Though at times overly convoluted, Tenet is a confident showcase for writer-director Christopher Nolan’s ability to present amazing action scenes amid stunning cinematography.

It feels like he felt under pressure for exceeding the mind changing movies he made before and has taken it too far. Just to much.. way to much. The basic idea isn't to bad but it was rather an pitynlgy head shaking than an incredulously fascinated one.
No bond with the characters arises, they act not traceable and the dialogues were also bad. Also the music is way better in his other movies. Only positive point I can find here is for the image-rich action scenes, but thats not enough in 2020. Too bad, I was very hyped.

...and me who thought Inception and Interstellar were Nolan's worst...
This is definitely worst that any of his previous films and a terrible movie overall.
Some say it tries too hard and fails. I say it does't even try ... The entire concept is incoherent, childish and even poorly executed. Even if it made some sense (WHICH IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT), the very fact that people claim that you need to watch it several times to get it ... is proof enough of bad storytelling.
Memento, The Prestige and Dunkirk are his only movies worth spending a dime on (...and the Dark knight to some extent...)

Some people say that there is no emotional significance, but is say no. Sators men murdered his hole team that he worked with for long time, i think. i the end he is saving the world, besides revenging his team, because he works for CIA, he defends people so world means something to him. But other things are great. Graphics are masterpiece just like cinematography, concept is hard to understand, but you will get it. I really like this movie and their concept of time is really creative. For me it is 9/10. Expand

It kept me watching but... and it is a big but. You must turn on Closed Captioning to understand the constant explanations throughout the movie. The actors "mumble" (for dramatic effect). You must turn on CC right from the beginning or you will become lost very quickly. The lighting decisions do not work (for dramatic effect). Often I could not see the protagonist's expressions (nor read his lips) as he was moving or in the shadows. An extremely flawed movie that might be really good the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time watching but not the 1st time. This movie was made specifically for the movie theatre where you can focus. Though it is probably one of Nolan’s most polarizing film. I was especially Flabbergasted by the visual editing (not CGI) and the cinematography. The music composed by Ludwig Göransson was immensely appealing and unique. The way he implemented new musical ideas such as reverse music was spectacular. The plot, especially the ending (which most people cannot understand) was beautiful. So beautiful that it’s really difficult to understand. This is a very complex film indeed. But complex storylines can prove to be immensely beautiful. Once understood, one will remain aghast with beautiful story Nolan has built upon. Some emotions are very open, like Katherine’s love for her son and the hatred with Sator (one must remain aware of the fact that human emotions are not always good. Exploring the evil side of human emotions is also important and impactful). Meanwhile some emotions are very difficult to recognize, like the friendship of The Protagonist and Neil. The few impactful twists and the marvelous world that Nolan has created just like Inception is remarkable and can be cherished upon for long. There were some imperfections which prevent it to be Nolan’s best work. The story was a bit fast paced in the first half of the film. Also, the sound mixing proved it to be difficult for people to listen to the dialogues, which can easily be solved by subtitles (duh!). But all in all it was a phenomenal piece of filmography. It is a modern masterpiece which would take time for people to understand the depth of. One thing is for sure, watch it twice and then make an opinion. Expand

Bold, brilliant, amazing, complex.

Probably the most unique and mindblowing action movie ever made.

Tenet ranks among the very best of Nolan's work.

I had low expectations after Dunkirk, a movie that had very little going on, without the inventiveness and complexity of Nolan's best movies.

Tenet blew me away. I wonder if the 7.2 user score and 69 critic score is just because some people hate complexity. I loved it. And I loved that Tenet requires multiple viewings to figure out all of what's going on.

