Tenet is Nolans clumsiest movie. But it is phänomenal. The zeitgeist is top. No masterpiece, but it is a movie, that brotkes our usually feeling for watching movies. It is provocative. An this needs the cinema.

Possibly the most fatuous film ever made. And it cost squillions. If you want to know why America is losing the plot see this movie.

Knowing how sadistic Nolan is I knew what I was getting myself into. it is only toward the end that everything makes sense even after the credit rolls.
I got an even more profound comprehension of the story in its whole and the impact of every action taken by the protagonist.. Watch it while it is in theaters to get the most of the experience. Definite orgasm for the brain.

You can tell this film was made by a master craftsman Director Christopher Nolan has made another master piece here. The music and the sound in this were a little over powering at times it does make the film very intense. The stand out performances for me were John David Washington and Kenneth Branagh whose performance in this is explosive and quite intimidating, his experience as an actor really shines through. Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki are also good in this. I think I would put this as my 3rd favourite Christopher Nolan movie after The Dark Knight and Interstellar although it might even pass Interstellar over time. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie has a cool and interesting concept, really fun to watch at the beginning, but the last hour of the movie is hard to track, it is not explained well and you can find yourself quite frequently in situations where you don't understand anything, and also the last battle where they have to army team, that is really bad scene because it is like 200 soldiers vs three bad guys, you just don't see bad guys in the final scenes, and it feels like they are just shooting in the air, all an all the movie have a cool concept but it was executed poorly. This review would contain spoilers if I had any clue what the hell was going on. So I'll keep this short and sweet. The music is so loud you can't hear the dialogue and every other person had an accent which doesn't help when you are fighting to hear the words. 45 minutes in I turned to my son and said I had no idea what is going on and he said he had no clue either. After another hour he said let's go bc he was clueless and I said let's just start for the action. Then the climax comes and I have no clue who is shooting at who, where they are why they are even there or what they are trying to accomplish. Then after the climax I don't even know what the hell they are splitting up, what it does or why. I left as they were trying to explain what had transpired and it didn't even matter. Zero starts and if rather stick a needle in my eye then even attempt to go online to figure it out. Water off money and 2 1/2 hours of my life. I'm dumber now and out $25. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The music video to Heinrich Maneuver or the reverse scene in Top Secret have better action, clearer exposition, and logical metaphysics. The good reviews conflate a sense of wonder at the spectacle of special effects and a plot that tries to mess with narrative flow (read: time travel) with being challenged intellectually by complex, clearly formulated philosophical problems. Tenet is riddled with incoherent plot jumps, mumbled overwrought dialogue, stupid explanations, and little real action besides a brief fight scene or blue and red tagged soldiers running around, shooting at poorly realized enemies. Tenet is truly an unmitigated mess. Worst big screen film ever. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. There are far better time travel films out there. Expand

These last few days since the reviews of this film began to circulate, there was something that stood out in many of the reviews from professional critics.
And that is that apparently because of the situation we're currently living in, Tenet became overnight the film that was going to save cinema.

That in my opinion added an unfair burden on the film and unfortunately became a dark cloud that now hangs over it.

Now if in addition to that, we add the weight that the name of Christopher Nolan involves, it goes without saying that Tenet raised expectations that it was going to be unable to satisfy, unless it was an epic masterpiece and Tenet is far from that.

It's funny that after such a huge film as Interstellar, Nolan decided to go to smaller scale with Dunkirk, which was clearly his most sober film since The Prestige, but now going back to present a huge show, I feel that Nolan, perhaps, for the first time in his career, exceeded his ambitions.

Tenet by its very nature is a complicated film. It's not a film that will break your head as a lot of the press has led the public to believe, but it is a complicated film.
But more than anything it feels like a film that gets complicated gratuitously.

I must explain clearly that this is due to its own concept, and the concept is great but what in Inception felt organic, even though it was complex, here it feels like an introduction that never succeeds.
And it's that when you need to explain so much, the emotion that gets paused, it also gets diluted.

