This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is Dark Empire, except done worse in every way you can think of. Palpatine's return felt forced and weirdly done. There are several twists and redemptions that make no sense whatsoever. The progression of the movie feels weird.
I'm certain a good number of actors in this film are great in other films. Its just in this film, they can't save it. The story makes no sense and this movie makes me long for the days when I thought attack of the clones was the worst star wars movie. And the icing on the cake is that the music is really forgettable.

Instead, I find it largely forgettable. It honestly felt like they had 7 hours worth of movie that they condensed down into 2. It also felt like the general idea was, "We aren't going to make people happy with this story anymore. Let's just put it to bed. Make a clean break. That way we can use this universe to tell something new rather than continually treading down this same old storyline." Now that they are no longer slaves to the old lore, I'm actually interested to see what they will come up with. Expand

Is has handfuls of amazing action sequences with a sprinkling of well done touching or comedic scenes. But it is marred by other cringe-inducing, nostalgia-soaked fan-service scenes that diminish the whole. In addition, huge gaps in consistency, as well as too many too-prefectly-timed coincidental events taking place one after another to move the plot forward and wrap up as many hanging threads from previous movies as possible made my eyes roll up in annoyance too many times. It is still entertaining as a whole, but this latest trilogy, like the original three, starts super strong, maintains a decent high in the middle, but falters a bit attempting to stick the final landing. But in general it's just a lot of wasted potential. Abrams could have done something with this story that utilized the existing plot and character, but instead he added a ton of new ones, spent most of the movie trying to "correct" fan outrage about things that happened in 'Last Jedi' and 'Solo Story'.

The last film in a nine film saga is completely episodic. What were they thinking? Still, production quality is still there and most of the actors do a good job. Anyone giving it a very low or high score isn't taking into account the inherit quality of it or the god awful writing decisions.

This movie fortunately avoids any annoying characters, but is really missing a great big bad. I love the redemption arc however, and feel that this could have been so much better if there was more time to understand what exactly is going on with the plot. I do like the theme of love, as I feel that's been lost on many reviews. Just don't expect anything groundbreaking ; it's a fun movie. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rise of the Skywalker consists of a sequence of set-piece scenes, some unnecessary, tied together by a spurious and poor story that is about finding a map to the evil emperor to kill him before he unleashes his fleet of planet killers. These scenes are strung together by (a lot of) exposition, sudden reveals (some that make no sense), odd plot twists(deus ex machina), coincidences and anything else that you can think off.

Just to give you a few examples of how badly things are done. Deus ex machina was originally a stage play device in which a god literally appeared out of nowhere to solve an issue or end a story. An adapted example is the fate of the Black Beast of Aaaaaargghh in the Holy Grail: the animator of the monster dies of an heart attack and thus it is no more. The problem with this story device is that it is a bad thing unless it is handled properly. In the example it is used for fun and it works. In ROS it is meant to end the story by having Rey defeat the emperor and it doesn't work because having to win by being granted godlike powers out of nowhere without a proper setup is just bad writing. Had the story worked towards this moment, in that Rey shows the ability to channel the force, then it might have worked.

Another bad scene is that moment where Rey jumps over a tie-fighter in the desert. So, why was Rey even there? The group is there to get a dagger that helps them to find the emperor. They have that dagger so they are just about to take off with the spaceship they have just found. But then Rey decides to walk into the desert saying that she needs to do something. It makes no sense for her to do this and it even endangers the mission as they loose the weapon and get Chewy captured. Making people do things that are explained with I need to do something is just bad writing.

At a certain moment the group goes to a planet where a former friend of Poe lives. She instantly finds him and in a few moments turns from hostile(wanting to kill him) to self-serving(shooting him for the bounty) to self-sacrificing(she gives him a device that gets them of the planet that she meant to use for herself). A few set pieces later the planet she lives on gets blown to smithereens. And some set pieces later we are shown that she survived without any explanation given. Ships that have been abandoned for a lengthy time work perfectly without much ado. In the case of the x-wing that gets lifted out of the water: you can actually see the seaweed hanging from the hull. Just to get to the next scene they ignore that ships exposed to the elements or scavengers will stop working. The list goes on and on and I have to stop out of sheer lack of space, but maybe the best example of how poor the story is, shown for the main story. In this movie the evil emperor is found to be alive. He has managed to create a fleet of star destroyers equipped with planet killer weapons. This is just told to us as there is no trace of this in the previous movies. Next he tells Kylo Ren to submit to him and kill Rey. Then he will unleash his fleet to subdue the galaxy. It is never explained why the emperor waits, where he got those ships from or the crew that fly them. -The good side finds this out and decides to stage a preemptive attack. But to do so they need to find the planet. So the first string of set piece actions is about finding a map finder, of which only two exists, that will lead them to the planet. This search then devolves into a series of fetch quests that lead to more MacGuffins. Thus the emperor gets introduced in an attempt to redo the plot of the first movies by casting him in the role of the emperor, Kylo in the role of Darth Vader and Rey in the role of Luke Skywalker. To hasten the conflict between Kylo and Rey they have a force link fight which is actually a struggle between the dark and the light side of the force. But also, in a more profound way, about being able to create your own destiny, which is the message of the movie. Granted this is the best part of the movie, but it is poorly executed and drowned by all the superfluous fluff. The end makes a mockery of everything as the emperor doesn't get defeated by either of them or them together but by Rey being granted godlike powers out of nowhere. The only thing that gets redeemed from the main story is actually Kylo Ren.