I am very impressed by Tenet and consider it to be one of the most unique and intelligent Hollywood movies I've seen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The action sequences are incredible, no doubt. Robert Pattinson is proved to be a phenomenon. However, the plot is not acceptable. First and foremost, if it's happening in the future, why on earth nothing is high-tech? Secondly, Inception was about a guy's dream, Interstellar was about the galaxy, and NASA stuff, a father and a daughter. Memento was about a guy's short memory. spoiler alert! Tenet, on the other hand, is about the entire world which is gonna be screwed. And there is this woman, Kat, who is only worried about her son and jeopardizes a worldwide mission based on her selfish emotion! Things can be inverted in time! OK! But the movie is about a woman being blackmailed by her husband and told to be free if avoids seeing her son. SHE CANNOT. All I am trying to say is that if we are supposed to see some fast-paced action sci-fi about world war 3 or a drama about a mother, her insane chosen husband, and her schoolboy? No way I can't ignore the weaknesses of a movie about the entire world's destiny. By the way, what's wrong with casting? the only actor I loved was Robert Pattinson who showed that even without any outrageous character, his performance keeps us watching. Neither could I identify with the protagonist, hope for his best, have his best interest in my heart, nor with the villain, nor with the contemporary fellows, nor the future, nor Kat. if every single of them perished, fine by me. Nolan made a mistake about timing. not in the movie but in reality. we wouldn't be scared if people from the future came to end our world. 2020? let them ruin the entire world. The movie is somewhere between 7 and 8 because of the notion, sexy visuals, music but somewhere between 5 and 6 due to Kat's stupidity and motivation, John David Washington's not being a good choice for leading actor, the plot holes, and some useless roles. Great performances from the cast helped with immersion even as the craziness of it all sometimes made me take a step back as I tried to figure things out. An exaggerated film whose only purpose is to complicate the viewer, but I wish he could do it with cinema. These ambiguities are created only by the chaotic and crowded montage and a series of theoretical dialogues, and no cinema is seen in it. Also, we do not see any coherent story during the film and the events of the film do not form a script at all. There is no characterization in the film, the protagonist character is not made at all and is not believable, also the other characters are completely caricatured and extra, also during the film and its artificial communication, not a bit of feeling is created. Aside from the fact that the film does not even come close to form, it is also very beginner in terms of technique, excessive cuts, and sometimes weird and inappropriate! The opening and closing sequences of the film are highly artificial, and the final sequence is saturated with a large number of cuts, aerial shots and rudimentary special effects. The only slight positive aspect of the film is its acting, and the acting of the antagonist character is defensible. In general, the film is considered to be a very bad and weak film, which is like a puzzle without a pattern, meaning that after putting the white pieces together, which is not a difficult task, it has nothing to offer. However it was said by the actor and director of the movie himself, Tom Wiseau, that the movie was intended to be black humor, hinting that the awkward dialogues and bad acting were put there deliberately to create confusion and was not meant to be taken seriously.

TENET felt like such a movie. But what worries me the most is that TENET was probably in fact a serious attempt at being a pretentious movie. The plot and dialogue were absolute nonsensical that it slowly became comedic, were it not that Nolan intentions probably was to make an intelligent movie, however done it so that it was deceiving and played games with the audience perception, but underestimated the intellect of the audience, meaning you cannot cover up nonsensical plotlines with confusing dialogues. Now I am all for absurd dialogues in the style of maybe like Quentin Tarantino's movies, but it needs to be executed smartly, not randomly.

Therefore as a deliberate black comedy, I would have given this movie a 9, if it was intended that way, but I think not. So I give it 3 stars and this movie might end up in the list as one of the worst films ever made next to "The Room"....

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had high expectations for this movie, but it turned out to be a big disappointment. Nolan is a highly meticulous director/writer (my favourite in fact) paying attention to the smallest details. Hence I find the many plot holes and faults in the storyline inexplicable. A few to mention: Why would Kat tell her family secrets to a complete stranger after talking with him for less than 5minutes? Why would they risk the mission to please an emotionally unstable Kats desire for vengeance. Sator would have died anyways (They only had to make sure he doesn't die before the algorithm is secured) Why are all locks and security systems so easy to breach(Oslo freeport, Stalsk-12) After being tightly surrounded by three trucks, the Estonian guards in the convoy still don't realise they are going to get ambushed. Why did the blue team had to fail preventing the explosion in the end? Blue team should have been the plan B in case Protagonist and Ives fails securing the algorithm. Why did Ives break the protocol in the end(no-one who knows the location of the algorithm can stay alive)? If Protagonist was the one who founded Tenet in the future why did he instruct Ives to kill themselves after securing the algorithm. How could he be sure that Ives gonna break the protocol? If Ives did obey the protocol and killed Protagonist, Tenet wouldn't have been founded in the future. Finally the cast:
Kat was annoying, she got too much airtime without an important role. The protagonist was bland. Sator was alright. Ives, Priya, Crosby and Mahir were good but they had small roles.
Neil was carrying the movie in my opinion.