And on the action side, I can't deny that Nolan knows his business. You only need to see the scene with which the film opens, because is simply spectacular.
In that aspect I cannot complain and that action it's one of the reasons why this film grows.

Tenet is perhaps the best mainstream film to come out this year, yes I know, we don't have many film in that regard but I mention this because that doesn't make it special in any way.

The problems, from the excessive duration, to the cartoon villain, undermine many of its aptitudes and is that ultimately, the key problem with Tenet is not that it's not going to meet the expectations of the audience, but is that cannot live up to its own concept.
I mean, even Hans Zimmer's absence is notable.

Christopher Nolan delivers an entertaining huge and ambitious film that is also, distant, cold, pretentious and self-indulgent.

His fans will defend him tooth and nail and his detractors will hate it without hesitation, but the last word will be entirely yours.

I enjoyed it but I wasn't impressed. But understand that at no point, not even with the insistence of Nolan and the studio to release it in theaters, that Tenet wasn't going, nor did it have to save the movie theater experience.
That's up to us, the moviegoers.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, wanted to love this movie. Loved Inception, and liked Interstellar. I love SciFi, and time bending, mind bending movies. However, this movie was a waste of time. Hard to understand accents and confusing dialog. Didn't really care about the characters or plot. Sound was horrible, dialog hard to distinguish with background noise and music. Sound mix had music way too loud. Really was ready to walk out after about 45 minutes, but kept hoping it would get better. Maybe because of overdone sound and effects, parts of it seemed a little like a cheap Japanese kung foo or godzilla movie. Final battle scene seemed to have an army throwing bombs and shooting at a non-existent enemy. They are attacking a shutdown defunct nuclear power plant. They never show the supposed enemy. Plus, one army is attacking in normal time, while troops from the same army attack in reverse time, sucking up bullets and unexploding buildings. None of this is ever very well explained. I'm so disappointed based on Christopher Nolan's previous work, this just doesn't cut it. Sorry, but what a waste of $200 million dollars. At the very least, wait for the DVD to come out. Absolutely not worth paying theater prices. It's 2 1/2 hours of your life, that you'll never get back. :((
P.S. Love sciFi, The Matrix, Source Code, Adjustment Bureau, Inception, Passengers, and many others, but this just ranks so far below any of these.

The first time, I liked it, but didn't love it because as others have said, the dialogue is difficult to understand. I saw it a second time however, and after digesting some of what I saw the first time, the movie made much more sense and I could appreciate much more of the experience. Now, I love the movie. It was an "experience" and I'm still thinking about it days later, listening to the soundtrack, doing web searches about some of the concepts and... well you get the idea. Every scene is crafted. Every sound effect is considered. It is a great movie going experience. Don't listen to the criticisms (which are perfectly valid by the way) but this is not a "zero" score as some users have rated it. It isn't a "5 or 6" either. This is movie magic and very good. If you don't "get it" and can't understand all of the dialogue (and that is understandable) just go with the action and sound, and then get it on Blu-ray later with subtitles and watch it a few more times (I know I will). This is one of those movies that will be entertaining on the 4th and 5th viewings. I just can't understand the hate by some - but to each their own. I really love the sci-fi trappings and over the top concepts. This is great stuff. Expand

About halfway into the movie I realize that II went to this movie with my friends a few days after the premiere, and was shocked to find nobody else in the theater. If only I knew why, I probably would've saved a couple bucks and my time. About halfway into the movie I realize that I literally have no idea what is going on. I turn to my friends, and it seems that they are completely lost as well. We ended up walking out about halfway through the movie. This feels like one of those pretentious artsy movie people make when they realize they could sell people anything. With enough big names, people will watch anything and pretend it's a masterpiece. I feel like most of the high ratings come from people being told that this is a good movie, and that they are complete idiots if they don't understand it. I give it one point for being very easy to make fun of with my friends, as well as one point for reverse car, the only enjoyable thing in the actual movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is a pretentious, exposition heavy mess, it throws around terms like plutonium and algorithm just to seem complicated, but it's quite simple and unoriginal, John David Washington is a great actor and exudes charisma, but his character and the entire cast are undercooked in typical Nolan fashion, the female lead is a tired, boring caricature, and even the actress's performance cannot salvage the role, another underwhelming Nolan flick, though not as bad as the inception Expand

