First, maybe let's turn down the music and sound please? My eardrums were being raped in some scenes of this movie thanks to horrible music editing and mixing. It's just too loud.
Next, what was the point of the first half ? I kept asking myself "what's going on? who is this?" and trying to understand the fast-paced dialogue between characters. Critics are praising the acting, I am sorry what? Acting is barely passable level, it's just bland and soulless. No emotional investment at all. Movie tries to explain time-reversing things and people and just fails at it. Bunch of characters are expositions and "you are looking for that guy/girl actually" transitions between dialogues. Compared to, let's say Interstellar or Inception, this movie is just boring and less interesting. There is less visual spectacle (apart from 2-3 scenes) and most of the time you don't understand what is going on. 2h 30 min feels like 4 hours, but ironically if it was 4 hours, probably would have had more explanations and reasons behind stuff that was happening. I saw this movie in theatre (In UK you can, with mask on). Out of 10 people on whole room, only 2 people said they liked it (I came with 5 others who I knew and asked other 4 what they thought). What a disaster.
Other than cinematography and actual non-CGI work put in to create this movie, I have nothing good to say. Really poor.

An aesthetic showcase that's uninterested in human beings (and what does Christopher Nolan have against decent sound mixing?)

In Tenet, Christopher Nolan is again examining the vagaries of time, a theme that's front and centre in much of his previous work. It's undeniably fascinating to see a tent pole Hollywood production engaging with issues such as entropy, thermodynamics, reversibility and irreversibility, the grandfather paradox, and T-symmetry, but the film's main problems are more fundamental, existing almost entirely at a structural level (although some of the performances don't help, nor does the abysmal sound mixing). It looks incredible and the practical effects in the action scenes are extraordinary, but there's nothing of note under the shiny veneer. It's a film with no interest in human beings.

The plot is straightforward in outline. We follow a CIA operative known as The Protagonist (John David Washington) as he is recruited into an ultra-secret international espionage squad called Tenet. His mission is simple – at some point in the future, someone has figured out how to reverse the entropy of objects, effectively being able to send them back along the timeline without having to reverse time itself. The implications of this are catastrophic and have set humanity on course for World War III, unless The Protagonist can figure out who is doing it and put a stop to their machinations.

Tenet is an event movie in every way; this 150-minute, $200m+ original idea is a massive studio tent pole written and directed by the most popular filmmaker alive. And I will say this, the budget is on the screen. No small amount of that money, of course, went on the practical effects (incredibly, there are only 280 VFX shots) – whether it be bungee-jumping onto the side of a building, a close-quarters fight where one of the combatants moves in reverse, a Boeing 747 jet crashing into a building, a highway chase where some of the cars are going forward in time and others are going backwards, or an all-out battle scene where, again, some of the soldiers travel forward whilst others move in reverse.

Along the same lines, the cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema is stunning, as he mixes 15-perf 70mm IMAX film with traditional 70mm stock and a few 35mm sequences in a manner where the shifts in aspect ratio are barely noticeable. It's the kind of film that could only exist in the medium of cinema – no other artform could even begin to approximate its aesthetic design and splendour. A celluloid purist, Nolan has always made a big stink about the artistic importance of cinema, and Tenet finds him pushing the aesthetic boundaries of what the artform can accomplish.

Unfortunately, no matter how visually unique or aesthetically impressive it may be, no amount of gloss can hide the fact that the screenplay suffers from some fundamental problems – most notably, it's bereft of emotion and populated with cardboard cut-outs that are supposed to be characters. The Protagonist isn't a person with an interiority; he's a cypher, the audience's surrogate so that Nolan can explain the plot to us. He's emotionless, void of relatable motivation, has no psychological through-line, and nothing even resembling a character arc. As for Kenneth Branagh as Russian oligarch Andrei Sator, he might be the most cliched Russian villain ever put on screen. He isn't a person – he's a collection of near-satirical tics, clichés, and elements from other, better films.

