In this tragic moment, the entertainment industry is innovating solutions at an alarming pace to keep the tons of money that keep it floating. A shameful reality of an essential art. In the middle of the storm is Nolan, hugging “Tenet” as a big hope for cinema.
The first highlight is the music. The first collaboration between Nolan and Ludwig Goransson creates an aura that superbly complements the narrative speed and tension. A beautiful work by Goransson. The festival of visual effects and the complexity of the concept will captivate the public in different forms. This is not his best visual work, but there is a sense of bravery and intellect in the mechanics of the whole film. I appreciated this as much as the strong bond between the visual and the narrative. Nolan explores a conception of time and space sufficiently complex to assimilate, and that is appreciated the strong coherence between the image of space and the narrative time. The authenticity, freshness, and complexity of the script might compromise the public, especially due to the speed at which the events happens, but I take it as a mental ability exercise that, with attention and a critical mind, the resolutions will stimulate the concentrated ones. About the acting, there is not much drama. But the tension that is accomplished is adequate and derives from the interaction between the delusion of greatness of Kenneth Branagh and the resentment of Elizabeth Debicki. Apart from this, the characters have personality and attitude, and the promptness of the chemistry between John David Washington and Robert Pattison facilitates the focus to the goal. “Tenet” is an experience that is worth a lot. Amidst its complexity, there is a very interesting show to watch and, even though we may have to go back to the film several times to find some answers, it will always be a journey full of excitement and surprises.

Nowadays, it's really rare to be witness of the original concept in the movies. I'm not sure if I'm dumb or it's just Nolan's way of thinking. Which is apperently on another level. Every aspect of filmography is done brilliantly. Action sequences keep the audience on edge and engaged. Maybe the absence of H. Zimmer will not be very pleasing. However almost every dialogue was all Greek to me If you know what I mean. I had no idea what is going on and why. Bottom line... it's my least favorite movie from Nolan's discography. Expand

However it was said by the actor and director of the movie himself, Tom Wiseau, that the movie was intended to be black humor, hinting that the awkward dialogues and bad acting were put there deliberately to create confusion and was not meant to be taken seriously.

TENET felt like such a movie. But what worries me the most is that TENET was probably in fact a serious attempt at being a pretentious movie. The plot and dialogue were absolute nonsensical that it slowly became comedic, were it not that Nolan intentions probably was to make an intelligent movie, however done it so that it was deceiving and played games with the audience perception, but underestimated the intellect of the audience, meaning you cannot cover up nonsensical plotlines with confusing dialogues. Now I am all for absurd dialogues in the style of maybe like Quentin Tarantino's movies, but it needs to be executed smartly, not randomly.

Therefore as a deliberate black comedy, I would have given this movie a 9, if it was intended that way, but I think not. So I give it 3 stars and this movie might end up in the list as one of the worst films ever made next to "The Room"....

Only Christopher Nolan would be bold and ambitious enough to create a wildly wonderful masterpiece like this, and by God, it is indeed a masterpiece. The music was really good, surprisingly. Shame it wasn't Zimmer (just kidding, the music was fantastic, I'm just a Zimmer superfan). Worst crime - it’s actually boring and completely lacking anything that can be emotionally engaged with. The protagonist is literally just that - a vehicle to push the narrative along... or should I say exposition. There are only a few bright spots of energy is this movie - but regretfully, they are hamstrung by the framework he set - simultaneously pulling their dramatic punches, and at the same time turning into its own meme. This is one of those movies (like Us) which deserves a really cool 15 minute student film... but unfortunately was funded for a feature length (and in the case of Tenet - grossly over-funded).

The central ‘tenet’ of the movie actually fundamentally doesn’t make sense - even internally. Once you realise it’s all fluff, and no substance, the curtain of Nolan’s deceit is pulled back to leave only an underwhelming self-indulgence that has an almost complete lack of humanity. No one actually acts / reacts like a real person... something that was desperately needed in this wholly unrealistic and ungrounded film-school SciFi concept piece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Christopher Nolan has done movies explaining concepts of space (Interstellar), dreams (Inception) and society (The Dark Knight Trilogy). This time he made a movie on time. Although I like the fact that he made a movie about time travellers which is nothing like what we would have done if we were given a chance, it wasn't done properly. A lot of people who are writing praises for this movie are accusing the critics of not being able to understand the concept of the movie. It's not that people don't understand the concept; sometimes the rules of the universe are established and then they themselves are not being followed.