Great movie, visuals are fantastic, the sound is amazing. If you dont like the sound in this movie, you either saw it at a terrible cinema or downloaded some crappy copy. Great acting by the bunch, Pattisons best in my eyes.

The plot is complex for sure, a bit hard than both Inception and Interstellar but I like that Nolan keep experimenting with time.

And yet.... An AMAZING accomplishment. Somehow Christopher Nolan makes almost every scene not only engaging, but compelling.

Rather than passive wonder, you're somehow caught up in the action; all the fear triggers are pulled, even though your "higher" brain is completely lost. Which somehow makes it even scarier.

It is the most wondrously engaging (or engagingly wondrous) film I've seen (I'm 55). Nolan stands alone, and this is his most intense. Okay, tamp your expectations down, so that they can be properly exceeded. This is a film that needs to be seen on a large, large screen with loud sound. See this in a theater, see it often.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet was an extremely entertaining movie, with an absolutely incredible concept displayed masterfully in this movie. The execution is also brilliant, the editing, acting, soundtrack and script were all very well made and the whole plot has a lot of detail which some people will think is pretentious but others will love because it makes this movie even better on a rewatch. The characters are interesting, however at some point you could say there is a bit of a lack of personality. I can see where people are coming from when they say this but i mostly disagree. A common criticism i hear is that there isnt really any back story given for the characters. My counter argument is why should there be? I think that even though we dont know much about the characters and dont know their intentions behind their actions, it doesnt mean we cant root for them. We can see the "the protagonist" played by john david washington is the kind of person who cares a lot for other people from the beginning, and this is a perfectly plausable reason for him going back to save kat and for his determination in completing his mission. Overall tenet is by no means a perfect movie, (the sound mixing at some parts was quite poor) but it is a very unique one with a great concept and execution. Expand

Right off the bat you are plunged into a scene where all kinds of confusing things happen, the dialogue is hidden behind the loud sound effects and soundtrack. And when they did speak, they muffled and mumbled their lines. I found the action sequences good, but that's all I'm afraid. I'm sure there is more depth to this film but not for me, I was frustrated at not being able to follow what the hell they were saying, and when they did speak clearly, it just didn't seem realistic in the setting. Besides that, there are so many things to try and understand, it just messes with your head. Don't waste your money, wait for the film on Netflix and watch it with subtitles, the cinematic experience ruins the dialogue. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very much a Nolan film. Spent the extra money and saw in in IMAX. Beautifully filmed - as is expected with any Nolan picture, and well acted. The story for me was actually somewhat predictable (not too difficult once you watch a bunch of his films and get into the groove of his style). Not that that is bad; if you liked Inception and Intersteller, chances are you'll like this too.

So why the low grade of only a 6? If I was WB and gave up 205 million for this to be made, and then screened the film and noticed that literally half the dialog was muddled to obscurity, I'd demand he either remix it, or return some money. I had the same complaint with Interstellar (although only in certain parts of the film when the droning sound overloaded any intelligent levels for dialog comprehension). It wasn't the physical theaters fault (Interstellar was at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, and everyone around me had the same reaction). It's as if it's almost a tactic; "maybe if people don't understand the dialog they will see it multiple times so they can finally get it". I've seriously heard better dialog audio in student films. I would be embarrassed to put my name on this film if I were on the sound mixing team.

So there you have it. Without good audio, it doesn't matter how many millions you spend on something.