As Kat, Sator's trophy wife, Elizabeth Debicki fairs better, but her role is still poorly written. A common criticism of Nolan's filmography is that his female characters tend to be victims. I'm not saying that Nolan is obliged to write more rounded female characters. Much like Michael Mann, Nolan's films are androcentric. And there's nothing wrong with that. However, in Mann, there are strong female characters with considerable agency, whereas in Tenet, Kat is nothing more than a pawn who's defined almost entirely in terms of her role as a self-sacrificing mother.

At one point early in the film, The Protagonist is told "don't try to understand it, just feel it", which is advice that Nolan is also offering to his audience. The problem is that there's nothing to feel. Unlike Memento (which remains Nolan's best by a long way), which packed a seriously emotional gut-punch when we learn what's at the heart of the puzzle, Tenet offers us nothing more than the task of deciphering it for its own sake. There's no payoff, nothing to make us want to penetrate a story uninterested in depicting real people or real emotional stakes. More enamoured by the complexity of its own design than by any of the people contained within, it's an emotional void – all technical virtuosity and surface sheen with nothing at its core.

While I like the general concept, it doesn't work for me. You could make a movie that's hard to follow along - if the pictures are nice, it can work. Or you could make a movie with poor cinematography and a great story - but in my opinion this film has neither of those. It is hard to follow, full of tropes. Military, machine gun, special agent, helicopter, yacht, beautiful woman, guy doing chin ups near the oilrig (that's a new one I guess) plutonium, end of tze world, nuvlear thread - no, just no. We've seen these ingredients too many times, they're boring as hell. A movie has to be satisfying because you care about the characters, you can follow the story, you are curious about how it ends - this film doesn't check any of these boxes. Would rate it lower but I know that many modern movies are even worse, so 4/10 Expand

I loved Inception, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, etc. but this one has serious problems. The acting is good, but the dialogues are hard to follow, at least after a single viewing. Character development is minimal, we never even learn the name of the main character and that's quite a hindrance to any sort of emotional investment.

Any movie that tries to explain time-travel in a pseudo-scientific way is going to irk me. Everything is pointless, there is no free will, everything already happened so everybody can just do whatever the frack they want, regardless of any consequences to anybody else, because that's what was supposed to happen anyway. Apocalypse, here we come! The oxygen, really? How did they came up with that inverted lungs crap? Absolute rubbish for a plot, not a good plan.

Some of the action scenes are worth watching, but all in all I really didn't enjoy this movie as much as I had hoped.