Think about it. If suppose someone is being shot. So they get hit with the bullet and then they bleed. Simple, right? Now think of this in reverse. They will have to stop bleeding and then the bullet will pass through them. But in this movie they bleed AFTER the bullet passes through them, as though their blood is being affected by the reverse bullet. It would have made sense if this was said at some point but it isn't. I'm giving the example of the gunfire because that's about half the scenes in this movie. The car chase scenes, however, were done absolutely correctly. The sailing of the ships, the explosions, the part where The Protagonist meets himself, everything was done in absolute perfection.

There were many times when the movie brought up things that were never talked about later. The movie began with a scene about an anti-terror squad to show the protagonist. But this was never brought up ever again. They said they need to have committed an act for the positive entropy to work, but most of the times they don't do those acts, especially in the fight scenes or the ending when Kat shoots Sator. Neil is said to have come from the future, but he doesn't act in reverse the way other people from the future do.

Filmmaking should always follow the rule of "show, don't tell", which this movie had to continuously violate because of how complicated it was. This is a movie that was too complex even for Christopher Nolan, such that even the ordinary audience can easily pinpoint the mistakes. He bit a lot bigger than he could chew. Let's hope the next time he makes a movie that is complex to look at but easy to grip over like how Inception or The Dark Knight were.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet is a great film, but don’t get me wrong, it isn’t exactly the second coming of Christ. Some of the action is an art form (after watching I'm still watching the first 6 minutes just to see the sheer greatness of that theatre shooting) the time technology is fairly understandable but some of it still confuses me (if i didn’t drop it what makes me make it come up? And, if I throw it, could I make it fly back to me?) but it doesn’t distract from the plot too much. John David Washington [the protagonist] plays his role rather awesomely, and Robert Patterson (who is my second favorite character, [Neil])
gives fresh breath of air. Overall, great film. I consider a good spending of 2 1/5 hours.

Though it is probably one of Nolan’s most polarizing film. I was especially Flabbergasted by the visual editing (not CGI) and the cinematography. The music composed by Ludwig Göransson was immensely appealing and unique. The way he implemented new musical ideas such as reverse music was spectacular. The plot, especially the ending (which most people cannot understand) was beautiful. So beautiful that it’s really difficult to understand. This is a very complex film indeed. But complex storylines can prove to be immensely beautiful. Once understood, one will remain aghast with beautiful story Nolan has built upon. Some emotions are very open, like Katherine’s love for her son and the hatred with Sator (one must remain aware of the fact that human emotions are not always good. Exploring the evil side of human emotions is also important and impactful). Meanwhile some emotions are very difficult to recognize, like the friendship of The Protagonist and Neil. The few impactful twists and the marvelous world that Nolan has created just like Inception is remarkable and can be cherished upon for long. There were some imperfections which prevent it to be Nolan’s best work. The story was a bit fast paced in the first half of the film. Also, the sound mixing proved it to be difficult for people to listen to the dialogues, which can easily be solved by subtitles (duh!). But all in all it was a phenomenal piece of filmography. It is a modern masterpiece which would take time for people to understand the depth of. One thing is for sure, watch it twice and then make an opinion. Expand

what the Matrix did right with bullet time, this movie completely destroys the mystical backwards effect and trow it in your face like an over the top cake. I hate to see all movies with a pinch of action turn into action specticals, like if the audience doesn't allready know it's possible. Carefully injecting these special effects and pacing is a thing of the past, none of the modern movies can compete with the action movies of the past simple because a bunch of idiots can make movies these day, same goes for the writing process.

All this is contained in the latest Nolan's movie Tenet, which in my opinion is definitely worth going to the cinema. Even if someone spoils the story for you, you probably won't understand it anyway. You just have to see this and you will probably think for a long time what you actually saw. Expand

One of the best movie I have seen. A mind-blowing masterpiece from Nolan. 1 mark deducted for its complexity, would be hard for the average audience to understand. Overall, Nolan extended its legend in Inception. A Masterpiece!