I understand that Abrams was facing a herculean task, but instead of doubling down, cut out the fluff and work with what there is he bloats the story with an emperor, another evil army, new characters and fan pandering. The result is a poorly written extended trailer.

The movie is just an incoherent mess of ideas, tropes and plots. Lacks any kind of nuance or sense, made purely for the "eye candy" effects and couple of sad/bittersweet moments. Yes Luke, Anakin, Yoda and many other characters were powerful but they also had flaws, personalities, they were able to make mistakes, lose, meanwhile Rey is an epitome of Mary Sue - infallible, incorruptible, all-powerful and completely unbelievable character. Rest of the cast is just "there" to literally hang around as replaceable support characters. Yes you could argue that everything in the movie can be explained by expanded universe, it even ties to Mandalorian, references books, games, comics but that doesn't make it any better - just more convoluted. At the same time the basics didn't change at all - it is still a simple "good vs evil" fairy tale in space which would've been fine if they weren't such cowards and took more risks with characters, made a coherent story spanning 3 movies and balanced pandering to fans with respect for the material. Disappointing. Expand

That's unfortunate, given that viewers really deserved something spectacular to wrap up the long-running saga (that's if you believe this really is the end, which is highly unlikely given what a cash cow this has been for the filmmakers and distributors). But, considering the prominence accorded to lesser characters, the walk-on roles assigned to the franchise's most charismatic figures and a narrative full of plot holes, the picture serves up a combination of elements that just doesn't work as well as it could or should have. Time for a rest for the "Star Wars" saga so it can retool and come up with fresh, new and more viable material. Expand

I don't hold Disney responsible. Its the writers and director.
I'm genuinely saddened by how this turned out, it could have been amazing. Why not let Rey take the throne and throw the galaxy into chaos, why make the "Big Bad" the same guy from the parts I through VI? Its just lazy, its safe and its lazy.
I'm glad I finally got around to watching it but it was a massive let down in every way you can possibly imagine.

Abrams had the hard job to make something out of Rian Johnsons serious and numerous mistakes while also dealing with heavy studio interferences. The interferences alone made J. J. Abrams nearly quit according to rumours and he even said publicly that all The Rise of Skywalker critics were right. If I got it right they promised him that he could do what he wanted without interference and then fight him on all fronts. To be honest this makes it hard to rate. On one hand he delivered something truly great if you count in the circumstances and on the other hand the movie is still garbage but nearly nothing is his fault. The trilogy had no real story arc from beginning to end. It became a rag rug and ended as rag rug. He had to undo much of Rian Johnsons massacre of Star Wars in the beginning and give a satisfying conclusion. The first takes time away from the latter. But lets go to the movie. The story is weak with many plot holes and the return of a character who should not return because there is nothing in the prequel movies that points in this direction. There is nothing new for the characters. Rey still got demoted to Mary Sue, Finn and Poe are uninteresting and there are a lot of stupid decisions. I noticed that this does not help me or you. I don't know what to recommend. I would not watch this movie as fan but must admid that they tried their best. There is a lot better material out there. I recommend the Thrawn trilogy in books (Both the old and new) by Timothy Zahn. It would been the better trilogy if done without interference. Think about what Joss Whedon, the Russo brothers or Patty Jenkins could do with the material. Overall I will give credits to J. J. Abrams and a salute of respect for this but canot rate this higher than 4/10.. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately it feels like the screenplay was a product of a brainstorm - a bunch of independent ideas were generated, and only then someone was trying to tie them together - with mixed results though. Star Wars universe was never paying much attention to reality and physics, it didn't really bother me, as it was mostly consistent. This time you need add a complete disregard to logic as well, and this is a step too far for me :-(. Expand