The early exposition dump from the female scientist sets the stage for secret factions, incoming disaster and the nature of how the inverse time works. The move drops time and time again clear info on the inverse nature of time and how it works. The exposition dumps from the Arms Dealer, the main Villain, the side kick and hardass bearded soldier is straight forward. Plus the literal action sequence show visually how the inverse of time all works. The literal movie trailer has massive spoilers in so I didn't go into this movie blind I expected it. The final sequence was cool, clever and with a tinge of sadness. Awh shucks I quite liked that character no spoilers. Expand

Nowadays, it's really rare to be witness of the original concept in the movies. I'm not sure if I'm dumb or it's just Nolan's way of thinking. Which is apperently on another level. Every aspect of filmography is done brilliantly. Action sequences keep the audience on edge and engaged. Maybe the absence of H. Zimmer will not be very pleasing. However almost every dialogue was all Greek to me If you know what I mean. I had no idea what is going on and why. Bottom line... it's my least favorite movie from Nolan's discography. Expand

Nolan has leaned into and doubled down on the most frustrating aspects of his recent work: unintelligible dialogue and plot that folds under the weight of of careful thought (the reason we're rushed through it in the first place). It's annoying that Nolan has branded himself as a crusader of a lost cinematic experience. His films are no longer designed to be appreciated in an initial viewing but are to be dissected with internet research and discussion and then re-viewed multiple times in home viewing to achieve resonance. This means he's not really a champion of cinema at all, he's just created a pretentious Third Way in which the first step of this multi-media, meta method of seeing a movie takes place with the investment of time and money that go into showing up to see a movie at a theater. Why anybody would expect others to make this investment, knowing that moviegoers will be denied a complete and satisfying experience, is anybody's guess. Expand

Instead you are most likely not understanding it because it is wrong or a mess of a script/edit. If time is reversed for you, then you exhale Oxygen and breath in Carbon Dixoxide. You do not need "special air". Also, driving a front wheel drive car backwards means you loose all the fine control as it is an actuated rear-wheel (front of car is pointing to the rear) drive vehicle. So weaving in and out of traffic would have you bouncing off cars half the time. Also a bullet fired in reverse does the same amount of damage, as it causes the same hole. Luckily most of the movie is spent in forwards, so it is somewhat enjoyable. Of course the whole thing breaks down when you ask why the bad guy did not know what was coming, considering he is getting messages from the future. Expand

It's pretty simple, just imagine a movie about typical "simply kind" protagonist without past or character development and "simply evil" antagonist which is almost hadn't a past too. Add to that let's say some nuclear threat from antagonist which wants to destroy the world. Sounds pretty pathetic and generic, right? But what if you add to that some ridiculous pretentious two-way time flow (which is meaningless at its conception from the start), worthless dialogues full of "it's from a past future" and phrases which making a high-schooler proud since he knows them. The whole conception of time here is about a way to film action scenes originally not for scenario itself. This movie is on par with World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles for example but simply added meaningless abundant time manipulation scenes. Overhyped simpletons will call such a movie a masterpiece for smart people but no one from them could explain anything from a movie which lacks scenario or sense at least. Groundhog day was better in terms of time manipulation. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 2 hours of exposition won’t save this movie from being so obviously “pretend smart”. Unlike interstellar, it throws around terms like “entropy”, “inversion” and “algorithm” in very nonsensical ways. The scientific definition of all these terms is much more interesting than what the movie does with them. For example, the “algorithm” is a 9 piece lego set invented by the future’s Oppenheimer (who since we are in 2020, must be female) who is only alluded to in one dialogue scene to establish her gender. That’s it, nothing else is built on her character. The villain is this fat, drunk, wife beating, eastern block oligarch (who knew we could still have stereotypes in 2020) who wants to end the world by assembling this lego set. Yes the plot is that stupid. However, up until the 1:30 hour mark the sheer charisma of the main character keeps you interested, however that falls apart exactly during the 1:45 mark when the main character starts fighting himself, one of them is masked so the other one doesn’t know he’s fighting himself, and THE VERSION WHO KNOWS IS FIGHTING HIMSELF STARTS SHOOTING AT HIMSELF. This is so damn stupid. Such a waste of potential. Expand

I found the whole exercise to be a tiresome, nonsensical slog. As a huge fan of science fiction film and literature, I'm always excited to see a new take on the genre. I'm not one of the science fiction fans who dislikes anything fantastical or not 'hard sci-fi', in fact, some of those are my favorites. This however, takes nonsense to the next level. Its certainly a unique concept, but the headiness it proports itself to have is a mirage. In reality, the story is just a vehicle for a gimmick with some cool visual tricks, and it doesn't have the requisite internal logic to suspend disbelief in the slightest. This adds up to an extremely frustrating experience, which makes sense only on the most surface of levels, and takes itself dreadfully serious. If you peel back that surface level only a bit, you find a menagerie of convoluted **** that makes no sense whatsoever. It's as if they tried to hide how nonsensical the entire concept was, by making it all extra convoluted.