They are like a designer couch nobody wants to sit on, because at first glance it looks extraordinary, but the more you look at it you think it’s all concept and function but what’s most important isn’t there: it isn’t emotional and doesn’t touch your heart! Christopher Nolan movies are all pseudo intellectual! He tries to be so smart and intelligent that he forgets that feelings and emotions make a good movie and when it’s smart and clever it will be a very good movie. When you don’t care about the protagonists in a movie anymore the director has failed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The thing about Tenet is if you’re obsessive about understanding it, you’re not going to have a good time. Tenet is a good time. It’s an exhilarating watch full of masterly crafted action sequences and beautiful bouts of cinematography. The characters are great and entertaining— except for the women characters, but what more can we expect from Nolan— and the acting is stellar. However, it doesn’t make sense. It constantly just doesn’t make sense. The sound mixing in some places makes the dialogue impossible to hear or understand. However, you must get this principal fact: the only way to build suspense in your audience when you’re making a time travel movie where the events you see unfold you’ve already seen happen is to completely and utterly confuse your audience. And Tenet does that! I do not enjoy it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the movie. Ray Bradbury basically revolutionized the science fiction genre by saying that realism isn’t a prerequisite for good science fiction. Before that, everyone wanted to know how fantastical futuristic machines would work down to the exact descriptions of everything and anything. Literally, before Ray Bradbury came into the scene half of science fiction wasn’t even fiction— there was no story. It was mostly just people describing cool things that could be a thing in the future. You have to suspend your disbelief to enjoy the movie. It’s like when you go to a magic show— you know its not real, but it doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Tenet does make sense enough for you to be amazed by the twists and turns of the plot unfolding as you’ve seen it fold before, but enough to be dissatisfying to critics. Nolan does a great job at making a horribly confusing and out there concept— like time travel, and this theory that has been thought of in quantum mechanics for a while— as real as you can. But there’s just a principal problem in all time travel stories is that they’re walking paradoxes. If you think too hard, your brain will start to hurt. It’s one of those movies that you have to watch a video on afterwards to understand. But it doesn’t make it less enjoyable— take Primer for example, a science fiction movie about time travel that is regarded as possibly the best time travel plot of all time. This is Primer but if Primer had a Hollywood budget and wasn’t a Sundance film. Like a character says at the beginning of the movie, “don’t try to understand it”. You shouldn’t understand it. You should enjoy it! That’s what movies are there to do. Finally, Robert Pattinson is in it, so you know it’s going to be a great movie nonetheless. Did I mention some stellar acting? Because its there. I wish Nolan knew how to write female characters, though. The only girl in the entire movie is a damsel in distress type with the biggest “I’ll do anything for my children” cliche in the entire movie. Yet, it still fits into the movie thematically— one of the biggest pulls of the movie that show up time and time again is the individual vs the group. What’s one person’s life if you want to save the world? This movie does a wonderful job at exploring that, especially with Neil and the Protagonists relationship. Man, C. Nolan can’t write women, but where he can’t write woman unintentionally gay subtext always follows. Every scene in this movie is entertaining, and a deliriously confusing ride. It’s not on the same level as The Dark Knight or Memento, but that in no way shape or form makes it a bad movie. It’s kind of on the same level as Interstellar or Inception in my eyes. I went into the movie hyped, and left the movie hyped. I wasn’t disappointed, but it didn’t exceed my expectations either. But my expectations were high, and they were definitely fulfilled. I wanted good things and I got them. This is just all to say that Tenet is a good enjoyable film but not without its faults that comes with Nolan’s filmmaking time and time again. I recommend you watch it! Expand

And yet.... An AMAZING accomplishment. Somehow Christopher Nolan makes almost every scene not only engaging, but compelling.

Rather than passive wonder, you're somehow caught up in the action; all the fear triggers are pulled, even though your "higher" brain is completely lost. Which somehow makes it even scarier.

It is the most wondrously engaging (or engagingly wondrous) film I've seen (I'm 55). Nolan stands alone, and this is his most intense. Okay, tamp your expectations down, so that they can be properly exceeded. This is a film that needs to be seen on a large, large screen with loud sound. See this in a theater, see it often.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very much a Nolan film. Spent the extra money and saw in in IMAX. Beautifully filmed - as is expected with any Nolan picture, and well acted. The story for me was actually somewhat predictable (not too difficult once you watch a bunch of his films and get into the groove of his style). Not that that is bad; if you liked Inception and Intersteller, chances are you'll like this too.

So why the low grade of only a 6? If I was WB and gave up 205 million for this to be made, and then screened the film and noticed that literally half the dialog was muddled to obscurity, I'd demand he either remix it, or return some money. I had the same complaint with Interstellar (although only in certain parts of the film when the droning sound overloaded any intelligent levels for dialog comprehension). It wasn't the physical theaters fault (Interstellar was at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, and everyone around me had the same reaction). It's as if it's almost a tactic; "maybe if people don't understand the dialog they will see it multiple times so they can finally get it". I've seriously heard better dialog audio in student films. I would be embarrassed to put my name on this film if I were on the sound mixing team.

So there you have it. Without good audio, it doesn't matter how many millions you spend on something.

Finally, last point is, the character development was two-dimensional and flat. I actually cared more about Branagh's character than all the others (and he's the villain). The female lead came off very one-note as a "generic mother role". Her response to "the world (could) end..." is "oh, my son!". Really? Anyway, it was a ride indeed, and not the worst film out there, but the film never lived up to the extended trailer that I saw what seems like an eternity ago.