I liked the visuals, special effects, characters, dialogue (for a Star Wars film), and the emotions effectively evoked. There were more supernatural scenes, rather than feeling too sci-fi only. The villain felt like a real villain unlike Snoke and Kylo Ren (in the first film). They toned down the obvious US identity politics references found in the last 2 films, especially the first (where they made the Final Order affiliated people all pale looking white dudes, in this film there are more PoC and women, which is actually more realistic IRL). However, as often mentioned in the critical reviews, too many things that happen seem completely unrealistic even in the SW universe and not in line with the rules established in the original 6 films. It's like they didn't even try. The amount of assumed deaths and resurrections that happened was ridiculous. Having to save the universe in like a day with all these variables at play AND the Final Order being absurdly advantaged in terms of strength, like hundreds of star / planet destroyer ships, sure. At times it looks like the final battle is happening in space and other times closer to the surface of the planet, if the former, the hero characters on the exterior of the FO ships would have died as they had no space protective equipment on. More time should have been given to Kylo Ren after he turned. Expand

Like even the ending was just meh, it was hard to care about a lot of what the movies brings that is because the Last Jedi messed everything up a lot but it's also because JJ Abrams just does a meh job. I wish they stuck with Colin Trevorrow as I think he would've done a better job than JJ Abrams. But all around this movie gets a meh which is a 4 it would've gotten a 5 but it's so mediocre that it earns a 4. As I said there's nothing that blew me away and there's nothing that really made me pissed off it was just a whole lot of mediocrity.

What probably frustrates me the most is that Disney has been able to create good Star Wars content, the Solo movie I thought was a good film, Rogue One which was also a good film, the Mandalorian has been said to be pretty good even though I haven't watched it personally and even Star Wars Rebels was decent.

Edit: Just finished the Mandolorian and I thought it was really good, It doesn't feel like Star Wars exactly though but I think that's a good thing it's more refreshing and feels like something new and cool. So Disney is really good at making spinoff movies and series but just not able to make very good main saga movies...

Unfortunately, this movie was an unworthy final for the star wars saga. Too many wrong decisions and plot holes. Furthermore, it tries to undo the 8th movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie and this trilogy as a whole is a huge mess.

It should be called "The Rise of Palpatine" because at the end Palpatine won - he killed of Skywalkers and stolen there name.

But strangely enough I kind of enjoyed watching this movie so I give it a passing grade.

Plot 5

After 42 years of Star Wars becoming a pop culture phenomenon in movie history, the Skywalker Saga is finally coming to an end with the final instalment of the sequel trilogy.

One year after the events of The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren (Driver) obtains a Sith wayfinder to trace the mysterious galaxy-wide broadcast by Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious (McDiarmid), who was thought to be dead at the end of the Galatic Civil War many years ago. Tracing the source, Kylo travel to the Exegol and finds the Sith Lord on lifes support. He then proceed to reveal everything about what he has been up to and vital information on Rey (Ridley).

While Rey continues her Jedi training under General Leia Organa, the Resistance learn about the same broadcast from a spy within the First Order. Using Luke Skywalker's notebook which have information on a Sith wayfinder, she join Chewbacca, Poe Dameron, Finn, BB-8 and C-3PO on a mission to locate a Sith wayfinder on Pasaana, which is suspected to be it's last location. As for Rey, she will face Kylo Ren once again and learning more truths about her past.

Unlike The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, I have a mixed feeling on The Rise of Skywalker. The good parts are there are many nostalgia and call-backs to previous Star Wars movies. The performances from the casts are simply amazing. Nothing too weird and bland. To me, Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley are best part of the casts' performances. Both of them are great since the first instalment. John Boyega and Oscar Isaac did a great job too.

Unfortunately, those are the only good parts. There are more bad parts in this movie. Firstly, some of the characters introduced in the previous instalment are totally underused in this movie. Specifically, Domnhall Gleeson and Kelly Marie Tran whom they played General Hux and Rose Tico respectively, are not only underused but also barely in the movie and underdeveloped.

Next, the plot of the movie is sort of a rehash of Return of the Jedi. There many moments that are way too similar to that movie and make this movie lacked originality. J.J. Abrams made a mistake by doing the same method like he did with The Force Awakens, which a rehash of A New Hope. In addition, he placed too much on nostalgia and call-backs just to make the movie better and it failed. The movie also failed solve some of the previous unanswered questions that have been set up in the previous instalments.

The choice of using Darth Sidious as main antagonist is totally a waste if you asked me. Since Snoke was killed by Kylo Ren back in The Last Jedi, he should have been the main antagonist for the trilogy instead of Darth Sidious. This is definitely a wasted opportunity which could have make the movie and the sequel trilogy better.

Last but not least, the ending will be a minor controversial and some of you may or may not like it. While the movie is a mixed bag, it is still a good reason enough to go watch the movie at least to finally close the chapter of the Skywalker Saga.