An exaggerated film whose only purpose is to complicate the viewer, but I wish he could do it with cinema. These ambiguities are created only by the chaotic and crowded montage and a series of theoretical dialogues, and no cinema is seen in it. Also, we do not see any coherent story during the film and the events of the film do not form a script at all. There is no characterization in the film, the protagonist character is not made at all and is not believable, also the other characters are completely caricatured and extra, also during the film and its artificial communication, not a bit of feeling is created. Aside from the fact that the film does not even come close to form, it is also very beginner in terms of technique, excessive cuts, and sometimes weird and inappropriate! The opening and closing sequences of the film are highly artificial, and the final sequence is saturated with a large number of cuts, aerial shots and rudimentary special effects. The only slight positive aspect of the film is its acting, and the acting of the antagonist character is defensible. In general, the film is considered to be a very bad and weak film, which is like a puzzle without a pattern, meaning that after putting the white pieces together, which is not a difficult task, it has nothing to offer. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good twist on a cool espionage like movie. Not his best work mainly because it made no sense at all. The movie would like you to feel it has purpose yet it takes a very deterministic view of reality. Why invert after the missions complete? If you’re having a briefing an hour after the event and everyone isn’t dead then doesn’t that mean it succeeded? Therefore, why invert at all. If what’s going to happen happens then there’s no free will. I didn’t see the connection between Kat and the protagonist. I woulda just let her die tbh. The characters had no solid connections that made you root one way or another. Besides all the plot holes it was visually entertaining at times. However, the story will leave you wondering wtf was the point of the movie? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet is a lesser epic but with far more potential than other bigger works.

The acting in Nolan films are not always the best, I don't know if it's the casting choices or the fact the storylines, cinematography leave the actors behind. It's not that he uses bad actors, it's just In my opinion you can never truly relate to the characters. However, Tenet fools you into thinking this is the case again, but then makes a splash with some top acting from John David Washington and Elizabeth Debicki.

Unlike many Nolan films(an example Dunkirk) the emotion is cold, almost unimportant but in Tenet you do start to root for any chance of romance and that becomes are driver throughout the film. Quite rare.

The film does genuinely feel less epic, most of the shots are in close quarters and if they're not, it's at sea or on a wasteland. You can see this similarly in inception, but that does manage to have large scape epic scenes mixed in.

You do start towards the end realise again, through subtle (at the time, pointless) shots that you are meant to be looking at this film in a certain way, but don't quite get in until it unravels and bang! it hits you... Damn, Nolan got me again.

Those moments are great in Nolan films when you collectively start nodding in the cinema when you all piece it together.

Overall a good Nolan film... Good clothing, cars and bling, not so much scenery and atmosphere.