I would run to see a Nolan directed Bond film because we would have some assurance that the Producers wouldn't allow for a complete waste of a 200 million dollar budget. This was not the case here and I saw it in Imax. Expand

It is actually a very straightforward James Bond style action movie, but instead of one-liners and sex scenes we have a half-boiled attempt to explain entropy and time-inversion. John David Washington is wonderful, even though his character is a blank slate. Robert Pattinson is great, even though he's mostly just a plot device. Kenneth Branagh chews the scenery as usual, and his 'russian' accent is inconsistent and silly. Elizabeth Debicki is great, it's too bad she was written as an empty shell who only speaks in relation to her husband and son. The music is well done, if a little heavy handed especially when attempting to build tension. Tenet is 2 1/2 hours long and is crazy boring, the actual time bending fun happens at 1 1/2 hours and by that point I was so stir crazy it was underwhelming. The gimmick of it being mirrored is a fun idea that's been done better in literature and other actual sci-fi. It's all a big waste of time and is a dumb movie that poses as being smart. Expand

It's about a secret agent who embarks on a dangerous, time-bending mission to prevent the start of World War III. This movie .......I don't know how to describe how I feel about it. I watched it yesterday and being honest I feel like I have a better understanding of the movie now than while I was watching it in time. And that's not a bad thing! Most of Christopher Nolan's films make me feel this way. This movie is very complex in a good way. There are so many layers and seeing them all unfold and intertwine during the movie was really interesting. I love the complexity of the characters too. Each new face you see on the screen, you pay close attention to. With, that being said, each character is well developed even the antagonist, Andrie Sator (Kenneth Branagh). My major pet peeve is when the quote on quote bad guy is just that ...a bad guy. Kenneth Branagh did a good job making me intrigued by the backstory of his character and trying to figure out his thinking. I also liked watching the scenes between his character and Kat (Elizabeth Debicki). You could always feel the tension between the two, and you believed whatever emotions they were acting out. It made you feel uncomfortable for Kat to be around Andrie, but that is the point. I think the arc that they gave Kat toward the end was great. I also loved the dynamic between Neil (Robert Patterson) and "The Protagonist" (John David Washington). They just clicked. You could see the blooming of friendship on-screen. I loved it. Now the action scenes in this movie are going to be talked about and analyzed for a long time. I think these scenes were what I enjoyed the most out of the whole movie. This movie changes the way you perceive and think about motion. The fights could be viewed in so many ways, and each would convey something totally different. And the cinematography. Not only was this a cool concept, but it was an aesthetically pleasing movie to look at. Every angle felt intentional, and it was so cool to see the way Christopher Nolan portrayed time going backwards on screen. Christopher Nolan's mind is beautiful. I think everyone should watch this movie sometime. If you like movies that have many layers and easter eggs, this is the movie for you. You won't stop thinking about this movie for days. Everything is connected; a never-ending loop. Expand

The fact of the matter is this film isn't for everyone. You have to be invested in the idea of inversion as a whole to truly understand this film. Not Emily from buzzfeed who's favorite movie is twilight. Is tenet complicated? Hell yes. Tenet is easily director Christopher Nolan's most complex film to date but it's also his most ambitious in that right. This is Christopher Nolan's take on a bond film and wow is it spectacular. Now to actually the review part of the movie. Tenet clearly shows that most of Christopher Nolan's work has led up to this film. You can see influences of Inception, Memento, and Dunkirk clearly present. That is not a critisism however due to it only elevating the film to be somewhat familiar but still a breathe of fresh air from the "rollercoaster films" we are used to seeing in 2020. The only critisism I have for tenet is the setting up for the story was not done as well as it could and became often a jumbled mess of connections to characters that you know nothing else about. The biggest strength of tenet is its last act however. The pacing is incredible and keeps you invested in the films finale. The ending didn't quite have the punch of Nolan's other films such as Interstellar but it still was a satisfying ending none the less. I do hope Nolan goes against his norms and makes a sequel for tenet however as out of all Nolan's films other than the dark knight this film cries for a sequel. In conclusion tenet isn't for the people looking for a simple film or people who have critisized Nolan's films in the past but if you do not fall under that category then Tenet is an engaging spy movie like none you have ever seen before and is among the director's best. Tenet is spectacular.... Expand

Hoo boy. I'm not sure how to review the latest Nolan brain-twister. Maybe in reverse? Well here goes...