Finally, last point is, the character development was two-dimensional and flat. I actually cared more about Branagh's character than all the others (and he's the villain). The female lead came off very one-note as a "generic mother role". Her response to "the world (could) end..." is "oh, my son!". Really? Anyway, it was a ride indeed, and not the worst film out there, but the film never lived up to the extended trailer that I saw what seems like an eternity ago.

(((This is probably the dumbest movie I seen in a long time!))) I actually like some of Nolan's movies, but this one is terrible. This movies premise is fine, and under the right direction would have been as good as Inception. However, Nolan(((This is probably the dumbest movie I seen in a long time!))) I actually like some of Nolan's movies, but this one is terrible. This movies premise is fine, and under the right direction would have been as good as Inception. However, Nolan directed this movie like he was on Speed! That's a fact. A lot of fast pass incoherent scenes I will definitely have to see again just to understand that the movie really is incoherent not me. Whew!!! And I thought I was on a bad trip, nope its just Nolan. What I liked: 1. Hard concepts being thrown at the audience like they know what's going on. Call me a snob but I am up for a challenge. I don't appreciate easy dumbed down material. Besides we are in an internet age, people should be willing to look these things up. Its not like it wouldn't take more than ten seconds. Just saying! 2. It is a well acted movie despite the dumb dialog, and objectional ways characters plod on with minute character development. What I don't like: 1. Over the top convoluted plot with many working parts, but no payoff. I think if the action, events and storyline was simplified we would have had a better understanding of what was going on. To go here and there for a McGuffin was rather stupid, or to chase McGuffin to meet a character did not work for me. Seems like busy work. 2. Characters appear cold because we don't know them or care for them. The only character that seemed fleshed out was the billionaires wife (I don't remember her name proven my point). If Nolan did the same for others it would have been more tolerable a movie. Nolan does not give his main character a name, but a title. Not a good idea, its smug! 3. Motivations and plot holes that make no sense. There is a lot of them and makes this movie seem messy and chaotic. There is a scene where I don't understand why character are at this place that they are suppose to be. It's just writing into story so characters can have temporal encounters and have a cool looking scene. Its like the editor needed to cut the scene but kept it in movie. 4. Fowards/ backwards running, walking, or battling was cringe! In other words it like rewinding a movie while having other characters fight the tide. Stupid! The the whole movie is this. Here is my solution one group stays in current universe, one goes into another past universe only during temporal disturbances do they see each other, interact, or objects get moved or disappear. Yeah, it would have been a lot of ghosting going on, but it would have been fun. I think Interstellar had scenes like that, and did the storyline collapse, no! 6. Exposition men! Nolan does this alot! Characters that are there to explain stories are lame. But characters that are there to explain concepts and story at warp speed, are....still lame. Imagine someone came off the street and explained Einstein's Theory of relativity in two minutes then expected you to write a paper on it. That is the way this movie feels. And no, I do understand this movie, that's the problem 6. The dialog is unrealistic, no one talks like they do, there is a lot of cliché dialog, might I add some of it was very cringe for an cerebral movie like this. It takes you out of the movie. 7. This movie is very task oriented so much so it brings to mind Olympic relay racing one runner passes off the torch to the next and so on. There is Mcguffin finding, finding people to do the next task, and convincing people to let the main characters tag along. So minor character get introduced to only to run the race. And most of the dialog is around that. Again not really a movie more like Iron Man or a trilithon. I am sure that Cristopher Nolan had a masterpiece in his head but he got caught up in the complex churning monster that is this plot. I would probably recommend renting this movie. Expand

Far and away Nolan's most complicated film to date, "Tenet's" plot initially unfurls in a manner you'd expect from a typical Nolan film. Don't even think about sleeping on the second half, though, for when the reversals, twists and complications start coming into play, you'll find your own consciousness moving forwards, backwards, longways and sideways through time in order to catch up with all the ways the rules can change in this thing. Big, bold and begging for repeat viewings, "Tenet" ultimately doesn't rank that high on my all-time list of favorites from the filmmaker in question, but when one is dealing with oeuvre of someone like Christopher Nolan, I guess a statement like that doesn't hold nearly as much weight as it usually does. Indeed, "Tenet" is still great in most of the ways that count. Expand

