The Mandalorian and Grogu is a self-contained story that more than rises to the challenge of feeling like a capital M Movie (a commendable achievement for what could have just been a streaming special in another timeline) but fails to feel like a Star Wars Movie in anything but branding.

It opens no major storytelling doors in the Star Wars universe – and is unlikely to herald a new era of Star Wars in cinemas. Indeed, for fans of the series it could feel like several fresh episodes of the streaming show given a major boost of scale, imagination and budget. Still, as a standalone film, it’s perky and good-looking, with rousing set pieces.

This isn't a Skywalker Saga installment, nor does it pretend to be all that much bigger than the show it comes from. This is a film focused on Din Djarin and Grogu, and it delivers on that point. With those expectations set, The Mandalorian and Grogu is genuinely delightful to watch. It's funny, sweet, very emotional at times, and full of action and adventure.