Only real sticking point - the Score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 2 hours of exposition won’t save this movie from being so obviously “pretend smart”. Unlike interstellar, it throws around terms like “entropy”, “inversion” and “algorithm” in very nonsensical ways. The scientific definition of all these terms is much more interesting than what the movie does with them. For example, the “algorithm” is a 9 piece lego set invented by the future’s Oppenheimer (who since we are in 2020, must be female) who is only alluded to in one dialogue scene to establish her gender. That’s it, nothing else is built on her character. The villain is this fat, drunk, wife beating, eastern block oligarch (who knew we could still have stereotypes in 2020) who wants to end the world by assembling this lego set. Yes the plot is that stupid. However, up until the 1:30 hour mark the sheer charisma of the main character keeps you interested, however that falls apart exactly during the 1:45 mark when the main character starts fighting himself, one of them is masked so the other one doesn’t know he’s fighting himself, and THE VERSION WHO KNOWS IS FIGHTING HIMSELF STARTS SHOOTING AT HIMSELF. This is so damn stupid. Such a waste of potential. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had high expectations for this movie, but it turned out to be a big disappointment. Nolan is a highly meticulous director/writer (my favourite in fact) paying attention to the smallest details. Hence I find the many plot holes and faults in the storyline inexplicable. A few to mention: Why would Kat tell her family secrets to a complete stranger after talking with him for less than 5minutes? Why would they risk the mission to please an emotionally unstable Kats desire for vengeance. Sator would have died anyways (They only had to make sure he doesn't die before the algorithm is secured) Why are all locks and security systems so easy to breach(Oslo freeport, Stalsk-12) After being tightly surrounded by three trucks, the Estonian guards in the convoy still don't realise they are going to get ambushed. Why did the blue team had to fail preventing the explosion in the end? Blue team should have been the plan B in case Protagonist and Ives fails securing the algorithm. Why did Ives break the protocol in the end(no-one who knows the location of the algorithm can stay alive)? If Protagonist was the one who founded Tenet in the future why did he instruct Ives to kill themselves after securing the algorithm. How could he be sure that Ives gonna break the protocol? If Ives did obey the protocol and killed Protagonist, Tenet wouldn't have been founded in the future. Finally the cast:
Kat was annoying, she got too much airtime without an important role. The protagonist was bland. Sator was alright. Ives, Priya, Crosby and Mahir were good but they had small roles.
Neil was carrying the movie in my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The action sequences are incredible, no doubt. Robert Pattinson is proved to be a phenomenon. However, the plot is not acceptable. First and foremost, if it's happening in the future, why on earth nothing is high-tech? Secondly, Inception was about a guy's dream, Interstellar was about the galaxy, and NASA stuff, a father and a daughter. Memento was about a guy's short memory. spoiler alert! Tenet, on the other hand, is about the entire world which is gonna be screwed. And there is this woman, Kat, who is only worried about her son and jeopardizes a worldwide mission based on her selfish emotion! Things can be inverted in time! OK! But the movie is about a woman being blackmailed by her husband and told to be free if avoids seeing her son. SHE CANNOT. All I am trying to say is that if we are supposed to see some fast-paced action sci-fi about world war 3 or a drama about a mother, her insane chosen husband, and her schoolboy? No way I can't ignore the weaknesses of a movie about the entire world's destiny. By the way, what's wrong with casting? the only actor I loved was Robert Pattinson who showed that even without any outrageous character, his performance keeps us watching. Neither could I identify with the protagonist, hope for his best, have his best interest in my heart, nor with the villain, nor with the contemporary fellows, nor the future, nor Kat. if every single of them perished, fine by me. Nolan made a mistake about timing. not in the movie but in reality. we wouldn't be scared if people from the future came to end our world. 2020? let them ruin the entire world. The movie is somewhere between 7 and 8 because of the notion, sexy visuals, music but somewhere between 5 and 6 due to Kat's stupidity and motivation, John David Washington's not being a good choice for leading actor, the plot holes, and some useless roles. Quantum science allows assumptions on how time flow could be manipulated in a future reality. But this is completely fictional. Time flow in this movie is how the writers/Nolan needed it to be to create a complicated, mystical and multi-layered plot and its fictional world. The problem here is that this is the only reason for playing with the audience's state of expectations and understanding. Just like with any plot armor, this makes me feel frustrated and I can't relate to any of the motivations, background, and characters. Unlike Oblivion with its dream world, which was scientifically reasonable and also relatable to anyone who knows the nature of dreams, this movie doesn't have what makes an Aha moment. The movie is quite long, has some issues with pacing and some of the scenes feel very similar. Nonetheless if you like Nolan's work there's no way you should miss out on this one. Expand

It feels like he felt under pressure for exceeding the mind changing movies he made before and has taken it too far. Just to much.. way to much. The basic idea isn't to bad but it was rather an pitynlgy head shaking than an incredulously fascinated one.
No bond with the characters arises, they act not traceable and the dialogues were also bad. Also the music is way better in his other movies. Only positive point I can find here is for the image-rich action scenes, but thats not enough in 2020. Too bad, I was very hyped.

Best Nolan film yet! Fantastic plot and screenplay. Not to mention the unbelievable acting and budding star power between Pattinson and Washington. Can’t wait to see it again!

It is really mind-blowing and confusing at the start. But as you think about it for a couple of sleepless nights afterwards, you see the picture and the logic and you're likely to find it so fascinating. I love how Nolan include so many tricks and clues in his movies. At first, people might see them as extra information, but at the end, they might realize that it's the most important clue. All Nolan movies are worth rewatching and rewatching. It's a great movie to watch with anyone, from your closest friends at home to strangers in the theater. Every time you rewatch it you get something new out of it, like reading a fantastic book. This is AMAZING, ABSOLUTELY. Expand