While the action sequences andDirector Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster -- the film on which the movie industry has pegged its hopes for drawing viewers back into theaters -- unfortunately fails spectacularly in its appointed mission. While the action sequences and some of the special effects make for terrific eye candy, the ridiculously convoluted plot is so hard to follow that one really needs pause and rewind buttons to absorb it all. What's more, the picture's look and feel seem like they could have been taken out of an "Inception" sequel but without a comparable emotional connection. Kenneth Branagh's fine supporting performance adds some spark and life to this offering, somewhat helping to make up for the deadpan and uncharacteristically disappointing portrayal by John David Washington. Clearly this is a film enamored with its own cleverness and gimmickry, but such qualities -- no matter how expert they might be -- can never compensate for the lack of a good narrative, something desperately missing from this overlong, underwhelming effort. About the only truly positive thing I can say about "Tenet" is that it looks good on a big screen, something viewers who really want to see it should do while it's still in theaters. (Oh, and by the way, I saw this one in a movie theater -- and lived to tell about it. Get over those fears already, folks.) Expand

While I like the general concept, it doesn't work for me. You could make a movie that's hard to follow along - if the pictures are nice, it can work. Or you could make a movie with poor cinematography and a great story - but in my opinion this film has neither of those. It is hard to follow, full of tropes. Military, machine gun, special agent, helicopter, yacht, beautiful woman, guy doing chin ups near the oilrig (that's a new one I guess) plutonium, end of tze world, nuvlear thread - no, just no. We've seen these ingredients too many times, they're boring as hell. A movie has to be satisfying because you care about the characters, you can follow the story, you are curious about how it ends - this film doesn't check any of these boxes. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The thing about Tenet is if you’re obsessive about understanding it, you’re not going to have a good time. Tenet is a good time. It’s an exhilarating watch full of masterly crafted action sequences and beautiful bouts of cinematography. The characters are great and entertaining— except for the women characters, but what more can we expect from Nolan— and the acting is stellar. However, it doesn’t make sense. It constantly just doesn’t make sense. The sound mixing in some places makes the dialogue impossible to hear or understand. However, you must get this principal fact: the only way to build suspense in your audience when you’re making a time travel movie where the events you see unfold you’ve already seen happen is to completely and utterly confuse your audience. And Tenet does that! I do not enjoy it, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the movie. Ray Bradbury basically revolutionized the science fiction genre by saying that realism isn’t a prerequisite for good science fiction. Before that, everyone wanted to know how fantastical futuristic machines would work down to the exact descriptions of everything and anything. Literally, before Ray Bradbury came into the scene half of science fiction wasn’t even fiction— there was no story. It was mostly just people describing cool things that could be a thing in the future. You have to suspend your disbelief to enjoy the movie. It’s like when you go to a magic show— you know its not real, but it doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. Tenet does make sense enough for you to be amazed by the twists and turns of the plot unfolding as you’ve seen it fold before, but enough to be dissatisfying to critics. Nolan does a great job at making a horribly confusing and out there concept— like time travel, and this theory that has been thought of in quantum mechanics for a while— as real as you can. But there’s just a principal problem in all time travel stories is that they’re walking paradoxes. If you think too hard, your brain will start to hurt. It’s one of those movies that you have to watch a video on afterwards to understand. But it doesn’t make it less enjoyable— take Primer for example, a science fiction movie about time travel that is regarded as possibly the best time travel plot of all time. This is Primer but if Primer had a Hollywood budget and wasn’t a Sundance film. Like a character says at the beginning of the movie, “don’t try to understand it”. You shouldn’t understand it. You should enjoy it! That’s what movies are there to do. Finally, Robert Pattinson is in it, so you know it’s going to be a great movie nonetheless. Did I mention some stellar acting? Because its there. I wish Nolan knew how to write female characters, though. The only girl in the entire movie is a damsel in distress type with the biggest “I’ll do anything for my children” cliche in the entire movie. Yet, it still fits into the movie thematically— one of the biggest pulls of the movie that show up time and time again is the individual vs the group. What’s one person’s life if you want to save the world? This movie does a wonderful job at exploring that, especially with Neil and the Protagonists relationship. Man, C. Nolan can’t write women, but where he can’t write woman unintentionally gay subtext always follows. Every scene in this movie is entertaining, and a deliriously confusing ride. It’s not on the same level as The Dark Knight or Memento, but that in no way shape or form makes it a bad movie. It’s kind of on the same level as Interstellar or Inception in my eyes. I went into the movie hyped, and left the movie hyped. I wasn’t disappointed, but it didn’t exceed my expectations either. But my expectations were high, and they were definitely fulfilled. I wanted good things and I got them. This is just all to say that Tenet is a good enjoyable film but not without its faults that comes with Nolan’s filmmaking time and time again. I recommend you watch it! Expand

