level interlect who I believe over more time will be appreciated more. He is the ultimate foe for Bruce and the perfect final challenge.… Expand

The Dark Knight Rises is hands down the greatest conclusion to any trilogy. I loved pretty much everything about this movie. I also think it is the best movie in the franchise, even better than The Dark Knight albeit just by a narrow margin.The Dark Knight Rises is hands down the greatest conclusion to any trilogy. I loved pretty much everything about this movie. I also think it is the best movie in the franchise, even better than The Dark Knight albeit just by a narrow margin. The action sequences are incredible, the characters are very well fleshed out and Bane is one of the greatest villains of all time, while I don't think he's quite as good as The Joker but he's certainly an iconic villain.

What I really love about this film is that it focuses on Bruce and his psychological obsession with Batman far more than the previous film did. He is a broken man in this one, he had to hang up his cape and cowl after taking the fall for Harvey Dent's crimes in the previous film yet he can't move on from the pain of his parents death and his obsession of being Batman. He has spent the past 4 years waiting for things to go bad in Gotham so he has a reason to become Batman once more and die protecting Gotham. Bruce's character arc in this film is pretty much flawless, Christopher Nolan somehow took a very fantasy element of the comics being the Lazarus Pit and adapted it to fit in the real world. In order for Bruce to rise from the pit he must regain his fear of death, he must care about his own life once again and in a way once he rises from it he has been reborn a new man, one who cares about his life and will fight not only for Gotham, not only for the people but for himself.

Do not listen to the haters, there is a very small yet vocal minority of haters who can't stand it that this film made over a billion dollars yet didn't need the Joker, as a result they made up a bunch of nit picky complaints such as Bruce quit being Batman because of Rachel (he didn't, Rachel was the reason he couldn't let go of his obsession), that there weren't enough Batsuit scenes, some people are even stupid enough to think the bomb would have caused a tsunami yet anyone with a basic understanding of plate tectonics knows that isn't possible.

Overall this movie is an absolute masterpiece and it is a very fulfilling conclusion to the greatest trilogy ever.… Expand

theres a scene in the beginning of this film where alfred as a conversation with bruce about how he goes to florence once a year for vacation and he always wishes that one day he would see bruce there with a woman. they wouldnt say anything, but alfred would know that bruce made it in. alfred never wanted to see bruce back in gotham when he first left. he wanted to see bruce happy.

thats one of my favorite scenes ever, and after this rewatch, this is one of my favorite MOVIES ever. i think it has the best technical film making out of any of these 3 movies. it has my favorite character out of them all in bane, my favorite movie quote EVER (above), a lot of my favorite scenes in movies ever (opening plane scene, football scene, bane vs batman in the cave, bane vs batman in gotham and that whole captial building showdown, getting rid of the bomb scene, the ending, which is A LOT of scenes i know), and some of the best choreographed and shot action that ive seen in a comic book film. the action scenes in this movie are always high intensity and badass.

bane is so scary, its because you can feel how much power he has. he is such a skilled fighter and mercenary.. the dominance him and his malitia have is so threatening. everything he does is threatening. banes one liners are great too!! he is the perfect villain, strong, powerful in society/crime, very smart and methodical, and is actually a very high threat to the protagonist(s). bruce waynes return gets me so hyped up, you have no clue. i kinda like that he feels a little more vulnerable in this film than in the dark knight where he was an unstoppable force. bane is clearly more skilled and stronger than batman, which is good. i love that so much. joseph gordon-levitt is a great addition to the film, so happy with his character in the film. seeing morgan freeman, michael caine, and gary oldman return was so delightful. anne hathaway is one of the most attractive women on the whole planet, id let her hit me with a truck. like bro please break my wrists..

the ending of this film is amazing. jgl is teased to carry batmans legacy, and im glad he doesnt and that it ends there. gotham is saved. gordon and lucius go out with a good realization moment, and with time winding down in the film, it comes full circle. alfreds dreams come true. he goes on vacation to venice, and sees bruce wayne sitting across from him with a woman. they make eye contact, dont say a word. bruce made it. never wants to see bruce in gotham again… Expand