JustAll fans wanted was a good Star Wars movie with better story, better characters, and more world-building...and those ideas are gone, completely ignored. If you like The Rise of Skywalker or the sequel trilogy aa a while, good for you. Just don't go bashing the Star Wars fans that hate this trilogy because all you care about is action, not story.

The Rise of Skywalker is a mess and the sequel trilogy as a whole. There was an idea that got retcon that turned everything to BS. A lot of plotholes that were never explained, Rey being a Mary Sue, disrespecting the original cast, ruining the last 6 movies, pulling Palpatine as the main villain AGAIN out of their ass in the new movies...WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THIS TRILOGY, SERIOUSLY? MONEY? They gave us something that's pointless for money. I'll say this, if it weren't for this trilogy, the prequels would still be hated. Yeah, they're still bad but as story goes it has good ideas and know what's going for...it just didn't have good execution.

This trilogy is always fighting with each other, if JJ was the writer for the other 2 movies, maybe they'll be a little better. To the sequel fans, you don't care about the story. You care about action, lightsabers, visual effects, explosions...good for you. Don't go telling people who used to be Star Wars fans "you are haters" "it's better than the previous trilogies" "go in open-minded and maybe you'll like the film." No, just no. You guys already have your Disney crap, all we wanted was Star Wars to be good again with something new and simple but effective and character development and not hard cash grab with so many nostalgia factor and changing some rules of this franchise and moments that don't feel earned the Disney Star Wars.

New information is thrown at you with no repose, character arcs are either self-contradictory, or completely non-existent, and it's score, while amazing, has some questionable placement throughout the run-time of the movie. Even it's message isn't well-executed. For a movie trying to be about not letting your background or history define you, all I have learned is that in the Star Wars universe, you don't matter unless you're either a Skywalker or Palpatine, and that your roots are all-consuming. This film serves as a lesson as to what happens when you create a trilogy without a plan, and obsess over trying to address criticisms of its predecessor. Expand

The Original Trilogy is almost perfect and the Prequels are hilariously bad but the Sequel Trilogy has been pretty mediocre so far. So how does this final film wrap up the ENTIRE Skywalker Saga? Meh, very messy and mostly disappointing. If you like fan service or huge battles then you will probably love this but I was looking for a good story with good characters and the film mostly doesn’t deliver on that level. The only new character I liked that has been consistently good throughout the entire trilogy is Kylo Ren. He is the only new character to go through an actual arc throughout the trilogy about who he is while the others haven’t really gone through one. Finn had one in the first film but that was completely abandoned by this film. Rey and Poe haven’t gone through any arc but I like Poe as a character more than Rey. The Original Trilogy characters are fine. They already completed their arcs and are here to help these new characters but I have a problem with one of them, Palpatine. Although I enjoyed his presence and Ian McDiarmid did a great job as usual, he really doesn’t serve any purpose to the story other than to be there. It feels like a last minute decision to throw him into the film and I felt that this wasn’t their original goal. Leia’s presence was awkward in a few places but I can’t fault the film for that because they did the best they could out of a bad situation. The new characters for this film only weren’t that good either. They were introduced, used for the characters to get out of a situation or get into something and then were abandoned until the end. They really weren’t fleshed out a lot and felt useless. The first hour of the film was incredibly clumsy, messy, and at some points confusing. The film slowly got better as time went along but it didn’t get that much better. The first hour is our group of heros hopping from planet to planet and delivering exposition. That’s it. The editing was really choppy and quick along with the transitions. Some scenes would switch to another character for a minute or less and then hop back to our core three characters. It felt awkward and very rushed which completely destroyed the pacing for the rest of the film because the rest of the film has much slower pacing. The film tries to fit a LOT of information into its 2 and a half hour runtime where it feels like the film should have been 3 and a half or 4 hours to fit all this information. The film introduced a new force power that was stupid to me. It felt like the writers wrote themselves into a corner and used this new force ability as a way to get out. The final climactic battle was kinda cool but it wasn’t that impressive to me. In fact, most of the action wasn’t that special compared to some of the other action scenes in the other films. The battle between Rey and Kylo over the ocean was kinda cool but most of the other action scenes felt uninspired. The acting for the most part was pretty great. Adam Driver did a great job and so did the Original Trilogy characters. Although I wasn’t a big fan of their characters, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Issac did a pretty good job. As always, the music by John Williams is fantastic. This man can never screw up Star Wars music. The visuals are pretty great also. The planets looked great and so did the ships and action sequences. Some of the alien creatures were practical which I felt was a really nice touch. I really enjoyed and appreciated some of the fan service moments. I won’t spoil any of them for you but I had a smile on my face when those moments happened. Overall, The Rise of Skywalker is a disappointing ending to the Skywalker Saga with choppy editing, transitions, uninspired action, and rushed story but retains its good acting, visuals, and music with some good fan service moments to leave viewers happy. 6. It was mindless fun-boring that kind of just left me feeling...yay-meh. The biggest emotional beats came from droids and Chewy (which makes sense since he's the only one who'd been with Leia since 1977, but the rest of the character reactions seemed to mimic real life scrolling through a Facebook feed: "On no! She died? That's so sad. But, OMG, look at this hilarious cat video tho!"). The characters are all underwritten, probably because the story literally leaves zero time for any kind of character development. (Things are mentioned, people say "I NEED TO TELL YOU SOMETHING BEFORE WE DIE!" and then they never tell that person what they NEEDED to tell them even though they are prompted to do so by another character.) Everyone's way too busy racing around from Planet A to Planet Z, yelling about needing this doohickey and that thingamabob to stop the First Order (again, always) with no time whatsoever for any kind of meaningful interaction. (Except you, 3PO. Thank you for that mournful lump in my throat that lasted a good 10 minutes as I realized I was watching my childhood come to an end after 42 years.) So, while there was some joy to be had (there are some seriously fun set pieces), and some of the visuals are insanely gorgeous, there was also some....boredom, actually. Which seems strange to write as I've just explained that the film moves at a breakneck (light)speed. How can a film be nonstop adventure, and still leave you kind of mentally checking out during it? At the end of the day, I'm not entirely sure what all the insane whinging is about. It's a Star Wars movie. There was Star Warsing. Lots and lots of it. I mean, have you people tried watching the Prequels again? It's damn near...impossible. This new film, and this entire trilogy as a whole, is infinitely more enjoyable than those god-awful, near-unendurable prequel CGI snoozefests. I'll take underwritten but enjoyable-enough characters in a film over universally terrible acting any day of the week. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An unsatisfying ending to the upsettingly bad sequel movies. It's difficult to find a trilogy where each individual movie is this loosely connected to the others. The highest praise I can give to The Rise of Skywalker is that it's at least marginally better than The Last Jedi.