While first watching the movie, things did not entirely make sense until later when things started to come together. I held out hope that things would be explained and was more than satisfied by the plot. The only drawback is the length of the movie.

Great movie with main attention on visual part. Nolan is genious (again, yes), the concept of inversion time is complex to understand, but I saw a correlation with a concept and idea of what is time in the "Dark" serial and a determenism. It's about a secret agent who embarks on a dangerous, time-bending mission to prevent the start of World War III. This movie .......I don't know how to describe how I feel about it. I watched it yesterday and being honest I feel like I have a better understanding of the movie now than while I was watching it in time. And that's not a bad thing! Most of Christopher Nolan's films make me feel this way. This movie is very complex in a good way. There are so many layers and seeing them all unfold and intertwine during the movie was really interesting. I love the complexity of the characters too. Each new face you see on the screen, you pay close attention to. With, that being said, each character is well developed even the antagonist, Andrie Sator (Kenneth Branagh). My major pet peeve is when the quote on quote bad guy is just that ...a bad guy. Kenneth Branagh did a good job making me intrigued by the backstory of his character and trying to figure out his thinking. I also liked watching the scenes between his character and Kat (Elizabeth Debicki). You could always feel the tension between the two, and you believed whatever emotions they were acting out. It made you feel uncomfortable for Kat to be around Andrie, but that is the point. I think the arc that they gave Kat toward the end was great. I also loved the dynamic between Neil (Robert Patterson) and "The Protagonist" (John David Washington). They just clicked. You could see the blooming of friendship on-screen. I loved it. Now the action scenes in this movie are going to be talked about and analyzed for a long time. I think these scenes were what I enjoyed the most out of the whole movie. This movie changes the way you perceive and think about motion. The fights could be viewed in so many ways, and each would convey something totally different. And the cinematography. Not only was this a cool concept, but it was an aesthetically pleasing movie to look at. Every angle felt intentional, and it was so cool to see the way Christopher Nolan portrayed time going backwards on screen. Christopher Nolan's mind is beautiful. I think everyone should watch this movie sometime. If you like movies that have many layers and easter eggs, this is the movie for you. You won't stop thinking about this movie for days. Everything is connected; a never-ending loop. Expand

Oh what rubbish. I'm a fan of most of Nolan's work (Dunkirk is a masterpiece) but this I found to be an unsatisfying and cold movie. Firstly the pacing was all wrong with no establishment work done on the different locations, just a frenetic rush from one set-piece to another after the laboured exposition hour is out of the way! The set pieces themselves, aside from the opening one were the opposite of immersive, the biggest fault I found with the movie. They should deepen the magic of the cinema transfix-ion experience, not break the spell. The inversion gimmick felt derivative and just not as good as Nolan thinks it is - certainly not enough to hang the whole movie off of. It's a high-concept fail in this case unfortunately. Three out of Ten-et. I fear that Nolan may have peaked and is in decline. It's really about time that he called time on the theme of time, at this time. Expand