The opening was thrilling - major vibes from the opening scene of "The Dark Knight." But it went sideways (or multiple-ways) from there.

I went in knowing this was mind-bending. That it would take multiple viewings to make sense of it. But it was beyond confusing. It was unintelligible.

At some point, I was so confused (watching things/people go backward through time while things/people go forward in time will do that to you), I pulled up a scene-by-scene recap on my phone. And even that didn't help.

Great acting: Check.

Awesome cinematography: Check.

Pulsating soundtrack: Check.

Do you ever watch a 2.5 hour James Bond movie and wonder "Where in the world are they now? Which massive death-defying air/sea/land chase are we watching now?"

That's essentially what this is ... a confusing epic Bond movie with a "reverse-time" brain teaser thrown in.

Expect to read/watch a recap or two afterwards) to try and make sense of it (trust me - it won't help).

Nolan has leaned into and doubled down on the most frustrating aspects of his recent work: unintelligible dialogue and plot that folds under the weight of of careful thought (the reason we're rushed through it in the first place). It's annoying that Nolan has branded himself as a crusader of a lost cinematic experience. His films are no longer designed to be appreciated in an initial viewing but are to be dissected with internet research and discussion and then re-viewed multiple times in home viewing to achieve resonance. This means he's not really a champion of cinema at all, he's just created a pretentious Third Way in which the first step of this multi-media, meta method of seeing a movie takes place with the investment of time and money that go into showing up to see a movie at a theater. Why anybody would expect others to make this investment, knowing that moviegoers will be denied a complete and satisfying experience, is anybody's guess. Expand

I risked COVID for you and Christopher Nolan's Tenet. It was nice to be back in a theater with a huge screen and a comfy recliner for the communal experience. We were socially distanced, a light crowd, masked up and sanitized as best as possible. While the theater-going experience went as well as can be expected in these times, I doubt that I'll take another chance like that in a while. On that note, was Tenet worth the risk - keep reading for my thoughts.

There has been so much hype about Tenet. It is supposed to be the first mega-blockbuster post-COVID-19 to hit the movie theaters. It's supposed to be outsized, action-y and the kind of spectacle that can only truly be appreciated on the big screen. Christopher Nolan has the clout based on The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and even prestige pics like The Prestige and Dunkirk. There's an up-and-coming cast including Blackkklansman star, John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki, who was great in Widows, Golden Globe winner, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and everyone's favorite vampire, Robert Pattinson. All of the elements are there for what should prove to be a top notch night at the movies.

So, I am not going to give a synopsis of the plot because 1.) I don't want to spoil anything and 2.) I didn't understand what was going on. There is literally a line early in the film from a character played by Clemence Poesy (her only scene) where she's explaining the crux of the conceit of the movie to John David Washington's character and she says, "Don't try to understand it." What?!?!? Which basically means that if you get lost in the plot of this movie, just give up and go with it. I couldn't exactly do that because the script gets bogged down with still trying to explain and explain and explain the how and what of what is going on. It gets boring and frustrating at times. Even some of the acting is bad because of the stilted, overly explain-y dialogue.

On a side note: complicated movies are fine. In fact, Christopher Nolan has written and directed some excellent complicated movies. Inception and Memento are great examples. What those films did very well that Tenet fails to do is make a complex concept simple to understand in their cinematic universes. Nolan didn't make that happen here.

In the plus column for Tenet, the film will be one of the most stylish movies you'll see this year. The action sequences add just that jolt of energy this exposition-heavy film needs. Where big spectacle is needed, the film delivers. While there is a moment where the film reveals itself, it is still completely inscrutable even if it is exciting; so, you can enjoy it on a pure action, conceptual level but forget trying to find any deeper understanding from the film itself.