Most plot points feel shoehorned into the story. Chewie doesn't have much to do with anything, he's just kind of there until the end where they make a bizarre callback to a joke about him not getting a medal for blowing up the original Deathstar 50 years ago. Even after three movies Rey still manages to feel completely disconnected from all the other main characters. She barely ever interacts with anyone other than Kylo Ren and when she does she just turns around and leaves. How are these people friends? The chemistry between Rose and Finn was so terrible they decided to abandon the whole thing - thank god. They also opted out of recreating the late Carrie Fisher digitally and instead have her appear (mostly) as herself in these abominations where you can easily tell she's acting out a very different script that is cut together with new scenes to kind of fit the narrative. You get that same feeling you do from the Star Wars with Tommy Wiseau clips, except it's not funny.

Out of all the character arcs, the only one that kind of succeeds is that of Ben Solo / Kylo Ren. It's a shame they just didn't really write anything for him, either. He just arrives out of nowhere when he's needed for a scene. They even have him physically interact with objects and Rey when they're doing that weird force projection chat thing from The Last Jedi again - multiple times. Which brings me to the next section I'm going to condense into a single sentence: that's not how the force works!

I would call this movie bad fan fiction, but at least fans usually respect the limitations of the universe they're working with. Star Wars died with the prequels in 2005. It's a great shame Disney is parading its rotting corpse in theaters for money.

The character Rey had first conquered me for his personality. In 2017 came Star Wars: The Last Jedi which divided the public and the critics. I had loved the ideas that the second movie brought me about the strength and deepening of the character Luke Skywalker. It made me vibrate in certain scenes and thrill in others. This ninth and final chapter brought the image of an unnecessary apology. They were so concerned about redeeming themselves with the public and the critics that they decided to throw away the topics presented in the second film and explain them again in a very simple and unstructured way. I didn't feel the emotion I think I should have felt. I couldn't feel like things the movie wanted me to feel. The epic feeling of an ending. It is sad to know that they decided to go back on some ideas instead of moving on and knowing how to develop them. I found this last chapter quite average and anticlimatic. Disappointing. Expand

