Critic Reviews
Compared with the most recent Star Wars films, which prompted fierce debate, The Mandalorian and Grogu seems unlikely to truly offend anyone; it is neither a confusing mess nor so offbeat as to divide the fan base. Instead, it’s content to be a nothing burger, two dutiful hours of laser blasts and flat dialogue that will do just enough to keep toys stacked on shelves

The basic formula of a bounty hunter and his lovable, Force-wielding companion delivers the goods, even if the setpieces tend to bleed into each other after a while. What’s missing is variety and soul, replaced by the dusty returns of Favreau and Filoni still playing around in someone else’s sandbox

The Mandalorian and Grogu is a self-contained story that more than rises to the challenge of feeling like a capital M Movie (a commendable achievement for what could have just been a streaming special in another timeline) but fails to feel like a Star Wars Movie in anything but branding.

As a simple adventure story, The Mandalorian and Grogu is a lot of fun with Baby Yoda's sheer adorableness doing a lot of heavy lifting. Epic action and a pulsating score help bring this story to a cinematic level that feels a real step up from season 3. Yet, with surprisingly low stakes for a Star Wars movie, it all ends up feeling rather inconsequential.

It’s been nearly seven years since there was a new “Star Wars” movie released in theaters and there are lots of ways to do it. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, a disjointed off-ramp that lacks the scale and ambition of its sisters, fails the task. As the Mandalorians might say, this is not the way.

It opens no major storytelling doors in the Star Wars universe – and is unlikely to herald a new era of Star Wars in cinemas. Indeed, for fans of the series it could feel like several fresh episodes of the streaming show given a major boost of scale, imagination and budget. Still, as a standalone film, it’s perky and good-looking, with rousing set pieces.

The result is something that – for better and worse – presents Star Wars at its most light, pulpy and throwaway. It’s the sort of engaging action-adventure story that will play best with younger audiences and those in search of a small dose of escapism, while lacking the grandeur and scale of the very best Star Wars tales.

When Pascal and Baby Yoda have their quiet moments, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” is involving. Unfortunately, the Disney folks should have called this “One Battle After Another,” because that’s basically all we get. Some of the scenes look great in IMAX format, and there’s some great puppetry here.

Next Best PictureMay 19, 2026
What’s present here is one of the most visually horrid and banal “Star Wars” creations to date. Is the allure of getting children in a theater to see Grogu enough to keep this franchise afloat and, more importantly, on the big screen? Who’s to say, but if it’s any indication of what the next decade of storytelling for the “Star Wars” universe will be, then we’re in deep trouble.

My assessment is that this is a kid’s movie. If you think Grogu and the other tiny creatures are cute, you’re going to love and adore this movie. Pay special attention to the new breakout character, Trapper Wolf. But honestly, I wanted more, and Trapper Wolf is not enough. The stakes are not that high. The story continues the character development of both the Mandalorian and Grogu. If they failed their mission…whelp, off to another. This is essentially four episodes of the television series padded to feature length.

Inessential and inoffensive, frequently adorable and fun for the whole family, Jon Favreau’s film feels like three good-enough TV episodes smushed together. If that sounds pleasing to you as a movie-goer and a “Star Wars” fan, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” will satisfy. But if you’re hoping for something a bit more ambitious, the film’s generic soul will likely just keep chipping away at the franchise’s up-and-down goodwill.

This isn't a Skywalker Saga installment, nor does it pretend to be all that much bigger than the show it comes from. This is a film focused on Din Djarin and Grogu, and it delivers on that point. With those expectations set, The Mandalorian and Grogu is genuinely delightful to watch. It's funny, sweet, very emotional at times, and full of action and adventure.