The ambition of Tenet is admirable. The craft of the work is top notch. The script is a confusing, stilted dud, which makes the actors struggle and no real connection is able to be made to any characters. Is Tenet worth seeing in a theater? If you see Tenet, you have to see it twice or maybe more times. In a pre-COVID-19 world, I'd say the spectacle alone is worth a ticket to the theater with a big box of popcorn. BUT in these pandemic times of September 2020, it is more worth shelling out some VOD money, split amongst a group of you friends, when Tenet is available on streaming, so you can pause and rewind to understand what it's all about. Then, come to the comments and explain it to me, please! And then pass that handful of popcorn, please.

Nolan's ideas were always special, same for Tenet. He also manages to keep the heartbeat high and stable all through the film. But we can't find what destination the film want's us to reach.
We simply can't catch up the plot, and trust me, not in a fun way. Even though the idea's brand new, the scientific theory is overwhelmed with lack of structure.
The characterization is incomplete and the audience doesn't get to know the protagonist as much as it should.
I have to admit too much car action doesn't quite fit the film.
Apart from all I said, Christopher Nolan's perfect and unique style, is becoming quite a cliché after a decade from Inception.
However, Tenet is a movie worth at least watching once, but isn't what we expected from Nolan.

The climax battle in the final 30 minutes doesnt quite deliver, and sometimes the forward/backward things just look plain silly.
But a welcome blockbuster, go see it and support the cinemas, they need it !

The dialogue in Tenet is much like the positive reviews for the movie; So desperate to offer insight, and meaning, that they go on for twice as long as they should, only to find they have still said nothing worth hearing.
Unfortunately, Tenet is mostly empty dialogue, from start to finish. There's a small, interesting idea here. 'Your perspective on time is just one, of many, here, let Nolan show you more.'
It's not unlike, 'what if people could enter and alter your dream? Let Nolan show you more.'
The major difference, here, between Tenet and Inception, is that Inception was a finished script, doubtlessly re-written many times, to ensure it's both legible and fun, all the way through. Tenet has not had even a first of second pass. It has not had a good writer come along and say "Hey, Chris, why are you telling instead of showing. This is boring. Let's start again, without all the exposition that goes nowhere and try and craft a more interesting story around your central concept."
The entire movie feels like Nolan is stuck, writing page, after page, after page of exposition, to try and explain the story to an editor or producer, but they just got so bored, they turned around and said **** it, yeah, sounds great, Chris, do that, I trust you."
The result is massively bad.
Beyond bad, in fact, as it's the first unwatchable film Chris Nolan has made, which makes it disappointing, too. We can only blame ourselves. We thought he was incapable of making a bad movie, just as the studio clearly did, when they let him go ahead with such a poor screenplay.
The truth, of course, is never that complicated.
Sometimes people waffle and don't produce anything worth hearing, no matter who they are.

Disclaimer: It gets better with a second viewing.

My initial reaction to Tenet was to give it a 7/10, but on a second viewing I bumped it up to an 8/10. It's not Nolan's best work, but it's not his worst either - I'd rank it as probably his 6th best.

The visuals are amazing and the action is the best Nolan has ever directed. The music fits the scenes well and although not Hans Zimmer is still compelling and powerful. The idea behind the film is - as usual with Nolan - very intriguing and original. But why I refrain from giving this a perfect rating (keep in mind an 8/10 is quite good) is this is not his best written film. The exposition for the first hour or so of the film is rough. It's not entirely clear why what's happening is happening and I wish either it had been cut from the film and streamlined or had been given extra time to fully develop (which was unlikely to happen as convincing a studio to go longer than 2 1/2 hours is nearly impossible, even for Nolan) The characters are also not fleshed out well and the acting is only mediocre, although Kenneth Branagh stands out as the best.

Altogether, a very entertaining film. Imaginative, expansive, and uniquely Nolan. But for a director of such magnitude and reputation, it may disappoint some viewers. 8/10 is hardly a bad film and is in fact a very, very good one. But when perfection is expected, very good can be a letdown sometimes. Is that our fault for having such high expectations? Or Nolan's for having raised the bar so high in the past? Regardless, the second viewing is a superior experience for both understanding the plot and for having reset expectations.