It lacks continuity with the other two films and every other Star Wars film at that. If you’re a a casual Star Wars fan who just wants to see action with no explanation needed, this is for you. But if you’re a hardcore fan and want cohesion in your stories, you’re going to hate it. The Last Jedi ruined the chance to create a compelling movie after that and JJ Abrams did his best to try to answer all the questions he set up in The Force Awakens. I blame Disney for not sticking with the same director. It seems like Rian Johnson was having a ego contest and was trying to subvert expectations by trying to outdo Abrams rather than adding on to what he was trying to create, which kind of ruined the story of this trilogy. I love Star Wars, but I’m at the point where I’ve kind of out grown it and have to understand it’s for kids. Kids aren’t going to question the lore of any story. Most kids are going to accept it how it is. They’ll just like it because it’s a cool world and people are fighting. But Disney took the nerdy part of Star Wars out and made it into a bad Marvel film. So I’m not interested in any Star Wars trilogy anymore, because I would have to dumb myself down to watch these movies and accept them for how they are instead of being intrigued like I was with their other six films that had continuity. But it was ok, I wouldn’t watch it again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie itself, I would say, could be best described as an extremely simple film. When you boil it down, the story is simple: find a Sith Wayfinder to get to the Emperor, who wants to destroy the galaxy. I was looking for more, but I could roll with that concept. But what brings the movie down is the intense amount of boring extra quests they have to do to get to the Sith Wayfinder. They have to get a knife, and then someone to read the inscriptions on the knife, then they have to cross the water. The whole movie seems to avoid interacting with the Emperor as a threat, to focus on all of our new characters, and the Emperor ends up just feeling like a goal to get to, rather, than a person who actually impacted any of the heroes journey to get to him, and hurt anybody. There are several things I could say that are more specific flaws I had with it, but I won't elaborate.

The action is good in parts, the first half of the Kylo Ren x Rey fight is well choreographed and fast enough to keep my whittling attention span satisfied, and I enjoy the aesthetics of Exogol, with the lighting, however I do with that there was more action in this area. I can't really count the final battle with Palpatine as action, which could have been interesting, being more of a battle of perseverance than of power, but it was bogged down by it being intensely slow and drawing our attention away from it to focus on an epic space battle. Overall,
Visuals: Great
Story: Bad
Character: Depends, either boring, good, or ruined by a bad script.
Ending: Garbage
Final Score: You can see it now, but yeah, a 5/10.

There were too many distractions in the film that took the viewer out of the movie rather than pulling them into the movie. How is that Leia? Are they using CGI or archival footage or a combination? Wait, is that Charlie from Lost? Is he still running around a tropical jungle? I wonder if they filmed that scene in the same location as Lost? I bet this guy is Lando.. Wow that was a fast scene! It's almost like they're stuffing the film with every previous character (alive and dead) but they only appear on-screen long enough to say "Remember me!?" and disappear. What's the point? And this failure makes it much easier to notice the film's other shortcomings.

There is a lack of engagement. It's hard to care for these pencil-thin characters. There is no suspense. You just find yourself just waiting for it to end. Not to mention massive gaps in logic, and characters making decisions solely to serve the mechanics of what happens next.. but it's not what the character would actually do. The viewer walks away not believing in it. It didn't happen. It didn't end that way. Very reminiscent of Lost in this regard. Maybe the appearance of Charlie was foreshadowing after all.

I know none of these negative reviews are going to keep Star Wars fans from seeing this movie. But when you finally do watch it, just know that you are not alone, that you are not crazy, and that J.J. Abrams has screwed us once again.

Almost nothing in this movie was good, the script is a catastrophe, the movie is fast-paced, there is a huge lack of originality, and the main one that for me was the worst of all, the lack of respect for Rian Johnson. The only good things about this movie are the performances that fight to save the movie and the soundtrack that remains impactful. Expand

Watching the Disney trilogy feels like witnessing a school project, one kid named JJ felt passionate and studied but the kid paired up with him Rian seemed to not care about the project and wanted to make it all about his vision with little knowledge, then JJ had to fix what he could last minute before turning in the paper and rushed it. They should've given this movie another year to make sense, given George Lucas overall say. They shold've planned out the trilogy before even starting it and sticking wit in one director. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wile this movie has some fun moments the plot really doesn't hold up. First off the reintroduction of Palpatine isn't given enough context and the decisions the character makes don't make any sense given what we learn about him in the prequel trilogy. He is far too calculating to rest his whole plan on Rey. The character of Rose Tico is totally written out of the story. I personally really liked her character and wanted to see her relationship with Finn explored more. Given the sad treatment the actress Kelly Marie Tran received after The Last Jedi this seems like kind of a sleight to her. She deserved a proper sendoff in this film and didn't get it.

Finally, this film in a lot of ways seems to ignore what happened in the prior film. I know that The Last Jedi was controversial among some of the fans, but ignoring its central insights makes the whole sequel trilogy seem disjointed and makes the trilogy make less sense rather than more.

Mediocre sci-fi movie, even worse for the Star Wars franchise.

Characters seemed almost completely different from previous entries with only Kylo Ren having a somewhat coherent story arc.