Incredible film. The build up and suspense of everything, especially to see how it played out in the third act was brilliant all around. Now I’m gonna go into some random thoughts. I loved seeing the prison and how Nolan paralleled that with the well and bats in Batman Begins. Selina Kyle, badass. Also, bad af. With Alfred, the foreshadowing and him seeing Bruce with a wife, paying off in the end, was awesome. John Blake’s real name being revealed as Robin, blew my mind. It was also cool to see him sort of take over the bat cave in the end. When Bruce died, I was tearing up. What actually crushed me though was seeing Alfred crying in front of all three Wayne’s graves. But then, we learned the autopilot on the Bat was actually fixed, by BRUCE. I was definitely smiling hard there. Alfred seeing Selina and Bruce in the end brought another tear or two to my eye. Right before the credits, Alfred got to see everything he ever wanted for Bruce. Very rewarding film, and my favorite of the trilogy if I'm being totally honest… Expand

Where to begin. It starts out with an absolute bang. Another movie to the trilogy, another extremely badass, villain of the century introduced. Bane is intimidating, ruthless, badass, a myth; everything a great villain should be: pure evil.Where to begin. It starts out with an absolute bang. Another movie to the trilogy, another extremely badass, villain of the century introduced. Bane is intimidating, ruthless, badass, a myth; everything a great villain should be: pure evil. We immediately are hooked to the story that continues unraveling through the next parts of the movie. We get to see yet another deep and dark interpretation of Bruce Wayne/The Batman. Once again, Christopher Nolan flawlessly executes the complexity of the character and gives us so much more than just that. We see Wayne using his fears, his pain, his suffering to overcome those very things and rise above. We see our beloved Alfred giving his all to what can only be described as his father-son relationship with Bruce. We see new characters appear for the first time, such as the talented burglar, Catwoman, who also gets a very deep character and personality behind the mask. We get to see a mere cop, who gives his city his all, and risks his very life for the great good, representing a symbol of pure goodness. Not a single moment throughout this movie that makes you feel bored or not entertained. It’s filled with amazing CGI; next level story-telling; suspense to keep you at your toes; character development that makes you connect to them in a way you never have before. You can literally feel the pain Bruce is going through, you can literally feel his journey to overcoming it. With deep connections and conclusions to the other two movies, The Dark Knight Rises concludes the perfect trilogy in the most perfect way imaginable, with a deep and emotional ending that had me in tears… Expand

Every scene of The Dark Knight Rises felt important. The characters felt real, the relationships felt genuine. TDKR had much more directorial care, much greater cinematography and camerawork, and took a lot more general effort and planning than any of the other films. How does that relate to "Nolan was bored," or "it was half assed?!" How does that relate to "Nolan was bored," or "it was half assed?!" I was just done rewatching my favourite movie in TDK trilogy, when I heard that Nolan's next project MIGHT involve Oppenheimer's role in the atomic bomb. Turns out Rob Pattinson gifted Chris an anthology of speeches Oppenheimer gave after the war at the Tenet wrap party.

Things are shaping up to be a cinematic universe of overarching themes that bind Nolan's recent movies. TDKR obviously has a nuclear reactor, Interstellar's dust bowl has strong nuclear winter energy, Dunkirk was obviously set in WW2, and Tenet had a future scientist build an entropy reversing algorithm that could destroy the past as well as the future. Nolan seems interested in our annihilation and abuse of technology; looping it from the past to the future.

This ties into one complaint I keep hearing; that Talia serves no purpose in this movie except being Bane's boss. The truth is Bruce 'Howard Hughes' Wayne has nothing out there for him anymore. The Dent Act was passed, effectively wiping out organized crime in Gotham. He can't be Batman anymore because the world has no need for the symbol anymore - remember, this Batman is an idea that only works when people fear him, until the Joker tarnished that symbol in front of Gothamites. So if Bruce has nothing, he can at least invest in clean energy, which is in keeping with his duty to always help Gotham. Talia then gains his trust and turns this tool into an atom bomb. Our two villains are able to game Gotham billionaires: Talia worms her way into Bruce's life, as Bane infiltrates Daggert for his cement - now that's what I call a Temporal Pincer Manoeuve!