Tenet is a movie that made me buy a movie ticket.
In times of endlessly rehashed movie concepts, live action remakes (what even is the point of that?), the milking of brands to their breaking point, this movie is a breath of fresh air. It combines the concept of inverting objects or even yourself with gorgeous action scenes, the fact that almost none of the characters have actual names didn't even occur to me when the credits rolled. It's not as good as other movies by Christopher Nolan, like Interstellar (my favourite movie of all time), or Inception, but in modern mainstream cinema it's something fresh, I really recommend you to go to the cinema to watch it.
(Also you should watch the video Exurb1a made about it)

It's long, well filmed and cast and technically very interesting. Definitely something you've never seen before. Watch it knowing nothing and then watch it again to try and figure things out. Can't wait to get a copy and run parts of it backwards.

Great movie, visuals are fantastic, the sound is amazing. If you dont like the sound in this movie, you either saw it at a terrible cinema or downloaded some crappy copy. Great acting by the bunch, Pattisons best in my eyes.

The plot is complex for sure, a bit hard than both Inception and Interstellar but I like that Nolan keep experimenting with time.

I won't know if its great until I watch it with subtitles. I could only understand 20% of the words in this movie because they were all so muffled. And I read Noland does this in purpose! It looked really cool and special and it it conveyed the idea of a really cool film so I'll give it 8 circles. My phone won't let me see words typing so if it's a mess that's why. Expand

Far and away Nolan's most complicated film to date, "Tenet's" plot initially unfurls in a manner you'd expect from a typical Nolan film. Don't even think about sleeping on the second half, though, for when the reversals, twists and complications start coming into play, you'll find your own consciousness moving forwards, backwards, longways and sideways through time in order to catch up with all the ways the rules can change in this thing. Big, bold and begging for repeat viewings, "Tenet" ultimately doesn't rank that high on my all-time list of favorites from the filmmaker in question, but when one is dealing with oeuvre of someone like Christopher Nolan, I guess a statement like that doesn't hold nearly as much weight as it usually does. Indeed, "Tenet" is still great in most of the ways that count. Expand

All the practical effects here are amazing. Especially the plane sequence and the war sequence. I’m genuinely impressed and curious about how he was able to do some of this stuff since the movie deals with time inversion. There’s a lot of stuff going forwards and backwards in a scene and I really want to know how Nolan did it. The cinematography is fantastic as always and the score is great. Hans Zimmer is missed here but I think Ludwig Göransson did an excellent job doing his own thing while also throwing in elements of Zimmer in there too. The editing can feel a little bit awkward at points but it’s good for the most part and the sound editing is great. The only issue in the technical category I have is the sound mixing. Unfortunately, Nolan decides to turn the mixing up a little too loud during important scenes and it can be hard to hear what some of the actors are saying. Speaking of actors, almost everyone here does a great job with John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Elizabeth Debicki being standouts. There isn’t a lot of depth to their characters which can mute some of the emotional weight at points but it wasn’t a huge issue for me. The plot is unique and different but definitely is incredibly confusing and will most likely require rewatches to fully comprehend it. If you are a fan of Christopher Nolan or want to see something in theaters, I urge you to check this out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet was an extremely entertaining movie, with an absolutely incredible concept displayed masterfully in this movie. The execution is also brilliant, the editing, acting, soundtrack and script were all very well made and the whole plot has a lot of detail which some people will think is pretentious but others will love because it makes this movie even better on a rewatch. The characters are interesting, however at some point you could say there is a bit of a lack of personality. I can see where people are coming from when they say this but i mostly disagree. A common criticism i hear is that there isnt really any back story given for the characters. My counter argument is why should there be? I think that even though we dont know much about the characters and dont know their intentions behind their actions, it doesnt mean we cant root for them. We can see the "the protagonist" played by john david washington is the kind of person who cares a lot for other people from the beginning, and this is a perfectly plausable reason for him going back to save kat and for his determination in completing his mission. Overall tenet is by no means a perfect movie, (the sound mixing at some parts was quite poor) but it is a very unique one with a great concept and execution. Expand