There's a pointed line of dialogue aimed at audience members who realize it doesn't make a lick of sense, "Don't try to understand it. Feel it." Well, to me, this FELT like a half-baked and lazily contrived film which should have spent another few years being properly conceptualized in the writer's room.

It's an extremely boring and frustrating experience, and I expected more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet is a great film, but don’t get me wrong, it isn’t exactly the second coming of Christ. Some of the action is an art form (after watching I'm still watching the first 6 minutes just to see the sheer greatness of that theatre shooting) the time technology is fairly understandable but some of it still confuses me (if i didn’t drop it what makes me make it come up? And, if I throw it, could I make it fly back to me?) but it doesn’t distract from the plot too much. John David Washington [the protagonist] plays his role rather awesomely, and Robert Patterson (who is my second favorite character, [Neil])
gives fresh breath of air. Overall, great film. I consider a good spending of 2 1/5 hours.

It is actually a very straightforward James Bond style action movie, but instead of one-liners and sex scenes we have a half-boiled attempt to explain entropy and time-inversion. John David Washington is wonderful, even though his character is a blank slate. Robert Pattinson is great, even though he's mostly just a plot device. Kenneth Branagh chews the scenery as usual, and his 'russian' accent is inconsistent and silly. Elizabeth Debicki is great, it's too bad she was written as an empty shell who only speaks in relation to her husband and son. The music is well done, if a little heavy handed especially when attempting to build tension. Tenet is 2 1/2 hours long and is crazy boring, the actual time bending fun happens at 1 1/2 hours and by that point I was so stir crazy it was underwhelming. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tenet is a lesser epic but with far more potential than other bigger works.

The acting in Nolan films are not always the best, I don't know if it's the casting choices or the fact the storylines, cinematography leave the actors behind. It's not that he uses bad actors, it's just In my opinion you can never truly relate to the characters. However, Tenet fools you into thinking this is the case again, but then makes a splash with some top acting from John David Washington and Elizabeth Debicki.

Unlike many Nolan films(an example Dunkirk) the emotion is cold, almost unimportant but in Tenet you do start to root for any chance of romance and that becomes are driver throughout the film. Quite rare.

The film does genuinely feel less epic, most of the shots are in close quarters and if they're not, it's at sea or on a wasteland. You can see this similarly in inception, but that does manage to have large scape epic scenes mixed in.

You do start towards the end realise again, through subtle (at the time, pointless) shots that you are meant to be looking at this film in a certain way, but don't quite get in until it unravels and bang! it hits you... Damn, Nolan got me again.

Those moments are great in Nolan films when you collectively start nodding in the cinema when you all piece it together.

Overall a good Nolan film... Good clothing, cars and bling, not so much scenery and atmosphere.

Only real sticking point - the Score.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good twist on a cool espionage like movie. Not his best work mainly because it made no sense at all. The movie would like you to feel it has purpose yet it takes a very deterministic view of reality. Why invert after the missions complete? If you’re having a briefing an hour after the event and everyone isn’t dead then doesn’t that mean it succeeded? Therefore, why invert at all. If what’s going to happen happens then there’s no free will. I didn’t see the connection between Kat and the protagonist. I woulda just let her die tbh. The characters had no solid connections that made you root one way or another. Besides all the plot holes it was visually entertaining at times. However, the story will leave you wondering wtf was the point of the movie? Expand

TENET is Nolan's most confusing movie. Even more confusing than his INTERSTALLER. It is necessary to watch it twice, preferably with subtitles. The story (without time concept) was very simple but with time concept, the story was so much complex and interesting. This movie gives you enough for discussion and will enjoy discussing it.

Overall, do watch it (most preferably in cinemas) and discuss it with your friends (who have watched it).

Tenet is overrated. Even if it understood in its first watch, then also it is nowhere near to #Inception and Interstellar movies. The screenplay is confusing, unclear and boring in some parts. The screenplay is confusing, unclear and boring in some parts. The action scenes are good, especially plane crash & car chase scenes. The most pseudo intelluels who claim they understood the movie in first watch aren't true. After watching the movie, they read the movie explanation fully and then liked the movie. But if we are honest, then we knew that the movie is not much good while watching first time. My rating - 4/10 Expand