The returning cast of Bale, Caine, Oldman and Freeman are at their best here IMO - You can see this entire history of the characters when Alfred pleads with Bruce to throw in the towel as Batman.
Gordon's growing discomfort in going along with the Noble Lie about Dent is so understated. Cillian Murphy's scarecrow cameo is always a delight and the true MVP of the trilogy. The new folks in this ensemble also deliver in spades. Hardy's Bane might be my favourite character in this entire trilogy: his physicality and body language speaks a thousand words. With just a hand on a guy's shoulder, the power dynamics of who's in charge instantly changes. Hathaway's Catwoman is hands down my favourite female character in a Nolan movie! The new characters are introduced in separate events throughout the film, creating interconnected layers on top of another layers. It is packed with ups and downs, playing with my emotions and giving me one of the most eventful cinematic experiences I've ever had so far. The few late twists in the final 30 minutes of the film are a bonus point. Nolan's writing is amazing. Building up at a fast tempo, he manages to maintain a high level of intensity throughout the story. The addition of Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt completes the film really well. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, especially, surprises me with his steady performance. Such an underrated actor he is. The cinematography is sharp. Though the set is not as dark as in the previous films, it still gets me in the mood. Hans Zimmer's score is unmatched here. Top notch. Overall, The Dark Knight Rises is a brilliant conclusion to a world-beating superhero trilogy. I wouldn't say that this is a better work than Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but it is definitely the one that I enjoyed the most. :-)… Expand

A new villain, Bane, has found his way to Gotham City to finish the work begun by Ra’s Al Ghul in Batman Begins to destroy Gotham City and to bring down Batman and Bruce Wayne. Along with Bane, a master thief named Selena Kyle has also taken up residence in the city.

This sets the stage for what is arguably the most explosive movie of the Dark Knight trilogy, and shows us how far Batman and Bruce Wayne must go to defeat evil.

Christopher Nolan is famous for his twist endings; The Dark Knight Rises is no different. The last thirty minutes of the film are an emotional thrill ride that doesn’t feel contrived, and gives comic book fans plenty of red meat to chew on.

The rest of the movie is no less remarkable. Bane is just as strong, just as fast, and just as smart as Batman, and provides an excellent foil. There may have been concerns about his voice from early screenings, but I had no issues with it throughout the film. Tom Hardy does an amazing job bringing the physicality and intelligence of Bane together to create a really intimidating villain.

Selina Kyle (she’s never referred to as “Catwoman” in the film) is ably played by Anne Hathaway, who brings the right level of seductive dangerousness and ambiguous morality to the character.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake is a new addition to the cast, and an excellent one at that. For much of the film Batman isn’t in Gotham City, and Blake is the man on the inside.

Finally, Marion Cotillard, who plays Miranda Tate. She’s probably my favorite performance out of everyone, just because the material she’s given is so good and she does such a tremendous job with it.

Michael Caine’s Alfred Pennyworth and Morgan Freeman’s Lucius Fox are also worth of note, although they play a smaller role than they have in the past.

Together, a tremendous cast, a tremendous movie, and a fitting end to Nolan’s trilogy.… Expand

Hardys hulking physique makes the character all the more threatening, and the first fight he shares with Batman plays out like a horror scene, where he ridicules, demolishes and finally breaks his opponent in an almost casual manner. Hardy turned what could have been in the wrong hands - a laughable character into another iconic villain, and turned the mask handicap to his benefit. He did the same thing with Mad Maxs muzzle in Fury Road, so hes must have a thing for masks covering half his face now… Expand

I was finally lucky enough to see all three of Nolan's Dark Knight films on the big screen, felt like getting drunken on it and really don't want to sober out at all. These films are feasts, they are the ultimate indulgence, and even though I will always love the middle instalment the best, this one can easily compete. There is nothing like these three films for me. They are complete, they are unique, they are utterly bold and autark.
I actually do teach storytelling to young novelists with not always convincing success. Maybe I should change method, just show them the Dark Knight Trilogy and tell them: Think big. Think audaciously. Give it everything and don't hold back. Tell your story so that a child can understand it and so that an old one will be left baffled. Tell it to everyone. Don't try to make a story more than a story. Tell a story that is everything or don't tell a story at all… Expand

The prison scene is absolutely breathtaking. After watching it a 100 times, I am still holding my breath if he will make it. "Fear will find you again". He makes the climb and right before the jump, bats come out (which batman always feared). Whoever wrote this script deserved an Oscar.

I wished Nolan continued making the sequels for the Batman.

Batman was never the same again after this movie.

Christian Bale gave his best performance of the trilogy and Tom Hardy gives his own legendary portrayal of the villain Bane. Yh I still stand by saying this is one of the best endings to a trilogy ever & is just all in all an utter masterpiece of film.