Storyline made very little sense with a lot of plot holes and very little explanation of major plot points and twists.

Visuals and Sound were about the only great aspect of the movie, aside from some awkward CGI renderings of younger characters.

Overall, I'm not going to see it again till it has been available for rent. I'm glad I paid the lower matinee ticket prices to see this sad excuse of an entry in the once beloved Star Wars franchise.

Side note: I am glad they toned down the corny jokes and gags, it reminded me of the issues a lot of fans had with The Phantom Menace.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into the theater with not very high expectations since I heard about how this film was bringing back Palpatine, main villain of the prequel and original trilogies and having him be the one who was secretly pulling the strings. Obviously not original! But it turned out to better than I expected. It moved at a much more rapid pace than TLJ so I didn't feel like it was stretched out. It also gave a more convincing albeit unsettling answer to the question about the protagonist Rey's family heritage rather than just sticking with the "it is nothing important" line. The action sequences were great and the long presumed dead Emperor was successfully portrayed as a terrifying and diabolical figure who was willing to anything to continue the Sith line. But after seeing the extent of his powers, the way Palpatine died seemed underwhelming. The kiss between Rey and the now-redeemed Kylo Ren seemed forced into the story and the ending scene where Rey adopts the Skywalker name while wielding a yellow lightsaber was a head scratcher. In the end, I can just say the film was alright because though it wasn't a complete mess, it felt like there was something missing. Expand

You don’t have the gaping plot holes or downright idiocy we witnessed in The Last Jedi, and there are no random casino scenes or important characters getting killed like they’re just Star Trek red shirts, but this movie really suffers from trying to do too much at once. It’s like they were trying to play damage control after the mess Rían Johnson left behind, offer the obligatory fan service, and still write a compelling story. Unfortunately, that means the movie is really disjointed, frantic, and somewhat difficult to follow. There are a lot of “well, that was convenient” moments or scenes where you’re left scratching your head and saying, “How did they know to do that?”
It wasn’t all bad. The effects are good, the actors manage to look like they’re holding it together (which is more than can be said for the prequel trilogy), and they really do wrap up the story in a semi-satisfactory way. In particular, the last few minutes of the movie are probably the finest moments of the film, but the two hours leading up to it often feel more like Michael Bay tried to make a movie about a Picasso painting of Star Wars: you recognize what you’re seeing, but nothing is quite where you think it belongs, there’s an awful lot going on, and everything must inevitably explode.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technically it's not as bad as rogue one or last jedi etc. It is politicized but what's funny that's not what makes it bad. What makes it bad is just that it's a bad movie where main character is flawless to the bone and nothing can ever stop her. Everyone else have absolutely nothing to offer and there are no shades of Grey. You can just support the only possible choice or die.

. And you see i even know why it's like that. Reason is because it is atargetted as a movie with a clear message for the kids. There can't be any unambiguous messages for children viewers to challenge the status quo.

May neocommunism and world peace come. The action on the spot in some places ran a goosebump on what’s on the screen. Almost like in the good old days. The episode is far from a failure, as many toxic users think. Daisy Ridley in the role of Rey, who in the beginning builds herself up as an unworthy really great Jedi. A steeper villain than Adam Driver aka Kylo Ren must still be sought. Each actor gave his best to my personal opinion. The rebels and the Imperials smash each other for too long. Where the original trilogy felt like the singular creative vision of one man assisted by many and prone to happy accidents, this trilogy feels like a fads love letter that devolves into just the worst kind of Twitter argument. And THAT leads to one of the only things I think both fans and haters of TLJ can agree on - - that what this trilogy lacked more than anything else was a strong creative direction. In terms of story, character, and tone, it just seems that the this trilogy a missing a certain Feigi-ness. What JJ did in this movie is essentially ignore 90% of what was set up in TLJ and spend the first half of this movie setting up the movie he wanted to make, throwing in occasional, more obvious jabs at TLJ throughout seemingly to appease and service all the fans that felt so wronged by it. I think some people that hated TLJ will love this film for doing that but to me it just comes off as inconsistent storytelling. Now to focus in on specifically this movie...