There’s so many reasons this trilogy will always stand out to not only me but so many people in general, it’s so different, unique & **** incredible because not only is it a completely different take on Batman like we had ever seen in media it was also a different take on superhero movies in general it modernised them to look & feel like real life in the best way possible.
Nolan’s trilogy isn’t just about playing hero it’s about politics, heartbreak, failure, winning at a cost, betrayal, terror & corruption which all can relate to real life perfectly.
That along with many many other reasons is why Nolan’s trilogy stands out the most to me.
Tom Hardy’s performance as Bane is still one of his best & most overlooked performances, like when I think of Bane I imagine Tom’s Bane because of how **** terrifying & excellent he is.
There’s so many hauntingly beautiful scenes in this movie that can so scarily happen in real life & the fact Nolan captured that so fantastically is still to this day jaw dropping. Bale will always be my Batman. 10/10… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the filmmaking in The Dark Knight Rises is nothing short of masterful, and stands above the other two in the franchise, especially from a cinematography, production design, and art direction standpoint.

Not to say ‘Begins’ and especially ‘Knight’ were lacking, because they were crafted to astoundment, but ‘Rises’ just took it a step further, especially with the sound, and the fact that it didn’t get nominated for either sound mixing or editing is a straight up insult to the film, and goes to show The Academy was only concerned with the politics of the shooting that year rather than the merit of the actual film, which was fantastical.

On a technical level, it’s **** amazing. It deserved a cinematography, production design, SCORE, sound editing, and sound mixing, and visual effects nomination and there’s no **** denying that.

The production design and art direction were more layered and complex than the past few films. The cinematography did seem a bit more modest than ‘Knight” but it still succeeded at giving us some haunting and memorable images and composition that really fit the more somber and hopeless tone of the film, instead of the fiery orange and blues that bolded the presence of chaos in ‘Knight”.
The score may have taken track basis’ from Begins, but it restated them and added much more variety and emotional power and timing to the film.
The sound design isn’t even an argument, and while the visual effects were actually pretty minimal for the part of a lot of them being practical, that still should’ve given it enough to grasp a nomination over ugly bland CGI **** like The Avengers and that Hunstman movie. I mean come **** on, those two movies have some of the ugliest color palettes and uninspired VFX I’ve ever seen.

In a less competitive year, it easily could have gained a supporting actor nomination for Michael Caine, because he added a whole extra layer of emotional depth to the film with his performance, and boy he really got it out in those few scenes. it gave me a feeling I haven’t really felt in any other movie, bringing tears to my eye.
And no, he wasn’t not in it enough. Check Hal Holbrook for Into the Wild. He was in that movie for a very short time, but gave enough of a performance to get a nomination.
Same type of deal. With very similar roles, actually.

Despite being the best, most relevant, and most well made film of the year, and even one of the best of the decade, Adapted Screenplay, Picture, and Director were extremely unfavorable for the simple fact that the Academy can’t see past “Batman” and because it wasn’t getting anything more than its predecessor did.

I can go on and on and analyze all the relevant and subtle political themes and philosophical depth that is beautifully mixed in with honest and emotionally resonating heroism, postmodern ambivalence, and themes of pain, corruption, and personal crisis and struggle, but it’s not that important to this topic.

People are too busy nitpicking **** that doesn’t even matter (and can easily be debunked) anyway.

The fact of the matter to this question is that it was ungratefully and unreasonably snubbed from the technical categories simply for the fact of the Aurora shooting. There is no other answer. The Academy didn’t want to glorify a film that “represented” such a tragedy.

The Dark Knight Rises is one of the most gritty and beautiful films ever made, and from a technical standpoint, it is one of the absolute greatest next to its predecessor.

It deserved at least 2 or 3 nominations for sure at the very least.

**** the Academy for putting politics over actual filmmaking merit.

The Dark Knight Rises is the perfect ending to the perfect trilogy! Some people may complain about some of the plot holes in the movie but I think the plot holes work! This is the best of the Dark Knight Trilogy. While Batman Begins is much more of a satisfying Batman movie and is probably my favorite Batman film, in terms of the story Christopher Nolan set out to accomplish, The Dark Knight Rises is by farThis is the best of the Dark Knight Trilogy. While Batman Begins is much more of a satisfying Batman movie and is probably my favorite Batman film, in terms of the story Christopher Nolan set out to accomplish, The Dark Knight Rises is by far the most satisfying out of the entire story, it fixes all the issues I had with the hugely overrated The Dark Knight, and absolutely concluded the series on a megaton note. The Dark Knight Rises is an EPIC of anarchy, grief, isolation, corruption, justice and injustice and redemption. It's a massive 160 minute movie that surprisingly goes by at a steady pace compared to the previous film which felt like a 4 Hour Long Nightmare that didn't feel like a Batman movie.