I think, with the first half of this movie, JJ and the other co-writers in this film fell into an issue that many video game quest lines suffer from: McGuffin Russian Doll. Meaning that throughout the movie the characters were tracking down an object that led to another object, that led to a new character, etc. From my perspective, it amounts to making excuses to take your characters to new location after new location. And it is that faux pas in storytelling device selection that I think accelerated the pacing to a point of ridiculousness. Moments that should have hit like a train were give no time to breath. Character motivations, trials, and tribulations were skipped through like Netflix's 1.5x viewing speed feature was turned on. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of moments I enjoyed in that first half, but truly, almost everything just felt rushed for that whole first half of the film. I do think the second half caught itself a bit, but without the fleshed out setup that was required of the first half, everything I liked about the second half was somewhat dulled. Without the context of the trilogy, I actually lean ever so slightly towards liking this film. But with that context (which cant be ignored) I'm much more on the fence about it. I enjoyed the ride while I was on it, but after taking some time to think about how this final piece fits into the puzzle that is the Skywalker saga, I'm a bit disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Star Wars: Episode IX is the first movie I learnt of with my senses and knowledge of Star Wars intact. Just before this movie was coming I watched all the previous movies so that I could catch up before this movie came. I wasn't born until The Phantom Menace, I didn't know anything about the other movies since I used to think Star Wars is only a cartoon, then when The Force Awakens came I had my board exams going on. And The Last Jedi was getting so much hate I thought Star Wars is just another franchise being done to death like Jurassic Park or The Matrix. So overall saying, this is the first Star Wars movie that I knew how to react on when it released. And that was definitely not a good reaction.
So first of all my problem is with how "convenient" the plot twists are. How on earth are the plot twists done so badly that there doesn't seem to be anything at stake! Rey and friends are getting sucked in sand, the animal inside is friendly. C3PO's memory gets formatted, R2D2 restores it. They don't know where to go, Rey just holds her knife and COMPARES IT WITH THE SURROUNDINGS AND FINDS HER WAY!?! And no, I'm not even getting to the dozen things that happened when she had to defeat Palpatine. Nothing matters in this movie for that matter. What happened to Rey becoming evil? What happened to the rebels on the planet where C3PO's memory was formatted? They were never brought up again.
The movie completely massacred everything that Star Wars stands for. I think the problem with all the sequel movies is that they are pandering to a much, much younger generation. Anything that could have been a little too mature was probably thrown out of the window by Mickey Mouse, because then how will the little girls from Middle East have Rey dolls if she did something mature like Luke and Anakin? Palpatine came back to life only so that Rey could smash him again and show how strong and smart she is. Ben Solo died only because he was trying to save Rey for some reason, even though he has Jedi powers so he could have just moved her out of the path. No culture, lifestyle, important character, backstory - nothing happened in here. It was just picking up on the disaster that Episode VIII was.
And the worst part in the entire movie was when Rey took, or rather should I say, STOLE the Skywalker surname. What even was that scene? The way Luke and Leia were standing in the sky, they looked like her parents. The second worst for me would be the Rey and Ben kissing scene. I don't know how to say this, but Rey has a very sister-like look to her. Why would Ben ever do that? But of course, not everything is bad about Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Palpatine. Like I said before, it has a really awesome CGI, probably the best in the entire Star Wars franchise. The cinematography was also very good. The background score added to the intensity.
And the best part - it's the last movie of the sequel trilogy. Finally this thing ended. We don't have to watch any more of Rey Palpatine anymore. I'm glad I've watched every single Star Wars movie now, so I have been able to catch up with the trend and now I can talk to anyone about Star Wars whenever the topic comes up.

You have 40 years of cinematic history with complicated arcs and deep themes based on the world mythology, and a multibillion-dollar company with enough resources to hire the best screenwriters in the industry, and they ended up with a story where a bunch of undeveloped characters chase a thing to find another thing that will give them access to a bad guy who came from nowhere to kill him with a lightsaber. And the editing... I watched this movie in a theater, and it gave me a real headache. The camera never stops floating around, the characters talk fast and constantly scream, scenes replace each other so rapidly that you do not have time to realize what happened in the previous one, as in the next they already managed to introduce and withdraw a new character. In general, this film feels like a trailer of a few seasons of a TV show, and this is not an exaggeration. I don't know what went wrong with the production, especially after the JJ's Force Awakens which I liked (not loved but liked), but this new trilogy was a huge waste of a potential. And it's just sad. Abrams returned to Episode IX, who was already in charge of Episode VII, which he succeeded in because he went to safety. This is no longer the case with Episode IX, and unfortunately he didn't quite succeed here. Overall, the story is a bit like Episode VI, but that's not quite a problem. I don't want to spoiler, but the main problem here is mainly how bad some scenes are. The characters are already dead all of a sudden, and overall it doesn't work and it's not exactly the best story. The effects are excellent, as always with Star Wars movies and music as well, and in the end it's a good movie, but it doesn't end the saga very well. After the amazing Episode VII, which copied Episode IV, and the excellent Episode VIII, which came up with something completely new, here we have Episode IX, which throws dirt on the Star Wars trilogy and destroyed everything it built over the years. Unfortunately, I still have to hold the opinion that Episode VII should never have occurred. Expand