The stuff I love about Rises is that it feels like a balance between the comic book Batman and the thriller feel of The Dark Knight. It doesn't unbalance into one way or the other, it feels appropriate in the way they're handling this material. While most of the movie has the now overbearing overly colorful dialogue Nolan loves to to write in his scripts, he actually manages to go back to the first of the trilogy by adding a little bit of humor in it. Not to the point where it's overly dumb or ruins gigantic moments, but just enough to make the audience feel comfortable, like they are in a Batman movie and they aren't watching Goodfellas.

In Rises, this movie is not just about Batman or Bruce Wayne, it's a story about everyone in Gotham City who are guilty regardless of their innocence and how they have to redeem themselves by saving millions just like how Batman has to redeem his image. The movie doesn't have much Batman action, but what we get is a captivating story about the people in Gotham City fighting a broken system that an outsider has only made more fractured. There is a huge theme of Isolation, not just in Gotham, but in the prison Bruce is in as he tries to escape it and get his health back to normal. What it comes down is a triumphant moment of not only Bruce overcoming the current situation, but becoming the man he once was, the life that he threw away after the events of the previous film.

What it leads to is an highly emotional ending proving Batman's immortality, just as Ra's al Ghul proved his in a hallucination. If you're not in tears as Alfred painfully cries "I Failed You.", then I don't think you've understood how masterful Nolan as a director really is. The entire final moments of Rises are some of the best, most incredible finales from the 2010's.

There really isn't another director working today like Christopher Nolan. Not only can he make compelling smaller films, not only is he one of the only people in commercial Hollywood working on some of the most original thought provoking blockbusters of the last 10 years, but he is also one of the best when it comes to understanding superhero films. The Dark Knight Rises is a triumph regardless of the criticism it has gotten over the years. There will be many more Batman movies, but none will probably be as greater than this in my eyes. Truly a masterpiece even coming back to it nearly a decade later… Expand

Underrated film. The Dark Knight Rises is an incredible film.

Bane is absolutely amazing. It's hard to top the Joker, but somehow Bane almost does it. He's intelligent and genuinely a threat to Bruce. And every single one of his lines isUnderrated film. The Dark Knight Rises is an incredible film.

I love how he tries breaking Bruce in every way possible: financially, physically, and spiritually. Seizing his money, using Selina to betray him, breaking his batck, and finally destroying his spirit.

But- Batman rises above Bane, and rises above the sins of his past. He becomes more than Batman, he is truly able to become the true legend he always wanted to be.

This film is truly incredible. Bruce's struggles and climb to rise above the man he was- It's great stuff.… Expand

Nolan is the king of endings. And this one might be the most satisfying of all, with astounding closure. The plot is hard to follow at first but then it becomes clear what Bane has been doing. The plot is hard to follow at first but then it becomes clear what Bane has been doing. The twist at the end makes it clear that he is not a Bond/world domination villain but instead a sympathetic character with a past. This film looks amazing and is a pure popcorn film from start to finish, delivering thrills and huge moments served with a side of a Zimmer score filled with braaaaams that probably disturbed the neighbours. The 4K UHD is sublime on this, especially with Nolan’s great use of IMAX cameras. It is the height of action cinema and the practical effects are bloody amazing; the last half hour of rises is just an awesome spectacle, and it makes me question why people regard it as a disappointing end to the trilogy. I think it worked. For me, the emotions the Dark Knight trilogy brings out make it a contender for the best trilogy of all time, even if it does fall just short of the flawless LotR trilogy. The origin story is written so well, the Joker’s reign is terrifying yet spectacular and the conclusion gives you tied-up plots and closure, including cameos from Ra’s al Ghul and Scarecrow to remind you of the journey you have been on with Bruce Wayne. The final fight for Gotham’s freedom and the ending montage makes up for the slow start the concluding chapter opts for. But it’s been 8 years anyway and we need time to establish how things have changed and how power has shifted in Gotham. The supporting cast are perfect, especially Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Caine and Anne Hathaway, and the intertwining of the multiple plots in this film is done quite well. Nolan makes films that are designed for the cinema, and I wish I’d seen this one back then. Definitely the better blockbuster superhero film of 2012… Expand

The Dark Knight Rises for me remains the best of the three Christopher Nolan Batman films and it gives the series a nice closure to things by its end or at least enough to make way for the next director to do their own take on the capedThe Dark Knight Rises for me remains the best of the three Christopher Nolan Batman films and it gives the series a nice closure to things by its end or at least enough to make way for the next director to do their own take on the caped crusader. The film picks up the events well from the end of The Dark Knight, by moving forward 8 years, and it makes a nice shift in tone to see Bruce Wayne, as no longer being a show off billionaire in the public eye, but instead becoming a recluse, who feels now that at this point Gotham no longer needs Batman, due to the massive cut down in crime (at the start of the film that is) due to the Dent act (imposed by the late Harvey Dent). The overall tone of the film is also keeping in check with Nolan's previous outings, which is pretty serious most of the time, but he does allow for a few moments of humour here and there. Tom Hardy does an excellent job as the main baddie, Bane, the big muscly terrorist, and former member of the league of shadows, who wears a specially designed oxygen mask, that keeps pumping gas into his body to relieve the pain he feels, as a result of his time in the unescapable prison. My one criticism though of his performance is the way his voice is treated via the oxygen mask, at times you can't really make out what he's saying, as it sounds literally like he has put his hand over his mouth while he talks! But once you watch the Blu-ray disc you can put on the subtitles to make out what the hell he's saying! ;-) Hardy himself built up his body and added an extra 30 pounds of weight on for the part and it certainly does show, as he makes for an effective and intimidating figure, who is a far cry from the mindless Bane we saw in Batman and Robin. And with his height and size, Bane makes a very dangerous foe with his intelligence and physical strength.

Hardy as Bane get's some memorable lines of dialogue such as his first scene where he announces himself very effectively when he is being held captive on the plane by the FBI and as the agent tries to interrogate a masked man, Bane says "Perhaps he is wondering why someone would shoot a man, before throwing him out of a plane". And later in the scene when Bane makes his escape and he stops one of his men from leaving with him he's "No they expect one of us in the wreckage, brother!" and the man asks if they have started the fire and Bane replies "Yes, the fire rises!". And one of Hardy's most chilling moments comes when he confronts John Daggett, who buys out Wayne enterprises, and Daggett says to him "I'm in charge!" and Bane says to "Do you FEEL in charge?" which sends a shiver down Dagget's spine, as he realises he hasn't gone long to live with Bane in this frame of mind. And as Dagget realises what Bane's plan he says "you're evil!" and Bane says "I'm NECESSARY evil!" and breaks Dagget's neck. And then there is the great scene where Bane fights with Batman in the sewers and says "I will show you where I have made my home while preparing to bring justice. Then I will break you!". And as Batman shakily get's up from his beating Bane says "Ah yes! I was wondering what would break first! You're spirit?" and he grabs Batman and hoists high above his head "Or your body?!" and he slams Batman against his knee, breaking Batman's back in the process. And then there is Marion Cotillard who is excellent as Miranda Tate, a wealthy investor who becomes romantically involved with Wayne and later reveals a dark secret. Marion was previously cast in Inception (Nolan's previous film), and she continues to do well here. And yeah OK THIS IS A PLOT SPOILER! Cottilard's best scene is where she reveals herself to be the daughter of Ras Al Ghul, Talia and she stabs Bruce in his side with a knife. And she tells him her background and that Bane was her protector and she says "I honour my father by finishing his work. You see its the slow knife that takes its time, the knife that waits years without forgetting, then slips quietly between the bones... that's the knife that cuts deepest!". Jospeh Gordon-Levit as John Blake, the young cop who plays his part in trying to save Gotham from Bane, is good and at the end of the film we find out a thing or two about him. Gordon-Levit has some good moments as well such as the scene where Batman rescues him near the end by beating up Bane's thugs and he leaves one of them groaning and Blake says "You missed a spot!" and Batman kicks unconscious. Another good scene is where Blake visits Bruce at his mansion and tells him he knows that he is Batman and "I don't know why you took the fall for Dent's murder, but I'm still a believer in the Batman. Maybe you should get out and get some fresh air and check out the details, those details might need your help… Expand

When you think about it, this movie has such a simple story at its core. Bane has a bomb, Batman needs to stop him, however, it’s nearly 3 hours long so obviously some layers need to be added.
